Personally, I’d give the edge to Pearl Jam. They just keep producing albums and never seem to sell out. Nirvana, on the other hand, is overrated. Granted they pretty much helped kick open the doors publicly to grunge, their music isn’t as good as PJ’s. The overall consensus leans towards Nirvana however. I guess another poll for another time would be “Would Nirvana be considered the Top Grunge Band if Kurt Cobain Never blew his brains out??????” Think about it. Anyways, it would have been nice to see a dangerous performance lastnight at the American Music Awards, but I was let down again of yet another year of lackluster hip-hop lip sync acts. I’m wearing my worn down flannel shirt right now…peace out….

The beginning sounds a little like a Sheryl Crow song, but then Eddie Vedder starts singing and you know it’s definitely not Sheryl Crow. This song, from Vs., is more mainstream-radio friendly than any of the big hits from Ten – and that’s probably why I remember it better than the also-excellent “Jeremy” or “Even Flow.”

Drinking wine all night while busting out 30+ song setlists almost in every concert is something that Eddie Vedder has been doing for nearly 2 decades. Arguably the best frontman and vocalist of our era, one has to forgive him when he practically reuses the same guitar progression from both “Just Breathe” off of the Pearl Jam’s new album ‘Backspacer’ and then forhis solo album for ‘Into the Wild’ with the song “Tuolomne”. Nonetheless, both amazing songs, but I’d give the edge to “Just Breathe”

Lower Mainland / Fraser Valley Rivers Vedder Chilliwack… Fishing in the V/C is as good as we

Lower Mainland / Fraser Valley Rivers

Vedder Chilliwack… Fishing in the V/C is as good as we’ve seen in nearly a decade. The recent rains have changed things a bit but that shouldn’t keep anyone away. The big springs, coho and chum are running very strong on all areas of the river system. Anglers are experiencing unbelieveable days with some beautiful chome hatchery coho being landed. Gear anglers using roe, wool and spinners are doing very well. For swinging flies we suggest muddlers, egg sucking leeches, and christmas trees (green or blue) for coho, and purple patters for the chum. We’ve really loaded up on salmon flies so be sure to drop in on your way.

Norrish (Suicied) Creek… Fishing exceptionally well for coho. Chums are c&r only.

Stave… The Stave is certainly not disappointing. Coho and chum are coming up in fantastic numbers. Their are opportunities for both gear and fly anglers alike.

Harrison… Superb!!! Salmon runs are phenominal and cutthroat on the fly has seen 21+ inchers in recent days. Our RFT Fish Outs will be focusing the next few weeks on this system. Come join us!

Fraser… The main stem of the Fraser has been providing outstanding salmon and sturgeon opportunities. Usually the fortgotten sister when things heat up on the tributaries, the Fraser should not be discounted by any means. Pegleg is poor right now while most of the other bars are fishing very very well.

Little Campbell… Fishing very well for coho and springs.

Skagit… An amazing year for the Skagit. Lots of big bullies were brought in for photo opportunities. This is still an option for fly fisherman looking to get one last fix before the system closes midnight October 31st. The bullies are fond of big food items so large leeches, wooly buggers and rolled muddlers are good options. Bows will still take dries, emergers and a swung caddis.

Lower Mainland / Fraser Valley Lakes

The cooler Fall weather really opens up some local opportunities as the holiday crowd have departed and anglers can move in.

For urban opportunities check out Mill, Green Timbers, and Lafarge. Mill has been fishing really well on black micro leeches and chironomids.

Some valley lakes worth checking out include Rolley, Allouette, Grace, Wolf, Mike, Buntzen, Ross, Kawkawa and Jones.

For gear you can’t really go wrong with wedding bands and worms. Take the kids out to a dock and jig with a grub – lots of fun!

BC Interior

Morgan has been fishing really, with Tunkwa and Logan also providing some good Fall fishing. On the fly micro leeches (olive, and black/red) , K-marts, pumpkin heads, and scuds. For gear hot shots and quick fish are doing well.

Whoaa… I almost freaked out. I felt… light, happy, like Providence finally a nice gift for me! Even though it’s right now kind of a “might”, “maybe” thing and a million things could come and fuck it up, like PAS Youth declaring the band will corrupt the youth and get them barred from entering or imposing stupid restrictions that’ll turn the band off this country for 3 lifetimes… I still felt, wow, there is nothing like the present that is full of open doors of opportunities…

Lol.

I immediately Googled Ed Ved for a little evening fix.

The last I checked last week, Rock Corner still hasn’t brought in Backspacer the new album. Curse you, currrseee you Rock Corner. I’ll go check it again today.

I am adopting kittens. Two tiny furball brothers. And though this might seem entirely unrelated to the usual brokenbranches banter, it is not. You see, when time came to name these two little fellas I automatically looked for references in the music domain.

I weighed several options (Simon & Garfunkel? Bo & Diddley? Daft & Punk?), but there really wasn’t much competition for the final choice: Eddie and Thom, who’ve been with me since high school. Eddie the kitten is a bit of a daredevil, falling off sofas and getting into more trouble than his siblings. Thom the kitten is a more introspective chap and dare I say clumsy, but he does like to explore his surroundings.

As it happens, the real Eddie and Thom have both been very productive the last week and produced some fresh tracks. Pearl Jam have just uploaded The Fixer, first single for upcoming album Backspacer to their myspace. Thom Yorke performed solo at the Latitude Festival, looking particularly scruffy by the by, and sang a new song called The Present Tense .
I do hope my two boys turn out to be as entertaining as their namesakes!

It’s hard to believe that it’s been 18 years since we first heard that unmistakeable voice of Eddie Vedder, and they keep pushing ‘em out, and they keep amazing me. It all started with that album that still rocks my disc player to this day, Ten; there’s not a single bad song on it and for me , that’s hard to come by. Since then, they have managed to produce a new album every couple years on average with the newest one releasing September 20, 2009 titled Backspacer, Pearl Jam’s first self released album. They are also touring mostly the West Coast starting in their home town of Seattle the day after, a few in California and ending in Philidelphia in October, but sorry, they’re already sold out at all venues.

The list of tracks on the album include:

Gonna See My Friend
Got Some
The Fixer
Johnny Guitar
Just Breathe
Amongst the Waves
Unthought Known
Supersonic
Speed of Sound
Force of Nature
The End

It will be a pleasure to my ears, I’m sure.

I’m old. It’s true.

I’m old enough to be that guy that says things like, “I remember when MTV played music videos”.

So far I’ve lived through 8-tracks, records, cassettes, CDs and into the digital age.

Old.

I had an apple IIc…I think I still do, as a matter of fact. I remember black and white TVs, and life before cable or VCRs.

I remember flash cubes, and a little something called the Kodak Disc.

I remember the original versions of all the TV shows and movies being remade these days.

I remember being afraid of the nuclear bomb…(looks like even that’s getting a remake, thanks S. Korea)

I lived through both Bush presidencies, and remember Coke before it was Classic.

I mean, I remember when MTV played music videos.

More specifically, I remember watching videos on MTV during those lovely high school years–riddled with all the angst a Gen Xer could muster up, for reasons still unclear to me.

I remember coming home late at night, sometimes drunk, sometimes not. Sometimes buzzing from potential love, other times, unable to sleep because something didn’t happen, and I wasn’t sure what.

Whatever the reason, I was awake, and they hadn’t invented the internet yet.

That’s when I’d turn on MTV and watch a little show called 120 minutes. This was my education. This delivered me from hair bands, and bubble gum pop.

I’d watch videos from The Jesus and Mary Chain, Bronski Beat, New Order, The Replacements, School of Fish, Trashcan Sinatras, Robyn Hitchcock, KMFDM, Kate Bush, Echo and the Bunnymen, Erasure, Ministry, Sonic Youth, Violent Femmes, Blake Babies, Happy Mondays, Morrissey, Kitchens of Distinction, They Might Be Giants, and Hüsker Dü…

I could go on for days listing the alt.bands of yesteryear…The type of band that was once described as “college radio”, but would now be saddled with the horrible genre label “indie.” It’s a far cry from what I listen to these days, but it’s what got me to where I am now. It taught me what being alternative meant.

I mean, jesus …it introduced me to grunge. It introduced me to Nirvana and Alice in Chains and Pearl Jam…(mad props to Eddie Vedder for not overdosing and/or being dead)

It opened me up to a culture that sat just below the surface of the mainstream, at least for a little while…

Any time I stumble across a song on youtube from this era, I can’t help but pause and listen. I close my eyes and remember my youth. I remember a young, nearly optimistic kid getting his mind blown by something completely new…before I got old and started fearing change.

It almost makes me feel indestructible for a minute or two.

So in honor of that, here’s this:

and this:

and what the hell, here’s this:

Eddie Vedder

Private Life

Musical Life

Eddie’s musikalische Laufbahn beginnt faktisch an seinem 12.

Während seiner Zeit bei Pearl Jam hat Eddie auch immer wieder Songs gemeinsam mit anderen Künstlern aufgenommen oder performed, u. a. mit Temple of The Dog, Bruce Springsteen, Dave Matthews, U2, Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, Ben Harper, Tom Petty, Neil Young, Neil Finn, Beck, Mike Ness, Lyle Workman, Presidents of the United States of America, Mark Seymour, Robert Plant, Bad Religion, Red Hot Chili Peppers, R.E.M., Rolling Stones, The Strokes, Victoria Williams, My Morning Jacket, Kings of Leon, Sonic Youth, The Who, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Supersuckers, Susan Sarandon, Ministry, Chris Cornell, Jack Johnson, Ramones, Iggy Pop, Gary Heffern, Cat Power, Zeke, Peter Frampton, G.E. Smith, Wolfmother oder den verbliebenen Mitgliedern von The Doors.

Musikalische Einflüsse sind bis heute The Who, The Doors, Neil Young, The Ramones, The Beatles, The Jackson 5, Talking Heads, Sonic Youth, Fugazi, Tom Waits, The Pixies oder R.E.M.

When you tamper with an album as awesome as Ten, it begs the question: legitimate remix or self-serv

When you tamper with an album as awesome as Ten, it begs the question: legitimate remix or self-serving desecration?

Upon first listen of my favorite Pearl Jam track, Alive, I noticed how much louder it seemed. I immediately put on the original. Definitely subdued by comparison. But, also recognizable, correct. I couldn’t tell.

A few sleepless nights later, I decided to look at the waveform.

Original 1991 Tim Palmer Mix - looks good to me

2009 Brendan O'Brien Remix - Um...that can't be good, can it?

I listened again, unsure of whether these images were influencing me the wrong way. The new mix now seemed too loud, while the original mix, which the band themselves seem to regard as amateur, nonetheless used its effects to enhance Vedder’s secrets and snarls, and it sounded more evenly distributed. I listened back and forth a few more times, my frustration growing…

There’s only one way to get to the bottom of this and know once and for all whether this re-release is the real deal. A side-by-side listen to both tracks.

I rigged this up in Final Cut Pro. The top tracks represent the original 1991 version from Ten while the lower tracks are from the 2009 remix.

Personally, while I may feel guilty losing some of the bassline and all of the vocal effects, (mainly out of nostalgic loyalty for every last nuance of the original), there’s no denying that the new cut delivers more of what made the track a classic in the first place: Vedder’s powerful command of the vocals which (unfairly) draw comparisons to Robert Plant and the dynamic interplay between guitarists Stone Gossard and Mike McCready. These elements are stripped of any “produced” sound, brought front and center and made loud. As you listen to the side-by-side you can literally hear the band’s balls disappearing every time it switches back to the original mix. When Gossard’s epic solo kicked off, it laid whatever was left of my skepticism to rest.

It almost seems unfair that this new offering could become the definitive version. I’ve since heard the rest of the album and can say it’s a pretty sweet improvement that seemed totally unwarranted. Double surprise!

Winner: Alive (2009)

I know there are bound to be purists who’d have me burned for saying so…

What do you think of the new remix?
