I re-listened to one of Colleen Patrick-Goudreau’s podcasts today. Those of you who have been reading this blog for a while probably know by now that I admire Colleen greatly, she is a true inspiration for me to continue learning and writing about animals and veganism and to keep thinking compassionately.

Anyways, the podcast I listened to today is called “Turning the tables” and in the podcast she, among other things, talks about that many people believe vegans have an “agenda” to turn the whole world vegan. It reminded me of an article in the local newspaper some years ago, in 2009, in connection to a campaign by the animal activist organization Oikeutta Eläimille about ending fur farming. The article was about an own campaign the fur farming industry had started as an answer to the campaign by Oikeutta Eläimille, and it said something about that we (“the vegans” or “the activists”) start with a ban against fur and fur farming, then we want to go on to ban other types of animal farming for meat, dairy and eggs, etc.. The article was angled in a way that it seemed that this aim is something animal activists are hiding from the public, that we pretend to “only” want a ban against fur farming, but actually we want to ban all animal industry.

I was almost laughing when I read this article back then, and I still find it very ironic, because for me it has never been about any hidden agendas. I would love for the whole world to be vegan, free of animal industries, even though I don’t believe that a ban is the best way to get there. Ethical decisions like that need to come from people themselves, not from any higher authority, to be understood and have an actual point for both humans and animals. Anyway, while I was still in the local activist group we were never about hiding that we are vegans and that is what we are striving for more and more people to be. It has always been out there for people to see.

I think a vegan world would be great in so many ways, not only for the animals but also for the people and the environment. If we would show more compassion towards animals – all of the animals and not only pets, getting a more one-sided view of animals instead of the very confusing view we have now where some animals are friends and others food or products to be used – I believe it would come as a consequence that we would also be more compassionate towards one another. Veganism is not a perfect way of living or an end of something, it is one step on the way towards living as compassionately as possible, towards doing as little harm as possible.

This is supposed to be a photo of me meditating with my beloved broccoli. Instead, it ended up being the puppehs photobombing, trying to eat my broccoli, and me trying not to piss myself laughing. Perfect!

Hola gorgeous Goddess! Three and a half years ago, I made the decision to become vegetarian. I’ve been vegetarian most of that time since then, except for some holidays and a period earlier this year when I was iron-deficient. I’ve written before about accepting all those incongruous parts of myself: the vegetarian and the sometimes-not-vegetarian.

Today I wanted to share the spiritual reasons *why* I’m a vegetarian, and the differences it has made in my life.

First, some disclaimers.

Disclaimer: The Ancient Ways

I am well aware that many ancient (and modern) traditions not only meat, but include it in their spirituality, including Native American and Indigenous Australian. These are also traditions I am inspired by and have learned deeply from.

If I lived in a culture where animal-killing and meat-eating was integrated into daily and spiritual lives, I may not be vegetarian.

But for me, right now, with the disconnect between the animal being killed, the meat being eaten, and the lack of soulful consciousness around it, vegetarianism is the right spiritual choice for me.

Disclaimer: What’s good for me might not be good for you

I have many friends who are not vegetarians, and consciously choose not to be vegetarians. Some choose this for health reasons. Some feel they become ungrounded when they don’t eat meat.

I have no idea what is right and good for you. However your spirit calls you is perfect for you – and I’m not wanting to change you. All I wish to do is offer my story of my spiritual journey through vegetarianism, and share about what gorgeous gifts it has brought to my life. It may sing to you – and it may not.

And that’s utterly perfect.

I trust in your intuition, and doing what is beautiful for you. Yay!

And now… onto my story!

Why I decided to go vegetarian.

I can pin point the exact moment I decided to become a vegetarian. I was reading Ram Dass’ glorious “Be Here Now” book. In it, he talked about why his Indian gurus were vegetarian: they believed that when an animal died, it experienced a whole lot of anxiety and fear, with testosterone and adrenaline coursing through its blood. And when we eat the meat of that animal, we intake that energy too: of anxiety, fear, testosterone and adrenaline.

And in that moment, it all light-bulbed for me.

I knew that it was true. I knew that I really, really did not want to intake any of those chemicals or energies anymore.

A little background.

Many of you know I was born on a cattle farm. My childhood was big on meat-eating. My family are meat-eaters. Meat has always been a part of my life.

I also know that it’s true that animals are experiencing anxiety and adrenaline when they are slaughtered. If you think they don’t know what’s happening, consider this:

A cow spends most of her life happily eating grass in a field. About every six months, she is rounded up for a day in the yard for weaning, branding, needles, drafting and moving around. It’s a stressful day for them. It’s way out of their comfort zone.

And then, if it’s slaughter day, they are loaded up in a truck (which they’ve usually never been on before), and driven along the road at a speed and height they never usually experienced. Then they are herded off the truck and into the abbatoir. If you haven’t been to an abbatoir, you’re missing out on something totally disgusting. The smell is absolutely horrific. There is mud and blood everywhere, cattle are freaking out and nobody in their right mind will live near (or downwind of an abbatoir). Holy dinger, it’s gross-kies.

I’m not telling you this because I’m an animal activist. I’m not trying to be all doomsday conspiracy theorist. I’m trying to illustrate for those who don’t know about the process what it is like for cows. Just how far out of their comfort zone a cow is before it is killed. It might not know it’s going to die – but it doesn’t need to. It’s already got adrenaline and testosterone being flooded into its blood. It’s experiencing fear and anxiety. Just on an energy level – you are eating a cow’s most freaked out, terrified, anxious day in its life. It’s not thinking about love and flowers and grass and goodness.

What thoughts would you rather eat?

The Big Change.

So I read those words in the Ram Dass book. And thought about my life on the cattle farm (none of which I regret, or feel traumatised by.) It was just adding 1+1 together.

I wanted to live a peaceful life.

It made sense to eat food that didn’t have adrenaline and testosterone chemicals in it.

I rolled over to Chris.

Sweetie, do you mind if I become vegetarian?

I expected some resistance from him. It would mean changing all our meals and cooking – and he would be affected dramatically by it.

But there was none.

That sounds fine hon.

I paused.

You do realise I won’t be eating or cooking meat anymore at home, right?

Yep. I know. That’s fine. And as simple as that, I became vegetarian.

A word about partners.

I know not all partners would be as fine about that decision as Chris was. I know there can be strong resistance to making such a lifestyle change. I also know we all need to make the right decisions for us. We can’t live our lives not listening to our spirits, even if that means making some fairly minor inconveniences for our partners.

Are there ways you can make your lifestyle choice work for both of you?
Can you create a tasty vegetarian meal, and they can add meat if they want it?
Can they get their meaty protein intakes while eating out or during lunch?

Chris honours my choice in vegetarianism – but even if he didn’t, I’d still make that choice for me anyway. He still eats Macca’s burgers when he likes. He occasionally buys lamb or chicken to cook at home. He has a stash of frozen burger patties in the freezer if he wants some. When his body tells him to eat meat, he does. Most of the time though, he’s vegetarian. He gets to make his choices, and I get to make mine.

What happens when you become vegetarian?

There have been some significant changes in my life since becoming vegetarian.

Detox dreams

I gave up meat cold turkey (ha! punny!) that night I read that book. And over the next two to three weeks, I had the most violent, fear-filled nightmares. I talked to a lot of vegetarian friends, and they had all experienced similar things when they gave up meat.

It felt like all the built up adrenalin, anxiety and fear was leaving my body, and those awful dreams were the result of it.

After those few weeks though, they stopped. And didn’t return.

Nightmare-less

Ever since I was a kid, I have had pretty horrendous, scary nightmares at least once a week. The kind you wake up in a sweat from, ones that kinda put you off kilter for at least the next morning. They were all about being hunted, running away, fear and anxiety.

Chris was so used to me having nightmares, he’d wake up when he heard my breath getting laboured, and wake me up from them.

They were bad. Uck. Awful. And I hated having them. Especially so often.

But after I became vegetarian? And had all those detox dreams?

They stopped. Just like that.

I can count on one hand the amount of times in the last three and a half years I’ve had nightmares since then.

That is absolutely *huge* for me, and I’ve got tears in my eyes writing this. Tears at how much those dreams tormented me, and tears at the relief, gladness and joy of not having them any more.

I don’t know *why* exactly I used to have nightmares when I eat meat – and none now that I don’t – and I don’t know if it’s the case with all vegetarians. I wonder if that build up off yuck-energy-and-chemicals from eating meat manifests in nightmares. I do know it absolutely, categorically works for me.

As a case in point, recently I went back to my family’s farm for holidays. And for the first few days I was happily munching away on light, mostly raw, vegetarian foods. And then a little meat got thrown in here and there from everyone else’s meals. And before I knew it, I was hunking down on meat lasagne. And I didn’t think it would make much of a difference. Then I got the nightmares again. The ick, awful ones I used to get – the ones that made me wish for the night to end and dawn to come.

The next morning, I firmly decided meat was not worth the nightmares they brought me. And went straight back to vegetarian happy land.

Anxiety and peace levels

A month after becoming vegetarian, I was talking about the changes I’d felt with a friend who turned vegetarian before me.

And I realised that for the first time in a long time, my primary mode of feeling was peaceful. I just didn’t have the anxiety, panic or worry levels I used to have.

I just felt kinda calm. My energy felt clearer, my mind felt clearer.

And that’s remained constant since then. I have emotions and pain like everyone else – but my primary mode of feeling is usually just peaceful and easy.

When I do eat meat, I notice my anxiety levels soar again. I wonder if it’s the added chemicals from the meat… and as Ram Dass says – when we consume another animal’s meat, we are taking in their energy too. Simply: I feel *way* more peaceful and easy-going when vegetarian. And more prone to anxiety, fear and worry when I eat meat.

Living a spirit-led life

For me {and as always – you need to make the right choice for your spirit} – I always feel a bit sad when I eat another animal. That’s just me. That may not be your experience.

When I do eat meat, I apologise to it, give thanks for it’s life, and hope for it to be a sacred rite. But I always feel that twinge of guilt, of sadness, of not really wanting to think about it.

It’s incongruous to my values, and to my spirit and emotions.

And it always feels a thousand percent better when I’m living, doing, being, speaking and eating from that place that fills me up with delight.

And for me, vegetarianism sings with my values.

And that feels mighty fine. That feels like coming home.

Spiritual clarity and enlightenment

I feel clearer and healthier physically, emotionally and spiritually when I’m vegetarian. In the months after I became vegetarian, I received spiritual insights and healing at a way more advanced rate than I had before. It felt like eating meat had put kind of a misty, mud-brown guard over me. And when I stopped eating it, it was lifted. I felt brighter and shinier and happier.

It was – and is – glorious.

Quite simply, vegetarianism is an integral part of my spirituality, and what lifts my essence. I’m eating food that nourishes me, fills me with good chemicals, and loves me right back.

And that, in itself, is life changing.

Moving further on down the track…

There are other ways I’m still exploring to optimise my diet and change my energy. Vegan, wheat-free, gluten-free and raw are all part of the parcel for me that I’m still integrating into my life. Every time I eat foods which are as close to the living source as possible, I feel shinier and shinier than ever before. Maybe in a while, once I’ve become more of a raw goddess, I’ll be able to share those differences too.

For now though:

Vegetarian is the greatest physical gift I can give to my body, mind and soul. It’s brought so many changes, blessings, gifts and miracles in my life. Even if it just got rid of my nightmares, it would have been enough. Instead, it helps me be shinier, happier and more peaceful than ever before.

I really enjoyed listening to them as they made be think that I was not
such a freaky person being vegan. If you have not listened to these
guys then please do as they are very entertaining and brilliant at
commenting on all things vegan. It is an adult show so there is a few
profanities, but it fits to the stories and commentary on living in a
non-vegan world. All the podcasts have been taken down from itunes so
Vegan Freak Radio Bob and Jenna Torres, they have written a few books too
which someone has posted them on You Tube (below) Also the authors of

My friend Eddie Mah made a very interesting point he stated that if every vegan inspired two people a year to become vegan we would have a fully vegan world by 2018- now isn’t that something to strive for ?

Here are some of the supporting numbers he gave:

Right now, there are 25 million Vegans in the world.
If every one converted 2 people to the movement every year,
there would be:

75 million Vegans by 2013
225 million Vegans by 2014
675 million Vegans by 2015
2 Billion Vegans by 2016
6 Billion Vegans 2017
A Vegan Word by 2018!

I was in a cooking mood this weekend, so I decided to take advantage and try out one of the recipes

I was in a cooking mood this weekend, so I decided to take advantage and try out one of the recipes in Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World* and I must say, that after trying this recipe (and a few others previously), I have to agree – vegan cupcakes could quite possibly take over the world, or at the very least my world.

I tried out the Maple Cupcakes this time and the recipe was really simple. There were quite a few ingredients but I had all of them in the pantry already so it was easy just to ‘throw’ them together and whip up some of these amazing little cupcakes. I tried one tray of regular size and one tray of mini-cupcakes…both equally delicious, but the mini ones were extra cute (they’ll be the perfect thing to make for my sister’s baby shower in a couple of weeks – a good excuse to make vegan food for a whole new audience)!

Anyway, back to the cupcakes… they were really yummy straight from the oven while their tops were still crunchy and their middles were soft and warm but equally as good once they had cooled. The texture was lovely and soft with a subtle maple flavour that is irresistible – lucky I took a photo when they were straight out of the oven, cause I don’t think they’re going to last long in my household.

* Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World is yet another of the amazing cookbooks written by Isa Chandra Moskowitz and Terry Hope Romero. These two are an amazing combination in the vegan world of cooking. Anything that they have written, is definitely a must have!

One world full of vegan deliciousness? Um, yes please. The other week we had family in town and wanted to meet up and grab a bite to eat. We weren’t really aware of West Covina and what it had to offer, but found an awesome little place called One Veg World. It is an all vegan restaurant where they value the health of their patrons, and the planet!

Kelly ordered the Imperial Eggplant, eggplant in mildly spicy sauce with veggie protein, shitake mushroom, peas and carrots (this was the over all winner in taste!!)

I got the Orange glazed chick-un, lots of large pieces of fried and glazed seitan bites with brown rice.

Brandon had the Indian Curry Tofu; Tofu, bell pepper, zucchini, potatoes, peas, and carrots in a mild spicy, yellow curry sauce.

Big bonus, every third Wednesday of the month, they have a vegan buffet for only $11.95. I will have to go back for this!

One of my contacts on Facebook, M Butterflies Katz, started a thread where vegans from all over the world are posting their locations, to show folks how many of us there are, and how widespread veganism is. The numbers are really growing but we need more folks to share this with their contacts so we can reach more vegans! As of this moment there are 1,320 posts. Please check it out and pass it on: Tell us where you are in the world

This is really important for folks who don’t live in places like Ithaca – there are people in this thread who live in communities where they’re the only vegan. Imagine how lonely that must be! Let’s show some solidarity and pass this around so folks can see they are not alone.

Fashion is every girl and most guy’s thing nowadays. How awesome would it be if all the brands out there go cruelty free. Is there really a need to be wearing our animals? We have evolved and we now have a variety of choice of cruelty free clothing, so why do these big brands still find the need to use animal skin and fur to make their clothing? It is beyond me. But let’s celebrate the ones that are big supporters of animals!

Top 12 Designers:

1. Alabama Chanin: sustainable, organic, and recycled, Alabama Chanin specializes in slow fashion and hand-made products made by local artisans near its Florence, Ala., shop.

4. Kerin [their website is currently under construction]:pretty much the Forever 21 of the vegan world, Kerin offers affordable, trendy clothing for both men and women that is free of fur, leather, wool, ivory and silk.

5. Kuyichi :established in 2000, Netherlands-based Kuyuchi is a denim company that manufactures lines out of 100% renewable materials.

6. Loomstate: founded in 2004, Loomstate is an NYC-based casual line offering clothes made of 100% certified organic cotton.

7. Matt and Nat: when founder Inder Bedi was challenged to become a vegetarian for 30 days, he decided to create Matt & Nat, which specializes in offering cutting edge fashion while committing to never use animal products or by-products.

8. Moo shoes: also a home to rescued cats and adoption days, NYC-based Moo Shoes is a vegan-owned company that specializes in cruelty-free shoes, bags, clothing and other accessories.

9. Olsen Haus: featured in just about every mainstream fashion magazine, 100% vegan Olsen Haus is committed to showcasing alternative materials to promote fashion consciousness through example and education.

NO meat is not murder! It is tasty and delicious!!

So, being in the industry for quite some time now, I think that people in general as a whole are being more specific, and difficult to the degree that the ability to successfully please a customer has its challenges. There are people with allergies, conditions, and preferences. I can handle most requests, but then come the people that are more interested in what I call popular eating. This is where they pretend that being vegan is the new “in” thing! If you are a vegan; awesome, we just can’t be friends. Vegans to me is almost like a forced religion and who wants to be part of a cult that removes us from protein. I guess that is why I am not a virgin.

If you are allergic to something or have a preference then stick to it the whole through your dinning experience at a restaurant, don’t be a vegan all the way through then all of sudden when the dessert menu comes to the table pretend that you are allowed to have dairy, and everything else that is against the vegan world of conditions. All that makes me feel like is that you want me to jump through hoops and become a 12 step program just ot make you content, if it is that serious stay at home and cook for your damn self and you crazy children that raised to eat the most unefficient way possilbe.

You are what you eat, you are a big asshole, you pretend vegan freaks!

Have you noticed your friends and family opening up to the idea of veganism in a new way recently? I

Have you noticed your friends and family opening up to the idea of veganism in a new way recently? I know I have! I feel like the whole world is going vegan – it’s really different than just a few years ago, when I would talk to folks about it and they often thought it was just a weird fringe thing. Leave a comment to tell us if you’ve noticed this too! (Or if you’re a recent vegan, or on your way there, tell us – why now?)

Following up on yesterday’s “Veganism on the increase as more people question eating meat”, here’s more good news! In “Vegan diets becoming more popular, more mainstream” (Washington Post), Michael Hill writes,

Abstaining from animal products is an ancient practice found in cultures worldwide. But veganism never got traction in meat-loving America. Tracye McQuirter, a vegan for 23 years and author of “By Any Greens Necessary,” a vegan guide aimed at black women, said things were different until about a decade ago. While she was part of a vegan community in her hometown of Washington, she says there was little understanding beyond it.

“People did not know what it meant,” McQuirter said. “There were not a lot of options in terms of grocery stores. There was no Whole Foods… We had to basically cook everything for ourselves.”

That’s changed. More than half the 1,500 chefs polled by the National Restaurant Association for its new “What’s Hot in 2011″ list included vegan entrees as a hot trend. Vegan entrees came in at No. 71 out of 226 trends (beating out organic beer and drinkable desserts) – that’s far from No. 1, but evidence of veganism making inroads beyond urban strongholds like New York City and Los Angeles. Some chain restaurants like Souplantation and Pizza Fusion even mark vegan items on their menus…

Hey peeps! Long time no blog! My laptop is hating me lately so it’s with the IT guy at my office being fixed. I am currently blogging from my sister’s laptop in sunny California! I am so excited to be here, this trip is years overdue. I flew in Thursday afternoon and after a 6 hour flight I was definitely ready for some food.

We started Thursday with a quick meal at Vegan World in Studio City. The inside is a little rundown looking but still very clean. When I say rundown I mean that it could certainly use a coat of paint, some new counters, and a fresh look. Also, they have a picture menu up on the wall with very poor and outdated photographs. It certainly doesn’t do the food any justice at all. But, the menu is pretty large and very cheap.

I got the Beef Burger and added avocado and soy cheese and my sister got the Pepper Steak Burger. They were both a little salty but very delicious. The “beef” was little pieces, not a patty like you would expect.

I spoke with the owner because I wanted to know what kind of meat alternatives they were using because I went to an Asian vegan restaurant here in Mass before and the “meat” was very similar and they purchase from May Wah. She told me they get it from USA Soy Meat. I couldn’t find anything online about them and she did have a very hard to understand accent so I could also be mistaken.

The burger was so good but the Thai Iced Tea we got was even better. I love going to Thai restaurants and the one thing I miss is being able to have it because it’s made with dairy. Today is my last full day in LA and I have lots planned for it. I am hopefully meeting up with a fellow PPKer for lunch, doing some shopping and spending some quality time with my sis when she gets out of work. I do have a Halloween post that I am going to do but not until I get back to the East Coast.

Also, today is the beginning of Vegan MoFo! For the entire month, vegan bloggers like myself blog at least 5 times a week but many aim for everyday. This is my first year participating and I am very excited. I have some awesome things planned so stay tuned!
