Location Right on the money, sitting on the corner of the Strip with Tropicana Avenue, the busiest road intersection in the USA. There are foot bridges connecting New York New York with the MGM Grand and Excalibur.

Theme Well what can I say; it’s the Big Apple. All of the buildings outside are 1/3 scale copies of those in Manhattan including the Empire State, Chrysler and CBS buildings. There is also a Statue of liberty and a Brooklyn Bridge with a ” Coney Island” roller coaster screeching round the whole lot. The theme does not stop outside, as you enter the casino you will see manhole covers with smoke rising out of them, trees in Central Park and hotdog vendors. It is dubbed as the greatest little city in Vegas something, we think, is well earned.

Rooms NYNY used to be a cheap resort I am not sure why but now it’s generally more expensive than MGM Grandand Monte Carlo. The rooms are a little on the small side but they are nice, be warned though if you have a room facing the strip you will hear the rollercoaster. It’s quite cool that your room is in a particular New York Skyscraper like Empire State or Chrysler tower.

Attractions The Manhattan Express rollercoaster, supposedly the best in Vegas, runs round the outside of the structure speeding up to 67mph for $7 per ride. Sadly The Coney Island Emporium amusement arcade has been closed down. There are Ice shows outside, around Ellis Island, in the winter and tugboats spray water at each other in the summer.

Pool Surprisingly for a resort that has spent so much attention to detail the pool is very small and drab; this is not a place to stay if the pool is very important to you.

Shows and Entertainment Zumanity is the Cirque De Soleil offering here it’s the sensual side of Cirque, that means nudity and sexiness all held together by a drag queen compere. We loved this show it was great fun but you have to be opened minded to enjoy it and you also need to sit facing the center of the stage we were at the side and feel that we missed something for this. Coyote Ugly whilst not a show in the true sense is an interactive bar where the bar tenders dance on the bar and pour drinks directly into patrons mouths.

Dining This is the only Strip resort that has no buffet. America – 24 hour coffee shop is very good though the wait for the food can be longer than you feel it should. Il Fornai is a lovely Italian next to a stream that offers “outside” dining this is one of the best places for breakfast in Vegas. Gallaghers Steak house is pricey but very good you can see all the meat maturing in glass fridges. Nine Fine Irishman is an Irish pub offering good food and ambience. There are also several Delis and hotdog stalls as well as the village eatery. This has a variety of, eat in/take away fastish food.

Gaming 81,000 sq ft of well themed gaming fun containing nearly 2500 state of the art slot and video machines, along with about 50 tables and 7 roulette wheels. NYNY contains one of the best selections of slots on the Strip with a very large selection of my favorites; the good old low roller nickel machines. They have all the usual wheel of fortune, Adams Family, Winning Bid etc. plus Swing which we did not see elsewhere. The gaming area is a little dark and in certain parts slightly cramped but didn’t appear as noisy as some. Live acts performing at the huge bar at the front makes a nice diversion to the hundred dollars you have just lost. I don’t know if we were just lucky but we seemed to have a better hit rate on the NYNY slots than at any other Strip casino. The tables used to be covered in Central Park type tress sadly this has been removed and replaced with somthing that looks like lit up sweet wrappers.

Drinks service Like all casinos the service you receive whilst playing on the lowly nickel machines is never as good as when you are playing on the dollar ones, but the service here, even for us low rollers, was quite good. One thing – steer clear of the coffee.

Overall We love it, it’s exciting and you leave the real world for the time that you are in there. The theme works very well, with a very good variety of slot machines and friendly staff. It is our favorite casino, although it may have helped that we hit a jackpot there.

Good points The whole theme thing as you enter from the upper level is New York; it works well and is great fun.

Bad points I don’t think that there is anything that I dislike about NYNY apart from that at busy times we had to wait for machine attendants but this could have been the same anywhere.

Top Tip If you ride the rollercoaster and love it you can by re-ride tickets for about half price or if you really love it you can buy an unlimited daily ride pass.

I first arrived in Las Vegas Labour Day weekend 1992, we arrived at night by car and at this time this was the only way to to arrive in Las Vegas. From miles away you started seeing the faint gleam of neon as you got nearer as you took twists and corners in the road the light got brighter and the excitement rose. I had never been to Las Vegas and to be honest had not read much about it, this visit was just a short stop on a road trip from San Diego to San Francisco, I knew that there were casinos there and I knew that there were shows but nothing more than that. The Las Vegas we arrived to was amazing and immediately I fell in love with the town. On this first trip I had gaming lessons at The Sands, munched 3 castle burgers for 99c at the Hacienda, had 99c Shrimp cocktails, surf and turf for $3.99 and buffets for less than than the cost of Starbucks Latte. I did a Bungee jump at AJ Hackett which was located behind Ballys when you got up the tower it was pitch black to the desert on the East, on what is now a highly populated valley. In 1992 you could get all sorts of freebies from almost every Casino just for gracing it with your presence it was a totally different town.

On my first visit there was no Mandalay Bay, no Luxor, no MGM Grand, no Monte Carlo, no NYNY, No Paris, Bellagio or Venetian, Treasure Island was not built and the Desert Inn proudly sat on the lot now occupied by Wynn. Aside from the casinos there was little reason to come to Vegas except to gamble and maybe to have a stopover or use it as a base for a trip to the Grand Canyon, Vegas was not the playground it is today, many thought that Vegas’s time had gone and Atlantic City would be the new entertainment Mecca and had it not been for the belief, hard work and commitment of the likes of Steve Wynn and Kirk Kerkorian then this may well have been the case and the Las Vegas that I love today would not be there.

Since 1992 I have visited Las Vegas countless times and intend to do so for as long as I am able, in fact this Christmas will be my second in succession that I spend in Las Vegas. I have stayed in many hotels at all levels of comfort from Circus Circus at the value end to Wynn and Bellagio for the height of Las Vegas luxury. I have enjoyed some more than others and this is not always based on price.

Vegas has changed beyond recognition since my first short visit and I have no doubt that this will be the case forever, some changes will be for the better and some for th worse, prices will go up prices will come down Las Vegas will change to what the visitors want and for what they are prepared to pay for. The one thing that I don’t think will change is that there will always be something for everyone to love in Las Vegas and just when you think that you have seen everything Las Vegas will re-write the rule book and amaze you even more.

In these days of credit crunch and high gas prices I thought I would write a few posts showing how to save money in Las Vegas and still have a great trip and am kicking it off withover 40 trips to Vegas some on a large budget and some on very small budgets a post on Cheap hotels.

I have stayed at almost every property from Bellagio, Wynn and Encore to Excalibur, Circus Circus and Sahara. I have eaten at places on every level of the spectrum from Eiffel at Paris LV and Mix at Mandalay Bay to Peppermill and the Circus Circus buffet. I have had best seats at Cirque Shows and front row seats to Vegas “A list” headliners I also been to shows where tickets cost $5. Whilst I would not say that my most enjoyable ones have been the ones where I have been on the tightest budget I have still had great trips without, spending  very much money. I have discovered that the cheapest options do not always save the most money, in this post I hope to give you some pointers from my experience on how to get the most out of a trip to Las Vegas when on a budget. You can make huge savings  on how you book and when you come there is a post all ready on this here.
 

Your room will take up some of your budget but not as much as you think, in Las Vegas there are rooms that will suit every pocket and in most cases you generally get what you pay for. Now the cheapest rooms on the Strip can  be found at Rivera, Circus Circus , Sahara and Stratosphere. The problem that you have with all of these resorts is that the location will mean that you will end up spending money on transportation to get to the parts of the strip that you want to be at, even if you buy monorail or Deuce bus passes the cost of these can be as much as the difference between staying in one of these hotels and staying at a better hotel in a better location.

Excalibur, Tropicana, Bills, and Imperial Palace are the cheap options with good locations Luxor is also worth a mention as some of the offers  that  they have make bring the prices on a par  with these. I have stayed at all of these hotels and unless there is a great offer on at Luxor Excalibur is my budget choice. The rooms are large  and the hotel is clean, not too smoky and it has a great location., with good staff, good cheap eats and also they have some of the best offers around offering not only rates as low as $25 per night but also often include food or entertainment credits. I once stayed at Excalibur on a $40 a night rate for 2 nights this included 2 free buffets, 2 free spa passes, 2 free drinks and some 2 4 1 coupons the value of this  was about $120, more than I paid  for  total for my stay. Wherever you stay if you get any extras included make sure you use them millions of dollars worth of these coupons are thrown away each year.

If you get a very good rate at an expensive hotel you will spend more money than you would if you stay at a cheaper hotel, as everything is more expensive, coffee, breakfast, water or soda in the shop and of course meals and drinks at the bar. Even if you try not to spend money you will spend more if you stay in an expensive resort than if you stay in a cheaper one.

You can of course stay in a cheaper hotel Downtown (Fremont Street) or off Strip, whilst I will on a longer trip have a  couple of nights downtown its not where you want to stay for your Vegas vacation. I have stayed off Strip once and would not do it again as it just does not fell like you are in Vegas and the transportation to where you want to be is inconvenient and can be costly.

For class and a view I would pick Eiffel Tower at Paris Hotel, or the MIX at The HOTEL Mandalay Bay. Buffet my choice is Bellagio and for Steak Nin9e Steak House in the Palms and Brunch at Simons at the Palms pool.

Pool Parties. This is a toss-up as I love to go topless (if you know what I mean), Bare Pool at Mirage, Wet Republic at MGM or Nite Tours pool bash once a month at Morea Pool

Online Show Tickets. Go to “Vegas on Demand” purchase tickets for all shows, your tickets can go to your cell phone! Or ½ off tickets is great for left over seats that have not sold the day of the show.

Shows I Like. My buddy Louie Anderson at Excalibur, La Reve at Wynn, Phantom of the Opera at Venetian, (my neighbor) Steve Wyrick Magic Planet Hollywood, Penn & Teller.

Best Limousine service. Nite Tours 33 passenger nightclub on wheels or Nite Tours 16 passenger high-end Mercedes limo or Celebrity Coaches, Lou at Earth Buses or Peter Lee at Las Vegas Limousine.

Best hangover cure. Drink LOTS of Water, Gatorade, Rockstar, eat ginger, or just start drinking again! You can always find a drink 24/7 in

Vegas Free Shows on the Strip. Bellagio water show with music, the new Volcano at Mirage, Pirate show at TI, watching the drunks walk the strip is always good entertainment or the Bible thumpers yelling out “You are a Sinner”.

Best deals I have found on hotel rooms., Monte Carlo $49, Mandalay Bayall inclusive deal $99, , Luxor form $50, MGM Grand I like going to “Vegas Uncovered” for the best hotel deals.

Cool place to spend the day.Besides pool parties you should see Red Rock Canyon for hiking or the Grand Canyon. Rent a Ferrari or Lamborghini had and go for a ride!

It seems that Virgin Atlantic is soon to lose its exclusive direct route from the the UK to Las Vegas which it has been enjoying since BMI stopped its direct flights from Manchester in April and since MaxJet went under Xmas 2007.British Airways are about to annouce that they to will be flying daily from London to Las VegasI have to be honest my preferred route is LHR to LAS with United Airlines via either SFO or LAX but lets hope that this competition can do something to shrink the fares and offer us even better value, to match the best value Las Vegas hotel rooms that can be found here.

Officials for the carrier are scheduled to announce a new direct daily service between McCarran International Airport and London’s Heathrow Airport, the busiest international airport in the world. The service, scheduled to begin in October, has been in the works for years and the decision by British Airways to proceed despite the global recession is a major vote of confidence in the future of Las Vegas, which has been hit particularly hard by the economic downturn.

The plan is for daily service to begin Oct. 25, with a flight arriving in Las Vegas at 5:10 p.m. The return trip to London will depart at 7 p.m., Lampl said. The airline will use a Boeing 777 configured with 274 seats, 24 of which will be “world traveler plus,” 36 business-class with seats that recline fully to 180 degrees and 214 economy class. Lampl said the company identified 35 major cities, including Rome; Prague, Czech Republic; Stockholm, Sweden; and Paris, from which travelers could connect to Las Vegas with less than two hours waiting at Heathrow.

If British Airways flies the route at 72 percent load factor, the average load factor for the airline in the most recent reporting period, it would mean about 12,000 arrivals and departures at McCarran a month. The number could be higher if British Airways matches the 92 percent load factor Virgin Atlantic achieves on its route from a smaller airport with less connection potential. Great Britain is the No. 3 provider of foreign tourists to Las Vegas behind Canada and Mexico, according to the LVCVA.

Heavily disounted Las Vegas hotel rooms

No one likes to pay over the odds and I never pay more for I have to for anything and this includes my room in Vegas. Sure you sometimes I have to pay more for a room that others but it is still important for me to make sure that I still pay the lowest rate possible.

There are two ways to reduce the amount that you pay, “when you stay” and “how you book” to get the very best rate you need to combine the two. Whilst it is not always possible to have control over when you go it is still possible to make huge savings by being smart how you book.

When you stay
We all know that the time of year can change the cost of your room wherever you stay but in Las Vegas this is magnified a room one night can cost $50 and the next night $350 this was the case for us at MGM Grand in September 2007. I do not know of anywhere else in the World where rates can change as much as the do in Las Vegas.

Friday and Saturday nights in Las Vegas are the most expensive of the week, in some cases a Friday or Saturday night can cost the same as the rest if the week combined. If you can avoid staying over the weekend do so, this could mean getting out of town for a weekend (we often go to the Grand canyon for a night) or get a cheaper hotel for the weekend we have stayed downtown and off strip just for the weekend.

Check what is on, although there are over 100,000 rooms in Vegas on a busy conference week they can fill up and this affects the price hugely, check what conferences, events and concerts are on when you plan to visit, if you don’t want to se what is on then it is bet to reschedule if you can.

Holidays, Las Vegas if a holiday town and this is when it is at its busiest as a result this is when room rates really go through the roof so if you can avoid being in Vegas over a holiday you will save money.

Time of year, the two weeks before Xmas are the slowest and cheapest of the year and New Years Eve the most expensive night of the year. In July and August rates drop because of the heat, May June and October can be expensive as this is when the weather is good but not the crazy heat that you have in July and August.

How to book
You can not only save a load of money by the way in which you book you can also get extras free food, drinks, entertainment and even return airfares or free nights.

Book direct with the hotel this is probably the most important thing to do, if you book direct you are usually guaranteed to get the best price, by booking direct unless you book a non refundable rate (this will be clear when you book) if the rate drops after you have booked you contact the hotel and they will drop your rate to match this, of course if the rate goes up you will still only pay the rate that you have booked at. We once paid $45 per room per night for Luxor the same room was being advertised at £110 ($150) per night in a brochure.  By booking direct you only pay the first night as a deposit and this is fully refundable if you cancel or change your booking up to 72 hours before check in.

If you see a deal you like and a rate you are happy with book it straight away as rates change regularly and good deals are often pulled with no notice, as long as you don’t book a non refundable deal you can always cancel later on if something better comes along.  Don’t assume that the rate you see this morning will still be there tomorrow or even later today !!

Use the discounts that still allow you book directly with the hotel, if you see a deal that asks you to pay the entire stay up front 9 times out of 10 it is not directly with the hotel (only exclusion  is a non refundable offer) and therefore you don’t get the advantages of booking direct . There are only so many rooms available on each deal and when that number has been hit the deal will be pulled so book when you see a rate you are happy with.

Keep checking the hotel’s website to see if the rate drops if it does get in touch with the
Hotel and get them to drop your rate.

Book early, Unlike most other places you may visit booking late is not the way to get a good deal booking as early as possible is key, as I have explained you can always cancel if your plans change or you see a better deal later or get the hotel to drop your rate.

As long as you have booked direct then you should be able to have any comps deducted off of your room stay. Its easier to get somemoney back this way than you may think, you generically will not get much if anything off for low denomination slot play but table games and poker just ask to be rated. Last time I was at MGM Grand 4 hours of poker on the $1/2 table got me $40 off of my room bill. You need to go to the players club booth say the night before checkout and ask what you are entitled to and they will adjust your bill there and then. One tip if you plan to use some comp against your room its far better if they see action off of you each day, make sure something happens on your card even if you stick it in a slot and just play $10 this will work for you getting comps. If you have not booked direct no Casino can comp any of your room charges. If you book direct also try the $20 trick !!

Location Wynn is the last hotel on the North on the main part of the Strip, on the site of the Desert Inn next to Palazzo and opposite the Fashion Show Mall.

Theme It’s what Steve Wynn does best first at Golden Nugget, then at Mirage and Bellagio and now at Wynn, luxury. I guess you could say European luxury, or that is what Mr Wynn would like you to say everything is there to show opulence and to look expensive, now expense spared. If money is not the object then the objects here all cost a stack of money.

Attractions The showpiece is the “ Lake of Dreams ” a 3 acre lake which contains loads of lights to make a full multimedia show. There is a 170ft Mountain and 5 waterfalls, the show uses the water falls as screens, there are loads of bushes and flowers around them but I was not impresses with this show. As with Bellagio there is a Conservatory but smaller but really nice, no rollercoaster’s here instead you have Wynn’s gallery which hits the mark for the more refined and concerning people who are the targets of his marketers. There is also a Ferrari garage that you have to pay $10 to enter!

Pool The pools here are nice rather like Bellagio style and quality are the order of the day rather than wave machines and waterfalls.

Rooms, All of the rooms at Wynn are called suites we stayed in a Panorama suite on the 57^th floor wow what a view ! The bed was very comftable second only to the MGM Grand and all of the furnishings are top quality, the maid service comes twice a day and there is a turndown service. The bathrooms are big with a nice tub and shower as well as a TV in there, I know it is sad to watch TV in Vegas but the selection of channels at Wynn was far better than anywhere else we have stayed on the Strip. The mini bard was well stocked but very expensive and you get charged just for moving stuff !

Shows and Entertainment The Encore Theatre is now home to amazing all rounder and Steve Wynn favourite Danny Gans. Wynn’s other show is La Reve its a Cirque De Soleil type show and like O performed in water !

Dining You would have thought that with a resort this up market that the buffet would not have featured but you would have been wrong and it is rather modestly called The Buffet (B$17.95, L£21.95 D Sun-Thur $33.95 Fri & Sat $37.95 and Weekend Brunch $28.95 and an extra $6 for Champagne to be included. I have not eaten here but despite the price the people I have spoken to who have think its excellent value but the queues can regularly be over 2 hours long. As you would expect there is a selection of other restaurants at Wynn mainly with a European flavour don’t expect a cheap meal but that does not mean that you can’t expect value. Most of the fine dining establishments are run by celebrity chefs. If you eat at the SW make sure you get a table outside and ask to have one with a good view of the show. The coffee shop at eth drugstore has fantastic coffee and great fruit salads but like everything else at Wynn it’s pricey. Zooacrackers is a great Deli with tower sandwiches and the Terrace Point Café which is open 24/7is very good again all heavy on the pocket.

Gaming It’s big and surprisingly there are a load of slots including nickels and pennies with good pay out. There are stacks of tables and the norm minimum is $15 on BJ and other card games but most tables particularly at weekends are much higher. Craps sometimes starts as low as $10! Don’t bother asking to get rated if you are playing less than $25 per hand it’s not worth it. The players card is very good and well worth joining. If you were told you were in the Bellagio you would probably believe it.

Drinks service Steve Wynn knows how to look after his customers even if you are on the penny slots polite waitresses come up regularly and serve you with strong drinks this is one of the best drinks services on the Strip.

Overall The service from all the staff from the check in clerk to the valet parker to maid is the great the best you will get in Vegas. This place oozes luxury, it’s a nice treat but unless you have loads of money (and we don’t) you cant get the most out of it, that said however short lived you do feel like a star whilst you are there.

Good points The attention to detail is amazing everything is quality and the attentiveness of the staff.

Bad points The price everything from sodas in the shop to ice cream its expensive this is a place for rich folk. The location can be a pain it is just that little bit too far down the Strip and makes it feel and effort to go anywhere else.

Location Good North Strip location sitting in between the Mirage and the Fashion Show Mall, to which there is a bridge and nearly opposite the Venetian and Wynn, if you are really lazy you can take a free tram to Mirage but we think it takes longer than the walk.

Theme Much of the fabulous pirate theme has been replaced but thank goodness not all of it. TI still has a Caribbean nautical feel even if the bars are cooler now, its just grown up a bit. TI has started to aim for the higher spending beautiful people market and the theme has had to soften accordingly. I still love it but would prefer a few more skull and crossbones and couple of Captain Jack Sparrows walking round but not quite as much as my girlfriend for some reason.

Rooms All of the rooms have been renovated and are now slightly more grown up, the rooms are not huge but haev allways been nice and comftable. Part of the renovation put new beds in every room which I have been told are the same as the beds at MGM Grand which in my opinion are the best in Las Vegas

Attractions The Pirate battle has not contrary to some reports ceased but been replaced with the Sexy Sirens of TI, now this is good because it means you don’t have to suffer a load of colonials kicking the Brits arse so many times a day but not so good as the classic swashbuckler for me. Still one of the best and most popular freebies on the Strip and aimed at trendy cool 20/30/40 something dude and dudette market ! Its well worth making time to see two full sized ships battle it out on the high seas but the show itself is now pretty poor.

Pool The pool is small and its not up to par with the rest of the resort which is suprising when you think about the crowd that TI is trying to attract.

Shows and Entertainment TI has Mystere as its Cirque De Soleil performance here and in my opinion the best Cirque show in Vegas, if you go to see Mystere you don’t need to book and expensive seat just make sutra you are not at the side. The show is full of amazing acrobatics so amazing that your brain thinks your eyes are lying. TI has no lounge as such and no other shows other than Sirens.

Dining The Treasure Island Buffet (B:$12.00, L:$15.00 D:$20.00 weekends $26.00 ) is smaller than most and the food is OK but not up to the keeping of everything else in the fine establishment, they do however bring you a carafe of your chosen drink which is good as it saves you waiting for refills. Buccaneer Bay has been replaced by social house which is a pity but it’s good even if the portions are a bit on the small size. There are 6 other restaurants here including Italian, Chinese and a very posh steak house, it must be noted that all food at Treasure Island is expensive. Along with these eateries there is a very good but expensive coffee shop. Kahunaville is one exception its cheap and quite frankly not very good, we eat there once when we were hungry and their were queues everywhere else and wished we had not. TI has Khalurville as it’s fun offering which I am sure is very good for drinks and fun, we ate there and the food was the worst that I have had in Las Vegas.

Gaming 51,152 sq ft of gaming space I was actually surprised when doing the research for this site to find out it was so small, it feels much bigger. There are 2,200 slot machines lots of them with pirate type themes where you have to line up three cannon balls to attempt to sink a boat ect, surprisingly there are loads of nickel machines here. Nearly 70 tables adorn the floor with the minimum stake being $5 but as soon as people start coming through the doors these rise. The casino has a low roof and dimmed lights but does not feel either claustrophobic or smoky. There are lots of bars scattered around and they have some of the best bar staff in Vegas all of the bars are classy and relaxed we like it here.

Drinks service The drinks themselves are good but you always seem to wait an age both for a waitress and then for the drink to arrive.

Overall This is a very well themed joint that is aiming to attract a young trendy well heeled bunch of punters, with new bars and clubs. Its not quite where it thinks it is its not Wynn, Mirage, Caesars or Bellagio and you feel that the casino thinks it is. The staff are great and the whole place really does have a good feel Hosting one of the best free shows on the Strip adds to the attraction of this casino. Its worth noting that this is the only place in Vegas and maybe the World where you can get married on a pirate ship

Good points Mystere possibly the best show in town, but the bars come a close second

Bad points The crush of trying to get in through the front door whilst the sirens of TI is going on, and the general cost of food and drinks.

Top Tip If you are staying at TI, when the Sirens show is on there is revered standing area for, just show security your room key. If you ask for a Strip view there is a strong chance that you will be facing the sirens show which is great the first couple of times but the firewaorks soon become an annoyance.

As well as offering some of the best value rooms in Las Vegas form as low as $24 per night, Excalibur have a new for a mere $25 only $7 more than a standard dinner buffet at Excalibur and less than the cost of a dinner buffet at say Mandalay Bay or Bellagio. This deal is open tyo everyone you do not have to be a guest at the Excalibur. If you play it cleverly you can get 4 meals out of your pass, if you have a late Breakfast, Lunch or Dinner when you purchase the pass and then have the same meal but at an earlier time the next day, for example on day one have breakfast at 10am, then lunch at say 3pm and dinner at 8pm and then breakfast the following day at 9am this will work out at $6.25 per meal on top of this you can of course pop in when you feel like it for a snack of soda !!!

Not only do you get up to 4 meals for $25 you also get a VIP line pass meaning that you will not be standing in line but eating. The all you can eat buffet pass can be purchased from the roundtable cashier.

The Excalibur Buffet does have a slightly bad press but in my experience this is unfair I have eaten there several times and whilst you are not getting the same level of food or service as you do at say Mandalay Bay or Mirage but the food is edible, there is a good choice and it’s always hot. Some people complain that you have to get your own drinks but this for me is actually better as you don’t have to wait for refills, the choice of drinks is very good and by serving myself I can make some interesting combinations. The buffet sometimes includes Tom Turkey and Prime Rib, the breakfast buffet at the roundtable is my favourite sitting as well as the normal American favourites it includes a good choice of Mexican breakfasts and has my wife’s all time favourite eggs Benedict.

All in all this is a very good deal and is the first step in being able to compile an accurate rate of costs before you go to Las Vegas well done Excalibur let us wait and see who follows. This is a true Las Vegas bargain and will I am sure in time be up there with the legendary Ellis Island Steak Special.

LocationYou have already hit the jackpot with this great location, sitting on the corner of the Strip with Tropicana Ave the busiest road intersection in the USA. There are foot bridges connecting the MGM with the Tropicana, New York New York and Excalibur. There is also a Las Vegas monorail station connecting MGM with the rest of the East side of the strip, this will be extended to the airport but that is a few years away.

Theme Supposedly Hollywood glamour, other than the big lion at the entrance there is nothing that noticeably sets it aside from any other casino. The first time I went to Vegas they had an Emerald city/yellow brick road theme as you entered with the characters from the movie (minus Toto who had been stolen).With thunder and lightning and all, this was pretty cool but that has gone and been replaced with a smarter more serious image.

Rooms MGM has two basic classes of rooms Grand Tower and West Wing, Grand tower can come with one or two beds and have loads of space, they have nice bathrooms and toiletries and all have a sofa and desk these are some of the largest standard rooms in Las Vegas, the West wing rooms are contempory and modern but smaller and darker and the bathroom is sort of integrated into the room, you have only a shower not a bather  and you can only get these with one bed. MGM has a number of suite options but there are only really three that I can afford, Bungalow, Celebrity Spa and Hollywood,. A bungalow suite is a big room with a large seating area, a Celebrity Spa Suite is a Bungalow suite with a large bathroom with a spa in it and a Hollywood Suite a two rooms suite with a large bathroom. All of these are nice suites and contrary to belief most are available on most floors so you are no more likely to get a good view because you are in a suite than a room, also be aware that your room will not be assigned until check in so you may not get the suite that you have booked.

Attractions MGM used to have the best theme park on the Strip but sadly this has been removed and replaced with high roller accommodation. The loss of the theme park aside MGM still boasts some great attractions; the lion’s habitat where you can see lions and cubs paraded in a glass „habitat” and a state of the art amusement arcade which has all the latest video offerings as well as some stunning virtual reality games. MGM has screening rooms for upcoming TV shows you get free tickets and you watch shows yet to be aired and give you opinion this happens every day and is totally free of charge. I  think it also fair to include the rainforest cafe as an attraction as it is so much more than just somwhere to eat.

Pool The MGM Grand pool complex  is fantastic, you guess that when as you enter you are offered a Map! There are 5 pools, various spa baths and an amazing Lazy River MGM opens at least one pool every day of the year.

Shows and Entertainment There are currently two shows at The MGM Cirque de Soleil’s KA and Crazy Horse Paris (over 18 only). The Hollywood theatre is used to host headliners it was Tom Jones on our last visit David Copperfield is there as I type. The MGM Grand Garden Arena is one of the biggest venues in Vegas and is used for concerts and boxing.   MGM has a good selection of good bars added to Studio 54 nightclub and the Tabu ultra lounge if you wanted to you need not go anywhere else for your entertainment. MGM is also home to MGM GRand Arena this is one of the premier venues in Las Vegas it plays host to the biggest boxing events in the US such as Ricky Hatton, De La Hoya and Mayweather and holds concerts such as Maddonna, Billy Joel and Britney. MGM I feel also has the best selection of non Ultra lounges and the best bars on the Strip its great for relaxing drinks in a non club enviroment.

Dining MGM  is great for dining , the Grand Buffet (B$13.99, $15.49 D$25.99 and Champagne Brunch $20.48 or $18.99 without the champagne) this is a good buffet its not a contender for the best buffet crown but its good and good value, be warned that the queues can be long and the “champagne” on the brunch is not that hot but for $2.50 unlimited who can complain ! There is a good food court for quick eating including, Nathan’s Hotdogs, a pizza place  and Haagen Daz’s. The 24hr coffee shop is big and can take a while for food to be served and sometimes is not as hot as it should be. The rainforest café is a good bet for younger diners with animated robot animals and thunder storms. MGM has 8 offerings in the fine dining class Nob Hill, Pearl, Joel Robuchan, L’Atelier, Craftsteak, Fiamma, Sea Blue and Fiamma. There are 4 casual restaurants the very good Wolfgand Puck café, The grand Wok, Emeril’s and The Grand Wok. The MGM also has the obligatory 24 hour Starbucks.

Gaming171,500 sq ft WOW its big its very big contains nearly 4000 slot machines over 100 tables and 17 roulette wheels table minimums start at the usual Strip rate of $10 but these can be few and far between in busy periods. Some of this gaming space has been give to a Sports book and poker room. There are several huge sections of penny and nickel machines but they tend to be away from the main sections of the casino and you feel like you are hidden from main view. The most annoying thing about this casino floor is that it is so big you get lost you must at all times follow the signs hanging form the roof and even then its still easy to get lost and disorientated. The size of the casino does work in its favour as well though even in busy times if you wander around for long enough you can usually find a quieter area.

Drinks service As a nickel player I would say that the drink service sucks. They just don’t want to give you anything, when I moved on to quarter machines it was better but only marginally. I think that this is in part to do with the size of the casino because even once you have managed to place your order you can wait another 30 minutes for the drink to arrive. This is not the place to come to if you want to get loaded, Note this seemed to have improved last visit.

Overall A huge lively resort with everything under one roof, nice big rooms in a great location and great rates can be found when they run offers.

Good points The location is great, the pool is great the dining options probably the best on the Strip. Unlike many other resorts they seem to have got the timing right for the check in you don’t seem to have to wait too long and the beds are the most comftable in Las Vegas if not the world.

Bad points It gets crowded really crowded even walking through the Casino at peak times is a mission. Like every other resort they assign rooms at check in, this can mean that you do not get what you think that you have booked, your suite, bed or smoking option may not be available and you may be assigned something else.

Top Tip Check in at the airport whilst waiting for your luggage this saves time when you get to the resort. Do not take up on the offer of an “upgrade” to a West Wing room they are smaller and miles away from anywhere stick with the Grand Tower.

Location The “Trop” is located on the South Strip surprisingly enough at the junction with Tropicana Avenue; this junction is the busiest in Las Vegas and indeed the whole of the United States. There are bridges to MGM Grand and Excalibur so you can see it is really happening here. Being at the far south end of the Strip transfers from the airport are very quick.

Theme The Tropicana has the theme of a South Sea Island this theme is eminent around the fantastic pool but is not noticeable in the casino but raises its head again in the bedroom.

Attractions There is a small amusement arcade by the entrance to the swimming pool. The Tropicana used to house the “Casino Legends Hall of Fame” this was brilliant and it’s a travesty that it has been shut down. There is apparently a wildlife walk well we never saw it so it must be small. You get free magic shows and shows by the “birdman” outside the Trop. Inside you used to have the Titanic exhibition and BODIES the exhibition, displaying bodies made up from well erm dead people, there are admission charges for both of these but these are sadly now closed with the tittanic exhibition shortly to reopen at Luxor

Pool The pool is amazing a lagoon with little beaches, mountains, waterfalls and in the summer swim up blackjack. In season every Saturday night there is a Miss Hawaiian Tropic competition.

Shows and Entertainment Tropicana is home to the Folies Bergere based on the French music hall of the same name. This is a sexy but fun cabaret (late show topless) with a variety of acts, originally all the dancers came from France but now the Americans have learnt how to dance so use home grown talent. Dirk Arthur a magician performs his cunning tricks here and is now the only act on the Strip to use living big cats. There is also a comedy show and lounge.

Dining Our breakfast we had consisted of a couple of latte’s e which was not bad and a doughnut the quality of the coffee was however surpassed buy the 20 minutes I had to queue to get it. There is no food court as such. We once had the misfortune of eating at the Tropicana buffet, B:$10.99, L:$11.99, D:$15.50 ad Champagne Sunday Brunch $16.25. This is by far the worst buffet I have eaten at anywhere the choice was small and the food had been kept warm for far too long. There was a 241 special on drinks we all drank soda’s (which were free) and still got brought two each time by a crazy waiter that took personal offence to you moving your glass, even to drink from! The Trop has an Italian, a deli , a 24 hour coffee shop and a lobster and steak restaurant after my experience of the buffet I will not be testing any of these

Gaming Cramped, noisy and smoky are the words best used to describe this casino to be fair though there are a great variety of machines and hundreds of nickel ones for cheapskates and low rollers like me. There are about a 45 or so cramped tables. Tropicana advertise having a $5 Blackjack table open all day every day its often only one and very busy $10 is more realistic minimum limit. The roof above the tables is glass looks old and is probably the most attractive feature of this casino. I had a craps lesson here that was both fun and informative, I must add that I did not nor feel that I was expected to bet even $1 of my money on their craps tables after my lesson and indeed I did not. They also have some deal where you pay $20 and get $40 worth of play on “special” machines if you don’t win a jackpot they give you a “valuable” gift steer clear the machines are not as loose as normal machines and the gift is not worth $20.

Drinks service The Depends on the time of day there seemed to be a real shortage of cocktail waitresses in the day and early evening but after midnight they seem to be serving you non stop .

Overall This is the Strip’s little secret; cheap rooms in ta good location but be warned Tropicana has filed for Chapetr 11 protection. The Casino is loud and cramped; the rooms are large but tired. No complaints, as over all you are paying the same as you would at a Motel 6 but getting a full service resort in the heart of the Strip. Stay there whilst you still can as it is one of the last Vegas old school ex mob ran casinos and  it may well be one of the next great casino’s to be turned to a pile of dust.

Good points Great pool, good location and cheap

Bad points The rooms are miles from the check in desk and the casino is between you and the lifts. The Garden rooms are terrible and the casino very smoky. You can now get better rates at Excalibur which is a better hotel.

Top Tips Even if you don’t join them elsewhere join the players club here you get all sorts of freebies that we take home as gifts. At the entrance to the casino by the MGM footbridge there is a big free slot machine you can have a go once a day and win prizes like packs of cards and free show tickets.

Mirage is my favorite hotel on the Las Vegas Strip we had part fo our wedding reception there and have a booking for this Christmas, the Volcano my joint favorite free show, it has been closed now for sometime and has been rebuilt to make it even better, the Volcano will re open on December 8th 2009 and the good folks at Mirage have put together some special deals to coincide with this and I have listed them below.

Mirage was the first Casino that Steve Wynn built and to be honest without this wonderful property it is unlikely that the Las Vegas that we all know and love would be here as it is today. When Mirage was built Vegas was in decline Atlantic City was the place to gamble and had taken most of the East Coast trade, President Regan had passed the Indian act and Indian Casinos were about to spring up all over the country, everyone was thinking that Vegas would melt away. Steve had a hard job raising the funds to build this massive total luxury no expense spared resort but he managed mainly on junk bonds. Mirage still stands today as one of the premier properties on the Strip and is one of the few where it still feels like Vegas and not Disneyland, all of the rooms have been refurbished in 2008 and with the offers below this possibly makes it the best value resort on the Las Vegas Strip, but hey don’t take my word for it see for yourself.

Location Center Strip next to Ceasers oppersite Paris could not really be any better.

Theme Well it’s amazing! Theme based on a northern Italian Village on the shores of Lake Como, did I say on the shores? Well they built the lake as well but missed out the usual beaches that you would find in Italy. The theme doesn’t stop at the village you can see across the lake; the shopping arcade has a very Italian feel to it. As does the pool that you would not be surprised to find in a very upmarket Tuscany Villa. The only thing that does not fit in with this theme is the completely over the top luxury, this is just not found in Italian Villages! I must admit though the two themes added together do work well for the well-heeled patrons of the magnificent Bellagio.

Attractions Bellagio is stacked full of attractions all slightly different from the usual ones that are aimed at getting you through the doors of a Strip casino. You will not find a rollercoaster or a fire breathing dragon here, you will however see the Bellagio gallery of fine art holding some of the world’s most expensive pictures in it including Van Gough’s sunflowers. The biggest, most obvious and voted the best freebie on the Strip is the dancing fountains, these are brilliant. Over 1200 water cannons shooting water 240 ft in the air and “dancing” to a variety of music from Sinatra to Pavarotti. The glass mural roof above the check in desk is not to my taste, but I can see attraction, 3D flowers, which must have cost no small fortune. There is a lovely glass domed conservatory housing thousands of exotic flowers and plants. The displays in the conservatory change with the seasons and seem to get better each year well worth a visit.

Pool Like everything else at Bellagio the pool is class, no waterslides or fake beaches here but 5 pools in classic Italian style with hand carved stone features. There are 4 whirlpool tubs and also a lap pool for those who feel the need to work off the buffet!

Shows and Entertainment Bellagio is home to Cirque De Soleil’s “O” this was the first Cirque show to come to Vegas and is preformed in water ! “Cirque du Soleil® weaves an aquatic tapestry of artistry, surrealism and theatrical romance in the timeless production, “O™.” The international cast of world-class acrobats, synchronized swimmers, divers and characters perform in, on, and above water to create a breathtaking experience in a magnificent theatre reminiscent of a European opera house.” With names such as Hermes, Rolex, Tiffany and Chanel my wife and I assume many others find the upmarket stores here great entertainment.

Dining The buffet has been crowned king of the strip but at $27.95 going up to $35.95 at weekends for dinner it crowns the pricing as well (B$14.95, L$19.95 and $28.95 for Sunday Brunch with champagne). The no children rule here is strictly enforced ensuring that little fingers are kept out of such delights as crab claws, venison and duck breast offerings. We did not find a food court as such but a very good coffee shop opposite the swimming pool. Bellagio has a host of gourmet restaurants with prices to match; many of these are situated around the lake providing the best possible view of the fountain shows. Bellagio Picasso’s Mediterranean restaurant must be mentioned as it has only original Picasso’s on its walls, they are lesser known works and not anything special but its typical of the Bellagio “money no object” policy.

Gaming It’s big but seems quieter than most other Casinos on the Strip. The tables are canopied and the limits are higher than elsewhere on the Strip with the minimum often $25. There are not as many slot machines here and the ones that there are have the volume reduced on them and the pay out trays even seem quieter. The Bellagio does not have very many nickel machines but a does have a good selection of quarter upward machines. The casino, like the shopping arcade, is over run by security guards.

Drinks service On quarter and nickel slots you are lucky to see a cocktail waitress; once you get on the tables even the $10 tables the service is very good.

Overall For well heeled patrons who want that ultimate luxury; this is your place. Everything here is the very best that money can buy. Great theme and magical fountains a very different affair from many of her rivals. Though I some say tha Bellagio has lost its crown to Wynn !

Good points The dancing fountains, I could watch them for hours.

Bad points The secuirity can be a bit snotty and you can feel that some of staff look down their noses at the low rollers such as myself.

Top Tip Buy a travel mug at Palios coffee shop for $6.49 and refill it for free with coffee, tea or soda for the duration of your visit.

Having hotels from only a few dollars night to suites costing 10’s of thousands Las Vegas caters well for every budget. I have stayed in most of the properties on the Strip (not the $10k + suites – oh how I wish) and the cheapest does not always represent the best value, in fact some of the cheaper properties are just plain nasty or/and in poor locations. Many people say “oh I am only sleeping in my room” this maybe the case I still want to go back to a place that is clean and wake up feeling that I want to get off of the property as quickly as I can, even if you only sleep there it’s still nice to be able to have a little play or a drink before turning in at night and getting a nice breakfast in the morning. My view is that I you are traveling to Las Vegas its going to cost you money and you are going to spend money and the cost difference between a cheap hotel and a decent hotel is often only a few dollars and this is money well spent, I mean cutting your gaming budget by $10 per day can mean you are staying somewhere nice and not spending at least that every day in cabs. I also think that staying on the Strip is a must for Vegas first timers you want to spend your time on the Strip and in the hotels and not in cabs or on shuttles.

In recent years the prices at Luxor has come down I don’t know why as they have spend millions improving the resort putting in new clubs, LAX and Cathouse and several new cool bars. I always used to spend at least my first night in Vegas at Luxor as it was close to the airport and it has a real “I’m here in Vegas” feel.

The pyramid rooms are slightly cheaper than tower rooms and I prefer them, they are large clean and you open the door directly on to a walkway in the Atrium and can hear all the clinking of machines and look down directly on to the mezzanine as soon as you walk out of your room, this for me is priceless. The spa suites are awesome and much cheaper than most other suites in town of a similar or even smaller size, they have a separate living room and a huge spa under the window which at night is very cool, as all spa suites are in the corners your view has two different aspects.

Luxor has great dining options both the buffet and the Pyramid coffee shop are excellent and there are several other more expensive restaurants as well as the food court with Nathan’s, McDonalds etc.

Luxor has a great Mezzanine floor this has a video arcade and an IMAX cinema, here there is also a shopping Mall that connects Luxor to Mandalay Bay, as this is a separate floor from the casino which means it’s easier for those with Children, though Luxor is not a resort that I have ever seen over run with kids.

Luxor has a huge pool which never seems to be too crowded (though it can be a little short of shade) and a very large spa and gym. The entertainment program at Luxor is also very good, Believe is a new Cirque De Soleil show staring Criss Angel, Carrot Top is one of the funniest guys in Vegas and there is a sexy topless review called Fantasy.

Luxor is connected to Mandalay Bay and Excalibur both indoor walkways and a monorail. Whilst Luxor may not be a Bellagio or a Wynn it offers the full Vegas experience for a very small cost, most of the specials have great extras thrown in and you would not get a hotel of this standard anywhere else in the world for anything close to the price that you pay at Luxor.

Staying Vegas for me is about value not about getting the very cheapest room, if I don’t like the property or don’t like the room then this to me is not value. I have probably spent more nights in Las Vegas at Luxor than any other hotel and I feel that Luxor is a good full service resort and the only budget thing about Luxor, Las Vegas is the price.

Location Centre Strip; attached to Ballys, next door to Planet Hollywood and dead opposite the Bellagio. Should this not be enough for you there is a monorail to the MGM Grand. Location! Location! Location! You had better believe it – this is A1.

Theme Well its Paris and it is probably the best themed resort on the Strip, with a 1/3 scale Eiffel tower and Arc de Triomphe, the Opera House, Parc Monceau and the Rue de la Paix they have done marvels. The themeing does not end at the door, all of the security staff dress as gendarmes and staff will use a couple of French words every now and again. The floors are cobbled and French styled street lamps are present, there are posters that appear not to have been taken down properly, just left on pillars like in France. The only way in which you know that you are not in France is the cleanliness of the place and the friendliness of the staff. The one exception being the Spa where the staff are rude and disorganized.

Attractions Well I guess I have listed most of them above. Just walking through this delightful complex is an attraction on its own, you can go up the Eiffel tower for about $6 but we didn’t want to leave the casino floor.

Pool The pool here gets some bad reviews and I think that this is unfair; it’s a standard type of pool, quite big in the shadow of the Eiffel tower with nice plants. Sure there is no lagoon and no waterslides but I think it’s classy and nice and usually kid free.

Shows and Entertainment The rather unoriginally named “Ooh La La” is a sexy (topless) French style review this is the main show at Paris Las Vegas but its not as good as Crazy Horse Paris . Anthony Cools has a show he is an adult rated Hypnotist this show is quite new and the theater only holds 220 people so you will be close but I don’t know how good it is.

Dining As you would expect the grub here is top notch. There is a brilliant take away coffee shop which we had to queue up for ages but well worth it for fresh pastries and coffee only beaten by the Luxor. There is a first class buffet (B: $13.99 L: $17.99 D: $24.99 Sunday Champagne Brunch $24.99) we looked and drooled but did not eat due to the long queue and my lack of patience. The Eiffel Tower restaurant is one of the most expensive in town, the food is great and the view is amazing, the staff are wonderful and the ambience perfect, this is our favorite Vegas fine dining establishment. There is a very good 24hr café though quite expensive and a further selection of top quality but expensive restaurants. Everything culinary here has good reviews and prices to match.

Gaming With 85,000sq ft of casino space it doesn’t seem as big as many other, smaller casinos; it is easy to navigate partially due to you being able to see one of the legs of the Eiffel Tower wherever you are. All of the tables have wrought iron look canopies and the whole feel around the tables is nice. There are 2,500 slots of all denominations and over a hundred tables with minimums at $5 and plenty of them. There is a very large selection of nickel machines, which surprised me, but they do feel a bit squeezed in and as a result it does get a little cramped when the casino is busy. It is cool being able to play on a slot or at a table and see the legs of the Eiffel tower coming through the roof.

Drinks service Stunning, we got some of the best drinks service here, quick and strong, and they kept flowing and flowing. Helping us to prove what we had secretly always known; gambling and large amounts of alcohol are a great mix.

Overall A well themed luxury casino with a great range of games, good staff and great food. The atmosphere is easy and relaxed; we love it.

Good points The theme, you can get all of the benefits of going to France by coming here and not having to suffer the bits I don’t like.

Bad points The Staff in the spa were terrible and the machines in the nickel section can feel a cramped and everything seemed very expensive.

Top Tip Book if you want to eat at Eiffel its expensive but worth it, you can cut through Ballys to get to the Monorail station.
