After taking out about 6 books for my Politics essay, I haven’t even gone about reading them yet… #TopStudent

I’ve watched about 30 episodes of Dragonball Z (reserve your judgement), listened to an Anfield Wrap, played a 6-a-side game (not gonna tell you how that went) and eaten.

However, I rediscovered drawing this weekend.

It’s been a while since I put pencil to paper, mainly because I left my A3 Sketchpad at home when I moved to Leeds.

My Friday evening saw me draw a tribute to CM Punk. Not sure why I actually decided to draw it, but maybe it’s because I gave it a go in my Seminar earlier in the day.

I couldn’t find a red sharpie, so I used a blue instead, with a black felt tip for broad outline and a black fine liner for finer detail.

I tend to draw with things on in the background, so whilst drawing the CM Punk logo, I had Dragonball Z on in the background. It was around the time of the Cell saga, where Vegeta turns into Super Vegeta (boss).

So I decided to draw a Vegeta/CM Punk mash up. Normally I draw existing images, but this time I thought I’d do something different, combining two influences. I finished it last night, and I’m quite chuffed with both.

So here are the drawings in question…

Our thoughts turned to Leek and Potato however due to the horrid heat Perth has been experiencing there either wasn’t any leek to be found in the supermarkets or what was found was in such a poor condition! Having leek growing in my own vegetable garden, I know it takes thirty weeks to mature after it’s been transplanted and it can take sixteen or more weeks to be ready to transplant.

Explains why it’s expensive.

Instead I made a huge pot of sweet potato soup, for some reason I always make quantities on the excessive side. We’ve had some soup, I’ve sent her home with two litres and I think there is at least another four litres to go.

Take two parts sweet potato, one part white potato and one part brown onion; peeled and diced. Add in garlic, parsley and thyme. If you like it spicy, add chilli or pepper to taste. Measure how much cold water it takes to cover an inch or two above the vegetables and then mix a quantity of Vegeta stock powder according to instruction. Stir well, pop a lid on the pot and bring it to boil.  Reduce the heat to a fast simmer (think of it as not quite boiling) and let the soup go until the potatoes fall to pieces at a touch and the liquid has reduced in volume a bit. If you want a very thick soup, keep on simmering.

I say parts, it’s easier than saying my quantities which were two kilos of sweet potato, one kilo of white potato and one kilo of onion plus a good five litres of water. Yes, I have a pot which fits all of that with room to boil.

Let the soup cool and then blend with a Bamix type blender. If you don’t have one of these you can try mashing the potatoes or using a good old blender. Just make sure your soup is cold because hot soup can splatter and burn, and even crack the blenders plastic/glass jug. Once blended don’t worry about adding any milk or cream, it’s fantastic as is.

You can add a knob of butter as you serve it, a swirl of cream, croutons, or just butter your bread and dunk away.

Pues bien, como ya le ocurrió a KITT, Vegeta perderá dentro de poco la exclusividad del único de esos dos aspectos que todavía es raro en este mundo. Así como hace unos años uno podía imaginarse al coche fantástico bien frustrado cuando se empezó a generalizar el uso de navegador con guía de voz en los vehículos, estos últimos meses ya suena con fuerza y proximidad el eco de las Google Glass. En cosa de unos años y si nos logra encaprichar mucho antes de que seamos pobres como ratas de verdad, los ya treintañeros de las generaciones de las que hablábamos podremos analizar las cosas que estén a nuestra vista a través de nuestras gafas. Y no solo eso: también haremos videoconferencias, pondremos de moda las fotografías tipo “esto veían mis ojos”, tendremos el mail del curro en nuestra narices y, por supuesto, chatearemos como locos.

En esta fase post-embrionaria de Google Glass (¿o pre-parto?), esta empresa tan cool ha sabido utilizar como nadie sus propios recursos de difusión: se les ha pedido a miles de probadores instalados en la sociedad trend-setter y en los medios más modernos que hablen a bombo y platillo en sus blogs, webs, suplementos y programas. Y lo que es más sencillo y efectivo todavía: se ha montado un vídeo con las bondades del prototipo, que ya bate récords en Youtube (a los que contribuimos embebiéndolo bajo estas líneas). El asunto es que se hable de este avance, muy bien o muy mal, pero que nos pique el gusanillo. Es lo que nos transmiten, por ejemplo, en The Verge. Que, como pasa con las drogas, el sexo duro o el lujo insultante, queramos probarlo.

Tampoco sería un disparate afirmar que a Google -y a todas las empresas de corte tecnológico- le interesa que siga sofisticándose la eterna disputa moral acerca de los avances en este ámbito. Incluso aunque estas gafas se plantearan masivamente como el renglón torcido de nuestra evolución, a Google le iría bien: más vendería. Porque admitámoslo, las posturas distópicas nos dan morbo y casi nunca nos resistimos a avanzar hacia ellas. El panóptico que planteaba Orwell, en lugar de darnos miedo, nos atraía. ¿Por qué? Porque no temíamos ser el vigilado con la desmesura con la que ansiábamos ser ese personaje elíptico, pero personaje al fin y al cabo, el Gran Hermano. Deseábamos verlo todo, y cuidado con lo que deseas, que igual se cumple: años después, damos la razón a Sartori y entendemos la broma de Orwell (ya tenía cara de pillo, el hombre): los más jóvenes no conocen la novela, pero ya entienden que el Gran Hermano somos nosotros, viendo a esos imbéciles que se encierran en una casa teñidos de rubio y se parten los brazos en un salto inconsciente, digno de un Lemming.

Por suerte (para Google y para todos nosotros), también se puede discutir. El argumento de que las primeras imprentas también asustaban es, por más que manido, válido. Hoy, puedo hablar gratis con mi madre desde un pueblucho croata, y la maleta cargada de una veintena de libros que me llevé en mi último viaje a la Argentina es solo un nostálgico recuerdo gracias a mi Kindle.

Además, el mundo tiene sus paradojas y, en las fronteras y los límites de las cosas, de repente lo negro se vuelve blanco y lo malo, bueno: en el último año, la caja tonta ha parido algo tan lúcido como Black Mirror, la serie de la que ya habló Imanol Crespo. Contados capítulos independientes que narran, precisamente, situaciones distópicas relacionadas con el funcionamiento de la sociedad y sus tecnologías hoy en día o en un futuro próximo. Sin párrafos tan cansinos como estos y con maestría, se aborda en pocos minutos lo inimaginable. El tercer capítulo de la primera temporada, por ejemplo, habla de lo que, de existir en un futuro, sería la superevolución de Google Glass. Y, por supuesto, de nuestras reacciones a su existencia: ¿Cómo viviríamos si pudiéramos registrar nuestra vida entera, con exacta precisión, y acudir a nuestro archivo siempre que quisiéramos? En otras palabras, ¿cómo sería este mundo una vez abolida y refundada la Memoria?

Para ello todavía falta un tiempo, aunque no así para que la situación que plantea otro capítulo de Black Mirror sea verosímil: alguien secuestra a la princesa y le obliga a decir en un vídeo que será asesinada a tal hora a no ser que el gobernante de turno aparezca en directo y en abierto un rato antes… follándose a un cerdo. El vídeo se cuelga en Youtube et voilà, ya tenemos situación distópica. Perdón: ya tenemos planteamiento, a secas.

Porque no es distópico, es real. Hoy ya funcionamos así, el morbo es nuestro razonamiento vehicular. Vemos programas de jóvenes maleducados sin futuro, y nos lo tomamos a risa, y nos motiva ver quién la dirá más gorda todavía, con qué más nos podremos carcajear. Luego unos niños llegan al Parlamento Europeo y salen al estrado a expresarse con dificultades y la lógica actitud infantil ante el auditorio, que está cargado de diplomáticos a los que no les importa un comino ni lo que dirán los niños ni el fruto de su trabajo. De repente, los niños ejecutan el hábito ancestral de la mímesis, y se ponen a imitar a los tipos de Gandía Shore. Allí, en mitad de esa institución ya sobradamente podrida.

Y sin embargo (y para acabar), es curioso que podamos volver a Vegeta para honrarlo antes de aceptar la muerte del ídolo. Porque los insultos de Vegeta ya no son nada comparados con las ‘genialidades’ de Rafa Mora, Labrador y compañía. Nuestro gran personaje se queda sin un legado particular, a pesar de que, comparando con los ‘palabros’ que hoy vocea el televisor, el forzudo Vegeta siempre pareció un intelectual. Lo suyo, sin duda, tenía más gracia que esas evasivas de Cospedal, que esas cifras mareantes de Bárcenas, que ese saber-no-estar de Rajoy, que ese oportunismo de Rubalcaba, que ese contrato precario de tu gran multinacional, que esos monarcas cazadores, que esos cardenales calentándose las sotanas y decidiendo al representante terrenal de un dios novelesco sentaditos en sus butacas de oro. Esas faltas de respeto no tienen gracia, no son ingeniosas, pareciera que ni están trabajadas.

Estudiemos, seamos eruditos del insulto. Ya que nos puede la impotencia de no saber cambiar lo que nos rodea y de no sabernos cambiar nosotros, ya que aceptamos irremediablemente que un día nos reiremos con Gandía Shore, ya que sabemos que el morbo de verlo y saberlo todo y de parecerlo nos llevará a ‘avanzar’, a comprarnos una Google Glass… ya que cuando nos quejemos, probablemente no tengamos razón, hagámoslo con un poco de gracia.

Haríamos bien en honrar al superguerrero cultivando un poco nuestras palabrotas. Lo decía el Negro Fontanarrosa: “Nos van a hacer falta”.

I took some chicken thigh from the freezer in the morning so I diced that up, added peas, corn, a single broccoli floret perched in the centre of the mix, garlic, parsley, basil, oregano, olives, a sprinkling of Vegeta and white pepper.

This was all brought together using a small amount of butter and some cornflour to help keep it bound after it was cooked.

Because it was a little too watery from the cornflour mix (might I add always mix your cornflour with cold water first and gradually add more water as needed), I put the sheet of puff pastry plastic side down on a bowl large enough to accommodate the filling alone. When spooning the filling in, it slowly sank down and helped get the edges together while giving a nice shape to the parcel.

The puff pastry edges were sealed together and then overall brushed with a small amount of butter. Baked in a 180c fan forced oven until any juices that escaped were clear. This was about 40 minutes.

It looks huge because I prefer using smaller plates but it is one single puff pastry sheet, standard size as what you find in the supermarket. It was quick and easy to put together and definitely ticked the box for being comforting and healthy but looking like it shouldn’t be

Random idea I got while listening to the DragonBall Kai opening, since Goku’s English voice actor sung a version of it.

Possible (animated?) collaboration with my friend, Goku-san.

And yes. I’m not dead.

But enough about good vs bad carbs, and on to baked potatoes.

I picked up a bag of baby Nadine potatoes the other day and baked them. I then decided I wanted to do it again so I thought I would share with you! The potatoes were about the size of a large egg, perfect for roasting whole and easily eaten in a couple of bites. If you have a few spuds that are larger than the others, cut them in half so they cook at the same rate.

I set my oven to about 160 Celsius fan forced and let them bake until golden. It could be an hour it could be faster, the whole idea is to get a nice golden crispy outside skin and soft fluffy insides. Some people like to boil the potatoes first but I’m not too worried about that as they cook well enough.

Pop your potatoes in a shallow baking pan and drizzle them with olive oil (or oil of your choice). Shake the pan to cover the potatoes well. You can also do this step in a plastic freezer bag if you prefer. Sprinkle the potatoes with a few teaspoons of Vegeta to taste and shake the pan to spread this over the potatoes well.

Once they’re in the oven and close to being done, the skin goes a little wrinkly and golden as below:

I’ve mentioned Vegeta in a couple of posts, it’s a versatile vegetable powdered stock that I use for soups and seasoning baked veg. It’s a great all-rounder for adding in flavour to almost everything. I love sprinkling it over vegetables before they go in to be baked and works well in any kind of soup. It also does actually contain little flakes of dried vegetables.

But like much of literature, I recognize it’s not necessarily the literality of what is represented so much as the thematic. Take, for instance, this clip:

Now, clearly we have three not-insignificant villains being completely outclassed by Trunks and Goten — whom you will recall the plot made Super Saiyans specifically so it could plausibly/interestingly introduce the concept of character fusion.

Let’s examine the circumstances around when these villains were first defeated:

Pui Pui (the first pictured in the clip) was destroyed by a base-level Vegeta who had trained so hard for the past seven years he was capable of achieving Cell-saga Gohan power.

Yakon was destroyed after Super Saiyan Goku — who could reach Super Saiyan 3 levels — overwhelmed him with energy.

Android 19 was destroyed after a protracted struggle with Super Saiyan Vegeta (though Vegeta did intentionally prolong the battle for his own satisfaction).

Flash forward.

In GT, base Goten and Trunks destroy them all in one attack. They’re so powerful even Android 19, whom you might recall could absorb energy, was destroyed by an energy attack.

They’re so powerful they defy reason. And that’s the point.

Dragonball GT Goten and Trunks, the high school-aged versions of the seven-and-eight-year-old prodigies seen in GT, possess unfathomable potential that they haven’t even begun to tap. Potential that, in a respect, they’ve failed.

Remember how much of a fuss it was that Goku could reach Super Saiyan in the first place? Remember Gohan’s nearly three-minute-long “power comes in response to a need” clip? [link] And yet, during the tournament saga, Goten and Trunks can go SSJ without even trying.

And that’s the point.

Circumstances made Goku, Vegeta and Gohan into fighters, first and foremost. The universe practically demanded it of them. Without the resolve they were forged with, evil would have triumphed. But Goten and Trunks, on the other hand, never had to feel anything close to what Goku felt when he was in his coma.

Goten and Trunks have practically always had the power they needed to overcome what was necessary. But they never had to overcome anything. The universe demanded nothing of them, aside from one brief, shining moment. They were the wrong people for the wrong time.

I remember the first time I saw a commercial for GT, when I was, like, 10 years old. I remember seeing a brief clip of what I was sure was Goten and Trunks flying forward together in an attack. I was certain the narrative would focus on them — you know, GT, Goten + Trunks.

Then when I finally started watching GT, I remember being unfathomably disappointed. No Goten, no Trunks. Just a lot more of Goku and Vegeta.

First I had to deal with Gohan being cast aside. Now I had to deal with Goten and Trunks being disregarded as well.

But you know what? The Dragonball universe is better for it. It has always been about circumstance producing the hero it needed. Goku, you might remember, should have been a villain; his initial purpose for being sent to Earth as a baby was to ultimately destroy it. But by a quirk of fate, he became Earth’s champion and hero, the person who ultimately defended it from nearly every single one of its threats (Turles [link] being the representation of what would’ve happened if Goku would’ve stayed evil). And during his time, there was many threats. A lifetime of threats, as it were.

Gohan, by another quirk, was its champion for a moment. The same with Goten and Trunks. But the same circumstances that propped them up also let them down. Right when it could have made them into warriors greater than the universe had ever seen, it instead made them into students and scholars. It brought peace at exactly the wrong time for their development as fighters.

But not everything is about fighting. Not even Dragonball.

The series has always been about creating a world better than the one you lived in. It was always about the few who could do one thing protecting the many who could do much more. It wasn’t Goku’s fighting potential that got him to Namek, after all; it was only because civilization gave him the right opportunity.

And it isn’t Vegeta’s insistence that fighting is all that matters that shapes the worldview of the series. So what if Goten and Trunks are “soft,” in his words. [link] So what if what Future Trunks faced in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber [link] is leagues beyond (in terms of suffering and desperation) what Present Trunks did [link].

Goten and Trunks weren’t the heroes the universe produced. Neither was Gohan. It was Goku and Vegeta, through their lifetimes of fighting, who were the only ones capable of sustaining the motivation needed to be the best, no matter what. Goten and Trunks were only shaped to be what the moment required. And in that respect. they did fine. Goten made those around him happy. Trunks led a multi-national corporation into continued success. They were not failures to the world; they were failures to the abstract idea that a person who can fight well should fight better.

And whose idea was that? A person who watched his entire race (including his father) be destroyed? A person who would be a pacifist academic if he didn’t have a fight tossed in front of him every two minutes for the first twenty years of his life?

Hardly good role models.
