Sorry it’s been so long since my last craft piece. It’s a little hard to explain, so it took me a while to figure out how.

Difficulty: Basic

You Will Need:

1 Roll of duct tape (any color)

A flat, clean workspace

Scissors

Decorating tools (I recommend sharpies and clear packing tape)

Sticky-back Velcro

Instructions:

1. Make an approximately 10×8 inch rectangle of duct tape fabric (DTF), or size to suit your needs. I usually eyeball it.

2. Fold it in half so it looks like, well, an open wallet.

3. Tape the ends shut.

4. To make credit card slots, make small pieces of DTF and tape them to the inside cover of the wallet.

5. To make an id slot, measure a piece of DTF a little larger than your id, cut out the middle a little smaller than your id, and tape it to the inside cover as well.

6. Put velcro strips on it to hold the wallet shut when not in use.

7. Decorate as desired. I recommend drawing designs in permanent marker and protecting them with packing tape.

Happy taping!

-DTA

Left to Lose: 40

There’s no better way to get excited about Christmas than starting the time-honoured tradition of decorating your home… and I don’t just mean the kids, I know that once I’ve decorated my house it’s officially Christmas… but like many others I never really know when I should start.

People used to decorate their homes on Christmas Eve, but these days the tradition of 12 days before and 12 days after is still popular with many. There are many superstitions regarding Christmas Decorations some of which have been retained (we still hang mistletoe in the belief that luck favours those who kiss under it and goes against those who avoid it.) Nevertheless some people feel that decorating is rather a pointless task, but lets remember that not only does this time-honoured tradition go back to pre-Christian times… it also makes us feel excited about forthcoming festivities (even for those who make a fuss about it but still do it!)

Perhaps for those people I can offer some time saving tips on how to decorate your home and still have time to get a bit of gift-wrapping done too! Decorating the tree is the obvious decoration to start with – but the way you put away your tree decorations is an important part to making this easy. Don’t just throw your lights and baubles into a carrier bag when taking them down (you know who you are!) – make life easier by untangling lights and boxing your tinsel and baubles separately. Top tips for decorating include the following:

Have a theme, for example stick to one colour

For tree decorations think about proportion – put larger decorations at the bottom and smaller ones at the top of the tree. The same applies to your other decorations too

Hang Christmas cards down door and window frames for a quick and easy way to add some colour – not only is this a cheap way to decorate rooms, it also adds a personal element to your decorations. Make this even easier with Christmas Card Hangers such as Velcro® Hanging Card Kit

Tinsel and beads don’t need to be kept to the tree – attach them to banisters and picture frames with Velcro® Christmas Decoration Clips

Make your Christmas decorating even easier by checking out our range of new Velcro® products.
Which Way Do I Go! Ut-oh, needless to say I have partially and momentarily turned my back on chasing

Which Way Do I Go!

Ut-oh, needless to say I have partially and momentarily turned my back on chasing health and I wholeheartedly apologize. With that being said, I’m back focused and ready to continue my journey. So I slipped, I had some family members come down and visit, showed them the town for an extended weekend and ended up putting my health on the back burner. Here’s the ironic part, the effort that I put in from the beginning of the month and before seems to be take effect on my body. The muscles are slightly more defined and my waist, although not washboard is shrinking.

The proof: my favorite pair of jeans and a t-shirt that should probably be converted into a rag. The jeans usually have no problem holding onto my waist as I have always gave them something to hold onto. And then there’s the t-shirt which will Velcro itself to my gut, proudly displaying where I need to do the most work.

Today this casual attire had a certain looseness to it and I couldn’t be more ecstatic! What I actually set out to do is working. and all though I slipped, I am still heading in the right direction. So it’s back to finding my balance in life and merging back onto the path of chasing health. 2 weeks and I can see a difference with my own eyes.

Don’t want to sound like a broken record but if your wondering what I did exercise wise, here it is. Bike ride UPHILL 3 days to 4 days out of the week for about a half an hour. Kettlebell swings 3 sets of 10 to 12 at least twice a day and one day where I challenged myself to do 300 swings (needed a stress reliever that day)
hit the gym almost everyday -2 days. My eating habits, unfortunately have been all over the place like a wild bull but I’m roping in during the work week with some self prepared meals and that’s it. As always feel free to leave a dollar, or comment!

Sound of Stereo – Zipper EP

Ou Est Le Swimming Pool – Dance The Way I Feel (Armand Van Helden Club Mix)

Fans zeker eens uitchecken!

This little tidbit has taken on a life of its own since I first introduced it months ago. And as I approach my one-year Walmart anniversary (it’s OK to be jealous), I feel it to be an opportune time to share it with this here interwebz.

Disclaimer: The majority of these Random Rhonda quotes were actually spoken by the legendary Rhonda herself. The rest are “Rhonda-like” quotes, which will probably be spoken by Rhonda at some point in the future. Then again, she’s pretty fuckin random, so who knows.

*walks into Walmart singing Taylor Dayne*

ME: Hey Rhonda!
Rhonda: My pickle is cold.
ME: Ummm…OK…
Rhonda: You’ll go on your first break at 4:13pm and I’ll say hi to you.
ME: Right…
Rhonda: I need a drink now.
ME: OK then…

*4:13pm – walking outside for my first break*

Rhonda: Have a good a first break!

*looks at watch*

ME: *mumbles* How the fuck does she do that?

*approximately 15 minutes later*

Rhonda: How was I suppossed to know they made shoes with Velcro on them? I’m just workin.
ME: What?
Rhonda: That’s what they used to strap the astronauts to the Moon.
ME: They used Velcro to strap the astronauts to the Moon?
Rhonda: …and Tang. Hey, I’m just workin’.

*returns to Electronics*

ME: Hey guys…does Rhonda the door-greeter ever say stuff to you
that’s like really, really…
Dan: …random and off the wall?
ME: Yeah!
Dan: Yeah, every time I see her. Why? What did she say to you?
ME: That we strapped the astronauts to the Moon using Velcro and Tang.
Dan: Sounds like her. Yeah, after lunch as I was walking out of the break room, she was coming in and I held the door open for her. She told me to have a nice shit. Which was weird, because I was really on my way to the bathroom to take a shit.
ME: She’s like Nostradamus…only of shitting.

*walking out for last break*

[alarm goes off]

Rhonda: Ma’am, can I see your receipt please? Ma’am? Hey, lady!

*Rhonda chases and tackles customer*

Customer 2: Excuse me, but that’s my daughter.
Rhonda: I need to see the bitch’s receipt.
Customer 2: What!? She’s 3!
Rhonda: If I had a nickel for every time I heard that…OK, she’s clean. Merry Christmas.
Customer 2: Fuck you, bitch!
Rhonda: Hey, I’m just workin.

ME: Hey, Keisha…what’s up?
Keisha: Very little…how’s electronics?
ME: Just getting shit ready for Black Friday.
Keisha: What kind of sales are gonna be back there?
ME: Laptops, 360s, like three or four TVs…whose prices I can’t remember at the moment…
Keisha: Where are the Wii accessories…like controllers and stuff? My boyfriend wants one of them Wii Motion Plus things.
ME: All the video game accessories are on the opposite side of the Xbox and PS3 game cases. There may be some in the cases, but for…

Rhonda: *shouts* You must be Jewish!
ME: What?
Rhonda: You use a lot of hand motions…you must be Jewish!
ME: Actually I’m Irish, Ger…
Rhonda: I’ll be right back. I’m gonna go hide my purse.

[next day]

ME: Hey Rhonda!
Rhonda: My asshole hurts.
ME: *facepalm*
Rhonda: I think I wiped it too hard.
ME:…wow!

Today I became a fully paid up member of the court of make and do, all hail prit stick, bacofoil and sticky back plastic.

The letter said “Your child Spider has been allocated the role of an angel in the school’s upcoming Christmas performance. Please ensure that they have a costume available at school no later than 9th December”. My first thought was “wow, that’s a major bit of miscasting”, my second thought was “what the heck does a boy angel wear”.

Tonight I set to, in true Blue Peter fashion. OK so Mum had already done the difficult part, she’s cut holes in a pillowcase and hemmed the edges to stop it fraying and then cut 2 wings out of some white semi polystyrene flexible packaging membrane and then sent it home with Spider with instructions to us to “stiffen the wings somehow”.

The unstiff wings sat there on the table for over a week waiting for someone to give them a bit of body, and tonight with less than 12 hours to go I finally tackled them…except I took a detour first, being as I am the queen of procrastination, and fashioned a halo out of white card and baco foil, but then when I could avoid it no longer I turned my mind to how to stiffen the wings and the solution came by accident when looking in the wrapping paper drawer for the sellotape. You see out house is, to put it mildly, still a little bit disorganised, so I was not at all surprised to find in with the wrapping paper some garden wire, used for tying up plants and attaching to walls for plants to climb up.

So I have created a wire framework and stuck it in between the 4 membrane wings and then stuck the whole lot together with sellotape and very tacky glue, which claims to dry clear, if not Spider is going to look like a butterfly with lots of swirls and dots on his wings.

The real difficult bit has yet to come. Now we have to attach the wings to the pillowcase. Fortunately Husband used to be married to someone who was no stranger to sticky back plastic etc and he brought to the marriage a whole host of strange things that she left behind, including some sticky backed velcro strips…but I might leave that for Mum to attach as Spider has long since gone to bed and I can’t work out where to stick the strips…

So, my last post was all about singing the praises of velcro and my analysis of it as a suitable mat

So, my last post was all about singing the praises of velcro and my analysis of it as a suitable material for design in this project. From that, I refined an earlier concept that looked at its use to alert staff members to the removal of high-risk items in the store – click the link and you’ll get a look at one of my concept sheets.

From the previous mock-up shown earlier, a number of modifications were made to improve the display:

The amount of velcro was reduced to lower unit cost, as well as improving the flexibility of the unit.

The straps were separated to allow them to better conform to the product inside.

A buckle was added to improve the tightness of the straps.

The straps themselves were changed to a nylon construction, allowing them to fit various shapes of product.

The pictures below give a simple idea of how it works in practice.

Item is wrapped in display straps, preventing removal without opening as directed

Customer can then remove the item simply by pulling down on the tab, as indicated.Velcro tabs beneath the straps are pulled apart, and the retailer is alerted to the removal of the item.

With the velcro tabs released, the product straps are loosened enough that the product can be slipped out of the loops, and taken to the till.

However! There still remains the fact that the unit, whilst tip-top for operating with larger items like spray cans, is ultimately flawed for smaller goods – it struggles with quantity. This also comes into play when considering the space needed for the display, and how much it can store in that area… try arranging a plethora of spray cans side by side, when they have to be removed horizontally, for example.

Ultimately, whilst this idea has been my main concept of late, I’ll be dropping it. Realistically, the concept of my project is not just the item at the end – it’s the use of sound to raise staff awareness that I’m interested in, and the final result will simply be the vehicle for its integration in the retail environment. Not sure I should have used the word ’simply’ there…

Recently, I had a custom order to make a Nancy Drew Duct Tape Sleuth Kit. The buyer wanted it to look similar to the sleuth kit in the Nancy Drew movie. This new bag is different from the original bag I had made. For instance, the straps are made of canvas material, I used Velcro instead of a buckle, and the overall design of the bag is different. I am selling the whole kit with shipping for $60. Here are the pictures of it:

“Sir, like I said before: you have violated the terms of agreement. Your contract will be term

“Sir, like I said before: you have violated the terms of agreement. Your contract will be terminated and we are forced to send this matter to collection if you choose not to pay the $450 that you owe us. It really is that simple.”

Nothing was ever that simple. The system had screwed him one last time and this time, he wasn’t going to take it.

“Listen you. What’s your name again? Melinda. Fine. Listen one last time. I asked you a simple question: how is it that if my phone is stolen while I am on vacation and someone runs up the minutes by making international calls in the 48 hours that I had no way of contacting you, I can not only have my contract canceled but you can immediately jump to sending me to collections? Where is the logic in this scenario?”

He could hear Melinda breathing heavily on the other end of the phone, each breath strained as if it were her last. He imagined an overweight white woman in polka-dotted spandex, Velcro New Balances, permed blond hair, squatting in a gray, musty cube, its walls covered with pictures of her little Chihuahua, an old pink shirt with finger-sized holes on the ends, and a pervasive smell of mothballs and leftover Chinese food.

“Sir, I don’t know the logic you are referring to but what I do know is I don’t appreciate your tone. I work long hours behind a desk taking a number of calls from individuals such as yourself with differing sad stories. I am not immune to your suffering but I will say that I have heard it all before and that’s the truth.”

He felt the anger boil up inside again, thought of the cabbie earlier in the week that drove him across town to a meeting he was already late to and then explained to him that in order to pay, he needed to call in his card number to the dispatcher who didn’t pick up the phone for another 15 minutes. He had utilized a service and he was being made later through attempting to pay for the service. Everything about the situation was ass-backwards and it was infuriating.

“Melinda, look. I take no beef with you.” She grunts into the phone in disbelief. “What I have a problem with is this fucked up system where I, a paying, long-time customer, am being punished for calls I did not make, from places I did not visit, from a phone I no longer had in my possession. It makes no sense whatsoever and to top it all off, from the beginning you have treated me like I was a criminal and threatened to send me to collections. On what grounds?”

He hears the squeaking of her chair over the receiver. He imagines her leaning forward now, bracing her engorged elbows on the corners of the plastic-coated, adjustable desk.

“Sir, I work for the phone company. I do not need grounds. I am not being listened to, nor monitored. My supervisor is my husband, his supervisor is his cousin. We are based in a small town filled with small-minded people who know the few blocks of this town but know them well. We have no need for big-city folk calling in as though they own the place, as if simply because we are a business, that gives you license to call in hopping mad over a missing telephone. Why, if the fact that you are missin’ a telephone has you so upset, we have plenty of those for affordable prices. May I interest you in a new phone?”

He felt like he was in the twilight zone. All rational people had been rounded up like cattle, shoved into trucks, slaughtered and ground up into hamburger meat and eaten by the small town calling center folks down on Main Street USA. Melinda puts a stick of gum in her mouth and starts chewing like a cow over the phone. The smacking grates on his nerves, crawls down his spine, sticks needles into his skin, punches him in the gut.

“HAVE YOU LISTENED TO NOTHING I HAVE SAID?! WHERE DO YOU COME FROM? WHAT PLANET MUST I DAMN FOR SENDING YOU MY WAY!”

He regains composure. “Melinda. I don’t want a new phone. All I called about was…you know what? Let me speak to your supervisor.”

“His name is Roger. He’s my husband.” Her sentences lift at the ends in sickening sweetness.

“Melinda, I do not care who he is. I do not care what his name is. Just get off the phone and let me speak to someone that has half a brain.”

He is breathing heavily now, feels his blood pressure rising, his temples pounding, remembers what the doctors said: breathe slowly, take a break, don’t get too wrapped up in a situation.

“But he’s my husband. A great salesman and knows a ton about phones. He can get you whatever phone you want, you know? But he’s busy right now and can’t talk. Sir, what else can I do for you?”

He shrieks into the phone, slams the receiver into the tabletop again and again. The inanity of the situation embroils him in a sweeping mist of hysterical anger and he curls up on the wooden floor in a fetal position, thumb in mouth, blanket in hand.

Neither easy or comfortable – Kate Webster –
I was disappointed in this bra. It is not so easy to line up the horizontal velcro pieces and like most velcro, little sharp pieces of it stick your skin. I had to stuff a washcloth under the velcro closure to be able to tolerate it.
In addition, the bra is stiched together with plasticky thread that pricks along the seams.
Not wearable for me.

You might have got the impression that I’m a fan of velcro in this project. I like what it off

You might have got the impression that I’m a fan of velcro in this project. I like what it offers as a material, and I like the playful nature of the ripping noise it makes, as well as the fact that varying the speed of removal simply makes more noise – a quick rip is louder, while trying to do it gently just makes the noise more prolonged.

However, I’m not blind to its flaws – it eats fluff, which degrades the quality of the velcro over time, and in relation to the previous concepts, could prove to be a problem. Also, at the price offered by a local craft store, it doesn’t seem particularly viable in cost terms.

As a result, I decided to take a careful look at whether or not the material is suitable to design with. First off, I looked at the price. Unable to extract information on the trade price of velcro from the shop, a look online reveals that it can be obtained considerably cheaper, especially when you factor in bulk buying:

1m of hook strip & 1m of loop strip, 50mm wide, self-adhesive

Retail price – £7.00 per metre
Bulk price – £1.10 per metre

Clearly, cost is not as much of an issue as initially expected. The retail markup is very high, and any mainstream production of the item would not utilise materials bought at retail price.

Secondly, I looked into the life-expectancy of hook & loop fastening (the generic name for Velcro). While it was difficult to find a reliable source, an article in Popular Science from July 1978 states that “Nylon fasteners have a cycle life of 10,000 openings and closings”. If an item’s enclosure is used 10 times a day, then the individual velcro piece will still last for just under three years, which isn’t unreasonable, given the low cost of replacement material.

The final issue is the fluff problem, and that can’t really be explained away – the hook side is very bad for attracting thread, hair, and anything else that happens to be blowing around. So, the only way to avoid that is to prevent the material – specifically the hook side – being exposed to dirty environments… can this be done?

I am still looking at the dispensing idea, but in the meantime, I got hold of some Velcro and decide

I am still looking at the dispensing idea, but in the meantime, I got hold of some Velcro and decided to have a shot at mocking up one of my ideas to see how it performed. The model below is made of paper and Velcro strip, giving a rough idea of the concept.

The velcro is double-sided, so when the can is rolled up in the ‘blanket’, the surfaces bond together and hold the can tightly. Multiple units can be stored vertically above and below, with the idea being that only one item of each variety (colour, for example), is accessible to the customer.

The can protrudes from the end of the blanket, making it simple for the customer to quickly identify what colour of paint is which. However, the blanket obscures other data about coverage, ingredients or similar, so there is a need to allow access to this information, preferably without the need to remove the can.

So, given the product is wrapped in a re-usable adhesive surface, I decided to try the idea of removable tags. This means the display unit doesn’t have to be used specifically for one brand, one product, or one specific range of colours, but can be adapted to whatever is in it. In the example above, the label shows colour and info for the customer about obtaining more of the product, but the tab could encompass any information at all.

On asking one of my coursemates to have a try, it became apparent that the method of removal isn’t at all obvious – the product looks fixed aside from the clamps at the top.

Using a simple labelled pull tab, the customer is alerted to the method for releasing the product, which pulls the Velcro open, and allows the simple removal of the item from the display. The display then leaves a visible tab, showing the retailer what product needs to be replaced, and also indicates to the customer the missing item, should they wish to purchase one.

There are a few issues with this concept:

You can slide the can out sideways – Fairly obviously, the can is able to be removed by sliding it out sideways from the display. This circumvents the noise-producing aspect of the display, making it useless.

Re-stocking is difficult - In order to make sure the display functions correctly, it is necessary to tightly fasten the velcro around the item; it is fiddly to do this.

However, I’m already thinking about these, and am confident they can be overcome. With the deadline looming, I’m keen to pick a definitive solution, so keep reading for more updates, as and when they happen.

Being able to rent trade show displays isn’t anything new, because for as long as trade show

Being able to rent trade show displays isn’t anything new, because for as long as trade show displays have been around there has always been somebody that was more than willing to rent you a booth rather than sell it to you; especially if you rent it over and over again. In the trade show decorating business, the old adage was always; “why sell something to an exhibitor when you can rent it to him over and over?” The feeling was that you’d have to be crazy to do that. This is why G.E.S., Freeman, Champion, and all the other contractors will never sell anything more complicated than Velcro to an exhibitor; which has been a business model that has successfully and I might also add profitably, stood the test of time.

What ingredients make for a perfect rental display? Unfortunately, display rentals over the years have for the most part looked like a “rental” display, and not may other thing in the business world make you look like an ordinary member of the pack as quickly as having a booth that looks rented. Then, how do you escape the stigma of having a rented display when that is the only thing you can do due to circumstances or budget?

Begin by finding a rental trade show display that is primary a graphic and not a hardware package. After all, it’s the hardware package that when it’s seen over and over again, that pretty soon gets etched in the minds of show goers and begins labeling your company’s identities as “one of those rental booths.” However, if what’s noticed first about the booth is spectacular dye sublimation images and perhaps good product demonstration, then the hardware melts into the background and the exhibitor’s overall message stands out rather than metal and laminate.

Now what I just wrote is only going to work with an effective graphic package. That’s when you find somebody who’s educated and trained in graphic design and knows what works and what doesn’t . You have to assume that you as president of the company really don’t know what you’re talking about when it comes to trade show graphics and therefore have to put your ego aside and do it right the first time. After all, your company’s fortunes and future might depend upon it.
