Scott Weiland, best known for his lead rolls in Stone Temple Pilots and Velvet Revolver, is also an accomplished solo artist. His second album, “Happy” In Galoshes, was released about this time last year, but was shelved, promotionally speaking, as he rejoined his STP cohorts for some good old world domination. Now the ship is sailing again as Weiland releases the third single from his second solo album.

Reaction to “Tangle With Your Mind” was mostly positive, though there were some detractors, for sure. Dillon called in and said he didn’t care for the song at all. Conversely, Alex said, “Great song, man. Keep playing it.” Natalie sent a text that read, “it wasnt horrible but i didnt love it either.” One anonymous text said, “THIS is Scott Weiland? Would never have guessed. Not bad, but sounds suspiciously like Matchbox 20.” Other texts included, “Like it.” “Thumbs up” and “good!” Meredith gave some twitter feedback saying, “Fine, OK, might grow on me. Reminds me of Tom Petty, but [Weiland]’s a better singer.”

If you missed today’s Spotlight, you can hear the song on Weiland’s MySpace page. You can also find Weiland on Facebook, Twitter and his official website.

What do you think of the song?

Metal Odyssey hereby bellows, with Heavy Metal enthusiasm, a Happy Metal Birthday to Matt Sorum! 49

Metal Odyssey hereby bellows, with Heavy Metal enthusiasm, a Happy Metal Birthday to Matt Sorum! 49 years on planet Earth has Matt Sorum been, arriving on November 19, 1960. Matt Sorum is the drummer for Velvet Revolver and former drummer for Guns N’ Roses and The Cult. (These are the most famous bands that Matt Sorum has been drummer for). A Heavy Metal milestone for Matt Sorum happened this Fall of 2009, where he filled in as the drummer for the ultra legendary Motorhead. (Mikkey Dee of Motorhead took a leave of absence to be on a reality television show, some sort of survivor type show).

Man, if there ever was a sharp dressed man, Matt Sorum has the knack for looking sharp. ZZ Top must have wrote Sharp Dressed Man with Matt Sorum in mind. Matt Sorum has his own clothing line too, if I had the extra loot I would be buying his stuff and strutting the look. Oh well, I guess the $12 jeans from Walmart will suffice me for now. Matt Sorum teamed up with renowned fashion designer Max Noce and launched the Sorum Noce Clothing Line this past March of 2009.

As for Matt Sorum on drums, what can I say? This guy is real good. C’mon, the three bands he has been drummer for are no slouches within the world of Heavy Metal. To have been the drummer for those three bands of their status, man, that basically says it all. Plus, once Velvet Revolver makes a return, (with a new lead singer of course), Matt Sorum will be manning the skins and continuing his Hard Rock/Heavy Metal legacy. As I read a quote from Lemmy Kilmister, (vocalist & bass guitarist of Motorhead), recently, he referred to Matt Sorum as a professional. ‘Nuff said.

Having a rought day? Feel like even your mother hates you right now? Well she might but here are some jams to help you cope with the blues.

The Zutons: Why Don’t You Give Me Love – I still haven’t figured out how they didn’t get bigger but the Zutons are a star that shines brightly. This song is relentless in groove and will have you up and dancing even if you’re in the office. They’ve made a splash overseas, and while their last CD was a bust – don’t be surprised if you hear a lot more of this band in the future.

Velvet Revolver: Let It Roll – Alright, it didn’t last long and not everyone was a big fan of this supergroup. I disagreed with its critics and thought Weiland’s vocals were a perfect complement to the music. Their second album wasn’t as strong as the first but this was one of a handful of great rock songs. I don’t care why they broke up or whose fault it is – I’m just glad they left some damn good rock and roll behind

U2 & Green Day: The Saints Are Coming (Live) – The studio version of this song is crap. The live version has an unparalleled energy to it. It’s not overproduced like the other recording and the crowd adds a huge dimension to it. You’ll have goosebumps.

Talking Heads: Blind – I think every girl I met in college hates this song because I used to sing it in my car all the time [My friend Travis can attest to this]. Doesn’t mean it’s not a classic. If you love the band or not this song belongs in your collection. They’re in the Rock ‘n Roll Hall Of Fame for a reason and this is a great example of that reason.

Red Hot Chili Peppers: Storm In A Teacup - If you’re one of the nay-sayers who claim the Chili Peppers have lost their soul, you need to check this song out. It’s off Stadium Arcadium, one of their best works, and it really has that raw attitude to it that makes the Chili Peppers so unique. If you haven’t gotten the double disc I recommend going out to the store now.

Thirteen things I hate… Today…

13. BMW drivers – Think they own the world because they drive a BMW. I was always told that Mercedes drivers represent old money and BMW driver’s new money. So I am coming to the conclusion that new money means having to show people you have money and that equates to buying / leasing a beemer and driving like you don’t give a shit about anyone else on the road. I must honk 2 of them a day for not signaling or cutting people off. Assholes.

12. My office keyboard. Stupid thing got wet (something to do with me spilling water on it) and now when I type capital letters the Ucking thing drops the first letter and capitalizes the next one…

11. Swine flu / H1N1 / influenza panic… Good g-d, people are going to make themselves sick worrying about the damn vaccination.

10. The NY Yankees. They won the world series last night and, well, see my post on them on my sports blog; www.daddyknowssports.wordpress.com.

9. Our former nanny. Left us a couple weeks ago and has been texting me asking for more money – extra money that she thinks she is entitled to, but confusing with vacation pay which she received way more than she was entitled to. She thinks she was given extra pay our of the kindness of our hearts, I told her it was but there aint no more. Now she’s bitching about calling the labour department. I called first and we’re good. She’s a noob.

8. My Achilles. I finally stretched a lot and went for a run to test it out. Ran for 10 minutes and there was no pain, but it felt really weak, like any sudden movement would cause it to hurt. I hate that. I need to run to stay healthy.

7. My weight. I blame it on Halloween that I am forced to eat those fucking little chocolate bars like they are going out of style. Because they are small does not allow me to eat 10 of them at once, right? OR does it…

6. Fair-weather friends. Either you’re my friend and you want to hang out, or we’re not and that’s fine, but don’t string me along by being phony and they never come out. I can’t waste time on this whole being social thing… After planning a few outings, if it’s not reciprocated, I’m done with you.

5. Jedi vs. Sith on Facebook. I’m fucking addicted! Grrrr. As of last night I was 78th in the world. 14 million players have this application. I have 4100 points (3 points for a win, lose 1 for a loss) and the leader has 40,000.

4. Hulk Hogan signing with TNA wrestling. It’s a shitty promotion that might have potential if they cut the gimmicks and produced a decent show. Crappy writing and even crappier plots make me wonder why this show exists. Besides the fact that I hate the name “TNA” since it is too close to “Tits ‘n’ Ass” but Total Non-stop Action is not the name for a successful wrestling organization. And Hogan… 56 years old. Seriously.

3. My choice of area for trick-or-treating this year. Sucks ass. I expected the $2 million dollar home owners to kick out some kick-ass treats for the kids. But one candy-bar per houses?!? Cheapskates! How disappointing. Not making that mistake again!

2. Guns and Roses. I’m still pissed at them for their simply horrible release this year. I kind of wish they had released a bunch of stuff throughout the past decade so the shit they put on this album might have come out in other releases. There is no good hard rock nowadays and as I listen to a few of their songs on my iPod It makes me even more pissed off. They used to be great. Same for Stone Temple Pilots and Velvet Revolver. Where is the new Saliva, Disturbed and Rob Zombie?

1. Iran. Saw this news story and it pisses me off, considering Iran claims to be doing nothing wrong. Ever.

The seizure of a massive shipment of Iranian arms bound for terrorist organization Hizbollah, proves the arms flow to Syria and south Lebanon from Iran. The attempt to smuggle arms to Syria and Hizbullah was an Iranian violation of a UN Security Council resolution. Typically, Iran continues to smuggle arms to terrorists under the guise of legitimate international commerce, turning the Mediterranean Sea into a platform for illegal action.

The weapons seizure “unequivocally and without a doubt” proves the Iran-Syria-south Lebanon weapons-trafficking route.

The ship was released overnight Wednesday after 36 weapons-filled containers were unloaded, and the 12 crew members boarded the vessel and made their way back on their planned route.

Hundreds of tons of weaponry, the largest arms seizure in Israel’s history, were intercepted in the daring raid by Israeli naval commandos aboard the cargo ship sailing 100 nautical miles west of Israel.

The arms shipment was 10 times the size of the cache found on the Palestinian arms ship Karine A in 2002, defense officials said.

The different types of arms offloaded from the ship were familiar to Israel as those Hizbullah already possesses in its arsenal, Israel Radio quoted defense officials as saying.

Military sources assessed Teheran would be forced to change its smuggling routes following the Israel Navy’s successful operation.

The cache was hidden inside shipping containers belonging to the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines (IRISL) which departed from the Bandar Abbas Port in Iran some 10 days ago, were unloaded in the Egyptian port of Damietta and then loaded onto the Francop, a German vessel flying an Antiguan flag.

On Wednesday, Israeli PM, Netanyahu addressed the international community concerning Iran’s material support for terrorist organizations by saying, “Iran is sending these weapons to terror organizations to harm Israeli cities and kill its citizens. The time has come for the international community to exert real pressure on Iran to stop this criminal activity and to support Israel when it defends itself against these terrorists and their patrons.”

This is going to be a tough task considering the axis of evil lined up to denounce Israel left, right and centre every time something happens in the middle east.

I’m a music junky, but I’m not a fanatic fan of any band. That being said I do know of and enjoy listening to Stone Temple Pilots and Velvet Revolver, but I know nothing of the people. So after reading Fall To Pieces by Mary Weiland (Scott Weiland’s soon to be ex-wife) I was surprised to find how angry some fans were about this book.

Fall To Pieces is an easy flowing memoir of Mary’s life: from poor, to big time model at 16, to rock star girl friend/wife, to drug addict, to mentally ill and to being a mother. Her writing style is effortless, it’s like a confession that you get at a sleep over party or what you write in your diary. She’s funny and frank – and while she has the chance to bad mouth a lot of people, or make herself into a victim, she doesn’t. In fact it almost makes you wonder what she’s not telling. I mean, come on, this is the era of constant celebrity feuds.

Yet never once does she blame anyone for her mistakes or her actions. What I read from STP/VR fan message boards is they were thinking she was going to slam Scott Weiland. She doesn’t, if anything it’s her saying she loves him but in the end she had to get healthy for herself. That meant not only staying clean but controlling her bipolar disorder while being a good mom.

I really enjoyed this book over all. Sure I kind of wish there was a bit more substance here or there, but she admits herself there’s a lot she doesn’t remember thanks to the drugs and alcohol. Also while I might have wished there was more, I couldn’t put down what I did have. So if you’re in the mood for a quick memoir go check out Fall To Pieces.

October 27th sees the 30th anniversary of Motorhead’s Bomber. released in 1979, featuring classic tracks such as Stone Dead Forever, Dead Men Tell No Tales & Bomber.

The album was produced by Jimmy Miller, who was a heroin addict, this could have possibly influenced the song Dead Men Tell No Tales, as it is Motorhead’s first anti heroin song.

Also on this day, both Scott Weiland (1967) (Stone Temple Pilots, Ex- Velvet Revolver) & K.K Downing (1951) (Judas Priest) were born.

originally printed in the Trenton Times… BY BRENT JOHNSON Slash has made a fine living off of

originally printed in the Trenton Times…

BY BRENT JOHNSON

Slash has made a fine living off of playing a real guitar. But how
does he fare with a fake one?

Like millions of others, he got hooked on Guitar Hero.

“I got addicted enough to the point where I actually beat the game,”
the Velvet Revolver and ex-Guns N’ Roses guitarist says of the
insanely popular six-string simulation. “But I beat the game on medium
— I didn’t make it to expert.”

Then, he got a call from his manager and actually became part of Guitar Hero III. Beat a virtual Slash at playing “Welcome To The
Jungle,” and you beat the game.

I know what dude I am. I'm the dude playin' the dude, disguised as another dude!

Which begs the question: Can Slash defeat himself?

“I just actually played it for the first time last night,” he says,
laughing with slight embarrassment. “I’m terrible. I have to get
reaccelerated to it because I’ve been playing on tour, playing real
guitar for the last seven or eight months.”

At this rate, becoming an expert might take a while. Velvet Revolver
is set for an upcoming two-month tour of Australia and Great Britain,
and they’ll prep for it Dec. 29 by playing the Sovereign Band Arena in
Trenton.

International gigs haven’t gone smoothly of late for VR, the
marquee-name rock group Slash formed with ex-Stone Temple Pilots lead singer Scott Weiland, ex-Wasted Youth guitarist Dave Kushner and
fellow Guns N’ Roses alums Duff McKagan (bass) and Matt Sorum (drums).

Kiss & Tell: Slash talks Weiland, Axl and more in this piece

The band was supposed to tour Japan last month, but had to cancel
after their visas were denied, reportedly because of the band members’
criminal histories. Slash says they’re contesting the decision.

“We haven’t done anything since the last time we were there,” he
protests via phone from his Los Angeles home. “You know what I mean?
It’s not like someone got busted for possession or f**king being with
underage girls. Nothing’s happened.

“I attribute it to some s**t being on the Internet that’s false.
People always get their information from the Internet, and I would
imagine whoever it is in Japan probably would have gotten
misinformation.”

The conclusion? “It’s one of those things that goes with the territory
of this band.”

Apparently. Revolver has a reputation for being a reckless band of
rockers keen on booze, drugs and an unlawful lifestyle.

Take Slash’s answer when asked whether people call him by his stage or given name, Saul Hudson: “Everybody calls me Slash,” he says, “except for the police. Even then, once they figure out who it is, they call me Slash, too.”

Or how Weiland — known for his in-and-out-of-rehab heroine habit — was recently charged with a DUI.

“I don’t know about other bands, but for this band in particular, I
guess you know in some ways we deserve,” Slash said when asked about if it’s fair the band is tagged with the reputation. “The only thing
that’s frustrating about it is that people spend so much time dwelling
on it. All you have to do is make a good record, put it out do the
tour and that’s all anybody should really care about.”

Their most recent album, Libertad — the band’s second disc — was a confirmation for VR. They recorded their debut alum, 2004’s chart-topping Contraband, amidst strained conditions: Weiland was on probation and allotted only three hours a day to record. And some saw the band — anchored by Weiland’s throaty vocals and Slash’s slithery riffs — as a temporary supergroup.

“All the tags, all the labels that were put on us from the inception
were just that: labels that were put on us,” Slash says. “It had
nothing to do with where the band was coming from. The band was coming from a completely more sort of band-oriented, organic place. Which was just a bunch of musicians — albeit sort of high-profile musicians, I guess — but still coming from the same frame of mind of any sort of garage band.”

But the second time around, he says, Revolver felt more like a unit.
The atmosphere was more relaxed and organized. And now, Slash says
they’re getting ready to start a third album, hopefully when they’re
done touring around the summer.

“I’m sure people are already gearing up to say they’ll never do it,”
the top-hatted, curly-locked fretter laments. “… I know it’s going to
be a great record because this band is moving progressively in a
forward motion, evolving and getting better with what we’re doing.”
Of course, then there’s also the issue of the members’ past musical
lives. Especially the ever-present questions surrounding Guns N’
Roses: Whether the long-in-limbo Chinese Democracy will ever hit shelves. Whether Slash or Duff still talk with Axl.
Slash says he gets asked at least three times a day whether the band
that defined late-’80s rock will ever reunite. That’s part of the
reason, he says, he penned his recent autobiography, Slash: to clear
some of the GNR rumors.

For the record, Slash said no one is “exercising” the idea of a reunion.
“It’s just something we don’t really discuss in any kind of detail,
because it’s just not something that’s interesting to any of the
original members,” explains Slash, who has been out of GNR for 12
years. “Nobody’s like sitting around going, ‘Oh, you know it would be
great to put the band back together.’ It really hasn’t been a topic of
conversation.”

But he understands why people ask. Really, he does.

“I think if the band could pull it together to do a small tour or
something like that, I think it would be great for the fans,” says
Slash, who often plays GNR songs — and Stone Temple Pilot songs — in
concert with Revolver. “I think it would be a huge thing to give back
to those people.

“It’s just that the circumstances that it would take for everybody to
get together in order to do that, if it was that easy, we would never
have broken up in the first place.”

Plus, he’s got a tour to worry about. And Guitar Hero waiting when it’s done.
