40 Year "Live" Anniversary Tour Anyone?

Beck y sus amiguetes Devendra Banhart, MGMT y Andrew Stockdale de Wolfmother, participan de la segunda entrega de Record Club, proyectó que inició el músico norteamericano en 2008. La idea: versionar temas de grandes bandas, con colaboraciones de otros músicos (de ahí la presencia de estos invitados de lujo), todo sólo en un día. De estas sesiones relámpago se filmaron videos, y audio.

La primera entrega tuvo a su cargo las versiones de Velvet Underground and Nico. Salió normal. Ahora, con Songs of Leonard Cohen, segundo experimento del Record Club, realmente dieron en el clavo.

El disco ya está disponible para su descarga y se pueden ver los videos de los covers en la página de Beck, y, por supuesto, en YouTube, madre de todo lo audiovisual. Y es más: la primera entrega del tercer encuentro de Record Club (Beck más nombres como Wilco y Feist reversionando el disco de Spike Spencer, Oar) salió el 12 de este mes.

Asla David Bowie ve orijinali gibi olamaz tabii… Ama yine Kuzey’in yine naif seslerinden Anna Ternheim’ın China Girl yorumu fena değil. Pek yorum diyesim gelmiyor aslında, çünkü orijinaliyle gerçekten bağımsız sayılabilir. O yüzden bunu bir versiyonmuş gibi değil de bambaşka bir Anna Ternheim parçasıymış gibi dinleyince güzel oluyor…

CAT POWER – I Found A Reason (Velvet Underground)

Velvet Underground parçası I Found A Reason’ın sert bir parça olduğu zaten söylenemez. O yüzden yumuşak versiyonu demiyelim de, kadın vokal versiyonu diyelim ve cover kraliçelerinden Cat Power’dan dinleyelim: “Oh i do believe, in all the things you say, what comes is better than what came before…” Güzel, derin sesli kadın…

IMOGEN HEAP – Hallelujah

Bu da ninni kıvamında bir klasik zaten. Özellikle bir Jeff Buckley’den, bir Rufus Wainrightan dinleyince… Her birinde tadı ayrı güzel parçayı bir de boğuk sesli İngiliz kadın Imogen Heap’ten dinlemek lazım. Bu versiyon sanırım OC’nin 3. sezon finalinde duyulmuş…

I HATE…

1. Trying on clothes in one size, and having them either be too farkin’ small or too farkin’ big, and when they’re small… not willing to go up a size.
2. Having a good day, and the very next, it turns into a shitty one.
3. Only thinking I look good in the morning, because I haven’t eaten anything yet to “ruin” my appearance.
4. Plotting, scheming, planning… whatever you want to call it… and randomly considering the perfect timing to fall back into my old habits.
5. That my brother has to be obvious that eating at a diner, or restaurant, or indulging in something won’t make me fat. And he’s right.
6. Feeling so unfulfilled and having no goals for the future.
7. The cold weather, for making me feel so fat with all the layers I have to wear.

BUT I LOVE…

1. Despite everything, I can still identify my good traits.
2. Having friends, my kitties, and my family support me.
3. My hair. it’sfantasticallyawesome.
4. My quirkiness. It’s wonderful to be odd.
5. My ability to help people with their problems. When you help someone, it brings you closer to them. It creates a certain bond.
6. My taste in music. Music, I believe, saved me. The Beatles, the Velvet Underground, the Who, David Bowie, Led Zeppelin, the Kinks, and because I am a “friggin’ kid, for godsakes” Lady Gaga.
7. My eyes. They’re brown, but they’re wonderful. One opens wider than the other and, heh, I used to think in a certain light my eyes looked like David Bowie’s.
8. Eating. ED can’t make me feel guilty when I eat a sweet bowl of ice cream, or a fulfilling bowl of cereal, or – God forbid! – a slice of pumpkin pie.
9. Growing up. But not having to act it.
10. Being able to accept having breasts again.
11. Dancing without having to sit out or with not as much energy.
12. Being told I am pretty, cute, beautiful, adorable… that helps me so much. Because I’ll believe it.
13. Being “smart.” Most of my grade got a C or below in physics. Guess who got an A?
14. Living, because I wouldn’t be here without it.

As you can see… the second list is twice the size as the first, and it shows despite all the negativity I still have for myself, I can produce twice the amount of positive facts. I made this list feeling bad about my body, but with the making of the second list, I feel loads better. I encourage all of you to do the same: write out what you hate about yourself, and then make a longer list of the things you love about yourself. We can’t fool ourselves into believing we can destroy the first list, but at least we can turn our focus to the things we are willing to accept. Because when you compare the lists, it’s quite obvious which one matters more and makes the most sense.

Entre os que atribuem ao Velvet Underground o título de banda seminal, apenas uma minoria consegue citar exemplos de influenciados para confirmar o que dizem. É o efeito Mate-me Por Favor, responsável por fazer muita gente acreditar ser possível sintetizar a importância do VU em 443 páginas.  Encartada na última edição da Uncut, a coletânea The Velvets Revolution – 15 Bands Inspired By The Velvet Underground pode ajudar essas pessoas a entender o legado dos novaiorquinos. Não se trata de um tributo convencional, desses com regravações; mas de uma pequena amostra da difusa e duradoura a influência do grupo para o rock alternativo.

Na virada para os anos 80, as bandas americanas Feelies e Suicide representaram bem o quanto a água de uma mesma fonte pode causar diferentes efeitos colaterais – jangle pop e no wave, respectivamente. Do outro lado Atlântico, ainda nos anos 80, os extremos vão do proto-indie-pop do Orange Juice ao kraut-shoegaze do Loop. Smog, numa faixa bem Lou Reed, e Hope Sandoval, emulando a Nico, são os nomes mais conhecidos dos anos 90. Entre os filhotes nascidos nesta década, estão o Thee Oh Sees e as Vivian Girls, ambos já devidamente elogiados em posts anteriores. Sobram ainda mais sete artistas que eu desconheço, mas que também fizeram ótimas canções sob influência de Lou Reed e Cia.

Ah, dimenticavo, c’è anche Gigi D’Alessio, un cantante forse amato dalle vostre cugine o parenti (prima di tutto immaginatevi quanto l’ho dimenticato ed, in secondo luogo, spero di sbagliarmi, ma sono quasi sicuro che sarà così…). Qui D’Alessio canterà «Non riattaccare» da 6 come sei e poi ci saranno ovviamente le canzoni e Claudia Gerini. Ed a proposito della Gerini, chissà come sono le colonne sonore dei suoi film…

Quanto ai brani, saranno per Silver «Sunday Morning» dei Velvet Underground ed «Un piccolo aiuto» di Zucchero, pezzo che non conosco. Per Marco «Black in Black» degli Ac/Dc e «Senza fine» di Gino Paoli. Per Giuliano «Stand By Me» di B. B. King e «Quando» di Pino Daniele e per le Yavanna «Meravigliosa creatura» di Gianna Nannini ed «Orinoco Flow» di Enya. Una domanda, infine. Votereste queste canzoni più sotto per il mio blog? 07.10.09 Marco Carta ospite sabato dieci ottobre di Playlist di All Music intorno alle 21.30. Buona visione… Su un’altra televisione musicale c’è Yo! dall’una alle due di notte che sarebbe dedicato all’r&b, al rap, all’hip hop ed al groove, Party Zone dalle due alle quattro (musica da discoteca?) e Chill Out Zone fino alle sei del mattino.

Domenica significa, invece, la Euro Top 20, la classifica dei venti brani più venduti in Europa, da mezzogiorno alle 13.30  ed i 10 Of The Best di Tiziano Ferro (peccato che abbia fatto sponsorizzare il suo tour da un’industria elettrica…) intorno alle sei del pomeriggio; Hitlist Italia all’incirca un’ora dopo; World Stage con il gruppo di qualche giorno prima (vedere sotto) ed il Superock dall’una di notte.

J-Ax ed i Depeche Mode. 04.10.09 – Dolcenera, Ben Harper e… Quali i programmi “musicali” di venerdì nove ottobre? Fra tutti i programmi – “musicali” e non – vi consiglierei soprattutto Blu notte su Raitre alle 21.10 sulle navi scoperte sulle coste italiane con rifiuti tossici o radioattivi e su Rai4 il telefilm Battlestar Galactica che, intorno alle 21.45, si occupa anch’esso – a modo suo, narrativo, – di minaccia nucleare. Nel primo caso con il conduttore Carlo Lucarelli. Su All Music Playlist dalle nove di sera con Dolcenera, già vista su Sat2000, e poi Mono su Ben Harper dalle dieci di sera.

Baglioni e Venuti. Musica anche ad I migliori anni di Raiuno dalle 21.10, ma posso scrivervi ben poco sui cantanti. Peccato… Goran Kuzminac, I ricchi e poveri, Gerardina Trovato, i Tavares con «More Than a Woman» e poi… chissà. Ah, ci sono Claudio Baglioni ed  il cantante catanese Mario Venuti a Niente di personale di una televisione nazionale, in onda dalle 21.10. Una domanda, inoltre: chi sono i Rammstein, protagonisti intorno alle undici di sera del World Stage di un canale musicale?

16.11.08 Si concludono oggi gli Slany Jazz Days – musica jazz, blues, spiritual e gospel – in una cittadina (Slany appunto) della Repubblica Ceca, con il gruppo The Swings dalle 10.30 alle 12. Alle 17 concerto di chiusura per il Blues Alive di Sumperk, sempre in Repubblica ceca. L’esibizione comprende Limbo, Kulturní úderka, la Curtis Salgado Band e Wanda Johnson insieme alla Shrimp City Slim Blues Band. Suoneranno al Culture Centre Batory Chorzow per questo festival di folk, blues e probabilmente altra musica.

We know. It’s been awhile since KillerPOP Records has released any new jams, but would you rather we pump something out every week, or meditate on it a bit so we can put out something substantial every once and awhile? Todos em volta de assuntos musicados, com a publicação de The Velvet Underground: New York Art, uma nova biografia da banda, como pretexto. Vai acontecer a 8 de Dezembro em Nova Iorque, na Biblioteca da cidade. E nós a querermos ver tudo isto.

For those of you that stayed away from the madness of the Fringe, site-specific theatre was everywhere. Literally. From a one-on-one bedroom speed dating encounter at The Point in Ontroerend Goed’s Internal; getting drunk in The Barony with Grid Iron in Barflies; to Mark Watson’s The Hotel in a purpose-built venue on Queen Street, interactive productions, based within their surroundings were big news.

But this wasn’t just happening up town. Pauline Lockhart and Jenny Ryan, actresses and Leithers, brought their own brand of site-specific work to the corner of Ferry Road. Venus n Furs, the company they formed just a few months ago, gave two performances of the latest version of their devised work, The Violet Hour. Set just behind Leith Library and Registry Office, in and around the impressive curved art deco loggia of the now sadly disused Leith Theatre.

“I live in the area and was keen to base the piece here,” says Pauline Lockhart. “I’ve always found Leith Library fascinating because it seems out of place from the surroundings.” What is equally striking is how secluded and quiet the site is. As the audience followed the action of The Violet Hour on foot, between the theatre’s heavy stone columns, the noise from the road seemed to fade away.

But this could just be because of the play. We are told the story of one man’s relationship with two very different women, his devoted wife and a Velvet Underground-esque ‘whiplash girlchild’ such as the company name promises. The script, which was devised by the company, is inspired by its surroundings and makes direct and deliberate references to its location. We begin our journey at the registry office and follow the actors past a parked car and through an overgrown garden to the library. On paper these settings might seem disparate, but the situations in which the characters find themselves are held together by the compact nature of the space.

Without a strong storyline, site-specific productions can seem slaves to their locations, superficial and gimmicky. Not so for The Violet Hour. The novelty associated with an outdoor, promenade production and the beauty of its location has been embraced without standing in the way of presenting characters that demand their audience’s engagement and consideration, and this is to the company’s credit. What makes this production strong is the sense that the narrative could, with some slight tweaking, take place almost anywhere.

Despite sounding all highbrow, the decision to stage a site-specific piece was not simply based on a bunch of actors being arty-farty:
“It had a bit to do with the credit crunch,” says Lockhart. “Actors are looking for work like everyone else and this format was accessible and relatively cheap to produce.”

However, creating theatre yourself comes with new responsibilities in terms of who’s going to pay for it:
“This is a new thing for us – we have to worry about funding for the first time ever. Usually as an actor you take a job and somebody else deals with the funding.”

But fortunately for Venus n Furs, things are looking promising on that score. The Arts Council has already got wind of the project, and funding for further development could be in the offing.

But for now, after just thirty minutes, The Violet Hour is up. This is still a work in progress but, if current form is anything to go by, this could become an impressive piece of dramatic storytelling, which is uniquely ‘Leith’. Word has it our local MSP is a fan, and, with support mounting for the refurbishment and reopening of Leith Theatre, perhaps Venus n Furs are the people to bring this building to life both inside and out.

I am a big fan of Beck and pretty much all the music he makes.  I’ve been listening to him since I was in high school, and when I went to Bonnaroo in 2006 I had the pleasure of getting to see him perform live (one of the best overall performances at the whole music festival.  Probably second only to Radiohead).  Along with listening to his latest album, “Modern Guilt” I’ve also been replaying old classics like “Odelay.”  Beyond that though I am very pleased to discover Beck’s Record Club.

Basically Beck has been partnering with a bunch of other artists to record full covers of various albums by other musicians.  The list of artists contributing to this effort is fantastic and includes the likes of Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy, Leslie Fiest, Devendra Banhart, amongst many others.  The albums covered so far have included works by The Velvet Underground, Leonard Cohen, and Skip Spence.  Really it is fantastic stuff.

Personally I think that Beck is one of the most creative musicians out there right now.  He has been around for a long time and still continues to make some really original and awesome music.  Even his covers have a sense of newness in all their familiarity.  Check out his Record Club, it is very cool stuff.

Saranno Giuliano Rassu, Marco Mengoni e le Yavanna a giocarsi la vittoria ad X Factor 3 ed il posto a Sanremo. Esce Silvio Barbieri da Treviglio detto Silver, 24 anni, dopo aver dimenticato per due settimane di fila il testo delle canzoni e dopo che gli hanno dato da cantare un inedito scialbo anzi che no (si veda sotto). Morgan batte Sony 2-0: ha demolito i pezzi inediti assegnati dallo staff (stavolta i capitani non c’entrano, nella scelta) ai suoi due cantanti ed ha pienamente ragione, sotto ne spieghiamo il perchè.

Si è lamentato che non lo fanno intervenire sugli inediti, gli rispondono che quando l’ha fatto (nella prima edizione) venne fuori l’allucinante “Chi” degli Aram Quartet, comunque vincitori.  Di sicuro, hanno dato il pezzo più debole al cantante più debole. Che infatti è uscito. Hanno dato il pezzo migliore all’unico avversario di Marco, che comunque vincerà perchè basta la sua voce. Probabile podio di consolazione alle Yavanna, con un pezzo medio con assonanze già note. Facciamo una scommessa? Nessuno di questi pezzi sfonderà. “Impossibile” di Becucci dell’anno scorso è una spanna e mezzo sopra tutti, per dire.

Passiamo  alle esecuzioni delle cover della semifinale. Tutti pezzi di alto livello, con Mara Maionchi che ha sparato altissimo assegnando addirittura Enya. Morgan punta su AC/DC e Velvet Underground. Più scontate le scelte di Claudia Mori. Cliccando sui titoli trovate gli originali dei pezzi meno noti (o meglio, di quelli i quali i titoli non vi dicono nulla, ma se ci cliccate su scoprirete che i pezzi li conoscete, eccome!).

YAVANNA (“Orinoco flow” di Enya e “Meravigliosa creatura” di Gianna Nannini poi La Vie en Rose di Edith Piaf/Grance Jones) – Su pezzi “pop” continuano a non convincerci più di tanto – il riferimento è al brano della Nannini – e questo, dovendo qui scegliere un artista pop non va a loro vantaggio (insomma: voi comprereste un loro disco? Io non so). Ma rispetto a Silver sono due spanne migliori vocalmente. Su Enya benissimo, il loro mondo è quello. Parecchio sofisticato ma di atmosfera (ma l’esecuzione solo voce e pianoforte su questo pezzo è come l’acqua minerale aperta dopo tre giorni). Velo pietoso sul completino a scacchi (calze comprese) delle tre figliole. Ottime al ballotaggio sul già sentito pezzo della Piaf in doppia versione. Le salva la Mori, giustamente.

GIULIANO RASSU (“Stand by me” di Ben E.King e “Quando” di Pino Daniele) - Dritto come un fuso a centropalco, come i cantanti degli anni’60. No, no, non va. Non diciamo che si debba agitare, ma almeno non stare li fermo. Il resto è nella norma. “Stand by me” è il suo pane e si sente. Sul pezzo di Pino Daniele fa 20 passi (record!). L’interpretazione di  “Quando” è ottima,  ma non ci emoziona, non lo ha mai fatto da quando è entrato. Con lui la Mori non ha mai rischiato, le piace vincere facile.E infatti va in finale (e rischia pure di insidiare Marco).

MARCO MENGONI (“Back in black” degli AC/DC e “Il cielo in una stanza” di Gino Paoli) - La solita macchina da musica. Divora tutto quello che gli danno, compreso l’heavy metal e lo ripropone con classe e stile (però va meglio su altre cose). L’arrangiamento vagamente jazzato su “Senza fine”, assegnato in corsa al posto del pezzo di Morgan è notevolissimo, sull’esecuzione ormai non c’è più nulla da dire. Presenza scenica superba. Se non vince X Factor è un delitto. Mostro assoluto. Va in finale. E tiferemo per lui.

SILVER (“Sunday morning” dei Velvet Underground e “Un piccolo aiuto” di Zucchero poi “Un’avventura” di Lucio Battisti) – Poco convicente vocalmente sul pezzo dei Velvet Underground, anche se la sua presenza scenica lo aiuta molto. Sul pezzo di Zucchero per una volta diamo ragione alla Mori, ci ha fatto sentire il timbro di voce, l’esecuzione solo col piano lo aiuta. Sicuramente è il più pop per gli standard moderni del termine, ma non è detto che sia del tutto una cosa positiva. Al ballottaggio si dimentica di nuovo le canzoni. Arrivederci, è stato un piacere.

INEDITI

YAVANNA – Una donna migliore (Anita Racca – Gaudi-Maiello)- Il problema è che l’inciso è esattamente una strofa di “Ricominciamo” di Adriano Pappalardo, anno 1979, precisamente il punto che dice “So come passi le notti è un tuo diritto io guardo e sto zitto ma penso di tutto”. No, Mara Maionchi, non sono armonie simili, in quel punto sembra proprio lo stesso pezzo! (questo non vuol dire che sia un plagio, l’abbiamo detto più volte, è solo la constatazione di una somiglianza nella melodia). Grandissimo arrangiamento, bella interpretazione. Nota bene: musica di Tony Maiello, quarto a X Factor prima edizione, prodotto da Mara Maionchi.  Allegria. Anita Racca è la mora delle Yavanna.

GIULIANO RASSU – Ruvido (Rassu-Calvetti-Zanotti) – Il pezzo che probabilmente lo manderà a giocarsi la vittoria finale con Marco, in maniera totalmente immeritata per il cammino percorso ma  guadagnata sul campo con questa esecuzione che spazza via tutto quello che si è detto di lui. Si agita per bene sul palco, come non aveva fatto mai e ci mette grinta. Il pezzo lo sente suo, è un  bel soul pop, parecchio radiofonico, coinvolgente. Entra nelle orecchie al primo ascolto e questo conta molto.

MARCO MENGONI – Dove si vola.- Scopriamo che questo era l’inedito che doveva essere di Chiara. E te credo. E’ senz’altro più adatto a lei che a lui che però come dice Morgan è talmente bravo che dà sapore anche all’elenco del telefono. Come Chiara. Che su questo pezzo avrebbe sfondato di sicuro. Su Marco è un pezzo carino, gradevole, parecchio radiofonico, ma niente che valorizzi le sue immense doti vocali. Si poteva fare immensamente meglio, invece gli stanno preparando la strada per Sanremo. Perchè vincerà lui X Factor e a Sanremo gli daranno una cosa così.  Elio, quarto giudice, travestito da Village People ha detto una cosa giusta: se Marco  lavora bene sulla sua voce può diventare il Mika italiano.

SILVER – Fuori c’è il sole (Barbieri- Cecere) – Quando l’artista stesso ti dice in diretta, dopo averlo cantato, che sto pezzo non gli piace, qualche dubbio dovrebbe venire. O no? Per carità, è una canzoncina leggera, anche carina in fondo. Però se questo deve essere il singolo d’esordio, francamente è imbarazzante. Andava bene come traccia 7 dell’album.  Anche perchè poi sembrava di vedere Gianni Morandi prima maniera. Si fischietta, ma è poco dirompente.  Lui già non ha una gran voce, se lo azzeri con un pezzo così fiacco in partenza, è finita. Il testo è sui livelli dell’inedito di Yuri l’anno scorso, lascia parecchio a desiderare. Cade dal palco come Jovanotti a Sanremo, comunque vada è di buon auspicio per la carriera…
