Serena Williams’ infamous U.S. Open rant where she cussed at a lineswoman is set to cost her a recor

Serena Williams’ infamous U.S. Open rant where she cussed at a lineswoman is set to cost her a record amount of money. U.S. Open officials concluded that Serena violated the “major offense rule” for “aggravated behavior” and will have to pay $82,500.

Grand Slam administrator Bill Babcock told The Associated Press Monday that Serena Williams will pay the fine and could be suspended from the tournament if she has another “major offense” at any Grand Slam in the next two years.

Babcock also told the AP that Williams faces a “probationary period” at tennis’ four major championships in 2010 and 2011. If she has another “major offense” at a Grand Slam tournament in that time, the fine would increase to $175,000 and she would be barred from the following U.S. Open.

I’m sure this recent fine is a small thing to a giant like Serena. She earned $350,000 at the semifinals before the incident which she added to the $6.5 million in prize money she earned this year. All together, her career prize money tops $28 million.

Damn….maybe I should take up tennis….

So all is well.

Carol has made the final (so fingers crossed for that on Sunday).

If you don’t know what I am talking about then go to Part 1 and Part 2 to recap.

But I promised to tell you more about the tennis fitness work she had done.

In a nutshell, the aim was to turn back the clock a bit and add some tennis speed, power & endurance back into her tennis game.

I decided to put a tennis fitness program together for her that involved not always having to get to the gym, something she could do at home if she wanted to.

I therefore put together a program that only relied on her bodyweight as resistance, which if any of you know me is plenty!!

What I mean by that is there is so much you can do with your own bodyweight, but too many people are too quick to run off to a gym & sit in a machine that far from improving your performance is actually making it worse.

Let’s get things straight, this is not a tactic only for the non pro, you will see many many top pros like Federer and Nadal using bodyweight exercises as part of their tennis fitness sessions.

As I have said before, if you can’t do 20 push-ups, what makes you think you should be getting under the bar and doing chest presses?

I have been to the big tournaments such as Wimbledon and the French Open at Roland Garros and seen all the top players – Andy Murray, Djokovic, Sharapova, Venus Williams & Serena Williams all doing this stuff on the tennis court.

Apart from all of that, the balance and stability you use when just using your own bodyweight is much higher and will give you the big plus where you need it most – on the court.

After all, playing tennis is all about manipulating your body around the court – isn’t it?

Well, the program was a mixture of upper & lower body exercises (for strength & power) on alternate days along with interval based conditioning (for speed & endurance).

Everything could be done in about 45 minutes which suited her busy schedule perfectly.

Some of the exercises she knew but hadn’t done in ages, while others were new to her.

If she couldn’t complete anything I had set her, she did what she could and that was fine.

The results were…….frankly breathtaking.

After week 2 had passed & she had got used to the routines and the soreness from not having exercised properly for a while, her capacity to work harder, faster and for longer was “off the scale”!!!

Best of all, the impact I noticed most of all was on the court.

Hitting harder, with more spin, getting to more balls, recovering after rallies so that she could get straight into the next point – all greatly improved.

This I believe gave her the confidence to put her game “out there” and is I believe the main reason why she has played so well so far and made the final in such fine style.

Let’s hope she can finish the tournament with a great performance and maybe even a win!!

You can get your hands on the same easy to follow, no gym, weekend warrior, training program by clicking………

http://www.tennisearth.com/news/tennisNews/Venus-Williams–Moving-away-from-Glory-626393.htm

Michael, my doubles partner as opposed to my other partner knows my game pretty well. Though most of the guys in the TLGTA will say my game is modelled after Serena’s; he knows I take more notes from Venus. Her backhand is lethal, and her serve is unlike no other, however she has yet to transfer her grass game to the other surfaces. This year showed promise, with Venus returning to the top 3, winning a number of doubles titles with her sister, but falling short on the big stages.

I 100% agree with this article. She could have been a career slam winner by now; she had opportunities in 2001 and 2003 to win the Aussie Open. I also liked her chances in 2005 and 2007 to rule the French. As she reaches 30, she has to rethink this sisterly love bullshit and bring it to the court. (I know they really love each other). I want more drama and intensity from Venus. I miss the girl who made noise when her beads hit the court and she got a code violation.

Dear Venus – if you happen to read this, I want you to take 2010 and complete your collection.

Now that the WTA season is over and the ladies are resting up for Australia, I thought it was time t

Now that the WTA season is over and the ladies are resting up for Australia, I thought it was time to look ahead and give my predictions for 2010. 2009 was a drama filled year and I expect even more next year. Players will be “ranked” according to what I think their year-end ranking will be for 2010.

1. Serena Williams – Even with the return of Justine Henin and Kim Clijsters, I don’t expect anyone to take over the top spot from Serena and expect her to win at least two Slams for 2010.

2. Caroline Wozniacki - “Sunshine” as she’s known on the tour will have another consistent year and will find herself in another Slam final. If she can win a big one remains to be seen but it will be hard to bet against her next year. Conditioning and her excessive match play may hurt her down the road.

3. Dinara Safina – A lot depends on Safina’s current back injury and her mental toughness for 2010. I can see her in a Slam final but she will have to dismiss whatever demons she has in order to make it back to the top spot.

4. Svetlana Kuznetsova – Despite her mental flaws, “Sveta” will always be a factor in 2010 and will probably make it to another Slam final. If she wins a Slam next year is entirely up to her. Watch out for her at the Australian Open as she finished 2010 in good shape healthwise.

5. Venus Williams – 2010 will be the last chance at glory for Venus as she turns 30 this year. Aside from Wimbledon, she’s not been a factor for a while at the other Slams and her knee could be a big issue. Plus the fact that no one tour is afraid of playing her could may next year very tough.

6-9. These slots will change depending on the names, i.e. Jelena Jankovic, Victoria Azarenka, Elena Dementieva, etc. They could breakthrough and win a Slam, but let’s face it, shouldn’t they have done so already?

10. Kim Clijsters – Everybody keeps salivating over Henin’s return but Clijsters, who played lights out tennis at the U.S. Open, will still go into every tournament with nothing to lose and thus no pressure. I expect Kimmie to be a factor in Australia and a heavy favorite at the U.S. Open again.

Wildcards – Justine Henin will be the story at the Australian Open win or lose. It will all depend on her draws and I actually think the clay court season is where she will find the most success. She has more to lose than Kim Clijsters in her comeback so a Slam victory in 2010 is paramount.

Sam Stosur – Stosur finally won a WTA event in ‘09 and will probably break into the top 10 next year. She’s got the game to win a big one, maybe even Wimbledon, but does she believe she can win is the question.

Maria Sharapova – Sharapova is finally getting back on track after a rocky 2009. If her serve starts clicking again, she could be a factor but probably not until Wimbledon.

Ana Ivanovic – 2010 will define Ivanovic’s entire career. If she can get over her mental and physical fatigue, she could work her way back into the top ten again. If she can’t, I could see her retiring early. Hope I’m wrong.

Melanie Oudin - Next year will be the real test for the feisty American to prove the U.S. Open run was no fluke. I definitely see her in the top 20 before too long. Perhaps the French Open will be her next surprise Slam as she says she likes the clay?

Amelie Mauresmo - There’s been no word yet on Mauresmo’s potential retirement but even if she decides to stick it out, 2010 will probably be her last year. Maybe she will finally go for broke and play with nothing to lose? If so, we could be in for a real treat.

Let me know what you think!

McEnroe – Borg.

Serena Williams ended the Tennis year on a high after beating her rival sibling Venus Williams at the Sony Ericsson’s Championship. But what remains to see is what kind of penalty she will have to face for her out burst at the US Open. It is allege that she threaten one of the lines personnel. Serena and the world awaits her fate.

On a more positive note Serena Williams is the best female tennis player on the planet right now, will be she able to defend her number one status or will she by this time next year have to take a back seat to another. Whatever may happened today Serena is on top of the world.

Important message to Venus Williams – please update your blog! Actually, it’s a message to all pro players. Too many dead, boring websites with badly run blogs. Drop a short line, post a snapshot from practise, say something, do something to communicate with all the fans out there (or have someone do it for you).

So far, only one pro player has mastered this: the one and only Serena Williams. To follow Serena on Twitter, click here. It’s fun (“I’m wearing a Lady Gaga outfit”), clever, informative (“On my way to Jay Leno”) and personal (“I’m tired of the gym…”).

After all the drama that unfolded in Doha the past week, all the crying, kicking and screaming, we got an All-Williams final to make us sleep championship day away. Okay, I admit, I was nursing a hangover but I’m pretty sure I didn’t miss much.

Serena got to the finals only dropping a set (to Vee in RR). She played well and focused the entire week so kudos to you, ReRe, for showing us that you’re still in this (sometimes) and really the player to beat in the women’s tour. Please keep it up in 2010!

Vee on the other hand struggled to get past the round robin stage of the tournament but pulled a good come from behind win against Jelena Jankovic in the semis. She was losing her mind matches after leading a set in RR play which has been a very Venus trend lately. Please stop that in 2010!

The match was very lopsided in the beginning with Serena dusting off her big sister to take the first set 6-2. Venus made the second set a bit more competitive taking it to a tie-breaker but Serena was a tad too strong. Final score: Serena defeated Venus 6-2 7-6(4).

“I (finally) won a tournament that wasn’t a Slam so ha-ha,” Serena said. “Now my losing streak in tournaments that aren’t Grand Slams is over.”

Good for you, World Number 1.

Whatever you think of Venus and Serena Williams their dominance in the world of female tennis over t

Whatever you think of Venus and Serena Williams their dominance in the world of female tennis over the last ten years cannot really be disputed, remarkable considering their background and what they have had to contend with.

As another season drew to a close yesterday in Doha, the sisters contested yet another final against each other, their 22nd to be exact, with Serena ending big sis Venus’ s reign to become the winner.

With this they helped to cement their place as not only two of the greatest players of their generation, but two of the greatest players of all time.

If you feel like the Williams’ have been around forever you would be right; Venus turned pro in 1994 and Serena in 1995.

But when they burst onto the scene in their brightly coloured, daring outfits and beaded hair many thought that their careers would be short lived.

Venus (right) and Serena (left) often play doubles together too (c) Galawebdesign 2009

Their array of other interests outside the tennis world has always been widely documented. Venus’s love of fashion and design and Serena’s passion for music and acting, many thought would have lured them away from the courts long before now.

However they are still here. And whatever the rankings may have been over the years, (Serena is currently placed at number one following her recent victories, Venus six) they have flown through most of the major tournaments uncontested.

All I can say is that scarily they could have potentially been even better if they had dedicated all their energy into the game.

Other Contenders

There were some Belgians who took charge for a bit but then retired. Perhaps their recent return to the game will once again add a new dynamic to the women’s game. A dynamic which has certainly been much needed over the last couple of years.

There have been other challengers too, mainly from the East, to the Williams ascendency. Ana Ivanovic, Jelena Jankovic and most recently Dinara Safina have all been privileged enough to hold the number one ranking spot over the years, only to be dethroned shortly after.

None have been more controversial than Safina, who has failed on countless occasions in the later stages of major tournaments to affirm her ability. It is baffling to many how on earth she managed to stay at the top for so long.

Not only have these girls not left an impression on the game, to me it seems as if they have also not had much of a lasting effect on the public.

Ok so many fans have not exactly become enamoured by the play or personality of the Williams sisters either, but at least people can remember their names and know what they look like.

The rest of the players have in the eyes of many merged into one. The average tennis fan would probably struggle to put a face to a Caroline Wozniacki or a Vera Zvonareva, just two of the other names in the ever changing women’s top ten.

Williams vs Williams

The final of the season ending tournament in Doha yesterday was another one of those sister against sister battles, where you wonder what on earth is going on in the minds of their nearest and dearest.

When it looked more and more likely that this year’s Wimbledon final would once again be between Venus and Serena, there were audible groans from some of my family members.

“Oh it’s not going to be them two again is it? Oh dear that’s boring! They don’t play each other properly” they said.

I argued to the contrary, getting quite fired up and argumentative as I do when I am interested in something, jumping to the defence of another all Williams final.

For one thing I don’t for a second believe the allegations of match fixing that have clouded any match they have ever played.

More importantly for me if it hadn’t been them, who else? That’s when things would have got boring.

During this years’ Wimbledon I was literally sat on the edge of my seat as Serena fought back from the jaws of defeat to beat Elena Dementieva in the semi final.

I have nothing against Dementieva, but she is the nearly woman of female tennis. A Dementieva Williams final or one featuring Dinara Safina, even if she was ranked number one at the time, would not have had the same ring to it, and would probably have not gone down in the history books.

I can’t really argue that any of the Williams’ finals will go down in history for their great tennis, but they will always be memorable all the same.

In the future I imagine that the BBC pundits will sit in the studio talking about the great Williams Wimbledon era.

Venus is after all a five times winner, Serena a 3 times winner and much more impressively only one out of the last ten finals has not featured at least one of the sisters. The facts, as they say, speak for themselves.

So, it is generally accepted that both will enter the record books as two of the most successful female tennis players of all time. Little sister Serena is just in the lead in the sisters head to head with a 12-10 advantage at the moment. But it is for them to decide who will ultimately finish on top.

I hope they stick around for some while to come yet and we can continue to watch them making history. At least until some credible contenders come along to take over…

While at one of my favorite sports the season is coming to an end with the other it has just begun.

While at one of my favorite sports the season is coming to an end with the other it has just begun.

In Doha, Serena Williams beat her sister Venus in a one-sided final 6-2 7-6. In their group both girls had played against one another as well, that match was much closer with a third set tiebreak. Yesterday Venus only made 7 points on Serena’s serve which says something about that serve but also about the return capabilities from Venus. Reminded me of their Wimbledon final where Venus also seemed with a chance on Serena’s serve. Well, the best player of the year won the Year End Championships very deserved. Hope to see all the girls back at their best at the Australian Open in january.

Speed Skating is (maybe after soccer) Holland’s most popular sport. I always compare it with the NFL in the U.S. Other countries don’t get the sport or care about it, but the whole country watches the NFL in the U.S and speed skating back here. This weekend where the Dutch Championships per distance. With so many great skaters in a small country it is very hard to make the dutch team for the winter Olympics in Vancouver next february so there were a few winners but many losers including some of my favorites. The best 5 on a distance can skate in the World Cups the next few weeks to gain some momentum and pre-qualify for the Games. At the Olympic trials in 2 month some of the guys and girls that did not qualify yet have another chance, but it will be very hard then. The Netherlands is the best country in the world at speed-skating but also the U.S and Norway with the men and Canada and Germany with the women have some very good competitors for gold in Vancouver. Hope this great sport will become a bit more popular in the U.S, it deserves it.
