Is it normal to talk to yourself?

Many of us talk to ourselves on a daily basis; we may ask ourselves out loud if we’ve remembered to

Many of us talk to ourselves on a daily basis; we may ask ourselves out loud if we’ve remembered to switch off the heating before we leave the house or utter a verbal list of things we need to do that day. Ask around, you’ll be surprised how many people that do this.

But some people don’t like to admit that they talk out loud; they’re embarrassed as it is often perceived as strange or abnormal…but is it?

Inner dialogue

We all have inner dialogue with ourselves. When we try on a new outfit in a clothes shop, we might ask ourselves if it looks good or if we’re about to do something stressful, we often try to calm ourselves down by saying that everything will be ok. This is normal and healthy. Without this we wouldn’t have any thoughts and where would we be without those?

Self-talk

Athletes have been practising positive self-talk for years – it helps them psyche themselves up for winning a race and performing with confidence. Positive affirmations in the form of self-talk (spoken out loud) provide a healthy way to reconnect with ourselves and tell ourselves positive statements that our brains will then start to believe. The next time you prepare for a run, look in the mirror and tell yourself that you are strong and fit, speak out loud with conviction and you may just be surprised with how well you run that day. PMA – positive mental attitude isn’t just a myth; positive affirmations are a proven way of maintaining a healthy outlook on your life with outstanding results if practiced regularly.

When it becomes a problem…

The definition of ‘normal’ and ‘abnormal’ isn’t black and white – there are no rules and right answers as the question ‘what is normal?’ is subjective. If it feels ok to chat out loud in the privacy of your own home and you’re not telling yourself negative things then carry on as you are! However if you find yourself saying ‘I am stupid’ or ‘I am worthless’ or unhelpful statements along those lines then you need to speak to a counsellor and get to the bottom of your problems. Reinforcing negative thoughts by verbalising them is detrimental to your mental health and requires outside help. Also when you’re talking out loud are you responding to your own inner thoughts or someone else’s? If you’re hearing a different and perhaps unfamiliar voice then again, you need to chat to you GP or counsellor.

As I’m sitting here typing this blog, I’m thinking of the men and women out there silent

As I’m sitting here typing this blog, I’m thinking of the men and women out there silently suffering now. Can it be more evident when I sit here typing this to you and he’s in the other room playing Assassins Creed II and drinking beer, that we’re living two separate lives?

Perhaps you’re living a life of an unequally yoked spouse? Or is your marriage that of an absent spouse, merely the person sharing a bed? I know of men that have been victims to the same abuse from women, men are not immune from adulterating wives, both genders suffer. Love is fleeting on both ends, but in this case, I’m speaking from my heart and my experiences, so bear with me…

As we all meet and greet members in our church, I wonder behind how many smiles is there a soul crying out? A heart whispering, “please help me?” Is the hug you gave in passing to a friend the only one she’s had in weeks? The uplifting words you share, are those the only ones she knows? Tell me there isn’t a soul in your small group going through the same loneliness, rejection or even blatant abuse as possibly you?

Most of us know 1 Corinthians 13:4-7

“Love is patient, love is kind, it does not envy, it does not boast, it is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs, Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails”.

Love never fails…as you read that maybe you believe as I did, that love did indeed fail you!

My first marriage was one destined to fail, I married young and without any knowledge of what it was like in the “real world”. I loved my husband, but the rush of it was to escape my adopted parents (aunt and uncle). Though I was already a legal adult, I was still a child seeking to do the right thing, I was very much trapped there.

Growing up in their home, my sister and I endured many hardships. I can remember every time seventh period came around I was literally sick to my stomach, “what would happen today, it’s friday, two days to go”. When my peers were talking about their plans for the summer I was already hoping the next school year would come quickly! I was the older sister, I loved my sister dearly and wanted to protect her, I tried to please them however I could, including going downstairs so my uncle could molest me.

I’m not sure if you’ve ever heard the song by Amy Grant, Ask Me, Heart in motion CD,

I see her as a little girl hiding in her room
She takes another bath and she sprays her momma’s perfume
To try to wipe away the scent he left behind
But it haunts her mind.

You see she’s his little rag, nothing more than just a waif
And he’s mopping up his need, she is tired and afraid
Maybe she’ll find a way through these awful years to disappear…

I was in sixth grade when I heard this song and realized I was that same girl. I have always been a bit of a fire cracker and called him out on it, with manipulation on his part and my aunt’s physical, verbal and emotional abuse I would always apologize and come back to him. I was almost sixteen before I ever admitted to a friend what was going on and even then after CPS and the courts got involved I recanted the truth in order “to save the family”. I shake my head today at my childhood and most of my life!

I was a Christian, I knew Jesus and I knew He was keeping me through all this. But I definitely had a lot of growing up to do and I was very naive. I expected the man I married to be a born again Christian, well, when my ex-husband got saved, we took off for Vegas! I believed that since we were both “saved” we would live a “happily ever after life”.

The beginning was a beautiful story of hope and perseverance but things did not last that way for long. You see a few weeks into our marriage I received cashiers checks from my aunt and uncle, some of my parents life insurance policy and law suits from the car accident. We had a nice home, new cars and it was all paid for with plenty invested for the future of our family. Yet, this was all too much for him, before I knew it, there were men in our master bathroom (I was sleeping in my bedroom) and they were all getting high.

This is when his true colors came out and the “saved” man I knew was long gone! My husband was an alcoholic, druggie and if you got in his way abusive. He never admitted to any affairs but he always disappeared to the most happening clubs, (we still lived in Vegas) and there was plenty for him to do! I wasn’t twenty-one, so I couldn’t go out looking for him, he’d disappear friday nights and appear at his work by monday morning, then he just quit working all together. I remember freaking out in the beginning, calling all the hospitals, the jails praying he would answer my calls, that he was alright!

I can remember taking a huge stand against this lifestyle but I had no strength, no support, I was so young and confused. I kept praying, “Lord, change him” and how I read 1 Corinthians 13 over and over and maybe I just wasn’t loving him enough, I’d wonder. In time I finally succumbed to the darkness all around me and I found myself dabbling in the same things as he.

It was one day that a camcorder was pulled out at a party and I saw it the following day, sober, I saw myself! Lost, depressed, I saw death…behind the laughter and idiocy, I knew the truth, and I gave him the chance to follow me or stay. I left him several times and many ”changes” before I finally filed divorce. I can remember laying on my bed holding the finalized divorce papers tears rolling down still in shock, heartache and devastation. What had happened to us, how had we gotten here? I even asked him, what I had done wrong, “you were too nice” he said.

Well, at this point I was serving in the Air Force and had to keep going, really in the military you don’t get the option to stay home and mope around, there’s a mission, so get up and do it! I had believed strongly in sexual purity, and even though I felt unclean from the sexual abuse as a child, I knew I was a virgin and had saved myself for my husband. What had he done with it? Well, even though he denied all the affairs, he had his girlfriend living in our home while we were married and I’d always find or hear of what was really going on. With him everything was a secret and a lie, if he didn’t respect me and I had waited for him, why would anyone else? With that, I threw my convictions aside and hoped someone would care, I didn’t expect love at this point, why would I, afterall hadn’t everyone in my life taken what they wanted anyway?

I jumped into a couple of relationships vowing never to marry again, never to set my heart at the altar to be broken again! What is the saying, “never say never?”

We were living in sexual sin, I needed a room-mate to help me with rent, his lease was up and he moved in, made sense financially, I knew it was wrong, but I didn’t pay much attention to that. Well, before you knew it, I was pregnant, followed directly by a miscarriage. Before all this baby stuff we had already broken up once, he liked drinking and I was not choosing that willingly for my life. But he was so charming, so slick, after the miscarriage, a dozen roses and a will you marry me? Really? After the miscarriage, I definitely thought, this was a great opportunity for him to leave, but here he was wanting to marry me? Needless to say, we got married and my beautiful son was on his way before I knew what had happened!

He promised when Noah came along things would change, he’d quit drinking and smoking, this was his last “hoorah”. I can remember one night when he was drunk and I was out of patience, standing over his side of the bed and pregnant, he backhanded a beer bottle and it smacked my stomach, how I prayed Noah would be fine. Well, as I’ve mentioned in a previous post, Noah’s two years old now. I’d like to tell you things are different that he kept his promise, he quit drinking and smoking, that we are a perfect little family. That would again be, the fairytale ending I so desperately would love to tell you, but the truth is he is the same.

After a tour in Iraq I was sure, after seeing life and death, having his life threatened, that he would come back to G-d! No, actually he came home more angry and abusive. Very forceful and controlling of everything. We’ve had many altercations where he’s grabbed me, or pinned me down, cornered me so that I can’t get away, and I will admit I’ve even fought back, which he uses still against me. It’s just like childhood again, except I’m an adult, I have free will to leave, and here I am remaining, hoping G-d will grab him up!

You see when I was pregnant with Noah we attended a service and the pastor asked, “are you ready to walk”. Yes I was, I was sick of all the anger, hate, and trash I was holding in and allowing to eat me up. I was tired of carrying it all on my own and I wanted better for my child. I wanted a Christian home with loving parents, I wanted him to have everything I had dreamed of. I looked at my husband and said, “are you ready?” and the answer was “no”.

Three years later we’re still here at the same place, or rather, I’m walking, well, no I’m running forward, to our Lord, I’m teaching my Noah about all the great gifts our Lord has for Him, His love and mercy! I’m wondering when my husband will be ready, will he ever walk with us? I can tell you so many times I’ve been ready to leave, to take Noah and start our lives new, a healthy and happy home, and I share this with my husband and do you know his answer, “I know”. “I know”, does that mean you don’t care, that you want us to leave? What does that mean? I walked him through the sinner’s prayer almost a week ago, in hope, prayer and supplication that there would be a radical change, that I would see Jesus in him, and yet, no change.

So, as I pray, I keep saying, Lord, what should I do? Do you still hold me to this loveless marriage? In another marriage of alcohol, abuse and adultery? Lord, are things going to change here, or is it time for Noah and I to leave? I feel a great responsibility to remove Noah from this situation, look at my childhood, can you understand why? Yet I still feel that G-d can save this marriage, G-d can do a work in him!

For now, I just keep giving it back to Him, keep praying, keep fasting, keep offering my husband back to Him, asking to see His way, asking to know what to do. I have hope in Jesus and complete trust, whatever it is, I know my Lord has carried me through the clutches of hell and brought me through and back to Him. I know man’s love may be failing, may be for a season, but I now know that I seek His love and not that of a man.

Matthew 5:3-11

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me.”

You see my friends, the Lord sees our hearts, He knows our pains, give Him your burdens, allow Him to carry you through, one day at a time and you’ll be amazed where He’ll take you. May you be found blameless before our Lord, seeking His ways and in Him may you find His blessings!

My Rating: 8/10

Totally it’s a nice album, from the first track until the last, there are a few that I like the most. Not so many ballads, it’s dominated by J-Pop and catchy beat. I like LOVE and HONESTY the most of course. If you heard the intro, it’s nice and so romantic.

For the pop catchy song, I just like Kokoro No Tegami and Milky Way the most. I have no reason why I like it.

The special tracks would be BE THE ONE and KOKORO NO TEGAMI, I feel better in Be The One, it’s rock and really knock down.

Tracks:

1. BUMP BUMP! feat. VERBAL (m-flo)

2. IZM feat. VERBAL (m-flo)

3. BUMP BUMP! feat. VERBAL (m-flo) Instrumental

4. IZM feat. VERBAL (m-flo) Instrumental

BUMP BUMP! feat. VERBAL (m-flo) is BoA’s 29th single and it was released on October 28th, 2009. This single reached #8 on the Oricon Weekly Charts and it has sold 12,706 copies.

It’s been a while, hasn’t it BoA? I mean, Eien was almost a year ago! Anyways, BoA returns with BUMP BUMP! featuring VERBAL of m-flo. These two are quite familiar with each other, so it was nice to hear them in another song together. I thought this song was pretty catchy, since it features a lot of brass and great vocals from BoA. VERBAL has minor parts, and also provides some back-up. It did take some time to grow on me, though, since I wasn’t as into it as first.

I still don’t really like the B-side, IZM. It’s kind of boring, and I just didn’t like the way it sounded. I did like BoA’s vocals, however. I didn’t like VERBAL’s random chime-ins though, since he had become a victim of auto-tune. D:

etc,etc valabil in orice domeniu , in orice ramura a vietii.

CAT 2009 Pattern

Now that most of the surprises related to the computer version of CAT have been uncovered in the last two months (except for the ones you have yet to face between November 28 and December 7 at your test centres), it’s time to take a closer look at the new Official Test Interface. Moreover, the need to utilise the tabs and buttons most effectively can not be over-emphasised at this point.

Here, computer-based examination experts from TCYonline.com help you familiarise yourself with the test interface so as to make the most out of each feature that it offers. So here’s how to master the art of managing time effectively in CAT 2009.

Know thy battlefield
The first step in the preparation process is to know the features of the test interface introduced by Prometric. The following is a snapshot of the testing interface that TCYonline.com has prepared which precisely simulates the official CAT interface:

Official CAT Interface

The above snapshot shows us the four tabs. Additionally, it has also been confirmed that questions will appear one at a time as shown above. Of the four tabs, the most important are ‘Review’ and “Mark’. ‘Review’, because it is the only way one can jump through the sections and multiple questions and ‘Mark’, because, if utilised properly, it can be the perfect time-saver.

How to attempt CAT
These tips might be the same as those advised since CAT 1999 (for a paper-based test), nevertheless, the difference lies in utilising the ‘Review’ and ‘Mark’ tabs to your advantage. Here is what you need to do before starting to solve any question:

* The test will be attempted in three rounds. R-1 must take between 15-20 per cent of the total time. R-2 must take 50 per cent of the time and R-3 will take 25-30 per cent. You must, therefore, calculate the time line for the complete test the moment you read the total time on the computer screen.
* Calculate the average time per question (we’ll call it your ‘alarm time’) that you have, so that you know the maximum time a question can take. This helps you avoid getting personal with a question.
* If the initial introduction gives a listing of the sections, please take a note of the section number for your strength area be it Quant (Q), Verbal (V) or Data Analysis (DA).
* Whether you are interested or not, you MUST have at least a quick glance through the tutorial that will appear before the test.
* In order to avoid panic, please recall that:
o The only way to reset a question is to ‘re-click’ on the selected answer option. You will not find a ‘reset’ or ‘de-select’ button on the computer screen.
o In ‘Review’, you CANNOT move to a desired question unless you double-click on the question number. This is important because many of us would have practiced a ’single click’ option in their mocks and may conclude that the software is not responding properly.

Now that you know what to expect, TCYonline.com recommends the following three stages to help you escape the stress:

Round 1: Raise your confidence
Focus on attempting only the questions that are on topics you are strong in. A question that is expected to take less than alarm time for you qualifies to be taken up in R-1.

Now, you should also work smart. While attempting the selected questions in R-1, you must automatically prepare a list of questions that deserve to be attempted in R-2.

How?
Just put the ‘Mark’ tab to its best use. That is keep on marking the questions that are expected to take a little more than the alarm time, so that when you start R-2 you do not lose focus. Also, ensure that you do not mark more than 22 to 25 questions as you will not have enough time in R-2 to answer more than these many questions.

We urge you to start with the section that is your strong area, no matter if it is Section 3 of the test. You may jump sections using the ‘Review’ screen. This is how the Review screen will appear:

CAT Review Screen

Remember that in DI, most of the questions appear in sets of three or four. It is recommended that one set of three-four questions should be attempted in this round. Moreover, graph / table / chart-based questions should be preferred over logical games in R-1.

In Verbal, try more questions based on grammar and vocab. You should also try a few RC questions based on some specific stanza (and not the complete passage). Avoid doing inference-based RC questions, para-jumbles and FIJ in the R-1. Do para-jumbles only if the jumbled paras are very small.

Round 2: Reaching the threshold
The main target of R-2 is to clear cut-offs and ensure high accuracy. The best way to do this is to go to the ‘Review’ screen and click on ‘Review marked’ written at the bottom. Here, since you have planned and already marked the R-2 specific questions in the R-1 itself, you should be quite comfortable. Here’s how your ‘Review marked’ screen will look:

CAT Review Marked Screen

Questions of R-2 are the ones that may require a little over alarm time and need a few more calculations than those in R-1. You must try attempting two RCs in this round. The first aim is to have a balanced attempt in R-2, for achieving which you must start working on questions from your strength areas. Remember not to get carried away with only one section in R-2 and ignoring the other two. You must do that ONLY AFTER you are certain that you have managed cut-offs in all the three sections.

Round 3: Optimising the score
We say ‘optimising’ and not ‘maximising’ since a difference in attitude can make or mar your percentile in CAT. Keep your cool and be very choosy in selecting the right questions to spend your time on.

But how would you determine which questions to do in R-3? Should you choose to ‘Review all’ or to ‘Review marked’?

Actually, in this round, the ‘Review’ screen decides your navigation. You may click on the ‘Review incomplete’ tab or select one untouched question at a time and remember to get back to the ‘Review’ screen after attempting each question. However, first you have to see whether all the marked questions have been attempted in R-2 or not. If there are still a few remaining, prefer those.

Then, check the number of questions attempted in each section and see if one section has not been attempted much. If you find that you had a balanced attempt, you may now attempt the section that is your strength area to optimise your score.

The time limit for the three rounds may vary from person to person but lies almost in the given range. We recommend you to try this method in your mocks to ensure perfection.

“And then it came out that he was a biologist or biochemist; or psycho-biophysicist, which he liked best of all. Six universities had canned him for his strange ideas and refused to look at his experimental results. With all this scientific training he wasn’t going to be an infantry man. So he shipped, and this was his fifth voyage. At sea he could keep up his scientific work.

Why did I always have to fall among theoreticians!”

Because, Augie, theoreticians, sloganeers, jargoneers, quacks, men who spread their stiff nets of pedantry and dogma and all-swallowing hollowly elaborate non-language are exactly what so many novels seem to need in their quest for inner textures and the truly, darkly expressive — how badly the novel needs the men who have gone all outward, the wrong way, who possess what you might call an interiority only in the way that trumpets and other large brasses possess an interiority–whose speechiness generates the shining sounding deafening welter within which single voices, single minds, single beings huddle, shelter, turn inward and selve.

What I’m saying is: Augie, you need your Basteshaws and Einhorns like Bovary needed Homais.

PS: Mad props to Hopkins for coining the verb ‘to selve.’

Kinki Kids easily grab themselves the top spot. Great sales also for UVERworld and Nana Mizuki also. Dissapointing sales for Morning Musume, as this is the second lowest selling single of the band’s career, as well as the last single featuring member Koharu Kusumi. BoA is down in 8th this week (but she never was a strong single seller). Lots of singles also still up there from last week (and weeks before in B’z’s case).
