Spaulding Gray’s Review of The Cheese Show on Martha Stewart I know I said “Got Milk” was next

Spaulding Gray’s Review of The Cheese Show on Martha Stewart

I know I said “Got Milk” was next up in Cheese 101… but after The Lady and I watched Martha Stewart’s Cheese Show –twice – I made the executive decision to change the format a bit and review MS’s show.

The Lady loves Martha Stewart and wishes she had more time to watch her show. Also The Lady is still pissed over the whole “going to the pokey thing” and contends that had MS been a man, she would have never had to clean the warden’s office or whatever befell her during those dark days…but I digress…

Martha really had it going on with The Cheese Show. She concentrated on American Artisanal Cheesemakers (a passion of mine as well) and began with a few facts about this growing industry:

Twenty years ago, there were less than 100 artisanal cheesemakers in the U.S. Today there are around 400.

Because the show featured Vermont artisanal cheesemakers, most of these statistics are Vermont-only: In Vermont, there were 11,000 dairies in 1950; today there are now only about 1100.

And while the number of Vermont dairies has drastically declined; the number of Vermont artisanal cheesemakers has doubled over the last decade.

A little more than 50% of the artisanal cheesemakers in Vermont make cheese from cows’ milk; 25% use goats’ milk and the remainder make their cheeses from sheeps’ milk.

The first segment of the show introduced 5 Vermont artisanal cheesemakers:

Former Literary Agent, Angela Miller and her husband moved to Vermont and bought the historic Consider Stebbins Bardwell Farm. Located in the Champlain Valley, this farm founded in 1864 by Consider Bardwell was the home of the first cheesemaking co-op in Vermont. Their “Rupert”, an aged, raw Jersey cow milk cheese placed 3rd in “Best of Show” at the 2009 American Cheese Society Competition. They also raise and milk goats on their farm.

Hannah and Greg of Blue Ledge Farms, both landscape artists, came to Vermont to raise their children and create a sustainable lifestyle and business built on mutual respect for the land, the consumer and most of all the animals. They raise and milk a combination of Alpine, Lamancha and Nubian goats. As with all the cheesemakers MS featured, Blue Ledge has won many awards for their cheeses.

Repentant Lawyers John and Janine Putnam make Alpine-style cheese on their Thistle Hill Farm in North Pomfret, Vermont. Along with their four children and their 40+ Jersey cows (of which 20-21 are milked), they make certified organic Tarentaise cheese. This cheese is made in copper vats, essential to the development of the proper flavor (the Gruyere The Lady made at Roth Kase was also made in copper vats for the same reason).

Willow Hill Farm in Milton, Vermont is another certified organic dairy that makes both cows’ milk and sheeps’ milk cheeses. They also have a “u pick” certified organic blueberry patch. Sheeps’ milk is the richest milk of the three main milks used to make cheese (Cows’ milk and goats’ milk being the other two)and the sheeps’ milk yield is also the smallest. In addition to the small yield, sheep have the highest multiple births and these factors make sheep farming the most labor intensive in dairy farming.

Last, but certainly not least, we met the two men who own and run Cellars at Jasper Hill Farm in Greensboro, Vermont. These two artisans built 22K square feet underground vaults to ripen cheeses they buy from artisanal cheesemakers throughout Vermont. They buy the green and un-ripened cheeses; use the “recipes” of the cheesemakers to ripen the cheeses; and then market and sell the cheeses. This frees the small cheesemakers to concentrate on what they do best: make cheese.

Martha also briefly introduced, Anne Saxelby, of Saxelby Cheesemongers, who specializes in American Artisanal cheeses and sells them from a stall at the Essex Street Market on the Lower east Side of Manhattan. If The Lady and I have one criticism of the show, it is that we would have loved to learn more about this woman whose passion in life is bringing American Artisanal cheeses to the plates of everyone in Manhattan. She spent two years at Murray’s Cheese Shop (which The Lady swears it the Mecca of cheese); then an apprenticeship at Connecticut’s Cato Corner Farms and finished with six months touring cheese shops and cheesemakers in Europe.

The second segment of the show was an interview with Murray’s VP, Liz Thorpe, who presented a cheese sampler for the audience to taste using 5 cheeses from the aforementioned Vermont Cheesemakers. MS also plugged Liz’s new book, “The Cheese Chronicles” (which The Lady dashed out to buy and will review here in the near future). Liz has been in the cheese biz for 8 years and it all started with a visit to a small cheese shop in Manhattan and the rest is…as they say… history…

Liz was quite down-to-earth regarding the cheese plate she constructed: “Something old; something new; something stinky and something blue”. She built the cheese plate from 12 o’clock starting with the mildest of the cheeses featured: Blue Ledge’s Crottina (from goats’ milk) and proceeded to Consider Bardwell’s Dorset (a raw, aged Jersey Cow milk cheese). The third cheese on the plate was Willow Hill’s Autumn Oak (the only sheeps’ milk cheese on the plate). Then it was onto Thistle Hill’s Tarentaise, a robust and nutty Alpine-style cheese reminiscent of a European Beaufort. (Liz explained she would select this cheese over any cheddar when making a grilled cheese sandwich). The last cheese was Bayley Hazen Blue from The Cellars at Jasper Hill Farm which according to Liz had a crumbly consistency and a flavor that reminded her of popcorn.

The audience was thrilled to learn that each of them would be receiving a copy of Liz’s new book.

The next segment featured Lisa Schwartz and her Rainbeau Ridge Farm in Bedford, New York (a mere 5 miles from MS home). Lisa milks 35 Alpine goats twice daily and also runs a community agriculture partnership which sells organic, seasonal fruits and vegetables to the locals. And as if cheesemaking and farming weren’t enough, Lisa finds time to teach the local children how to make cheese and grow veggies: to teach them to connect to the food they eat.

Lisa began with 2 goats in 2002 and customers that were primarily friends and family. She and Martha made a “farmers cheese” together during this segment; a recipe that any of us could do at home with favorable results.

Lisa, like Liz, has a new book: “Over the Rainbeau” which is available on her website.

The fourth segment featured Terrance Brennan, Chef-Proprietor of Artisanal Fromagerie, Bistro and Wine Bar at 2 Park Avenue in Manhattan, who made a simple fondue using Uplands’ Pleasant Ridge and Thistle Hills’ Tarentaise – two cheeses perfect for fondue.

Chef Brennan’s tips for making a successful fondue:

Use only two or no more than three cheeses when making fondue. The Alpine-style cheeses are the best as they melt and homogenize better than other cheeses.

A high-acid white wine also helps homogenize the cheese.

A little cornstarch will help thicken the melted cheese and make it easier to stick to your bread and other dipping “goodies”.

When immersing your item into the cheese, use a “figure 8” motion to stir the fondue. This helps emulsify the fondue mixture.

When you add the grated cheese to your fondue pot, make sure the cheese is at room temperature.

If you drop your goodies into the cheese, you MUST kiss the cook…this is The Man’s favorite tip from this segment. I suspect it is also a favorite for The Lady…

In the next quick segment, Martha showed the audience how to make three easy cheese appetizers: Lacy Cheese Wafers, sautéed in a skillet; Pitted Dates filled with goats’ cheese and Martini Olives filled with blue cheese.

The final segment featured The Lady’s friend, Allison Hooper of Vermont Butter and Cheese who also has a new book, “In a Cheesemakers’ Kitchen” (another recent addition to the cheese book library at the manse). Martha and Allison featured several of the cheeses that Allison and her partner, Bob Reese make including Crème Fraiche and Bonne Buche (which means “good mouthful” in French).

If you love cheese, then this is one of the most pleasurable hours you can spend learning more about the American Artisanal Cheese movement. If you don’t love cheese, then you should seek professional help immediately.

I give Martha Stewart’s Cheese Show 2009 4 Paws out of 4 Paws (cause that’s all I’ve got).

Northeastern returns to the ice on Friday night, when they host Vermont in a post-Thanksgiving clash

Northeastern returns to the ice on Friday night, when they host Vermont in a post-Thanksgiving clash at Matthews Arena. The Catamounts and Huskies have not met so far this season, but UVM holds a 21-15-4 series edge. Since Vermont joined Hockey East in 2005-06, the Catamounts have enjoyed recent success against the Huskies, as they have gone 8-4-3. NU went 2-1 against Vermont last year, with their only loss coming in the third game of the season series on January 17. This is a pivotal game for both teams, as they are deadlocked in a three-way stalemate for third place, as Northeastern, Vermont, and Maine each hold seven points.

The Huskies enter the game with a 5-5-1 record (3-4-1 Hockey East). Northeastern is coming off of a three-point weekend against Providence in a home-and-home series. Tyler McNeely, Wade MacLeod, and Kyle Kraemer each notched a goal and an assist, while Chris Rawlings made 28 stops in a 4-1 win at Matthews Arena on Friday. Garrett Vermeersch scored a goal and an assist for Northeastern in the teams’ 3-3 tie at Schneider Arena the following night. Vermeersch leads the Huskies with three goals and six assists for nine points, while Chris Rawlings has factored into every decision, going 5-5-1, with a 2.94 goals against average and a .915 save percentage.

Vermont enters Matthews with a 4-5-1 mark (3-4-1 Hockey East). The Catamounts have improved in November, going 2-1-1, after a 2-4 October. David Pacan scored a goal and an assist for UVM in a tough 6-2 loss to #10 Massachusetts on Tuesday, in which James Marcou dished out five assists and Casey Wellman scored a hat trick and an assist for the Minutemen. Mike Spillane made 25 stops in net. Brayden Irwin leads the Catamounts with four goals and six assists for ten points, while leading netminder is 2-4-1, with a 3.73 goals against average and a .931 save percentage. Spillane is 2-1-0, with a 3.30 GAA and a .879 save percentage.

Friday’s game will be broadcasted on Huskies Radio (Rob Rudnick and Bill Doherty) and WRBB Sports (Keith Lavon and Alex Faust).

Matt Janning and Alwayne Bigby led Northeastern with 18 and 16 points, respectively, while Nkem Ojougboh led the Huskies with eight boards. Jake O’Brien’s jumper with 51 seconds left iced the game for the Terriers, although the Huskies had a final shot with nine seconds left, which missed. The Huskies will get back to work on Saturday, when they host Wright State at Matthews Arena.

HUSKIES 1, Vermont 0 – Alyssa Wohlfeiler scored the game-winning goal in the second period to lift the WOMEN’S HOCKEY team to a 1-0 shutout win against Vermont at Matthews Arena. The win gave Northeastern its first series sweep of the Catamounts since they joined Hockey East in 2002-03, as they outscored UVM, 5-0 in the series, despite being outshot in two of the three games. The Huskies return to action on Sunday, when they host UNH at Matthews Arena.

This post I wrote around this time last year, pretty much sums it up. But now it is even better: for we have a 6 year old girl who draws pictures and writes about being “peesful and relaksed,” a four year boy old who today asked for a salad in his lunchbox because it is healthy, and added to the mix this year, a 9 month old boy who crawls and stands and laughs harder and easier than anyone I’ve ever met. The three of them are best friends and constantly remind me what is important in life. And that is family.

Also, there is a person behind all of this who has somehow reversed the usual trend and has grown more and more beautiful both inside and outside since we met more than 17 years ago. Too many degrees of beauty to begin to define, but all the good things in my life seem to have a shared interest in her, my wife.

I have both parents and both parent-in-laws, and brothers and a sister and a brother-in-law and sisters-in law, and nieces and nephews and cousins and my kids even have a great grandmother. And somehow, over distance, over time, everyone gets along.

I have some friends.

I have my health.

I have wireless headphones.

I live in rural Vermont.

I still have dreams.

I have more than anyone really should ever have.

I am beyond thankful.

Another game, another halfhearted analysis thrown together by SM because he didn’t see any of

Another game, another halfhearted analysis thrown together by SM because he didn’t see any of the game. My apologies. Like an idiot, I opted to not skip any of my classes to leave school early yesterday, and it ended up taking close to 7 hours to get home thanks to a traffic jam that started on 95 in Norwalk, CT and didn’t end until I got on the Garden State Parkway 42 miles later. Beej actually watched the entire game and was texting me updates, but I don’t expect much out of him anymore.

Anyway, turns out I didn’t miss a whole lot. I thought maybe I’d make it home for the end of this one, but apparently the game ended with 18 minutes left in the second half. Seriously, check out the game flow chart over at Friarblog which I’d repost here except StatSheet doesn’t support embedding on WordPress blogs. This game turned into a blowout largely because of the efforts of Marshon and Greedy, who are absolutely taking over this team, especially given Sharaud Curry’s mysterious “injury” that has kept him from doing anything (a side note, last night at dinner, my dad asked me, and I quote, “Has anyone drawn a picture of a basketball for Sharaud Curry yet?”) Marshon had his usual 45 points in the first 8 minutes (not really) and The Greedy Ratio was a STELLAR 2.22, thanks in large part to his 3-3 performance from behind the arc (um… what?). The threes were falling all night for just about everyone, in fact, with Marshon hitting 4 of his 5 3 point attempts and the legendary Kyle Wright hitting 3 of his own, contributing to his 13 points/6 rebound performance that literally no one saw coming. Oh, by the way, Sharaud Curry was 0-2 from 3 and scored 9 coming off the bench. He did pace the Friars with 5 assists, however, so I’m not going to gripe too much. For now. Bilal Dixon and James Still did their jobs down low, bringing down a team leading 7 boards a piece, combining to record 3 blocks, and not getting into foul trouble for the first time in several games (2 PFs for Bilal, 3 for Still). Instead, it was Chainsaw that got in foul trouble, and quite honestly, if he’s picking up the personals, it means Bilal isn’t, and I’m kind of OK with that. If there’s one complaint I have here, it’s with Johnnie Lacy, who is not exactly living up to having Ryan Gomes’s number on his back. 1-7 shooting ain’t gonna do it, pal. I understand he’s a freshman, and I’m not going to sit here and completely pick him apart for one bad game. All I’m saying is that with several other new guys (Bilal, VC and his 4-1 ast:TO, Duke Mondy, James Still, and apparently, Kyle Wright) stepping up in a big way, he’s gonna have to keep pace to get minutes.

Clearly, the offense was on last night, and that’s what this team was built for. The defense was apparently clicking as well, however, which is an added bonus. This is a lineup, as it has been in years past, that is capable of shooting the lights out on any given night, but it’s nice to have some defense to fall back on in case the shooting isn’t there. When the shooting is there and the defense steps up, you get 42 point wins. Simple as that. Just looking at the stats, Vermont couldn’t buy a bucket, especially from 3 point range (36.7% FG, 14.3% 3pt), and no one not named Marqus Blakely did ANYTHING offensively. Blakely put up a respectable 24, and only two other players, Maurice Joseph and the hilariously named Brendan Bald scored in double figures. None of them had especially stellar shooting nights. Two starters were shut out entirely. Additionally, Vermont turned it over 23 times, 19 of which were directly caused by Friar steals. Marshon led the defensive effort with 5 steals, followed by Duke and Sharaud, who had 4 and 3 steals, respectfully. It’s worth mentioning the Friars had 19 turnovers of their own, but in their defense, it appears the majority of them came from the bench in garbage time, so I won’t put too much stock into that. One other thing worth mentioning, walk-on Chris Carter got 3 minutes in the game. I’m reasonably sure he was the team manager last year. Good for him. Someone’s gotta fill the giant shoes of “Big Bus” Brian Beloin.

Well, with Plymouth just down the road from where I’m writing, it seems fitting to take the time to give thanks.

I am thankful for the power play. With last night’s 3 for 6 effort on the extra man advantage UMass is now converting at an mind-boggling rate of 29.1%, 3rd best in the country. Last season the team finished the year with a power play of 16.1%. What’s the difference? I think it is simply the fact that you have a group of players that see the ice well, make smart passes, and most importantly seem to mesh very well with the other guys on the ice. There have been some major line shuffling due to injury and such and yet the guys don’t seem to be missing a beat and are able to find each other on the ice. Last season I don’t think that was the case.

I’m thankful for the penalty kill. Not only is UMass killing 84% of the penalties, but they are doing a great job of staying out of the box in general.

I’m thankful for the young defensemen. Some very talented blueliners graduated last year and to be successful this season it was going to take some improved play from guys like Matt Irwin, Doug Kublin, and Mike Marcou plus some quality minutes from Darren Rowe and Mike Donnellan. Well, the team has gotten exactly what it needed from all of them. Irwin was already emerging as a top defensemen by the end of last year but Kublin has been very steady on D while Mike Marcou has been the same and has added a little offense to go with it. Donnellan and Rowe have played with poise and limited their mistakes despite platooning for that last defensive spot.

I’m thankful for the schedule. Starting the season with a bunch of games in the Mullins Center allowed the team to gel and the freshmen to get comfortable. Now with two wins in a row on the road over ranked teams, that development time in the comfort of the Bill is paying off. However it doesn’t get any easier as there are some even more challenging road games on the horizon starting this Saturday at #9 Quinnipiac.

I’m thankful for Casey Wellman. Casey is doing it all. 9 goals in 11 games. That puts him at 5th in the country in goals per game and only two behind his entire total from last year. He also has 9 asissts in that same time and has become the goto man for key faceoffs. And he’s only a sophomore.

I’m thankful for James Marcou. With 21 points he’s tied for the lead in the nation and tops for points per game. With his 5 assists last night he now has 100 points for his career, good for 7th all time at UMass (passing Pond Club President Mike Merchant). With only 4 more he’ll be in 3rd place. I always figured Pat Keenan’s 180 points was out of reach. If Marcou comes back next year, it may not be.

I’m thankful for solid goaltending. With the unexpected scoring explosion so far this season it’s probably easy to overlook the good job both Paul Dainton and Dan Meyers have done to date. Well so far UMass has the 3rd best scoring defense in the conference overall and the best in league games.

I’m thankful that I’ve been able to get to most of the games. Thanks to a favorable work schedule and only two games beyond reasonable driving distance; Niagara and Vermont. And for those couple games I couldn’t make I’m thankful for John Hennessey and Brock Hines for bringing the game to me.

I’m thankful for the team’s determination. Multiple times they gone down by a goal or two, played well and still been losing, been pushed to the brink, but they haven’t given up yet. They’ve scratched and clawed, scored dramatic game tying goals with only seconds left and then put away game winners in overtime. They find a way to win and as one FTT reader said, that’s what good teams do.

Fear The Triangle Player of the Game – Casey Wellman
When you score three goals in less than ten minutes, add and assist, and win 65% of your faceoffs, you’re pretty much a shoo-in for this award. Obviously under other circumstances it would’ve gone to the guy with five assists instead.

Δ

The athletic department’s official writeup notes that Marcou’s five assists were the most by a UMass player since 1957.

Here’s the recap from the Collegian.

The Burlington Free Press warns teams to beware Marcou, Wellman, and the UMass power play.

Δ

There was a surprising result from the Coffin last night as the Friars beat #3 Lowell 4-2. BU was able to squeak by Harvard in overtime. A game of interest being played tonight will be Princeton travelling to Connecticut to take on Saturday’s opponent, Quinnipiac.

Δ

John Parker’s recent performance is mentioned in the weekly USHL recap. Also noted in the recap is the first goal of the season for Eddie Olczyk’s brother, Tommy.

Peter DeAngelo had a nice goal described in this story from a Monarch’s game. Makes me wish I had gone to the game as I had originally hoped to, but I didn’t want to chance missing any of the Patriots game.

Vermont is the sixth hungriest state in the latest USDA survey of food insecurity in the United Stat

Vermont is the sixth hungriest state in the latest USDA survey of food insecurity in the United States. This is a state in which, if you have the money, you can eat very well: locally produced food, award-winning cheese, and so on. But 12 percent of Vermont households struggled to get enough food on the table in 2008, and one in 20 Vermonters was “severely hungry.”

Foodbank CEO John Sayles said the Vermont Foodbank delivered 7.5 million pounds of food in 2008 — 1 million more pounds than the previous year — and expects to deliver 8 million pounds this year.

The need is growing and will likely continue to rise even as the economy improves, he said.

“We’ve seen a 35 to 40 percent increase in demand over the last year,” Sayles said.

A Bellows Falls drop-in center has served 53 percent more meals in the past year while the Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf in Burlington, the largest food distribution outlet in the state, had 1,000 more people coming in for help this year, Sayles said.

Marissa Parisi, director of the Vermont Campaign to End Childhood Hunger, said she’s heard of children taking home part of a school snack in their pocket for later and others who line up for school breakfast on Monday, famished after a weekend at home.

“We really believe that hunger is an injustice that should not exist in this country and should not exist in this state,” she said.

Yes, emergency food supplies are needed but they’re not going to solve the real problem. The existing food system—consisting of both farmers and consumers—needs to be changed.

#10 Massachusetts Minutemen 8-2-0, (Hockey East 4-2-0 4th)
at
#18 Vermont Catamounts 4-4-1, (Hockey East 3-3-1 T-5th)

Vermont Catamounts Official Site

It’s that time of year again, UMass and Vermont meet tonight in the annual Turkey Tuesday tilt. I love that these two old Division II ECAC rivals get together for this yearly tradition. Unfortunately I haven’t exactly loved the results the last few years as the Minutemen have dropped the last three of these holiday week contests. Over the past ten years UMass is 4-5-1 in the pre-Thanksgiving matchups. Add in the fact that UMass has to travel to Burlington where they’ve gone 1-3-1 over the past three seasons and this is certainly proving to be quite a test for the squad.

UVM currently sits at .500 both overall and in Hockey East, but they have yet to lose at the Gutt. They have done ok against top level teams, splitting a series with Denver and tying Lowell, but losses to Merrimack and Maine probably have some Catamount fans scratching their heads. UVM last played over a week ago when they split a series at Boston College by the scores of 1-7 and 3-2. Going into the season the biggest question mark was who would take over the scoring lost when Viktor Stalburg jumped to the Maple Leafs. I think the Catamounts are still waiting for that answer as they come in ranked 7th in the conference in scoring offense and sport the worst power play at just 12.2%.

While they haven’t had anyone step up and put the scoring load on their shoulders they have gotten some here and there from a number of players. Bayden Irwin and Justin Milo lead the team with 4 goals each while a half dozen other players also have more than one goal. Irwin is really the key as he’s leading the team in goals, assists and plus/minus. Wahsontiio Stacey is second to Irwin in team points with 7. Juniors Kevan Miller and Kyle Medvec have both performed well on defense. I think the biggest surprise for UVM so far this season has been their poor goaltending. Rob Madore looked to be the best freshman goaltender in the league last year (yeah, yeah, Millan won a title. How’s he doing now without that defense?) but now he finds himself at or near the bottom of the league in goals against and save percentage. His GAA of 3.73 is downright upsetting. (edit: it now appears Madore will not get the start tonight)

UMass is coming off a thrilling overtime win at #9 Yale and enjoy their first top ten ranking of the season. If they want to win at the tough environment that is Gutterson Field House they’ll have to cut down on the mistakes that allowed Yale to stay in the game last Thursday. UMass dominated play through most of the first two periods but the Elis were able to stick around and ultimately take the lead due to the Minutemen taking too many penalties and turning the puck over in their own zone. Every time UMass had a little bit of momentum the whistle would blow and they’d find themselves shorthanded. While UVM doesn’t have much of a power play it’s still important for UMass to have their best players on the ice.

The team continues to get production from all four lines, with three of them on the ice for the four goals last week. I’m guessing Toot will keep the Syner/Carzo/Boehm line together as they clicked very well and led to a number of odd man rushes against Yale. With Madore’s struggles so far this year it’ll be important to challenge him early and hopefully put one in the net to shake his confidence.

Unfortunately I won’t be able to make the trip to tonight’s game but for those who do make sure to take a look at the Road Trip page for some suggestions on one of Hockey East’s best destinations. I will however be Twittering updates. Also, remember that with tonight’s hoops game going at the same time the hockey broadcast will be available only through the internet.

In an appeal from the Vermont Environmental Court that upheld a denial of an application to build a

In an appeal from the Vermont Environmental Court that upheld a denial of an application to build a single-family dwelling, the state Supreme Court concluded that the property in question did not qualify as a preexisting, non-conforming, small lot and the Town was not estopped from denying the application. The property in question was originally part of a 66 acre parcel owned by previous owners, of which five acres were located on the west side of Horn of the Moon Road while the remaining 61 acres were located on the east side.

The town zoning regulations were first enacted in 1970 and amended in 1974 to require a minimum lot size of seven acres in the district where the property is located. In 1985, previous owners obtained a 50 acre parcel of the property, and in 1989 they obtained subdivision approval to divide the parcel into two lots, one consisting of approximately 36 acres on both sides of the road, and the other consisting of about 12.2 acres, with eleven acres on the east side of the road and 1.2 acres on the west. In 1990, the applicant acquired title to the 12.2 acre parcel with a deed describing the lot as consisting of two parcels: the eleven acres east of the road and the 1.2 acres west of the road. The 11.2 acre parcel had already been developed with a single-family dwelling, which the applicant has occupied as his principle place of residence. In July 2007, applicant applied for a zoning permit to construct a second single-family residence on the 1.2 acre parcel but giving the minimum lot size of 7 acres the zoning administrator denied the application, and on appeal, the zoning board of adjustment upheld the ruling.

The Environmental Court granted the Town’s motion for summary judgment, agreeing that the Town was not estopped from denying the application because the zoning administrator had earlier approved similar property. The court also granted the Town’s motion for summary judgment on the permit application.

The Vermont Supreme Court examined the Town’s zoning regulations for preexisting small lots that fail to meet minimum lot size requirements. The regulations provide an exception that describes any lot in individual and separate and non-affiliated ownership from surrounding properties in existence on the effective date of the regulations, indicating that they may be developed for the purposes permitted. The Court said that this was a limited grandfather clause allowing for limited development. The court held that even assuming that the road may prevent the merger of lots on either side, there was no evidence that the 1.2 acre parcel was ever separately held as an independent lot when the Town enacted its regulations. Furthermore, the court conceded that at the time of the 7 acre minimum regulation, the 5 acre parcel was grandfathered as a preexisting small lot, however this same status would not devolve upon applicant’s smaller 1.2 acre parcel, which was only later created from the 5 acre parcel. To hold otherwise, the court held, would literally permit the compounding of preexisting non-conforming use, in clear violation of the public policy in favor of restricting or eliminating such uses. Thus, the 1.2 acre parcel does not qualify as a preexisting non-conforming small lot.

In re Mastelli Construction Application, 2009 WL 2901870 (VT. 9/4/2009).

The Supreme Court Opinion is unpublished.

• It Isn’t About Globalization
• Responsible Beer Tourism

Colorado's brewers' guild is the latest to announce a membership program to benefit fans of local beer.

Oregon has SNOB. Illinois has IMBIBE. The Green Mountain state created the Passport program, also called DRINK VERMONT. And now Colorado has created the SOCIAL Drinker program. No, these aren’t state college hazing rituals – they are ingenious collective marketing strategies executed by state brewery guilds.

What’s a brewers’ guild and where do I find one? Firstly, a guild is a trade association of brewers, typically from within one state. At last count, thirty states have brewers guilds. California has no less than four. The Brewers Association provides a current list. What you’ll find with each guild is a little different. Some guilds list every brewery in the region, while others will only promote their own membership. The few breweries that have decided to sit out from guild membership should rethink that decision. Guilds today are very active promoters of local beer, act as legislative watchdogs, and organize innumerable events.

Guilds usually use websites and brochures to convey to the public what they do and to galvanize local brewers to become members. The San Diego Brewers Guild provides a mission statement that could work for most any:

The mission of the San Diego Brewer’s Guild is to promote awareness and increase the visibility of fresh, locally brewed beer through education and participation in community events. To that end we are providing you, the discriminating beer lover, with a handy place to find info about our fresh local beers and the breweries that make them.

Most guilds offer a website with a map, or at the very least, a listing of member breweries. The New York State Brewers Association offers a downloadable Brewery Trail Map. Maine uses a google map.

Googling breweries in Maine.

Indiana has an interactive online map, while Hawaii lets you play find-an-island-with-a-brewery.

Guild sites will have calendars, adverts, specials, and some fun photo galleries. But the best treat of all is the growing number of guilds with various customer appreciation benefits. Take the new Colorado SOCIAL Drinker program (“social” = “supporter of Colorado’s indigenous ales and lagers”). For an annual membership of 25 bucks you get a shirt, discounts, special invites, and whatever else social networking can get you (LOL – you saw it coming, didn’t you?). SOCIAL Drinker is based on Oregon’s SNOB (“supporters of native Oregon beer”), one of craft beer’s most well known consumer membership programs.

With the Vermont Passport program, you get a free card listing all of the state’s breweries. All you have to do is visit all of them and collect a little “Drink Vermont” rubber stamp from each. Send in the card and get a bundle of schwag. Visiting only some at least lands you a hat or a shirt. Let’s face it, it can require daring do, with Trout River Brewing only open two days a week up there in the boonies known locally as the Northeast Kingdom. Do I hear banjos?

Next time you see a brewers guild set up at a beer fest, be sure to tell them what a great job they are doing. And above all, local beer supports local producers and retailers. Cheers! TPJ
