My morning usually starts with me doing 5 different things at once, until eventually I focus on one. For example, this morning I was having breakfast, while checking my mail, getting dressed and watching “Les Poupées Russes” – the follow-up movie to “L’Auberge Espagnole” (haven’t seen that yet).

As I was starting to settle into the movie, my mind started wandering to Russian dolls, and I started remembering how captivating they are – both visually and metaphorically. I’ve always been fascinated by their intricate illustrations and how perfectly they fit into each other. So I started googling, while still doing all the other things.

In Russia, these little dolls are called “Matrioshkas”, and I found some really funky ones that were designed for the 10 year anniversary of Vogue Russia:

Last year, some of fashion’s biggest names teamed up to design Matrioshkas, that were realized and hand-painted by Russian craftsmen. The result was a unique set of Matrioshkas, each “a piece of art in itself,” said Aliona Doletskaya, Russian Vogue’s editor-in-chief. Check out a few of the designs:

You can spot the distinct designers in each of the dolls. It would’ve been cool to see the entire set for each doll – inside out – but doubt there was enough time to implement. Does anyone know where I can find designer knock-offs of these dolls?

So W just dropped news that Joanna Newsom has a proper follow-up to Ys and the subsequent Joanna Newsom and the Ys Street Band EP, the particulars to which twentyfourbit.com elaborated, all of which I know about thanks to GRCA’s Emily Marks.

Now, I’m not sure why it’s taking her so long to make another full-length, which I’m assuming Drag City is releasing. Some might speculate that her hiatus might be due to her relationship with SNL’s Andy Samberg. And while I have no problem with giving Samberg a good feminist hard time, I’m not entirely sure if her absence can be attributed to playing house. With recent appearances in trendy fashion magazines like W, much as she did earlier in her career with publications like PAPER, I think it might have something to do with playing dress-up.

Yikes! I realize those last two sentences might have infantilized the singer, something choruses of music critics do any time they call her voice “child-like.” What I mean is that Newsom has been mingling in the fashion world. Perhaps it’s no surprise that a long-haired, full-lipped, leggy white lady recording artist can get designers to take notice. However, I find it particularly interesting who she’s syncing up with, how this might help construct her image, and what all this might suggest about the commodification of indie. Because she’s not just putting on Armani. She’s friends with Rodarte, waxing pretentious about the collaborative process and wearing their designs to in-the-know, downtown fêtes.

Sisters Kate and Laura Mulleavy, who created a label honoring their mother’s maiden name, Rodarte, have made quite a splash in the fashion world and on the red carpet over the past few years. They seem like cool ladies with whom I’d definitely want to watch some movies. Yet I’m still on the fence about their decidely avant-garde design aesthetic. I almost like a lot of it, but it gets way too drapey and twee at times — particularly when factoring in the cost.

Natalie Portman and Reese Witherspoon’s dresses for the 2009 Oscars were vivid shades of pink and blue, but the knotty bodice patterns and woozy detailing made me a bit nauseous. Similar situation with the dress Tilda Swinton wore for a premiere of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button – loved the color palette, wanted to rip off the sleeves. And in theory, I like the Rodarte sweater Kristen Stewart wore in last January’s Teen Vogue, but in actual practice, I have a hunch that I could find some moth-eaten angora free of charge if I just brave the family attic.

That said, I like that Rodarte work with retailers like the Gap and Target to make their clothes more accessible and affordable. And they have made some killer, coveted items that I’d snap up if I had the money.

But Newsom and Rodarte seems an interesting match. Though musicians pairing up with designers is nothing new (see also: Cher and Bob Mackie, Madonna and Jean-Paul Gaultier, Courtney Love and Christina Aguilera representing Versace, M.I.A. representing Marc Jacobs), something seems pretty perfect with the alignment here. Perhaps with the three ladies’ talk about collaborative processes, we’ll get to see a Newsom-designed collection, as we did with Chloë Sevigny’s 2008 collection for Opening Ceremony.

This pairing might be read alongside what commercial ventures Newsom has entertained. In an era that has seen many independent artists rely upon advertising and television shows to get their music heard, Newsom’s music has been featured in several places. Often she has elected that her music be used in documentary work. However, The Milk-Eyed Mender’s “Sprout and the Bean” was featured in Victoria’s Secret’s Dream Angels ad campaign. Note that her voice is not heard in this spot.

Or it could be that a dress is just a dress. Which is fine too. But while I’m excited about hearing Newsom’s new album, I’ll have two labels on my mind when it comes out: Drag City and Rodarte.

Carrie Underwood in Theia – I really love this look. Sometimes I get tired of the whole Grecian look,  but then again I love the one-shouldered dress. AND THOSE SHOES! – 4.5

Alicia Keys in Giorgio Armani – The dress is fantastic. And the shoes are okay. The jewelry is a bit much and the hair can go… This look had potential to be a 5, but because of everything else I’m just going to give it a 3.

Leona Lewis in Vivienne Westwood – 2 Vivienne Westwood is great, sure. I’d love to see Leona try some other designers now too. NO to those boots.

Shakira in Versace. 5! I really love this dress. I don’t really like the shoes… but my love for the dress overrules. Shakira looks really great in this dress. It was perfect for her.

Demi Lovato in Jenny Packham – 3.5. I like that Demi went very natural for this look everything from her shoes, to her dress color, to her makeup. It washes her out a little bit, but it’s nice to see her clean up and not look so out there. The dress is okay. The neckline is too much for me.

Selena Gomez in Talbot Runhof. 4. This is a very age-appropriate dress for her. She looks cute!

Kelly Clarkson. 1.5. oh noooo Kelly this dress is so unflattering and is a bejeweled disaster ahh

Kristen Bell in Christian Cota – 4. She looks great! You don’t see a dress like that everyday. Kristen made a midriff showing dress classy instead of trashy.

Nicole Kidman in Balenciaga. I don’t care if it’s Balenciaga…this is so wrong. 1

Edyta Sliwinska – Why so many cutouts? This brings me back to terrible memories of Blake Lively’s dangerous slit dress. 2

Kayle Ewell - This dress is AMAZING! This is something I would wear! 5!

Shaun Robinson. It’s nice. It’s safe. 3

Paula Abdul cleaned up nicely. Usually her red carpet outfits suck really hard, but this is actually nice. I usually don’t like the fish tail either especially when Beyonce has a dress with one, but this is something I wouldn’t mind looking at. 4

Jennifer Lopez in Gucci. 3 Meh Nicky Hilton could probably wear this dress a lot better than you.

An old commercial that I’ve only now come to love. Did not love “Coco Avant Chanel”, but absolutely heart  Jean Pierre Jeunet’s commercial (really, a short film) for Coco’s iconic scent.

Chanel Nº5 is a scent I associate with my mother. She used to wear it when I was younger. As such, it’s a perfume I would never dream of wearing until I’m in my late thirties. For now, my top three scents:

VERSACE Versense

Was browsing through fragrances in Holt Renfrew last summer, and the lady recommended this one after I tried on the Marc Jacobs Splash in Cucumber. Loved it then, love it now. It’s light and refreshing, just the right amount of citrus so that it’s not cloying (for me, anyway). Best to spray it on the clothes you plan on wearing the night before.

PHILOSOPHY Falling In Love

Been wearing this scent for two years, and I fall in love with it every time I use it. It’s sweet (vanilla). It’s floral (jasmine). It’s just absolutely perfect. Doesn’t last all day, but you can buy it in a cute little size that you can stash away in your purse.

LOLITA LEMPICKA Lolita Lempicka

I judge books by their covers, so it’s not really out of character for me to judge perfumes by their bottles too. Lolita Lempicka perfumes come in bottles inspired by whimsy. This scent is a little more potent than the first two. It’s a little sharper, a little sweeter, a lot more magical. Don’t love the other Lolita perfumes as much, but the bottles are just as pretty…

Me thinks that Deepika is trying to revamp her image a bit from sweet to sexy, from girl next door to vixen next door. However, this grey dress is just not doing it in my humble opinion. The dress is trying to be sexy but the bit of fabric near the thigh area is quite distracting. (On an aside, the designer should have kept the dress demure or gone all the way and made it vampy.) The dress wears her rather than she wearing the dress. Furthermore, she kept it safe and put her hair in a safe, predictable school-marm style, where a dress of this caliber would have called for sexy waves. Finally, the shoes and pointy bra (did she borrow Madonna’s?) are just further killing the look. Sorry Deeps, not impressed; go back and try again! If she was going for the look, I’d have put her in this metallic and white, thigh-high slitted, Versace dress that sends the right message of vixen and angel mixed together.

Katsui graduated from Central Saint Martins College after studying at Parsons The New School for Design. Yagi graduated from Doshisha University and Central Saint Martins College.
The brand, mintdesigns was launched in 2001. They have been in Tokyo Collection since ‘03 S/S. The awards they won include the Moet et Chandon New Designer’s Award in 2005. In 2007, mintdesigns garage store opened in Shibuya PARCO. They presented their collection in the 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT THIS PLAY! show. In 2008, they presented the opening show at São Paulo Fashion Week for ‘09 S/S. Both designers currently hold positions as guest professors at the Faculty of Art and Design at Osaka Seikei University. In 2009 they presented their collection at the Milano Salone TOKYO FIBER ‘09.Mint Designs turned out a dainty crop of dresses featuring details such as shimmery stripes, textured fabric and quirky graphics. One frock featured a darling print of tiny Charlie Chaplins, while another showcased circular cutouts along the sides.

Versace Fall/Winter 2009 RTW

The Eighties were referenced all over the fall/winter collections, and what represents the decade of excess more than blue eyeshadow?  But a funny thing happened on the Versace runway.  Models came out in neon dresses, big fluffy hair, and blue shadow to the brows. . . and instead of looking like a bad Dynasty episode, it looked edgy, sexy, and confident.  Ive been rocking the blue shadow all season, and love it.  Just dont ask me to bring back the scrunchies.
