Pink Floyd Edition Converse Shoes Selling Fast

We were contacted by Converse letting us know their special edition Pink Floyd shoes are selling fast. If you haven’t seen them, have a look at the pictures. They sell them in both the Lo-top and Hi-top versions. Our thanks to Converse for letting us know.

I believe that the word-for-word translation claim is a “myth”, at least a translation that is usable. A word-for-word rendering of John 3:16 comes out like this:

For some of the original Gk. words, I could have selected a number of different English words. Which word is the right one to choose? Mileage will vary and context can be a determining factor as well as opinion. An excerpt from Bruce Metzger’s translation group:

…a purely word-for-word approach would be almost unreadable…Mt. 6:9-10 in a word-for-word rendering

Father of us who in the heavens, be holy the name of you;
Come the kingdom of you;
Become the will of you as in heaven and upon earth.

Hopefully you can see that translating is much more complicated than most let on. To rearrange the original wording is normal in translating. To be forced to substitute two, three or four words in place of a word in another language is also normal.

You are walking along the dairy aisle, picking up Yoplait yogurts. You prefer the 99% fat free version, so you load up on some strawberry, some raspberry and some vanilla. The price? All of them priced exactly the same,  59 cents. (Let us ignore the one time promotions they run on one flavor to clear out the stock). After picking a dozen or so 99% fat free version you look up and find Yoplait Whips and it also has almost the same line up of flavors. Price? 79 cents.

1. Why does the price vary across the types of Yogurt (let us call this vertical product line) but not across the flavors within a product line?
2. Does it cost the manufacturer the same to make raspberry and strawberry yogurt? Should the cost difference be reflected in pricing?
3. Do customers value the different flavors differently?
4. Why does the price vary across product lines?
5. Does a marketer stand to gain more profit by doing vertical line extension or by increasing variety within a product line?
6. Can the marketer increase market share by increasing variety within product lines?

In their paper published in Marketing Science( Spring 2006, Vol. 25 Issue 2, p164-174) Stanford GSB professor Michaela Draganska and Kelloggs’ Dipak Jain asked just these questions and found the answers for the rest of us marketers.

We find that consumers value line attributes more than flavor attributes. Given that consumers value line attributes more than flavor attributes,  firms have a lot to gain by pricing their product lines differently whereas they have little to lose from pricing all flavors within a line the same. We also find that the value of a product line is not merely a function of the number of  flavors it includes: The calculated inclusive values indicate that more flavors do not always result in increased utility for consumers and hence higher market shares.

Firms’ profits would not significantly increase if they were to price  flavors within a product line differently. Therefore, the current pricing policy of setting different prices for product lines but uniform prices for all flavors within a line appears to be on target.

What does this mean to marketers? This tells what true versioning means, it is not just changing colors or toppings. Do not chase market share by making minor tweaks, this does not result in  profit increase. Strategy is about making choices. When in doubt about where to invest your R&D and marketing dollars, instead of expanding variety within a product line consider product line extensions.

You need to have Net.Framework 2.0 or above previously installed to run the patch.

Though the patching instructions are within the patch (by clicking the “Read Me” button) and which you must read carefully and strictly follow them before applying the patch, I’m quoting them for your easiest guidance:

Instructions for BitDefender 2010

1. Install BitDefender2010 but {DO NOT RESTART YOUR COMPUTER}. (If already installed, then see Note A below.)

2. Execute the TR (patch) by clicking the “Year 2047″ button and restart your computer.

3. Adjust the BD settings, update, and do a full scan of your computer.

4. To remove the TR (patch from Bitdefender), just click the “Uninstall” button. The uninstall will convert the BD back to a 30-day trial version. (You should uninstall the TR (patch) and restart the computer before uninstalling the BitDefender itself. IF you don’t, BD will generate a bug report.)

Note A: If BD2010 is already installed, then you must install in TR in Windows Safe Mode (F8) using an Administrator account or uninstall BD then repeat the steps above.

In every story there are at least three versions, the independent versions of the parties involved and the truth. Just like in each and every breakup story, his version, her version and the truth. Neither of the versions can constitute the truth, most of the time, but there can also be instances when either one of the versions can also be the truth and sometimes both versions clearly presents the truth. But this reality doesn’t mean that we are liars ‘though we must admit that we did lie even just once, but I digress. This can very well be explained by the fact that we all have our own perceptions regarding things, events, places and even people and that our emotions clouds our better judgment. It could be that for him, she left without explaining the reason why while for her she explained whatever it is that needs to be clarified but the truth is she didn’t explain anything because there is nothing to be explained in the first place ’cause things are clearly spelled right before their very eyes it’s just that it was so damn painful for him to understand. Sometimes we need another person, an independent party to spell out the truth for us but we could also be that person to decipher the truth if only we could, even at a single moment, separate ourselves from what we feel, what we want to believe and what we want to happen. ‘Cause the emotions, feelings and perceptions that we have gets in the way for us to make our objective judgment on things, making us resort to believing in the modified truth. Most of the time, the modified truth is much easier to believe in ’cause it spares us from accepting the bitter reality of things. Modified truths are different from total lies, modified truths are just victims of human judgments and feelings, they are sometimes even used to shield one’s feelings from being hurt, dreams from being shattered, hearts from being totally broken.

The truth is, we are all at one point scared from admitting the whole truth about things because we are vulnerable humans. But we all know that lying is bad per se so we end up with modified truths. But no matter how many versions a story has, as a line from a song goes, “the truth hurts and lies worse”.

But I’m hoping that one day, we’ll be able to decipher the truth together.”

It’s funny that this year has been secretly about versions. a.Version, of course, but also versions of self, past scholarship, re-version, con-version, transgression. Saving the game in a different save slot so you can go back to it later. It’s funny, of course, how things that seemed to be abstract objects from your past life come bubbling up into your actual, present life, isn’t it? That we hear echoes constantly of the things that we once did?

I have been considering for a while how the person I used to be became the person I am now, how more than most people I think I experience a lack of continuity in personal identity, how surprising it is that sometimes old me seeps into the things I say and do now.

I was struggling for a while to come up with a paper topic for this class, and the vagaries of digital life had me digging through the archives of my writing for class (and isn’t this why a.Version is a great idea?) and I stumbled upon the paper I wrote for Judith Becker’s class (about music, ritual, and trance in a variety of cultures) almost three years ago about music and psychedelia and secular ecstatic experiences — their causes and relationship to mental stability. It occurred to me that I had a paper here that could be expanded, added to, that maybe making an archive of my writing about psychedelic religious and aesthetic experience might yield a passable book or dissertation, or something — well, you get the idea.

And also, I hadn’t thought of this paper very much at all. I had thought of the books I read for it in passing at the beginning of the semester because of something someone had said in my present class about psychedelia. I have been working through Julian Jaynes’s book The Origins of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind and it seems really self-evident that Dr. Becker’s research fits into this picture, and that there’s a really great connection here that Jaynes couldn’t have explored.

How odd, I think, that versions and these sorts of past histories should be so important now. (Also, upon further reflection, I think that Dr. Becker was the first person who had me thinking about Orientalism in the academy — she said something to me, in passing, about how she is annoyed at her discipline being called ethnomusicology. Also something about how it’s very hard for musicologists to study Balinese gamelan ritual and dance because of the overwhelming number of Aussie tourists who inundate the islands? — and how that has become a great important thing in my life too.) I think ultimately this has something to do with why I like folk music.

When these commercials first came out, I loved them.  I’ve worked in IT for almost ten years, and the lowest moment for me was the release of Windows Vista.

Which is why the Mac Vs. PC commercials always made me smile – they had a point.  In reality, if I had to deal with issues involving Vista any more than I did, I would have switched to Apple’s operating system (and more expensive equipment) in a heartbeat.

But now, with the release of Windows 7, which is getting reviewed way higher than its predecessor, are these commercials going to be obsolete:

Will they be like The Daily Show with John Stewart in a post-Bush era?  (Still funny, but not as biting…)  Or will Windows 7 fail to impress in the long run, thus providing continual fodder for the mocking ads?

I think the jump ship mentality that Vista wrought has come to an end, and I have had limited interaction with 7 so far.  I have another friend that works at a different level of IT than I do, and he claims to love it (out of 700 pc’s he’s worked on at clients, less than 2% used Vista… or at least thereabout).

So is the campaign still ripe with humor?  Or has something that was The Shit become Just Shitty?  I’m inclined to think Apple’s advertising team needs to go back to the drawing board or whatever high-end technology they have, despite how funny I think John Hodgman is, or how funny Justin Long arguably may be.

One question remains though.  How did they count to Windows 7?

By my count:

1. Windows 3.1
2. Windows 95
3. Windows 98
4. Windows Me
5. Windows XP
6. Windows Vista
7. Windows 7

But Windows 3.1 was Version Three-Point-One.  And what about this Windows 2 that’s mentioned in the commercial above?  That’s either Just Shitty writing, or it’s flat-out Just Shitty.

It is relatively easier to target segments that are static with time – by that I mean, customers will stay in their “assigned segment” if not for their lifetime but for a much longer period. The extreme example is gender as segmentation variable.  A marketer can target the resources accordingly and can measure its effectiveness. But how can a marketer target  customers when at any given time the customer could be in any one of the segments?

I think the Danish word for this is  -Vaelg!  The English word is Versions.

Here is what Scandinavian Airlines does to target its customers,

Sometimes you want comfort, sometimes you want lowest prices and sometimes both. Fly our Business, Economy or Economy Extra – whatever fits your needs best. By the way Vaelg means choose in English

One last point – notice how they do not show any price in these options. This is applying consumer behavior principle of getting customers to commit emotionally before they see the price. This is a pricing tactic that works well with the chosen pricing strategy.

All in all a very good execution by SAS.

A brief recap. An old Betty Boop cartoon by Max Fleischer is an astonishing and surreal piece of work, and happens to feature a Cab Calloway rendition of “St. James Infirmary.” Fleischer made several cartoons featuring jazz works. The 1933 Boop cartoon (considered a classic) features the character Koko the clown — referenced by The White Stripes in their cover of “SJI,” which throws in an extra verse that I believe must have been inspired by the vintage cartoon.

A while ago I started hearing that a new cartoon was in the works. And that it would be produced under the auspices of Preservation Hall, which has been balancing out its deep traditions with new ideas. Details emerged last month: The new animation would feature a version of “SJI” remixed by King Britt, whose work I like a lot.

So the above video is the result. I think it’s pretty great, and the animation is full of nice references and allusions that will demand a separate post … later.

NC Pastor to Burn Bibles

The title says it all…or does it?

Holding a “sin-burning” (as some would call it) is nothing new.  However a Bible is the last thing you would expect to see thrown in the fire!  Nevertheless, as crazy as it sounds that is exactly what one North Carolina church is doing.

The church also plans to burn religious books by such eminent authors as Billy Graham, Rick Warren, John McArthur, James Dobson, Charles Swindoll, John Piper, Chuck Colson, Tony Evans, Oral Roberts, Jimmy Swagart, Franklin Graham , Bill Bright, Tim Lahaye, T.D. Jakes, Benny Hinn, Joyce Myers, Robert Schuller, Mother Teresa , and The Pope!

Tapes and CDs which contain what the pastor considers ungodly music are also on the list.

Needless to say it has sparked a firestorm of controversy.  In fact the church’s website was down for some time, perhaps after being overwhelmed by visitors. But can it really be as bad as it sounds?  After all, they don’t plan to burn every kind of Bible… just everything that is not the King James. Versions like the NIV, ASV, NASB,  etc.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t burn Bibles of any kind.  But I kind of feel bad for the poor old boy… He is trying to draw attention to the issue of Bible versions… a fact that the media glosses over with ease.

What if, next Sunday morning you attended a church where the preacher stood up and, reading from “the Bible” said, “You SON OF A BITCH?“  Well that’s exactly what he would say if he was reading from one of the first editions of the Living Bible.

In 1Samuel 20:30 the King James Version reads: “Thou son of the perverse rebellious woman…” But Kenneth Taylor’s Living Bible says, “…You son of a bitch…”

Being a Christian, I hate to even type that out but that’s exactly what it says.  The editors of that version have since changed the wording because of complaints, but I kid you not, that is exactly what the Living Bible says.

Knowing that, would you still fault him for burning a Living Bible?

I’m not trying to defend Mr. Grizzard’s publicity stunt (which is all this amounts to).  If I was the host of such an event I certainly wouldn’t give an interview to a reporter in my overalls like this Pastor did! I do wish he would have spell checked his flier at least before he sent it out, its littered with misspelled words.

Nevertheless, Christians should be alerted to the issue of Bible versions.

Take the NIV for instance, if you’re an avid reader, you must have noticed that it removes entire verses in some places.

Also in John 1:1 the King James Bible says, “…the Word was God.”  Those of you familiar with the Bible know that “the Word” is a reference to Jesus.

The deity of Christ (Jesus being God in the flesh) is one of the most basic Bible doctrines. But the New World Translation says,”…the Word was a God.”  Thus the NWT, a ‘translation’ put out by the Jehovah Witnesses, denies the deity of Christ.

There are many other examples I could list but time fails me.  I simply want to say that this man who has been slaughtered by the media, might have his heart in the right place even if his methods are questionable.

WWJD?

Again, I wouldn’t do it myself; but when we ask WWJD, let’s not forget we’re talking about the same Jesus who, when He saw the commercialism in the Temple, “…made a scourge of small cords…” and then “…drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers’ money, and overthrew the tables; And said unto them that sold doves, Take these things hence; make not my Father’s house an house of merchandise.” (John 2:15-16)
