I used some Chocolate Brown embossing powder for the dot background and for the sentiment. I hand cut a tie from the green paper. Thought the buttons just added to the shirt and tie feel.

Masculine cards can be so hard. I think I did ok with this one. Funny thing is my dad is not a “tie” kind of guy. Hope he likes it anyway.

270 Seventh Street

Sightglass Coffee Bar & Roastery has already garnered a lot of attention even though they just opened the kiosk three months ago and the “real” coffee bar and roastery are still under construction. It is located in San Francisco’s SoMa neighborhood on 7th Street at Falsom– a short walk from BART Civic Center station.

I visited Sightglass in the morning of a weekday. At first, I was a bit disappointed that the cafe seemed to be closed and there was construction inside the building. A second later, I smelt strong coffee aroma coming from inside so I kept walking down to what was once a driveway to a warehouse. Finally, I spotted the coffee kiosk inside the garage gate.

Sightglass is owned and run by the two brothers who are also the roasters, and apparently the contractors and constructors, of this coffee bar. They were originally from the Pacific Northwest so coffee is in their blood. They helped start Four Barrel Coffee in the Mission, and before that worked at Blue Bottle (which we reviewed here). People from Blue Bottle also help the brothers set up their new cafe. Jared also worked together with Eileen Hassi, the owner of Ritual Coffee, back while they both were in Seattle. All of these confirmed what Eileen told me during an interview with her that the gourmet coffee industry in San Francisco had a healthy “friendly competition.”

I enjoyed my latte while watching Justin and Jared working and supervising the construction of their new coffee bar. Right now they use coffee beans from Verve Coffee Roaster in Santa Cruz, CA, but plan to roast their own beans in a month. (I already spotted a Probat roaster there.) With their past roasting experience at Blue Bottle among other places, the quality of the beans they will offer is likely guaranteed.

I had a conversation with Justin who shared with me their vision. According to him, the building was a paint warehouse so it has gigantic size as compared to the usual neighborhood coffee houses. The ceiling is high and the place is very airy. They will have a mezzanine that people can sit and enjoy their drink. The coffee bar will be in the back while the roasting area will be in the front. They plan to have seating area around the roaster as well. They hope that the construction should be done in a few months. And I am looking forward to going check out the place and tasting their own roasted coffee soon.

Hi Y’all! Thank you for coming this far with me. Perhaps you’ve heard my web radio stat

Hi Y’all!

Thank you for coming this far with me. Perhaps you’ve heard my web radio station “Curt’s Café” and wanted more information about what you heard there. Or, maybe you’ve read my reviews or my column “Browsing the Bins” in Jazz Inside Magazine (formerly JazzImprov). Whatever brought you here, I’m grateful for your time and attention and I’ll try to make it worth your while.

The title of this first post comes from a question I’ve been asked by people online, who hear the music and then assume that my “café” has four walls and a kitchen. Though I do know my way around a stove, the plan is for my café to remain a virtual one.

I’m not fond of talking about myself, but I know that a little exposition is needed in any story, even a blog, so here goes. I’m a native New Yorker (Bronx and Long Island), who has lived in Charlotte, NC since 2000. I’m married, for almost 20 years, to a beautiful, brilliant and creative woman, who is still yet to realize how remarkable she is. We have one son, age nine, who is already a jazz fan and keeps us both on our toes.

My love for jazz started also before I was ten, as curiosity about my older brother’s record collection. It blossomed during my college years, as I worked in the campus music library. It came to fruition in the late ‘90’s as I worked in terrestrial jazz radio and began to write.

Curt’s Café Noir (or Curt’s Café) has been on the air since November 2004. I’d listened to a few Web based radio stations for about a year before that and finally decided to try it myself. It was originally a mix of jazz, soul, classic R & B and Gospel Music. We found the jazz segments to be the most popular, so we went all jazz in 2006.

That’s enough about the past. We “jazz people” spend more time than we should there, which is one of the myriad reasons that jazz is in the fix that it’s in now; but that’s a rant for a future post. Curt’s Café the blog and the web radio station, will devote a major portion of airtime and blog space to the present and future of jazz. Please understand that I love the history of this music and I have a deep, abiding respect for those from the past, who created much of what we still listen to regularly. You will hear much of their work on the station. However, there’s a lot of great music being made today, by artists who deserve to be heard and must be supported by the jazz loving public, if jazz is to have even the hope of a viable future. So half of our prime listening hours are devoted to playing music made solely by living and working jazz artists, and not just those named Marsalis, Burrell and Rollins. I hope that you will listen to these musicians and then support them, by buying their CDs or their legal music downloads. I then hope you will take the next step and go out to see these artists in a live, paying performance. While free concerts are nice for the public, they generally don’t pay the artists enough to even cover expenses. So let’s dig a little bit into our pockets jazz fans, and pay to see the artists that we say we love, so they might see playing jazz as more than just a wallet draining avocation.

For those of you new to the station, we stream 24/7 through Live365.com. In addition to the living artists, we play a good deal of the classics and rare tracks. We also stream programs devoted to special interests, like the catalogs of Blue Note, Verve and Original Jazz Classics records. We have two streams; a commercial stream, for which there is no charge, but like terrestrial radio, does include ads. We also broadcast an ad-free stream, for which listeners pay Live365.com a monthly fee and in return, they hear programming without commercial interruption. The choice is yours. Either way, I promise to bring you great jazz. Our programming is traditional for the most part, but not to the point where you can’t hear the young innovators who are the art form’s future, like Esperanza Spalding, Robert Glasper and Christian Scott. You can listen right now, by clicking on the link on my homepage www.curtscafejazz.com or direct, through Live365 at http://www.live365.com/stations/curtjazz?play

This blog will be an extension of the station. I will post a new article at least once a week. Sometimes freeing my “mind” so “the rest” can follow; sometimes posting an interview or discussion with some of the cool jazz peeps who I think you’ll find interesting. Additionally, I’ll post short, but useful CD reviews, that will always be candid but never cruel. Several times a week I will keep you up to date on new tracks that have been added to the playlists and, in a nod to my pop radio origins, a list of the most popular tracks currently heard on Curt’s Café. Where possible, I’ll also provide links to my past reviews and articles in JazzImprov and Jazz Inside.

Well, now that we’ve met, I hope you won’t be a stranger and that you’ll visit often. Believe me, I’ve got a lot on my mind about jazz and I plan to share a lot of it with you in this forum. I don’t promise that you’ll always agree with me, but I hope that you’ll find it interesting enough to keep reading. I also hope that this won’t be a one way conversation and that you’ll share your thoughts and opinions with me as well. Feel free to leave your ”comments” after each post. Many of us met on Twitter, so let’s all feel liberated by having more than 140 characters to express ourselves.

Thanks for stopping by. I’ll see you next time, until then, as always, the jazz continues…

If they post blogs in Heaven, Mom and Dad, I love you and I hope you liked this. Say “hi” to “Dr.” Woods for me.

Ah, time for a little nostalgia. I well remember this from my student days – it came out in 1971 on A&M.

The title track really is a little lame, though it’s nice to hear Quincy singing. The real fun starts with Cast Your Fate To The Wind and a classic Eric Gayle guitar solo. Mr Jones was already busy building up fabulous personnel lists on his records, and the soloists on this disc include Toots Thielemans, Hubert Laws, Freddie Hubbard, Milt Jackson and Jim Hall. Oh, and Bill Cosby gets a vocal spot on the deliriously stupid Hikky-Burr.

The stand-out tracks are the original Jones theme tunes, Ironside and Theme From The Anderson Tapes – just check out Freddie’s solo on Ironside – and while the version here of What’s Going On might not initially seem to add much to Marvin Gaye’s original, it all kicks off on the hard swinging outro, a masterful arrangement with strong solos and an ace massed strings section inspired by Toots’s harmonica line.

The whole shebang ends with a six minute, 38 second history of blues guitar styles from “Roots to Fruits” in which Gayle, Hall, Thielemans and Joe Beck do their business.

For those who don’t own the rose-tinted glasses of nostalgia, this disc is still worth hearing for Quincy’s glorious production values pre-MJ, for the great electric piano and rhythm sound, and for those sweet solos from Laws, Hubbard et al.

After I’d come back from meeting with my lawyer and was at work working away at my computer creating a webinar to help teachers understand how to deal with challenging classroom situations, I had a realization: I have never felt like I’m an adult–at least not the adult I’d considered adults to be when I was growing up. But lately, I’ve been doing more and more things they’ve done and a second revelation really hit me: I must be one.

Major landmarks key to adulthood

Grown-up Job: Check. I’m the Manager of a national book retailer and distributor–this in an industry I have been employed in for more than a decade. Before this, I was Program Director for a school…and before that, a teacher–pretty adult sounding professions if you ask me.

Not Young Age: Check. I turned 35 on October 25th. Unless you’re in your 60s or above, you just can’t call someone my age a young person anymore. It’s 5 years before 40, a number that most definitely shreaks adulthood. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t begrudge my age at all…except for an increasing number of lines by my eyes.

Ginormous Debt & Assets: Check. My partner and I just bought our very first place–a condo, which is about 329% more expensive than the second-most expensive item we’ve bought. Me? I am a homeowner paying a mortgage!?

So does 35 + Condo = Adult? Only if it means I can keep being my youthful, quirky self amidst the responsible person I need to be.

Not the best of days but anytime you’ve got people giving their lives to Jesus, there’s not much you can complain about.

We had a brief power outage this morning during set-up time which delayed things a bit and then we had a cable connector go bad on my mic which meant Andy had to do some early morning solidering work.

We had two of our teens running projection and lights today and both did a great job. Well done Ben and Dustin!

As always the worship team did an excellent job…both crowds seemed to really be into the music today!

I re-did the message on Monday, which I’m glad I did…still not one of my best but I think the point was clear…don’t be just a consumer, become a contributor.

I’m glad this series is over…not because I didn’t like it, but because I’m really excited about the Maverick series which starts next week.

I got to see a little bit of the stage design changeover that the team was doing this afternoon and it’s going to be awesome!

During the 1st Experience announcement time I kept getting tongue tied. I couldn’t figure out if I wanted to say, “the dictionary definition” or the “definition in the dictionary says”. My mind couldn’t figure it out so I kept saying, “the defionary”.

The more I tried to get it right the harder it got…finally I just gave up.

I met a great couple after the first Experience, who just moved here from Hawaii, who get what we’re all about.

They loved United and realized it’s not about making them happy but reaching out to those who are far from God.

I attribute this great attitude to their former pastor when they lived in Virginia Beach.

He’s a friend of mine by the name of Vince Antonucci. Vince is passionate about reaching out to his community and just took a big step of faith by leaving his church to start a brand new one on the Las Vegas Strip.

Thanks Vince for such an awesome job of teaching and modeling for people that it’s not about what we want, but it’s all about sharing the good news of Jesus with others.

Speaking of…make sure you invite lots of people for the new Maverick series…I think people will be surprised by the fresh look at Jesus we’ll be taking.

Be there…be there early…and don’t forget to sit up front!

I’ll be posting the final Reality Check video later in the week…great job by Brian and Aaron in making these happen!

Ok time for a quick nap before heading back over to the church for our annual congregational meeting…come on out to hear the exciting things we have in store for 2010!

Scary. Looking at my calendar I realize that the next IVSA event is scheduled for November 9th! So,

Scary. Looking at my calendar I realize that the next IVSA event is scheduled for November 9th! So, before I get a glut of new wine notes to comment here, I will go back to those I had in the September event. And since I already posted notes on the whites I enjoyed, let’s now visit the tintos I found memorable. You may notice that mostly I am covering Italian wines but given the size of the IVSA event and the number of products (and the number of people you stop by to say hi and chat) there was little room for anything else.

• Let’s start with one of my favorites of that busy evening. Enoteca Bacco brings a truly delicious Negroamaro varietal, the 2006 Verve IGT from Salento. Pure expression of fruit, direct and ample, with dark overtones and really fun to drink. Not surprisingly, a previous incarnation of this wine, the Verve 2004, collected gold medals left, right and center. Battle the incoming November blues with Verve matching grilled blue fish like mackerel, sardines or spicy dishes (click on links for recipes). Just under 30 dollars, this listed product is available at LDB stores.

• Tempus Malbec 2007. Under 18 dollars, I fully enjoyed this uncomplicated, fruity, filling Malbec brought to us by MKR Importers. A no brainer for roasted beef, grilled meats, sausage in a bun with friends, etc. Just make sure you don’t eat your friends. Ha ha.

• When I had the Anghelos IGT 2006 I did understand the reason for the name: Angelic. I recommend this wine with absolutely NO reservations to those who enjoy a balsamic nose followed by a meaty, fleshy chunk of fruity acidity and elegant tannins that do not let go. Cabernet Sauvignon, Montepulciano and Sangiovese are blended in this superb broth hailing from the Marche region. Soft enough to accompany a Pasta Fagioli (pasta and beans in tomato sauce) but will stand up to an Osso Bucco. Wine Quest importers hit it right on the nose with this vino tinto. Under 40 dollars, this is the kind of wine you want to kick off the cool part of the year in full form.

• Fontanabianca means “white fountain”, which is the name of the winery that makes the Sori Burdin 2004 Barbaresco. This broth is potenza (potence) in the full meaning of the term. Nebbiolo grapes in grand style, with a tremendous aromatic profile and an equally tremendous body and tannic structure. Robert Parker, in his flowery-paralegal style calls this wine “authoritative”. I don’t know how a wine can be authoritative but I surely like the adjective here. Close to 90 dollars, granted not a wine for everyday consumption, but make sure you have a bottle around for that special occasion. And give me a shout when you do; I’d love to have this tinto again.

•Di Majo Norante is a producer that always delivers quality at affordable prices, without compromising the quality and more importantly, the sense of terroir. Their Sangiovese and Ramitello are good examples of this, but here I want to mention the Prugnolo del Molise IGT 2004. A delicious, easygoing yet flavorful Sangiovese. Light and playful but balanced and structured enough to be taken seriously. This product, brought by Style Wines retails for less than 22 dollars.

•The last two wines are both represented by Liquid Art Fine Wines. The Tenuta Sette Ponti ‘Crognolo’ IGT 2006 is a Sangiovese Merlot blend from Toscana. At around 40 dollars a bottle, it merited a 92 pt score by Wine Spectator (08/31/08). Full bodied, concentrated, tannic, warm, with cherry and earthy aromas and flavors, this is a delicious, powerful wine.

I closed the night with the Domaine de Cristia Chateauneuf-du-Pape AC, 2006. I knew it would be my last tasting of the night. The lights had already flickered off a couple of times and the Liquid Art reps were already putting their gear away. I could not but ask for a second pouring, being late and feeling like I deserved a break. I savored every drop of the Cristia. Elated and in awe, I only jotted down

depth suavidad elegance long red fruit rocks beautiful alcohol integration A

Enough said.

Hasta la proxima.

The Crusaders: Images (Blue Thumb/Verve 060251995710) Maybe because it was the first disc I heard by

The Crusaders: Images (Blue Thumb/Verve 060251995710)
Maybe because it was the first disc I heard by the revamped Jazz Crusaders after they removed the J-word from their name, maybe because a good friend gave me the LP, or maybe because I associate it with happy times in a new home way back in 1978, but this has always been my favourite Crusaders album.

It’s just so cheerful and upbeat, with a light-stepping funk groove throughout. The oh-so-simple but oh-so-clever drumming of “Stix” Hooper, the bell-clear, unmistakeable electric piano sounds of Joe Sample (should he be nicknamed “Tinkle”?) and the sinuous sax lines of Wilton Felder (“Reeds”?) are provided by what by this time are the Crusaders proper. But the extra musicians in the band are just as crucial here. Practically joined at the hip to “Stix” is “Pops”, bassist Robert Popwell, but the real cream on this tasty trifle is guitarist Billy Rogers (Chops?). His fills and wiry solos provide some of the album’s greatest joys.

Of course the tunes are vital, too, hooks as catchy as you will find anywhere in the 1970s, and including Felder’s seriously strutting Bayou Bottoms, Hooper’s graceful Marcella’s Dream, and the lovely front and end pieces by Sample, Fairy Tales and Snowflake.

I guess without music like this there would have been no trip-hop, no Bugge Wesseltoft, perhaps no Yellow Jackets, certainly not the plethora of Fender Rhodes-led, cheesy, retro, sample-laden, jazz-funk winebar soundtracks for the ’80s, ’90s and ’00s. Unlike the pompous excess of some of the jazz fusion greats of the ’70s (Return to Forever come to mind) this music still sounds remarkably fresh and undated.

Or is my nostalgia dulling the critical faculties? No, I dont’ think so.

I’m a poor college student

Well I don’t really make much money

The economy is in the CRAPPER right now

You just can’t really understand my situation – time are just real tough

Maybe later

I’m sure those who HAVE will make the difference

As soon as I “win the lottery”

I’m sure we have all either uttered or listened to some form or fashion of the above statements. I know that talking about our “giving” is for the most part taboo since it seems EVERYONE knows that God’s Word says - “don’t let your left hand know what your right hand is doing” - in regards to giving to those in need.

But I’m about to break with tradition – and for what I believe is a VERY WORTHY CAUSE! I try to make a habit of not asking people to do things that I myself would not be willing to do. So what I’m about to ask – YEP YOU GUESSED IT – I JUST DID!

I “CHIPPED IN” – I became a Verve Venture Capitalist and now I’m asking anyone and everyone to do the same. My buddy VINCE and a whole gang of people are doing something AWESOME IN LAS VEGAS and they NEED ME – and YOU – and YOU – and yes even you there with no job and the rent coming due (okay so maybe that’s a lil harsh but I think you get my point – they need people that may have needs themselves to STEP UP AND DO SOMETHING HUGE – SOMETHING BIGGER THAN EACH ONE OF US INDIVIDUALLY)

So please take like 5 minutes – go watch the video on this post – and read it and then DARE TO CHIP IN! I am FULLY CONVINCED you won’t regret it!

And if you are all HARD CORE about that whole – “not letting the left hand know what the right hand is doing” – well great – then let BOTH HANDS CHIP IN and give double the amount – IT WILL BE OUR LITTLE SECRET – I promise I won’t tell!
