After the repairs that Mr. Scott effected to the navigation system of the Doghouse of Justice, I had

After the repairs that Mr. Scott effected to the navigation system of the Doghouse of Justice, I had hoped to be able to navigate it as expertly as I did the original version which was, sadly, destroyed by dinosaurs last year. However, it appears that something in the circuitry still is not working properly. It has returned me to the correct place, but nowhere near the correct time …

Detecting some activity in a nearby building, I sneak inside, hoping to find someone who can tell me when I am; but I inadvertently crash some sort of royal gala, drawing the ire of one individual and the admiration of another.

Later, the Princess invites me to tea, where I innocently suggest we go for walkies, not realizing that the Princess has never been out on her own before.

In the plaza, we meet a friendly gentleman who buys the Princess her first ice cream cone. Sadly, I do not get any.

Afterwards, the gentleman suggests we go scooting. I never knew that humans engaged in this behavior — this will make a fascinating addition to the anthropology course I teach at the university!

Unfortunately I soon realize that i misinterpreted the type of scooting that was intended, once again illustrating the difficulties inherent in trying to understand an alien culture. This is a completely different activity from what I expected, less fun and, once the Princess takes the handlebars, much more dangerous.

We soon arrive at a local attraction, a large wall engraving that is evidently worshiped by the locals as some sort of greedy and vengeful god.

Unfortunately, like Cassandra, my predictions go unheeded.

After dropping our friend off at the local emergency room, the Princess and I return to the piazza for more ice cream, where we say our goodbyes.

Then, suddenly, from out of nowhere, a bizarre visitor appears!

Who is this strange character? How does he know my name? And where did he find a DeLorean? I will find the answer to these questions — because I am Dennis the Vizsla, and I never give up.

The brekkie here is belter, €5 for as much as you want. I had a big plate of bacon and scrambled egg

The brekkie here is belter, €5 for as much as you want. I had a big plate of bacon and scrambled eggs, some cereal, a croissant and 2 glasses of orange juice. I also made four rounds of toast and whacked some cheese and ham in them for my lunch later. €5 for 2 meals, jobs a good ‘n.

I’m now on route to Pontedera, I know it’s quite sad but I’m pretty excited about seeing the Piaggio Museum It’s free admission ‘n all.

I only spent an hour there but I enjoyed it immensely, there’s some right beauts and rarities on display. There’s also some proper shockers.

Amazingly, Jukka spent more than me in the shop and he’s not even a fan. A quality Vespa bag for €38 was his purchase while I spent €13 on a little notepad, magnet and 2 very small scale models (Primavera ET3 and GS 150 both scooters I hope to own one day, or slight variations of anyway). Actually, I think I may already have at least one of those models somewhere already, so a bit of a numpty purchase really.

We are just on our way to Pisa now to checkout that tower that Clark Kent is always messing about with, see.

Man, I’m absolutely knackered. This evening I plan to relax and have a swim and a sauna and do a bit of planning for the next week or so. Then hopefully an early night. My intentions rarely work out though.

Pisa was not bad, the city itself is pretty average but the Cathedral is nice and the tower is, well, weird. I looked at it for 10 minutes just thinking, well why hasn’t that fallen over then. We didn’t bother going up, at €15 they can do one.

Ravioli al pomodoro was my tea tonight from the hostel, pretty nice but again not enough to fill my belson. That’s why pizzas are so tempting as they are relatively cheap and get the job done. I can’t wait for my breakfast already.

I did manage to go for a swim in the end, that’s the first time I have swam in years literally. I done 100 lengths using front crawl (I can’t do breast-stroke!), though I should probably point out it was no way near a full size pool.

Then I had a Turkish bath (finally) and a sauna afterwards. I don’t think either of them were as hot as they should be though, plus there was a large group of loud Americans ruining the mood. I’ll give it another go tomorrow probably.

So there has been a few more changes to my travel plans. I want to visit Verona so I am going to spend 3 nights in Venice after all and then use 1 of them for a day-trip to fair Verona. To accomodate this I’ve chopped off Monaco and Montpellier, though I’ve also added an extra night in Nice so I can do Monaco as a day-trip too.

Right I’m just going to try and find a hostel for Venice and figure out if it’s easy to get to San Marino and back from Florence in a day, then it will be time for some much needed shut-eye.

A day-trip to Sienna is likely on the cards tomorrow folks.

Amazingly, I made my way over to the Vatican this morning without getting lost once. Not bad conside

Amazingly, I made my way over to the Vatican this morning without getting lost once. Not bad considering it’s the complete opposite side of my map and I encountered several one way streets where I wanted to turn.

I need to reiterate what I said last night though, these roads are chaos! The riding style for 2 wheels is completely different. In the UK you are taught to dominate your area, so act like a car and drive in the centre of the road to discourage cars from over/undertaking you in the same lane. Here sccoters and motorbikes just fill any channel or gap instantly and filter at mental speeds, you just have to go with it. The thing is you can ride like that but from personal experience I know you won’t get away with it forever.

Don’t get me started on roundabouts. I think my new tactic for them might just to be close my eyes, it can’t be any more deadly surely?

Is there any point in mentioning that I’ve been blitzed by mosquitoes once more? Probably not.

St. Peter’s Basilica is ruddy massive. It’s also very grand and beautifully built. I was going to go into la cupola (upstairs!) too but the queues were huge.

Next on my list was the Vatican Museums and thanks to my trusty ISIC I got in for €8 rather than the normal €14. A lot of people do this on a guided tour and it does make sense to do it that way but I think that would have been around €40 (that’s what someone told me they paid) and it doesn’t make that much sense.

I still got a lot out of it just going round by myself, I was in there for a good 2 hours. All I can say is crikey, there’s some amount of money gone into the Catholic church over the centuries, the collection they have is most extensive and impressive.

The Sistine Chapel (which is part of the Vatican Museums) is pretty amazing but I can’t say I was blown away by it. I think it’s because a lot of churches I’ve been to in the last few months have had similar frescos but not quite on the same scale. Still, there’s no getting away from the fact that it is very impressive.

After that I nipped over to the Pantheon again to see the inside, very nice too.

My guide-book reckons The Colosseum closes at sun-down. Nope, is actually 15:30, which is round about when I got there. It was still worth the trip though as I found thr view from the day better than in the evening.

Then I still had 2 or 3 hours to kill before I had to hand in the Vespa so I just cruised around randomly. It’s quite liberating to ride about in Rome as there don’t really seem to be any rules and people just do what they want, but because everyone does it there’s no need for road rage or anything. I got right in to it and was darting in an out with the best of them and giving out the occasional toot on the horn (though that’s more of a Neopolitan thing to do). I felt like stopping for a cappuccino, I don’t even like cappuccino. Like I said though, if you ride like this all the time your chances of coming a cropper rise significantly. There are a lot of Vespas with dented side panels knocking about.

It then occured to me to go back to the Vatican to try and see the upstairs of St. Peters, so I did. I queued and got in but by the law of St. Sod it was the only part of the basilica that had already closed.

I’ve made another travel plan decision, I’m pretty sure I’m not going to go to Cuba now. As much as I’d like to the money would be better used to set myself up in New Zealand. I’ve no idea how long it will take me to get a job so if I still have a few quid in the bank it will take some of the pressure off me. So I plan to be back in England for all of December and will then look to get a flight to Auckland in early January.

Not going to Cuba should also mean I can get a new camera, that Samsung thing I got in Vienna is a waste of space and the Sony one I broke in Bratislava wasn’t much better. I’ll be looking to get something maybe not quite at SLR levels but at least capable of taking a bloody picture at night!

Hiring the Vespa was definitely the best way to cram everything into a day. The only thing I really wanted to see that I’ve missed was the interior of The Colosseum so that’s not bad.

I’ve now ridden 2-strokes in places as far apart as the Orkney Isles, Boston in The States, The Isle of Wight and now Rome. I hope to add to this on a large scale in the future.

I think today’s efforts have warranted a great big dirty pizza so TTFN.

One last thing, the pizza I had was the best value meal I’ve had in Rome so if you come this way yourself lonely pilgrims, you may want to drop in at Taverna Pretoriana. They give you a 10% off card if you speak to them and there’s no service, cover or ‘linen fee’. €10 for a massive pizza, a beer and some bread.

I slept not too badly last night considering. I tried spreading myself out along 3 or 4 seats but th

I slept not too badly last night considering. I tried spreading myself out along 3 or 4 seats but that wasn’t working out very swell, too lumpy and narrow (that’s the seats, not me). So I shifted my blow-up pillow and sleeping bag to behind the back row of the seats and slept on the floor (which wasn’t dirty and I wasn’t touching it directly anyway). Not amazingly comfortable but I was tired so like on the couchette coming from Macedonia the other night, I slept anyway.

I was initially told when I got my ticket that the ferry would get in at 09:00am. So I presumed this to be local (Italian) time (like it would be for a flight). Last night I double checked with reception and he told me that it actually gets in at 08:30am Greek time. Greece is an extra hour ahead so this would be 07:30am Italian. It actually got in at 08:05am local. Confused? Join the club.

Before disembarking, I sneaked a quick ham and cheese omlette in, €4.

So, Italy and with it country number 23. This is the nation I’ve been looking forward to most, there’s just so much to see and I’m only going to be tackling a small fraction of it. One thing I do need to get on when I get net access, is to check the Serie A fixtures, would be great to take a game in.

Right now though I need to figure out where one would find Bari’s main bus station, or at worse, train station. Though I already know that there isn’t a train I can take until about 5 hours off, I hope to be well on my way to Naples by then.

It was well sign-posted to the train station (I know I wanted a bus but I thought there would be a good place to find info) up until the point where the signs stopped without said station and a road splitting 3 ways. I made my best guess and 10 minutes later with a couple more turns I stumbled upon the station and the tourist info point outside it.

The bus takes about the same amount of time as the train but at €19, it’s nearly half the price, plus it leaves an hour earlier (at 12:50, getting in at 16:30). So that was an easy decision.

So as I’ve got the best part of 3 hours to kill before my bus, I may as well have a look at Bari. From what I’ve seen so far (I’ve pretty much done 2 hours walking already, bag ‘n all) it seems quite interesting. I’ve seen a sign for the a football stadium (Bari’s I presume) so I might go and have a look at that.

I’ve been putting my extremely basic Italian into practise this morning. ‘Mi scusi’, ‘Parla Inglese?’, ‘Buongiorno’, ‘Grazie’ and ‘Ciao’ have all had an airing, I’ve even been on the receiving end of a couple of ‘Pregos’. I expect when I get to Naples it won’t be long before I get a couple of ‘Consigliere’ job offers. You may well say but you’re not Italian, two words for ya: Tom Hagen.

Long dark hair with big sunglasses and a scarf appears to be the Italian look this October, male or female.

There’s Vespas absolutely everywhere, I’ve seen some right crackers. I’m yet to spot a Lammy though. I can’t wait to get back on my scoot, though December isn’t exactly going to be the ideal month to do it.

There are actually signs for 2 different football stadiums and I’m not sure which is the right one, plus I’ve been heading the way one of them says for quite a bit with no luck. They’re quite vague directionally and there’s no indication of distance so I’m giving up on that plan. In fact I’m just going to go and sit and wait for the bus now. 4 hours is enough of walking around with my bag on in a busy city, not to mention the fact that there appear to be a lot of Italians who dawdle and are spacially unaware, a poor combo.

I remembered why I don’t use the GPS on my phone, it appears to only track you when you have input the direction query while you previously had data access (like I did for the cinema the other night). So unless I pay the ridiculous roaming fees (seriously scandalous, iPhones are only usable data wise when abroad, for the rich) it’s no good for on the fly when you’re lost.

On the bus now, I can’t wait to get to the hostel. Athens feels like weeks ago.

Strangely, the fella from Adelaide sat next to me on the bus has been in my hostel room at both Sofia and Skopje.

On the way into Naples you go right past Mount Vesuvius very cool (or hot even). You can see little clouds of smoke coming out the ground for quite a while before you get there, is that normal? I’m going to try and get up there tomorrow.

That Australian bloke was going to the same hostel as me and I know this doesn’t sound very nice, but he gets on my nerves. Everything you say he is pretty much contrary to and he’s just quite aggravating in general. Like he asked about 4 people the way to the hostel even though we had pretty simple directions to follow then he asked me if I was in a hurry as I was walking slightly fast and missing the city, well after about 30 hours straight travelling and with a large backpack on, I thought getting to the hostel for a shower and that might be a decent idea. He still just dripped about so I walked at my own pace withot paying heed to where he was and arrived at the hostel 5 or 10 minutes earlier than him.

He’s the same bloke I avoided having to go exploring with in a ‘group’ in Skopje because I knew he would rub me up the wrong way, it’s always best to just try and stay clear of people who have that affect on you I reckon.

My first impressions of Naples, complete chaos. What I was expecting really.

The Hostel of the Sun where I’m staying seems pretty good, well apart from the older America guy in my room sat talking to himself (I mean properly as well), I don’t think he’s noticed I’m here. I’ve just informed him of my presence and I think he’s a touch embarrassed.

Nothing much on the agenda tonight as I’m reet banjaxed. A big fat authentic pizza might be worked in though.

As it happens I didn’t get the early night or the real deal pizza as I was up until very late sorting out technical problems with the blog. They’re finally resolved now so I’ll say goodnight, apart from one last thing. I’ve changed my route yet again, the travelling has been pretty hard going lately and I’m not getting enough time to relax or enjoy places and I really want to savour Italy. Also after looking in a bit more detail at distances between destinations, I think it would still have been a bit challenging to fit it all in. So here’s the latest:

You know how there are those times when you like a really good TV show and the person you love likes

You know how there are those times when you like a really good TV show and the person you love likes a truly awful TV show? Well, I recently had one of those moments. Tom and I like most of the same shows. Basically, shows that are funny. However, Tom likes EVERY show on the DIY network and I am not a fan. He also likes any show EVER made about Alaska. Alaska. I don’t even know what I would DO in Alaska. I’m really worried that he’s trying to plan a trip there. We’re going to Oregon for a family reunion next year. What if he wants to just zip on up to Alaska and haul over some ice roads? I’m not ready for that. Honestly, I don’t think Tom’s ready for that either, no matter how much TV studying he does.

I don’t care what you say. This look does not say “Holly Fabulous.” End of story ICE ROADS.

Tom’s other favorite show that I can’t get into is Sons of Anarchy on FX. It’s a show about the lives of a close-knit outlaw motorcycle club. Swoon. Notice that the description doesn’t say “a comedy about the misadventures and pitfalls of a close-knit, bumbling outlaw motorcycle club.” That would just be too awesome. The show does have one saving grace, the matriarch of the group, Gemma, played by Katey Sagal, who will forever be known to me as Peggy Bundy. Gemma, however, differs from Peg in that she would never be married to a shoe salesman, her son seems to have an active sex life with real women, and Gemma will knock a ho upside the head with a skateboard if that’s what it comes down to. Both characters have really awesome hair, though.

Gemma Teller Morrow. Abilities include planning, scheming, manipulating, and having cool hair. Basically my hero.

Even though Gemma is the HBIC of a gang that primarily makes money by illegally importing weapons and selling them to drug gangs, she doesn’t let that interfere with her softer side. She’s a really caring grandmother to her new bey-bey grandson. In fact, in just the last episode when the doctor suggested she try a soy formula to help with the baby’s digestive issues, Gemma very practically, yet caringly, responded that she didn’t want to turn him into a “vegan pussy.” Gah. Doesn’t that doctor know anything? Vegans and outlaw motorcycle gang members just don’t mix! Everybody knows that.

While this show has the potential to be a really good influence on my hair, it’s proving to be a really bad influence on Tom. He actually asked me if he could start a bike gang. Of course I said yes, because how cool would it be to see Tom and the gang donning their khakis and setting out to do something really shady, like drink Mountain Dews in a Texaco parking lot? So we went through a list of his friends who could join his gang. There were a few we decided would need to be relegated to side cars because we’re not sure they have the experience or the street cred to ride their own bikes.

Y’all be back by dinner!

Tom told me they were going to meet in the basement, for pep rallies before rides I guess, and that I should STAY OUT because they were going to be doing really dangerous things like punching each other. Dear God, I foresee someone breaking a hip at their first meeting. My suggestion is that they focus their efforts on being a really fierce Vespa gang. Everyone can have their own Vespa, they can sticker up some awesome helmets or make cool leatherish vests, and call themselves The Shui Fengs. Ya know, like they’re really gonna get in people’s spaces. I think this has real potential. We decided that Gavin has to wait until he’s 10 to join the scooter gang though. That just seems like good parenting.

<img src="http://nakedinthefastlane.wordpress.com/files/2009/09/2452794877_a5d7ab91e61.jpg?w=300" alt="Where's purple?

I have a thing for bicycles. I absolutely love them. Almost as much as I love Vespas. I think it goes back to when I was a student in Paris. There were so many chic Parisian women riding their bicycles to and fro and I wanted to be just like them. Women in full regalia – skirts, dresses, high heels. Looking absolutely fabulous. You don’t see people like that here.

I loved this photo from The Sartorialist today — he had a whole post devoted to bicycles!

Every now and then I get a wild hair to spray paint my bike some really pretty candy color. Check out these bikes from Electra. Aren’t they gorgeous? And the Alexander Girard designs?!?!? ACK!

The Hostel (Pfefferbett Hostel) I’m in is ace in every way except there is no kitchen which is

The Hostel (Pfefferbett Hostel) I’m in is ace in every way except there is no kitchen which is a bit of a pain when I’m here for 4 nights.

So I had a quality salami pizza last night at a little gaff called La Cucina in the Pfefferbett area. The thing was huge and bloody gorgeous, only 5 Euros for it too. What I would like to happen is a repeat of the same for the next 3 nights but then that’s not exactly what one would consider a balanced diet is it.

Crazy Oscar is the fella working behind the hostel counter, he’s a full-on type of guy and never stops talking about something utterly off the wall while getting on with whatever task is in hand. A nice chap and certainly preferable to Oscar the grouch which it’s not always that uncommon to get in these places.

I know I’ve alluded to this many times already and it probably holds about as much interest for you as a Colleen Rooney (are they married? Who cares actually) column, but proper geared Vespas (not just PXs either) are everywhere in this country, it’s great. Well done Germans.

I’m about to go on a completely free tourist walk of Berlin, not generally my sort of thing but it covers loads of things I was interested in seeing anyway and did I mention it’s free. It’s provided by Sandemans and supposed to be one of the best in the Europe apparently, though they are hardly like to say that it’s bobbins are they. Seeing some of the sights in this manner will give me more time to explore the large amount of alternative stuff the city has on my own.

I’m making more of an effort to include the actual names, websites etc. of places I talk about as if some of my stuff is gonna be on the Lonely Planet site it may as well be of use to any fellow travellers foolish enough to click through to it. Here’s how my blog comes through on the LP pages, in this case, for Ottawa.

Most annoyingly, I’ve just discovered that I’m missing my iPhone earphones. Some times I’ll listen to stuff before going to sleep as I did last night. So in the morning they will generally be loose in the bed but I can’t find them anywhere. The other 5 people in my room all checked out this morning so I reckon they must have fell on the floor and one of them snarffled them either by accident or on purpose, whichever it was makes little difference to me. Scoundrels.

The tour was excellent, I’d recommend it profusely to anyone, especially if you like your history. The guide was a well to do and slightly eccentric St Andrews student who presented things in an over the top thespian sort of style, but it worked and she clearly knew her stuff. A tip was optional but it was one of those kind of situations where it’d be awkward not to and I didn’t mind anyway as she was good, so 5 Euros it was.

Even at 3 and a half hours long it was pretty action packed. Here’s a selection of what we took in: Brandenburg Gate, The Reichstag, The Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe (also known as the Holocaust Memorial), Hitler’s underground bunker spot (where he spent the last few weeks of his life as the Russians closed in on Berlin), Goering’s Luftwaffe offices (later to became the main goverment office of the GDR and post Cold War a tax office!), a small stretch of the Berlin wall, Checkpoint Charlie (actually a tourist trap re-creation of), Bebelplatz (where years prior to World War II the Nazis had burned 25,000+ books of basically anything not the Nazi ideology) and the Fernsehturm (iconic TV Tower Eastern bloc balls up).

The Holocaust Memorial (also known as The Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe) was quite errie and impressive, it’s quite hard to visualise but it’s basically a large series of blocks at different heights creating a bit of a maze. It doesn’t sounds like much but I liked it. The architect (Peter Eisenman) leaves the thinking behind the structure ambiguous for you to interpret what it means yourself but he has said he was inspired by the Jewish Cemetery in Prague and having been there also, I can see a connection.

I did go back to The Reichstag after the tour to have a look at the interior but there were huge queues even at 20:30, I’ve still got 3 days here though so there will be time again.

By this time I realised I’d not ate for donkeys and was starving so I went over to The Sony Centre (which I’d planned on visiting anyway). It’s just an entertainment complex with restaurants and a big cinema, but the building is really modern and unusual. I had a look at a few healthy and different options but then I was that hungry and tired that a disappointing meal would have made me want to lock myself in Hitler’s bunker. Wings and ribs with fries.

With regards to the picture, obviously some Berliners think it funny to take a pish in a Dunkin Donuts cup, put the straw back in (as if to suggest help yourself) and leave it at the side of a U-Bahn entrance. If I’m honest, so do I.

You might start reading it and think “Psh, I’m white and I don’t like that…” but the deeper into the site you get, the more you realize you do like these things and/or you know someone who does! It’s quite eye opening and hilarious.

Also, you don’t have to be white to get it, just have to have white friends.

Bob Marley, Grammar, New Balance, Sushi, Having Black Friends, Vespas… The list goes on. Don’t take my word, fucking go already!!!!!!
