<p>Disk2vhd is a utility that creates VHD (Virtual Hard Disk &#8211; Microsoft’s Virtual Machine disk format) versions of physical disks for use in Microsoft Virtual PC or Microsoft Hyper-V virtual machines (VMs). The difference between Disk2vhd and other physical-to-virtual tools is that you can run Disk2vhd on a system that’s online. Disk2vhd uses Windows’ Volume Snapshot capability, introduced in Windows XP, to create consistent point-in-time snapshots of the volumes you want to include in a conversion. You can even have Disk2vhd create the VHDs on local volumes, even ones being converted (though performance is better when the VHD is on a disk different than ones being converted). </p>
<p>The Disk2vhd user interface lists the volumes present on the system: </p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>Daveberm on <a href="http://clusteringformeremortals.com/">Clustering For Mere Mortals</a> had did some good effort to test new Dynamic VHD files in windows 2008 R2, With the release of Windows Server 2008 R2, <a href="http://blogs.msdn.com/tvoellm/archive/2009/08/05/what-s-new-in-windows-server-2008-r2-hyper-v-performance-and-scale.aspx">one of the enhancements</a> was improving the performance of dynamic VHD files. Prior to R2, writes to dynamically expanding VHD files could be 3x slower than writes to a fixed size VHD file due to limited meta data caching. Overall, Microsoft is claiming the performance of dynamic VHD files vs. fixed size VHD files is almost identical.</p>
<p>Pass-through disks are another option when configuring a Hyper-V VM. According to my <a href="http://flash.disasterrecoverycloud.com/Results.csv">results</a>, the performance of a pass-through disk is marginally better than that of VHD files. However, if you use pass-through disks you lose all of the benefits of VHD files such as portability, snap-shotting and thin provisioning. Considering these trade-offs, using pass-through disks should really only be considered if you require a disk that is greater than 2 TB in size or if your application is I/O bound and you really could benefit from another .1 ms shaved off your average response time.</p>
<p>Check it <a href="http://clusteringformeremortals.com/2009/09/25/hyper-v-pass-through-disk-performance-vs-fixed-size-vhd-files-and-dynamic-vhd-files-in-windows-server-2008-r2/">there</a></p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><div style="text-align:center;"><a href="http://www.jmedved.com/default.aspx?page=vhdattach&#38;rendering=xhtml"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.downloadsquad.com/media/2009/11/vhd-attach-adfgae546.jpg" border="0" alt="" hspace="4" vspace="4" width="580" height="323" /><br />
</a></div>
<p>One of Windows 7&#8217;s slick new features is its handling of VHD (virtual hard disk) files. You can use them for a number of handy functions &#8211; from discreetly archiving files and folders to booting a full-fledged Vista, Windows 7, or Windows Server 2008 install via your Windows 7 boot.ini.</p>
<p>But VHDs aren&#8217;t as easy to work with out-of-the-box as they could be. To mount and unmount, you&#8217;ve got to head over to the Disk Management snap-in (<strong>diskmgmt.msc</strong>), wait for the screen to populate, go to actions-&#62;attach (or detach), browse for your VHD, and then wait some more.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.jmedved.com/default.aspx?page=vhdattach&#38;rendering=xhtml">VhdAttach</a> speeds the process up by adding two entries to your context menu. Mouse over a .VHD file, right-click it, and you can mount and dismount right from Windows Explorer. Left click <strong>attach</strong>, and your VHD will pop up alongside your physical hard disks. When you&#8217;re all done, detaching is just as simple.</p>
<p>The control app (inset in screenshot) which can open your VHDs and display information about them. You can also attach and detach from this screen.</p>
<p>VhdAttach is a free download and works with both Windows 7 and Server 2008.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p><strong><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-7" title="The SharePoint Underground" src="http://sharepointunderground.wordpress.com/files/2009/10/spundergroundxsm.gif" alt="The SharePoint Underground" width="77" height="63" /></strong></p>
<p><strong>The need for multiple environments</strong></p>
<p>Sometimes, as a consultant in the field, we have to support either multiple products, many facets of one product or to demo products. This raises the need for having multiple environments, or Operating Systems installed or available for use. They very old way to do this was to create multiple partitions, install multiple operating systems, and boot accordingly. The problem with this was that we had to sacrifice disk space and carve up our hard drive.  Recently, most of us changed to running virtual environments by running either Virtual PC/Virtual Server or Server 2008 with Hyper-V.  These were ok solutions, but had their limitations. Not all hardware was able to be directly accessed, and we were limited to the amount of Ram and Processor power we could use.  In the case of a Virtual PC, we could only use 32 bit environments.</p>
<p><strong>Enter Windows 7</strong></p>
<p>With Windows 7, and Windows Server 2008 R2, we now have the ability to actually boot from a VHD. Booting from a VHD offers the following enhancements:</p>
<ul>
<li>No partitions to carve out</li>
<li>Direct and full hardware access</li>
<li>Dynamically expanding virtual drive</li>
<li>Real performance and great user experience*</li>
<li>Full 64 bit support (on 64 bit hardware)</li>
</ul>
<p>*Since the environment is booting from a virtual drive, there is a slight (3%-5%) performance hit on disk I/O.</p>
<p><strong>The Process</strong></p>
<p><strong><em>The Concept</em></strong></p>
<p>The concept is simple. Create a VHD and make it accessible, edit the boot menu of the OS, boot into the VHD.  The execution has a little more to it.</p>
<p><strong><em>Create the VHD</em></strong></p>
<p>There are a few ways to create the VHD, but the easiest I have found is to use Windows Server 2008 with Hyper-V to create the VHD. You can use Virtual PC, however Hyper-V allows you to create a 64 bit environment, and that is why I prefer Server 2008.  The OS for the VHD must be either Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 in order to boot.  Typically, I will just create a base image with OS only, and then build it once I am booted into it. The process to build the VHD is as follows:</p>
<ul>
<li>Launch Hyper-V and create a new virtual environment.</li>
<li>Make sure to enable growth, and set the maximum size to something manageable, I use between 50 GB – 80 GB, but that will depend on how much the environment will hold (Note, you will get slightly better performance if you use a fixed disk size&#8230;)</li>
<li>Memory is not really important, however the more you allocate the faster the OS install will go.</li>
<li>Map an install disk to the environment</li>
<li>When done, boot into the virtual environment and install the OS and all features (.Net, IIS, etc…), as well as all updates</li>
<li>Once the OS base image is done, run SYSPREP
<ul>
<li>SYSPREP is done to strip all hardware references from the environment so you can port the environment to another system
<ul>
<li>C:\windows\system32\sysprep</li>
<li>Use default setting of OOBE</li>
<li>Check the ‘Generalize’ box</li>
<li>Shutdown option should be ‘Shutdown’</li>
<li>Once SYSPREP is completed the image will shut down.</li>
<li>Once the image has shut down, you can export the image for use (or just do a copy of the VHD. You only need the VHD for this, not the supporting files.)</li>
</ul>
</li>
</ul>
</li>
</ul>
<p><strong><em>Booting the VHD</em></strong></p>
<p>Once you have a Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 VHD, then you can copy it to computer that you wish to boot the VHD.  I typically create a folder called VHDs at the root of the C: drive to place the VHD.  You only need to copy the VHD, not the supporting configuration files from the Hyper-V export.  Once you have the VHD on the hard drive, then all you need to do is edit the boot menu. Since Vista, the tool to edit the boot menu is BCDEDIT. Complete the following steps to add the VHD to the boot menu.</p>
<ul>
<li>Open a command prompt as ADMINISTRATOR</li>
<li>Enter the following commands
<ul>
<li><em>bcdedit /copy {current} /d “Your_VHD_Menu_Item_Name”</em></li>
<li>Copy the CLSID at the end of the successful statement. It will be the id within the brackets {}.</li>
<li><em>bcdedit /set {CLSID} device vhd=[C:]\VHDs\vhdname.vhd</em></li>
<li><em>bcdedit /set {CLSID} osdevice vhd=[C:]\VHDs\vhdname.vhd</em></li>
<li><em>bcdedit /set {CLSID} detecthal on</em></li>
</ul>
</li>
</ul>
<p>Once the commands are completed, you should now be able to re-boot, and see the new VHD in the boot menu. Boot into the VHD, and it will begin setup as if you are on a brand new computer.  It will make you create a new user account, but once done you can boot into the existing user account that was created in the Hyper-V setup.</p>
<p><strong>Conclusion</strong></p>
<p>As you can see, setting up the environment is straight forward, and not too complicated. It allows a multi-boot environment without the ‘Muddy’ aspect of creating partitions, overwriting the native OS, or any of the old ways to multi-boot.  It also allows for full hardware access with minimal hard drive footprint.  You can also access the physical hard drive and other VHD’s by attaching them with disk manager.  I have found this to be the best way to have native Windows 7 for everyday use, and Server 2008 for development/testing and an environment that I can just ‘trash’ without fear of wiping my main OS, and if I want to get rid of one of the environments, all I do is:</p>
<ul>
<li>bcdedit /delete {GUID} /cleanup<em></em></li>
</ul>
<p><em> </em></p>
<p>There are other ways to set this up, even on a bare hard drive with no existing OS.  You can boot with the OS DVD, go to a command prompt, and use DISKPART to create the VHD and install the OS. I decided to go the easier route, but there are many blogs that cover this approach.</p>
<p>Any questions or comments please let me know!</p>
<p>Happy Virtualizing!</p>

<p>For example, the command to convert a VMDK to a VHD is:</p>
<blockquote><p>&#34;c:\program files\sun\VirtualBox\VBoxManage.exe&#34; clonehd &#34;my.vhd&#34; &#34;my.vmdk&#34; &#8211;format vmdk</p>
</blockquote>
<p>Below is the documentation from section 8.16 VBoxManage clonehd:</p>
<blockquote><pre>VBoxManage clonehd         &#60;uuid&#62;&#124;&#60;filename&#62; &#60;outputfile&#62;
                           [--format VDI&#124;VMDK&#124;VHD&#124;RAW&#124;&#60;other&#62;]
                           [--variant Standard,Fixed,Split2G,Stream,ESX]
                           [--type normal&#124;writethrough&#124;immutable]
                           [--remember]</pre>
<p>where the parameters mean:</p>
<dl>
<dt>format </dt>
<dd>
<p>Allow to choose a file format for the output file different from the file format of the input file.</p>
</p>
</dd>
<dt>variant </dt>
<dd>
<p>Allow to choose a file format variant for the output file. It is a comma-separated list of variant flags. Not all combinations are supported, and specifying inconsistent flags will result in an error message.</p>
</p>
</dd>
<dt>type </dt>
<dd>
<p>Only honored if &#8211;remember is also specified. Defines what kind of hard disk type this image should be.</p>
</p>
</dd>
<dt>remember </dt>
<dd>
<p>Keep the destination image registered after it was successfully written.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>Today I have been moving one of my file servers from a physical environment into a virtual machine.  Originally I was going to clone the physical drive and use the image on the virtual drive.  Unfortunatly the Clonezilla software does not run under Microsoft&#8217;s Virtual Server 2005 R2 sP1.</p>
<p>However it turns out, thanks to a quick internet search ( <a href="http://www.winhelponline.com/blog/disk2vhd-utility-creates-vhd-images-of-physical-disks/">http://www.winhelponline.com/blog/disk2vhd-utility-creates-vhd-images-of-physical-disks/</a>), that Microsoft have their own FREE P2V utility.  One of the nice things is this runs live on the server you are virtualising.  It use shadow copy to copy the contents of a running system disk into a new VHD.</p>
<p>However you still need to repair install Windows and install the latest service packs and updates after the P2V is complete.</p>

<p><em>Disk2vhd is a utility that creates VHD (Virtual Hard Disk &#8211; Microsoft’s Virtual Machine disk format) versions of physical disks for use in Microsoft Virtual PC or Microsoft Hyper-V virtual machines (VMs). The difference between Disk2vhd and other physical-to-virtual tools is that you can run Disk2vhd on a system that’s online.<!--more--></em></p>
<p><strong>Cara Penggunaan</strong></p>
<ol>
<li>Jalankan Disk2vhd,</li>
</ol>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>Meine &#8220;Tante&#8221; <a href="http://www.bagandanews.de/56.htm" target="_blank">Oshana</a> ist am 14.09.09 Mama von 10 Ridgeback Welpen geworden! Den 7 Mädchen und 3 Jungen geht es super! HERZLICHEN GLÜCKWUNSCH!</p>
<p><a href="http://www.bagandanews.de/62.htm" target="_blank">http://www.bagandanews.de/62.htm</a> &#60;= Bilder der Welpen in der 6te Woche <img src='http://s.wordpress.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif' alt=':)' class='wp-smiley' />  !</p>
<p>Der Papa der Kleinen ist <a href="http://www.dzrr.de/hunde/?id=47204" target="_blank">Chiwambo Baha de Kiungwana</a>, ein sehr schöner dunkler Rüder. Hier Photos von Karin van Klaveren <a href="http://www.rhodesian-ridgeback-foto.de/chiwambo_jaeger.html" target="_blank">http://www.rhodesian-ridgeback-foto.de/chiwambo_jaeger.html</a> .</p>
Die Zahl der <a href="http://www.ridgeback-in-not.de/" target="_blank">Ridgeback-in-Not-Hunde </a>steigt.</p>
<p><a href="http://umtali.wordpress.com/2008/06/18/komme-aus-afrika-ein-rhodesian-ridgeback-portrait/" target="_blank">http://umtali.wordpress.com/2008/06/18/komme-aus-afrika-ein-rhodesian-ridgeback-portrait/</a></p>

<pre>var objVS = new ActiveXObject("VirtualServer.Application", strServer);
var objVM = objVS.FindVirtualMachine(strVMName);
var objTask;</pre>
<pre>objTask = objVM.StartUp();
<pre>//
// Remote Start/Stop einer Virtuellen Maschine
//
var CRLF = "\r\n";
var VM_STATE_OFF = 1;
var VM_STATE_RUNNING = 5;

var strServer = "<em>VS Server</em>"
var strVMName = "<em>Gast VM Name</em>"

var objVS = new ActiveXObject("VirtualServer.Application", strServer);
var objVM = objVS.FindVirtualMachine(strVMName);
var objTask;

//
// Wenn die virtuelle Maschine gefunden wurde
//
if ( objVM != null )
{
    WScript.Echo("Virtuelle Maschine mit folgendem Namen gefunden: " +
      strVMName);

    //
    // Wenn die VM läuft, dann auf einen sauberen Shutdown warten
    //
    // Das setzt voraus, dass die VM Additions auf dem Gast OS
    // installiert sind
    //
    // Es kann passieren, dass dieser Befehl auf einer
    // "eingefrorenen" VM nicht funktioniert
    //
    if ( objVM.State == VM_STATE_RUNNING )
    {
        try
        {
            WScript.Echo("Versuche, die VM herunterzufahren...");
            task = objVM.GuestOS.Shutdown();
            WaitForTask(task);
        }
        catch (e)
        {
            //
            // Das Herunterfahren hat nicht funktioniert,
            // also schalte die VM aus
            //
            WScript.Echo("Erzwinge das Ausschalten der VM...");
            task = objVM.TurnOff();
            WaitForTask( task );
        }
    }

    //
    // Ist eine VM ausgeschltet, dann wird sie gestartet
    //
    if ( objVM.State == VM_STATE_OFF )
    {
        WScript.Echo("Starte VM...");
        objTask = objVM.StartUp();
        WaitForTask(objTask);
    }
}
else
{
    WScript.Echo("Konnte kein VM mit folgendem Namen finden: " +
        strVMName);
}</pre>
<p>Diesen Code habe ich auf dem Blog von David Wang gefunden: <a title="HOWTO: Remotely start and stop a Virtual Machine on Virtual Server 2005" href="http://blogs.msdn.com/david.wang/archive/2005/10/18/HOWTO_Remotely_start_and_stop_a_Virtual_Machine_on_Virtual_Server_2005.aspx" target="_blank">http://blogs.msdn.com/david.wang/archive/2005/10/18/HOWTO_Remotely_start_and_stop_a_Virtual_Machine_on_Virtual_Server_2005.aspx </a>- Thank you David for sharing this code on the web.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>Earlier this month I wrote how you can <a href="http://scottrudy.wordpress.com/2009/08/11/mount-a-windows-backup-and-restore-center-vhd-using-diskpart/" target="_blank">mount a VHD using the command line utility DiskPart</a>. This is an extremely useful utility, but sometimes you just want the simplicity of using the Windows GUI interface. Well, in Windows 7 the Disk Management MMC snap-in makes this a breeze.</p>
<p>The easiest way to load the snap-in is to open Computer Management by right-clicking on the “Computer” link in the Windows start menu and choosing “Manage”. This action will open a whole host of utilities you can use to manage your computer, but for this exercise you will only need to use the Disk Management link located in the left pane under Computer Management\Storage. Once you click on Disk Management it may take Windows a few seconds to find all of your storage devices and display them in the right pane.</p>
<p>Once the storage devices have loaded you can click on the Action menu at the top of the window. You now have the “Attach VHD” menu option. Simply click that option and select the VHD file you want to attach.</p>
<p>Detaching the file is a little more confusing. To detach it you have to navigate to the disk in the bottom pane of the Disk Management utility. The left most column in that pane is a series of buttons with the disk name shown. Right click on the disk name (e.g. Disk 2 in the image below) and select “Detach VHD”. Ensure you don’t check the delete checkbox, unless you don’t want any data on the VHD anymore.</p>
<p> </p>
