Over the last couple of days, I’ve been listening to the non-titular head of the Republican Party, Rush Limbaugh. Each time I tuned in, Limbaugh was yammering on and on about how man-made global warming is a fraud based on recently hacked emails from sundry scientists. I just couldn’t follow very closely – but listening to Limbaugh did make me happy while I listened . . . what a lovely thought that there is no global warming . . . or at the very least there is nothing that can be done about global warming . . . or at least that the End Times are imminent with free  Cuban Cigars, Viagra and flights to the Dominican Republic reserved for the faithful global-warming skeptics!

However transitory these most happy of happy thoughts might be, one gets the sense that the national debate over healthcare reform is over.  That is, the most popular aspect of the healthcare reform (the socialist public option part) is likely to be abandoned for sake of passage through the Senate. So the question arises: at what point is the healthcare reform bill no longer reform? Without the public option, healthcare “reform” is more of a welfare/entitlement program for the health insurance corporations.

After listening to an excellent edition of This American Life, which explains why health insurance companies are unable to control health care costs, I realized how desperately capitalism itself needs healthcare reform as if the economic system were threatening to Go Galt on the John Galts of America. After all, how far will ethical egoism get you if you have preexisting conditions? What does it matter to your health insurance company if you happen to be John Galt? If there is a sliver of rationale for denying benefits for treatable illness, the insurance industry would sooner see you Shrugged off the Atlas than give you the opportunity to Shrug the Atlas.

Think of the unregulated ethical egoism of insurance companies whose profit margin remains the same as healthcare costs balloon upward. Again, the American Life episode helps bring out the full contradictory nature of our current health care system. All of Capital and the Bourgeoisie are on board for total health-care reform, but thanks to the Republican Party, the Teabagger Movement and the health insurance industry, of course, things just might get much worse before they get better, as Lenin would say.

This is how this govt treats our soldiers. These very ministers expect our soldiers and police to take the bullets on their chests and get killed so that these ministers can romp about in their helicopters and air-conditioned swanky cars, sleep in their plush flats and bungalows. By all accounts, they are least bothered about the sorry plight of our security forces. I am afraid the day is not far when the armed forces of India would be forced to contemplate, introspect and evaluate the worthiness in sacrificing their lives for a country which is not only ungrateful but also does not value the most supreme sacrifice. The people of this country are very busy playing the stock markets, investing in real estate, discussing the latest model of a four-wheeler or watching one of those reality & dance shows on television. The majority are struggling to make two ends meet to feed, clothe and educate their children and family. The one billion populace of India have just no time to even think about the dangers lurking just round the corner or right in their alley. I suppose that’s the way our Con govt likes it, it serves their purpose. The Con govt has cleverly devised a dual policy to hoodwink the people of this country. Some brands are getting it right…others on the other hand are still marketing like those dodgy Viagra pills. And just to clarify when I say getting it right, I’m talking about brands not using social media to just pretty much spam a heap of people.

Starting with the ones that are getting it right, Ikea recently used Facebook’s photo tagging function to give away products from their show room. They created a profile for the store manager and he uploaded some photos of the show room. The first people to tag an item with their name on won it. Awesome..the full details are below.

The second is Toys ‘R’ Us who rewarded friend’s of the brand’s fan page by giving them exclusive mystery deals. Simple, but nice and it’s also solicited.

Now for the ones that that don’t. I’ve mentioned Moonfruit before and despite what some people think, it is not a shining example of using Twitter, but Westfield has almost topped it launching its ‘Win a $10,000 Gift Card’ promotion through Facebook. Essentially you update your status by saying ‘All I want for Christmas is a Westfield Gift Card’ and you get entered into a prize draw, whilst spamming your friends at the same time.

The main differences are…

People want the Macbook not Moonfruit and people want the $10K, not the Westfield Gift Card. It’s a meaningless relationship that have got people wanting and talking about the wrong thing, unlike the Ikea and Toys ‘R’ Us examples. The latter’s products and brand experience are part of their communication.

Moonfruit and Westfield have also got the mechanics wrong. Larger groups benefit with Ikea and Toy ‘R’ Us, not just a handful of individuals. They are essentially marketing to networks of people rather than just applying prize draw tactics learnt in the ‘push’ world. You need to be more inclusive rather than exclusive marketing to networks.

You could argue that Moonfruit and Westfield are playing a numbers game which might be true. These promotions wouldn’t have cost much to execute and less than a 0.5% conversion might make them money, but it is still seen as unsolicited spam, albeit indirectly through my friends. And let’s be honest, if I start getting a friend spamalanche, I won’t be using FB et al that much. This might work for Viagra, but do you really want to market like that?

Doubtless you heard that some have taken to putting Viagra in their food. This was called a “dangerous” meal but as long you don’t get indigestion 4 hours later, it’s all good.

Newsweek reported on November 18th that there’s a new drug being tested to enhance the female libido. Flibanserin is the highly-anticipated, not-quite-FDA-approved pill that has recently been proven to boost the sex drive of women.

For years, females have watched those corny Viagra commercials and maybe some even pondered, “What if I could pop a pill and get in the mood?” Well, according to recent studies, interested females may have their day in the sun in the not-so-distant future. Developed by the German drug manufacturer Boehringer Ingelheim, Flibanserin was first tested as an anti-depressant, but wasn’t effective in improving one’s mood. Instead, researchers realized that the drug helped to improve the female sex drive! Since the discovery, a trial study has been completed in which 2,000 middle-aged women who suffer from a sexual disorder took Flibanserin for six months. The studies came back showing results that Flibanserin improved the female libido in a significant number of cases.

The other side of the card is that there’s still an ongoing debate whether or not women even suffer from sexual dysfunction which is, of course, stirring controversy over the effectiveness and need for a drug like Flibanserin. The good news is that if you’re a gal who finds herself rarely in the mood, there may someday be a drug on the market to give you a little boost in the bedroom!

Vad är manlighet?

Jag har ingen aning; ändå är det ett ord jag använder ganska ofta. Senast i en tweet för bara en liten stund sedan. Jag försökte locka Psykbryts-Jonas att komma och hälsa på mig med löfte om att prova min spikmatta:

“Du får komma hit och prova min spikmatta, så kan jag utnyttja dig för min uppsats om manlighet som psykisk sjukdom “

Manlighet som psykisk sjukdom; det är ungefär så jag har formulerat den spirande uppsatsen när det har behövts, eller när någon frågar. Egentligen är det inte riktigt det jag skriver om, men det låter mer snärtigt än En studie av skönlitterära beskrivningar av snäva mansroller och frigörelsen från dem ur ett cripperspektiv med inslag av såväl transteori, queerteori och psykradikalism, inspirerat av Foucaults teorier om galenskap, kön och sexualitet. Det är detta jag pysslar med när jag inte bloggar: Jag skriver på min D-uppsats i Engelska, även om det hittills mest består i att läsa in mig på den teoretiska bakgrunden.

Hursomhelst borde jag alltså veta vad manlighet är. Det är ju det hela min uppsats bygger på, och det är också det som en stor del av den här bloggen kretsar runt: Att utforska könsutrymmen och provspela könsroller, grubbla över var könen sitter och hur man isåfall lockar fram dem, samla små analyser av hur kön konstrueras, fundera över växelverkan mellan biologi och beteende – och driva med mig själv i min jakt på manligheten. Jag är diagnosticerad transsexuell, går på testosteron sedan snart fem månader och väntar på en kallelse till kirurgen för att ta bort brösten – och allt detta för att jag vill leva med en “manlig” kropp i en “manlig” social roll.

Jag borde veta vad manlighet är, men jag gör det inte. Så jag googlar ordet.

Det första som kommer upp är en länk till Potenslinjen; Viagraprånglarna Pfizers försök att sprida “information” om potensproblem. De hänvisar till en undersökning från 2003 där svenska män och kvinnor har fått svara på vad de anser är “viktigt för manligheten” och sätta betyg efter hur viktigt de tycker att det är:

1. Vara praktiskt händig (7,1)
2. Ha bra potens (6,4)
3. Ha välavlönat jobb (5,9)
4. En attraktiv partner (5,9)
5. En vältränad kropp (5,8)
6. Ett attraktivt yttre (5,5)
7. Vara sportintresserad (4,9)
8. Alltid vara redo för sex (4,9)
9. Äga tekniska prylar (3,9)
10. Ha en häftig bil (3,3)

Att vara händig är alltså det som är viktigast för manligheten, följt av att ha bra potens. Man kan tillochmed testa sin potens på sidan, ifall man är osäker. Har man lägre än 21 räknas det som erektionsproblem. Jag får åtta poäng – och då har jag ändå gått med konstant stånd i två månader. Jag är impotent för att jag inte penetrerar någon partner, misstänker jag.

Jag kan hänga upp hyllor, tavlor och lampor och montera IKEA-möbler, och jag vet skillnaden mellan phillipskruv och pozidriv – men mitt mest välavlönade jobb någonsin gav 80 kronor i timmen, och jag har ingen partner och hade jag någon skulle jag inte kunna använda min egen kuk för att penetrera henom. Min kropp har en ansamling av lös hud på magen och inte mycket till muskler, och dessutom har jag gigantiska moobs. Något säger mig att det inte är det som de flesta menar med “en vältränad kropp” och “ett attraktivt yttre”. Mitt sportintresse är ungefär lika stort som mitt intresse för att äga statusmarkörer, som båda tillsammans är ungefär lika stora som mitt intresse för att skaffa mig ett sexliv med någon annan. Inte stort, alltså.

Jag är omanlig i de avseendena – men jag lider inte av det, lika lite som jag lider av att vara androgyn och fjollig. Jag lider av att min kropp inte fungerar och ser ut som jag tycker att den borde göra, men jag lider inte av att vara omanlig. Manlighet för mig sitter inte i hur lång och hård kuk man har, eller i silhuetten av ens bröstkorg, eller i kroppsbehåring, röstläge, skäggväxt, muskelmassa, kromosomer, hormoner, avsaknaden av äggstockar eller förekomsten av testiklar eller förmågan att producera spermier som kan befrukta ett ägg. Med undantag av det sistnämnda är det sånt jag önskar mig – men längtan efter att ha en kropp med alla dessa egenskaper är inte nödvändigtvis något som har med manlighet att göra.

Alla transsexuella är naturligtvis olika, och jag vet att många inte håller med mig, men för mig är det så: Jag känner mig inte mer manlig när jag skruvar ihop en Billy än när jag bakar en kaka – däremot har jag större chans att lyckas med hyllan eftersom kakbak kräver oerhört mycket större precision och timing än IKEA-möbler, och därmed är det roligare. Jag känner mig inte mer manlig för att jag numera ser ett myller av svarta hårstrån kika fram under hakan – däremot känner jag mig mer som mig själv.

Manlighet är bara ett ord jag använder för att kommunicera mitt behov och min längtan; för att översätta det till något som andra verkar kunna förstå, och för att kunna få den vård jag behöver. Men oavsett om man är född med snopp eller snippa kan strävan gå för långt ibland; risken finns att man överdriver och börjar må dåligt. Könshets – manlig-hets och kvinnlig-hets – beror på att könsrollerna skaver. Kostymen sitter tight, man får svårt att andas och kläderna är så snäva att det är svårt att röra sig utan att snubbla och ramla utanför – och ju snävare de är desto hårdare blir också fallet, eftersom man skuldbelägger sig själv: Om jag bara hade varit lite smalare och elegantare hade man inte ramlat.

En man utan rörelsefrihet

Det är lättare att lägga skulden på den som ramlar än att se till att det finns fler storlekar på kostymer tillgängliga, fast i stort sett alla människor förmodligen någon gång känner av könsskav. Det råkar bara drabba transpersoner hårdare än cispersoner. Vad spelar det för roll om det finns både rosa och blå kostymer och man så generöst får “välja” en om de är sydda efter Barbie och Ken och inte finns i fler storlekar, och om den som vill ha en regnbågsfärgad kostym blir utskrattad av skräddarna?

Manlighet och kvinnlighet i sig är inte en psykisk sjukdom, men att gå upp i en snäv könsroll kan leda till manlig-hets eller kvinnlig-hets. De i sin tur är båda orsaker till psykisk ohälsa, i allra högsta grad. Själv är jag inte särskilt manlig – men ett riktigt mantimmer.

Se trata de la primera vez que una terapia sexual femenina actúa a nivel cerebral, según ha explicado John Thorp, profesor de obstetricia y ginecología de la Facultad de Medicina de la Universidad de Carolina del Norte (EE.UU.) y responsable de la investigación.
Los cuatro ensayos clínicos de Flibanserin, llevados a cabo en Estados Unidos, Canadá y Europa, revelan que lo más efectivo para combatir la falta de deseo sexual en mujeres es administrar una dosis diaria de 100 miligramos. El tratamiento aumenta el número de encuentros sexuales satisfactorios y la líbido, además de reducir el estrés asociado con la disfunción sexual femenina.
“Es mucho más difícil medir una respuesta en las mujeres. En los hombres, la reacción al viagra se observa con la erección, pero en las mujeres el efecto más complicado, una especie de impacto psicológico, emocional y social”, explica Thorp, que ha presentado los resultados de su trabajo durante la conferencia de la Sociedad Europea de Medicina Sexual celebrada en Lyon, Francia.
El hallazgo accidental de los efectos del medicamento es similar al ocurrido con el Viagra, que originalmente fue diseñado como un fármaco para el corazón pero no logró su objetivo.

The drug flibanserin,  originally created as an antidepressant, is effective in treating women with low libido, pooled results from three separate clinical trials have found.

The trials were the first ever to test a therapy that works at the level of the brain to enhance libido in women reporting low sexual desire, said Dr John M. Thorp Jr, professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of North Carolina and the principal investigator for North America in the studies.

“Flibanserin was a poor antidepressant,” Thorp said. “However, astute observers noted that it increased libido in laboratory animals and human subjects.”

“So, we conducted multiple clinical trials and the women in our studies who took it for hypoactive sexual desire disorder reported significant improvements in sexual desire and satisfactory sexual experiences.

“It’s essentially a Viagra-like drug for women in that diminished desire or libido is the most common feminine sexual problem, like erectile dysfunction is in men,” Thorp was quoted as saying by Sciencedaily.com

Studies have shown that the prevalence of hypoactive sexual desire disorder in the US ranges from 9 percent to 26 percent of women, depending on age and menopausal status.

Flibanserin is currently an investigational drug and is available only to women taking part in clinical trials.

The results were reported on Nov. 16, at the Congress of the European Society for Sexual Medicine in Lyon, France.

The presentation was given by Dr Elaine E. Jolly, the overall principal investigator and a professor at the University of Ottawa in Canada.

Jolly, Thorp and colleagues pooled data from four clinical trials of flibanserin conducted in the U.S., Canada and Europe.

A total of 1,946 pre-menopausal women ages 18 and older were randomized to receive either flibanserin or placebo for 24 weeks, with 4 weeks of pre-treatment baseline measurement and 4 weeks of post-treatment follow-up.

The researchers concluded that treatment with 100 milligrams of flibanserin once a day was associated with significant improvements versus placebo in the number of satisfying sexual events (SSE) reported, sexual desire, a reduction in distress associated with sexual dysfunction, and sexual functioning as measured by FSFI.

“These results point to a novel approach to pharmacologic treatment of the sexual problem that plagues reproductive age women the most, and may over time prove to be an effective treatment without the side effects of androgen replacement therapy, which is the only treatment currently available,” Thorp said.

The trials were funded by Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, the manufacturer of flibanserin.
