Last night’s MAMA, hosted by Mnet, was certainly a feast for numerous Kpop fans out there. However, as enjoyable as it was, the event was (and still is) swamped with layers of controversy, with SM Entertainment’s boycott being the eye of the storm. Mnet and SME appear to be mortal enemies, but many still remember the fact that they used to be very friendly with each other. Exactly what made them become such bitter adversaries? Let’s examine the dispute between Mnet and SME.

What exactly is Mnet?

Mnet is a media company owned by CJ Media which focuses on music, media, entertainment and web content business. CJ Media is a part of CJ, a South Korean conglomerate that is one of the top five largest companies in the country. Mnet is involved in pretty much every aspect of the entertainment industry, ranging from album production, distribution, sales, management, television broadcasting, online media and many other businesses. With these expansion, Mnet has become a giant in music industry, with market share of 44% in album sales and over 20% in online music sales.

Mnet and CJ are also shareholders in major entertainment companies DSP Entertainment and YG Entertainment. Although they own no more than 20% of shares from each company, the fact that CJ is a conglomerate means the aforementioned companies are now affiliates of CJ. Smaller entertainment companies with famous names such as Shinwha, Kim Dong Ryul and Wheesung are “affiliates” of CJ as well. Similarly, 30% of JYP Entertainment is held by SK, another conglomerate that is one of top 5 largest companies in Korea, making JYP a faction with as much support as Mnet has.

How has SME and Mnet’s relationship developed over the years?

Before 2008, SME and Mnet were quite friendly. MKMF, now known as MAMA, featured numerous artists from SME which were given many awards. However, during 2008, Mnet proposed to SME that they would like to be the distributor of music produced by SME; in return, Mnet would receive certain percentage of profit from the sales. Mnet had already been distributing music of JYP, DSP and YG, and with the right to distribute SME’s music they would become undisputed leader in the industry. SME refused the offer as they had the ability to distribute their own music and did not feel the need to pay Mnet for a job that they could do themselves (SME’s stance against this was well known even prior to 2008 as evidenced here). Mnet undoubtedly held a grudge against SME for obstructing their dominance of the industry, and the friendship ended there.

CJ has also attempted hostile takeover of SME but failed. If they had been successful, CJ would have acquired control of Korean entertainment industry. These facts have not been well-publicized, until recent controversy involving SME and MAMA have brought the public’s attention to the relationship between the two parties. With SNSD’s Gee and MAMA, we have now witnessed the nature of their relationship.

How does MAMA play into this tense relationship between SME and Mnet?

One of the biggest controversies brought on by MAMA was the fact that the three members of TVXQ, Jaejoong, Yoochun and Junsu, made their appearance for acceptance of Best Representative of Asia Award. Although some may argue that SME’s outrage was uncalled for, and that the trio is free to do whatever they want, the choice to make an appearance at an Mnet event was deliberate and could not have been a spontaneous, wanton decision.

So what’s the significance behind TVXQ’s appearance?

Many have suspected that the three members were able to act in such bold manner against SME in recent months because they were being supported by an organization more powerful than SME. With their unabashed appearance at MAMA, it now appears that Mnet and CJ might be the ones that have the three members’ back. It is very possible that CJ and Mnet are backing the three members in order to win their fight against SME for dominance in the industry. If that is so, then TVXQ members have become mere pawns in a battle between two corporations.

SME, a company now known for its oppressive, big-corporate attitude towards its artists, is ironically under attack from one of the largest corporations in Korea. Both companies are profit-motivated organizations that are pursuing whatever action that generates more profit, so there is no good or bad in a situation like this. What is unfortunate, however, is that the artists have become the victims in this corporate power struggle. TVXQ, SNSD, and SHINee are all victims in this dispute between SME and CJ/Mnet; MAMA could merely have been the beginning of penance for these artists.

The warning tells a story of its own: some of the center’s clients are too young to buy themselves a beer.

Several Bay Area doctors who recommend medical marijuana for their patients said in recent interviews that their client base had expanded to include teenagers with psychiatric conditions including attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder.

“It’s not everybody’s medicine, but for some, it can make a profound difference,” said Valerie Corral, a founder of the Wo/Men’s Alliance for Medical Marijuana, a patients’ collective in Santa Cruz that has two dozen minors as registered clients.

Because California does not require doctors to report cases involving medical marijuana, no reliable data exist for how many minors have been authorized to receive it. But Dr. Jean Talleyrand, who founded MediCann, a network in Oakland of 20 clinics who authorize patients to use the drug, said his staff members had treated as many as 50 patients ages 14 to 18 who had A.D.H.D. Bay Area doctors have been at the forefront of the fierce debate about medical marijuana, winning tolerance for people with grave illnesses like terminal cancer and AIDS. Yet as these doctors use their discretion more liberally, such support — even here — may be harder to muster, especially when it comes to using marijuana to treat adolescents with A.D.H.D.

“How many ways can one say ‘one of the worst ideas of all time?’ ” asked Stephen Hinshaw, the chairman of the psychology department at the University of California, Berkeley. He cited studies showing that tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, the active ingredient in cannabis, disrupts attention, memory and concentration — functions already compromised in people with the attention-deficit disorder.

Advocates are just as adamant, though they are in a distinct minority. “It’s safer than aspirin,” Dr. Talleyrand said. He and other marijuana advocates maintain that it is also safer than methylphenidate (Ritalin), the stimulant prescription drug most often used to treat A.D.H.D. That drug has documented potential side effects including insomnia, depression, facial tics and stunted growth.

In 1996, voters approved a ballot proposition making California the first state to legalize medical marijuana. Twelve other states have followed suit — allowing cannabis for several specified, serious conditions including cancer and AIDS — but only California adds the grab-bag phrase “for any other illness for which marijuana provides relief.”

This has left those doctors willing to “recommend” cannabis — in the Alice-in-Wonderland world of medical marijuana, they cannot legally prescribe it — with leeway that some use to a daring degree. “You can get it for a backache,” said Keith Stroup, the founder of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws.

Nonetheless, expanding its use among young people is controversial even among doctors who authorize medical marijuana.

Gene Schoenfeld, a doctor in Sausalito, said, “I wouldn’t do it for anyone under 21, unless they have a life-threatening problem such as cancer or AIDS.”

Dr. Schoenfeld added, “It’s detrimental to adolescents who chronically use it, and if it’s being used medically, that implies chronic use.”

Dr. Nora D. Volkow, director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, said she was particularly worried about the risk of dependency — a risk she said was already high among adolescents and people with attention-deficit disorder.

Counterintuitive as it may seem, however, patients and doctors have been reporting that marijuana helps alleviate some of the symptoms, particularly the anxiety and anger that so often accompany A.D.H.D. The disorder has been diagnosed in more than 4.5 million children in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Researchers have linked the use of marijuana by adolescents to increased risk of psychosis and schizophrenia for people genetically predisposed to those illnesses. However, one 2008 report in the journal Schizophrenia Research suggested that the incidence of mental health problems among adolescents with the disorder who used marijuana was lower than that of nonusers.

Marijuana is “a godsend” for some people with A.D.H.D., said Dr. Edward M. Hallowell, a psychiatrist who has written several books on the disorder. However, Dr. Hallowell said he discourages his patients from using it, both because it is — mostly — illegal, and because his observations show that “it can lead to a syndrome in which all the person wants to do all day is get stoned, and they do nothing else.”

Until the age of 18, patients requesting medical marijuana must be accompanied to the doctor’s appointment and to the dispensaries by a parent or authorized caregiver. Some doctors interviewed said they suspected that in at least some cases, parents were accompanying their children primarily with the hope that medical authorization would allow the adolescents to avoid buying drugs on the street.

A recent University of Michigan study found that more than 40 percent of high school students had tried marijuana.

“I don’t have a problem with that, as long as we can have our medical conversation,” Dr. Talleyrand said, adding that patients must have medical records to be seen by his doctors.

The Medical Board of California began investigating Dr. Talleyrand in the spring, said a board spokeswoman, Candis Cohen, after a KGO-TV report detailed questionable practices at MediCann clinics, which, the report said, had grossed at least $10 million in five years.

Dr. Talleyrand and his staff members are not alone in being willing to recommend marijuana for minors. In Berkeley, Dr. Frank Lucido said he was questioned by the medical board but ultimately not disciplined after he authorized marijuana for a 16-year-old boy with A.D.H.D. who had tried Ritalin unsuccessfully and was racking up a record of minor arrests.

Within a year of the new treatment, he said, the boy was getting better grades and was even elected president of his special-education class. “He was telling his mother: ‘My brain works. I can think,’ ” Dr. Lucido said.

“With any medication, you weigh the benefits against the risks,” he added.

Even so, MediCann patients who receive the authorization must sign a form listing possible downsides of marijuana use, including “mental slowness,” memory problems, nervousness, confusion, “increased talkativeness,” rapid heartbeat, difficulty in completing complex tasks and hunger. “Some patients can become dependent on marijuana,” the form also warns.

The White House’s recent signals of more federal tolerance for state medical marijuana laws — which pointedly excluded sales to minors — reignited the debate over medical marijuana.

Some advocates, like Dr. Lester Grinspoon, an associate professor emeritus of psychiatry at Harvard University, suggest that medical marijuana’s stigma has less to do with questions of clinical efficacy and more to do with its association, in popular culture, with illicit pleasure and addiction.

Others, like Alberto Torrico of Fremont, the majority leader of the California Assembly, argue for more oversight in general. “The marijuana is a lot more powerful these days than when we were growing up, and too much is being dispensed for nonmedical reasons,” he said in an interview last week, bluntly adding, “Any children being given medical marijuana is unacceptable.”

As advocates of increased acceptance try to win support, they may find their serious arguments compromised by the dispensaries’ playful atmosphere.

OrganiCann, a dispensary in Santa Rosa, has a Web site advertisement listing the “medible of the week” — butterscotch rock candy — invitingly photographed in a gift box with a ribbon. OrganiCann also offers a 10 percent discount, every Friday, for customers with a valid student ID.

La que una vez fue una superestrella pop junto a su banda Spice Girls y una de las mujeres mas deseadad del planeta, desde que se amachino con el futbolista metrosexual, su vida ha pasado a segundo termino. Unicamente parece ser usada de adorno de homosexuado David, que parece estar en una perpetua rivalidad con su esposa para parecer mas hermosa (si, dije hermosa) que ella misma. Y claro, su fisico tambien ha sufrido estragos, como pueden ver en la imagen de arriba, en la que podemos apreciar como la grasa sobrante le cuelga de su apretado vestido de una manera francamente repugante. Te extrañamos Victoria, lastima de ti…

No era Manolo Jiménez en sus inicios, ni mucho menos, un enamorado de las rotaciones. Partidos como el de hoy, sin embargo, le hacen ver que su reconversión no tiene más que elementos positivos. A pesar de las nueve bajas que se quedaron sin excursión al Teide, Jiménez ha maniatado con los once titulares de hoy (incluido Marc Valiente) a un Tenerife que fue de menos a más, pero que cuando llegó al más ya era demasiado tarde. Un espectacular Perotti y Renato, ya en la reanudación y con la pierna mala dejaron casi hecho un partido que complicó Nino. Al final los tres puntos viajan para la península para evitar que los dos de arriba se escapen. Con esto y ganando al Málaga el sábado, el segundo puesto será una realidad antes de diciembre.

A excepción de la sorprendente titularidad de Marc Valiente y la suplencia de Lolo, el de Arahal sacó lo mejor que tenía en cada puesto, y eso le bastó para saltar al terreno de juego con el bastón de mando agarrado. El Tenerife dudó en los primeros minutos y a punto estuvo de aprovecharlo el Sevilla nada más empezar, con un estratosférico pase al hueco de Luisfa que desaprovechó Kanouté con un tiro raso. Los locales no inquietaban a pesar del empuje de su hinchada, pero lo adelantado de su zaga permitía que nuestras afiladas bandas pulularan por los dominios de Aragoneses con peligro. En una de estas, a la media hora, galopada de Navas por la derecha que acaba en centro al segundo palo con Perotti solo. El “Monito” la ve venir y la mete para dentro sin contemplaciones. Esperemos que al argentino le haga crecerse el interés de los grandes, tanto como que Del Nido y Monchi aceleren su renovación y mejora de contrato.

Antes del descanso pudo Sicilia empatar de cabeza, pero su ocasión se marchó cerca del palo diestro de Javi Varas. Nada más retornar, Jiménez optó por volver a la táctica de un único punta y colocó a Romaric por Kanouté. La subida de Renato a la mediapunta provocó el cero a dos, pero a punto estuvo de salir más caro de lo esperado. Un error de Navas lo aprovechó el siempre atento Nino para robar y plantarse ante Varas. Valiente llegó haciendo honor a su apellido y le salió bien, aunque a punto estuvo de cometer penalti. Sin solución de continuidad llegó el segundo con un derechazo de Renato a la escuadra que parecía sentenciar.

Sin embargo, entre el acomodado marcador y la falta de otra referencia arriba además de Luisfa, los locales se fueron cada vez más arriba y más por empuje que por calidad comenzarona  merecer mejor suerte. Tanto que, cuando restaba un cuarto de hora para el final, Nino con una bonita volea daba carpetazo a más de dos meses de sequía goleadora. Con O´Fabuloso fundido, era la hora de Negredo para buscar la sentencia, pero el que más destacó fue Perotti aguantando balones y repartiendo el juego cuando más falta hacía. Al final no hubo sorpresa y conseguimos un triunfo sin demasiado brillo pero no por ello falto de trabajo. Ahora, sin deshacer la maleta, rumbo a Bucarest para dejar listo el liderato en Champions.

I’ll admit it.  I would never, in a month of Sundays, put Sadie on my daughter’s birth certificate.  It would be Sarah, thanks very much, just in case she grows up to run for office or take up brain surgery or otherwise wants to sound like a mature, serious adult.

I’m not necessarily in the majority.  And I’m not necessarily right, either.  Plenty of women named Julie and Jodie have turned out just fine.  And plenty of Sarah/Sadies are irritated at having to constantly explain that yes, Sadie is a nickname for Sarah.

So for your consideration, I’ve pulled together a list of ends-in-ie-names just might stand on their own.

I’m excluding choices like Katie and Maggie -  names easily connected to formal versions, as well as feminizations like Billie and Charlie.  And if it more commonly ends in -y, you won’t find it here – so no Mollie, Lillie or Lucie.

That still leaves bunches of names:

• Arlie – Arline started out as a well-born child kidnapped by gypsies in a nineteenth century opera, but today she’s the outdated Arlene.  Arlie might be a short form, or she may related to a surname.  Either way, she sounds fresher than the -een ending original.
• Birdie – Lady Bird was worn in the White House.  Actress Busy Phillips bestowed this avian appellation on her daughter.  While there are more subtle ways to evoke the finely feathered, Birdie isn’t quite unthinkable.
• Bonnie – Worn by the ill-fated daughter of Rhett and Scarlett in Gone With the Wind – who was actually named Eugenie Victoria.  She means pretty – and she is just that.
• Callie – If Kelly and Kaylee are independent given names for girls, why not Callie?  She’s also a possible nickname for classics like Caroline and Charlotte, as well as the less-expected Calla, Calista or Calliope.
• Dessie – In Ireland, Dessie is a nickname for Desmond – and thus, exclusively masculine.  In the US, it sounds more like a riff on Bessie.
• Dulcie – She’s sweet – literally, from the Latin dulcis.  Longer form Dulcinea conjures up the Judybats, Toad the Wet Sprocket and Don Quixote – though the literary Dulcinea was actually named Aldonza.
• Erie – Eir was a Norse goddess; Éire, a Celtic one – she lent her name to Ireland.  Eiry is a Welsh girl’s name – related names abound, all meaning snow.  Erie may be linked to any or none of the above, and could rhyme with fairy, or have a totally other pronunciation.
• Hattie – You might put Harriet or Henrietta on the birth certificate, but millinery references aside, Hattie has some style.
• Hettie – Another possibility for Henrietta,  as well as Hester or Hestia.
• Lettie – Formal name options include the salad-esque Lettice, or the lacy Letitia.  If Victorian valentine isn’t your style, Lettie might appeal.
• Lindie – Lucky Lindy was aviator Charles Lindbergh’s nickname.  The Lindy Hop was a swing-era dance craze named in his honor.  Linda is a Baby Boomer – as are elaborations like Melinda and Belinda.  But today, Lindie might work as a nickname for hippie chic tree name Linden – or on her own.
• Lottie – Charlotte is in the US Top 100 and rising, but it seems as very few Charlottes are answering to this nickname – so far.
• Maisie – Like Maggie, she could be a diminutive form of Margaret, via the Scottish Mairead.  But if Daisy stands on her own, maybe Maisie does, too.
• Millie – Mildred might be too dowdy to ever make a comeback, but Millie is Thoroughly Modern.  She’s also a spunky nickname for the super-sweet Millicent.
• Minnie – Yes, there’s the mouse.  But there’s also the actress – who was actually born Amelia Fiona Driver.
• Tillie – Matilda is ever so fashion forward.  Short form Tilda brings to mind the actress.  Then there’s Tillie – perhaps a bit too cute, but possibly wearable on her own.
• Trudie – It’s hard to imagine naming a daughter Gertrude.  But Trudie seems like a logical sister for Sadie – spunky, retro and not too flimsy to stand on her own.
• Zadie – If Sadie stands along, why not her zippy cousin?  The z-to-s switch has worked out just fine for novelist Zadie Smith.
• Zelie – There have definitely been women named Zelie, but her exact origins are unclear, though some link her to the French Zéline and she brings to mind the Yiddish Zelig.

I could go on – there’s Winnie and Elsie, Flossie and Roxie.  But I’ll stop here and just ask: would you consider a short, ends-in-ie name for a daughter?  And if so, would you put it on her birth certificate or opt for a more formal version?

I was looking up Edward Cullen on Wikipedia and I saw that it said that Edward was a Byronic hero. Because of that, I clicked on the link that explained what a Byronic hero was. Anyway, as I was reading the characteristics, it did sounds like Edward As I continued down the website, it mentioned that Lestat from the Vampire Chronicles and the Phantom from the Phantom of the Opera were Byronic heros as well, but I digress with the Phantom. That made me think about how much Lestat and Edward were alike in the sense that they are both Byronic heros. I think that’s the reason why I don’t like either character. I mean, it’s not that I hate them, but it’s just that they’re not my favorites characters from their respective series. Anyway, I think that’s the reason why I don’t like Lestat and Edward is the fact that they’re Byronic heros.

In my search for any Lestat vs. Edward stuff, I found quite a few pictures that made fun of Edward and the Twilight series or making fun of the fact the Twilight series “outshines” the Vampire Chronicles. The one that I found to be the most funny was the one where it showed Edward and Bella together in the first box, and the following three boxes showing Louis, Lestat, and Armand telling their opinions on the series. I found that Lestat’s and Armand’s reactions to be the most funny. Their reactions were classic Lestat and Armand. Anyway, the next one that I thought was funny was the one where Lestat as picking on Edward. I just found those funny. By the way, you can find the originals at this site.

IT’S been a difficult year for the Hams family.

Owners of one of Australia’s prominent dog breeding farms, Banksia Park Puppies, Colin Hams and son Matthew came under fire last June from Animal Liberation Victoria, who accused the Hams of animal cruelty and neglect.

The conflict came to a head when animal rights activist Debra Tranter entered the Stradbroke property during the night and Matthew Hams suffered injuries to his spine and ribcage after, the Hams allege, he was hit by Ms Tranter’s car. The drama also caused his father Colin to suffer a minor heart attack.

Ms Tranter faced Sale Magistrates Court this January on charges of assault with a weapon, reckless conduct endangering life and reckless conduct causing injury.

The charges were dismissed as the Magistrate ruled it was impossible to tell if Matthew Hams was in front of her car, or if she deliberately drove into him.

What continued from that June night was a war of words, as ALV launched an unyielding attack against the farm – formerly known as ACA Breeders Kennels – over the internet and through the media, with reports appearing in the Herald Sun, accusing the kennels of animal cruelty, of treating animals as property and contributing to the rising number of dogs ending up in shelters.

“I was an emotional wreck there for a while,” Colin said. “I was very affected by it all.

“For 20 years I’ve been in this business and then we have people coming here deliberately trying to flatten our reputation.

“But it’s made us rise to the occasion. We’re determined to fight for our reputation.”

Banksia Park Puppies will host an open day on Sunday from 10am to 3pm, where community members will be given tours through the premises, and will get to interact with the dogs.

Banksia Park is located on the South Gippsland Highway between Longford and Stradbroke.

 The Lost Dogs Home has beefed up security after threats by animal rights zealots to storm the shelter.  Managing director Graeme Smith said written threats posted on the internet forum sites made him fear for both the home’s staff and animals.

 Threats follow accusations of unnecessarily high death rates of stray cats and dogs at the Nth Melbourne pound.

“I have been forced to act to protect the safety of all life within our walls,” Dr. Smith said yesterday

 “First and foremost we are an animal pound, second to being and animal shelter, and we have a statutory obligation under our council contracts to protect and reunite, when possible lost and stray animals that come into our care.  For that reason we are using money raised as income through our pound contracts to meet the increased security and not utilizing donated dollars to meet these new extra costs.”

 Dr. Smith, a veterinarian and head of the home for more than two decades, blamed ‘unbalanced’ Sunday news reports for the controversy surrounding the shelter.

“These stories fail to recognize the read work of the home, to educate pet owners, which has led to be increases in the numbers of humans being reunited with their pets through registration and microchipping.”

 Dr. Smith said the Lost Dogs’ Home one of the biggest animal shelters in Australia and lower euthanasia rates than either Sydney or Brisbane and aimed to continue to lower it’s kill rates by 2 percent a year.
