For those interested in After Effects (which is something I have been dabbling with), I have found a great tutorial site called Video Copilot.net. It is presented by Andrew Kramer, and features many great tutorials dealing with Adobe After Effects. I made one over the weekend which featured an earth zoom animation, starting from an aerial shot over my house/neighborhood, and quickly zooming out into space. Stefan Einhorn, en fantastisk talare…

Torsdagen den 15:e oktober arrangerades en inspirationsdag på Nöjes
teatern i Malmö som inleddes av Stefan Einhorn och fortsatte med
Johan Fallby och Thomas Bergmark. Allt detta arrangerades av
Donna Carlsson tillsammans med oss andra på Academedia.

Jag var konferancier och fick säga några ord i början av dagen, det var
spännande eftersom jag inte hade förberett något. Jag gjorde också
några filmer som fick presentera in varje talare på scen, här är en av
dom :

Filmerna är starkt inspirerade från övningar hos videocopilot, jag
skulle alldrig hunnit göra alla 3 filmerna på 4 timmar om inte den
sidan fanns, Tack Andrew Cramer!

Tyvärr fanns inte så mycket tid att lägga på filmerna, men dom gjorde
sin effekt. Allt tekniskt klaffade under hela dagen och arrangemanget
var så bra! Tack Donna! Tack Hans! Tack Peter, fan va bra teamwork.

I’m a firm beleiver of doing it yourself.  In college, I did a lot of reading into different types of software.  Granted, I did major in Production Technology so I did learn a lot in class about video editing and documentry film but the most important thing you can do for yourself is go out there and do it on your own.  Final Cut Pro is where it all started for me.  After mastering FCPS2, another world opened up to me.  Adobe After Effects.  This is some really powerful software.  People who dont really know what this is  completely under estimate its potential.  That being said, the brand new CS4 suite w/o an academic discount is going to run you around $1k.  Or you can do what I like to call… never-mind.

Point of the story is this…  I’m no pro at AE but if you want to learn some basics you have to check out the  Video Copilot  website.  A guy named Andrew Kramer runs this site and you wont believe the crap he comes up with.  It’s pretty impressive.  He offers tutorials that will teach you AE from the ground up.  I’ve done a few of these tutorials and after completeing one or two of them you start to get a good understanding at how AE works and you begin to pick up on tricks that you can use in other projects.  When I was in college, this site was on my top five, and he is still dropping tutorials like every month.  Give it a whirl at www.videocopilot.net

Matt wrote this note about his latest fantastic work:

   “Hello Creepy Puppet Project fans! Here it is!! Hostile Entities, the most ambitious project to date. This was primarily a learning exercise for me with After FX software. I know the effects arent perfect, but this was what I was able to churn out on my computer.
   This particular project took MUCH longer that my previous films. Most of the time, I had to sit around and wait for layer upon layer of special effects to be rendered. I hope it was worth the wait and I really hope it is to your liking if not, well I at least learned a lot of technical stuff!
   I drew my inspiration from all the Sci-Fi stuff I loved as a kid Heavy Metal, Aliens, Star Wars and all that good stuff! I also had fun revisiting my old WarHammer 40K tool kit when I built the miniature ship interior sets. It was like I was a teenager again! FUN! Some of my long time friends may recognize the ship model from my Voyage of Vulture 0111 mini series I produced on Maclean Hunter cable back in the late 80s.
   A HUGE THANK YOU to Ralph Gethings for his technical support and giving me the seed idea for this project.
   A HUGE THANK YOU to Andrew Kramer at VIDEO COPILOT for the greatest After FX tutorials online!

One of the discussions that will continue to occur on this blog, and many other places, is what constitutes a web series?   When does online get placed into the category of web series?

Here are a few ways to differentiate:

• Created specifically for the internet.  (Family Guy on Hulu is not a web series)
• Recurring/episodic

A short list, I know.

This creates a very large umbrella for content to fall under.  But if you think about it, so does the categorization “TV Show”.  And honestly, that is still one of the best comparisons.  There are reality shows, documentaries, scripted drama, DIY shows, sitcoms, and much more.  As long as it is on TV and recurs, it’s a TV show.  As long as it is online and recurs, it’s a web series.

Obviously there are smaller categories under this umbrella, but for our purposes this seems most applicable.  Feel free to debate me if you disagree.

On this point, I want to show something that some may not consider a web series, but by the above definition, it clearly is.  This is a great little show that aims to explain complex concepts in a manner in which people can clearly understand it.  It is a great series and incredibly educational.  It’s a DIY show, similar to anything seem on HGTV.  Therefore, Video Copilot’s tutorials can also be considered a web series, or any tutorial series.

However, the video brings up a great point I will touch on in the near future.  How do web series and social media work together?  Is Youtube a network that broadcasts a series, or is at a form of advertising for a series?  This question is much more complex than it seems on the surface.

Just saw “Wanted” on Canaday Day weekend, good clean summer fun without bogging us down with a complicated story. It was like a film school creole of Fight Club, Matrix and Equilibrium’s imaginative gun play.

I was looking around to figure out who did the visual effects because the “curving Bullet Shot” in the trailer resembles the Video Copilot’s Tutorial THE BULLET

that I just did but there wasn’t much info except for this article from the VFXWorld

Pra quem curte After Effects, é um prato cheio. Trata-se de um site/blog de um grupo de rapazes que sabem fazer videografismo no After e resolveram compartilhar um pouco de seus conhecimentos e recursos com o mundo.

O site dispõe de uma seção pra iniciantes entenderem o básico do programa, com tutoriais em vídeo explicando processos e dando dicas ao longo. Possui também uma seção de tutoriais de produção, ensinando a criar certos efeitos muito vistos hoje, com qualidade pra serem usados em TV/Cinema. Também dispõe de alguns presets pra After, que eles explicam como usar em alguns dos tutoriais.

Mas o principal do VideoCopilot são seus produtos — DVDs contendo footage criados por eles, já com alpha pronto, em alta definição e fps alto. Volutas animadas, espirros de tinta, elementos de grafite e essas coisas tendenciosas que estão em alta hoje… João Velho que me desculpe, mas às vezes agente tem que usar coisas prontas sim. Além disso, tem uns DVDs com efeitos sonoros e outros com filtros cinematográficos e efeitos de produção. Coisas que agente até poderia fazer, mas já que alguem já fez, pq não usufruir ? Ainda mais com essa qualidade toda.

A partir de cas concrets, il vous explique comment transformer des scènes de jour en scènes de nuit, à réaliser des effets spéciaux de films d’horreur (morphings en zombies, effets d’oeil sans pupille, bestioles qui passent sous la peau etc…), à simuler des zooms de caméras à l’intérieur du corps humain ou à animer des globules avec des générateurs de particules. Le dernier tutoriel en date consiste à transformer une scène normale en scène de grand froid et à ajouter de la vapeur qui sort de la bouche en suivant le mouvement et la respiration. Mais je vous laisse juger par vous-même de l’incroyable collection de tutoriaux hébergés sur ce site, qui est très vite venu s’ajouter à mes favoris !
En oûtre, vous trouverez sur le site quelques ressources à acheter, telles que des motifs floraux en haute définition qui semblent “pousser”, des bruitages et sons professionnels, des textures et des presets pour AfterEffect : le tout est réutilisable à l’infini, libre de droits et à un prix plus qu’abordable ! Alors, convaincu ?
