G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra is a 2009 American live-action film adaptation of the G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero toy franchise. The film is directed by Stephen Sommers, produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura and co-written by Stuart Beattie, based on a 1998 screenplay by John Paul Kay. G.I. Joe features an ensemble cast based on the various characters of the franchise. The story follows two American soldiers, Duke and Ripcord, who join the G.I. Joe Team after being attacked by Cobra troops.

After leaked drafts of the script were criticized by fans, Larry Hama, main writer of the Real American Hero comic, was hired as creative consultant and many rewrites were made. Filming took place in Downey, California and Prague’s Barrandov Studios, and six different companies handled the visual effects. The film was released through August 5 to 7, 2009 worldwide. Despite The Rise of Cobra having mixed critical reviews, it opened at the top of the box office, and has grossed over $298 million worldwide. A sequel is planned.

Hace cosa de un año encontré por la página de videos online más conocida de la red una parodia que Seth MacFarlane hacía de uno de los grandes héroes de videojuego que han existido (y, posiblemente, que existirán), el genial Mario.

Pues bien, rizando el rizo, MacFarlane editó una recopilación en DVD de todos los cortos que componían su Cavalcade of Cartoon Comedy y lo hizo añadiendo las palabras “uncensored version”, con lo que podéis imaginaros lo que ello significa. En el caso que nos concierne, el cambio únicamente se centra en el diálogo pero resulta más que evidente para los que capten ciertas expresiones en inglés.

El tema los Mario Brothers (o Bros.) ha hecho estrujarse los cerebros a más de un internauta, y para muestra de ello están las miriadas de vídeos que corren por la red. De todos los que he visto ha habido uno que me ha hecho reir por su originalidad. Quizá el tema sea de lo más común, pero ver que Luigi se queja por ser un sidekick me parece genial.

Sin embargo, no olvidemos que si por algo se conoce a Seth MacFarlane en nuestro país es por la serie de animación Family Guy (Padre de familia) que, como en su época ocurrió con Los Simpsons, solamente tiene detractores o fans y ambos son de lo más extremos ya que si hay algo que caracteriza a la serie es la falta total de escrúpulos ni vergüenza para mostrar la decadencia de la clase media americana sin dejar títere con cabeza.

No obstante, como ocurre siempre en estas series, existen capítulos sublimes que hacen que una temporada entera valga la pena solamente por ellos. Es el caso del multiverso en el que sumergen Brian y Stewie Griffin (perro y bebé de la familia para los no iniciados) al inicio de la octava temporada. ¿Alguien se ha preguntado alguna vez como serían los Griffin en el maravilloso mundo de Walt Disney?

Hace 20 años Games Workshop publicó por primera vez un juego que se convirtió en algo más que un pasatiempo de sobremesa. Algunos lo conocimos más tarde pero nos entusiasmó igualmente, y ahora vuelve a estar en las estanterías de las tiendas dedicadas al mundo de los juegos con miniaturas. Estoy hablando de Space Hulk.

La historia del juego era y sigue siendo sencilla: una unidad de Marines Espaciales se adentra en el interior de una nave espacial abandonada en el espacio (algo conocido también como pecio) donde encuentran MUCHÍSIMOS ejemplares de una de las razas enemigas de la humanidad, los Genestealers (conocidos también como robagenes), dispuestos a no dejarles salir de allí sin pagar un alto precio.

Con motivo de este vigésimo aniversario, la empresa inglesa ha decidido reeditar el juego haciendo una una edición limitada a la que ha asignado el módico precio de 78€ (lo cual lo convierte en algo casi prohibido para las nuevas generaciones siempre que no sean sus progenitores quienes lo compren) manteniendo el reglamento y cambiando las miniaturas que, dicho sea de paso, tienen un aspecto precioso y han evolucionado acorde con la nueva imagen de Warhammer 40.000.

Como es de suponer, ahora se inicia una gran campaña de marketing por parte Games Workshop para intentar hacer llegar la noticia a los antiguos jugadores (entre los que me incluyo y seguramente más uno de los que lean este artículo también) de forma que, aunque sea por nostalgia, los que no tengan aquellas primeras ediciones con sus expansiones, puedan tener ahora esta nueva versión del juego. Algo parecido a lo que ya hicieron hace unos años con otro de sus grandes juegos (si obviamos Warhammer y su versión futurista) como fue Blood Bowl.

Para ir abriendo boca, en la página web de Games Workshop han publicado unos bonitos artículos donde se muestra el contenido de la caja y el desarrollo de una partida. Se trata de los típicos documentos en los que ves como funciona el juego, te ponen la piel de gallina con algunas figuras pintadas (las de la caja vienen en matrices de plástico para montar y luego, si uno es suficientemente hábil como es mi caso, pintar a mano).

Visto todo esto, creo que ha llegado el momento de ir empezando a escribir la wish list de cada año con las cosas que me gustaría que me regalaran, y estoy casi seguro de que junto a la edición especial en DVD de Watchmen, la adaptación animada de los Relatos del Navío Negro (parte de la novela gráfica que no se incluyó en el metraje final de Watchmen) y el Cómic Completo Animado de Watchmen, se encontrará la caja de la que estamos hablando.

Como siempre, una cosa es lo que yo incluyo en la lista y otra lo que acaban regalándome…

Margaret Tate (Sandra Bullock) is the executive editor-in-chief of a book publishing company, Colden Books, who forces her assistant Andrew Paxton (Ryan Reynolds) to marry her in order to avoid being deported to Canada. He grudgingly accepts, under the condition that he is promoted to the position of editor. When the government investigates, the two are forced to spend the weekend with his parents in Alaska in order to sell the lie. The family suggest they could marry the same weekend, and they reluctantly accept. They start to fall genuinely in love as they spend more and more time together. Because of this, during the wedding ceremony, Margaret decides she cannot do this to Andrew and confesses the business arrangement in front of everyone–including the immigration officer handling their case. She is then told that she has 24 hours to get back to Canada, and thus goes back to New York to pack her things. Upon doing so, however, Andrew shows up at the office and confesses his love for her in front of the entire office staff, proposing marriage all over again.

When high-powered book editor Margaret faces deportation to her native Canada, the quick-thinking exec declares that she’s actually engaged to her unsuspecting put-upon assistant Andrew, who she’s tormented for years. He agrees to participate in the charade, but with a few conditions of his own. The unlikely couple heads to Alaska to meet his quirky family and the always-in-control city girl finds herself in one comedic fish-out-of-water situation after another. With an impromptu wedding in the works and an immigration official on their tails, Margaret and Andrew reluctantly vow to stick to the plan despite the precarious consequences.

Jennifer’s Body is a 2009 dark comedy and horror film written by Diablo Cody. The film is directed by Karyn Kusama, and stars Megan Fox as the title character, Amanda Seyfried as her best friend Needy, and Adam Brody as the antagonist Nikolai. It is scheduled for theatrical release in the United States and Canada on September 18, 2009.

Jennifer Check (Megan Fox) is the sexy, popular captain of the high school cheerleading squad. All of the girls want to be friends with her, and all of the boys want to have sex with her. Jennifer’s friend since childhood, Anita “Needy” Lesnicky (Amanda Seyfried), is a nerdy, substantially less popular, “plain jane” student. Jennifer ends up as the sacrifice in a Satanic ritual, held by a rock band, hoping that the sacrifice will increase their chances of getting a record deal. The ritual goes horribly wrong, causing Jennifer to get possessed by a demon and start feeding off of the boys in her high school; First seducing them to get close, and then consuming them in a manner similar to that of a Succubus. It becomes Needy’s goal to stop Jennifer from killing more of her classmates.

Demon possession, devilish cheerleaders, and Satanic rock stars are all on the chopping block with this horror comedy from the production team behind Juno. Screenwriter Diablo Cody provides the script, with producing duties handled by Jason Reitman and Dan Dubiecki. Girlfight’s Karyn Kusama directs the Fox Atomic production.

The film opens with Justine Fielding (Tuppence Middleton) being escorted out of school by the police, as other pupils look on. It then has a flashback to 5 days earlier, where Justine is reading at the funeral of Darren Mullett (Calvin Dean). She starts to talk about him, when Jason Banks (Olly Alexander) stands up in church and calls her a hypocrite because she didn’t really know him. He is then thrown out of church by the sadistic PE teacher.

Later on, Justine is talking to her friend Helena (Mary Nighy) about staying in and watching a Keira Knightley DVD, when Alexis (Dimitri Leonidas) decides to invite her to a party his friends Bradley (Alex Pettyfer), Tasha (April Pearson), Kally (Larissa Wilson), Sophie (Georgia King), and Marcus (Tom Hopper) are having. She decides to go to the party, rather than staying in with Helena.

At the party, Justine arrives and Tasha tells Jez, the DJ to say something about her appearance. He begins to rap about her, when Alexis tells him to stop, and he is thrown out of the party by Bradley. Later, Alexis and Justine go somewhere quiet, and he tells her they are on a date, at which point they kiss. Bradley, Tasha, Kally, Marcus and Sophie all receive horrible text messages from Mullett’s number. During this, someone puts on a clown costume and grabs a chainsaw, before heading up to the room where they are kissing. The figure is revealed to be Bradley, who is playing a prank on them.

Jez goes to the cemetery to celebrate Mullett’s death, and urinates on his grave, but is killed by an unseen figure, who stabs him with a cross. Later, the group have a toast to Mullett’s life, and Justine reveals that she can’t even remember who he is.

The next day, they arrive at school, and the headmaster mentions that Jez never came home the night before. Bradley threatens another pupil about removing a website he had put up about him. Justine is persuaded to hang around with the cool gang, and tells Helena that she won’t be able to make it to her Keira Knightley DVD evening. She finds a teddy bear (stolen from Mullett’s grave) in her locker and assumes it is from Alexis. He asks her on another date after this, which she agrees to. She goes to see Jason and he tells her that Mullett was in love with her, and hands her his suicide note. While she is reading the note, a teacher tells her that she will make a great pupil at Oxford university.

The pupil threatened by Bradley is then attacked, and sees Mullett’s ghost, but is listening to music through headphones, and the loud music sends him deaf.

Over the course of the day, the gang get more messages, and Bradley believes Jason is sending them. Jason, meanwhile is in art class, and the teacher tells everyone that the guillotine is faulty and they shouldn’t touch it. A boy sent by Bradley fetches him out of class, and then Bradley and Marcus chase him into the gym, where they give him a wedgie, but are interrupted by another message, meaning Jason cannot have sent it. The sadistic PE teacher then arrives and gives Jason detention. The girls decide that Helena has been sending the messages and attack her. Sophie tells Justine that she should sleep with Alexis that night, but goes back into the swimming pool, where she is attacked by Mullett’s ghost and drowns.

Later that night, Justine and Alexis sleep together, but are seen by Mullett, who tears the badge from her uniform, and re-arranges her fridge magnets, calling her a slut. She returns to school and shows Alexis the suicide note, but his friends tell her she cannot hand it into the police, because she would implicate herself in his death.

Marcus is then in PE class, where he sees Mullett’s ghost, and the teacher tells him to go and have a shower, just as the art teacher arrives and tells the head that they have found Sophie’s body. In the shower, he is whipped with a towel by the ghost of Mullett. He manages to fight him off and heads outside, running into Helena, who accuses him of trying to rape her because he is semi naked. He manages to get outside, and is impaled upon a fence by the ghost.

Later on, the gang are at Bradley’s house, and they have an argument, where Tasha and Justine get into a fight, and Justine is thrown into the swimming pool. Bradley decides to go and dig Mullett’s body up at the cemetery.

While he is there, Tasha gets drunk in his car, and invites him to have sex with her. During the act, Mullett appears and pulls him out of the car, and kills him. Tasha runs away, but falls into an open grave, where she lies to Mullett that she fancied him, causing him to decapitate her with a shovel.

Justine goes home, and demands that Alexis shows her the site, where it is revealed that he is one of the bullies, and that she was rude to Mullett because he interrupted a conversation about her going to Oxford. She tells Alexis that he is deceitful and a liar, and that their relationship is over.

The next day, she arrives at the art class, where Jason painted Munch’s “The Scream” painting, and tells him that she was responsible for Mullett’s death. He tells her that it has been his fault, because he was scared of being bullied, so he told Bradley that Mullett fancied her. She leaves the room, and Mullett appears, and kills him by jamming two pencils up his nose and slamming his head against the table.

Justine approaches Helena and tells her that she is sorry, that her friends, including Alexis were all horrible. Kally runs over and asks her where Tasha is, but Justine tells her she doesn’t care. Kally then gets a text message from Tasha telling her to meet her in the art room.

Before Justine can follow, she is confronted by Alexis, who tells her he is going to kill Mullett for what he has done to everyone. Justine tells him that Kally is in danger. Kally gets to the art room, and sees “The Scream” with her name on it, at which point Mullett puts a bag over her head, before using the guillotine to slice her hands off. She tries to call the headteacher, but he is too busy with the police, who tell him that Justine’s badge has been found near the bodies of Bradley and Tasha.

They get to the art room, and find Jason’s and Kally’s bodies, but are attacked by Mullett. They break free, by stabbing him in the stomach with a screwdriver and head to the common room, where Mullett follows them. Alexis tries to stop him, but is stabbed in the hand with the screwdriver. Justine gets him to stop, but he begins to choke her to death. She grabs his inhaler and throws it across the room, telling Alexis to smash it. He does, and the ghost begins to die.

Justine tells Alexis to leave, but he punches Mullett, knocking a sofa over, and finding Mullett’s other inhaler, which Mullett then uses. Mullett then stabs Alexis in the throat with the screwdriver. As Justine cradles his body, she looks up at Mullett, disgusted and says “You know what, they were right, you do look like fucking Shrek!”, just as the police arrive. Justine is then led out and into the police car seen earlier, having been arrested for the murders. She sees Mullett’s ghost but then it disappears.

Eastwick is a new TV series based on The Witches of Eastwick novel by John Updike and the subsequent movie with Jack Nicholson, Cher, Michelle Pheiffer, and Susan Sarandon. The season premiere was on last night (Sept. 23rd) at 10pm on ABC. The new cast has Rebecca Romijn, Lindsey Price, and Jaime Ray Newman as the three lovely witches and Canadian Paul Gross as Darryl Van Horne, aka “The Devil” (and a fine man in black he makes). The story is centered around three women Roxanne, Joanna, and Kat in the small New England town of Eastwick who meet while all making a wish at a fountain.

The first episode opens with “Enchanted Eastwick” storytime. The local storyteller dressed as a witch is sitting in a park telling a tale to the children sitting at her feet while the three women find mysterious coins and are all drawn to make a wish at the fountain in the park:

“There is a place at the edge of New England, an every day sort of town. But if you look beneath the hum drum surface what you’ll find here is something quite surprising. Because once upon a time the women who lived in our town were said to have certain special gifts. That is before they were burned by those nice pilgrims. Of course nowadays we know better than to believe in witchcraft, we call it silly superstition and lies. But just for a moment let’s wonder ‘what if?’  What if the legends are actually true? What if the gifted ones are still here among us, only they don’t even know what they are. They might spend their entire lives sensing they are somehow different, but they have no idea just how different they are.

Sometimes those with the most powerful abilities are hiding in the most unlikely places. They want to believe they are just like everyone else, but as much as they try to deny true magic, it’s always there. In fact, some of you may have the gift and not even know it. Your power might be sleeping inside you ready to wake up when the time is right. When you least expect it.  All it takes is the right place and time. When those with the gift are brought together in just the right way their power can finally awaken and they will be drawn to one another like magnets. And at last they will know what they really are and it will change their lives forever…”

Then the storyteller goes on about the forces of darkness and is attacked by ants and has a stroke… which is better than puking up cherry pits, minus the stroke. Yes, it’s the same actress Veronica Cartwright getting picked on again as a nod to the original Witches of Eastwick film. Remember the wishing well? The three women share their wishes from each other, and in the first episode they all come true, but of course the women realize too late they should’ve been more careful what they wished for when Paul Gross comes to town on a wind of wealth and arrogant sexiness and buys up all the local businesses. Paul Gross as the devil is charming, handsome, forward, funny, and creepy in a sinister evil way. In no time he has the women hypnotized, letting go of their inhibitions and testing out their powers.

I found an interesting anecdote about Eastwick — Rebecca Romijn was interviewed by Conan O’Brien on the Tonight Show Tuesday night and he asked her if she had been reading up on any real witchcraft “because there are a lot of people out there that believe in witchcraft “. She answered that yes, the cast had actually cast three spells: “one to get the show picked up, one to get some hair and makeup people we wanted, and one to get a time slot we wanted” and that they all worked…

Eastwick is hard to classify, it’s mostly comedy with bits of drama, horror and fantasy mixed in. The witches powers are a bit like superpowers: Roxanne, a starving artist, has psychic visions of the future; Joanna, an uptight writer for the local paper, can get men to do anything she says just by looking into their eyes; and Kat, a nurse with a deadbeat husband and five kids, can control the elements of nature. I’d like to see if the “true magic” mentioned in the narrated introduction comes out more in the stories, maybe even some little bits of real lore. They’ve already got me happy with strange “coincidences”, a little inclusion that fate can be unavoidable, and the three witches being drawn together by the black man’s influence like the real legends, but we have John Updike to thank for that. While predictable so far, it is a fun show and I’ll be continuing to watch the series to see where it goes and just how clever the Devil really is…

Based on the Sookie Stackhouse novels by Charlaine Harris, the True Blood TV series is sexy wild ride into a world where vampires and humans coexist, vampires having won legal rights to be accepted members of society after a Japanese scientist invents synthetic blood. Despite their status as fellow citizens, vampires are still persecuted and their coexistance challenged… poor creatures… or are they? The vampires of True Blood are ancient and sophisticated, hardened from centuries to millennia of violence and torture. They have their own world, their own leaders, their own justice, their own hierarchies from a global to a local scale.  The vampires of True Blood are some of the best I’ve ever seen, dangerous complicated individuals, who can be surprisingly “human” at times and terrifyingly monstrous at others. But vampires aren’t the only supernatural beings in this TV series which also features shapeshifters, psychics, and ancient demi-gods.

True Blood focuses on the people and vampires living in the small Southern town of Bon Temps, Lousiana. The lead character is Sookie Stackhouse, a young waitress at the local bar Merlotte’s whose psychic ability to read people’s minds seems to constantly put her in compromising situations. Sookie looks and speaks like a sweet Southern belle, but underneath she is one smart tough cookie who is fearless when it comes to protecting her loved ones. The stories of True Blood revolve around Sookie’s friends and family in Bon Temps and all the crazy things that happen to the people in the town… but I don’t want to give anything away.

True Blood is sexy, violent, intelligent, funny and addictive. I honestly didn’t think I’d like this series as I didn’t hear the best reviews of the books, but once I started watching the characters were so good they drew me into their stories and I had to find out what happened in the next episode, and the next, and the next… And now I’ve gotten my man Mojo addicted too! Each season is based on one of the Sookie Stackhouse books so the episodes are a continuous story, not individual episodes with tidy endings. Each show leaves you with a cliffhanger and music to give you shivers leaving you wanting more. Highly recommended to adult fans of vampires and the magic and mystery of the deep South. ♥

The big-screen adaptation of Twilight, Stephenie Meyer’s bestselling vampire romance, is aimed squarely at its key demographic: teen girls whose idea of Prince Charming is a brooding, pale, undead teen who could kill you instantly at any moment. Such a prince is more fascinating than frightening to new girl Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart), who moves to the rainy-gray town of Forks, Wash., to live with her dad (Billy Burke), the local sheriff who’s puzzled by a series of “animal attacks.” On her first day at school, Bella appears to (visibly) nauseate her lab partner, Edward (Robert Pattinson).

Turns out the scent of her blood is this vampire’s “brand of heroin,” and his struggle not to kill her causes an irresistible pull toward her. Whether he’s attracted for the normal reasons or because she smells especially sweet to him is vague in the book and even less clear on-screen; nonetheless, Bella falls hopelessly in love with Edward, which sets her on a dangerous path when a few nomad vampires show up in town, one particularly keen on tracking the human.

Directed by Catherine Hardwicke (Thirteen), Twilight is full of funny moments not all of which are intentional and the casting, from Stewart to Bella’s self-absorbed friend Jessica (Anna Kendrick) is spot-on. The weakest link, unfortunately, is Pattinson. While he certainly looks the part, his Edward could have used an extra injection of testosterone (Pattinson, who is British, used James Dean as a model for his American accent). In scenes where he growls about the temptation to kill those who would harm Bella, or flitting around a forest warning her how dangerous he is, he comes off more like a whimpering puppy than a debonair monster. The good news is, his chemistry with Stewart (particularly in their big kissing scene) is palpable, which, let’s face it, is really what matters to Twilight fans most.

Anoche fuimos a ver Watchmen (ya puse cosillas por aquí en un post anterior) y, al contrario que a César y Yosi, me gustó.

Supongo que el hecho haber leído antes la novela gráfica influye mucho en la decisión final sobre la película, especialmente porque hay viñetas fielmente reflejadas (como el Comediante saliendo disparado por la ventana de su apartamento o el momento en que Rorschach explica la historia de los perros, tranquilos que no os chafo nada).

La historia se hace lenta, igual que en la novela gráfica, pero no olvida ningún detalle. Quizá incluso se añaden cosas prescindibles (ese polvo dento de Archie), pero no se olvida nada de lo que realmente importa. Son casi tres horas de película en la que existen escenas MUY violentas (prestad atención a las luchas callejeras), y otras en las que el diálogo es lo más importantepor lo que creo que es una adaptación muy fiel del trabajo del tándem Moore-Gibbons.

Acepto que no guste a muchos y no entiendo a los que, no gustándoles la novela gráfica original van a ver la película y luego dicen que no les ha gustado. De todas formas, creo que merece la pena verla para poder juzgar el trabajo de carcterización de Billy Crudup y Jackie Earle Haley (los más destacados a mi parecer). Quizá el maquillaje para envejecer a algunos actores (por ejemplo Carla Gugino) se pudiera mejorar, pero aún así resulta efectivo.

Recordad que, como dice Edward Blake, “todo en esta vida es una puta broma pesada”.

Rome ~ The Complete First Two Seasons

If you are a pagan and have not heard of or watched Rome yet, you must – it is soooooo good, even better than you can possibly imagine. HBO gave the producers free reign and a lot of money to reconstruct the Roman world during the time of Julius Caesar down to the last detail for the City of Rome, the style of dress, and most importantly — the religion of the ancient Romans. Everything from folk-practices of the lower classes to an elaborate ritual of bull sacrifice by nobility. When you watch Rome, you feel as if you have time travelled and are able to see into the daily lives of polytheists. Scholars and historians have reviewed Rome with a thumbs up for accuracy of portrayal of the Roman’s religion.

The story lines for the show are also amazing, shocking, twisting, and sometimes resembling a well thought out soap opera reminding me of Shakespeare’s King Lear and Macbeth – character studies. The characters are brutal, violent, beautiful, surprising, and always reminding the viewer how different their world is from ours of today. Follow the tales of Julius Caesar, Marc Anthony, Cleopatra, and Roman soldiers Lucius Verenus and Titus Pullo. Rome will shock you, draw you in, you will fall in love with some characters and hate others with a fierce passion. But above all, you will want to follow the story and the characters to the very end and then wish it wasn’t over.

There is talk of a movie in the works, but unfortunately Rome will never be resurrected for another season. The special features make purchasing these two seasons worthwhile – there are documentaries on the making of the show, history lessons, commentary, and a neat feature that turns the episodes into a type of informative pop-up video (for those Canadians who remember pop-up videos from MuchMoreMusic).

Whether you are a Greco-Roman reconstructionist, an Italian witch following La Vecchia Religione, a Wiccan, Neopagan, or witch – you will love Rome for the storytelling and beauty of it alone. To see an ancient religion portrayed without bias or judgement on tv is a rare occurrance and a wonderful one. Enjoy Rome!

One Piece – Season 1, First Voyage – Monkey D. Luffy (rhymes with “goofy”), the hero of this popular shonen (boys’) series, is determined to make himself King of the Pirates by finding the fabulous treasure of the legendary pirate Gold Roger. In the first episodes, Luffy begins to assemble his crew, recruiting master swordsman Zoro and ace navigator Nami. In flashbacks, the viewer also learns how he acquired his trademark straw hat from the noble pirate Shanks. Because Luffy once ate a “Devil Fruit,” his body and limbs can stretch almost infinitely to deliver staggering kicks and punches. With his frog-like face, skinny legs and outsized feet, Luffy is hardly a handsome hero. But his honesty, unswerving dedication, and kind heart win him friends wherever he goes.

Although series creator Eiichiro Oda cites Dragon Ball as an influence, One Piece has a much cartoon-ier feel. The Straw Hat Pirates tackle a bizarre-looking array of foes that includes iron-jawed Captain Morgan, Captain Buggy of the Clown Pirates, and Jango, the moon-walking hypnotist of the Black Cat Pirates.Oda says that One Piece is the story he wanted to read as a boy. Millions of others loved that story: the broadcast series ran for more than 350 episodes and spun off nine features. One Piece debuted in America 2004 in a heavily edited version from 4Kids that made little sense. Hace diez años un amigo me dejó dos novelas gráficas para que las leyera con calma. La primera me enamoró desde la segunda página, donde se explicaba la historia de Guy Fawkes de una forma muy resumida. Luego se desarrollaba una tremenda y genialmente urdida trama por medio de la maquiavélica mente de Alan Moore que daba cuerpo a la novela gráfica V de Vendetta, llevada al cine hace poco y con buena crítica.

La segunda de esas novelas gráficas, con guión del mismo autor, era más dura y rebuscada si cabe. Se titulaba Watchmen y era una auténtica joya tanto por su elaboradísimo guión como por el dibujo y el color. Reconozco que me costó entrar en la historia, pero una vez que superas la frontera y conoces a los personajes acabas por meterte de lleno y disfrutas de todo lo que se explica.

Hace un par de años empezó a correr el rumor de que se iba a llevar al cine una adaptación de Watchmen pero que la plantilla de actores y actrices no serían demasiado conocidos. Finalmente, dado el tiempo que ha pasado, algunos de ellos son ya conocidos en la pantalla grande (¡qué pedazo de tòpico!).

Ahora solo nos queda esperar hasta el día 6 de marzo, diez días de nada, para poder disfrutar (vistos los tráilers) de un buen rato de cine. Espero que las casi tres horas no se hagan largas a nadie.

Hace un par de años descubrí una serie de televisión que me enamoró. Bueno, para ser sincero, me atrajo mucho una película así como el comentario que sobre ella hizo Bill Bridges, uno de los diseñadores del juego de rol Fading Suns, diciendo que era lo más parecido a la ambientación que él querría para su juego. Estoy hablando de la película Serenity que cerraba la serie Firefly.

La serie es una de las más inteligentes que he visto en mucho tiempo, y me enamoró al cuarto de hora del primer capítulo. El creador, Joss Whedon, (también es responsable de otras series de éxito como fueron Buffy, Cazavampiros o Angel) consigue que los personajes te lleguen y que les cojas un aprecio que te deja con ganas de más al final de cada capítulo. Los guiones son divertidos, con giros inesperados y con diálogos llenos de ironía. Incluso hay escenas que serían serias si no fuera porque al final se le da un toque que hace que todo lo anterior pierda la pomposidad que había obtenido.

La serie fue cancelada por Fox pero las ganas de no dejar a sus seguidores con la historia a medias hizo que Whedon nos regalara la película.

Ahora que la estamos revisitando en casa, aún me gusta más y espero que vosotros la descubráis también para que la disfrutéis. Mi búsqueda me llevó a visitar tiendas por Barcelona y finalmente la encontré en Freaks Cine, pero me negué a pagar los más de 120€ que pedían por ella. Ante la imposibilidad de poder encontrar una edición hecha aquí (la de Freaks era la americana) seguí buscando por internet y encontré los capítulos en varias páginas en formato .avi, pero finalmente descargué unos archivos .rat que contenían la imagen .iso de los DVDs de la serie. ¡Genial! Los gravé en soporte físico y disfruté de la serie como un enano. Eso sí, en versión original porque la traducción al “español” que usan en México me pareció horrible.
