The Red Sox are dealing with some injury issues that have shaken up their lineup, and utility infielder Pedro Ciraco has gotten the chance to prove his worth.

Ciriaco got the starting nod at third base on Saturday with Will Middlebrooks on the 15-day disabled list with a back strain. Ciriaco made his presence felt with a big double to kick off the eighth inning in his first two-hit game since April.

I’m feeling nostalgic today so I posted 2 incredible videos.

The first one (top) is called RIDING THE BOOSTER and that’s just what you are doing as multiple cameras fitted to the Solid Rocket Boosters fire you off the pad from different angles. The Shuttle breaks the sound barrier at 1:15, boosters fire away from the shuttle at 1:57 and after the eerie sounds of free fall chutes deploy and you impact the Atlantic Ocean at 7:20…….You will not be disappointed.

The second video is called ASCENT, Commemoration the Space Shuttle and its 45 minutes of extreme slow motion launch pad sequence; 400 frames per second to be exact and this experience WILL open your eyes to never seen before details during a space shuttle launch. The incredible footage starts at 2:35 minutes and gets better from there.

Methods

• Persons downloading and using the app independently. App activity is tracked with Google Analytics.
• Getting more users by:
  - hanging posters in public places (on several campuses, in bar/restaurant,…);
  - asking friends in person to use the app;
  - mail (approximately 1200);
  - Facebook (approximately 150);
  - Twitter (tweets directly to persons approximately 4500; in addition, hashtags like #kuleuven, #app, #iPhone, #iTunes,…  are used).
• Users are asked to fill in a questionnaire (system usability scale) and if they have any remarks about the app.

Rationale

• Google Analytics can be used to check if persons using the app are able to find and use all core functionality (goal 1).
• We use the questionnaire to:
  - get a quantified idea of the usability of the application (goal 2);
  - be able to compare the usability of this and last iteration.

Who, when, where

22 people installed and launched the app during this fourth iteration (May 8th to May 25th), adding to a total of 31 since launch (April 27th). 8 of 22 filled in our questionnaire. The image below shows a map of Flanders indicating the places where the app is used since launch. Aside from Flanders, to a lesser extent, the app is used in the Netherlands, China and the United States as well.

Remarks by the users

1. It’s not possible to remove a request once posted. (n=1)
2. User asked if it’s possible to expand the app with songs. (n=1)
3. User asked for customisation with other background colours. (n=1)

Google Analytics (data from May 8th to May 25th)

1. 20% of all persons downloading and installing the app stopped using the app when asked to log in.
2. 30% of all persons logged in drop off at the home view (image 2).

3. First thing new users check out:
   - 50% look at a suggestion shown in the activity stream;
   - 17% make a new suggestion;
   - 17% make a new request;
   - 16% look at a request shown in the activity stream.
4. When asked in-app, no user opted to invite a friend via Facebook to use uAdvise.

Other data

• During iteration 4 (May 8th to May 25th):
  - 20 suggestions,
  - 17 requests
  are done by 22 users.
• Since public launch (April 27th):
  - 52 suggestions,
  - 33 requests
  are done by 31 users.

Note that persons who have dropped off at the login screen are included in the number of users.

Questionnaire

• Iteration 2 (6 evaluations): median is 75.
• Iteration 3 (7 evaluations): median is 85.
• Iteration 4 (8 evaluations): median is 86.25.

Remarks by users

We think both remark 1 and 3 are good examples of providing the user with freedom to interact with the app the way they want. In addition, it’s rather easy to implement these changes, but before doing so, it would take more user evaluations to check for instance if users don’t just want to delete their own requests, but their suggestions as well.

Remark 2 is something we don’t consider at the moment. It doesn’t fit with the other types of entertainment the app supports: series, movies and books are more time-consuming compared to a song of a few minutes. It doesn’t feel right to wait a day, for instance, for a friend to reply to your music request, as it would take just a few minutes to listen to that recommended song. Also, it’s more common to associate artists with a song rather than genres, so music has less common ground with series, movies and books.

Google Analytics

1. Some persons might find it intimidating to log in with their Facebook account. Possible reasons:
   - doubting the way their passwords are handled;
   - afraid to get their Facebook wall spammed.
2. While we think it’s clear what the app does, it might scare users who don’t know what the suggest and request buttons (image 2) do. Rather than exploring the app, they choose to leave. A possible solution could be to show a very short tutorial the first time a user logs in.
3. These numbers (see results) lie within the range of expectation. Approximately 66% look at the activity stream first before suggesting or requesting something themselves. The suggest and request buttons are used equally.
4. While inviting friends via Facebook could help spreading the word about the app, people choose not to proceed and as such not post the invitational message on Facebook. We expect, as stated at ’1.’, that it feels to them like they are spamming their friend’s Facebook wall. More evaluations should be conducted to find more specific motivations behind this restraint and possible solutions.

Questionnaire

The median of all questionnaires of iteration 4 is 86.25. This is a small improvement over iterations 3′s 85. However, note that the lowest score of iteration 4 (image 3) is considerably lower than those of iterations 2 and 3. The main reason for this result is that during iteration 4, approximately 90% was between the ages of 15 and 20, with no computer science background, while for iteration 2 and 3, about 90% was between the ages of 20 and 25 with a computer science background.

General conclusion

Looking back at the way of attracting more users, it seems the more personal the approach is, the higher the success rate is to get a new user. As such, the posters spread across several public places were the least effective (and most expensive) method of gathering new users. Our Facebook and, more importantly, our Twitter messages attracted quite some attention, leading for instance to an increase of the number of viewers of our short video on YouTube. However, it wasn’t very effective in getting more new users. Mailing and asking people in person to use the app had the highest success rate.

Oswald Chambers (1874-1917) was born July 24, 1874, in Aberdeen, Scotland. Converted in his teen years under the ministry of Charles Haddon Spurgeon, he studied art and archaeology at the University of Edinburgh before answering a call from God to the Christian ministry. He then studied theology at Dunoon College. From 1906-1910 he conducted an itinerant Bible-teaching ministry in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Japan.

In 1910, Chambers married Gertrude Hobbs. They had one daughter, Kathleen.

In 1911 he founded and became principal of the Bible Training College in Clapham, London, where he lectured until the school was closed in 1915 because of World War I. In October 1915 he sailed for Zeitoun, Egypt (near Cairo), where he ministered to troops from Australia and New Zealand as a YMCA chaplain. He died there November 15, 1917, following surgery for a ruptured appendix.

Although Oswald Chambers wrote only one book, Baffled to Fight Better, more than thirty titles bear his name. With this one exception, published works were compiled by Mrs. Chambers, a court stenographer, from her verbatim shorthand notes of his messages taken during their seven years of marriage. For half a century following her husband’s death she labored to give his words to the world.

My Utmost For His Highest, his best-known book, has been continuously in print in the United States since 1935 and remains in the top ten titles of the religious book bestseller list with millions of copies in print. It has become a Christian classic.
