Edito (18:42 horas) para añadir algunas de las respuestas que Gumersindo Lafuente, ex director de Soitu, ha dado a los lectores de ABC.es en el videochat celebrado esta tarde y que están relacionadas con los interrogantes que proponía esta mañana. Esta tarde, a las cinco, Gumersindo Lafuente, ex director de Soitu, responderá a los lectores de ABC.es sus preguntas sobre el cierre de su medio, una de las noticias del año en la Internet española. Como supongo que no le dará tiempo a contestar todas, ahí van las mías:

1. ¿Es sostenible un medio nativo de Internet sin el soporte de uno de papel?

Como todos los negocios, la rentabilidad es necesaria. Y Soitu ni había entrado en beneficios ni tenía visos de cumplir con la estabilidad financiera exigida por su principal inversor, BBVA. Cierto que la crisis publicitaria ha sobrevenido al sector, pero, como le sucede a los diarios impresos gratuitos, lo único que ha hecho la crisis es dejar claro que el rey (los medios estrella en la Red) estaba desnudo. No debemos pasar por alto el hecho de que algunos medios como Elconfidencial.com y otros sí se mantienen a flote, pero eso sería más largo de explicar.

Sindo Lafuente en ABC.es: “No. No. NO. Lo divertido es crear cosas nuevas, es mucho más interesante. Aunque claro que con cabeceras de toda la vida también se pueden hacer grandes cosas”.

2. ¿Cuál es el tope de audiencia necesario para ser sostenible?

Uno de los datos sobre los que más controversia he encontrado relativos a Soitu son las audiencias. Según OJD, los usuarios únicos mensuales en septiembre alcanzaron los 1,08 millones, una subida del 11,42%. Sin embargo, el trasfondo de los datos nos muestra un promedio diario de 42.613 usuarios, que los fines de semana descendía por debajo de 31.000 usuarios. Según desvela Adrián Segovia en el blog sobre Audiencias de Espacio Fílmica, el 85% de los visitantes sólo accedía a la página una vez al mes y sus tiempos medios de lectura eran muy bajos. Recordando el cierre de ADN.es en enero, con cifras de audiencias superiores a las de Soitu, sigo sin encontrar respuesta a la pregunta. Puesto que a ambos les sobraron ideas, pero les faltaron visitantes (como ellos mismos reconocieron de manera irónica en su vídeo de despedida), ¿existe, como se dice en bolsa, un nivel técnico de audiencia que garantice la rentabilidad o, cuando menos, la viabilidad?

Sindo Lafuente en ABC.es: “Tuvimos más de un millón y medio de ususarios únicos en soitu y más de dos millones en nuestros widgets. Por cierto, despues de casi dos años de intentar explicrles a los sistemas de medición esto de los wigets y la información en nuevos soportes apenas ahora estaban haciendo pruebas para medir y certificar su tráfico para poder hacer explotación comercial de él. Otro problema añadido para lograr rentabilizar la inversión”.

3. ¿Hubiese sobrevivido Soitu con un modelo de pago por contenidos?

Es difícil asegurarlo, pero creo que no. La tiranía de lo gratis en Internet será difícil de vencer, y para lograrlo harán falta argumentos más que convincentes que, por ahora, pocos parecen tener. Hay quien a propuesto copiar un modelo similar al de Spotify, pero, de momento, los únicos medios de comunicación por los que el público parece estar dispuesto a pagar son la prensa y, en menor media, la televisión digital.

Sindo Lafuente en ABC.es: “No creo en el pago por los contenidos que ahora se dan en Internet y en la manera que se ofrecen. Creo que hay que pensar sobre eso, pero me parece más urgente y rentable dedicar el tiempo y los recursos a otras cosas”.

4. ¿Está relacionado el ritmo de actualización con la audiencia?

Yo creo que sí. No deja de ser una opinión personal, pero las cifras de audiencia diaria de Soitu me llevan a pensar que transmitió a sus lectores la impresión de que no era necesario entrar todos los días a su web para estar informado. Al estar desligado de la actualización al minuto que practican los grandes medios, Soitu, de alguna manera, se condenó a sí mismo a ser un medio ocasional, como una revista impresa semanal o mensual, lo que hizo aún más titánica la tarea de ser rentable. ¿Tuvo algo que ver en esto su particular priorización de las noticias, desvinculando el orden de éstas de la actualidad y dando más importancia a sus temas bandera (ecología, tecnología, etc.)? Puede que también, porque la gente se ha acostumbrado a leer las webs de una manera y es difícil que, a estas alturas, la cambien.

Sindo Lafuente en ABC.es: “Es posible, pero no queríamos hacer lo mismo que los gerneralistas, creo que para batirles en ese terreno tendríamos que haber dedicado muchos recursos y el final habría sido el cierre pero sin hacer nada nuevo o diferente. Vamos, que no estaríamos aquí hablando ahora”.

En cualquier caso, no quiero que estos comentarios críticos se entiendan mal. Me solidarizo con los compañeros de Soitu y creo que el proyecto tenía muchas cosas buenas, aunque, tal vez, estuviera mal enfocado. Esperamos que vuelva pronto, renovado o reencarnado en otro portal, por el bien de todos.
