Why does Windows Vista make pretty much everything in the C drive read-only?

Protection from rogue programs is my best guess, which seems fair enough, but I never had a problem with XP which only has the very most important files read-only.  If that was the only problem though, that would be fine.  But Vista for some reason doesn’t give the user (even members of the ~/Admin group) access to anything important on the C drive, or the ability to turn off the read-only attribute.

The specific annoyance was a problem with the LG PCSuite which you can use to transfer data from your LG phone.  For some reason LG PCSuite doesn’t work with the LG Viewty KU990 so you have to edit a .ini file to make the program think you’re using a U990 instead.  Which on XP took all of about 5 seconds.  In Vista I spent about half-an-hour trying to take the read-only off, working systematically up from the LG folder to the whole of C:\Program Files.  Then I checked the Attributes tab again, and the tick was back; on its own.

In the end I had to create a copy of the .ini file on the desktop before editing and moving it myself.

Just yesterday again I was trying to install the new 3.0 version of the J2ME JDK.

“Ahhhhh.  No, you can’t do that.  I’m not letting you put anything in C:\Program Files, it’s READ-ONLY, why don’t you put it in the D drive instead, that’s not read-only.”

Again, only a little thing, but I want it with my other JDK, not on its own.

It seems odd to me that Vista doesn’t let you edit files on your own computer.  That’s okay if you know nothing about computers, to stop you from messing it up, but I think Vista may have lost a fair few of its advanced users to Linux distributions.  Nowhere else does a tool ask you for permission to do what you want it to do:

Saw:  Are you sure you want me to cut this piece of wood? Positive?  Absolutely certain?

Soldering Iron:  Ooo be careful, this bit gets hot.  Are you sure you want to put that solder there?  But it might stick.  Are you sure you want that to happen?

That would be annoying; which is why it doesn’t happen.  Why does Vista do it?

Update: Seeing as this post gets more hits than all the rest put together, I guess some people must be having the same problems as I was.  So I’ll give you some advice which I’ve found has worked.

It’s not the most tidy, or elegant solution; but if you put any files you’re likely to want to edit, or have unrestricted access to in your user directory, then Vista seems willing to let you do that.  So far I haven’t had any problems with that, but there may be exceptions I guess.

This is just a bit of a moan, but also a handy tip for those looking for the best of the best in camphones out there.

WHY are phone makers insisting on rolling out their flagship camphones with measly LED flashes?? It is BEYOND me.

One example that really sticks out in my mind is the LG Viewty and the LG Viewty “Smart” (or LG Viewty 2).  When the LG Viewty was released back in late 2007, it was one of the best camphones on the market – and also one of the first fully touchscreen phones. Aside from the camera, the phone’s touchscreen and operating system was completely awful. The thing that did it for me, however, was the camera – with fantastic features, such as image stabilisation, picture smoothing and scene selection – these were things that had never been seen in a phone before. But the one MAJOR head turner was the fact that it incorporated a fully fledged XENON flash. It seemed that once this had been done, there was no going back. It completely transformed the camera phone.

How wrong I was.

Since then, it seems that as more and more manufacturers release their cameraphones into the market, its all about MEGAPIXELS. It seems that all people care about is “oh, my phones got 8 megapixels, when yours has 3.2, therefore it must be better”. NO. Give me a Sony Ericsson K810i anyday. LG angered me when I noticed that their so called “improvement” on the LG viewty lacked a XENON flash, and in its place put a measly LED flash.

Then Sony Ericsson, who have never let me down in the past where camphones are concerned, gave themselves a double blow this week when they not only discontinue the best camphone currently on the market, the C905, but they also bring out the Sony Ericsson W995 – with an 8 megapixel camera, HD screen and stereo speakers. When I spoke to the Sony Rep, they were lavishing praise on the phone – claiming it to be the “ULTIMATE media device”. S.E. had even attatched some attempt at a kick stand to show off what it could accomplish. However, my excitement was completely dashed when I noticed the puny LED ‘flash’ staring back at me. As if they couldn’t incorporate a Xenon flash in there!

Is there a mass famine of xenon flashes out there?

At least Samsung have learnt their mistakes, and added a Xenon flash onto the Pixon12, and Sony Ericsson should be redeeming themselves with the much awaited Satio later in the year.

But the LED is not gone by any means.

Vous êtes sous Linux et vous voulez faire une vidéo que vous pourrez ensuite visionner sur le Viewty de LG ? Ce billet est fait pour vous !

Le Viewty est un téléphone portable bien sympathique qui dispose notamment d’un décodeur DivX en standard. Idéal pour emmener quelques-unes de vos créations avec vous pour les montrer à la famille ou aux amis.

Par contre, comme pour bon nombre de systèmes embarqués, les fichiers qu’il peut traiter doivent répondre à des spécifications précises.

Le support du DivX

Le Viewty supporte le DivX de façon officielle, ce qui lui donne droit d’apposer le joli logo DivX sur son boitier.

Les vidéos doivent lui être présentées au format AVI.

Le code FourCC doit être DX50 : Exit les AVI encodés en Xvid ! Même s’il suffit de changer le code FourCC de XVID en DX50…

Avidemux

Si ce n’est déjà fait, installez vite Avidemux sur votre distribution Linux préférée.

Une fois lancé, Avidemux se présente sous la forme d’une fenêtre principale :

L’ouverture du fichier vidéo se fait comme dans la plupart des applications.

La sélection du Codec vidéo et du Codec audio se fait via deux listes de sélection situées sur la gauche.

Encodage vidéo

Il faut impérativement choisir le Codec vidéo MPEG-4 ASP (lavc).  Il permet moins de paramétrage que le Codec MPEG-4 ASP (Xvid4) mais le fichier AVI ainsi généré aura le code FourCC à DX50, ce qui est le but de la manœuvre.

Sélection du Codec vidéo

Il faut ensuite paramétrer le quantificateur à 8 ou 12 (plus sale mais une vidéo plus légère au final) :

Laissez le reste aux valeurs par défaut.

À présent, il va falloir adapter le contenu de la vidéo au Viewty. Je recommande les valeurs suivantes :

• dimensions : 320×240 pour les vidéos en 4/3 ou 424×240 pour les vidéos en 16/9
• nombre d’images par secondes : 25

Pour cela, cliquez sur le bouton Filtres (sous Vidéo) :

Si la vidéo est entrelacée (ex : DVD), appliquez, avant tout autre, le filtre Keep even fields sous l’onglet Entrelacement.

Si la vidéo a un débit différent de 25 images par seconde, appliquez le filtre Resample fps sous l’onglet Transformation comme suit :

Mettre les valeurs :

• largeur=320 (4/3) ou 424 (16/9)
• hauteur=240

Voilà, vous pouvez refermer la fenêtre de Gestion des filtres vidéo.

Sélectionnez l’encodage MP3 (LAME) comme ci-dessous :

• Type de canal : Mono (à moins que vous ne vouliez écouter la vidéo au casque)

O blog alemão oficial da LG deixou escapar informações sobre o smartphone Viewty II da fabricante, junto a algumas fotos de divulgação. Com apenas 12,4 mm de espessura e 90 g de peso, o celular tem uma câmera de 8 MP.

A segunda versão do LG Viewty tem tela de toque de 3 polegadas, Wi-Fi, GPS com recurso de geotagging, HSDPA e armazenamento expansível a até 32 GB.

A câmera de 8 MP tem ISO de até 1600 e vídeo com resolução 720 x 480.

Depois de vazadas as informações, a LG admitiu em seu blog alemão que as informações tinham vazado. “Essas informações serão divulgadas dentro dos próximos dias”, informa o post, pedindo desculpas por “qualquer inconveniente”.

Depois de tantos rumores, sobre este novo LG, finalmente foi anunciado oficialmente. Este sem dúvida que é um dos telemóveis mais esperados pelos fãs da LG, pois as suas características e funcionalidades como uma câmara de 8 Megapixéis, AGPS e qualidade de gravação em DVD.

Mas este LG GC900 Viewty Smart, não fica por aqui, pois também vem equipado com um ecrã táctil WVGA e uma interface já conhecida entre os utilizadores mais recentes de LG’s tácteis. A câmara de 8 MP, tem um ISO de 1600 e ainda a gravação em modo DVD com também a capacidade de tirar fotos em modo Multi-Face, Panorama, Artístico e Sorriso. No que toca à internet, poderá aceder através do Wi-Fi integrado e ainda por HSDPA a uma velocidade de 7.2Mbps.

Quanto à capacidade de armazenamento, este tem uma memória interna de 1,5GB que pode ser expansível através de um cartão microSD até 32GB. No que toca à espessura deste equipamento, este mede cerca de 12,4 milímetros, tornando-se assim mais apetecível.

O novo LG será lançado já no próximo mês de Maio na Europa, mas ainda não há informação quanto ao seu preço.

Ever since SE G900 refused to wake up for more that 5mins, Da’s been checking out new phones. Although first choices was Nokia (tired of phones dying on me) and SE (so forgiving), lately LG and Samsung phones have been the highlight. And just an hr earlier when i was trying to grab my phone whilst staying in my warm comfy bed, i hoped i could get a smaller phone, and who cares if there isn’t a bigass display!

Firma LG oficjalnie zapowiedziała wprowadzenie do sprzedaży telefonu komórkowego, który jest następcą popularnego modelu LG Viewty. Urządzenie będzie nosiło nazwę Viewty Smart.

Komórkę wyposażono w interfejs użytkownika S-Class 3D, 3-calowy dotykowy wyświetlacz o rozdzielczości 800×480 pikseli, łączność Wi-Fi, nawigację aGPS, 32GB wewnętrznej pamięci oraz aparat cyfrowy 8 Mpix z obiektywem Schneider-Kreuznach i ksenonową lampą błyskową.
