Last night was Amon Amarth, the Viking Death Metal band from Sweden. I went with a few friends, one of whom hadn’t been to a metal concert before, let alone a death metal concert.

So, we got into it, deep in the crowd, and it was rough, rougher than anything at Opeth. Every song had more moshing than eaven the heaviest Opeth song, it was intense.

Johaan, the singer, was great, really funny, great crowd talking. They were all great, good performers plus the playing was top-notch. They played a lot of great songs, a few from the recent albums, a few older things, a good mix, I was very happy.

We got out, soaked with a variety of sweats, and it was raining outside, which was pleasant, considering how hot we were. It was good, fun.

Viking/Folk Metal from Finland

Eh si, a quanto pare, sembra proprio che Vikernes abbia deciso di rimettere mano a strumenti e sintetizzatori vari. Non so se aspettarmi un album black metal, ambient o tutte e due le cose. Quel che è certo è che sarà un album piuttosto chiacchierato, a prescindere dalla positività o negatività delle recensioni che si porterà a casa.

Non sono mai stato un suo grande estimatore a dire il vero, la sua idea di black metal non ha mai fatto presa sulle mie corde (gli album ambient nemmeno li ho ascoltati). Ma sarà comunque divertente assistere a tutte le reazioni che provocherà.

Già il titolo ha fatto dissotterrare l’ascia di guerra per presunto razzismo. “Den Hvite Gunen” signidica “Il Dio Bianco”. È facile ricollegarlo al suo passato, che lo voleva immischiato in una torbida relazione con una piuttosto confusa comunione di filonazismo e paganesimo scandinavo. Quello che non tutti sanno però, è che “Il Dio Bianco” è uno degli epiteti con cui veniva definito Balder, il dio della bontà e purezza, il prediletto di Odino, che verrà poi ucciso da Hod il cieco, sotto “consiglio” del malvagio Loki. È molto più probabile, quindi, che il disco sarà incentrato su questo tema epico, piuttosto che su una esplicita apologia della “razza ariana”.

Appunto per questo, Vikernes sta ovviamente tentando di scrollarsi di dosso le ennesime accuse di nazismo. Compito arduo il suo, poiché ci ha abituati anche troppo bene alle sue controverse bizze.

Bisognerebbe, all’uscita dell’album, dare pure una controllata ai testi, per verificare se ci siano veramente apologie cripto-naziste. Ma pensandoci bene, Vikernes non è così stupido. Non credo getterà ulteriore acqua al mulino del suo torbido passato. Penso che anche lui si sia reso conto che i tempi sono cambiati, che gli anni in cui le chiesette di legno norvegesi illuminavano la notte con i loro incendi siano finiti da un pezzo.

D’altra parte, questo nuovo vespaio di polemiche è pur sempre pubblicità “aggratise” per il suo nuovo parto discografico… Mi rompo i coglioni a cadere sempre in questo trito luogo comune, che credo spesso venga sollevato in maniera involontaria o indiretta.

2 subgenres in particular, power metal & viking metal.  viking metal is self-explanatory, and power metal is basically the child of thrash and speed metal, infused with lyrical obsession of all things that got you beat up in high school:  dungeons & dragons, lord of the rings (before it was cool), fantasy novels, and the like, sung typically very highly (i.e. “ahhhhhhhhAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!”).  power metal has been around for a while, but got a little bit of mainstream attention with the success (relatively speaking, they’re far from platinum!) of dragonforce, based highly on their being featured in guitar hero.  dragonforce get some flack from the hardcore fanbase of the scene, they’ve been called “nintendo metal” based on the video game sound of their guitars & keyboards, but i think they pwn.  then again, metal is not my passion, so perhaps that’s why  either way, here’s a hilarious yet awesome (3 words that go together very well when talking about power metal videos & lyrics) video, “operation ground & pound”.

onto the viking metal!  this subgenre has its roots in the same place as black metal, not only in that both come from the same regional area (scandinavia) but both are credited with having their beginning with the band bathory.  the band’s 1990 album hammerheart was the first viking metal record.  viking metal ranges in sound much more, as the common basis for the bands isn’t the sound or style but lyrical topics that focus on norse mythology & the viking age.  and now we get to celebrate with 5 videos that do thor proud.  beginning with, from the faroe islands…

- Leaves’ Eyes es una banda de Metal sinfónico, folk metal y elementos de Viking metal originada en Noruega y Alemania en el 2003, poco después de que la vocalista de Theatre of Tragedy Liv Kristine fuese expulsada de la banda. Leaves’ Eyes fue formada entonces por su esposo Alexander Krull y miembros de su grupo Atrocity. En la mayoría de canciones Liv Kristine canta sola pero ocasionalmente añaden la voz gutural de Alexander Krull para darle más ambientación gótica.

La banda fue formada en el 2003 por Liv Kristine y su esposo Alexander Krull despues de la expulsion de Liv de Theatre of Tragedy debido a diferencias musicales en la evolución del grupo hacia el rock industrial y la música electrónica en sus álbumes.

El 17 de Agosto del 2004 es publicado su primer album Lovelorn. Ese mismo año la banda se enfrenta con la partida del baterista Martin Schmidt debido a razones personales. En una entrevista a Liv Kristine se explicó que el se retiró porque su linea musical habia cambiado y no quería seguir en el mundo del metal. En ese mismo año llego el nuevo baterista, Moritz Neuner (Graveworm, Darkwell)

El 30 de Mayo del 2005 sale a la venta su segundo album de estudio, Vinland Saga, el cual cuenta la historia de la llegada de los vikingos a Vinlandia, una parte de Norteamérica (costa de New Jersey), 500 años antes que Cristobal Colón y a su vez la historia de una joven pareja. Cada canción del album es una parte de la historia. La inspiración de este disco nació de los origenes noruegos de Liv Kristine. En sus propias palabras ella expresa: “Encontré mi inspiración en muchas de las piezas de arte noruego y la música folk, como tambien en melodias célticas“. Este disco tiene un gran trabajo con instrumentos clasicos, principalmente violines.

A fines de 2007 la banda enfrenta dos partidas, Chris Lukhaup después de tantos años junto a Atrocity y desde los inicios de Leaves’ Eyes, deja la banda por razones personales y Moritz Neuner deja la banda para buscar nuevos rumbos en su carrera como músico.

En febrero de 2008, Leaves’ Eyes fue confirmado para presentarse en el Wacken Open Air 2008, uno de los festivales mas importantes en la escena metalera mundial.

El 25 de Febrero del 2009 se lanza el primer DVD de la banda, We Came with the Northern Winds, un concierto grabado en el Metal Female Voices Festival en Wieze/Belgica. Según sus fans, es una de las mejores presentaciones de la banda, ademas de compartir escenario con bandas como Epica, Delain, Elis, Doro, Battlelore, entre otras.

Se espera que el 26 de Agosto del 2009 se lanze el tercer album de estudio de la banda, Njord.

- Comentario personal de la banda –

- Aquí les traigo la discografía completita de está gran banda originaria de Noruega con un sonido que lo caracteriza.

- Una banda muy sinfónica, con buenos sonidos y buenas ambientaciones en cada melódia. una banda de culto para todo seguidor del metal sinfónico y quizá gótico. Banda muy recomendable para aquel público.

- No está de más que la grandiosa voz de Liv Kristine, la ha hecho trabajar tanto cómo solita, cómo con está banda y también en bandas cómo, Cradle Filth, Atrocity, por mencionar algunas .

Strydegor - Back on Ancient Traces

Estreno una nueva etiqueta, y no es por matices, si no por un genero el cual tuvo un boom hace unos años pero ha quedado en el olvido, dejando aparte Amon Amarth y cuatro más. Desde Alemania nos llega la batalla de esta joven banda con su disco  debut Back on Ancient Traces, un disco con garra y fuerza, con paisajes acústicos y con el manual del buen viking metal en la mano, sigo en mi tónica de postear grupos con buenas ideas compositivas pero poca originalidad frente al estilo, aunque el registro de voz es más variado y podemos escuchar voces guturales pasando por registros vocales rasgados al más puro estilo black, no aportan demasiado más. Aún así, escuchando el disco encuentras esa fuerza que buscas en un grupo de estas características. Tiene ese tono épico, esas melodías que te descubren en un drakkar, apunto de librar una batalla en el nombre de Tyr. No soy muy asiduo a este genero, pero creo que cuando los aficionados a este genero escuchan The Ways to Valhalla o Ravens Over Midgard quieren introducirse en ese mundo y lo consiguen a través de una contundencia vocal más que aceptable, intercalando en la instrumentación  riffs rápidos con riffs pesados llenos de melodía, incluso acompañados con guitarras acústicas. Pues eso es todo lo que puedo acercaros a este grupo que sin duda merece unas cuantas escuchas y saquéis vuestro lado bélico.

Endelig ett nytt Ensiferum album, ja Ensiferum er ett av favorittbandene mine. Og jeg elsker stort sett alt de gir ut. Alt de skriver er helt sykt bra.

Må starte det hele med å si at de igjen har fått ett genialt albumcover, dette er kanskje det beste coveret til nå.

Albummet starter med en utrolig bra og rolig intro, ‘By The Dividing Stream’. Selvom låta er 3 minutter og 50 sekunder lang så gjør ikke det det til en dårlig intro. Det er hele tiden nye spennende ting i låta som gjør at man ikke venter på neste sang.

Title tracken har en intro som gir meg en ekstremt stor filmfølelse, ikke spør meg hvorfor men jeg føler det er noe som har med film å gjøre. Det går fort over når vokalen kommer inn da.

Utover i albummet fortsetter det egentlig bare tungt i partier og rolig i andre partier akkuratt som alle andre Ensiferum album.

Jeg synes ikke dette skiller seg noe ekstremt ut fra noen tidligere album sånn egentlig. Men det er ett utrolig bra album. Typisk Ensiferum album. Er hvertfall bedre enn Victory Songs etter min mening
