Vwb foto’s is MarsEdit beter: in Ecto kan je alleen foto’s uit de iPhoto library kiezen, in MarsEdit kan je vanuit iedere directory kiezen. Het toewijzen van alt teksten werkt Ecto weer mooier.

Ik ga twee software pakketten proberen om off-line te kunnen bloggen. De ene is Ecto (waarmee ik dit bericht maak), de andere is MarsEdit.

I woke up to two very good news.

The first won’t be revealed.

The second was rather refreshing. Liverpool out of the Champions’ League. It took quite a while to digest and it was followed by a good laugh.

Truly, I hope they would finally acknowledge that they are nothing but a has been, a good has been but a has been.

I am trying to be as just as I can here, the key word being trying. I sympathise with the players actually. Liverpool had been rather cursed with managers killing of careers. I pitied the likes of Milan Baros, Luis Garcia, Peter Crouch even Robbie Keane. Such potential went wasted in Anfield. My hatred for Liverpool is the hatred of a rivalry, nothing more. In fact during their days of Jamie Redknapp, Steve Mcmanaman and Robbie Fowler, I thought they excelled up to a certain level.

At the moment the current manager is definitely under utilising Yossi Benayoun who in my opinion is a gem for Liverpool. Like how Arsenal is depending on darling Fabregas ( I find him really cute and I’m a woman, we watched football for more than one reasons, deal with it), the same Liverpool is depending on Torres. The man delivers no doubt, but how does one deliver if one is not properly fed? They rose but only on certain occasions which is clearly not enough. This season is not theirs to take. The manager will soon fall out of favour. If things aren’t turned around, Liverpool will no longer be part of the big four especially with Spurs and Villa battling their way through. Liverpool will just be a team who used to be good. As it is, they are sinking in what appears to be a quicksand. Good luck Liverpool or is it good riddance??

Now, I am not saying my darling Manchester United is raring to go in the rhythm of perfection. No, even the devils have got their work cut out for them. Ronaldo is never miss but a gap still needs to be filled. Sir Alex cannot live in denial. I believe in my team but we are still not good enough for the likes of Champions’ League. I still see Berbatov as a liability. He has proven to be a waste of money.

Well here’s to me being wrong (about the Manchester United’s not being good enough that is)

For the last week and a half we have been harvesting olives from the trees at Casa degli Ulivi, a Tuscany Umbria Farmhouse With Swimming Pool. We had already taken 100 kg of olives for pressing, this ended up being mixed with other people’s olives but we really wanted to try our own oil. Over the past week we have been picking olives as fast as possible to get enough to be pressed as a single batch. We filled ten crates which meant nearly 250 kg; today it was time to press our very own olive oil.

I took the olives to a mill (frantoio) right below Cortona in Tuscany. The mill is located on the farm where Cortona’s famous Renaissance painter, Luca Signorelli lived.

I had been led to believe that the olives were still pressed in the traditional manner with giant stone wheels, however, the stone wheels are still in the frantoio, but modern machinery is now used to process the olives. The intense smell of freshly pressed olives filled the air, I started to dream of my new oil served on bruschetta!

The whole procedure was easier to follow than in the other mill in nearby Ossaia and I photographed each stage that the olives were put through.

On getting the oil home we immediately tried the fruits of our labours, we had it poured onto a slice of fresh crusty bread. The oil smelled beautiful, incredibly intense aromas (olives, linseed, tomato leaves and freshly cut grass) and in the mouth it had a lovely peppery kick at the finish, delicious!

I’m building a new business, creating and hosting small vacation trips to luxury villas around the world.  Our first trip will be to Italy, to the city of Cortona in Tuscany (yes, this is the town that Frances Mayes wrote about in “Under the Tuscan Sun”).

After a year of loss and setbacks, I took stock of my life and my goals.  There are many things I love to do, and many things I have done to make a living.  But the two things I love the most are writing, and travel.  Cooking and socializing and art and gardening are all part of the mix, but if I have to work for a living (and currently, I do) then I’d like to do something that involves writing or traveling or both.

So. I’ve written a novel, and am seeking representation along with thousands and thousands of other writers who have found the current economy has allowed them more time to write in lieu of earning income.  I believe in my novel, and in my future as a writer of novels.  But my belief is not paying the bills.

And so I devised the idea for this business, ComeToTheVilla.com. 

I rent a large house or villa in a beautiful part of the world, and arrange intimate trips composed of 8 to 12 guests, for whom I and my (someday) staff will provide concierge service… picking them up from the train station, arranging day trips and providing two square a day… that is breakfast and lunch spreads, as well as some sort of wine/cheese/bread/olive thingee in late afternoon or evening.

The advantages of a trip like this are many… Let’s say you decided to come with us for a vacation in the villa (and you know I’m going to ask you to).  For less than you might pay in a hotel, you get the run of a large and luxurious house with a pool, sharing these amenities with a small handful of other guests.  These guests provide social opportunities many Americans do not experience when traveling to Europe.  So, you can keep your own schedule, going to restaurants of your choice and enjoying the privacy of your room, or you can socialize with other guests at communal meals and daily outings.  It’s up to you.  You’re an adult, and you have the choice have your vacation the way you want it to be.

Tivoli is the site of Hadrian’s Villa, a getaway retreat for that infamous Roman emperor. He ran the empire from this villa during the latter years of his rule. The site exceeds a square kilometer (over 250 acres) and contains more than thirty buildings. The Vatican Museums contain much of this UNESCO World Heritage Site’s decorations and statues.

Villa d’Este is another UNESCO World Heritage Site in Tivoli. It is a beautiful water garden, reminiscent of the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. This villa was founded in the mid-Sixteenth Century by a son of Lucrezia Borgia. One ‘pathway’ is called the Avenue of One Hundred Fountains. Be sure to see the Fontana di Rome, a scale model of Ancient Roman, demolished but partially rebuilt.

The town of Ninfa was destroyed during the Fourteenth Century. For some six hundred years it lay in ruins, largely because of the malarial mosquitoes in the nearby marshes. And then in 1920 an aristocratic English artist, Ada Wilbraham, married into the Caetani family that had been given the city way back in 1297 by a Caetani Pope. Wilbraham started the restoration which is still in progress. The site includes a bridge and seven churches from Roman times, a castle, and the city wall.

Anzio, a resort city of some 45,000 people, was the birthplace of the Roman Emperors Caligula and Nero. In 1944 it was the site of a major World War II battle, Operation Shingle. Visit the Anzio Beachhead British Military Cemetery, the Beachhead Museum, and the American Military Cemetery in nearby Nettuno.

Latium cuisine is abundant. The best cuts of meat were reserved for the rich and the poor had to make do with the rest, including feet, heart, and the like. Bützow ist ein schönes altes Örtchen, dass durch stetige Restaurierung von Jahr zu Jahr schöner wird. So beschließe ich einen kleinen Spaziergang. Nach kurzer Zeit stehe ich vor der verwitterten, mächtigen Stiftskirche. Wie die meisten alten, unrestaurierten Gemäuer zieht mich der Flair dieser Kirche magisch an. Auf einen Blick springen mir Spuren der Zeit ins Auge, die so viele Geschichten erzählen, dass man das Gebäude förmlich flüstern hört. Ich versuche eine Stelle zu finden, wo ich in das Gebäude rein kommen könnte, als ich plötzlich eine alte Dame mit einem Schlüssel an einer Nebentür rumfummeln sehe. Ich habe Glück und sie lässt mich kurz herrein. Der Anblick ist atemberaubend! Danach setzte ich meine Tour auf die Klees’sche Art fort: Mit einem kurzen, anerkennenden Blick haste ich am restaurierten Stadtkern vorbei um mich dann im noch unrestaurierten Viertel der Aura der alten, teilweise verfallenen Villen und Fabriken und Bauernhäuschen hinzugeben.

Wer hätte das gedacht: Zuerst sollte die Bausubstanz des alten Schlosshotels auch beim Bau der Luxuswohnungen erhalten und restauriert werden, dann stellte der Bauherr überraschend fest, dass man leider doch alles abreißen müsse, da baufällig. So ein Pech!

Der unglaubliche Vorgang rund um diesen neuen Schandfleck für das Heidelberg-Panorama hat System. Auch andere Projekte, wie die Gründerzeit-Villa an der Bergstraße in Neuenheim, wurden nach dem gleichen Prinzip sturmreif geschossen.

Auch hier wurde vom Investor ein altes, als stark restaurierungsbedüftig bekanntes Gebäude erworben, um dann wenig später “überraschend” festzustellen, dass die Wände feucht sind und man die historische Villa abreißen müsse. “Mit einer Restaurierung der bestehenden Bausubstanz könne man hier kein Geschäft beim späteren Verkauf der Wohnungen machen”. Man muss sich das mal vorstellen: Ein Profi-Investor kauft für Millionen ein altes, baufälliges Objekt und behauptet nachher, er hätte nicht gewusst, in welchem Zustand das Objekt war. Das ist nicht blöd, sondern unverschämt, die Öffentlichkeit so verarschen zu wollen.

Noch frecher ging’s dann beim Projekt Schlosshotel zu. Hier ist einer der größten und erfahrensten Baukonzerne (Hochtief) der Bauherr. Schade, dass dieser DAX-Konzern mit zehntausenden Mitarbeitern keinen Bauingenieur im Haus hat, die einen Altbau auf seinen Zustand beurteilen können…

Hier müssen wir von SOS Heidelberg natürlich weiter fragen: Wer trägt denn die Verantwortung dafür, dass in beiden Fällen (und weiteren, wie z.B. Möchhofstraße und Lutherstraße in Neuenheim, 2005) nachträglich Abrissgenehmigungen für denkmalgeschützte Gebäude erteilt wurden? So eine als “Versehen” getarnte Frechheit von Bauunternehmen und gierigen Investoren darf doch eine Stadtverwaltung nicht nachträglich noch belohnen!

Und im nächsten Schritt stellt sich die Frage, weshalb die Verantwortlichen der Stadt solche indiskutablen Abrissgenehmigungen erteilen. Wer hat welche Vorteile davon? Wird hier noch jemand anderes belohnt?
