Die ersten 10 Spieltage in der Liga BBVA in dieser Saison sind vorbei und auf den ersten Blick scheint alles sehr ähnlich zu sein, wie es auch im letzten Jahr war. Barça ist erster und Real Madrid probiert zu folgen. Weiter oben befinden sich auch sonst die üblichen Verdächtigen. Dennoch, der erste Blick und vor allem der Vergleich mit dem letzten Jahr täuschen. Der Stolz Kataloniens, der Futbol Club Barcelona , spielt bis dato eine, national gesehen, tadellose Saison. In der Liga wurde bis lang noch nicht verloren, genauso wenig wie in der Copa del Rey, wo es zuletzt zwei überlegene Siege gegen Cultural Leonensa gab. Trotz allem, in diesem Jahr fehlten Barça bislang die ganz großen Glanzlichter. Bei allen Stammspielern der abgelaufenen Saison, mit Ausnahme von Xavi, Puyol und Piqué, fehlt momentan das gewisse Etwas. Es wirkt auf den Betrachter so, als wirke Barça gehemmt, nicht mit sich im Reinen, fast ein bisschen lethargisch. Das Barça der vergangen Saison blitzte nur einmal bislang auf, beim 6:0 gegen den Aufsteiger aus Zaragoza. Dafür muss man aber auch einmal zu gute halten, dass der Level der letzten Saison fast uneinholbar war. Barça glänzte die gesamte Saison über mit spielerischen und wenn nötig mit kämpferischen Leistungen, die am Ende zu einem völlig verdienten Tripel aus Liga, Champions-League und Copa del Rey führten, wobei das sicherlich größte Spiel der 2:6 Sieg im Estadio Santiago Bernabeu war.

Eben jenes 2:6 führte sicherlich auch mit dazu, dass ganz Madrid nach einem Mann schrie, Florentino Pérez. Milliardär, dank des Baubooms der vergangen Jahre, und schon einmal Präsident von Real Madrid, in dem er die Galaktischen, bestehend aus Figo, Zidane, Beckham, Ronaldo, Roberto Carlos und natürlich Raúl zusammenstellte. Madrid war nun die letzten Jahre zwar national durchaus erfolgreich, so wurde ja unter anderem mit dem deutschen Trainer Bernd Schuster 2007/08 die Liga gewonnen, aber international gab es im letzten Jahr mit zwei desolaten Spielen gegen Liverpool im Achtel-Finale eine schallende Ohrfeige und auch die Jahre davor war Madrid von seinen Glanzlichtern vergangener Tage weit entfernt. Florentino kam also und mit Florentino wurde vor allem erst einmal eines besser, nämlich die Stimmung. Die Kritik der beiden Madrid-Blätter As und Marca sowie auch von Seiten des Fernsehens, insbesondere des Fernsehsenders „cuatro“ ließ nun nach und Florentino tat sein übriges indem er Wort hielt und große Spieler ans Land zog. Erst Kaka‘, dann Cristiano Ronaldo, dann Benzema und dann tatsächlich zwei Spieler, die die Defensive verstärken sollten, Raúl Albiol und Xabi Alonso, beide ihres Zeichens spanische Nationalspieler.

Und der Plan schien aufzugehen. Madrid gewann mit gutem Fußball in der Liga viele Spiele und auch in der Champions-League mischte man gut mit. Bis zu dem Moment, als der bis dahin überragende Cristiano Ronaldo im Spiel gegen Marseille gefoult wurde und seitdem nicht mehr für die Madrilenen spielen konnte. Madrid fehlte nun der Spieler, der zwei Gegenspieler auf einmal binden konnte und somit zwangsläufig Freiraum für seine Nebenleute schuf. Man verlor gegen Sevilla, spielte nur Unentschieden gegen Gijón und in der Champions-League gab es auch eine Niederlage gegen Milan und dann kam die große Blamage, der 4:0 Sieg von Alcorcón, einem Verein aus einem Madrider Vorort der in der Segunda División B spielt. Madrid spielte mit einer Elf aus Spielern, die mindestens um den Champions-League Einzug spielen müssen. Dudek, Arbeloa, Metzelder, Albiol, Drenthe, Guti, Diarra, Granero, van der Vaart, Raúl, Benzema und natürlich auch Pellegrini mussten so selbstverständlich bittere Medienkritik einstecken und man fragt sich auch nach einem miserablen 1:0 Madrid-Sieg im Rückspiel vor nahezu ausverkaufter Heimkulisse gegen „Alcorconazo“, wie der Verein jetzt erfurchtsvoll genannt wird, ob man nicht doch zu sehr von Cristiano abhängt oder ob Madrid in den ersten Partien über seinem eigentlichen Level gespielt hat. Am 29.11. jedenfalls gibt es den Clasico gegen Barça und sollte Trainer Manuel Pellegrini dort nicht gewinnen oder sogar verlieren würde ich mehr auf eine Ablösung des Chilenen als auf einen Verbleib des vor der Saison für 3 Millionen Euro aus Villareal geholten Trainers setzen.

Sollte sich bis dahin nichts ändern, wäre es die dritte Trainerentlassung dieser Saison nachdem auch schon Atlético Madrid und Racing Santander ihren Übungsleiter ersetzt haben. Beide Mannschaften spielten ihre Saisons bislang deutlich unter Erwartung. Bei Atlético wurde mit Quique Sánchez Flores ein durchaus junger, aber dennoch erfahrener Mann geholt, der dem doch sehr fragilen Defensivverbund um den Ex-Hamburger Tomas Ujfalusi Stabilität geben soll. Jedoch ist ihm dies noch nicht gelungen. Zu viele Gegentore, die selbst Kun Agüero und Diego Forlán nicht wegschießen können, hatten einen Mittelfeldplatz als Konsequenz. Auch Racing ist schlecht in die Saison gestartet. Nachdem man vor der Saison Juan Carlos Mandiá von Hércules loseisen konnte und die Kantabrier durchaus für ihre Gelassenheit und Kontinuität bekannt sind, war dann aufgrund großer Medienkritik der Druck auf Mandiá wegen des viertletzten Tabellenplatzes zu groß, sodass Racing die Reißleine zog.

Ganz so weit ist Xerez noch nicht. Der Aufsteiger, der auch vor der Saison seinen Trainer gewechselt hat, hat einen alles andere als guten Saisonstart hingelegt und steht momentan ziemlich hoffnungslos mit Málaga am Tabellenende da, da die Mannschaft offensichtlich nicht die Qualität hat, in der ersten Liga zu spielen. Der Sprung war wohl doch eine Nummer zu groß, aber dem Vernehmen nach soll im Wintertransferfenster „groß“ eingekauft werden. Man wird sehen.

Ebenso muss man sehen, was Villareal macht. Das gelbe U-Boot, dessen zweite Mannschaft in der zweiten Liga mithält, spielt eine enttäuschende Saison im Jahr eins nach Pellegrini. Sollte Pellegrini tatsächlich abgelöst werden, wäre es, denke ich, durchaus im Bereich des Möglichen, dass er wieder nach Villareal zurückkehrt.

Denn sonst stünde schlimmstenfalls noch der Gang in die zweite Liga an, wo momentan die Liga von Cartagena angeführt wird. Völlig überraschend, da Cartagena erst aus der dritten Liga aufgestiegen ist und eher als Abstiegskandidat galt. Mit oben dabei ist auch, wie schon im letzten Jahr, Hércules. Der Club aus Alicante liegt als Zweiter auf Aufstiegskurs und hat die Abgänge von Trainer Mandiá, Kapitän Sergio Fernández und Sturmführer Rubén Navarro offensichtlich gut verkraftet und wirkt stärker als letzte Saison, was wohl auch unmittelbar mit Neuverpflichtung Rufete zusammenhängt, der der rechten Außenbahn von Hércules frischen Wind verpasst hat. Völlig enttäuschend bis jetzt ist das Abschneiden von dem Club von David Odonkor, Betis Sevilla. Letztes Jahr überraschend abgestiegen, sollte dieses Jahr der sofortige Wiederaufstieg klargemacht werden. Momentan befindet man sich aber weit davon entfernt und dümpelt im Mittelfeld der Tabelle herum, umgeben von Vereinen wie Gimnàstic de Tarragona, Elche, Villareal B oder Numancia.

Das soll es jetzt erst einmal mit dem kurzen bisherigen Saisonfazit gewesen sein. Bis dahin, La vida puede ser maravillosa!

A pesar de su victoria ante el AD Alcorcon, el Real Madrid no consiguio avanzar a la siguiente fase.  Alcorcon un equipo de la Segunda Division logro eliminar al Real Madrid con todo y sus Estrellas.

Si se caracterizó por algo la primera etapa de Florentino Pérez al frente del  Real Madrid fue por la política de equipo resumida en la frase “Zidanes y Pavones”. Tras su dimisión parece que ese modelo cayó en desuso por sus nefastos resultados deportivos, eso sí el Real Madrid fue una máquina de hacer dinero durante su etapa, dio un lavado de cara al Santiago Bernabéu, colocándolo como uno de los mejores estadios del mundo. Tras varios años de grandes convulsiones en el equipo de Concha Espina, la vuelta de Florentino, o como muchos aficionados le llaman “el salvador” se produjo el pasado verano.

Cogió un timón que comienza a virar hacia posiciones peligrosas. La política ha cambiado y ahora los pavones se han convertidos en “Albioles y Diarras”, jugadores de un gran nivel deportivo pero poco mediáticos. Por su parte, los “Zidanes” se han convertido en “KAKAS y RONALDOS”, jugadores de fantasía que venden todavía más camisetas en épocas de recesión, que los anteriores. Aunque como estamos viendo, esta fórmula todavía no está dando los frutos esperados.

Ayer, la eliminación del primer equipo frente a un heroico Alcorcón, que volvió a demostrar que en el fútbol no todo es dinero (El Real Madrid ha gastado 300 millones de euros y el Alcorcón ha hecho caja dando salida a jugadores importantes en el plantel de Anquela, míster alcorconero,  tras estar a punto de conseguir el ascenso, casos como Susaeta -Rayo Vallecano-, Tito -Rayo Vallecano- o Nevado -Pontevedra- son algunos ejemplos).  Un Alcorcón que ha culminado un sueño que ninguno de sus integrantes hubiera imaginado nunca. Ayer se vio que la ilusión no se paga, que cada año hay un equipo que tumba a un “grande” y al Madrid ya le ha ocurrido en demasiadas ocasiones.

Creo que es hora de tomar nota y buscar soluciones. Personalmente  no soy partidario de echar a Manuel Pellegrini, creo que es un grandísimo entrenador, pero para dirigir a todo un Real Madrid hay que tener algo más que el título bajo el brazo, hay que tener una aptitud para  saber controlar un gallinero con demasiados gallos.

Otro tema que no quería dejar pasar por alto es el descalabro que está sufriendo la cantera blanca.  Los tres principales equipos blancos no acaban de arrancar. Si buscamos al Real Madrid Castilla o al Real Madrid C, esta temporada debemos comenzar a mirar por los puestos bajos de la clasificación. Es increíble pero sí. Muchos aficionados piden que el club que preside Florentino Pérez busque jugadores en su cantera, pero la realidad es que hoy por hoy no tienen nivel para jugar en el Real Madrid.

El Real Madrid Castilla (segundo equipo de la casa blanca), juega en el grupo II de Segunda División B, junto a otros equipos de la Comunidad de Madrid donde se encuentra entre otros el Alcorcón, verdugo del primer equipo. Esta temporada se había reforzado el equipo con jóvenes valores como Rubén Ramos, Juanfran o Cristian.  Pero  el equipo actualmente se encuentra en la posición decimocuarta empatado a puntos con los puestos de descenso (En la última jornada ganó 4-2 al Gimnastica de Torrelavega remontando en el tiempo de descuento con tres goles).  Una situación muy distinta a lo que se ha visto las últimas temporadas, donde el equipo ha estado luchado por ascender.

El segundo filial está encuadrado en el grupo VII de 3º División. Un grupo integrado solamente por equipos madrileños. El equipo que dirige Manolo Díaz, no acaba de arrancar esta temporada. Los blancos son decimoquintos con un puntos por encima de los puestos de descenso. Una categoría, la 3º División, que ha bajado en calidad debido a la gran crisis económica, que no debería afectar a los equipos filiares.

Otro de los equipos que siempre ha sido un referente en el equipo merengue es el Juvenil A. Un conjunto que se ha proclamado campeón en innumerables ocasiones en diferentes torneros nacionales e internacionales. Esta temporada su objetivo era ser campeón del grupo V de División de Honor, donde juega, hacerse con el campeonato nacional y la Copa del Rey de juveniles. Pero la realidad es que marcha en sexta posición, eso sí hay que destacar que tiene tres partidos menos que el líder, el Atlético de Madrid, equipo que le ganó por 3-0. Equipos como el Getafe, Rayo Vallecano o Unión Adarve están por delante del equipo que dirige Alberto Toril.

Estos datos son un claro ejemplo de la situación deportiva que vive el Real Madrid. Yo si fuera Florentino Pérez no buscaría culpables, sino soluciones para que el Real Madrid vuelva a ser un referente en todos los ámbitos. Es cierto, que cada vez es más difícil ser referente en todos los apartados. Equipos con menos tradición pero con muchas ganas e ilusión están pegando fuerte. El Getafe o Villareal pueden ser buenos ejemplos de ellos, que son capaces de hacer frente a equipos de la talla del Real Madrid o Barcelona.

El Real Madrid no es solo un club. Una de las cosas que hacen grande al Real Madrid son sus aficionados. Unos aficionados que se reparten por todas las partes del mundo. Es increíble visitar los sitios más remotos del mundo y encontrarte con un chicuelo que viste una camiseta con el escudo del equipo blanco. Es aún más increíble cuando hablas de España y una de las primeras cosas que comenta la gente es Real Madrid entre otros términos.

Mi duda como madridista, que me considero, es muy clara ¿Realmente los jugadores que visten la elástica del Real Madrid sienten los colores? O ¿Simplemente son mercenarios del balompié? En ocasiones siento nostalgia cuando mi padre me habla de ex jugadores como Puskas, Juanito, Gordillo o incluso Chendo, actual delegado del conjunto blanco. Jugadores que sentían los colores por encima de todo. Dejando el pecho en cada partido y haciendo que el Madrid sea lo que hoy conocemos.

En conclusión, es una pena que el mundo del fútbol haya dejado a un lado lo deportivo para pasar a ser puramente un negocio y el espectáculo de ver a jugadores que aparte de destacar por sus cualidades deportivas son las portadas de los principales noticiarios rosas de España.

A couple of very big (in my not-so-humble opinion, at least) matches went down this weekend, with some producing more exciting results than others. This week there was a double countdown to what I thought were two of the biggest Red v. Blue matches this year. In England we had arguably the two largest Premiership contenders in Chelsea and Manchester United going head-to-head, while in Italy Scudetto favourites Internazionale went testa-alla-testa with my beloved (but struggling terribly) AS Roma.

Football:

Arsenal 4-1 Wolverhampton – Sure, Chelsea and United are probably the two favourites in the Premiership race this season, but I’m not fool enough to dismiss Arsenal as also-rans just yet. For one thing, the Gunners are on a hot streak of 13 unbeaten matches in all competitions. For another thing, one of those matches consisted of something of an Arsenal youth squad (but then again, aren’t all their squads youth squads?) defeating admittedly-struggling Liverpool in Carling Cup play. On the other hand, this weekends performance in particular wasn’t all that impressive, and it might be more appropriate to say that Wolverhampton lost the match rather than saying Arsenal won it. The Molineux Stadium offered the Wolves no security, as the visitors went up 3-0 before the end of the first half, with 2 of those goals being put into the Wolves’ own net by their defenders Ronald Zubar and Joey Craddock. Cesc Fàbregas would provide the third. Andrei Arshavin added his name to the scoresheet in the second half, and Joey Craddock somewhat atoned for his errors by scoring a consolation goal (in Arsenal’s net, this time) in the 89th minute. Along with the result of the Chelsea-United match this afternoon, this win in Wolverhampton sees Arsenal climb to second in the League table.

Perhaps one day Drogba will follow the footsteps of Vinnie Jones to Hollywood.

Chelsea 1-0 Manchester Utd A fairly controversial match – but then again, it was always going to be. There’s bound to be a million gripes from United fanboys about the various ‘injustices’ committed against them today, so if you’re a Blues fan gloat with caution, because you’re likely to receive a long series of whines in response. Let me say a few things: Darren Fletcher’s foul was not a foul, Drogba should probably retire and become an actor, and Jonny Evans is a little punk. Many tempers flared during the match, and it seemed as if a full-out brawl was imminent at points, but alas they kept their heads and all that came of it was a flurry of yellow cards. It was nevertheless dramatic, though, with such highlights as the constant battle between Didier Drogba and Wes Brown providing (me, at least) with much entertainment. It would be Mr. Chelsea himself, John Terry, who would make the difference between the two sides, heading in what I believe was the only goal United have conceded from a set piece this year on 76′. I suppose that earns him a man of the match nod, but other contenders include Wayne Rooney, Nicolas Anelka and Michael Essien, who all gave 110% and played hard-nosed games (must’ve eaten their Toast’n'Butta this morning). Though Drogba’s theatrics were shameful, and he may have hauled down Wes Brown in the build-up to Chelsea’s goal, I have to call out Jonny Evans here, for his kung-fu kick to the chest of Drogba and then his tackle on Ricardo Carvalho long after the whistle. Horrific performance for the youngster; he should consider himself lucky that he wasn’t sent off. A win that sees Chelsea sitting 5 points clear atop the EPL table, and which should boost their morale for weeks to come. As for United; well I’m sure we’ll hear all about how they feel.

Manchester City 3-3 Burnley – Bad news all over Manchester this weekend, it seems. City have been struggling for weeks now, and had drawn their 4 previous fixtures. Well, make it five, Citizens. Newly-promoted Burnley are notoriously shoddy away from home, yet a late goal helped them to steal a point at the City of Manchester Stadium in a 6-goal draw. Burnley in fact took an early 2-0 lead over their hosts after Graham Alexander converted a spot kick and Steven Fletcher found the back of the net. City fought back, and goals from Shaun Wright-Phillips, Kolo Toure and Craig Bellamy saw them take control of the game by the 56th minute. However, they were unable to keep hold of that control and on 87′ Burnley substitute Kevin McDonald scored to bring his side level for once and for all. I’m sure Burnley won’t be happy to have given up that initial 2-0 lead, but all in all, this is a result which should leave Owen Coyle pleased and Mark Hughes with his head in his hands.

Futbol:

The dangerous duo nearly gave Los Blancos a run for their money.

Real Madrid 3-2 Atlético Madrid – Well, El Clásico never fails to disappoint. Even in a season where Atléti has struggled so badly that they have been forced to make a change in management, against Los Blancos they always bring their all. It seemed at first that Real would simply stroll to a Clásico win this season, after Kaká gave his side the lead on 5′, with Marcelo and Higuaín adding their names to the scoresheet on 24′ and 64′, respectively. However, Los Colchoneros would battle back late in the second half after Sergio Ramos was given his marching orders on 66′; a frenzied 2 minutes would see Diego Forlán and Sergio Agüero pull two goals back for their side with 10 minutes left to play. Manuel Pellegrini’s men would ultimately be able to hold off their crosstown rivals, but Quique Sánchez Flores can at least take heart from his side’s spirited fightback. An exciting Clásico, to say the least.

Barcelona 4-2 Mallorca – Samuel Eto’o commented this week that if he had not been bound by his duties to Inter, he would have traveled to the Camp Nou to see his ex-sides face off against one another – he would have sat directly at the centre line so as to not betray his allegiance to one over the other. I gotta say, Sammy, from a Romanista’s point of view, I wish you’d gone. But I digress. Barcelona youngster Pedro gave his side an early lead on 10′, only for Mallorca’s Nunes to equalize from a corner kick just under 10 minutes later. Pedro wasn’t finished yet, though and on 39′ restored the lead to his side, smashing home the third rebound after Mallorca keeper Aouate denied teammates Thierry Henry and Sergi Busquets. The two would get their chance just a few moments later, when Busquets sent in a cross for Henry, who beat Aouate with a diving header to make it 3-1. Lionel Messi was introduced after the break to further increase Barca’s tally – he would eventually, but he would take his time, and it would only be from the spot after teammate Ibrahimovic was brought down in the area. Mallorca sub Alhassane Keita would earn one back for his side late into stoppage time, but ultimately it was too little too late and Barcelona would cruise to an easy victory.

Fußball:

Bayern München 1-1 Schalke 04 – Bayern have been demoralized over and over again the past two weeks, and were perhaps unenthused to face the stiff challenge of Schalke this weekend. Schalke sit above Die Roten in the standings, and looked to pressure the home side early, forcing them into rash challenges and using their wingers to cause Bayern problems on the break. Both sides traded chances in the early stages of the match, but ultimately it would be Bayern who would get ahead first, with a little bit of luck. On 31′ Holger Badstuber lofted in a long ball to Miroslav Klose, whose headed effort deflected off of Kevin Kuranyi and landed at the feet of Daniel van Buyten, who duly buried it. However, Joel Matip, making his debut for Die Königsblauen, was able to cancel out the home side’s advantage with a strike of his own on 43′. The teams would go into the half level, and when they came back it was all Bayern – Louis van Gaal’s men poured forward and for the better part of the half had their visitors pinned in their own end. However, no matter what Bayern did, they were unable to find the back of the net, and both van Gaal and Felix Magath’s sides would come away from the game with a point. Bayern need to get themselves out of this current slump if they are to have any chance of keeping alive their hopes of European and domestic conquest.

AS Roma 1-1 Inter – I think I’ll tackle this one in its own article.

Mauro Camoranesi makes the difference for Juventus once again.

Juventus 5-2 Atalanta – It seems that when Mauro Camoranesi is on form, so is La Vecchia Signora. Forget Brazilians and expensive summer signings (and those that are one and the same); the success of Ciro Ferrara’s squad depends on the performance of the Italian international, who has been with i Bianconeri since 2002. In the case of yesterday’s game, it was Camoranesi’s brace which opened up the scoring in a 5-2 drubbing of Atalanta. Felipe Melo, Diego and David Trezeguet would account for the other 3 goals on Juventus’s part, while Valdes and Fabio Ceravolo pulled back 2 for the home side. This is a very positive result for Juve; while Atalanta generally climb to midtable at the best of times, they are nonetheless notoriously difficult to defeat at home. With Inter tying Roma and yesterday’s drubbing in Bergamo, Juve move to 5 points off of first place.

AC Milan 2-1 SS Lazio – I give Davide Ballardini until the end of the month. After the horrendous loss to Villareal in Europa League play on Thursday, Lazio needed some kind of result to break them out of a long, long losing streak. Admittedly, this revived AC Milan team are not the easiest team to achieve it against, but if they are going to do it anywhere, it would be in their Roma’s house, the Stadio Olimpico. As it can plainly be seen, they did not achieve said result. Thiago Silva and Alexandre Pato both found the Lazio net with first-half goals to dash whatever hopes could still be held in the Curva Nord even before the halftime whistle. However, Lazio were handed a lifeline when Thiago Silva deflected the ball into his own net after some deft play by Mauro Zarate. After that own-goal, gli Aquilotti seriously threatened to equalize, with Tommaso Rocchi and Mauro Zarate both coming close to restoring parity. In the end though, AC Milan would grab a valuable 3 points, while Lazio return to their fortress of solitude media silence to ponder what continues to go wrong.

Fiorentina 1-0 Udinese – It took them 84 minutes, but la Viola were able to to squeak by midtable side Udinese with some help from a Juan Manuel Vargas strike. It was  night of missed chances for both sides; a race to the finish where both teams were misfiring on all cylinders. Fiorentina had the bulk of the chances, with 14 shots and 5 on target, compared to Udinese’s 7 and 2. However, only one of those shots would make a difference tonight at the Stadio Friuli, and it would be Vargas’ set-piece shot. That shot earned i Gigliati a victory which sees them only 1 point behind AC Milan in the standings, sitting comfortably in 4th place.

Ugh… A good weekend for some, perhaps. As always, only the big games – ’cause no one gives a hoot how Sheffield Wednesday did (sorry, Sheffielders).

Football:

Vidic looks how United feels.

Liverpool 2-0 Manchester Utd – On friday night I sat in a pub with a friend of mine, who nursed his pint as he mourned his team’s downward spiral. He is, of course, a Liverpool fan. I told him not to worry – that they’d beat MUFC this weekend and they’d bounce back. I’m not sure exactly how much either of us believed what I was saying, but sure enough, the game rolled around and Liverpool came out on top at Anfield. The Scousers would survive a second minute scare when Wayne Rooney found the back of the net (only to be disallowed for offside) and would go ahead in the 65th minute thanks to a classy finish from Fernando Torres. Nemanja Vidic and Javier Mascherano would both be sent off in the dying minutes of the match and it would be the Frenchman David Ngog who would seal United’s fate in stopagge time, finding the net on 96′. So all you sad-eyed Scousers, rejoice! You’re back to winning – for now. And Rafa, Gillette and Hicks – you can breathe again too.

Chelsea 5-0 Blackburn – Rovers fans will not be rejoicing this weekend. Gaël Givet opened the scoring in Saturday’s match by deflecting Nicolas Anelka’s shot into the back of his own net on 20′. That would hold the Blues until the half, but on 48′ Didier Drogba won a spot kick for his side and Frank Lampard (despite a returning Joe Cole wanting it oh so badly) converted to double Chelsea’s lead. From that point on, the floodgates were opened: within the next 15 minutes Michael Essien buried another of his rare but famed long range efforts, Lampard bagged his brace, and Didier Drogba brought Chelsea’s tally to 5. Blackburn were completely overrun by the home side, who obviously wanted to show that last week’s defeat to Aston Villa was not a sign of futher weakness. Joe Cole also made a fantastic appearance, his first in the Premiership this year, running the visitors ragged and creating all sorts of chances for his side. In their last two fixtures the Blues have 9 goals for and 0 against. Not bad Carletto, not bad.

Arsenal 2-2 West Ham – Despite Arsene Wenger’s claim that the Gunners will pick up at least one trophy this year, his side were unable to pick up full points against cross-town rivals West Ham this weekend. First half goals from Robin van Persie and William Gallas looked like they might be enough to see the Gooners take full points, but late strikes from Carlton Cole and Italian substitute Alessandro Diamanti saw Gianfranco Zola’s side make a marvelous comeback – despite the sending off of Hammer midfielder Scott Parker. Seems like the trophies are still a long way away, Wenger.

Futbol:

Real Madrid 0-0 Sporting de Gijon - Sans-CR9 Madrid were unable to bounce back from their midweek loss to AC Milan and gain a positive result domestically this weekend. Los Merengues were held to a draw at El Molinón by the midtable side, who were kept afloat largely through the heroic efforts of their netminder, Juan Pablo. Kaká once again failed to impress in the white shirt, and Manuel Pellegrini’s side dropped points in La Liga for only the second time this season to fall three points short of Barcelona. Not the result Los Blancos were looking for – one can only imagine that just about everyone involved in that club is virtually counting down the days until their most expensive signing is fit again. But not I!

Villareal 2-1 Malaga – Unlike his current side, Manuel Pellegrini’s former squad were able to bounce back after a midweek European defeat to Rome’s other team and grab their first domestic win of the season. El Submarino Amarillo took the lead on 27′ thanks to the Brazilian Nilmar, only for Malaga’s Luque to equalize in the dying seconds of the first half. However, it wouldn’t take long after the break to restore that lead, as defender Capdevila found the back of the net on 54′ – his goal would be enough to see the home side grab all 3 points and that much-needed first victory. Finally, something (however little) to celebrate at El Madrigal.

Barcelona 6-1 Real Zaragoza – Unlike their arch-rivals, Barcelona showed that they weren’t too worried about their midweek loss to Rubin Kazan with a 6-goal thrashing of Real Zaragoza. Bullies. Seydou Keita bagged a treble, Zlatan Ibrahimovic bagged a brace and Lionel Messi bagged one of his own in a comfortable victory for the Catalan side. Jorge López pulled one back for his side on 77′, but it was little more than consolation as the Blaugrana ran rampant in the Camp Nou. I suppose the rest of us have now been warned…

Calcio:

AC Milan 2-1 Chievo Verona - In keeping with the theme of last-gasp comebacks and goal-scoring defenders, AC Milan were able to grab their second straight Serie A win after Alessandro Nesta, of all people, scored twice in the last 10 minutes of the match to earn his club all 3 points against the Flying Donkeys. Nesta’s heroic efforts cancelled out the 7th minute lead which Giampiero Pinzi had afforded his side and which had stood for the better part of the match. It seems that Leonardo’s men are finally finding their legs to stand on after a more-than-shaky start to the season this year – it’s about time, Rossoneri; it’s about time.

Inter 2-1 Catania - i Nerazzurri were able to reassert their position atop Serie A with a comfortable win over a struggling Sicilian side at the San Siro on Saturday (ooh, alliterative!). Catania fell behind early in the game as first-half goals from Sulley Muntari and Wesley Sneijder seemed to put the match well out of reach. However, their lead would be halved when keeper Julio Cesar erred and was forced to give up a penalty on 83′; which Giuseppe Mascara duly converted. Though Catania would pour forward after that in hopes of finding their equalizer, Inter afforded no clear-cut chances to their visitors and were able to secure victory, reasserting themselves atop the Serie A table after being usurped earlier that day. Speaking of which…

Sampdoria 4-1 Bologna – Call it the Antonio Cassano show. Call it the Daniele Mannini show. Call it whatever you want, but know that Sampdoria mean business. Sure, Bologna are relegation fodder and aren’t exactly the stiffest test Serie A have to offer, but then, neither are Catania. The visitors wasted no time, with Giampaolo Pazzini scoring on 7′, Daniele Mannini adding two of his own, and Reto Ziegler rounding it out to 4-0 within the next 30 minutes. Marco Di Vaio, easily Bologna’s best player, picked up a red card early on – however Pablo Osvaldo would find a late consolation goal for the home side. Though Fanantonio didn’t get his name on the scoresheet, he had a hand in two of his side’s goals and his creativity was, as ever, the driving force behind Sampdoria’s potent attack. After Saturday’s blowout, i Blucerchiati enjoyed a short time at the summit of Italian calcio, before Inter reasserted themselves later that afternoon. Another seriously impressive performance from the upstart side from Genova – the only question that remains is just how long they can keep this up.

That about sums it up.

Livorno 1-0 AS Roma - I have only one thing to say: this team needs to learn how to play without Totti. After last weekend’s loss to Milan and the midweek draw at Fulham, it appears that Claudio Ranieri’s honeymoon with AS Roma has come to an abrupt end. The team is now forced to face a harsh reality: Totti is out and they are expected to win anyways. Livorno are absolute bottom of the table and they just sacked their coach – today was Serse Cosmi’s debut as manager of the struggling side. For i Giallorossi to lose to this side at the Olimpico is nothing short of disastrous and the 1-goal lead afforded to the visitors by Francesco Tavano should have been easily overcome. Jérémy Menez and Mirko Vucinic proved ineffectual up front and while Daniele De Rossi looked solid while defending, perhaps it should be he who steps up to provide an offensive threat in the absence of Er Pupone. Of course, I’m being ridiculous – one of DDR’s problems is that he already tries to do too much at once. Stefano Guberti once again looked strong, bringing immediate life to the side after he replaced Menez at the half, and even Julio Baptista was thrown into the match in a last-ditch effort to quiet the boos resounding throughout the Olimpico. In the end, nothing worked and i Lupi are left to ponder another defeat to another weaker side. We need to snap out of this and fast.

Bari 2-0 Lazio – Misery loves company. Luckily for Romanisti, Laziali know little else. We weren’t the only team (not even the only team in Rome) to face defeat against a newly-promoted side this weekend – Lazio’s winless streak extends to 7 games as they were defeated handily by i Galletti, who put in a mighty performance at the Stadio San Nicola this evening. Bari went ahead on only 11′ thanks to Paulo Barreto, though they wouldn’t improve upon that lead until the second half, when Riccardo Meggiorini ran onto a ball from Vitaly Kutuzov and shot top corner on 69′. Lazio struggled throughout the manage and did not look capable of bringing themselves back into it – their fate was sealed with just 7 minutes to go when substitute Ousmane Dabo was sent off. Hey Romanisti, at least we’re not Lazio!

Juventus 1-0 Siena – Today Juve once again failed to live up to their billing of Scudetto contenders. With Livorno’s victory over you-know-who, Siena sit absolute rock-bottom in Serie A – yet it took La Vecchia Signora 72 minutes to break down the home side. It would be Brazilian hitman Amauri who finally found the back of the net for a side that doesn’t look nearly good enough to mount a proper Scudetto challenge. All in all, not impressive fare from Ciro Ferrara’s men, but I’m sure they’ll happily take home the 3 points.

Fußball:

Bayern München 2-1 Eintracht – Die Roten were spared embarrassment after a pair of late goals made up for the concession of a surprise lead. Though Louis van Gaal’s side were the more dangerous looking out of the gate, neither side were able to capitalize upon their first-half chances (ever-reliable Luca Toni struck woodwork yet again) and it would be the visiting side who would take the lead on 60′ at the Allianz-Arena when Alexander Meier cut behind Phillip Lahm and finished coolly. It would be substitutions that made the difference for Bayern, with the not-quite-fit Arjen Robben coming on to tap home the equalizer on 70′ and defenseman Daniel Van Buyten sealing victory on 88′ after being subbed on for the struggling Toni. The last-gasp victory should go a ways towards erasing midweek memories of Bordeaux and sees Bayern take 5th place in the Bundesliga.

Celtic and Rangers suffered horrendous nights in Europe this week and it may finally provide a bit of realism amongst their support.

First Rangers were hammered by some tin pot Romanian side who had more skill, imagination and fight than the Ibrox side. The 4-1 drubbing is arguably the worst result for the Gers in their Champions League history. Before even discussing whether they can qualify or not, they need to address some serious issues like performances and effort, or lack of as the case may be.

Then it was Celtics night to be turned over by one of Germany’s finest. The problem with that description is this Hamburg team had most of the first eleven missing and still looked more comfortable than a confidence stricken Celtic. The result confirms their fortress Parkhead status is well and truly gone. One win in eight European matches at home would confirm this, and that was a meaningless match against Villareal.

The speed of the downturn both Glasgow giants have suffered in the last couple of years has ben startling. Two seasons ago Rangers made it all the way to the UEFA Cup final and Celtic reached the last 16 of the Champions League. This high Scottish football was on then has now been replaced with a realisation that the SPL is financially bankrupt. Both clubs rake in little over a million pounds in TV revenue which is not enough to compete at this level.

Tony Mowbrays European record has been poor

Andy Townsend after the Celtic game was left perplexed as to why they could not spend some good money on two or three players. Andy they have tried this with the likes of Hesselink, Donati and Gravesen, but it did not work and all it did was merely put them into financial difficulty.

All the Old Firm can hope for in the next season or two is to win the league and receive subsequent Champions League money. Even that is no longer guaranteed after next season unless more coefficient points are accumulated. The only hope they have is for some European League or the Premiership to accept their desperate begging, but this is unlikely to happen in the short-term and both have to accept it.

Santiago Cazorla, centrocampista del Villarreal, equipo que ocupa la última posición de clasificación de Primera División tras perder por 2-1 contra el Xerez, reconoció que hay ansiedad en el vestuario del equipo por ganar el primer partido de la temporada en Liga.

El futbolista asturiano afirmó que el hecho de no haber ganado un encuentro de siete partidos en Liga es algo que afecta a los jugadores al ver que “pasan los partidos” y siguen en las posiciones de “abajo”, por lo que apuntó que si ganan el siguiente partido, subirán “puestos en la clasificación”.

“No hay que ponerse nerviosos. A estas alturas no podemos pensar en que vamos a descender. Estamos últimos por muchas circunstancias y hay que intentar cambiar esta dinámica. Tenemos que encontrar lo que hacemos mal para que no pase en el siguiente partido”, anunció Cazorla.

El centrocampista aseguró que la actual situación del Villarreal perjudica “a todos sin excepción” y destacó que empeora en el caso de los jugadores internacionales que pretenden jugar el Mundial de Sudáfrica ya que señaló que si no rinden en el equipo, “será muy complicado” que los convoquen con sus selecciones.

Cazorla confesó que ha visto de nuevo el partido contra el Xerez y opinó que “es mejor ni verlo” puesto que argumentó que la derrota contra el equipo andaluz se produjo por la falta de suerte y el arbitraje que, según el futbolista, perjudicó al Villarreal, por lo que “todo se complica”.

“Pero los árbitros son humanos y también se pueden equivocar.

Tenemos que estar centrados en nosotros mismos y olvidarnos del arbitraje”, apeló.

El asturiano recordó que “hay que pensar partido a partido para salir” del último lugar de la clasificación ya que consideró que “no sirve de nada pensar en clasificarse para la Liga Europa” y añadió que “tan sólo” piensan en ganar el próximo partido de Liga.

Además, Santiago Cazorla defendió al técnico Ernesto Valverde al afirmar que los jugadores del Villarreal confían en él y desean que continué “toda la temporada” porque trabaja “bien” y no pueden pensar en que, si pierden en el encuentro contra el Málaga, que calificó como una “final”, deje de ser el entrenador del equipo.

Respecto al enfrentamiento que tiene el Villarreal este jueves frente al Lazio italiano correspondiente a la Liga Europa, el futbolista anunció que viajan a Roma para ganar y deseó que allí puedan “romper la dinámica en Roma”, aunque es consciente de que “será difícil porque es un campo complicado”.

Cazorla recibió hoy el premio que otorga Sanitas, patrocinador del equipo, ‘al jugador más saludable’ por ser un ejemplo para los jóvenes deportistas “por su entrega en el campo, su capacidad de trabajo en equipo, su calidad física, su afán de superación y por su carisma”, según argumentó esta clínica sanitaria.
