The American news refers to Iran as a grave threat to our nation and to the democracy and freedoms of the world. Its people are usually depicted as bloodthirsty, hurling anti-American sentiments at any video camera that will give them airtime. Is this a true depiction of its people or American media propaganda? Visiting the Tehran Film Festival years ago, Roger Ebert reflected upon its people and stated, “Iranians are no more monolithic than we are…” I am fortunate enough to be on a first name basis with the great wrestler, Hossein Khosrow Ali Vaziri, better known as The Iron Sheik. As a former bodyguard to the Shah of Iran, he gives testimony that the people of his homeland are under great duress and do not spew hatred for America. The Sheik’s love for America is unbridled, as he loves his mother country, its people, and his religion.

This autobiographical tale of a young Iranian subjected to derision is an empathetic tale. Similar to Anna de la Mesa in Julie Gavras’ Blame It On Fidel! the character is thrown into the very adult world of politics and its effect on their youth and their families.

The film’s animation is not comparable to any Pixar picture or Les Triplettes de Belleville. Persepolis is based on Marjane Satrapi’s graphic novels and it is akin to recent Miller films. Such works have done quite well at the box office. Frank Miller’s Sin City and 300 raked in over $600 Million worldwide. Although Miller’s characters are the bearers of death and do battle in such grand style, Marjane, the central character, battles against the oppression of the shifting governments in her homeland. Marjane is a young girl that takes to heart the imprisonment of various people including relatives by different factions of the ruling parties in Iran through the years. Always voicing her opinions and unsettling for the radical impositions, her outward ways prove to be a risk to her well-being. She can be found buying forbidden music such as Iron Maiden, wearing make-up, or being seen in public with a boy. The young girls carefree days are left in the past, as she is required to cover herself in public. For her safety, her parents send her to Austria where she finds lodging with nuns and then a crazy woman. The autocratic rule under both homes is on par with the Iranian ruling party. At first she is dazzled by the supermarket, reminiscing what her homeland once had. Becoming a young woman in the western world facing the grimaces of bigotry and the pitfalls of romance, Marjane eventually returns home to Iran. Sadly, the country is in a tighter grip. She thwarts certain arrest or detainment by the watchful eye of police for wearing make-up by falsely implicating a man on the street as “bothering” her and makes a run for it. This incident is revealed to her grandmother with a bit of zeal that angers the old woman into expressing disdain for the act and questions whether or not Marjane’s uncle had gone to prison so that she can act cowardly and falsely accuse for her own gain. She marries because appearing in public with a male is a harrowing task. However, her marriage wasn’t one of fairytales and she divorces. Ordered by her family to find a home in the free world in which she belongs, she is set free at the airport to join the western world.

The film’s illustrative style is inked in stark black and white and gray as the main character recollects the past. The color segments delineate the present. The B&W results in engulfing the viewer in the dialogue and narration. This effective technique was used in many British films in the 60’s when dialogue was the preferred element. Mike Nichols directed Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and filmed it in black and white because it was decided that Elizabeth Taylor’s eyes would take away from the scripted words. It could also be argued that the use of B&W in Persepolis is due to hindsight being 20/20. With such an argument it would stand to reason that the present day setup would be in color.

This film is still enjoying a successful run at the awards circuit around the globe. In 2007, it triumphed at The National Board of Review by winning The Freedom of Expression Award. The same year it tied with Ratatouille for Best Animation at the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards and took the Jury Prize at The Cannes Film Festival.

Accompanying all the accolades was an underlying force attempting to stop it in its tracks. The ruling political party in Iran did not favor Persepolis. The Iran Farabi Foundation had sent a letter to the French embassy in Tehran with this statement: “This year the Cannes Film Festival, in an unconventional and unsuitable act, has chosen a movie about Iran that has presented an unrealistic face of the achievements and results of the glorious Islamic Revolution in some of its parts.” The 2007 Bangkok International Film Festival Bangkok festival removed the film from its line-up after it was pressured by the Iranian embassy. Chattan Kunjara Na Ayudhaya, public relations director at the Tourism Authority of Thailand said, “We have withdrawn Persepolis … on the request of the Iranian embassy…”

With such a backlash against her work and views, can Satrapi return home to Iran to see her family? Sam Leith reported that,

“Satrapi now lives in Paris and hasn’t been back to Iran since 2000, when the first volume of Persepolis was published. She says that “not one” of her childhood friends still lives in Iran…Since its translation into English; Persepolis has acquired a readership in Iran. Satrapi is satisfied her parents are in no danger, but she says that because Iran is “not a state of law”, her own treatment on return would be subject to the caprices of the officials she came across.”

There are many Iranian filmmakers in the US and abroad that wish to get their films seen and their voices heard. In efforts to get a better understanding of who is the Iranian filmmaker I asked Saeed Shafa of the Iranian Film Festival and the Tiburon International Film Festival. He stated, “There are two groups of Iranian filmmakers. Those who make their films in Iran and those who make them outside Iran. Even though they are both Iranians, but their films and way of thinking are different. Most of those making films outside Iran are born in various countries and are not familiar with the culture inside Iran. Therefore, their films have a different look and angle. And those who make their films in Iran are divided into 2 groups too. First group who makes films for the local market, inside the country and for the people of Iran. The second group who make their films for a foreign audience, outside Iran, mainly for the western audiences.”

Of the women filmmakers living in Iran, do their films resemble the tone of Marjane Satrapi and address similar types of struggle?

“To answer to your question…they know they have to follow some guidelines otherwise they will not be able to make their films. I don’t think the identity is the issue here, even though they set their tone on women, but not necessarily about their struggles, which will bring a lot taboos that they have to deal with. Because of these concerns, their films lack a deep sweep in the society and the issues the Iranian women face today. They try but with a lot of cautious.[sic] This naturally effects the language and the vision they use in their films.”

Not all films strike out against the powers that be. Jafar Panahi is an Iranian born filmmaker. The Iranian government also forbade his films, The Circle and Crimson Gold. Yet, he is also responsible for lighthearted fare. White Balloon is a delightful film about a young Iranian girl in need of a fat goldfish for the new year celebration. She and her brother finagle their mother’s last bit of money. On the way to the store the money is lost to a street performer and once it is retrieved it is again lost elsewhere. The children make a valiant effort to get their money back.

Iran offers the world such a bountiful cinema that it is shameful that in this country foreign films have such a limited appeal. If one is not in New York to go to the Sunshine Cinema or a comparable venue or does not subscribe to IFC, the Sundance Channel or a specific international channel, these films go unseen.

An awesome piece of work, adapted by Marjane Satrapi and Vincent Paronnaud from Satrapi’s grap

An awesome piece of work, adapted by Marjane Satrapi and Vincent Paronnaud from Satrapi’s graphic novel of the same title, ‘Persepolis’ is Satrapi’s part comic, part animated autobiography, focusing on the 1979 Iranian Revolution and how it affected her and her family. It’s intensely political yet warm, engaging, funny and entertaining. It has moments of horror and despair, but offers enormous insight into the social differences between western Europe and not just the fundamentalist caricature of Iran, but the much more liberal and emancipated nation which lies underneath the Islamic Republic. It’s no wonder it got the attention of highly political actors like Sean Penn to do the English voiceover for her father, and he’s not the only big name attached (Gena Rowlands & Catherine Deneuve round out the stellar English language cast).

It’s a fascinating examination of how people can stay individual under extremist rule, and is an oddly enchanting look at Satrapi’s life without the conventions you’d expect using most modern animation techniques; Persepolis is defiantly true to the graphic novel. And yet it works – by making the story the priority and not the animation, you’re left to focus on Satrapi’s life as a child (with her obsessions with Bruce Lee, the Bee Gees and Iron Maiden), and then as an adolescent – the often funnier but largely murkier period in Vienna. Particularly upon her return to Tehran you’re left in no doubt about how difficult it is for freedom to survive there, following the autocracy of the Shah through to the extremism of the revolution and its mad war with Iraq; the people have their ideals but there’s little oxygen for them to take hold. Satrapi finds the reverse true in Europe – plenty of oxygen but few ideals. The Marjane of the film comes across as very lonely indeed, but in her continuing defiance an inspiration for us all. Sometimes simple is best, and it’s highly recommended. 8/10

I know I’ve been hitting y’all with a lot of reviews as I try to catch up, but this will be the last one until the weekend. I hope y’all have noticed I’ve been trying to watch more recent flicks after reviewing so many films from the 60’s to 80’s period. The trend continues with Persepolis (dir. Vincent Paronnaud and Marjane Satrapi, France, 2007).

Being a live-action filmmaker, I am always curious about the different expressive ways possible with animation. The black and white drawings, with thick sinuous lines, merge graphic novel aesthetics with the intricate style of the paper cut-outs of The Adventures of Prince Achmed (sorry to use a German film for a comparison – though I have heard from an indirect source that Satrapi was inspired by German Expressionism). I’m amazed by the puppet-like physics she gives to some of the imaginings, flashbacks, and especially to the depictions of war, creating a horrible, symbol-less, mechanical theater of death. The ability for animation to be un-real and then incredibly real (not in mimetic visual realism but in emotional poignancy, a shuddering of the soul which is more real, more tangible) is used with great effect, from the goofy torture dreamt up by the children to a jasmine blossom from her grandmother floating small and quiet through space. The expressionism in the drawings allows for horrible scenes of smoldering rubble and also for twisted fairy tale flora rising in grace.

The film is in turn funny and deathly serious, irreverent and solemn. At times the brief episodic structure can be uneven but at times it can be transformational, expanding out from the comic strip length with great motion and observation, fading in and out from images like a mournful tune.

I have not even talked about the personal and political insights into the internal struggles of Iran and its effect on the people, from times of great national pride and hope to despair and fear. Not everyone was happy with the depiction; Iran’s government angrily protested the film upon its release.

I haven’t seen Ratatouille, which beat Persepolis for best animated feature film at the 2008 Oscars, but I have a hard time imagining even Pixar magic outshining this incisive, poignant film.

To say Marjane Satrapi led an interesting life is an understatement. Born in Iran in 1969, the graph

To say Marjane Satrapi led an interesting life is an understatement. Born in Iran in 1969, the graphic novelist and filmmaker witnessed the fall of the Shah and the stripping away of civil liberties in her homeland. Marjane’s experiences went into a graphic novel called Persepolis and that graphic novel was made into a 2007 animated feature directed by Satrapi and French comic artist Vincent Paronnaud.

In many ways, Persepolis is merely a coming-of-age story set to the backdrop of the Iranian Revolution. The film, which won the 2007 Jury Prize at Cannes, follows Marjane through her life using elegant animation in both black and white and colour. We begin with Marjane in the airport smoking. She begins to think back to her life in Iran in 1979 and we follow her thoughts back to where she was born. As a young girl, Marji had dreams of becoming a prophet. She loved Bruce Lee. As an adult, her idealism has drained out.

The film uses Marjane’s memories and black and white animation to highlight the historical context behind the young girl’s experiences. We learn of the uprising against the Shah, the hopes of the Iranians for a more just society, the unity of family in tough times, and the crushing reality of war. Throughout it all, Marji has a more urgent task. She is precocious, listens to Iron Maiden, and later heads to school in Austria to “grow up.”

The animation style of Persepolis is similar to that of the graphic novels. The simple black and white shimmers with remarkable detail. The style attempts to fit Marjane’s massive story into a 98-minute frame and succeeds wonderfully. This is an animated film for adults, one that is dazzling to look at and loaded with context and information to ponder.

In many ways, Persepolis is an ultimately refreshing coming-of-age tale in a decade loaded with them. Here we have a young woman with purpose and with legitimate trials to overcome. And she does overcome, marvellously and elegantly in her own way. She offers hope when there is little and keeps her wits about her as long as she can. But the crush of things and the weight of life eventually wear Marjane down and Persepolis allows us to experience that, too. We break when she does.

For the sake of this review, I watched the English dubbed version of the movie. The vocal talents were tremendous, with Chiara Mastroianni voicing teenage and adult Marjane in both the French and English versions. Catherine Deneuve is Marji’s mother in both versions, while Sean Penn voices the father in the English version. The father in the French version is voiced by the one and only Simon Abkarian. Also featured in the English version is Iggy Pop as Uncle Anouche.

Persepolis is a special motion picture. Painstakingly animated and brimming with vibrancy, this film yearns to be seen. Show it to your children, if you have any, and explain it to them tolerantly. They (and you) will learn about life from another point of view and about growing up as a human being in a world that is often uncertain, upsetting, and unsafe. They’ll also learn that it’s okay to hope, laugh, play, and listen to Iron Maiden at full volume.

9.3/10

FILM: “Persepolis”(2007) e defapt o animatie, una foarte reusita.

MELODIE: Jack White si Alicia Keys – “Another way to die”, soundtrack-ul noului Bond. Desi filmul imi displace, melodia imi place foarte mult.

Persepolis
[ 3 stars out of 4 ]

This may be an animated film on the outside but don’t let that fool you. This is a heavily political, self-aware, coming of age film that focuses on an inquisitive Iranian girl that turned into a strong Iranian woman. I have to admit that I didn’t understand the politics because I don’t know much about the history of Iran. So, it took me a while to get used to the background of the story. Things really started to pick up when the focus turns to the character; how she had to lose people she loved because of the Islamic Revolution, her immigration to western Europe, her experience with boys, and her eventual return to her home country. I thought this was a very insightful film but the drama wasn’t heavy-handed. In fact, there were a lot of humorous scenes from time to time in order to make the story a little lighter. I could relate with the main character’s rebellion even though I didn’t go through the same things she did, whether it’s hanging out with people who are outsiders themselves or immersing herself with hard rock music. Her most sensitive episodes when she came to be embarrassed of who she is and where she came from is not far from what I had experienced when I had to assimilate when I was new in America. This really is an impressive not-so-ordinary animated film because it aims to bring down barriers: that animated movies are mainly for children. I must also give kudos to Vincent Paronnaud and Marjane Satrapi for writing and directing this good-hearted picture. I also admired the voice-over of the main character by Chiara Mastroianni. I enthusiastically recommend this movie because it’s something different and it really does have a great message about our relationship with our cultural identities.

Counterfeiters, The (2007)
[ 3 stars out of 4 ]

I thought I’ve already seen all the kinds of stories about the concentration camps in World War II so this movie really surprised me. This is the first time I’ve seen a movie that took the angle of the counterfeiters’ experience in the camps (I wasn’t even aware that the Nazis had the operation until I heard about this film). Not only is it interesting, the style of it made me feel like I was right there with the characters. Although slow in some parts, those are more than forgiven because the film is undeniably well-written and well-directed. I got this feeling that desperation is always in the air even though the characters are being treated “well” (as opposed to the ones not in the counterfeiting operation). All of the actors did a convincing job playing their roles, notably Karl Markovics and Devid Striesow. They embodied their roles with such intensity that it was fascinating to see them interact. I also enjoyed how each character can be placed different points on the moral spectrum; their choices in action and words make them complex characters worth spending time with. This is generally a very good film but it’s even better if one is hoping for a different vantage point regarding the victims in the concentration camps.

Baghead
[ 3 stars out of 4 ]

I adore films that are able to prove that you can make a movie for basically next to nothing, but if it has a clever script then most of the other crucial components will come into place. I must mention Jay Duplass and Mark Duplass for writing and directing a movie that made me laugh and feel fear most often wrapped in one scene (some of the humor are borderline darkly comic). Even though it took its merry time to establish the characters and their motivations, hand-held camera and all, it was an interesting watch from start to finish. We find out something about each character after each minute, whether they may be talking about nothing or just sitting in awkward silence. Speaking of awkward, I did adore the awkward humor, which I don’t want to go into specifics because I don’t want to ruin the surprise for those who are interested in watching the film. I also want to commend the four actors: Ross Partridge, Steve Zissis, Greta Gerwig, and Elise Muller. Even though their acting might be a bit amateurish, I liked their zeal. Somehow, their style worked because I feel like they are people I can meet anywhere; they seem very amicable. But I must say that they’re really good at freaking out and being cute with each other, basically the extremes. As for the horror aspect of this picture, I have to admit that I did get scared at times, especially during the night scenes, specifically in the last thirty minutes. This is a pretty effective horror-comedy that almost feels like a documentary because of the hand-held camera. Don’t let the low budget scare you because the filmmakers really do have something interesting to offer.

Iranian born Marjane Satrapi was in many ways a typical adolescent girl – opinionated, defiant

Iranian born Marjane Satrapi was in many ways a typical adolescent girl – opinionated, defiant and rebellious yet a bit of a romantic and very devoted to her family. What sets her apart from so many others is that she lived through the Iranian Revolution, the rise of Islamic Fundamentalism, the Iran/Iraq war and almost dying homeless on the streets of Vienna. Persepolis is the animated film adaptation of Satrapi’s widely acclaimed autobiographical graphic novels about those times.

Like the graphic novel Maus: A Survivor’s Tale, which was an influence for Satrapi, Persepolis tells a deeply personal story against the backdrop of very significant historical events. This film version, which Satrapi co-wrote and co-directed, has retained the graphic novel’s simple black and white style, giving the characters a surprising depth and empathy.

While Persepolis mourns the suffering of the Iranian people under the various oppressive political regimes, it is also a joyful depiction of how life goes on. Satrapi is a wonderfully impulsive free spirit and many of her experiences in Tehran and Vienna are very funny. Persepolis is extremely entertaining, often moving and an eye-opener to those of us who know little about Iran.

Persepolis
Dir: Vincent Paronnaud & Marjane Satrapi
Rating: 3.5/5

Persepolis is not your average coming of age story. Adapted from her graphic novel of the same name, this is Marjane Satrapi’s account of her childhood in Iran amid the backdrop of the Islamic revolution in the country and her own burgeoning sense of displacement and rebellion. She listens to disco and then Iron Maiden, embracing a western culture purged in her own world but allowed by her more liberal parents and grandmother. As she gets older, she begins to rebel in different ways, holding hands with boys outside of marriage and helping her parents to purge their apartment of alcohol before the state police can find it.

The bones of the story are great as a fan of memoir and there is much to love in the film. Satrapi’s lead is very sweet and she captures some wonderfully pertinent and identifiable moments of youthfulness. There’s a particularly relatable moment when she fickly changes her political views as a youngster after listening to different opinions. Her moments too with Iron Maiden are really nicely played and a sense of warmth towards the character is nurtured. The animation is fantastic, capturing the playful naivety of another great French animated movie, Belleville Rendezvous, if never escaping into the fantastical.

The problem with Persepolis, and I would stress that I did really like the film overall, is that it lacks a real emotional punch to elevate it to a really memorable level. The film is very sweet and contains some moving moments but nothing that really catches hold and stays in the memory. Part of this issue comes from Satrapi being somewhat postmodern about her recollections. The montage scene where she warbles ‘Eye of the Tiger’ feels forced and out of place with the rest of the film which seems to be teetering on the edge of realism. That realism exists in the story but it’s never fully explored. Another problem is the concentration on Satrapi. Although she does act as a nice representation of modern Islamic female progressionism, she isn’t really an enormously interesting character. Spending more time with some of the peripheral characters, notably her sparky grandmother, would’ve paid dividends in allowing the audience to understand her life and the people around her.

As a whole though, it’s a sweet and well-rendered piece that just maybe lacks the wallop I felt it wanted to give.

โดยมี Nike, Adidas เสื้อแจ็คเก็ตที่สกรีนหลังว่า ‘Punk Is Not Ded’ และเข็มกลัด Thriller ของไมเคิล แจ็คสัน (ที่ Marjane ต้องแอบอ้างว่าเป็นเข็มกลัด Malcolm X!)

The Adventures of Prince Achmed

Yesterday, I finally got to see the film adaptation of Marjane Satrapi’s ‘Persepolis

Yesterday, I finally got to see the film adaptation of Marjane Satrapi’s ‘Persepolis‘. Persepolis is an auto-biographical story about growing up in Iran during the revolution. I am a huge fan of the original comics, as well as her other works. Satrapi draws bold images, full of blocks of colour and an exotic style which really give flavour to her work. What makes this film particularly exciting is that it was written and co-directed by Satrapi herself and her fellow comic artist Vincent Paronnaud.

So how did it fare on the big screen? I loved it! The art looks great and it was a pleasure to see the characters move and interact on screen. I saw a screening with the original French soundtrack and the voice acting fits perfectly. The English subtitle translations seem good too.

The story is a mix of her experiences growing up and the political situation around her. In fact, it is impossible to separate the two. Every aspect of her life from her relationships to her music tastes are permeated by the politics around her and her identity as an Iranian. Similarly, observing their everyday lives, it is clear to see how the religious is the political. Satrapi is also blessed with having an intelligent and caring family, who are always ready to explain things and let her express her views. Life is not always easy and Satrapi tries to tell it like it is without glamorizing tragedy or covering up her faults and mistakes. I almost forgot to mention that she has a wicked sense of humour and is unafraid to speak her mind, so if you’re imagining some kind of quiet, subservient, muslim girl, think again…

If you want to see a fantastically animated, absorbing tale of an intelligent, feisty girl growing up with the Islamic Revolution and much else besides, then head along to your local cinema now!
