you can’t have the coolest kid on the block without a vintage jean jacket or denim vest, which reminds me i need to pick up one of these for lo since he so strangely has outgrown his.

this health-tex jacket is great with selvedge-like denim and red stitching:

here’s a great “baby biker” vest for your lil guy with white zippers and stitching, great for layering:

billy the kid brand in royal blue with white stitching, hard to find something like this in such a small size:

i’ve been loving the engineer stripes lately and would buy this in a minute if lo were about half his size, knew i should have bound his arms and chest when he was born…

this is probably my favorite jacket of the bunch, dark denim, white stitching, and just the coolest classic pockets and lines:

classic wrangler vest with sherpa/shearling lining:

…and brown denim! also billy the kid brand:

We’ve all had that moment: you put together an outfit and at first it seems real cute to you,

We’ve all had that moment: you put together an outfit and at first it seems real cute to you, but then you start to wonder “where am I going with this on?” Then you start to hear other people in your mind ask the same question, “Where are you going with that on?”

If you’re like me, most of the time you shrug your shoulders, say “oh well,” then walk out the house anyways with your head held high and our spirit full of confidence in your look.

Today, as I played around with mixing printed patterns, I felt as if I had a “Where are you going with that on?” moment. I had moment or two where I questioned the outfit before I finally settled on it and walked out the door. Now,some might say that mixing prints is a fashion “no-no” while others, like myself, might disagree. I personally don’t believe in too many fashion rules. I tend to choose my outfit based on what I like and what I feel most comfortable in.

However, I’m sure 1/2 the stuff I wear, from the outside looking in, might look crazy to other people. And I’ve reached a conclusion: that’s ok. But what makes the difference is confidence. A person’s style should be defined by their confidence, or at least in my opinion. A few years ago I wouldn’t have dared wear 1/2 the things I do now. I didn’t have the confidence then, that I do today.

Back then, I once dressed for other people so to speak. I would put on clothes with name brands just be socially excepted. I wanted to fit in with the trend of the time. Now I put on what is pleasing to me regardless of the name brand, the price or current trend. Overtime I’ve learned to not let the opinions of others dictate my style. If that were the case now, I’d never leave my house and feel comfortable being me.

The outfit I wore today:

Risky Business: Mixing printed top and bottom

Mix n Match: Black and white pinstripe ruffle top with a blue and white pleated skirt with a pearl print pattern

I also paired this outfit with simple accessories, like my pair of yellow diamond earrings from Forever 21. I kept the accessories simple because the patterns were already a lot. Also, the skirt is actually an old skirt from my grandma’s closet. I fell in love with the color and pattern on it and begged her to wear it. Nothing gets more vintage than that!

1980s, all chrome, bmx style tricycle…5 bucks. stoked. this is by far the coolest trike on the planet and lo is the proud new owner. retro bmx stickers still intact, most of the chrome is still shining, and bar pad is in amazing condition. i only spent about a half hour cleaning it up a bit and shining the chrome with aluminum foil, but i’ll probably add it to the list of projects that i won’t actually finish, and further polish the chrome and fix the rims as much as possible (there is a bit of “more than surface” rust on them).

i think it is my destiny, and i’m being totally serious here (i’m not), to find the perfect vintage t-shirts for winslow. so far, this vintage park city ski tee i found at a thrift store awhile back has met every requirement; fits great, awesome logo, good colors, cost $1, and holds up to over-wearing and excessive dirt, food, and drool:

i think overalls were made for little boys (yes, you are correct in my implying they are not for adults). i also think most new overalls do not have anything on many of the vintage styles. here are a few vintage pairs (mostly from etsy) that scream classic style and are all boy.

you can always find a pair of oshkosh conductor overalls, but i like these to mix it up a bit. my son just grew out of this same pair of vintage health-tex overalls (link provided, but not sure they have made anything cool since the hyphen was removed, stay tuned), by far the best fit and style he’s owned:

not sure what brand these are, but i like the bronze zipper across the chest:

these are listed as round house union made overalls (pretty great site, classic, and apparently they hold the world record for largest overalls), so not only does that sound cool, i really like the different front pocket combo and wide stripe:

and these are another good take on the conductor overalls, with red stitching and denim mixed in:

and for some color, these royal blue health-tex overalls are pretty cool:

or these vintage kelly green overalls by “cutecumber” (gotta love that logo):

or cherry red denim oshkosh if you wanna go bright:

and another pair of blue, but in corduroy, also oshkosh:

and last, a super cool pair of coveralls, conductor style, and vintage (oshkosh). now i’m pretty sure my son is not tough enough to pull these off and the dad of the kid should have at least a full sleeve tat (once again, at least), but i might have to scoop them anyways as i’ve never seen another pair and they are classic:

Platform shoes are a favorite trend of mine that are extra hot this summer with designers stacking them high and thick. Where did this trend come from? Though the 1970′s skyscraper platforms may have caused people to shake uncontrollably to disco, I want to take you to the root of the trend, the cultures, and the times behind the platform shoe. The platform first walked into fashion in Ancient Greek theater to show the level of importance of its characters. It served a similar purpose among the courtesans and high-born prostitutes in sixteenth century Venice. A different use for the Platform was adopted by early eighteenth century Europeans were the platform kept their owner high and dry on dirty roads and streets. This form of wear was originally taken from the Geta of Japan.

It was not until the 1930s when this fashion marvel would begin to make its comeback with a subtler platform in a peep toe or closed toe look. The 1940s brought us designer Salvatore Ferragamo and his elaborate platform creations, although most consumers stuck to a subdued version similar to the 30′s stlye. The Subtle Platform continued trending all the way to the 1950s, but the 1960s brought in a new and more eccentric shoe. This trend was first adopted by Europe and eventually caught on state side were it enjoyed great popularity during the 60s, 70s, and even some of the 1980s. At the height of its popularity Disco and Glam Rockers adopted the trend taking it to new outrageous heights. The platfrom, now mainstream was unstoppable and accepted by tweens, disco queens, even men. The 1990s shed some light on the style with designers and musicians like the Spice Girls leading the way.

What goes up must come down or so they say but this trend rolls with the punches showing up in history time and time again. The platform Shoe is here in 2012 with designers like Alexander Mcqueen, Vivienne Westwood, and my personal and more affordable fave Jeffrey Campbell, creating killer skyscrapping looks. If drama is what you crave this summer look no further and put on some eye-catching Platforms!

Kats Tips To Looking Hip

Platforms with skits and shorts give a great what i call ballerina leg even if you’re not the tallest person

Keep it minimalistic. Avoid looking like a member from kiss for summer, try bright Plats to give your outfit a makeover from the ground up.

Rock your Platforms during the day with some great shorts and tank or button down to get that effortless “I always look like this ” look.

nautical stripes are an easy way for your boy to look cool and classic, especially since most brands have some variation to choose.

here’s a double exposed pic of lo taken with my diana f+ camera. he’s rocking an american apparel striped sweatshirt (kids striped fleece raglan pullover), a must have for any boy’s closet and great for layering:

here’s a vintage “swedish” nautical striped shirt listed on etsy for a 6-12mo:

zara has some unique takes on the nautical stripe, i like this shirt with the darker pocket:

winslow has a couple striped shirts by joah love that my wife found on zulily (or some similar sight that is pretty close to retail after shipping costs…sigh). not only are they unique and stylish, but they have definitely held up despite his two left toddler feet, food to shirt skills, and let’s face it, what might be considered an obscene amount of drooling. i know i’ve posted this photo before, but he’s wearing one of the joah love shirts and it’s one of my favorite pics:

here’s a pic of some stripes from their site:

here’s a cool vintage tank that would be great for summer, might have to scoop it up for lo since it looks like a small 4t:

i also like this striped shirt since it is vintage, but could easily be designed today with it’s red and blue mix and white buttoned shoulder:

and as stated by the seller, this “totally rad, green and black striped long sleeved tee” does have a good color combo and would be great for layering (and how could i not buy it looking so rad next to that globe):

stripes are everywhere and if you ask me (as you should), i think they are pretty timeless on our little guys.

So I have been shamelessly obsessed with thrifting for the past year or two! My obsession began when I started getting really bored with the same old mass produced clothes being sold in all the popular retail stores. Don’t get me wrong, I love me some H&M and Forever 21, but everything starts to look the same after a while. I wanted to find things that were unique, stuff that nobody else could get there hands on. So where do I go…the thrift store obviously!

I absolutely love when I find vintage pieces and old band tee’s! What are some of your guy’s favourite thrifting finds? I would love to see some of them!

For today’s OOTD I decided to wear a couple of my latest thrifting finds; a plaid skirt and a vintage Tommy Hilfiger oversized denim jacket! I think i’m going to stud the shoulders of the jacket. Let me know if you want to see a DIY on how I do it?!?

Shorts were first introduced for men in the 1890′s -if for nothing else- but for comfort. It was about time that a cooler alternative was offered to the gentleman who were always stuck in sweltering pants! Women trends followed the influences of WWI — i.e. women began finding themselves joining the workforce. Levi reacted to the changing dynamic with a high waisted jean short. It was designed to handle the curves of a woman yet remained within society’s conservative norms. But if it were not for noted fashion designer Mary Quant –would the look have lasted all the way through the 60′s into the early 70′s? Thanks Mary!

The 1980′s showed some love for the trend with pop icons like Madonna. But it was not until recently that the high waisted short has come back in full force! With the blossoming of Spring, the Runways are flooded with high waisted looks from Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana, etc. Take center stage this spring and grab a new pair! Don’t limit yourself for just daytime activities either. Why not dress up them up for evening? History repeats it self, but you don’t have to. Here are a few tips on getting that perfect ready-to-wear look for day or night with your new high waisted shorts:

Crop tops are another fabulous silhouette to consider. There are tons of great styles featured this spring. And don’t be scared to try anything with a fringe!

Take your look into the evening with heels. This elongates and tones the booty– for a look that pops!

Less is more! Don’t over-do-it with new trends. Keep it simple. Let the look speak for its self.

This right here, is a SUPER FANTASTIC idea from House & Home. I LOVE this idea so much, because I have so many pretty tea tins that I just couldn’t bear to throw out. I must get some herbs and pretty little fleurs for the window sill. Now I need to find a use for all those vintage cigarette tins I bought a couple summers ago in P.E.I. Any ideas?

This outfit exemplifies my two loves: vintage and modern! Something about finding a pretty vintage dress just makes you feel like you won some sort of prize doesn’t it? Maybe it’s the rarity of it…to know the chances of walking down the street and seeing another girl wearing the same piece are pretty slim to none. I love pairing vintage pieces with modern ones…perfect mix in my opinion!

baseball season is in full effect and i’ve always been a fan of vintage (and good throwback) b

baseball season is in full effect and i’ve always been a fan of vintage (and good throwback) baseball gear. i rocked a 1970s-early 80s houston astros jersey on a regular basis in college, even though i went to school in the pnw and had honestly never even been to texas. as a die hard mariners fan, this was risky, but you all know the jersey with orange, yellow, and red stripes and a huge star (think early nolan ryan)…this thing was classic.

now i’m a pretty avid searcher when it comes to vintage for lo, and i have to admit, good baseball pieces can be hard to come by, especially for your team. here’s the jacket i found online for lo. bought it from the guy who wore it as a kid (1964!). great vintage jacket with old team logo patches:

check the vintage mariners replica batting helmet (of course it’s not mine, or part of my personal collection…). these are somewhat easy to find, especially online, and fairly cheap, so keep a lookout. they are the helmets they gave away back in the day when they had “batting helmet night”. winslow is 2 and a half now, and with the internal adjustment strap at its smallest setting, it almost fits. here are a few on etsy:

and here are a few things i found online for you to scoop up or just to give you some ideas.

authentic, vintage chicago cubs kids jersey:

vintage satin baseball jacket, size 2. looks new, might have to scoop this up for lo:

this was a little hard to post (for obvious mariners fans reasons), so lets just say i am posting this for a friend who is a red sox fan seattle transplant (if you’ve been to safeco field, this is far from a rare breed). you know who you are and you’re welcome (and this vintage boston jersey is really cool):

a little cheesy (property of), but this vintage dodgers t-shirt has pretty good colors and graphics. size 1:

if you are a cincinnati fan (or your son is and you’re not, little traitor), you should probably pick this up, size 18mo (new old stock):

one more vintage baseball winbreaker type jacket, size 18mo:

If you need light, this DIY is for you. This project cost fifteen bucks. Thats pretty cheap, so you could for sure do this if you were poor. Five Bucks for spray paint, five bucks for the lamp at Value Village, and five bucks for the lamp shade at IKEA. To be completely real right now, I could just show you a picture of the finished product and then you could just guess at how to do this. You don’t need a step by step tutorial on how to spray paint a fucking lamp. HOWEVER, this way is more fun…for me.

Step 1: Get your shit together.

Step 2: Cover the light socket with tape and plastic. Do this with the cord too.

Step 3: Get out your spray paint and “have at er”

Step 4: You thought you were done, BUT im in charge here, you know, THE BOSS, and I say do another coat because you’re a dumbass.

Step 5: Place your lamp on a distressed night side table, preferably one that has a distressed picture frame above it. Shits about to get real because Dorothy, Blanche, and Rose will be SO excited when they get home. Dorothy’s voice might even go up an octave, but don’t count on it.
