Ankle Biters “Forget about what you’ve seen in the movies. All the legends are bogus: Va

Ankle Biters

“Forget about what you’ve seen in the movies. All the legends are bogus: Vampires like sunlight, stakes don’t work, garlic is delicious and I really, really wish I was Blade, but unfortunately I happen to be lame.”

Jarv’s Rating: 0 fucking Changs. Walter most unimpressed.

Alright, I own up- I did doctor the end of that quote.

I’ve been on a right run of garbage recently. I actually saw this before Return of The Living Dead 2, but it made me die a bit inside, so I haven’t got round to writing it up until today.

Let me be absolutely clear about this from the start: this film is an abhorrent pile of garbage, I have nothing good at all to say about it. It’s grossly incompetent, but not in a fun way, the acting is awful, it neglects the absolute basics of making a film, the special effects are dire, the writing is atrocious, it is completely incoherent and it is no fun whatsoever.

This really makes me cross, because the premise is gold and the trailers make it sound much better than it actually is. My tolerance level for these kinds of films is extremely high, I can put up with more than most and can find something good to say about such absolute mince as Head Cheerleader, Dead Cheerleader. So for a film to get a 100% negative review from me, it has to actually work on being bad. Mere laziness and incompetence won’t cut it. This is that film.

The premise of the film is that in the near future the world (read- America) is being overrun by a vicious plague of biker vampire midgets and only Drexel (a half-vampire hybrid that thinks he’s the white version of Blade) and a motley crew of hunters can deal with it (one of the hunters is, incidentally, a multi-millionaire who lives in a white trash farm house- but it’s OK, you can tell he’s a millionaire because he is introduced buying a painting in a gallery. That’s how rich he is, he can buy art). Midget vampires can only make other vampires of diminished stature- to make a normal sized person a vampire they need a normal sized vampire. Luckily for them, there’s a magic sword around and if they kill someone with it, he becomes a big vampire. Cue boredom and irritation, before the most lame showdown I’ve ever seen.

As is usual with vampire films nowadays, they go out of their way to reinvent hundreds of years of Vampire mythology. Drexel kindly explains it, (yawn) but apparently everything we thought we knew about Vampires is actually rubbish. They can only be killed by injecting them with Vampire blood (what, why?), can wonder around in daylight, garlic etc doesn’t work, and so on. I understand that most of these were for budgetary reasons, and I can deal with that, but why the blood thing?

Midgets in these films almost always equal gold- see Chopper Chicks or the mighty Leprechaun films for examples of how to use midgets for fun and profit. This film is a rock solid example of how not to do it. Firstly, when dealing with dwarves the problem is always going to be getting round how fucking silly it looks when a normal sized person fights someone three feet smaller then him. Leprechaun managed it by cheating and using magic. Chopper Chicks humiliated the dwarf for entertainment. However, here, they fail by having people either fall over and wait for the dwarves to jump on and beat them up or (ridiculously) have the dwarf cling on to the back of the person he’s fighting. It’s awful and embarrasing.

However, as much as the waste of midget comdy gold makes me cross, my special anger is reserved for the Helen Keller clone that did the sound work in this. I appreciate that it was made for no money whatsoever, possibly on a camcorder, but someone needs a slap. You can hear the people close to the camcorder really clearly, but if the person speaking is more than 3 feet from it, you can’t hear a damned word. Not a word. The remote for the telly at Casa del Jarv was constantly in action adjusting the volume to try to make out what they were saying before I chucked a huff and sat and watched it in near silence (although the volume was set to pretty near max)with the look of a lottery winner that had lost his ticket on my face.

And as for the action scenes: Just. Fuck. Off.

Again, budgetary issues are at the heart of this, but having Drexel jump from the ground up onto a high gate backwards is not a special effect. Especially when it’s patently obvious that they filmed it by having him jump down from the fucking gate then inserted it in reverse in the film. (This is kind of indicative of the “special” effects in the film. Every so often Blade Drexel takes his sunglasses off to reveal lame contact lenses, and the vampire fangs are blatantly from a joke shop.) Or the fight scene where it looks like Drexel is getting buggered by the big biker vampire dude. And don’t even get me started on the showdown.

Did I mention that this film is also boring. And not just a little bit, terribly, awfully fucking dull. There’s shot after shot after shot of cars and bikes driving around for no apparent reason, and when every vampire in the town turns up at the showdown, they drive around in circles for what feels like forever. Aaaaaaaargh.

So, given all of the above, would I recommend it? Absolutely fucking not, under no circumstances would I even consider saying anything good about it at all. There isn’t even any gratuitous titty shots to enliven things- which is a must for low budget schlock.

This leads me to my conclusion- who is to blame for this? It would be easy to blame Adam Minarovich, being as he wrote it, directed it, starred in it, roped his friends and family in to working on it (his parents even did the catering), but I don’t blame him. That’s far too easy. I want to widen the net and find the real culprit of this atrocity. It could be the dickheads that picked it up for distribution, but I see them more as collateral damage. I think the person to blame for it is: THE FUCKING WALLMART EMPLOYEE THAT SOLD THAT MASSIVE TOOL MINAROVICH A DIGITAL CAMERA.

I’m tempted to fly to Buttfuck, Arizona or wherever the fuck this disgrace was filmed, find that asshat and beat him to death with my laptop. It’s all his fault.

If Die You Zombie Bastards didn’t exist then Ankle Biters would be the worst film I’ve ever seen. The film that manages to be so bad it’s actually bad.

(source)

Can bystanders who cheer on a criminal invoke their right to free speech, or can the government prosecute them and hence limit their right to free speech? An infamous example is public rape, a particularly horrendous crime in which a man or group of men rapes a woman in a public space, for example a bar, while being loudly encouraged by a group of bystanders, most of whom will probably be sexually aroused by the spectacle. The movie “The Accused” offers a classic depiction of such a crime, and is based on a real-life public gang-rape.

The case of cheering bystanders and their right to free speech is similar, although not identical to some other cases discussed previously in this blog series, such as hate speech, speech that teaches the methods of illegal activity, death threats, and incitement to violence. These cases are similar because it’s assumed that all these forms of speech can produce violence or can make violence more likely.

Eugene Volokh, normally very hesitant to allow restrictions on free speech, says that prosecution should be possible

on the grounds that the cheering tends to encourage the criminal and thus constitutes “abett[ing].” “An aider and abettor is one who acts with both knowledge of the perpetrator’s criminal purpose and the intent of encouraging or facilitating commission of the offense.” People v. Avila, 38 Cal. 4th 491, 564 (2006). (source)

In some circumstances, the bystanders are even strict accomplices in the sense that they aid the criminal in his or her actions: their cheering may make it impossible for others to intervene because they seal off the crime scene, or the cheering can include precise instructions. One can also imagine cases in which the criminals wouldn’t have acted if not for the cheering. But even if the bystanders are not strict accomplices in any of these senses, they are surely guilty of criminal failure to assist persons in need. Instead of cheering, they should have called the police. So, in all these cases, the bystanders help the crime occur, even if all they do is vaguely encourage someone. Hence they cannot claim that their right to free speech should protect them against criminal prosecution.

I was quite surprised to come across this video posted by youtube draddee.

Adam Lambert helped choose his dancers for his show.

That is the role of a producer.

I can see that Adam likes to be involved in everything, not only in the composing of the music, the lyrics and songs, but he also will probably want to do the directing and producing down the road.

He has the experience to do it after being in the industry for ten years, I’m sure he will produce some very interesting shows for us in the future.

Imagine how much trouble he can get in if he has no rules at all!

Will he take it to the extreme next time and prove a point that he should not be discriminated against for doing things that Madonna, Britney and Lady Gaga have done for years?

He did have a point there.

They have been doing racy performances for years, and there’s never been one word about it.

Let a man do it and all hell breaks loose!

Is it fate?

Or is it perfect timing?

Didn’t we just have a big country wide discussion about gay marriage?

Equal rights and all that?

And now Adam Lambert is showing his true colors and some of us may not like what we see.

I think he’s become quite comfortable with performing, because it looked to me like he didn’t think twice about what he was doing.

And the criticism didn’t seem to faze him either.

Adam Lambert has thick skin and we are going to have to either deal with him the way he is, or lose a great artist because of our close minded ways.

Pardon me for saying close minded but this is 2009 and things do change.

We’ve become comfortable with gays in our cities and on our streets, but some of us still balk when we see it there on the TV.

In time, if you watch it enough, it will become second nature and it will not bother you at all.

You know why I say that?

Look at the types of movies that came out ten to twenty years ago, they were very tame, not too violent and just touching on the topic of being gay.

Now we have everything out in the open, it’s freedom of speech, free to be who you want to be without any recrimination.

Yet some of us, still have a problem dealing with all the changes that have happened in society.

In time I believe we will overcome our differences and learn to be comfortable with things that used to get to us.

Maybe it’s fate that brought Adam Lambert to be famous and to open up new pathways in our thinking and dealing with something that we’ve not always been totally comfortable with.

You never complained about the violence in SAW 6 the movie, with the horrible death scenes, the gore, humans being tortured and people enjoy watching that, and no one says a word about it?

No want wants it BANNED from the theatre because it’s too violent.

Yet a person who has chosen a different lifestyle then most of us, chooses to let it all hang out, and be free to kiss, show affection, make fun, and entertain us, like he would in a bar during a Drag Queen Show and we all get in an uproar about it?

It just doesn’t make sense does it?

Our children are faced with being gay from the age of 5, when they first start school, some boys will notice that they develop feelings for another boy.

But no one thinks about that, we all seem to think that boys don’t become gay until they are adults?

Well that’s not true at all.

Talk to anyone who is gay and they will tell you, they knew from a very young age, that it was what they wanted to be.

I felt the need to address the issue because it was on my mind all day, bothering me.

It bugged me to see Adam Lambert perform that way and I’m a huge fan of his.

It bugged me because I’m not used to it, yet.

I know in time, I’ll disregard it, just like I do when I watch a movie and a woman gets raped, or someone gets their head cut off in a scene.

We become oblivious to it after awhile and accept it.

I wonder if we will accept the way Adam Lambert performs, or will we continue to balk at it?

Only time will tell, all I’m saying is, we love his voice, his talent and his songs, so don’t hold it against him if he chooses to be different.

He’s said right from the start that he would be different and start a new trend, and I can see now that he meant every word of it!

Adam Lambert, left, surprises keyboardist Tommy Radliff with a kiss as he performs during the closing act of the 37th Annual American Music Awards on Sunday, Nov. 22, 2009, in Los Angeles.

Why do they always blame ME?

The devil..is sitting by the side of the road..his cloven hoofed hands, pressed against his cheeks as he weeps tears..sobbing like a baby…In and amongst the sobbing I can hear him muttering to himself..”why me..Why me..it wasnt me..I ask him whats the matter?

With that he looks up with his sullen dark eyes and says..They blame me..for everything..like its my fault. Who I said alarmingly who’s blaming you? Humanity he exclaims!….everything is the devil made me do it , the devil made me do it…it was the devil..as he sobs again head down in his cloven hands..!!!

Responsibility for the life we live and the decisions we make cannot be shifted off to someone or something else if we really are to know integrity and change for good. For r years the Devil and other entities like him have been the whipping post for our own lack of personal responsibility for the lives we live and ultimately end up with. It was the drugs, the alcohol, the wife, the kids, the mortgage, the …whatever it may be that made me do it.

Not that anyone ever really believes you..as it is only yourself that you’re fooling , and there is no greater fool then the fool that deceives himself. With it being White Ribbon Day yesterday globally I guess it’s pertinent to discuss the issue of personal responsibility as often the excuse around this sort of violence is very much about putting the blame on someone or something else. Violence against Women is not OK. In fact violence against anyone isn’t that fantastic. And yes we live in a world stupefied with violence. Unbelievable the growth of cage fighting, UFC and MMA. The fact that these bare knuckle dust ups now have global cult followings is incredible to say the least. Our national sport is violent, we grow up playing a violent game, the Haka is violent, in its challenge and in essence what it is trying to provoke and what it precedes is 80 minutes of controlled violence between 30 men.

I have played violent sport all my life and still do. The whole country came to a stand still when David Tua violently knocked the bejesus out of Shane Cameron and we all applauded and talked about his two rounds of ignominy for weeks afterwards. The world stage applauds and worships the likes of Muhammad Ali, Joe Frasier and in New Zealand Richie McCaw, Rodney So’ioalo’ and Maa Nonu. These men live and make their living being violent to other men. SO where do we draw the distinction between what is and isnt violence we find tolerable and acceptable.

Obviously violence against the weak, the poor, the helpless, children and women. And Men? Well I’m not so sure about that. Maybe deep in our western psyche as we are bombarded with men committing acceptable violence on each other daily, through TV, sports and media. We have become so accustomed to violence against men, and maybe desensitized to its impact on the male species. Strange as it may seem, part of us doesn’t want men to be violent and yet there is a part that feeds of this diet of violence that men are capable of committing against one another. Working in security for a long time it’s not been unusual to be asked to be calm, cordial and friendly..but should merry hell brake loose to be able to beat the living daylights out of any would be attacker. This dichotomy of expectation almost seems to me an expedient view on violence. Where necessary and where practical do what I do, not want you to do…but should it require it do what you know you can do and with the greates efficiency.

Is it that we don’t want the devil on our side, or that when push comes to shove and should we find our backs up against the wall we definitely want the devil in our corner. I know for a certainty that should I ever be in a position where I am about to be assaulted by a group of guys, I definitely want the kind of help that wont be sitting there telling me how violence is wrong and that I need to count to ten as I am getting my ass kicked. And I doubt that anyone else would want for the same.

SO I guess it’s just a consideration, that yes, whether we want to accept it or not, violence and especially violence committed by men against other men is socially acceptable. In fact we flock to it, pay for it and as a country drown in a miserable heap when Frenchmen do violence against Kiwi men on the rugby field. Violence has a place in our western world. The devil didn’t make us do it because the reality is we as a society have been doing it since the Olympics. War is the ultimate violence whereby we have condoned mechanized and industrialized our ability to commit violence on a global scale like never seen before. How efficently violent we have become.

White ribbon day says..It’s not OK to commit violence against women. And that’s true. Violence may well belong and be condoned on the rugby fields, in the boxing ring, and in the field of battle. But it is NOT Ok to commit violence in the home. It is never Ok to bring the battlefield into the home, or the boxing ring, or the rugby field. Violence may have its place..but its place is not with those we love the most.

The characters are Dally,Johnny, pony boy,a guy named Jerry,Darry and Randy. I thought that the author did a good job on the characters and setting although the old abandoned church would be better in a horror book but other than that she did a great job with the setting. I think that she did great job on making a story line because with the fire and them in the church to save the kids because it shows that even the people you least expect to save a life will do the unexpected so it shows a great deal of bravery. so though the author did a great job on those chapters

Violence: Big Ideas/Small Books (Paperback)
by Slavoj Zizek

“what is robbing a bank compared with the founding of a new bank?”, 04-12-2008 By John L Murphy “Fionnchú” (Los Angeles)

This “Big Ideas/Small Books” offering may repeat much of this Slovene philosopher’s earlier critiques. As it’s the first work I’ve read by him, I depend on others to verify this. My review seeks to explain what earlier reviewers have not paid as much attention to: the contents rather than the mood. Zizek certainly tackles big ideas in this brief paperback, so its portability and relative concision may recommend it to those who, like me, had heard of this provocateur but hesitated to enter his dense, diffuse, albeit often entertaining debates.

Zizek’s relevant: “The same philanthropists who give millions for AIDS or education in tolerance have ruined the lives of thousands through financial speculation and thus created the conditions for the rise of the very intolerance that is being fought.” (37) He compares their guise as “liberal communists” (think Bill Gates or George Soros) to a dirty postcard that shows, if moved slightly, “the obscene figure” who’s “at work beneath” the news of debt cancellation or the eradication of an epidemic. Global capitalists need to generate enormous wealth before they can distribute it to others. King Leopold and Andrew Carnegie– and I might add the Bonos and Brangelinas, perhaps (oddly, Zizek does not name such celebrity counterparts, whom free trade’s promoter Thomas Friedman labelled “super-empowered individuals” outside the nation-state or the “electronic herd” of corporate dominance)– have more in common with today’s Davos jetsetters and Hollywood trendsetters than we might have suspected.

On the surface, the “liberal communist” ten-point plan on pg. 18 sounds great; the “RED” campaign for Africa or wearing pink ribbons for breast cancer research or the Google slogan “do no evil” match these goals. So, what’s Zizek’s gripe with doing good while making a profit? Capitalism must thrive. This creates injustice.

The balance of wealth redistribution by dot.commers and rock stars may be cloaked in humanitarian liberties, but “it allows the capitalism system to postpone its crisis.” No Marxist, but schooled as a former Yugoslav subject and ex-Party member/dissident, Zizek notes that while such liberal largess avoids “the destructive logic of resentment and enforced statist distribution of wealth which can only end in generalised misery,” it also sidesteps the evils of concentrated affluence and power that keep the rich doling out handouts to the dependent poor.

As a Lacanian, what irritates Zizek? The gap between reality and the Real, the “inexorable ‘abstract,’ spectral logic of capital that determines what goes on in social reality.” (13) An economist may report how an impoverished Third World nation keeps “financially sound” even as the poverty’s apparent to any observer.

How do such criticisms of “liberal communism” fit into the book’s larger subject of violence? It’s a loose tailoring. Thematic stitches may not always be visible. He begins with defining three types of violence. First, there’s subjective violence: the kind we can identify “performed by a clearly identifiable agent.” (1) Behind this lurks a “symbolic” violence within language. It repeats the role that social domination plays in our habitual speech. For instance, “gold” when named as such means “we violently extract a metal from its natural texture, investing it with our dreams of wealth, power, spiritual purity, and so on, which have nothing to do with the immediate reality of gold.” (61)

Third comes “systemic” violence, the “often catastrophic consequences of the smooth functioning of our economic and political systems.” (2) The book in “six sideways glances” sidles around its impacts, allowing us to more dispassionately dissect the forms of violence, under critical control even as we peer towards its fearful emanations. The first section investigates the “trap” of “liberal communism” that I have already opened. The second looks into alienation as a solution rather than a problem to the Western need to assert “the right not to be harassed,” to keep one’s distance from others who may threaten us by their demands to be recognized and respected. (41) This chapter’s more difficult, but the gist of it– which I verified when I studied this very passage today on a crowded subway with my iPod plugged in– asserts the advantage of European civilization: “the alienation of social life.” (59) Rather than a failure, this opening up of a private zone in public allows us to obey rules mechanically, while insuring a proxemic space around us that preserves our inner world. This encourages peaceful coexistence in a multicultural realm.

Part Three confronts the eruption of violence, with the protests over the Danish caricatures of Muhammed and 2005’s French banlieu riots. The urge to tear down not the enemy’s camp, but to burn one’s own Parisian neighborhood (even a mosque), Zizek explains as a need for those demeaned to be noticed as citizens. This outburst also shows the impotence of such violence. True fundamentalists, such as Tibetan Buddhists or the Amish, he reminds us, foster indifference rather than insecurity towards the mores of non-believers. Those insecure, such as the Muslim mobs in Pakistan, only betray their desperate fragility, their own projected inferiority. Those complaining about Euro-American dominance, Zizek insists, nevertheless define their opposition as aligned against its hegemony. (Porto Alegre fails to oust Davos: the neo-liberals have no genuine alternative vision in a late-capitalist empire, either.) Religious fundamentalists who have gained the spotlight, he adds, situate themselves in the true source of challenge today: religion supplants science as “one of the possible places from which one can deploy critical doubts about today’s society.” (82) Science now solves our problems; religion stirs them up?

This chapter could have discussed further the limits of politically-correct “rules” when refusing to treat the uncomfortable truths it will not report for fear of inciting intolerance. Also, the vexed problems of massive immigration into the First World deserve more than an apercu or two. Still, Zizek provokes thought. He prefers to wander into (however astute or quirky) analogies to chocolate laxatives or Wagner.

In the fourth section, liberalism and fundamentalism both get castigated. Zizek reminds us that the European tradition always has mocked the divine; he finds such treatment “unimaginable in an Islamic culture.” (106) I suppose so from the well-known, recent evidence, but still I wondered if this was too broad a statement for the past fourteen centuries? He points out an often overlooked abuse of rhetoric: discussing the hyperbolic equivalence of Israeli policies towards Palestinian with the Nazis “strangely contradicts Holocaust denial” preached by many in the Arab and Muslim worlds. (110)

He also reminds us of the fate of those who dare to speak out against liberal pieties; Oriana Fallaci’s fall from leftist grace comes from her daring “to take the multiculturalist subservient ‘respect’ for the Muslim Other seriously.” She incites contempt for exposing the “assymetry” of allowing Eurabia to colonize the continent, while Europe constantly retreats, apologizes, and urges only more “respect” for a regressive, intolerant barbarism. She failed to perceive how “fake” Western tolerance can be; it’s “a sign of hidden and patronising racism.” (114-15) Again, Zizek tends to raise many topics deserving more than a paragraph or two, but that’s the tendency of his methods: to stir up our reactions.

This section’s also digressive, but the whole book’s so. It’s like hearing a fascinating but erratic professor. Zizek has elsewhere belittled teaching; he’s a professor who does not have to enter the classroom except when he wants, if at all. Yet, you get the sense of his restless range. I highlight what intrigued me; you may find an entirely different set of references that may rouse your enthusiasm. The book’s full of detours, sideways glances, and momentary asides.

Israel & Palestine kindle more sparks. Zizek’s at his best when urging a non-statist, truly sacred space for Jerusalem. He wonders at the U.S., the most religious of advanced nations, allying so strangely with the most atheist land (70% in some Israeli polls) which exists on the nature of its religious foundations! If Israel had been created two centuries ago, it’d have shared the roots of most “founder states;” its sin appears to be for the left that it was created after such imperial campaigns were delegitimized.

Skirting back to tolerance, Zizek as an atheist encourages us to remember how Europe’s contribution to progress rests in its freedom not to believe. Blasphemy only works in a religious space. If we give in to all those who protest, we risk strengthening the pact between fundamentalists and the PC-left: “a society immobilised by the concern for not hurting the other, no matter how cruel and superstitious this other is and in which individuals are engaged in regular rituals of ‘witnessing’ their victimisation.” (130) Botox injectors get equated with those forced to endure clitoridectomies by a too-capacious liberal tolerance granting a dimwitted approval to even oppressive cultures.

Instead, Zizek rallies for the courage to condemn religion if it indeed is truly entangled with hatred. We must fight religion if at its core we find violence. Apologists keep assuring us that we can rescue the truth of genuine faith from savage hijackers. Zizek inverts the game. Hack down the roots of violence. He dismisses cloaking its motives as if in a misused “authentic core” of a noble religion. The truest pacifists, he asserts, are those who lack belief. He wishes to advance atheism as a truly disinterested method to attain peace– free of the Big Other of Marxism, monotheism, or consumerism, for that soul-dispiriting matter.

Section five’s for me less engrossing. Yet, it has its moments. It covers “tolerance as an ideological category.” Zizek observes how the price of living in the free West means that we may suffer violence, torn from our cultural roots so as to survive in our multicultural West. Within this milieu, the greatest art endures after it has been wrenched– as with Homer or Shakespeare– from its original context.

Society pretends to allow us free choice, but we have no option, usually, but to profess love for our parents or our flag. We’re caught in a paradox of acting as if what’s prescribed is preferred, as if we had some say in the choice. Juxtapositions float by: a TV show “Nip/Tuck” and the ground-floor vs. first-floor labelling of buildings in the U.S. vs. abroad; “The Birds” and the shot of the plane hitting the Twin Tower; Bukharin & Stalin compared to the hapless heroines of Lars von Trier’s film trilogy. This portion left me somewhat at sea, but I kept paddling along.

In the last section, “Divine Violence,” G.K. Chesterton provides unexpected evidence for what Zizek proposes as a truly mature acceptance that there’s no larger supernatural rationale for our fate. Catastrophes occur, but God’s gone. He wonders if the Incarnation and Crucifixion represent a God who’s abandoned the transcendental to be truly and ultimately human. There’s no Ascension, no Easter in Zizek’s theology, therefore. God’s demolition of the protector, and His assumption of the mortal, stands for our own existential plight. There remains, nonetheless, Judgment Day. But, it’s delayed by the leftists. They promise that the “banks of rage” pent-up by so much injustice will bailout the oppressed. But, like the French or Soviet revolutions, the day of reckoning, and of utopian payback, gets postponed endlessly.

The epilogue reviews the main points. Three lessons earn summation: 1) When we shout down violence outright as “bad,” we participate in mystifying its less visible social forms. Our capitalist system furthers the violence that erupts, by the inherent unfairness of the economic rules we all must agree to play by. 2) Real violence can evade those who try to act out their outrage. Twice Brecht’s motto echoes: “What is the robbing of a bank compared to the founding of a bank?” 3) Subjective and systemic violence intertwine. Acts can be violent or not depending on context. I doubt if his immediate comparison to the Higgs field of quantum physics would be one that anyone else would supply for clarification! Still, Zizek stays on track: “the first gesture to provoke a change in the system is to withdraw activity, to do nothing.” (214)

What is there to be done? For one distrustful of Marx, of the state, of Kapital, not to mention God? Zizek concludes: “The threat today is not passivity, but pseudo-activity, the urge to ‘be active’, to ‘participate’, to mask the nothingness of what goes on.” The true challenge? To step back. Abstaining from the political game, refusing to shop to stimulate the economy that has tottered because of our overspending– I wonder what effect our concerted effort not to fuel capitalism, vote for oligarchies, or buy into credulity might achieve? Zizek’s discussion may not provide any answers, but his typically barbed appeals may cause us to reorient ourselves away from the structures imposed on us that appear like natural facts.

Last night was the launch event for this year’s White Ribbon Campaign, which is being coordinated by Kalanthe Khaiat and the rest of the Committee on Gender (COG). Unfortunately I missed it, but COG was gracious enough to forward the speech to everyone on the Facebook event. QFR has offered to host the speech on this website so that those who don’t have Facebook or were not invited to the event can still read and learn. The speaker, Michelle LaMarche, works at the Kingston Interval House, and this speech “[covers] a brief history of the White Ribbon Campaign and an overview of her work at Kingston Interval House within the broader context of women’s shelters in Canada” (from COG’s message). –Caleigh

Today, November 25th, marks the International Day for the Eradication of Violence against Women and the beginning of the annual White Ribbon Campaign in Canada. The campaign normally runs until December 6th – Canada’s National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women – also known as the anniversary, this year the 20th, of the Montreal Massacre – where 14 young women at L’Ecole Polytechnique were shot down and killed because they were women. In fact, the gunman walked into a classroom, separated the men from the women, called the women “feminists” and proceeded to shoot and kill them all. This day was an extremely unfortunate awakening for many Canadians and others around the world to the extent of violence against women in our society and how this violence is inextricably linked to gender inequality.

Violence against women is a persistent and universal problem occurring in every culture and social group. Around the world, at least one in every three women has been beaten, coerced into sex, or otherwise abused in her lifetime – most often by someone she knows, including a member of her own family, an employer or a co-worker.

The White Ribbon campaign itself is generally organized by men working to end men’s violence against women, we at Kingston Interval House do not organize White Ribbon campaigns, but encourage men in our community to do so. Thank you to the Committee on Gender at Queen’s for taking up the task this year to raise awareness about violence against women on campus. We support your work.

Kingston Interval House is one of the oldest operating safe shelters for women and children escaping abuse and violence in Canada. The initial idea for a refuge for abused women and children came from Kingston’s Women’s Centre, with the support of a provincial court judge, social service agencies, family court workers and taxi drivers.

Since opening in December 1975, we have changed locations five times as the need for increased space or various reasons of house unsuitability arose.

In July of 2004, our current location was completed, accommodating up to 30 women and children, though we are only funded for 25.

Along with room and board for those in the shelter we offer non-judgmental counselling and support from a feminist perspective. Women are able to access information, referrals, Court and other agency accompaniment, advocacy, help filling out forms, and safety planning.

We present options and empower women to make own choices. Specialized services for children in the shelter focus on the specific needs of individual children and can include after school support, counseling and play therapy. Child & Youth workers provide opportunities for mothers to empower themselves and improve relationships within their families. We also operate a 24 hour crisis and support phone answered by trained counselors working in shelter. Women can call for access to shelter, referrals and information, and a listening ear.

Other services for women and children include:

Access to two hours of free legal advice – an income tested program.

Quick access to funds such as:

Danielle Duscheneau fund – for safety issues- replace broken doors and windows (door locks, repairs to windows, locks on windows, etc.), legal, transportation to court and appointments, transportation to leave community for safety reasons

Queen’s Women’s Centre Transition Fund – funds for women leaving the shelter who need help with start-up and moving costs

Community Counselling – individual counseling for women in the community – in either English or French, who wish to establish violence free lives – these women can be in an abusive relationship, left yesterday or left 50 years ago – if they feel the need for support – we are there for them.

Children who have been exposed to domestic violence – individual and group counselling

Aboriginal and Rural Outreach program – culturally specific individual and group counselling

All of our services are confidential and free of charge.

In 2007/08 we housed 84 children and 209 women, with a 102% occupancy rate. This past year we housed 65 children and 193 women in the emergency shelter, operating over-capacity again at 106%.

So, although we actually shelter less women and children, we are over-capacity more often than last year. How could this be, you might ask? The answer lies within a larger community context. As most of you already know, Kingston, along with the majority of communities in this province, is in an affordable housing crisis. There simply isn’t enough affordable, and safe, places for women and children to live in our community – and unfortunately, there has not been a lot of action on the part of government – provincial or federal – to remedy this situation.

For years, like in most shelters across the country, women stayed at Kingston Interval House on average 1 and ½ months, and 6 weeks is still our official “target” when women and their children arrive. However, the reality is very different – each year, women and their children are forced to stay longer and longer periods in the shelter – with the average resident currently staying between 6 – 9 months – a far cry from the intended temporary emergency shelter stay!

It is our hope that our new project, 2nd stage housing, will help to fill this very large gap for women and children leaving violence in our community. Transitional housing operated by Kingston Interval House but in an entirely different location than the shelter will consist of 19 apartments for women and children leaving the shelter and transitioning to the community. Families and individuals will be able to stay for up to one year.

Estimated to be open in June 2010, this housing project will offer counselling, advocacy and peer support, in a safe and welcoming environment. Apartment units will be affordable, with rents geared to women’s incomes. The building will be able to accommodate women and their children who are ready to leave the emergency shelter but not able to find suitable housing, thus freeing up space for even more women and children needing emergency safe shelter.

When we first opened our doors in 1975 there were very few shelters in the country. By 1986, there were 235 women’s shelters across Canada. In 2008, there were 569 shelters. Most of these shelters, not unlike Kingston Interval House, are usually full and maintain waiting lists – something ghastly wrong for emergency services! In fact, last year 172 women and 124 children were unable to stay in the shelter because we were full.

Brian Vallee, a journalist and author of Life with Billy and The War on Women, points out that a “surprising – and unintended – consequence of the burgeoning number of shelters in the U.S. was a 70% drop in the number of men killed by their (usually abused) spouses, ex-spouses, or girlfriends since 1976.” Having given some women the means to escape has actually saved men’s lives! However, the drop in the rate of women killed by their male intimate partners was not nearly as dramatic – less than 25% in fact. The decline in male deaths was about the same in Canada, but the rate in which women continue to be killed has not declined.

Here are some important and revealing stats:

77% of 368 women surveyed in ten shelters across Canada in 2006 were at “extreme” or “severe” risk of being killed by their intimate partners.

Of these women:

65% had been stalked

55% had been threatened with death

50% had suffered choking incidents

49% had been forced to have sex

39% had been threatened with a weapon or had a weapon used against them

And 25% had been beaten while pregnant.

These statistics do not surprise those of us who work in the anti-violence field. We know, through official government statistics, research studies and most importantly through our own experiences listening to women’s stories, anecdotally that the majority of women we see in the shelters are in extreme risk. We know that women are more vulnerable to abuse when pregnant, and that abuse often starts during pregnancy. We know that the physical abuse that pregnant women experience is often directed at their stomach and their uterus. We know that most women killed by their intimate partners are killed after separation – often within the first 3 months – we recognize this as the most dangerous time for women leaving abuse.

We listen to stories of women who are killed and how the system failed to protect them – and thus we understand why women stay in these relationships – based on a real fear, and why they return, time and time again. If it isn’t for their own immediate safety or that of their children or other family members, it is because the systems we have in place are not adequate to support them to live violence free lives.

Inadequate, unaffordable and unsafe housing; drastically reduced spending on social services and social safety nets, lack of affordable and universal child care; lack of real access to education; ridiculous and unlivable social assistance rates; and the resulting poverty that women and children are forced to live in as a result.

We understand how the child poverty rate is inextricably linked to violence against women and women’s ability to continue to live violence free lives. Women need to clothe, shelter and feed their children – and sometimes living with an abuser is the only way they can see to do that.

Thus, violence against women isn’t going to end in our society until we work to eradicate inequality and oppression. The work we do is important, we need to provide shelter and service to women and children – but we also know it isn’t enough – and we implore you to join us to work towards the ultimate eradication of the systemic barriers that keep women and children as victims.

Lastly, we also recognize that violence against women should not be viewed as a “woman’s concern”. It is both a cause and consequence of gender perceptions and affects all members of society negatively. That is why it is important for men to speak out against male violence against women – thank you to the White Ribbon campaign for encouraging this.

–

I encourage you to stop by Mac-Corry between 1 and 2pm tomorrow or any day next week to pick up a white ribbon for yourself and support this campaign to end male violence against women. Thanks to Committee on Gender for organizing this year’s campaign. –Caleigh

There’s stuff everywhere. Stuff that is a cruel joke: The 5th International! has been declared

There’s stuff everywhere.

Stuff that is a cruel joke:

The 5th International! has been declared at long last by…Hugo Chavez. This will unite the forces of revolutionary socialism world-wide. In Chavez’s view, of course, the forces of revolutionary socialism include…Mugabe. And Ahmadinejad. And the Chinese Communist Party. And…wait, what?

Thing is, I could sort of understand these sort of vile endorsements before – though I’m not too motivated to insist on a charitable reading of Chavez’s words, such a reading was available: he’s kissing ass because he wants/needs international allies. He wants a bit more security against threats from the US and its allies. It’s not what you’d expect of an ‘internationalist’ in the genuine sense but then, why would we expect such things from Chavez? The point is, it’s entirely standard and expected from a government. It’s exactly what every other government does.

But actually proclaiming a Socialist International, and then sending your people to receive ideological training in China, is…well, a cruel joke.

Stuff that is also a cruel joke:

Pardoning turkeys. So there’s a special day on which millions of turkeys are to be killed and ritually eaten. You get one or two of these turkeys and, with great publicity, and great fanfare, decline to kill them. This provokes hearty laughter. After all, you can’t spell slaughter, without laughter!

Stuff that is hardly even funny anymore:

In Nepal, there has been a grand religious festival of death, in which a few hundred thousand animals of various sorts have been killed by pious God-fearing folks from all over the country and beyond.

Quote: “I slaughtered around 20 buffalo in 2004. This time I managed to behead about 70. I wish the sacrifice has not ended.”

And: “I do it for spiritual satisfaction.”

Note: roughly the same number of animals have been slaughtered in the world for food since you started reading this post. With the precision of ‘roughly’ tied to how fast a reader you are.

Question: is it more disturbing that people do this sort of thing for spiritual satisfaction, or that they do it with complete casual indifference?

More Cruel Jokes:

You remember the world’s biggest war? Yeah, still going on. Currently some people are expressing concern that the peace-keepers are actually keeping war, and troops sent to protect civilians are actually protecting people who are massacring civilians. The Congolese government has said “That’s really what we can call an exaggeration”. Well then. Thanks for that.

In fact, it looks suspiciously like the actual international response is largely a series of actions to prop up and support the government, and take no action against the companies funding violence for resource access, surrounded by high-pitched humanitarian trills and whistles.

And Thanksgiving, which itself is a somewhat cruel joke. We exterminated you, but there was a brief period of amiability early on! Let’s celebrate that!

What lesson can we draw from all this? From the jovial celebrations, ironic mercy, grand revolutionary pronouncements, grand humanitarian pronouncements, and perhaps most of all from the ’spiritual satisfaction’ – what they seem to illustrate is that humans have a striking ability to take violence and cruelty and destruction and give it pretty much every positive emotional spin you can think of.

When we switch on the television to make our kids sit in a place and watch the channels they want,ha

When we switch on the television to make our kids sit in a place and watch the channels they want, have we ever thought of what actually they are seeing. Starting from tom & jerry to power rangers which the child loves to watch is almost filled with violence. When jerry hits tom with a hammer or bangs his head with an axe,we can see our child enjoying it with full of laughter. In case of chota beem and hanuman ,we can see that the boy can hit anybody with so much power proving his strength. Talking about power rangers and other toons mostly they keep fighting among them and we can see our child doing the same actions. We can’t just ignore it in the name of entertainment as 90% of it contains nothing but violence.

The worst case is the Tamil cartoon channel. Here they translate the English toons to Chennai Tamil which is really horrible to hear. The dialogues are modulated and spoken like vadivelu’s (Tamil comedian) and the child character’s in the cartoon speaks the same slang and words. In return we can hear our children speaking the same words with their friends and us. Some cartoons have stories which says about first crush(at the age of 6) or a boy worrying about (age 5) his girl friend talking to another boy in his class. They also use certain sentences like “you keep quiet mom or just get out or dad doesnt know anything or do not disturb me” which can be easily grasped by our children which they will use it to the elders. Western culture has already come into our society but it won’t be nice to see a child talking about girlfriend and crush at such an early age which will reflect bad parenting. We do have cartoon channels from BBC where they show good cartoons and also art and craft are taught to kids. Many programs are very useful for the kids providing lots of information. Just help the child by guiding them to get what actually they need and help them in building interests in various things other than fight & violence.

Coming to the reality shows for kids(dancing and singing), parents let their child to dance for any kind of third rated songs with sexy movements. Just for name and fame the kid will be singing a song without knowing its full meaning which will be actually above its age. If a child gets eliminated then the camera will be focusing on the child’s eyes. . Even if the child doesn’t cry the parent’s will be in tears. If you lose you need to cry. This is what they teach you. In our country we do not have anything called Child Cinema. At least there can be a censor board for media where they can decide what kind of cartoons can be shown for kids.

The biggest censor are the PARENTS who need to have control over the television giving them the right thing because “PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE” …

In Washington, there is no crime of domestic violence. Instead, domestic violence is a tag that is placed in other crimes which indicates that there is a kinship and family among stakeholders. Most jurisdictions impose order n. Contact prohibiting the defendant in a domestic violence ( "DV") case from having contact with the alleged victim of the offense. The order often prohibit contact with children of the victim, residence and workplace as well.

Family or domestic relationship

According to RCW 10.99.020 (3), family or household member is defined as:

[S] lice, former spouses, persons who have a child in common regardless of whether they were married or lived together at any time, adult persons related by blood or marriage, adults who are currently living together or have resided together in the past, years of persons sixteen years or older who arecurrently living together or have resided together in the past and who have or have had an affair, years persons sixteen years or older with whom a person sixteen years or older has or has had a romantic relationship, and people who have a biological or legal parent-child relationship, including stepparents and stepchildren and grandparents and grandchildren.

As you can see, this definition is extremely broad. It is much more inclusive so that more peoplewait for it either. The same applies to the types of crimes that are classified as "domestic violence." Many people think of assault in domestic violence cases, but there are so many offenses that can carry the tag DV.

Mandatory arrest

According to RCW 10.31.100 (2) (c), the agent must make an arrest if the person is sixteen years or more and four hours earlier, had assaulted a family or household member inRCW 10.99.020 and the officer believes that:

(i) A felonious assault has occurred;

(ii) there was an assault causing bodily harm to the victim if the injury is observable by the controller to respond or not, or

(iii) that any physical action took place which was intended to cause another person reasonably to fear imminent serious bodily injury or death. Injury means physical pain, illness or a deteriorating physical condition. When the officerprobable cause to believe that the family or household members have assaulted another officer is not obliged to stop two people. The officer must arrest the person that the officer believes to be the primary physical aggressor. In taking this decision, the officer must make every reasonable effort to consider:

(i) intended to protect victims of domestic violence in RCW 10.99.010;

(ii) the comparative extent of injuries inflicted or serious threatscreating fear of physical injury and

(iii) a history of violence between the persons involved.

If you are arrested for a crime involving domestic violence, order no contact in position to hit almost immediately.

No Contact Order

There are two types of n. Contact Orders in Washington State: Pre-Trial and after conviction. Both types of decisions to prevent the defendant from having contact with the alleged victim. However, nor in preventing the victim to try to have contact with the accused, since only the defendant goes to jail if the order is not respected. In other words, no limit orders only contact behavior of the defendant.

Pre-Trial

Pre-trial orders are issued against the defendant (sometimes called resistance) before he or she is convinced he did nothing wrong. These orders can prevent contact between the accused and the victim's alleged crime, the victimchildren (even if the respondent is too young), place of residence of the victim and the work of the victim (even if the respondent is at home too).

In other words, these orders can not force you away from your house and your children even before they have been convicted of a crime. This is true even if the victim said that nothing happened and everything that happened was all blown out of proportion.

Preliminary orders remain in place until there is a resolution of the criminal caseor until a judge lifts.

Post-Conviction

An Ordinance No contact was released after the conviction could bring the same type of restrictions that pre-trial order does. Post-conviction orders are usually good for one year, but a judge in May to extend this if he or she considers that the facts warrant.

Civil standby

Since a No Contact Order can go home, courts generally allow a home to travel to get some clothes and personalobjects. However, you must be accompanied by a police officer. This process is called "civil standby." You should contact the agency law enforcement and arrange a time to wait for the calendar year. Be aware, however, it is an intervention in a low priority for authorities above the law, so that the civil standby only be done when they have time to lose.

No violation of a contact order

An intentional violation of a No Contact Order is a serious offense, whichmeans you can earn up to one year in prison and fined $ 5,000. Contravene a domestic violence n. To contact the label is itself a crime of domestic violence, rights of ownership or possession of firearms will be held on the conviction – but no weapons were used, possessed, cited or otherwise used or planned . This is true even when the criminal case underlying causing the No contact order must be vacated and dismissed.

Being in a public place, eventhe courthouse is not a defense to violating the order. This means that if an order is issued against you and you see the protected person in a store, then you must leave. Contact accidental May not technically violate the order, but you can also go before a judge to defend himself. Besides the stress, you may need to spend more to hire a lawyer.

Even if the victim requests contact, the defendant can face jail if the order isviolated. What I see most often in my case, is the following scenario:

Two people have a relationship. Something happens and the police are called. Due to the sensitivity of all for "domestic violence" err on the side of the burden of policing someone. A No Contact Order then slap up, cut two people from having any contact with another. You can do one of them suddenly homeless – but that's another matter. People, people, youto work the problem and contact the alleged victim, the accused and said something to the effect "I am sorry that all this happens. go home and I'll help." The problem, of course, is that the defendant took the alleged victim on offer. Generally, legal problems are multiplying for the defendant, shortly after, as the happy couple will celebrate their rekindled relationship only to take a "slow and go" at a stop sign – or someother minor violations of traffic. They were then arrested by police. When the agent goes to the occupants until skips n order to contact, and the accused was arrested and taken to jail where he is now facing an additional cost.

Delete order

It is very difficult to remove a preliminary no contact order, once he is right. Even if the victim comes and testifies in court that the order is not required, most judges will ordertowards.

One strategy is to have the defendant evaluated by a Domestic Violence Treatment Agency. If an advisor is ready to tell the court that the defendant was not a danger to the victim if the order is withdrawn, the court may delete command. Agency treatment may be useful to have the defendant in the class before agreeing to make a recommendation to the judge.

Another strategy is to ask the court to amend Ordinance No. C0ontact to allow marriagecounseling. Some courts require that the contact is allowed while a third followed by treatment agency.

Once No Contact Order has been amended to allow contact with relief, the court is more likely that the order to remove later, unless there is a new problem.

Victims' Rights

Most offices of prosecutors' will counsel against domestic violence. Task E "of that person to help the victim of a crime of domestic violence to understandWhat services are available to them and keeps you informed as it moves along the justice process.

I have seen many cases where the victim does not want the No contact order to be effective. Turning to the injured person's lawyer can sometimes be useful.

Most courts have a form you can fill the request of the victim alleged that the decline of the National Journal Order contact information. In my experience, most judges to maintain order, even after the victim asked to drop it. Sameif the order remains in force, claiming that the victim is removed is still valid, as it may be useful in a subsequent attempt to cancel the order.

Gun Rights

Conviction for an offense of domestic violence label you will lose the right to ownership or possession of firearms. This is a permanent ban.

Example

In one case I had, the husband was arrested on a charge of domestic violence when, during a fight, threwa bowl in their kitchen sink, to break. The case was heard by a close neighbor who called police. The police arrived and when she looked in the sink, they found the chipped bowl and arrested her husband for the ill, domestic violence malicious. There was no allegation that her husband threw a bowl at, or near, his wife. Since Washington is a property of the State of the Community, the husband and wife had a property right in the bowl, then from his chippingbowl, the husband has damaged property belonging to another (his wife) and is therefore liable under malicious. Without counsel, the husband (who had no criminal record), pleaded guilty to contestation. Had one years n. To contact, which prevented him from going home for a year or having any contact with his wife.

The husband had contacted a lawyer before pleading guilty, he would not have a conviction at all. Even if there was a conviction, a lawyerwould have avoided a long no contact order.
