Myself, Ener Hax, Dream Walker, and Nickola Martynov have been working on our new four sim grid host

Myself, Ener Hax, Dream Walker, and Nickola Martynov have been working on our new four sim grid hosted by Reaction Grid. We are creating all the furnishings you will need to hold productive meetings in a virtual world. With the cost of Reaction Grid being far more reasonable, we expect to help people set up their own grids and be effective quickly.

That means not just getting you a grid, but loading up landscaped terrain complete with buildings built using the best virtual world practices*. Also included is copyable furniture and even avatar shapes, skins, and clothing.

But wait! There’s more . . . oops, no extra ShamWOWs (you know they’re made in Germany) . . .

You also get video tutorials to help you be efficient right from the start - whether for business meetings or eLearning use. This is the value of the team we have in place.

All have three years experience in Second Life as teachers, mentors, builders, and scripters. Ener and I have done several large projects in Second Life (and Ener manages the 12 sim iliveisl estate), Nickola has been awarded land for wonderful builds for the sixth birthday celebration of Second Life as well as this year’s Burning Life. Dream Walker has run her own sthop selling items she scripts herself (and she can script almost anything and does so for the iliveisl estate – plus she has event experience with security and anti-griefing practices).

More information will be out soon. Meanwhile, we are building chairs, laptops, lamps, holodecks, windmills, solar panels, . . .

Level 2 Venue

*best practices include tall ceilings, easy places to take off from and land, careful use of textures to reduce lag, land divided up for effective use of media streams, making sure breakout rooms have 20 metres separation for chat, and so on

The Reaction Grid team is very small but amazingly passionate and talented. The cost for Reaction Gr

The Reaction Grid team is very small but amazingly passionate and talented. The cost for Reaction Grid is about 7% that of Second Life. I can attest to that first hand. I have 12 sims in Second Life and have been in Second Life for three years.

In Reaction Grid, I have 4 sims and since it is my grid, I can do far more than I can in Second Life. Last month people would state to me “but it’s not Second Life” and I would be somewhat defensive and list that it did have pluses that Second Life did not. Like 45,000 prims to a sim and the ability to make up to 256 metre prims.

Now, after a month in Reaction Grid, I answer the statement “but it’s not Second Life” with a thank God and Yes! There are so many good things about Reaction Grid. It is what Second Life promised to be years ago. But Linden Lab has grown, Philip is off on a new venture, and it has simply changed. It’s too bad. I was a huge evangelist for them. Spending my own money to speak at conferences, creating video tutorials showcasing Second Life, but no more.

The team at Reaction Grid are wonderful and passionate. And caring.

Here is one reason reaction Grid costs less – it is simply architected better. Read what Microsoft has to say about them here.

Yes! I clearly have a addiction with designing converse right now and I suppose it is not fading away anytime soon. Base on by the amount of releases you can tell that I have been fairly busy with creating more shoes because no one can get enough of them. Most of customers may recognize the Melaskulls converse however these are recolors so now there are more options to choose from. Of course why not make some Twilight converse while I am at it! I hope you twilight fans especially enjoy those. ^^ The other releases are the pastel set and party time set. That is all for now…

Also a special items at the counter:

(17.-21. November 2009)

Per il progetto Comenius „Wishes and Visions“ scolari e insegnanti austriaci e italiani erano invitati dai loro partner ollandesi. (17 – 21 novembre 2009)

„We wished to have a school like this!“
“This” is Haag’s Montessori Lyceum, were we were guests during our first Comenius meeting.
As you can read in other articles in this blog, two schools from Vienna, one school from Vittoria / Sicily and the Haag’s Montessori school / Holland, are partners for the Wishes and Visions Comenius project 2009, 2010, 2011.

28 Teachers and pupils (architects of Activeworlds) met our Dutch hosts in their modern and inviting school. We all were deeply impressed form the friendly atmosphere, respectful and appreciating acquaintance between teachers and pupils and most of all from the way of teaching and learning with Montessori methods.

For three days we have been working togetheron the project in different teams: Architects and teachers. Ex-pupils from the HMS supported the architects working with the Activeworlds computer program. We teachers analyzed the work done in this project during the last school year (eTwinning) and planned the next steps with regards to content and didactics.
The two Viennese schools are both eLSA and voXmi schools, so we tried to enforce the focus on ICT (working with Moodle and Liveonline ) and multilingual communication and education.

We also had the possibility to visit Madurodam, Schreveningen and/ or Amsterdam.
One afternoon and evening our pupils were invited and friendly received by Dutch families.

Piet and Sasha, who organized the meeting, surprised us with a wonderful event the last evening: An Indonesian candlelight-dinner for all the participating kids and teachers in the hall of the school. A band of young Dutch musicians (12,13,14 years old), all pupils of Haag`Montessory Lyceum, gave an impressing concert.

I think, the most important things we all, pupils and teachers learnt during this meeting:

Foreign languages help a lot to make communication easier.

We don’t communicate with cultures but with individuals.

We have to understand ourselves to be able to understand the others.

If you are patient and if you are able and willing to listen you learn a lot from each of the partners.

If we work on the similarities we are able to benefit from the differences.

Our pupils need another kind of school…

And it was the first time I really could see and understand Montessori teaching for each age of pupils: Help me to do it myself. (And it’s not only the kids who have this claim, but each of us… lifelong)

Hey guys this is Jimbercane posting. First off all, I would like to wish everyone of you, Happy Thanksgiving! Traditionally, in this time of year, it is the time to give thanks for the harvest and gratitude in general. Anyways, let move on with some updates. First off all, there is a new Action, and it’s called Dance. Since this Action has been added, the organization of all of the other rest has also been modifyied to fit them all in. I think this format will be perfect, because in the future when some other Actions are added, there will be room for them all.

Welcome to yet another day on planet earth. I don’t experience much of planet earth lately as

Welcome to yet another day on planet earth. I don’t experience much of planet earth lately as I am in the virtual world. I experience lots of online people and online content; I am in another world most of the time. It is very strange because people who spend so much time on the internet actually have a totally different experience to those who only go on a computer every so often to check their email. I am lucky because I have the whole world in front of me.

I love the internet because when I sit in front of a computer, I sit in front of the entire world. I have access to everyone and everything which is awesome. I find the real world to be very restricting if you not a millionaire, so I enjoy the virtual world. The virtual world to me is wonderful because I feel very free and almost super human. I am not restricted by superficial elements like appearances and material items.

The internet to me is really special and I honestly can tell you that I don’t think I would be able to survive without it. I am thinking of getting myself an uncapped connection at home, where I can download things all the time, I love downloading stuff. I even download books to read and information, which enhances my knowledge and awareness of the world.

I will leave you with these honest thoughts, as I continue my day in the vast and exciting cyberspace. I wish that everybody gets to experience this wonderful world, the way that I do, because I promise you that it is a wonderful place to be. The real world is a boring place, but the virtual world is so exiciting.Have a good day everyone.

Hey Cazmos, I just wanted to tell you all how happy I would be if I won the house contest! Well firs

Hey Cazmos,

I just wanted to tell you all how happy I would be if I won the house contest! Well first of all, starting now I am saving up Cazmo Cash. All Cazmo Cash that is not used on updating my house will go to the winner of a contest I will make. My family isn’t doing good on money at all this year, and I think it’d be awesome to have a Nintendo Wii. Unforunately my family can’t afford one at the moment, but Cazmo is cool enough give one away for free!! Anyways, I’m starting to save up my cash, and I will give all my extra cash away to one lucky person at a contest! The contest will just be a party at my house, and we will be doing events there. Whoever wins the most gets the cc. Oh, and just so you know: This is pure BRIBERY. So yes, jump with joy because I never do bribery, except for right now! I hope you all vote my house 5 stars, and tell your friends about it!! If you vote my house 5 stars and tell me about it on Cazmo, I’ll go and rate your house 5 stars too! It’s a win/win situation! Thanks a lot for everything, you guys rock and I can’t imagine what I’d do without you guys.

Have a nice day,

I will be either reverting the css back to my usual theme or a winter theme (comment your opinion!) I will also update all of the pages and my header etc. Also Cazmo has announced that they will be giving away prizes to the top house owners! Ok so here’s the deal- if I win a prize for having one of the top houses I will give away atleast 100 cazmo cash!!! If my house is #1 in any of the categories I will give away atleast 500 cazmo cash!!! I will not give out anymore deals on the contest but I highly recommend you rate my house 5 stars (internal and external) on all of your accounts and tell your friends!!!

Today is the last day of school, last lecture and last tutorial for NCT. When i was first introduced

Today is the last day of school, last lecture and last tutorial for NCT.

When i was first introduced to this module, i fear it alot.
Being a tech-moron, i honestly hated using social media tools.
I have an inactive facebook account
0 blog
0 twitter account

However, being under such circumstances, i was left with no choice but to learn to pick up using twitter, facebook and blogging.

The whole of 6 weeks i have seen myself transforming from a tech-moron to at least a bit more tech savvy. Honestly, i am quite proud of myself!

From that, i have learnt something and that is when you stop believing in something, that’s when you stop learning. I am glad i did.

NCT has really taught me alot.

I used to think that internet is pretty safe as my identity is anonymous and whatever i am doing is just behind a screen away from the virtual world.

NCT has brought me to shame. I was so wrong.

Privacy matters:
The internet is actually very dangerous for all your information and data could be easily found. The simplest way is to google your name and everything about you will be revealed out, publicly. Not to mention things that you have locked in private, the ‘big boys’-google still has access to it. My point is, nothing is safe in the cyber world anymore. Therefore, do not write or talk about anything which you deem highly confidential online.

I also used to think that internet usage is for geeks and that not knowing what’s the lastest trends online or how to use a specific social media tool doesn’t matter so much.

NCT proved me wrong, again.

What you know today might be obsolete tomorrow:
The online world is now a bustling reflection of the real world. Whatever you can do in real life can now also be done in the virtual world.

online journalism in games= secondlife
online sale of clothes, accessories, bags = blogshop
watch videos, ads, movies online= youtube
mass sharing of information online= twitter

and the list goes on….

There is so much you can do online nowadays. It is no longer a platform just for entertainment purposes. Whatever can be done in reality can also be done in the virtual world.

Technology never stops, in fact, it is always improving and evolving into something better.

I must say, if one doesn’t catch up with technology, technology doesn’t lose, its you.

These 2 pieces of information has now changed my perception at how i look at technology.

Last words: Never ever belittle the power of technology.

Hey guys this is Jimbercane posting. I was on Twitter, and noticed that Planet Cazmo updated theirs. They mentioned, that the winner of the best rated room contest will also win a Nintendo Wii! Plus they also mentioned, that there will be other contests from which you will be able to win Astroyboy (For the Nintendo DS.) and Ben 10! I am still not sure what the Ben 10 prize will be, because there are even toys based on this series. Also, the days seem to be getting shorter now… Just when I was making this post, I looked outside, and noticed that it was already dark! It was only 4 o’ clock when this happened! I hope snow will be coming soon! Everyone seems to be saying that it’s cold outside, but in my point of view I don’t really feel that cold. Anyways, that’s all for now.

Fashion Research Institute has been working in virtual worlds for the past few years, exploring them as platforms and tools for use by the $1.7 trillion apparel industry. We have since developed a design application, Black Dress Design Studio, which is currently in closed alpha. Black Dress shows promise of being a disruptive technology for the industry, as well as a game changer for the way product is developed in both apparel and in the much larger soft consumer goods industries.

As we worked in the virtual world space, our understanding of both the potential power and range of the platform, and our understanding of how to educate fashion designers using virtual world platforms grew and changed. We knew that understanding how people learn is as critical to our success in bringing our application to market as making sure the application is ‘right’. With that understanding as a basis, we launched a series of educational programs, which currently include our Shengri La Marketplace program and our student internships.

Both of these programs focus on educating designers and helping them achieve their dreams. There are critical differences: the Marketplace program is intended to help designers of virtual goods, or ‘virtua’, develop their label in these virtual spaces. These designers have varying educational backgrounds and they have a burning desire to create within virtual worlds. Their product is not intended to ever be manufactured in the industrial complex, nor will it be sold through usual apparel industry retail channels. This product is sold to the users of avatars for some of the same reasons we buy real life apparel – we want to customize our appearance in a way that sends a message to people who see us. Obviously in a virtual world we don’t need to be concerned about fit or function, nor on manufacturability, which can be very freeing for the creative spirit. The Marketplace program has a rolling admission deadline.

The internship program, in contrast, is designed to teach fashion student designers how to go through the process of developing a collection from original concept to final runway show. Using virtual worlds as the platform, we take our interns through a fast-paced development sequence where they learn about both the art and business of design and development.

Our internships run about sixteen weeks. In that time the interns are expected to develop marketing concepts for their label, which include logo, showroom, storefront, customer service policies, packaging, and an overall look and feel for their line. They use these concepts to present their actual collection to the virtual goods marketplace in Second Life. The interns are expected to create all components of a collection during their internship – we have them create a mood board, color stories, and materials story, which we keep displayed in their workspace for reference.

The interns are taught to develop product using the in-world content creation tools. We maintain presence on several grids, and we usually have them prototype their designs on one of our OpenSim grids because there is no cost for developing on our grids. When they are ready to develop for the marketplace, they develop their product on the Second life platform, package up their outfits, and place them in vendors. They receive immediate feedback – either their outfits sell, or they don’t!
Our interns are expected to complete one look a week from their original sketches, developed in 3-6 colorways. Our goal is to help the interns produce a visual ’story’ for their portfolio that shows they understand how the product development cycle works in the real life apparel industry. Using these low risk platforms enables us to take our interns through the process at a nominal cost. They are encouraged to explore the full parameter space of their own creativity.

Our final project with our interns is to help them produce a full virtual runway show with live models presenting their designs to a general audience. These shows are group shows where the interns collaborate to define their theme, name the show and determine the run order for the models. The interns are all individually responsible for styling their models and determining makeup, hair, and accessories to complete the look. They must also select pre-determined poses for their models to strike at the end of the runway.

FRI has a team of dedicated volunteer models who generously offer their time for fittings and the show. They also provide needed moral support and encouragement. The FRI team builds the runway and make sure that all of the models are correctly styled. We also manage the overall show including media and marketing. In addition, we have an audience of supporters who are gracious enough to come to the shows and demonstrate their support of our student designers by blogging about their work, buying their work, and simply being present and giving these new talents a bit of an ego boost.

At the end of the runway show, our interns have a chance to be recognized for all of their hard work by taking a bow on the runway. They depart with valuable experience in the real life development process. We stop short of pulling physical samples but the design cycle is the same and when the time comes for them to enter the work force, they will recognize the design process because they have already been through it. The educational process is fast-paced and demanding, and we set very high standards for them to reach.

Virtual Goods Marketplace Trends

We’re particularly excited to be working with our student interns from Buffalo State university because we think the virtual goods marketplace will burgeon rapidly. In 2007, virtual goods accounted for $2.6 billion in sales. Although the total value of virtual goods pales in comparison to the $1.7 trillion apparel industry, this market compares very favorably with the accessories market which generates about $1.8 billion in sales. Various analyst reports indicate that the virtual goods marketplace is set to double in 2010. Fashion designers are often encouraged to move into handbags and other accessories to add a new revenue stream and enable brand extension. With virtual goods slated to open up further in 2010, designers should definitely consider this new niche market they can readily move into which can help them generate more sales in a completely new area.

Not only is there a business case to be made for providing design for this niche, but designers can also use the low-risk OpenSim platform to explore new design ideas, and to show their work 24/7 on special runways, where models can walk the catwalk at a touch of the button and show off designs as they are meant to be: in 3D and moving.

Virtual/Real Runway 3.0 Project

We are very excited to be working with the talented students designers from Buffalo State University, and we’re very much looking forward to our Spring work with them. Working virtually, we will be helping them develop the exact same looks to present on our virtual runways as they will be showing in real life in their graduating senior runway show, ‘Runway 3.0′. Our work with them will extend even outside of our virtual space. We’ll be taking a day to tour them through the fashion district in New York City, the home of fashion. And finally, we’ll be working with them as technical fashion designers to help them create real world apparel with a decided technical bent: we’re going to help them add motors, lights, and more!

Virtual Intern Applications Being Accepted

We’re accepting new applications for our next internship cycle from Fashion Programs, which begins at the end of January. Admission is highly selective. For more information, please visit www.fashionresearchinstitute.com

Ikea-wannabe chair designer Ener Hax was hoping to get Dream Walker to script some chairs but timing is everything (read: I should have gone to bed and not logged into the Level 2 Venue grid). =p

Sit scripts are basic scripts to use, but can be a pain to set up when placing in prims that have been cut, hollowed, rotated, spindled, or mutilated (showing my age and the old, old days of computer punch cards! and what is spindling anyway?)

Ener has been making a great collection of chairs for our new endeavor on our very own OpenSim grid hosted by Reaction Grid.

The goal is to create all the furniture needed for making “filming sets” for use in creating video for eLearning scenarios and video podcasts, and also furniture for use in corporate meetings and hotel events. Including details that help raise environmental awareness for meetings in the real world are part of everything we are building (Ener points out the “we” part of this sentence). =D

Apart from my love of eLearning, I taught college Environmental Science for 7 years and we have Matt Courtland from The Natural Strategy consulting with us for “best green practices” in meetings and events (see one of his blog posts on the greening of hotels).

Now for the LSL sit script, hopefully it helps, especially with rotation.

Missy’s Virtual Fashion Internship

In this Virtual Fashion Internship podcast I am asking Missy questions regarding the virtual internship PowerPoint she submitted to me upon completion of the project. Missy aka: Missy Lavecchia in Second Life is one of two Buffalo State Fashion Technology students that completed a virtual internship with Shenlei Winkler aka Shenlei Flasheart from the Fashion Research Institute in the summer of 2009. We are viewing the PowerPoint as we are discussing the internship.

We have been attempting to schedule this interview since September. After multiple postponements we finally managed to complete it in my campus office last Wednesday. I did not even notice the traffic noise in the background [including an ambulance] until after the interview was completed. We were viewing Missy’s PowerPoint as we discussed her reactions to the entire virtual internship experience.

You will hear in the interview that she developed a concept board for her brand, a color palette for her collection, presentation boards and packages as well as a customer service policy. Once her collection was completed she participated in a well attended virtual fashion show titled Fluid with two other interns.

[Note: you will see Missy's replies to follow-up interview questions in the next post: Virtual Fashion Internship Follow-Up Questions.]

Here is a link to The Fluid Fashion show event that was the culmination of the internships for three fashion students.

Buffalo State Fashion in Second Life

In the spring of 2007 and 2008 I had students participate in a Second Life fashion project that involves developing a series of garments and participating in a virtual fashion show. Here is a link to that 2007 project. We did a similar project in the spring of 2008 but I never had the time to organize and upload it to the Web. The virtual fashion class [link to post below] took place in the fall of 2008 and involved more advanced works in Second Life from students that completed the intro to Second Life class project that I presented in the second half of the FashionCAD class. I have developed an Intro to Second Life for Fashion Learning Module Series that anyone can use.

You can visit the Buffalo State island in Second Life to see all the student collections. Here is a SURL link to the student exhibit area. All of their virtual garments are available for free. There is an exhibit remaining from a virtual/real marketing project students did with Sears. Students created replicas of Sears catalog items available free in Second Life and linked to the real item for purchase. The real items are now discontinued so only virtual items are available.

Virtual Fashion Internships

Yes you are reading the heading correctly, virtual fashion internships are happening in Second Life. How do I know about them? I know about them because two of my fashion students recently completed virtual fashion internships and three students are currently working on a specialized virtual/real world project in Second Life. Who are they working with? They are working on the virtual portion of the project with Shenlei Winkler aka Shenlei Flasheart in Second Life from The Fashion Research Institute.

In my next post I will be interviewing Missy, a FashionCAD student that completed a virtual fashion internship in Second Life.

Shenlei Winkler [Fashion Research Institute in Second Life]

This all started in the spring of 2009 with students from my FashionCAD class. Last spring I was having a meltdown helping to prepare for the big Runway 2.0 production at Buffalo State college. Shenlei Winkler filled in for me with the FashionCAD students by working virtually with them on the Second Life project. Students signed on to Second Life and met up with Shenlei at the fashion Research institute. Students were teleported to the Fashion Research Institute

She guided them through various exhibits where they learned how to walk, fly, place items into their inventories, they were able to get skins, accessories, clothing hair, etc. Once they familiarized themselves in Second Life she teleported them up to a special fashion instructional area where all students were provided with a studio/office of their own. You can see a birds-eye view of the studio/office rooms that were created for each student in the images above. Each student was expected to decorate their office/studio room.

The images above [The instructor] show Shenlei Winkler aka Shenlei Flasheart in Sl gathering the FashionCAD students around her for their lessons in Second Life. She instructed them during class in the central area and assigned homework.

There was a central instructional area and students were posing to be photographed in their new outfits that they created.
