<p>Selline pisike ja kergelt cyberpunk kant (viitega <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mona_Lisa_Overdrive" target="_blank"><em>Mona Lisa Overdrive</em></a>&#8216;le, mõistagi). Tegelikult tundub see olevat &#8220;relvaparadiis&#8221;, kus on võimalik osta endale mechasid, mingeid lennuki moodi riistu ja arutus koguses tulirelvi. Kuid niipalju kui mina aru saan, on need lihtsalt kostüümi juurde kuuluvad aksessuaarid.</p>

<p>Meeleolukalt kujundatud Jaapani keskaja stiilis majade kompleks, kus võib istuda ja kuulata linnulaulu kirsipuude all, poodelda endale geiša või samurai kostüümi või ka võidelda mõõkadega. Kuid selleks on tarvis ennem kohapealt mõõk hankida ja leida koht, kus omanik lubab võidelda mängijate vahel. Kohapeal demonstreeris mulle asja üks sõbralik neiu nagu pildilt võite veenduda.<br />
Aimu saab <a href="http://nwn.blogs.com/nwn/2006/08/samurai_combat.html" target="_blank">Youtube videost</a>. Näha on, et tegu pole just tänapäeva mängude tasemel madinaga, kuid midagi sellegipoolest.<br />
Ise ma vaevalt oleks hakanud endale sellepärast mõõka ostma. Üldsegi saab Second Lifes palju asju ilma väljaminekuteta tehtud. Seega inimesed, kes arvavad, et kindlasti peab palju raha SLi investeerima, arvavad valesti.</p>

<p>Järgmisena jõudsin ühele motoringrajale, kus saab tsiklitega testisõitu teha ja neid ka osta. Kohapeal leidsin jällegi ühe sõbraliku tegelase, kes mulle reegleid tutvustas ning pärast ka korralikku sõitu tegi. Ma ise suutsin jõnksutades kuidagi jõuda ringraja äärealale, kus ma tsikli kaotasin ja kinni jäin.</p>

<p>Lisainfot SL-is toimuvatest mootorspordivõistlustest saab <a href="http://motosl.wordpress.com/" target="_blank">siit</a>. Näib, et eelmisel hooajal jaotati välja üle 60 000 L$ virtuaalauhinnaraha. Kuid uudishimu saab rahuldada ka lihtsalt tsikli proovisõiduks laenutades. Ma ei näinud otseselt mingeid piiranguid proovisõitu ringrajal jätkata lõpmatult. Peale füüsilise piirangu, et konkreetselt maaalalt ei tohtinud väljuda, kuna tegu pole sinu tsikliga, vaid näidiseksemplariga.</p>

<p>Koht, kus saab kaugeltjuhitavate autodega sõita pisikesel ringrajal. Võimalul on võimalus sõita ringi tasuta autoga, kuid on ka võimalus osta mingi vingem auto. Alul peab süsteemist aru saama: võta auto, vii alla rajale pit stoppi, seejärel tule istu ise üles juhitooli ning sõida.<br />
See oli ka üks väga vahva koht. Ma arvan, et kui sinna mitmekesi minna, on emotsioon palju ehedam.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>Sel nädalal uurin sellist suhtluskeskkonda ja fenomeni nagu<a href="http://www.secondlife.com/" target="_blank"> Second Life</a>. Igaüks võib sealt kliendi tasuta alla laadida ja virtuaalmaailma uurima tõtata.</p>
<p>Põhimõtteliselt <em>Massively Multiplayer</em> ja <em>Online</em>, kuid mitte päris mäng, vaid pigem virtuaalmaailmas asetsev jututuba, kuna otsest eesmärki tegevustel pole. Jaluta palmide all, lenda nagu Superman, telepordi teise virtuaalmaailma otsa nagu Star Trekis, osta ja müü nänni, modelleeri ise ümbritsevat maailma ja selles asetsevaid objekte või lihtsalt suhtle inimestega &#8211; see ongi Second Life. Aga mitte ainult. Mõne päevaga pole võimalik seal murdosagi näha. Nii püüangi anda pigem esmast muljet ja analüüsida seda algaja virtuaalseikleja vaatenurgast.</p>
<p>Second Life avas virtuaalsed uksed 23. juunil 2003 ning projekti eestvedajaks on algusest peale olnud USA ettevõte nimega Linden Labs. Tuhanded serverid jooksevad Debian Linuxi peal ning paiknevad laiali üle maailma. Virtuaalmaailma residendid ühenduvad serveritesse kasutades Windowsi, Mac OS Xi, Linuxi ja Solarise peal jooksvaid kliente, mis kasutavad 3D graafika jaoks OpenGLi võimalusi.</p>
<h3>Analüüs</h3>
<p>Lühikese analüüsi aluseks võtan <a href="http://interconnected.org/home/2004/04/28/on_social_software" target="_blank">Matt Webbi kriteeriumid</a>, mida võib pidada universaalseteks sotsiaalveebi iseloomustusjoonteks.</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Identiteet</strong> &#8211; esimene asi, mida Second Life&#8217;is pärast registreerimist tehakse, on endale avatari meisterdamine. Eesnime võid ise välja mõelda, kuid perenime pead valima etteantute hulgast. Taolise triki <a href="https://support.secondlife.com/ics/support/KBAnswer.asp?questionID=3889" target="_blank">põhjuseks tuuakse veidrate numbritega nimede vältimine</a>. Mõned näevad avatariga väga palju vaeva ning detaile on palju, mida võid paika panna. Alates lõua kujust ja kulmude kõrgusest kuni varba suuruseni ja riietuse materjalini (tekstuur). Ja see pole veel kõik &#8211; mängu jooksul võid osta/leida palju valmis olevaid avatare ja oma olemasoleva nende vastu vahetada. Näiteks draakoni raudrüü või tapjarobot. Ehk siis igaüks võib olla selline, kuidas tal vaid viitsimist ja tahtmist enda avatari mudida on.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><strong>Kohalolek</strong> &#8211; kasutajad teleporteeruvad oma eelmisesse asukohta või enda määratud &#8220;koju&#8221; ning avatar on nähtav ümbritsevatele inimestele. Juhul kui sõbrad pole ümbruses, siis nende SLis sees olemise jälgimiseks on &#8220;kontaktide nimekiri&#8221;. Sõbrad on need, kes on sinu sõbrakutse või sina nende kutse vastu võtnud ja kui nad sisse logivad, saad sa pisikese teavituse.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><strong>Vestlused</strong> &#8211; mõiste &#8220;local chat&#8221; tähendab võimalust rääkida &#8220;kuulmiskauguses&#8221; olevate avataridega. Aga suhelda saab ka kaugel asuvate sõpradega, kes on kontakti nimekirjas.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><strong>Rühmad</strong> &#8211; Sõpruse &#8220;taset&#8221; on võimalik suurendada nii, et lased kontaktil näha end kaardi peal. Samuti on võimalik SLis moodustada partnerlussuhteid ja siis neid jälle lahutada &#8211; seda võib võtta abieluna. <a href="http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Partnering" target="_blank">Partnerlussuhe </a>maksab 10L$ mõlemale osapoolele ja lahutamine 25L$ lahutamist nõudvale osapoolele. Kuid on olemas ka võimalus kuuluda suuremasse <a href="http://www.slprofiles.com/secondlifegroups.asp" target="_blank">gruppi</a>, mille peamiseks eesmärgiks on koondada avatare mingi ühise tunnuse alusel. Grupid võivad koos olla kinnisvara omanikud, keelata mitte-grupi liikmetel sellele maaalale juurdepääsu. Grupp omab ühist pangakontot, millele laekuvad summad jagatakse ühtlaselt grupi liikmete vahel. Kuid grupp on ka lihtsalt &#8220;veel üks moodus kuuluda kuhugile&#8221;; sinu gruppi kuuluvus on mainitud ära profiilis ja tihti iseloomustab gruppi ka avatari nime ees paiknev string.

<li><strong>Maine</strong> &#8211; lihtsaimaks reputatsiooni teenimise mooduseks on nagu tavalises maailmaski teiste inimeste abistamine. Sellest aga ei jää mingit märki maha peale jälje konkreetse inimese mälus. Natukene paremini annab materialistlikus maailmas mõõta asju rahas. SLs on rahaühikuna kasutusel Lindeni dollarid ehk L$ ning neid on võimalik osta ka reaalse raha, USA dollarite eest. Selle raha eest saab siis erinevatest poodidest osta igasugust rohkem ja vähem veidrat nänni. Näiteks esimesel päeval sain sõbraks ühe tüübiga, kes oli just ostnud kahe kohalise allveelaeva 800L$ eest ja tegi mulle sellega demo sõidu haide ja korallide vahel. Lootsin leida ka midagi &#8220;karma&#8221; laadset ehk siis mitte-rahalist reputatsiooni mõõdikut, kuid midagi sellist silma ei hakanud. Tüütud tegelased on võimalik vaigistada (mute), kuid tublisid ja abivalmid jäid paraku autasuta. Küsisin nõu nii mõneltki residendilt, kes seda ka lahkelt jagasid.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><strong>Jagamine</strong> &#8211; suheldes võid jagada äsja mainitud informatsiooni, sinu kaardi peal asuvaid huvitavaid sihtpunkte (landmarks), aga ka raha ja nänni, mida oled aja jooksul korjanud. Lisaks reaalelulistele komponentidele nagu värv, kuju, suurus, on SLi nännil ka omadus kopeeruda (või eksklusiivsemate asjade puhul jälle mitte). Minul jäi mulje, et vähemalt alguses saadaval olevaid tasuta asju sai anda teistele nagu arvuti faile &#8211; <em>copy-paste</em>. Ühes raamatus üks mees küll kusagil 33 AD <em>copy-pastes</em> rahvale leiba ja kala, kuid selle reaalelulisus jäägu igaühe enda otsustada. Oletan, et ülal mainitud allveelaeva-tüüp ei saa nii lihtsalt oma suurt investeeringut paljundada. Samas on aga täiesti aktiivselt toimivad turud, kus müüakse Second Life nänni ning mõned teenivad selle pealt täitsa korralikult.</li>
</ul>
<h3>Veel huvitavat Second Lifes</h3>
<ul>
<li><strong>Raha kulutamine</strong> &#8211; Second Lifes kulutatakse raha päris korralikult. Näiteks <a href="http://secondlife.com/statistics/economy-data.php" target="_blank">2009 augusti kohta käiv statistika</a> näitas, et rohkem kui 1ML$ kulutavaid residente on 1126. Üldse raha kulutavaid kliente on 473553, seega täiesti aukartust äratav kogus. Samas võib Second Life&#8217;i ka täiesti tasuta mängida.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><strong>Raha teenimine</strong> &#8211; Lisaks raha kulutamisele on olemas ka täiesti ulmelistesse numbritesse ulatuvad raha teenijad. Kui <a href="http://nwn.blogs.com/nwn/2009/03/million.html" target="_blank">sellest allikast</a> nüüd õigesti aru saada, siis 1,7M$ käib kvartali kohta ning tegu on kingamüümisäriga. 1M$ kanti äriga tegelevad ka kinnisvara ja mööbli ärimehed. NB! Tegu on päris reaalsete USA dollaritega $!</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><strong>Universaalne Translaator</strong> &#8211; Second Life on üleilmne multilinguaalne keskkond ning kui keegi hakkab rääkima prantsuse keeles, siis on võimalik hankida endale Google Translatori abiga töötav vidin, mis sulle teksti inglisekeelseks tõlgib. Olemas pidi olema ka teisi sarnaseid vidinaid. Kasutasin tasuta riista oma esimestes seiklustes üpris ohtralt ja olgugi, et tegu pole ideaalse riistaga, ajab see korrektse kirjutamise puhul asja täiesit ära, mõlemale osapoolele. Täiesti hämmastav.

<p>Huvitavat on kindlasti veel päevadeks, nädalateks ja kuudeks ning kui aega saan, siis uurin seda vinget virtuaalollust kindlasti edasi.</p>

There are two SF-related items that I&#8217;ve posted on ebay that may be of interest to some of you. The projector is handy for watching Plan 9 From Outer Space against the side of a house, or playing Wii inside with a bunch of friends (among many other creative and entertaining uses). The VFX1 VR Helmet just looks dang cool. The projector is fully operational, but the VR helmet doesn&#8217;t come with the controller card or other accessories that make it run. <content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>As we continue in the millenium, I am not surprised in the latest technology and what will be coming to us soon. Holograms has already reared its beautiful head through the media via <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=thOxW19vsTg" target="_blank">CNN</a> and the <a href="http://www.imeem.com/hulksmaash/video/IIjSP5Ls/d-yount-ironman-holographic-cgi-sequences-animation-video/" target="_blank">Iron Man movie</a>. The difference between holograms and augmented reality (AR),  would be that AR operates real-time which both previously mention examplars would qualify under this classification. </p>
<p>I ran into <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Augmented_reality" target="_blank">augmented reality</a> on, yes&#8230; Facebook, where GE was<a href="http://ge.ecomagination.com/smartgrid/#/augmented_reality" target="_blank"> advertising this new technology</a> for advertising its SmartGrid technology. GE has a demo for you to actually experience augmented reality. You need a webcam, microphone and a printer to print the marker for the magic to happen. The below demo is more realistic then the one from GE&#8230;</p>

He swapped out the LED&#8217;s on a pair of LED light safety glasses with a set of IR LEDs and used his PC/Wiimote combo to do the work. The demo is just fantastic. <content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>Yes, humans are going to end up in life sustaining pods, fed nutrients through an automatic delivery system and with our nervous system connected to a huge computer network.</p>
<p>The reason, however, is that it&#8217;s the natural progression from what we&#8217;re already doing today. We want to be always online, always connected, get real time status updates from friends, logged on to our favourite social networks and games wherever we are.</p>
<p>We want to work from home, to blend our professional and social lives, to augment our reality in any way possible. We have no problems envisioning a future where we go to work in a virtual environment, have virtual meetings instead of flying everywhere, and live virtual lives (just for fun? really?).</p>
<p>There&#8217;s no reason to believe we&#8217;re suddenly going to not want to live those virtual lives 24/7 &#8211; and that&#8217;s the same as accepting our pod-enclosed future. When our simulations are good enough, there&#8217;s very little need for a life in the physical world.</p>
<p>90% of all South Koreans in their 20s have a virtual existence on Cyworld. The mainstream Internet is only 10 years old. Try to project what the youth of 2040 are doing with their lives.</p>
<p>Can you? Do you even want to? Why not?</p>

<p>I&#8217;ve previously posted about telepresence and technologies that allow us to &#8220;be there&#8221; for face to face interactions over the internet.  <a href="http://www.world-heritage-tour.org/list.html">The World Heritage Tour</a> is a collection of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QuickTime_VR">Quicktime 3d panoramas</a> that allow web users to be &#8220;telepresent&#8221; and look around at <a href="http://www.world-heritage-tour.org/map.html"> many world heritage sites</a> themselves.  As more and more photos and videos are <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GeoTagging">geo-tagged</a>, I hope we will see virtual &#8220;web tourism&#8221; leveraging technologies like <a href="http://labs.live.com/photosynth/">Microsoft Photosynth</a> in the future.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>I&#8217;m jetlagged in California with what promises to be a long day tomorrow, but I had to post this before turning in for the night.  MTV has launched their <a href="http://vles.com">&#8220;virtual lower east side&#8221;</a> project and it looks to be quite cool.  I commented on the <a href="http://consolenomad.com/2007/06/11/virtual-rome-coming-to-second-life/">virtual historical Rome</a> the other day and pondered when we would see a virtual modern city&#8230;  Ask and ye shall receive it seems!  VLES looks to be a social networking &#8216;verse based around music, but it&#8217;s easy to imagine all kinds of extensions &#8211; perhaps synchronization between VLES and RLES (the &#8220;real&#8221; thing) for mixed reality events.</p>
<p>We recently streamed the local Philadelphia band <a href="http://www.myspace.com/troubleeveryday">Trouble Everyday</a> into SecondLife, and it was really well received.  Will bringing augmented reality to happening music venues be the next big thing?</p>

<p>I&#8217;ve already made an account, but didn&#8217;t bother downloading the client software to my laptop.  The download looked to be over 100meg, so I&#8217;m curious whether that means we are dealing with a &#8220;pre-distributed&#8221; world, or whether dynamically generated content will be possible.  Hopefully I&#8217;ll find out soon.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>There have been a number of <a href="http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/worldnews.html?in_article_id=461329&#38;in_page_id=1811">reports</a> today announcing the largest 3d model of a historical city to date: <a href="http://www.iath.virginia.edu/rome_reborn/test/RomeReborn1.0.html">Rome circa 320AD</a>.  Laser scans of modern Rome were combined with archaeological records to reconstruct 7,000 buildings.  Interestingly, Linden Lab has been approached about making the simulation available online.  Despite the questionable feasibility of actually porting something of this scale over to Second Life (as it stands today), it is interesting that they are entertaining the idea.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m still waiting for the first total reconstruction of a modern city online &#8211; all the way down to geo-positioned avatars for my friends and &#8220;windows&#8221; of real time video where the feeds exist&#8230;</p>

Entire scenes are reconstructed in 3d from Flickr photosets through the application of computer vision algorithms.</p>

<title><![CDATA[People's Virtual Republic - 150 Million Avatars]]></title>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>In real terms it hasn&#8217;t been all that long since <a href="http://secondlife.com/">Second Life</a> celebrated its millionth avatar registration.  Now the municipality of Beijing (through <a href="http://www.crd.gov.cn/en/crdEnglish_GenINTRO.asp">CRD</a>) and <a href="http://www.entropiauniverse.com/">Entropia Universe</a> hope to bump things up a couple of orders of magnitude.</p>
<p>Last Friday they <a href="http://technology.guardian.co.uk/news/story/0,,2093758,00.html?gusrc=rss&#38;feed=networkfront">announced a partnership</a> to build a virtual world for China with an aim to scale to 150 million avatars, 7 million simultaneous logins, and a billion dollar economy.  CRD hopes that such a project could ultimately create 10,000 new jobs in China &#8211; many of them virtual.</p>
<p>While many Second Life fans see Entropia as more of a game than a virtual world, there are a number of reasons they may have won out over Second Life, who also bid for the project.  China, more than many countries, has concerns about the nature of content its people are exposed to online.  Despite their experience protecting the &#8220;teen grid&#8221;, the openness of Second Life does not lend itself to a &#8220;walled garden&#8221; scenario as well as a closed platform would.</p>
<p>Additionally, Entropia has been on the forefront of tightly coupling virtual and real economies together &#8211; even offering an <a href="http://www.entropiauniverse.com/en/rich/5676.html">Entropia debit card</a> allowing real world purchases against virtual cash accounts.  Given the run away success of the unregulated <a href="http://online.wsj.com/public/article/SB117519670114653518-FR_svDHxRtxkvNmGwwpouq_hl2g_20080329.html">QQ economy</a>, China may be seeking to build a more controllable alternative online economy.</p>
<p>At this point it&#8217;s just a press release, and there are certainly other contenders such as <a href="http://www.virtual-china.org/2007/02/hiphi_chinese_s.html">HiPihi</a>, so it will definitely be interesting to see how it plays out.</p>

I&#8217;ve seen people hack together a number of cool things, but the best eye candy so far comes from <a href="http://www.netqos.com/network-monitoring/network-monitoring-labs.html">Netcosm</a>.  In a standards based user interface of the future, this could lead to some great opportunities for collaborative visualization and troubleshooting.</p>

The <a href="https://www.icuiti.com/VR920_store.php">VR920</a> promises dual 640&#215;480 progressive scan LCDs for that hi-res 3d effect, builtin headset and mic, and three degrees of head tracking freedom &#8211; all weighing in at under three ounzes.  I&#8217;m skeptical of the claimed April ship date, but with my deposit down I hope to be among the first batch and promise to post reviews as soon as mine arrives.</p>
<p>I haven&#8217;t heard anything around Second Life support, but it should only be a matter of hacking and rebuilding the client.  With voice coming online in the near future as well, this should make for quite the immersive experience.</p>

<p>&#8220;Augmented&#8221; may be a stretch here, but that&#8217;s how <a href="http://www.dvetelepresence.com/">DVE</a> is choosing to brand their holographic telepresence podium product.  It&#8217;s sort of a productization of the <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AiCt4fU4E_8">holographic keynote</a> that Richard Branson gave a while back (via <a href="http://www.eyeliner3d.com/">Musion Eyeliner 3d</a>).  No indication that the DVE experience is <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R0_WhSdsgBo">bidirectional</a> (seems more like broadcast), but, at a minimum, it&#8217;s an interesting option for corporate communications.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>Wired reports that NASA is going prime-time with their <a href="http://www.wired.com/science/space/news/2007/04/cosmoscode_0409">open source initiatives</a> &#8211; it looks like they will be crowdsourcing code to run on actual missions.  STS-FOSS indeed.</p>
<p>Two interesting factors jumped out at me.  First, the <a href="http://www.cosmoscode.org">program</a> was driven by two young (under 30) scientists out of NASA Ames.  Second, they have been using the virtual world Second Life to hold meetings and organize their project.  The picture Wired chose to run for the story is a picture of one of their avatars.</p>
<p>Welcome to the future of work.  We have two innovators, arguably of the millennial generation, building a community instead of re-inventing the wheel.  Moreover, they are experimenting with new forms of collaboration to bring cohesion to a geographically dispersed group of volunteers.  Virtual work in virtual worlds.</p>
<p>For those interested in finding out more, they will be hosting a Second Life adjunct to the <a href="http://www.worldspaceparty.com/">Yuri&#8217;s Night</a> party on April 13th at the sim <b>Space Colab</b>.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>A friend just pointed me to a <a href="http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/07_14/b4028001.htm" title="BusinessWeek - The Mind-Bending New World Of Work ">BusinessWeek story on VR2.0</a>.  Interestingly, they suggest that VR technologies may finally be finding their way out of the&#8221;trough of disillusionment.&#8221;  They go on to suggest that the Wii may mainstream virtual interfaces in the same way that the iPod mainstreamed the mp3.  Some of the applications described are as much augmented reality as they are virtual &#8211; advertisement displays that follow and mimic you, for example.</p>
<p>Perhaps most interesting is the bit about Google&#8217;s acquisition of Neven Vision.  Apparently this acquisition bought them patents on certain methods for facial expression tracking.  This technology could be used in conjunction with webcams or cellphones to map expressions and moods to avatars.  No word from Google on any products yet.</p>

<p>Shamelessly lifted from Mark Wallace&#8217;s excellent <a href="http://www.3pointd.com">blog</a>, this clip really demonstrates the utility of platforms like Second Life.  Second Life avatar and EMU student, Lordfly Digeridoo, modeled a 16 acre site plan in Second Life over the course of a week.  This time lapse video shows a master builder at work. <p>If the potential interests you, then definitely check the <a href="http://seewhatyoumean.3ds.com/seewhatumean/Video_en/index.htm">Dassault Systems advertisement</a> that <a href="http://eightbar.co.uk/2007/04/03/dassault-systems-tv-ad/">Ian posted</a> a few days ago.  They paint a great picture of what happens when you pull these capabilities out of the flatscreen and put them on the tabletop.  Future aside, Dassault is doing <a href="http://cb.nowan.net/blog/2007/03/31/the-pyramid-and-the-biggest-vr-screen/">some interesting work</a> in immersive 3d experiences today.</p>
