From left to right: Letts baroque, Rhodia web notebook, Letts noteletts, Moleskine.

It took longer time than I thought, but now I have testdrived Letts of London (LOL) noteletts, LOL Baroque, Rhodia webnotebook 80g (sorry – haven’t got hold of any of the newer yet) and Moleskine blank journal. Their size vary slightly, but it is basically the same concept; rubber band and pocket inside. Note that I have bought and paid these by myself – this comparison is independent and done as a part of the quest for a real good notebook (yet to find). I used a variety of pens and nib sizes and inks to get a good view of the paper in the notebook The most prominent feature among all are that none are real fountain pen friendly, but both Letts are better than the Moleskine and Rhodia – not much, but enough to be significant. You can’t write on both pages – even with a fine nib – in any of them. In order to view the writing samples properly: click on the photos.

Letts’ noteletts is clothed instead of the faux leather that the other sports. Good thing: variation and five colours available. Bad thing (for me who spills and carry it with me all the time) is that it stains more easily than faux leather. You can choose between lined, blank or squared (good for me who like blank pages). Paper is cream coloured . Upper right corner has a discrete date box that one can fill out or ignore. The paper quality is best out of the four, but it still features too much bleed through and feathering. It is almost worth the price.

Letts baroque seems to be a LE edition with flower textured faux leather (flower alligator?). It is the prettiest and most original of the four. Very nice. It comes in three colours; deep carmine red, black and brown (see earlier post). The paper is not the same as in the noteletts and has a rather odd feature: every odd page is lined and every other blank – the left page is blank and the right is lined when you open it. Interesting, but I can’t help wondering why. The design makes it almost worth the price (about 20% cheaper than Moleskine here), but they should put their regular paper (best would be an even better paper than the regular) in this one and make it a part of their regular range,

Rhodia web note book 80 g/m paper The smallest of the four. This paper was a real bad surprise. I had expected – even though I knew that they have upgraded it to a 90g web note book – the paper to be something that felt like it came from a well reputed paper manufacturer, but unfortunately it didn’t. The paper has a nice colour and a nice feel to it, but it feathers even worse than Moleskine. Another drawback is that it only (even the new web note book) comes with lined pages. I prefer blank pages and can’t understand why they don’t bother to make both blanks, lined and squared. The least fountain pen friendly of the four. Not worth the hype or price. I can only hope that the 90 g paper does this brand justice.

Moleskine The brand everyone loves to hate. Costs almost equivalent to $30 here. The paper is better than the paper in Rhodia’s web notebook, but it doesn’t justify the hilarious price. It loves to feather and let the ink seep through the page.

Details from the Ginger Bread Charity Diorama at the Four Seasons Hotel, Austin, Texas. Photos by Tracie B.

Maybe it’s the little boy in me… I’ve always been fascinated with culinary anamorphism — a cultural phenomenon whereby food is refashioned to resemble something else, edible or otherwise.

The tradition of fashioning food to look like buildings stretches back to the Renaissance. One of the most famous examples is torrone nougat: on the occasion of the wedding of Bianca Maria Visconti to Francesco Sforza, October 25, 1441, the bride and groom were presented with a nougat replica of the city’s church bell tower, the so-called Torrione (today known as the Torrazzo) from which the sweet derived its name.

Another such example from recent memory is Abe Lebewohl’s depiction of Manhattan’s Twin Towers, fashioned out of chopped liver from the Second Avenue Deli.

The Art of Cooking by fifteenth-century Italian chef Maestro Martino (which I translated for UC Press, 2005) offers many examples of culinary anamorphism, mostly for the sake of recreating milk and eggs on days when they were forbidden by the Catholic church.

Last night Tracie B had to drag me away from the ginger bread diorama in the lobby of the Four Seasons Hotel in downtown Austin. Our good friend chef Todd Duplechan oversees the creation and construction of this wondrous little city. Each edifice is auctioned off for charity (last year, a celebrity loved it so much, she paid for it to be recreated and reassembled in Las Vegas, “just so she could show how cool Austin is,” said chef Todd).

If we want everything to stay the same, everything must change… Above: To watch Visconti

If we want everything to stay the same, everything must change…

Above: To watch Visconti’s battle scenes is to see the hand of a Renaissance master in motion. I highly recommend this epic classic.

Last night, as Tracie B and I watched the first 90 minutes of Visconti’s 1963 technicolor classic Il gattopardo (The Leopard), I couldn’t help but think of the passages we read from Count Camillo Cavour’s epistolary in my “Italian Wine and Civilization” seminar last week at the Austin Wine Merchant. In the opening sequences of the movie, the Prince of Salina reads aloud from a letter sent to him by courier from his brother-in-law: “My dear Fabrizio, I am writing to you in a state of utter collapse. Such dreadful news in the paper. The Piedmontese have landed. We are all lost.” The backdrop for the movie is Garibalidi’s Expedition of the Thousand: in 1860, General Giuseppe Garibaldi landed in Sicily with an army of “a thousand” and defeated the forces of the Kingdom of Two Sicilies. In doing so, he implemented the final (and historically symbolic) stage of the Unification of Italy, orchestrated, in large part, by Count Cavour in Piedmont.

Above: The banquet and ball sequences of Visconti’s film are among the most celebrated in international cinema history. Scorsese is a fan…

A very short 15 years before, and three years before the first Italian War of Independence in 1848, Count Cavour — the architect of Italian unity — was planning another crusade of sorts, an “enological crusade”:

To Giacomo Giovanetti, Novara

I openly confess that the excellent wine of Sizzano has almost convinced me that luxury wines can be produced in Piedmont. To a great degree, this wine possesses that which bestow prestige on the wines of France and which our wines generally lack, bouquet. The bouquet of the Sizzano does not resemble that of Bordeaux but rather the bouquet of Burgundy where wines like Clos Vougeot and Romanet [Romanée] enjoy supremacy over all the wines of France for their delicate qualities.

Therefore, it has been proven that the hills of Novara can compete with the hills of Burgundy. In order to triumph in this struggle, [estate] owners must diligently oversee the production of their wines so that the wines will be rich, elegant, and indulgent. I hope to take part in this enological crusade [italics mine] and I will do what I can in the circles within which I move. In order to act expeditiously, it is crucial that you inform as to whether or not these wines of this caliber are available for sale and what is their price. If Count Solaro ever gives up his post — something I doubt he’d ever be willing to do — I will send the wines of Sizzano as a gift to all the diplomats. In the meantime, I will drink them with my friends and toast to your health.

Turin, July, 1845. (Translation mine.)*

As the letter reveals (in my unpublished translation), it was a wine from the township of Sizzano (in the province of Novara, Piedmont, not far from Gattinara) that first inspired Cavour’s “enological crusade,” to make wine in Piedmont that could rival the wines of Burgundy.

With this in mind, I couldn’t help but find uncanny Franco’s post today, announcing a wonderful tasting of Langa Nebbiolo and Burgundies this weekend in the town of La Morra (in the heart of Langa). The tasting, entitled Their Majesties (aka, Nebbiolo and Pinot Noir), is intended to create dialog and discussion of the affinities and differences between these two noble grapes and terroirs.

Today, as Italy’s tenuous unity teeters more precariously than ever on the divide between north and south, it might seem to some that Cavour’s enolgoical crusade has been the more successful. “If we want everything to stay the same,” says the Prince of Salina, “everything must change.” (That’s the cover of the editio princeps of the English translation of Lampedusa’s 1958 novel Il gattopardo, published in 1960, and given to us by Tracie B’s dear friend Lena.)

Above: Tracie B’s ragù was so good last night with a bottle of the 2007 Dolcetto by Marchesi di Gresy. We love that wine…

I wish I could spend the whole day reflecting and writing about Cavour and Nebbiolo, Lampedusa and Visconti, Nebbiolo and Pinot Noir… but, alas, it’s already 9 a.m. and time to get to work and hit the market and “move some boxes,” as they say in the business. I’m headed to San Antonio… Stay tuned… We’ll be watching the second half of the movie tomorrow night…

In other Nebbiolo news…

I love it when McDuff writes about one of his favorite producers of Nebbiolo, Vajra, as he did today… Check it out…

…are a rather cheap and easy way to lighten and brighten up the spirits when the darkness feels a little bit too much…or just to enhance the happiness…or because it is fun with bright, playful inks.

Here are some of my current cheerers! Mostly Diamine, so I would like to add that I don’t have any affiliation with Diamine. They just happen to produce inks that I like in small convenient plastic bottles which – even with shipping from the UK to almost anywhere in the world taken into account - are cheap, comes in something like 60 colours and are of high standard. Me like. Another pleasant feature if you order straight from their website is that – ordering 3 or more small plastic bottles – that you get a pack of 18 assorted cartridges for free. That was what made me realize how many beautiful, strange, fun and gorgeous inks out there, that are just waiting to be used.

…are so beautiful. The two first photos show my Visconti Opera with its elegant nib. Classic, but the special breather hole gives it a character of its own. The third photo is a pen that I don’t have in my possession anymore…the nib was too broad. It is a Montegrappa Nero Uno and I really like its sleek, streamlined, modern design. If I find it for a good price with a fine nib I’ll buy it again. The nib on a fountain pen not only adds character to the handwriting, it is also adds visual character and personality. It is a joy to look at the nib while writing. A little piece of art in itself. Functional art.

These are the inks that I currently use. One of the best findings the last year is that one can use a broad calligraphy nib with a sunshine yellow ink (or any other ink of a light and bright hue) as a highlighter pen. Much nicer – and more functional as well – than ugly fluorescent highlighter colours in ugly pens that always dries out fast – even if you cap them. My faves among these are the Sunshine Yellow, the Monaco Red, the Royal Blue and the Mediterranean Blue. Lovely colours for everyday use.

I was going through and sorting old photos and stumbled over a folder with photos from Tuscany and Florence which I took a few years ago. Looking at the photos made me forget the cold, hazy October weather for a while and instead dream a little of Tuscany – the food, the landscape, the beautiful Italian language, the scent from pine and – of course – the wine. The Visconti pens are actually made in Florence, where one also can find a Visconti museum where one can see both pens from their regular production and the more spectacular ones (some of them are quite over the top…at least for me). I’ve not been there myself, but think I will go there next time I visit Florence. A beautiful, classic town that is best to visit a bit off season when it is not too crowded.

The Visconti Opera in Black Guilloche (striped) pattern has – to my surprise – become one of my favourite pens. It is not the most handsome (even if it is a beautiful pen) but it is such a great writer and flatters my handwriting with its stubbish, luscious nib, which was customized by a British nibmeister. The ink used here is Diamine Claret. Pink isn’t my usual fare, but this dark pink/cerise has a positive impact on me. It is hard to be real grumpy when writing with this ink. I mostly use it for letters, journalling and private notes. If you are curious about this pen you’ll find my review of it here – in the review section at The Fountain Pen Network, which is a pleasant site for people who like fountain pens. It is a great information source with loads of nice, helpful people sharing their knowledge, tips and photos – a friendly zone in cyber space. Before I landed there I didn’t have a clue about the vast amount of pens, brands, nibs, filling systems and inks that are possible to find out there – and that there are so many people over the world that are interested in pens, inks, papers and pen paraphernalia.

Even if I’ve always liked to write with a good pen – preferably a fountain pen – I hadn’t realized how big this sphere is and that I – a long time pen freak – am not alone in having this odd passion for pens. Using a fountain pen may seem like an anachronism in this digitalized, bic pen world – like a pose. I use it partly for the tactile pleasure, partly because it is more joy in writing with a beautiful pen, partly because my handwriting gets (because of the friction against the paper) more legible and stylish with a fountain pen and partly because the wide variety of inks – which contributes largely to this interest. Roller balls (which I prefer aside from fountain pens) are nice, but the variety in ink colours is so incredibly narrow – Blue, Black, Red and Green is as good as it usually gets. OK, one can use gel pens – Muji makes some very nice gel pens with a broad range of ink colours – which are very good in their class. The downside being that they are disposable, without any weight to them and that a little ball never can replace a fountain pen nib. They are accurate, but the feeling just isn’t there. When you write with a fountain pen you can choose the ink colour freely – depending on mood, purpose with the writing – regardless of brand (as long as it is ink made to be used in fountain pens). It surely offers a freedom – especially if you have a few pens – to be able to have the ink brand and colour of your pleasure in the pen that you like. Bottled ink (that can be used if you have a converter) has a low mileage and is very cheap to use (even the more exclusive ones) compared with roller ball refills and ink cartridges. But, aside from the economical aspect and the sustainability of fountain pens; it is not only that different inks gives variation to the writing, The nib contributes greatly to the variation. An ink can be perceived very differently depending on which nib it is used in. Another thing is the shading of the ink when you write with a fountain pen. It makes the text come alive in a beautiful way. Many don’t like shading when it comes to black inks – a black ink shall be opaque and deep black without any variation – but I like shading even in black inks. So, there is a huge world of pens and inks out there to explore.

When I got smitten by the fountain pen fever, via FPN over a year ago – before that I was just someone who preferred fountain pens – I got an urge to try as many pens and inks I could (afford) and had almost a year of wild buying, trying, selling, buying, trying, selling – which I am happy for – it was wonderful trying boatloads of different fountain pens from different brands – Aurora, Cleo Skribent, Conway Stewart, Delta, Lamy, Montblanc, Montegrappa, Pelikan, Pilot, Reform, Rotring, Sailor, Sheaffer, Visconti, Waterman – and different ink brands and colours. One real good thing about it is to learn what you really really like and want and let go of the things that don’t click with you to 100%. If I had kept all pens I buyed and tried I had become completely broke . The second hand market for fountain pens – both at FPN and eBay – is large which is a good thing both for buying-for-trying and for selling off the pens that one doesn’t like. And – the depreciation of most quality fountain pens is much less compared to any other electronic device.

I actually bought a computer (used) and a Montblanc fountain pen for about the same amount of money at about the same time – just when I moved from home to begin at the University. My mum thought I was out of my mind – which I guess I was…at least a bit. I had worked quite hard for the money during the summer, so it was my money to spend and I badly wanted that Montblanc fountain pen. I guess the computer is fragmented into atoms now – but when I sold the pen a year ago I almost got the same amount of money as I paid for it. That being years later for a pen in used condition. The inflation hasn’t been so bad, so I guess I got about 75% of its original worth. After 10< years of use! That is not bad. So, even if it seemed weird at the time – the pen was the better buy in the long run. OK – I used the computer for writing papers and essays, so it got pretty much use, but anyway. I think it is a rather good story – a true one.

It is more to things than what meets the eye and sometimes the things that seem most irrational are the most rational – in the long end. I am very happy for that, actually. The Swedish poet Gunnar Ekelöf has written a great poem about the irrational being the most rational in the long run.I find that very hopeful.

Since I was a kid I’ve enjoyed writing with a special pen. A special pen doesn’t have to be expensive or beautiful or exclusive. A special pen is a pen that my hand feels at home with; that makes the hand feel relaxed and focused on writing, yet experiencing the tactical pleasure of putting the pen to the paper. The pen above is one of my current favourites. It has a stubbish – slightly calligraphic – nib and is so comfortable to write with that it feels like I could write with it forever and ever.

All’autrice ha evocato sentimenti antichi. Queste pagine ci parlano. Perché anche i lucani vogliono essere parlati.

Non somigliano a niente quei colori…

A volte capitano. Poche persone in giro. Comincio a riconoscere.

The Edison Pen Company is an American boutique pen-making company owned and operated by a great craftsman named Brian Gray.

Originally posted on FPN.

The first Huron made from Yellowstone Acrylic, my pen is one of the handful of prototypes Brian sold before launching the Huron. I’m happy to write that on the Edison Pen website the Yellowstone material is offered as a standard choice for the Huron.

The catalyst for this pen purchase was the Yellowstone Acrylic material. Having seen an Edison Herald in the same material I contacted Brian Gray to ask about a custom pen. I shared my concerns about Edison pens being too large for my small hand, and told him about the types of pens I was using. As luck would have it he was working on the prototype of what would become the Huron, a somewhat thinner pen with a more tapered section than his other pens. When I saw the photos of the ebonite prototype I was sold.

Ultimately I wanted to use this pen as an eyedropper. At the time I ordered this pen, Brian was not yet offering a piston filling option other than on the Brockton LE. I ordered the premium converter as a backup filling plan.

Appearance and Design
The pen is beautiful. The acrylic has a wonderful depth to it. It’s gold and yellow and caramel and green-but-not-really-green-but-yellow. When I look at it, I feel like I’m standing creek side watching the pebbles underneath the water.

The pen is clipless by my choice (thanks again to Brian’s patience!). The pen looks great with a clip too.

The nib is a single-tone yellow 18K nib. Again, personal preference there with the single-tone nib. Brian offers a variety of nib options. The nib is imprinted with Brian’s logo. I felt if I was going so far to have a customized pen it should have the Edison logo. (The steel nib does not come with the Edison logo as of this writing.)

On the barrel is a simple, tiny imprint on two lines: Edison Pen Co., 2009. Because the pen is a prototype there is no “Huron” imprinted on it. The imprint is so small as to be almost unnoticeable on the barrel.

The cap seems quite long and that is my only not-very-serious grievance with the pen. It could be a tad shorter and still have plenty of room for the nib.

Dimensions
Length 5.75″ – 14.6 cm
Length Uncapped 5 .125″ – 13 cm
Length Posted 7.4” – 18.8 cm
Diameter .550″ – 1.4 cm
Diameter of Cap .610” – 1.5 cm

Pen Weight – YMMV (using a basic digital scale)
With the premium converter in place:
Uninked: 15g w/out cap & 23g w/cap.
Inked: it’s the same as uninked on my scale.
The premium converter weighs 3g!

As an eyedropper:
Uninked: 12g w/out cap & 20g capped.
Inked: 15-16g w/out cap & 24 capped.

Filling System
I used this pen with the converter for two months because I was afraid of using it as an eyedropper. For this piston-loving pen user a c/c pen is a little frustrating because I run through the ink too fast. But, hey, it works fine with a converter if that’s your thing.

I’ve never had an eyedropper pen before. It took me two months to get up the nerve to finally put the converter away. I was worried about the acrylic staining. Brian warned me that even though the pen is not translucent the ink might make my pen appear darker when inked. (He also assured me he had some ideas should I begin to freak about staining. No freak outs thus far.) The pen does look slightly darker as an eyedropper, but for me the beauty of the Yellowstone acrylic is enhanced.

Once I turned the pen over to being an eyedropper, I was thrilled with the ink capacity. The conversion was painless (eyedropper users already know this): remove the converter, and put a little silicon grease on the external section threads, and fill the barrel with ink. The barrel holds about 5 converters worth of ink. Nice.

I told Brian that this pen would be perfect if it had a built-in piston. Now that I’m using the pen as an eyedropper, I’m rather enamored of that little barrel filling ritual, and the lack of a piston has become moot.

Nib
The pen has a smooth 18K fine nib that writes (to me) very wet. Initially I thought the nib might lay too wet of a line, and Brian offered to adjust it to my liking. Deciding to take a week or so to write with the pen, I quickly came to appreciate the nib. I’m also using an ink that tends to be more dry (Diamine Raw Sienna).

Cost and Value
Costs of a pen are facts (see the EdisonPen website). Value of a pen is subjective. The value of this pen is that I can write with it for long periods without my hand tiring, the pen performs flawlessly, and the Yellowstone acrylic gives me a lot of pleasure while I’m using it.

Conclusion
I wouldn’t mind another one of these pens with one of the steel nibs offered. Let’s see…the pen holds a lot of ink when used as an eyedropper. It comes in a great color. It’s lightweight and comfortable in my hand. It performs flawlessly. It comes backed by Brian Gray. Cool.

Please check the FPN thread on this topic for more info and corrections. I have to credit FPN folks, esp. Eric & Kate, for gathering together the known information about Ragtimes. My intention here is to gather together much of the information into one place. If anyone reading this post knows of other Ragtimes, or links to important information, please leave a comment about it. If I unknowingly imparted misinformation kindly let me know that, too.

Despite my current Conklin obsession, if I had to collect only one fountain pen the Visconti Ragtime might be the one. It’s a perfect size and weight for my hand. It’s a piston filler, it’s made from cellulose nitrate, and it has the wonderful, whimsical 1920’s-style clip on its cap.

<img class="size-medium wp-image-404" title="Visconti Ragtime Caps" src="http://peaceablewriter.wordpress.com/files/2009/09/2capsac.jpg?w=300" alt="Left: Accademia Italiana.
Founded in 1988 by two pen collectors, the Italian company released the first edition of the Ragtime in 1991. In a Penna magazine article (Jan/Feb 2008, No. 84) Giuseppe Romano writes the Ragtime was Visconti’s “first fountain pen with an original design.” The pen was available in four colors: cinnabar, blonde, green and blue. Some pens were released with glass nibs.

As of 2009 Visconti has released six kinds of pens with the Ragtime name. Unless otherwise indicated the pens are made from cellulose nitrate (celluloid). In addition to fountain pens, there is also a ball point pen version. In the case of the 20th LE there is also a roller ball version. The information herein about non-fountain pens is incomplete.

Ragtime. 1991. Material: celluloid sheet. Color: Green, Blue, Blonde (Pearl/Black), Cinnabar (Orange/Black). Ball point pen and mechanical pencil also made.

New Ragtime, or Ragtime II. 1994. Material: Celluloid sheet.olor: Green, Blue, Blonde (Pearl/Black), Cinnabar (Orange/Black). Ball point pen also made.

Ragtime Black, or Ragtime III. 1999. Material: Lucite. Color: uh, it’s Black. This is a smaller Ragtime that’s about the size of a Pelikan M200. Rollerball pens also made.

Ragtime Medici. 2000. Material: Lucite. Medici has engraving. Color: Black.

Ragtime 20th Anniversary LE. 2008. Material: acryloid. Color: Caramel, Pearl and Brown swirls. 1988 made in honor of the Visconti company’s 20th anniversary. Rollerball and ball point pens also made. Also released as a 3-piece set with all 3 types of pens, 3 stones and remover from the Visconti My Pen System, and a Nautilus roll-top display case.

Other Ragtimes include limited and special editions, commissions and prototypes which do not carry the Ragtime name. The list below includes only those pens I’m aware of.

Accademia Italiana. 1990. Material: Celluloid sheet. Color: Blue, Green and Black. 130 made. A commission by Accademia Italiana Della Penna Stilografica (Italian Fountain Pen Academy). Far more stunning in person than any photo I’ve seen.

Caravel. 1992. Material: Celluloid bar/rod. Color: Light Blue (Nina), Brown (Pinta), Plum (Santa Maria). Only 500 made. 14K nib. The first flat-top Ragtime. The Caravel honors the voyage of Columbus.
