The Microsoft security update KB973525, issued on Oct 13 2009, fixes some vulnerabilities in ActiveX running under Internet Explorer.

All that we see is a little square with a red cross (in Windows XP) or a failed-image icon (in Windows 2000). Both the 2003 and the 2007 versions of Visio Viewer fail.

Vorallem am Anfang der 4. Klasse ziemlich wichtig wenn es in ADAT um die Modellierung von Datenbanken geht und auch sonst ziemlich nützlich. Die restlichen Möglichkeiten habe ich noch nicht ganz ausgelotet aber es ist bestimmt noch einiges möglich.

Der einzige Wirkliche Nachteil ist, dass es nicht kompatibel mit dem oben erwähnten Dia ist und man die Dateien so immer als PDF oder PNG sichern sollte zum weitergeben. Außerdem besteht noch die Möglichkeit das ganze als Viso-Dokument zu speichern.

Matt Davey recently wrote about studies of software development diagrams.

In my experience, a pencil and paper design is better than a Visio diagram because it can be created, edited, and iterated much more quickly and the pencil doesn’t get in the way. Rarely do I fight my real life ruler to make straight lines, but I regularly curse Visio.

There is no need for the overwhelming number of Visio software and systems diagrams.  The diagrams would be 10 times as good with 1/10th the effort if the pencil (with liberal allowance for erasers) were used instead.  These diagrams can be easily scanned and kept forever with documentation.

The real issue is that the managers, the people who have no interest in the functionality of the diagrams themselves, insist on diagrams made with tools.  So Visio diagrams get created, they are rarely if ever updated and they take much more time to create with no extra benefit.  Thank you PHB.

Os presento esta utilidad que sirve para dibujar diagramas estructurados, como mapas de red, procesos, etc.  Está a años luz de Microsoft Visio, pero puede ser una alternativa suficiente para quien no necesite más que realizar diagramas sencillos, y sobretodo muy interesante teniendo en cuenta que es open souce.

Una vez instalado, podemos encontrar diferentes tipos de objeto, como elementos de Cisco para diagramas de redes, ordenadores, etc. La interfaz es sencilla y las posibilidades un tanto escasas, pero como ya hemos dicho antes, considerando que no tiene coste alguno, puede ser una alternativa a tener en cuenta.

Nimittäin, tapaus Tippuriteini. Tytön mutsi on ollut ihan paskana, kun uhkasin aluksi ihan vakavissani nostaa oikeusjutun. Se on tukkinut mun molempin luurien vastaajat itkuviesteillään eikä anna hetken rauhaa. Mä voisin antaa heille viestintäkonsultointia, siis neuvoja siihen, miten haastattelut ja pressitilaisuudet kannattaa hoitaa, miten saa solmittua mahdollisimman hyvät sponsorisopimukset, miten huono julkisuus käännetään hyväksi, miten säilyttää hyvä itsetunto vaikka mediassa tulisi paskaa niskaan, miten säilyttää tuntuma omaan itseen, vaikka menisi kuinka lujaa. Tähän voi yhdistää myös ravitsemus- ja elämänhallintavinkit. Niitä olisi Henna Kalinainenkin kaivannut, sillä hänellä meni vähän liiankin lujaa BB:n jälkeen, minkä tuloksena Henna pöhöttyi. Mutta päiväkirjansa mukaan hän on tajunnut nyt liikunnan, ravinnon ja säännöllisen unirytmin tärkeyden. Go Henna! P-man voisi viedä tätä ideaa konseptitasolle ja miettiä, miten tuotteistaa visio. Se on käytännön jutuissa aivan pirun skarppi ja ahkera jätkä kun se vaan innostuu jostain.

Vielä pari sanaa BB:stä. Voi luoja mua hävettää Tonin ja Ason olematon kielitaito. Ja mitä vitun idiootteja noi jätkät on. Toni alkaa selittään Cathylle jotain Lordista ja Rovaniemestä. Ihan sama kun jos Cathy alkais kertoa että mä olen kotoisin tuolta Niadomingin kylästä ja sielät on myös tää mun lempilaula Hon-Fin Thuu. Öö, okei….. Toni on muutenkin niin yököttävän leso, näkee että jätkä ei ole paljon kuntoillut, mutta viinaa menee senkin edestä. Ja noi vitun pätkityt kulmakarvat a´la Becham on so 90`s!!!!!!!

When you publish a Visio diagram as a web page through the Visio File/Save as Web Page wizard the hyperlinks that you have created on any shapes replace the current page when you click on them. In some cases you may desire to have a popup window displayed so that a detailed or properties type window is displayed without losing the view of the current diagram.

Unfortunately there are no options with the Visio Save as Web Page wizard that allows you to configure this type of behavior. However, it’s fairly simply to edit one of the files generated by the save process and achieve the desired result.

When you use the ‘Save as Web Page’ publish wizards one of the check boxes on the dialog box is to ‘Organize files in a support folder’ which is checked by default.   When you save your Visio as Web Page a number of support files including several java script files are placed in a folder that has the same name as your file with “_files” appended.

The frameset.js file is the one that needs to be modified in order to produced the desired effect of having hyperlinks displayed in popup windows rather than replacing the contents of the diagram.

In this file there is a function called OnShapeClick that handles the hyperlinks on shapes.  In order to add the desired functionality we are going to remove the top.location.href line of code and replace it with a typical window.open line.   We also get the handle to the window so that we can set the newly created windows focus so that the window pops to the front of the view.

You will notice that the new code has all the typical parameters to the window.open function so you have a rather fine grain of control on how you want your window to look.

Visio 2010 is about to go into beta so we’ll have to keep a look out to see if this capability becomes part of the product.  But until then this is a work around that I have used in a number of production environments. 

A note of caution if you are publishing your Visio web pages to a SharePoint environment make sure that you check in and publish not just save the changes to your frameset.js file.   If you don’t publish the file (if you have publishing/approvals turned on) then the users will see only the previous version of the file that does not reflect the changes you made.

Visio also creates files that a desktop search engine can index. So if I want to find the page with the Scott #200 layout I can just search for it. It makes life a lot easier now that I’ve got over 700 pages in the ‘Library’.

The Visio program itself is an engineering type drawing program more geared to diagrams than a paint or Photoshop alternative. As you can see in the layout below, it comes with the usual drawing grid and guidelines and the tool bars and menu items one expects to see in programs of this sort today.

Visio’s most unique feature is a set of literally hundreds of pre-defined drawing items organized into stencils. The ‘Basic Shapes’ stencil is view is shown. Using a stencil you can drag and drop a particular type of object onto your drawing and then adjust its size, color, line weight, and even add text.

The tabs along the bottom of the screen show the various pages inside the overall drawing file. In this case, the file is the collection of over 40 album pages covering 1900-29 issues. Being able to keep them all together and reorganize at will is very convenient.

The following image shows an album page without the stencil in view and expanded to 200% of printing size. Zooming in on objects and aligning them precisely is a key part of Visio’s appeal, as is its ability to embed pictures and other files generated outside the program.

The dotted line vertical in the right center of the page is an alignment guideline. Visio will let you automatically snap items to the grid itself or to the guideline. You can also glue items to a guideline, and they’ll move if the line moves.

For most of my work, the snap-to-grid method works well, as does Visio’s ability to line up a series of selected objects by clicking on each one and then selecting a shape tool for aligning them.

This happened on a client workstation that could save without issue to his local drive but not to any of the network drives.

The explanation from Microsoft is that these errors are caused ‘when a user’s network permissions are incompatible with the permissions that Visio needs in order to save files.’

As I wasn’t able to replicate this problem elsewhere I was not quite sure what actual permission Visio requires.

I found a retired Microsoft KB article that related to a similar problem with Visio 2000.

To resolve this issue in Visio 2000 and 2003

· Open Visio 2003 and go to Tools then click Options and click the Advanced tab.

Check the ‘Put all settings in the Windows registry’ box and click OK.

The Microsoft help function states that enabling this option

‘Adds all possible application settings into the Windows registry. By default, only certain settings are added (nondefault settings and very few others, such as file paths, import and export filters, and last files) to keep the registry settings simple.’

· Open up the registry (Start>Run> Regedit) and click OK

Locate the following registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER’Software’Microsoft’Office’11.0’Visio’Application

· In the right hand pane double click NetFlags and change its value from 0 to 3. Click ‘OK’ and exit the Registry Editor

For Visio 2000 the registry key is:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER’Software’Visio’Visio 2000’Application

· Open Visio and try to amend or create a drawing and save it to a network drive to see if the problem is resolved.
