Each and every day one ought to make a crucial decision whether to be in service of peace, hope and healing or to be in service of war, aggression and conflict. This May 2013 I am going to lead a group of my fans and supporters on a tour of Israel to meet the peace makers - the Jewish and Arabic educators and the artists who cross boundaries to raise the human spirit above borders and sow the seeds of peace. We will make music and break bread with the Bedouins of the Azazme tribe in the desert, party with the fabulous food and music of the Jewish Bukhari drummers of the Alaev Family, attend exclusive events with some of the greatest world music masters of Israel, such as Yair Dalal, and visit the historical and sacred sites of the Holly Land. Based on my intimate knowledge of Israel, I can say that the next 12 months will be a time for rebuilding, re evaluating and re organizing. No one is expecting security issues in the coming months. Things are quiet in Israel now. We are expecting that it will be quiet in May June when our musical-cultural tour will take place. It will be a time to strengthen the people who nurture the foundation to a peaceful joint-venture future, to support them so they would present an alternative, a real strong alternative to the violence. The musicians, artists, educators are eager to meet with us in May June. I am in touch with them, and they are looking forward to being with us,

The goal of our tour is to strengthen the courageous people in Israel who are creating trust, understanding, common culture and joint ventures for Arabs and Jews a a foundation for future peace solution.

When you arrive at the souk make sure you remember which door you went in, as there are many entrances to the souk (around 21 ) so if you go in one entrance but come out of another one you may find yourself a bit lost. Also inside the souk itself it all looks the same so take a long look at something that stands out near your entrance so it is easier to find it when you want to leave.
Things to remember:
- remember your entrance number
- haggle away, once you have bought something ask around and if you find a cheaper price somewhere else go back to the stall you bought it from and tell them you should then get the cheaper price

A very nice place to shop in Agadir is called Le Medina d’Agadir Cocco Polizzi. It was built by an Italian architect who felt that Agadir should have a medina after the entire city was destroyed in an earthquake in the early 1960′s. The medina has a bus that goes to the major hotels and transports you to the medina which is located about 10 minutes from the downtown area. You are buying products from the actual people who are making them. You can watch craftsmen make leather shoes, loom scarfs, wooden boxes, stone carvings, etc. The prices are generally fixed, most of the shop owners give discounts if asked. Again, what you find here is very genuine (unlike in a lot of the other shops in town where it looks genuine, but in many cases isn’t even made in Morocco). The medina also has a lovely snack bar run by two Moroccan women who will provide you a lunch for a very reasonable price. The medina charges a small entry fee (about 2 euros) which ensures that local hasslers stay out. It was built for tourists and offers some of the cutest boutiques in the country for shopping. Just ask at your hotel for the Medina of Cocco Polizzi. They’ll know how to get to it.

There might be a lot to do at night in Agadir, in Summer, but in Winter, this is not the case. Take a leisurely stroll along the seaside terrace, with sounds of the surf to one side, and sounds of laughter, friends, and enjoyment on the other (in Summer) Starting at Gasaa Square, follow your ears to sounds of fun, or your nose to smells of food. The terrace is lined with cafes, bars, and possibly a nightclub that might keep revelers reveling until the wee hours of the morning. In Winter though, the cafe’s and restaurants are not too popular, which is a shame as one of them, Le Nile Bleu, had two very talented locals singing each night. You can also sit with the locals in the square and listen to the music/signing in another restaurant, and watch people stroll by. After this, unless you find a casino or nightclub, there isn’t anything else to do.

There are also family-friendly restaurants along the terrace, where the kids can get ice cream cones, or everyone can try their taste buds at some traditional Moroccan cuisine. Find a cafe chair or bench along the terrace and people-watch in the early evening, or make new friends. If you are a couple, then it should be OK to sit and “make new friends”. However, if you are single, then, those new friends are likely to be the ones who are paid hourly for their services! The abundance of tourists to this location appears to have attracted prostitutes (of both sexes) to the area, hoping to service the toursist’s every need!

Downtown Agadir has its share of nightspots, too, but these tend to be on the higher end of the cover-charge scale. Overall, there is no dress code among night visitors, as a high premium is placed on comfort and relaxation. Sportsbars feature popular evening football matches on their big screens.

Oftentimes, the very hotel you’re staying at offers nightime diversion, with traditional Moroccan music and festive dancers in colors and bangles. Be brave and try a few steps along with them.

Kinnor is the Hebrew word for harp. The Sea of Galilee is shaped like a huge harp, and that is possibly how its name in Hebrew was first coined, “Kinneret.” Most say the body of water looks smaller in real life than what they pictured in their minds while reading the Bible.

Honestly, I think after reading in general — most of life in real time seems “smaller.” Books plus imagination equals grandiose thoughts, ideas, images, and plans.

God gave us such marvelous imaginations. We have this fantastic ability to dream, a gift straight from the mind and heart of our Creator because we are fashioned from His own image. It is such a quicken thought to imagine Jesus Himself as a dreamer.

I am constantly disappointed by what I see in reality because of the verve and creativity bumping around in my head. Creativity does make the world go round.

With that said, the Son Man — who is also the Son of God, Jesus or Yeshua in Hebrew — does not disappoint. The love toward humankind, miracles, outstretched hands of compassion that He showed on the banks of the Galilee are bigger than life and better than anyone could imagine.

One of the towns on the shores of the Kinnert is Capernaum, used by Yeshua for His public ministry in the region and later cursed by Him for not receiving His teachings and miracles. In Hebrew, it means simply town of Nahum; although it is not considered to be named after the prophet Nahum. The old fishing village sets on the north of the Sea of Galilee, serene in location, and is saturated with glorious sunlight during the day. The ancient stony, carved ruins gleam with illumination on many levels — leading us to the significant events of yesteryear.

Standing among Capernaum’s rubble, it is easy to imagine Jesus walking arm-in-arm with Peter and Andrew along dusty, rocky pathways. Several disciples came from this place and knew it well. It is natural to envision the Master standing in the local synagogue of the day, expounding on truths that prick the hearts of modern men who flock to its ruins from around the world to inspect the fallen, broken stones and hear the old stories of the ancient town of miracles.

Although just a ruin, Capernaum is still called the town of Jesus.

The Gospels tell us that after Jesus returned from His temptation in the wilderness,
Capernaum was the first place that He taught. The people were astounded at His impartation and authority. It was here that Peter’s mother-in-law was healed from a fever, the centurion’s child delivered from an illness by Jesus’ word alone, the paralytic lowered through the roof to be touched by the Master; and from here, Jesus climbed into a simple fishing boat to calm the seas and winds of a sudden storm.

It is intriguing that among Capernaum’s ruins were found Stars of David engraved in stone as well as a seven-branched menorahs and an image of the Ark of the Covenant. It shows these important Jewish symbols are indeed very ancient and will continue to be significant in the days ahead to those who have ears to hear and eyes to see the Jesus, the Jewish Messiah. The carvings on the ancient stones are the fingerprints of Jesus. He left them there to help us believe, to show us the way.

These dead relics still radiate the heat and power of His life force that could not be left in the ground, but burst open in life on the third day after His unjust and cruel crucifixion on Golgotha. He went there willing, yet it was unjust. His blood still cries from the ground. And one day, he will even the score. Not with flesh and blood; but with the enemies of God.

4th-Century Synagogue*

The ruins of a 4th-Century synagogue are bleached brilliantly white by constant over-exposure to the Mediterranean sunshine and are made of ornately carved, limestone. In its day, the luminescent stone contrasted severely with the rest of the village which was made of black basalt stone, layered and fitted together without mortar.

It is very significant that the ruins beneath these gleaming white ones of the synagogue are black basalt stone as well and probably date back to the time period of Jesus. Many scholars agree that Jesus probably taught from this very place. In fact, some suggest that possible four or five synagogues have rested on this same spot through the centuries. One may have been converted for use by early Christians, who were indeed Jews by birth, lifestyle, and practice.

Columns line the synagogue.

I wrote the following short poem while on a visit to Capernaum.

Having never gone to Israel before, I talked to people for advice. I heard comments ranging from – ‘I hope you’re packing a Kevlar Vest.’ to ‘You get to breathe in the same air as Jesus? What I wouldn’t do to be able to experience that.’

Although we will not be trying to walk on water or reenact the Jonah story, we will get to swim with dolphins, float in the Dead Sea, hike, shoot arrows in the desert, hike some more and take a Camel trek. All good, clean fun in the Promise Land.

Stay tuned for daily reports of Adventures in Israel…

Nephi and the Brass Plates has just been remastered and released for its 25th anniversary. Will you tell us about how you came to create these animated films?

When talking about our animated films we have to mention our first ten years. The beginning of Living Scriptures started with selling audio dramatized cassettes. Two years prior to Orrin Hatch becoming senator, we licensed the rights from him for a series on the Old Testament, but I was never satisfied with their quality. As time went on with that dissatisfaction we finally decided to create a whole new library of dramatized productions. We worked on seven series for 10 years, and they are still products loved by people. Little did we know that the process of developing these dramatizations was preparing us for creating the animated movies.

In 1985, we realized people were turning toward buying videos, and it was difficult to figure out how to get into that because the production cost was over 70 times that of the dramatizations. The first films we did was a tour of Israel with the great Mormon scholar, W. Cleon Skousen, who passed away five years ago.

After we did the Visit Israel films, a man from Hanna-Barbera approached an individual in the Church’s audio/video department to sell the Hanna-Barbera bible stories they had recently animated. That individual said the Church couldn’t really help him, but that he should talk to the president of Living Scriptures. So he sent them to me. After we started working with them to sell the Hanna-Barbera products we found that the Latter-day Saints really liked them, but I felt the biblical accuracy was poor, just like before with the dramatized tapes we first licensed. I didn’t like how they combined fiction and time travel with the scriptures; they just didn’t have good accuracy. I remember telling Joe Barbera, the head of Hanna-Barbera, that it could be done better than this. They looked at me like, “We’re Hanna-Barbera! We know a little more about this than you do. We have a standard that works and there is no way we’d go outside of that.”

Anyway, that began the discussion with Joe Barbera, who must have been in his 80s, about creating the kind of stories we wanted to be told. When he put the numbers on the table, he wanted $600,000 per episode plus 20% of the sales and wanted to own the asset. We were deflated; there was no way we could make that work. I figured that they were the only company we could use, so we thought the idea was dead. But, my friend Lex de Azevedo, who we’d worked with on several music projects, mentioned to me that a friend of his, Richard Rich, had just left Disney after 14 years there. So I got a hold of Rick Rich and we set up a meeting. This was an afterthought because I figured a feature film animator couldn’t possibly meet the smaller budgets for creating the Animated Book of Mormon. But after meeting with Joe Barbera and hearing his proposal, it was worth a try.

The meeting with Rick left us with enormous questions about how a former Disney Producer with budgets in the tens of millions could meet our budgets in the hundreds of thousands. We couldn’t take such a tremendous gamble on someone who had never even worked with Han Ho, the animation studio in Korea. He couldn’t even guarantee that the budgets would be met.
In the end a lucky thing happened on our way to the airport. I had made up my mind that we weren’t going to do the animations because the questions were too big. Our driver ended up driving past the Burbank studio of Han Ho. As we were going past the studio, Rick says, “By the way that’s the Han Ho studio.” I didn’t realize they had a presence in Burbank. I say, “Let’s turn around and go in for a tour.” Rick let me know that they wouldn’t let us in because they were working on a feature. I told him, “Let’s go back and see if they’ll let us in.” When we arrived I asked for the head of production, and lo and behold, he’s also LDS. So he let us in, and that’s when I realized that they had enough assets here that they could carry forth a contract and that we could make our dream happen. Later, I found out that our driver was totally lost. If we hadn’t passed the studio we would have probably got on the airplane and our animations never would have happened.

We made the decision to go forward — which was a huge decision — failure would have meant bankruptcy. As soon as we released the first title, Nephi and the Brass Plates, we thought the market would be much, much more receptive. We were delusional to think we could have sold as many videos as we thought we would. The average production cost was about $500,000 per video or $800–900K for each episode today.

We had also decided to start The Animated New Testament series starting with The King is Born for release at the same time. As a side note about The King is Born: This great classic has been played to millions and the number of languages it’s in is unbelievable. When the Iron Curtain fell, there were people on a Christian TV station, Dayspring, that worked with the 700 Club who took The King is Born and He is Risen into Russia. It was like the first Christian product that had been played there in 70 years and it exposed millions of people in Russia to the stories of Jesus in the New Testament.

So when we started doing the Animated New Testament and Animated Book of Mormon, we initially planned on doing six movies of each. As we started we expected sales to materialize at a fast enough rate to pay for the production costs. That didn’t happen. As we continued production we were getting more and more in debt—to the tune of about 5 million dollars. At that point no one would loan us more money, and they stopped believing that it was financially working — which it wasn’t. This was a real point of desperation about the end of 1987. I thought the whole thing was going to come apart and we’d be bankrupt.

I was pleading with heaven every day that we could keep things going, and the most amazing thing of my entire life happened: Someone wanted to buy our other company that we had started in 1976, known today as Convergys. Out of the clear blue Cincinnati Bell sought us out for purchase and within six weeks time we went from owing 5 million to having 27 million dollars in our hand. We didn’t even seek the sale; they sought us out. It was beyond amazing. Another thing that was a big factor was my partner from the beginning, Seldon Young, worked out the details and negotiated with them. That funding let us complete what we were creating but also allowed us to do more stories from the Book of Mormon and New Testament. It also allowed us to create a huge library of products including 12 Animated Old Testament and 20 Animated Hero Classics titles. It opened up a huge opportunity.

Today we had a little “discussion” over where we should be going for holidays. To be more precise, Vincent was voting for Shangri-La as the “must-go” destination while I was voicing out my numerous concerns for NOT going.

In the end it just ended up being a monologue on improving our communication blah blah blah…

Later in the day, I was thinking over my reason for not wanting to go Shangri-La (previously known as Zhongdian, China). I made a trip up there when I was about 19, loved the place absolutely for its mishmash of tribal groups, its scenery, rough roads etc. Since then I’ve re-located it to a place in the back of my mind and to the lower ranks of travel destinations.

I dug deeper into my dream vault and I uncovered my longing to go Israel.

Especially more so since this is the Year of the Perfection of the Divine Order. For us, for the people of Israel, and for our work field.

The Bible says that whoever blesses Israel, God will bless back in return. I definitely want to reap that kind of blessings.

In Feb, Ps George Annadorai had invited us missionaries to join him in his Oct 10th project to bless the survivors of the Holecaust in Israel. I remember clearly him saying that we will see the things that our hands touch thereafter reaping productivity up to 10x as much.

In my heart of hearts, I want, covet and desire that for the nation of Thailand.

That somehow in our elusive task as “envoys” on behalf of Thailand, God will in His benevolence notice and remember us & the untold faceless, nameless people who have toiled in the soils of Thailand. That in these last days, He will pour out His blessings and caused His name to be permanently wedged in the public and social consciousness of the Thai people.

Digressing slightly, I ask myself, what is the span of a person’s life? Maybe 80 if you’re healthy/ blessed. Or perhaps 40, even 60.

It is my hope that my life together with my husband’s, will have a lasting legacy not just for our children but the others to come, even the newer generations of other nations. That they will know that the Lord is good, that He is the reason why we toil so. Amen and amen.

O Lord, let us go to Israel this year!!! Hahaha, so it’s boiled down to this one request. I feel like I’m slightly “manipulating” God, twisting His emotional arm to get what I want.

And look what I found when I was having my devotion this morning?

An old bookmark from Israel a friend had given me. Very rustic feel to it…

Interested in developing your ability to BE more in the present moment and quieten the constant chatter going on in the mind ? Then take a few minutes to read on, a wonderful opportunity awaits.

The delightful Jivan Sunder, a highly acclaimed Gurdjieff Movements teacher will be in Israel to lead a Gurdjieff Movements Workshop in the beautiful 4000 year old city of Acre (akko) September 12-13th 2008. The course will be in English.

During the weekend workshop, whilst learning 4-5 of these simple and immensely graceful movements, participants have an opportunity gain insight into the strategies of their personality. ‘Personalities are often precisely mirrored in the individuals approach to working with the movements’ says Jivan. ‘Its an interesting and very profound experience to begin to know one self from this perspective.’

‘Working together, we learn to become aware of the energy within us that motivates the movements and can then witness the energy in action. With a greater sense of presence, feelings of harmony between body mind and emotions are created which naturally enhance ones grace.’

Who is Gurdjieff and What are the Movements? (excerpts from Jivan’s website)

‘Gurdjieff Movements are the work of enlightened Armenian mystical artist and teacher, George Gurdjieff (1870-1949).

Gurdjieff created the Movements as part of his teaching system, basing them on various religious dances and rituals he saw while travelling throughout Asia.

He created each of the movements, of which there are over 150, as exercises to develop in his students what he called ‘presence of being’ – being present – being completely aware of the present moment & not slave to the unconscious mind.

With the focus on being in the present moment, the movements, unlike most dance forms today which are a purely artistic/aesthetic experience, are more concerned with the spiritual/mystical experience, to bring about a higher state of consciousness and awareness. Hence the dance becomes a meditation’

Gurdjieff Workshop Leader Jivan

The Indian Mystic Osho considered the Armenian mystics dance movements extremely effective in encouraging a deep movement towards the source, towards the centre of being and towards greater consciousness.

The September workshop is a great opportunity to get away from the hustle and bustle of life for a weekend, learn something new and enjoy the peacefulness and beauty of ancient Acre (akko).

It was exactly one of these glorious life surprises that has lead to me living in thriving, vibrant, never sleeping, full power, delicious and never enough moments in the day to do everything TLV!!

Its very exciting to find oneself living in argueably one of the sexiest cities on the planet?

Tel Aviv is magical. Its incredibly alive & full with outrageousness. Its chic, vibrant, colourful, full on and well… I simply adore it.

I plan to share tel aviv with you…little by little. As I become more intimate with her, as I learn more of her as I discover her, I will share with you her treasures and unique gifts. You will come to know her smells, sounds, talents and energy.

But this takes time, for she is mysterious. She is much much more than you can imagine, so much more that you can discover in one visit or one glance at this blog .

Tel Aviv is addictive. Once is never enough. Tel Aviv will grab you, lure you and entice you and I consider it a great honour to help create your addiction. I look forward to it.

until your next visit. be well and be happy.
