One of my favorite gifts this holiday season was an iPod Touch. For the past couple of years, I

One of my favorite gifts this holiday season was an iPod Touch. For the past couple of years, I’ve been a Zune fan, however two broken Zunes have shown me the right way. I may be paranoid, but I’m assuming that when my Mac user friend said “He won’t know what to do with something that works all the time,” he may have been referring to Microsoft products. So, not owning a Mac, I did quite a bit of research concerning bugs in Apple products. If I go out and buy a Mac, will it work all the time, or will I still have a few minor issues now and then? I can’t say for sure whether or not I personally would have a problem, however here are a few things I found.
Many Apple Remote issues
Plex issues
Disk utilities crashes
Problems installing on Macbook Pro
iStat problems
Pro audio with iChat problems
Problems installing on older Macbooks
Deletion of all user data (HUGE uh-oh)

Along with these bugs, many people found many combality issues with their software and external hardware. When I installed Windows 7, the only compatibility problem I had was with my printer, so I spent about 15 minutes finding a driver on the internet. So, I wouldn’t say that an Apple product would work all the time, however I am typing this entire article on my iPod because Internet Explorer decided not to work right today (I’ll write a followup post on why I’m actually using IE soon). Both OSs have their problems, so it’s really just a matter of which has more. Looking at that list and others that I found online, I feel proud to own a PC.

Been running Windows 7 on my laptop for a few days now and it’s a HUGE improvement over Vista. Best of all, it actually works and is even pretty responsive (most of the time).

A Windows 7/Ubuntu Karmic Koala dual-boot is a beautiful thing after putting up with Vista.

—

I’m thinking maybe I should do something different with this blog in the near future. i.e. Maybe actually write every once in a while, I’m sure I’ve said that before, but at some point it’s going to happen. Hopefully.

With Tomato Garden XP allegedly deployed to over 10 million users in China, one has to ask the question, isn't that what Microsoft wanted?

and a look at a new distro which aims to appeal to the Windows XP market with consideration of a recent ruling that has an XP “pirate” hit with a fine and jail.

Its a question Ive asked time and time again on this blog. There are many sites reporting the new Ubuntu derived distro which aims to appeal to the Windows XP user. I will cover that more towards the end of the article but for me, this poses other questions in regards to the view Microsoft seemed to have in respect of XP, the future of Microsoft with it’s recent products and the question – what is Microsoft most frightened of?

Lets rewind to August 2008 when the people responsible for China’s most popular “cracked” version of Windows XP were arrested….

For those that don’t know, the version of XP in question was called Tomato Garden Windows XP and contained other full versions of software (cracked if you will) which could be downloaded for free. And downloaded it was. Reports state that approximately 10 million people took the opportunity to get their hands on this unofficial, unauthorised Microsoft product.

Skip nearer to present day and on August 20th 2009 a judgment was reached by the Suzhou Huqiu District Court which saw the maker of Tomato Garden XP hit with a $147,000 fine and a three and a half year term of imprisonment.

Before we look at this further, let’s remind ourselves of what Bill Gates had to say about “piracy” in China. The following quote comes from Bill Gates in 2007, you can read an article on that here.

Although about 3 million computers get sold every year in China, people don’t pay for the software. Someday they will, though……And as long as they’re going to steal it, we want them to steal ours. They’ll get sort of addicted, and then we’ll somehow figure out how to collect sometime in the next decade.

It appears he has been true to his word. Its nearly 2010, 10 million people are seemingly “addicted” to Tomato Garden and sure enough Microsoft seems to be collecting. Whilst I cannot and will not condone the “sharing” of material without the IP holders consent, does anyone see anything wrong with the way Microsoft have apparently been happy to let people “become addicted”? Microsoft cannot be holier than thou (IMO) in regards to “theft” of code since its alleged that (albeit by a 3rd party contracted by Microsoft) they have done the same thing and it seemed a year before Bill Gates was more than happy for people to “steal ours” (his words). Is this not at best entrapment?

I think we are all agreed you can’t “steal” code in the traditional sense, but for want of a better word, lets look for a minute at theft as defined in Section 1 of the Theft Act 1968 (UK Law)

A person is guilty of theft if he dishonestly appropriates property belonging to another with the intention of permanently depriving the other of it; and “thief” and “steal” shall be construed accordingly.

So by listening to Bill Gates in 2007, one could be forgiven for thinking that the “dishonest appropriation” element is absent from the “stealing” afterall Bill Gates said “we want them to steal ours” ergo no dishonesty, Bill Gates want’s you to steal it. Taking this to a rather OTT extreme, one could also consider that the creator of Tomato Garden had a defense (of sorts) there. This is, as I say, OTT, but for me highlights the hypocrisy of Microsoft.

Of course all this to me is really a moot point when you consider that Microsoft have already given XP a stay of execution and even in light of the fact its two versions behind the current product, people still want to keep using it. Is this what Microsoft is most frightened of? People’s reluctance to move to what MS is offering today? Maybe for many Windows users it’s nice to run an MS OS where your hardware exceeds the requirements of the OS itself and not find themselves in the middle of a performance battle which traditionally (IMO) was a combination of compromise and hardware upgrade.

It looks like XP but its derived from Ubuntu. I don't think Microsoft will be best pleased with a Gnome? replica of their GUI.

Here comes Ylmf OS!

With a name that rolls off the tongue? Ylmf OS appears to the casual user as XP. Currently the Ubuntu based distro has no English translation. What does this mean for Microsoft? Well if it becomes the “protest choice” of China then quite alot, its got a 10 million strong user base to attract. You can visit the website of this distro here and I would ask if anyone knows of either a translation for the distro itself and/or the homepage, please let me know!

A threat to Microsoft?

I have a some questions in regards to XP, firstly why on the eve of the Windows 7 beta did the arrests occur of the Tomato Garden creator? Why when XP is such old software (two versions behind 7 which Microsoft seem to tout as the second coming of operating systems) did Microsoft want to actively persue this XP clone? What does Windows 7 offer which is not already offered by a smaller (and less hardware demanding XP) but most important of all, if people are being pursued now for products as old as XP, what does that say about Microsoft’s latest products and their confidence in them?

These are questions which only XP users reluctant to upgrade can answer. In the meantime, I don’t think it will be long before a translation of Ylmf is available and you can bet Microsoft will be looking very closely at its options in regards to the GUI having an almost identical look to XP, even if it is Ubuntu derived.

If I had not “upgraded” to Vista from XP, I would probably not be writing a Linux blog. It was my utter dissatisfaction with Vista that caused me to look elsewhere, which now in hindsight was the best thing I ever did. As I come to the end of a long testing/review of Windows 7, I am left none the wiser as to what Windows can now offer me (that review will be here in the new year)

Maybe 2010 will be the year of the Linux desktop? Starting in China albeit with a clone of XP? – The mind boggles! What a wacky digital world we live in!

Here we are, another year ends by and the dawn of a new year!!. We all look back each year to see what went wrong more than what went right, to make sure it is done right the year after, so I thought let me end my blog this year with “times when IT cos said sorry in 2009″, some funny, some foolish, some unwanted, whatever read on for some interesting and funny mistakes ,,, this year we saw several big IT giants issue regret letters after public outcry. Internet search giant Google had to apologise more than once in 2009, Microsoft too had to say sorry on charges of racial discrimination. The list included many other big names too. Here’s where and why technology companies issued public apology in 2009.

Tech Sorry - ravikanthl.co.cc

1) Gmail goes offline, Google goes red-faced

Even this year we saw Google’s Gmail continue its march on the growth track. However, as Gmail grew, so seemed to be the woes for its users. The year saw Gmail services getting disrupted several times, sometimes these outages were regional while on other occasions global. Consequently, the search giant Google had to often extend apology to its sea of users for the inconvenience suffered.

The latest outage occurred in September. According to the company, the outage saw Gmail going offline for a “majority” of its email users, including its paid consumers. Earlier in May, millions of people were cut off from Google’s search engine, e-mail and other online services after too much traffic was routed through computers in Asia. About 14 per cent of Google’s users encountered problems with the Internet’s No. 1 search engine.
The frequent outages made analysts wonder if Gmail is getting too unwieldy for the search giant to manage.

2) Microsoft repents ‘photo editing’

Software giant Microsoft found itself at the end of a racism row forcing it to tender an apology. The software leader apparently altered a photo in a company advertisement on its website to change the race of one of the people shown in the picture. A photo on the company’s US website showed two men, one Asian and one black, and a white woman seated at a conference room table. However, on the website of Microsoft’s Polish business unit, the black man’s head was replaced with that of a white man. The colour of his hand remained unchanged, this was really funny, not at least for the tech part but the culture they adopt.

3) Google sorry again, this time for first lady

Don’t worry where’s Microsoft there’s Google, Internet search giant’s image results recently created a stir when it was pointed out that the image results for US first lady Michelle Obama showed a racist image in the top results. The image search result which showed Michelle Obama as a monkey women was later removed by Google.

Google also apologised for the image. In a statement, the company said, “Sometimes Google search results from the Internet can include disturbing content, even from innocuous queries.” “We assure you that the views expressed by such sites are not in any way endorsed by Google,” the statement added. Google also ran several advertisements to explain the appearance of racist and anti-Semitic material in its search results.

4) Vista a mistake: Microsoft CEO

I did try there beta versions earlier and my first thought, what a flop Microsoft, Over the years, Vista has witnessed criticism from several quarters. However, for the first time the operating system was laughed off by none other than the company’s CEO itself, just like me heheheh

Ahead of the launch of its new operating system Windows 7 in October, Microsoft laughed at Windows Vista which according to its CEO tarnished the company’s reputation. At an event, Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer said that the company never recovered from the poor performance of Vista. Ballmer was qouted as saying, “We got some uneven reception when [Vista] first launched in large part because we made some design decisions to improve security at the expense of compatibility. I don’t think from a word-of-mouth perspective we ever recovered from that.” Good words there from our tech mammoths, what about those who are still using Vista

5) Apple sorry for Baby Shaker app

I told you there is every reason which will make you sorry for, Apple stirred almost anything on there i-Phones isn’t, this time they stirred the wrong one.. Just three days after launch, Apple pulled the plug on its Baby Shaker app. The application was pulled following a strong protest from child advocacy groups who termed the app highly offensive.

The 99-cent application created by Sikalosoft allowed users to silence a virtual screaming baby by violently shaking the iPhone. The app description showed, “Never, never shake a baby.” It also advised, “See how long you can endure his or her adorable cries before you just have to find a way to quiet the baby down.” In a statement Apple apologised for allowing Baby Shaker into the iTunes store, and said, “This application was deeply offensive and should not have been approved for distribution on the App Store.” There you go, Apple..

6) Amazon apologises for Kindle book deletions

In July this year, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos issued an apology over a surprise deletion of books that Kindle owners had purchased and downloaded to their devices.

Bezos apologised in a posting on the Kindle Community forum for the deletion of two books, George Orwell’s Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-Four, explaining that the company will be changing its policy in the future.

“This is an apology for the way we previously handled illegally sold copies of Nineteen Eighty-Four and other novels on Kindle,” “Our ’solution’ to the problem was stupid, thoughtless and painfully out of line with our principles. It is wholly self-inflicted, and we deserve the criticism we’ve received. We will use the scar tissue from this painful mistake to help make better decisions going forward, ones that match our mission.”

7) VMware says sorry to Microsoft

Here is another Sorry man, VMware’s Scott Drummonds apologied to Microsoft after posting a YouTube video that misled viewers on the reliability of Microsoft’s Hyper-V.

The video showed Microsoft Hyper-V crashing while running VMware’s VMmark platform. The video also implied that Hyper-V crashes caused April’s massive TechNet and MSDN outages. Scott Drummonds’ apology reads, “The video was a bit hyperbolic in its dramatization of Hyper-V’s reliability. Unfortunately, my intention to stir the pot with eye-poking banter has put my credibility and by association VMware’s credibility in question among some of you. … We will absolutely work our best to live up to the high standard you’ve come to expect from us. And when we mess up, we’ll be the first to address the mistake head on.”

 Yahoo apologises for lap dance

The Climax ends with lap dance story from Yahoo, In October 2009, Yahoo apologised to its Taiwanese clients over a lap dance show organised during its brainstorming meeting for Internet engineers in Taipei.

The rare move came after girls wearing bras and miniskirts performed in front of male participants seated on stage during an event that was part of a Yahoo Hack Day, where developers work on creating new web applications. Chris Yeh, head of the Yahoo Developer Network said in a statement, “This incident is regrettable and we apologise to anyone that we have offended.” Heck we all missed that Yahoo Hack Day..

That all folk for this year, Mistakes are everywhere who cares them now a days unless u own one seriously Hope you have a great and SORRY-less 2010 year, Catch you in 2009, Ooops SORRY, that’s my last SORRY this year, Catch you in 2010 …

While I wrote an article about Windows 7, bit I searched the internet and asked for more information

While I wrote an article about Windows 7, bit I searched the internet and asked for more information. Seeking, I found one very useful thing … Microsoft has launched a new Twitter account @microsofthelps, that offers customer support for Windows 7 users. If you have any problems, you can write to twitter, and there is a great likelihood that you will get a solution to your problem.

New things in Windows 7

1.
All of you who use computers are certainly at least once by now heard of DirectX. It is a collection of application programming interfaces (APIs) for handling tasks related to multimedia, especially game programming and video, on Microsoft platforms.
After a long wait, Windows 7 is installed DirectX 11th
To better understand what the word is, here’s video

2.
Windows 7 adds several cool, new desktop personalization features. Whether it’s tweaking your color or Aero Glass Subscribing to an RSS feed for new wallpaper images, customization is easier than it ever has been on Windows.

3.
There is a new Calculator, WordPad, and Paint.

4.
For me, one of the best solutions that Microsoft created a way to connect on Wi-Fi networks. This solution is much more help to connect on broadbend internet and wi-fi network via laptop.
Click on the Wi-Fi adapter in your system tray to pop up a menu of available wireless networks. From there you can refresh the list, and choose the one you want to connect to in one click
You can switch between Wi-Fi networks in one click from the system tray.

5.
The single biggest complaint about Windows Vista was its User Account Control’s incessant, nagging, pop-up dialogs that would ask you if you were absolutely sure you wanted to do the thing you just told the computer to do. In the name of security, Vista would not even check if this strange and scary program called Notepad was ok to run: While legions of Vista users would sacrifice the well-intentioned security that User Account Control offered by turning it off completely just to get their sanity back, in Windows 7 you can fine-tune the level of nags, warnings, and confirmation prompts you get. Click the thumbnail to see the UAC slider fine-tuner built into Windows 7.

There are many things to write, but I need more time to a little of everything written. But some new things I have to mention:

- No more sidebar, the gadget can post wherever you want;
- Notebook owners will be thrilled to know that Windows 7 promises to run more efficiently and thus longer on battery;
- You can instantly snap your windows to size, and clear the desktop in one motion;
- Windows 7 starts up faster.

‘Twas the night before Christmas and all through the tower
Much talk was occurring about the struggle for power.

Windows 7 was painted with bright Christmas themes
And the taskbar was frost to fulfill Christmas dreams.

But though everything seemed filled with joy
The anti-Christmas viruses had just been deployed.

The system was running at full CPU.
The entire computer was feeling quite blue.

But just as everything seemed at its worst,
Saint Norton arrived to relieve the strange curse.

It fought really hard, after the update of course.
The small weakend viruses would return to their source.

Saint Norton proclaimed, “Let there be no fright!
Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!

The procedure is pretty much like you do in Windows XP, but in Windows Vista, you can do it in many ways – and they are much easier.

Simplest way – Select and Right click on the Font(s) you want to install and select Install from the context menu that appear. Your font will be instaled if it is right for Windows Vista. But it will confirm your acceptance by asking you through user account control pop up window. Simply click on Continue, and you are done.

The other way – Open Control panel, swith to Classic View by clicking on Classic View button on the top left corner of Contrlo panel Window. Open Fonts folder and then right click on an empty space on its right pan where fonts are listed. Install New Fonts… context menu will appear. Clikc on it and then browse to Fonts folder for the fonts you want to install and click Install button after selecting from the available fonts list, and you are done.

When I got Windows Vista, I was pretty sure it was love at first sight. I absolutely loved everythin

When I got Windows Vista, I was pretty sure it was love at first sight. I absolutely loved everything about it. It may have been because I had a good system that was capable of running it well. When Windows 7 came out, I was absolutely amazed with everything. It is honestly the fastest PC I’ve ever run. Vista and 7 are both what Microsoft considers minor upgrades. Evolutionary steps to the next OS. What has been codenamed Windows 8 will be what Microsoft considers a revolutionary upgrade. Something that will totally change a user’s experience (hopefully for the better). There have so far been many rumors spreading around including a rumor stating that Windows 8 will offer 128-bit support (though Microsoft has now denied this).

I’ve recently been questioning what exactly a Mac has on a PC. Mac ships with iLife, which contains many features such as iPhoto, iMovie, and iWeb. But programs such as these are found on a PC as well, either pre-installed or via Windows Live or third party software. Macs don’t typically get viruses. That is something that PC has lagged a bit on. Though PCs don’t have much of a chance of getting viruses, there is still a MUCH higher chance of a PC getting viruses than a Mac. It’s been said that this is only because there are way less Mac users than PC users, therefore there are more people to create and be infected by viruses. But, that should be no excuse. I think that Microsoft should create something that I’ve come to think of as the System Monitor. I think it should monitor every bit of information transferred by internet needs to be monitored constantly. I think that the system should constantly be scanning the hard drive for anything that may be a threat. The hard part would be creating a tool that wouldn’t use very many system resources.

I think eliminating viruses would be the perfect revolutionary feature for a revolutionary upgrade. What I’ve mentioned is simply a rough sketch in my mind. I’m confident that Microsoft can create a similar tool with better functionality that will truly change the user experience.

Those of you who are in love with the Console2’s interesting feats, but on windows sometimes fall into ditches, as usual, here is a problem I ran into before doing the following twick.

I installed the console in a windows box, but couldn’t see its menu, neither it’s toolbar! Tried to find any related issues by googling online but now help.

At last I thought, let me have a look into the console.xml which contains the runtime configurations. And I found this:

<controls show_menu=“0” show_toolbar=“0” show_statusbar=“0” show_tabs=“1” hide_single_tab=“0” show_scrollbars=“0”/>

Bingo! Just what I was looking for. The Console started functioning normal again after I have changed the above to the following:

<controls show_menu=“1” show_toolbar=“1” show_statusbar=“1” show_tabs=“1” hide_single_tab=“1” show_scrollbars=“1”/>

Voila!
Hope this helps those who may need it in a hurry

On the search I found these invaluable articles in different sites. Have a look you might find something more interesting there

Want to have more control over the sounds coming out of your Windows Vista system? Start by clicking the volume icon in the Vista taskbar, which pops up a single volume slider. Ignore the slider, but click on the link for Mixer underneath it.

This brings up the Volume Mixer, which has individual volume sliders for each multimedia program running at the moment. By moving the separate sliders, you can adjust the audio levels for your web browser, system sounds, instant message program, games, and other sound producing programs. Click the speaker button under each slider to quickly mute a program – which can be handy if you want to watch a DVD or play a game and temporarily turn off all the other noise on your machine.

Hello and here’s Goomba141 here with a Software Spotlight! What is a Software Spotlight? It is when I make a post about great software (aiming to be freeware!). So here is the product of the month: Virtual Box.

What does VirtualBox do, some of you may ask, well VirtualBox is is similar the Microsoft Virtual PC, but better! If you heard of VMWare Fusion or VMWare Workstation, Virtualbox does that too, and it supports Linux, Windows, and Mac, but best of all, it’s FREE!!! Yep, it’s free! It supports Windows, Linux, and Mac (Only on macs), as guest OS’s.

VirtualBox is also opensource, allowing anyone to make it run better! It has USB support, guest additions work on all three OS’s, and if you those virtual hard disks from your old virtual machine manager, you can just open them with from VirtualBox.

So if you are interested in VirtualBox, you can download it here.

If you are using Windows Vista and receive spam in Outlook 2007 all you have to do is ensure that you move the spam email to your Junk E-mail folder. Right click the email while unopened and chose “Spam”. It will be reported as spam and disappear from Outlook.

You can also go to Tools – Options – Junk E-mail and change your settings to catch more junk e-mail, though some of your normal emails may be caught as junk e-mail if you set it to high. There are other options you may choose such as automatically deleting junk e-mails.

To avoid any of your personal e-mails from being marked as spam, just add them to the “Safe Senders” by choosing the “Safe Senders” tab and clicking on “Add”. Type in the url, e.g., www.PayPal.com and anything from that sender will be sent your inbox.

I hope this helps.

Sometimes it can happen that you forget your password for your Windows Vista account.

First of all, don’t panic, since you will probably be able to reset it, without losing your data.

Just download the following file. It contains a bootable image (.iso) that you need to burn into a new CD. You can use your favourite burning software for this task. If you have no clue about how to burn this .iso file into a new CD, you might want to have a look to the following tutorials.

Once you have the new CD ready for use, you can just boot your machine from the CD you’ve just created. You might need to change your boot sequence from the BIOS for this.

Detailed instructions on how to reset or change your old password (without knowing the original one) are available here.
