Semiotics Assignment

This week’s assigment was based on the principles of semiotics. My chosen celebrity for the semiotics collage was Thierry Henry. I used Photoshop CS4 for the project.

This was the image I worked with.

My first heading was ‘I am evil’. I started by darkening the image in certain areas of the face to give a dark effect. I then yellowed the teeth, added a redness to the eyes and created a small streak of blood using the paint tool to give a sinister effect. I then inserted an image depicting hell for the background.

The next heading I chose was ‘I am feminine’. I created a seperate image to copy the mouth alone, then painted it pink and reinserted it into the original. I painted pink over his eyes using a low opacity on the brush tool to give the effect of eye-shadow. I also reddened the cheeks in a similar way. I saved an image from the web of a woman and used the hair in the image as a wig for my image. Finally, I used a pink-ish cloud design for the background.

The last heading I chose was ‘I am wealthy’. This required the most work. I started by placing an image of a top-hat on the image and scaled it to fit Henry’s head. I then used the paint tool to draw a monacle. I also used this tool to draw a mustache and beard that signified wealth. Then, I used an image of a tuxedo jacket and scaled it to fit the image. Finally, I used a picture of stacked money for the background.

O recente escândalo envolvendo a estudante de turismo Geisy, levanta uma importante questão, discutida no cafezinho, no refeitório e em reuniões informais de trabalho. Quantas vezes você já não se deparou com aquela colega que adora decotes insinuantes, o jovem estagiário com calças de cintura baixa ou o perfume que insiste em invadir sua privacidade logo pela manhã?

Glogster indexing graphically

I came across The Filing Cabinet recently, a resource by Kelly Hines categorizing by child age and subject links to useful educational resources. I don’t want to concentrate on that right now, I’ll cover it in more detail on my SpottyBlueBanana blog.

What I do want to highlight here is the concept of using a Glog as a front end graphical index for content. It’s such a good idea – ingenious Kelly. Each image item on the Glog acts as a link to the specific category. The Glog can then be embedded in the front end of the site as a visual index. You could use icons instead of text as the visual cues, these could then run throughout the site for consistency.

I’ve been a fan of Glogster for some time and have written about it before, but such a use hadn’t occurred to me. I’ll be using the idea in the future.

Take 8 shots using a still image camera.

They have to demonstrate the following techniques

3 images showing examples of the Rule of thirds

3 – Images showing use of framing – ie close up; medium close up ; long shot.

2 – Angled shots – ie high angle, low angle, dutch tilt.

Size the images to have a maximum width of 800 pixels

Put the images into a presentation demonstrating the different techniques you have used.

Aquesta és una aplicació online de creació de mapes temàtics en fase beta (una fase beta indica la fase d’afegir noves funcionalitats i la d’eliminació d’errors en l’aplicació).

És una eina molt interessant amb la que pots afegir dades pròpies per aplicar-les a un mapa temàtic, generar el mapa, exportar-lo a un fitxer d’imatge i utilitzar-lo posteriorment per a les teves presentacions. També pots compartir dins el mateix web el mapa en la base de dades.

aSCIIaRENA has been announced by Up Rough and Divine Stylerz. Now you can easily watch fresh Amiga ASCII online, the way it was supposed to look, and hang out with elite ASCII boyz and girls. The site has some of the usual “social media” features such as a wall, forums, private messaging, voting, up/downloads. But those features are derived from old BBS-culture and not the Internet per se.

BBSs were extensively used already in the 1980s, and formed the backbone that allowed the cracker- and demoscene to blossom as somewhat isolated phenomena. Since a BBS is text-based, designers had to work with the default text characters that were sent over the phone lines. ASCII-artists designed graphics and logotypes in a graffiti-like style, quite different from current naive ASCII art online, the net.art ASCII-style of the 1990s, or earlier attempts of text art in the 1920s or 1860s.

ASCII artists release collections of their work (ASCII collys) and it’s these collys that are indexed at aSCIIaRENA. I think that almost all of it looks great, but I have a very soft spot for Amiga ASCII. I ran a small and shitty BBS in the mid 1990s (google-one-hit-wonder, almost), and called local boards with my 2400 baud modem. If you want read more on text art, check this post.

R.I.P Kevin "Squingy" Bennett

Early Tuesday morning, the reggae world lost one it’s most charismatic and exciting selectors: Kevin “Squingy” Bennett of “Bass Odyssey”

Squingy has been battling an undisclosed terminal sickness for the past year or so and unfortunately, he succumb to his illness in a Tampa, Florida hospital yesterday morning.

He will be sorely missed by his family, friends, fans and fellow soundsmen…

I will be dedicating the remainder of my 2009 parties as an MC to “Squingy”, including “One Remarkable Year” on Friday November 27th @ Woo Lounge, “Rhyme & Wine” on Friday December 4th @ Premium Rhythm Bar and “The Triple Threat” on Saturday December 19th @ Tota Lounge.

If you have never seen or heard Mr. Bennett “talk de tings dem”, then I suggest you do your research asap, as he was one of the most incredible and vibrant selectors of all time.
