Minha irmã gêmea @julioam me deu a letra no começo do mês (sim eu só postei a respeito agora) que a pouquissimo tempo foi lançado o novo album do nosso adorável dj franco-italiano Vitalic, que reinou o underground do mundo inteiro nos anos “2000epoucos” com sucessos como “La rock” e outras musicas para gente drogada que adóra eletronico de boa qualidade.

Essa nova bomba se chama Flashmob e até agora não ouvi tocando em lugar algum….huuuum as casa de SP andam bem decepcionantes ehm, ou será que o publico ja não aceita mais nada além de Lady Gaga e Black Eyed Peace (setlist by Joven Pan)?

I gotta feeling! Uhuuu…that Bad Romance is sooo last season already…keep it real bitches!

Aaaaah my favorite German electronic artists. WHy oh WHYYY aren’t they more well known. It makes me angry. Yet at the same time I’m happy that I have them all to myself…well and a few others. They’ve already released two albums, Happy Birthday and Hello Mom which are ridiculously amazing and seriously unrecognized. They are amazing live. I can’t wait to hear a new album, which is hopefully in the works?

06 Moderat – A New Error

Modeselektor + Apparat. In case you didn’t know. Two huge German powerhouse electronic artists come together and made easily one of the best albums this year, self-titled Moderat. Electronic music, though rising, is continually under-represented! Errrrrbody is all up Indie’s ass with the St. Vincent, Dirty Projectors, and Animal Collective. Sure these albums are great (they really are). But electronic music in the decades and end of year lists are seriously on the back burner. Shit. Moderat is easily in the tops in the decade and end of year for me.

It is a short taste of what’s to come and I think it’s pretty sweet. I must admit it’s defs not along the lines of Blue Lines or Mezzanine but it’s freakin’ MASSIVE ATTACK! It will be awesome regardless. This is one of my favorite songs of MA. Enjoy!

Kevesebb dolog ártott akkorát a francia elektronikus zenének, mint az electro térhódítása az évtized második felében. A Daft Punk-féle hangzás kereskedelmivé válása gyakorlatilag megölt mindent, amiben nem voltak maximumra tekert mocsárhangok és igénytelenre felfújt, kidurranó basszusok, így nem is csoda, hogy manapság alig lehet felsorolni pár olyan formációt az utóbbi évekből, akik kivételesen értéket teremtettek a francia klubzenében. Az általam sokra tartott Black Strobe mellett a Vitalic próbált hosszú időn át bekerülni e kitüntetett figyelemmel jutalmazott bandák közé, de Pascal Arbez-Nicolas projektjével nehezen lehetett napirendre térni, mert sokáig ő maga sem tudta eldönteni, hogy beálljon-e Ed Bangerék mellé a sorba csapatni, vagy inkább kevésbé tombolós, de annál időtállóbb zenéket írjon. Számomra még ma is erről szól a 2005-ös OK Cowboy album: jó pillanatok, de legtöbbször csak elpackázott lehetőségek sora, s ugyan a mainstream elektronikában viszonylag megalapozta ezzel a hírnevét Arbez-Nicolas, ám rendszerint amilyen gyorsan felkapták egy-egy számát a kritikusok, a tömeg olyan hamar el is felejtette azokat.

A fentiek ismeretében meglehetősen sokáig kellett várni a Flashmob című, második Vitalic nagylemezre, ami a zenei szakiknál egyértelműen vízválasztó volt azt illetően, hogy melyik fiókban van a helye Arbez-Nicolas zenéjének, és mennyit kell vele majd foglalkozni a továbbiakban. Az album kezdése nem valami bíztató: a See The Sea (Red) pokoli fájdalommal hordozza magán a Justice átkát, és a nemrég maxin megjelent Poison Lips is inkább buta tömegek szórakoztatására alkalmas, üres partizene, semmint valami menő francia pimptechno. Sajnos ez a gagyi veretés a későbbiekben is beijeszt még párszor (pl.: Terminateur Benelux), de alapvetően a Flashmob mégis összeszedi magát, a szintetizátorok szép dallamokra fakadnak, és a tökös ütem is megérkezik a lemez közepén. Egyébként is az ott található Second Lives a legjobb szám, amit találhatunk; tisztelettel biccent Rebotiniéknek egy nagyot, miközben hitelesen mutatja be, milyen szerelemtől kiábrándult, kokóval túlfűtött harmincas producernek lenni Párizs éjszakájában. S igazából minél felnőttesebb lesz a Flashmob, annál jobbá is válik, az utolsó húsz perce már egyértelműen nem a zöldfülű partizóknak szól. Az Allan Dellon című zene melódiája talán túlzottan komolynak is hat az album elejéhez képest, de szerencsére nem kelt hiú ábrándokat a zárásra – a Chicken Ladynél például már tényleg előttünk lehet az a sokszor ellőtt vágykép, ahogy Arbez-Nicolas őrülten vigyorogva szívja a kokaint gyönyörű szupermodellek kisfiús seggéből.

Vagyis, lehet, hogy ez a Vitalic album sem úgy indul, ahogyan kellett volna, de legalább jól végződik, ezért a Flashmob 2009-ben bátran vállalható. Pár szám után magabiztosan fordít hátat annak a mutáns electrónak, amivé Daft Punkék egykori csodagyereke átváltozott, és inkább azt a vadabb, pörgősebb szintitechnót választja, amivel a Black Strobe és a Citizen kiadó túlélte ezt az évtizedet, és aminél jelenleg nincs jobb a francia klubzenében. Úgy érzem, hogy van miért odafigyelni Vitalicra a jövőben is, és valami azt súgja, hogy minél később írja meg a harmadik nagylemezét, az annál jobb lesz.

Well this is by no means new news, or news of any sort if I’m going to be completely honest, other than I’ve re-discovered  a song and video that I was once totally obsessed with, and once again it has got me acting all Glenn Closey and proper frothing at the mouth at the mere thought of getting my hands on my bastard boyfriends cutesy little bunny and boiling the rodent (this is of course a joke to all you animal lovers out there, i would most defiantly fry it!)

Anyway to the point, and the point is Black Strobe are back and will be playing at matter along with Vitalic, Morgan Geist
L’Amour La Morgue and Disco&Mercy for Vitalic’s Flashmob album launch on the 28th of this month.

Needless to say as soon as my rave adorning eyes feasted upon this piece of information I was struck with nostalgic memories of how great Black Strobe once were (before they featured on that rotter of a Guy Ritchie film Rock ‘n’ Rolla, I mean the song wasn’t to bad, but the film….what a stinker!), and personally for me Black Strobes greatness peaked with the record ‘Me and Madonna’ which was released on Output Recordings in 2002!! (Nearly/basically eight years ago people, I don’t know how many of you are with me on this one, but that just seems mad! EIGHT GODDAMN YEARS AGO?!?!)

Anyway the songs a treat, the video’s a treat, so if you click at the bottom of the post, you’ll find a little treat from me to you…

Pascal Arbez, AKA Vitalic, creator of the decade-defining La Rock 01 and the equally ace debut album OK Cowboy in 2005, has been pretty quiet for the past few years. Back this year, finally, with a follow-up album called Flashmob, Poison Lips is pretty typical of the sound. Atmospheric, brooding, almost creepy electro that, while not moving tectonic plates to the extent that OK Cowboy often seemed to, hits the spot and sounds a class above anyone else still ploughing this particular furrow. The video complements the noises perfectly and is, as ever, below the click.

In honor of all the twos featured in the post title, here are three (!) sets of two songs that either complement each other or bookend the albums they appear on. I won’t ramble too much in the intro as I have plenty of rambling (and some damn fine tuneage) below.

Vitalic – See the Sea (Blue)/See the Sea (Red)
Vitalic’s latest album, Flashmob, features these two companion pieces, with both follow the same melody to very different conclusions.

Here’s what I love about Vitalic. He doesn’t fuck around. He’s an electro producer who’s been around since the early 2000’s. As one of the forerunners for the short-lived and over-hyped “electroclash” movement, Vitalic put in a little time making his name in that scene with the assistance of the “vocals” of Ms. Kitten.

Once everyone got tired of electro mixing with rock and dumping monotone monologues full of “shocking” subject matter (Drugs! Blowjobs!! Drugs and blowjobs!!!), the scene disintegrated into a million shiny shards. Most were trampled under the fleeting shoes of a million bandwagon-jumpers.

Vitalic stuck to his guns and his true calling: electro. Freed of the deadpan vocal schtick, Vitalic hit the bedroom studio and perfected his niche. His last two albums (including Flashmob) have been solid, with only a few misses. They also operate well as albums, a rarity in the mp3 world.

But here’s the key: he does it without pandering. He does it without attempting to court the mainstream with a ton of guest stars. He does it without attempting to broaden his spectrum by introducing change for the sake of change. He just cranks out track after track of amazing, confident electro.

Obviously this makes it a tougher sell than, say, “hard rock” or “old standards.” But if you’re good at what you do, why dilute it by flirting with the mainstream or other people who are never going to give a shit anyway?

See the Sea (Blue) starts slowly, building on some low-key synths and vocoded-into-thin-air vocals before tangling with a 303 in a nightclub parking lot.

See the Sea (Red) starts out bruising before suddenly dropping the bluster and showing its sensitive side.

Front 242 – Serial Killers Don’t Kill Their Girlfriend/Serial Killers Don’t Kill Their Boyfriend
Out of Belgium, which is close enough to Germany to fall under the “you can’t throw a rock in this part of Europe without hitting an industrial band.” Progressing from the chanting and martial beats of their earlier work, which often gave them the feel of a deeper Nitzer Ebb, Front 242 dropped two incredible albums in 1993: 06:21:03:11 Up Evil and 05:22:09:12 Off. (The numbers stand for letters…)

Off is their masterpiece. Full of stylistic experiments, sound collages and even occasional female vocals, Off transcends the “industrial” label. These twin tracks appear six songs apart on an album filled with variations on themes. The song Animal appears four times with the subtitles Cage, Gate, Guide and Zoo, while Modern Angels progresses from an aggro stomper (original) to pulsing techno (Happiness [More Angels]) before concluding the album with a hardcore raveup (Speed Angels).

If these songs are serial killers, Boyfriend is the swaggering misanthrope, heading down dark alleys, all knives and chains. Girlfriend is the shadow in the bushes and the creak on the stairs.

Jesus and Mary Chain – Reverence/Frequency
Taken from the Chain’s last good album (Honey’s Dead), these track echo each other and actually bookend the album, with Reverence (and its attendant blasphemy) setting the tone and Frequency providing a coda in half the time with all the blasphemy and a set of chords (and a refrain) jacked from Greg Kihn’s Roadrunner.

Vitalic – The Past

I Love Techno 09! How I wish I had been there. Myself and a group of friends went last year and it was some of the most hassle free out of country clubbing I have ever embarked on (anyone who has tried to reach the Benicassim festival can testify to this). We jumped on the Eurostar and after a couple of hours were nestled in the picturesque city of Brugge, before stomping off to Ghent for one of the best nights of my life.

So I was spitting feathers when this mangled girl saunters up to me last weekend, asking for a lighter, wearing an I Love Techno 09 fleece (who the fuck honestly wears a fleece anymore, especially to a rave? In fact who buys fleeces anymore? Actually why the fuck are ‘I Love Techno’ even selling fleeces?). Anyway…  we got into a conversation and she harped on about how amazing the whole thing had been, that Dave Clarke smashed it and SMD live were awesome (standard). By this point I wanted to spit in her drink, she wouldn’t have noticed either but I’m not that spiteful! Besides I couldn’t even muster moisture let alone spit.

So in celebration of mangled-random girl’s amazing night at I Love Techno here is as many of the main mixes I could find. If anyone finds a copy of Dave Clarke, Fake Blood, Laurent Garnier or the Crookers, please send me the link, although I doubt they exist.

Pour avoir vu le show d’Ebony Bones cet été, je peux vous certifier que c’est haut en couleur et bourré d’energie ! Un sacré spectacle à voir. Musicalement, c’est très dense et ça part dans tous les sens, c’est du ton sur ton. DJ Vadim, signé chez Ninja Tune, et les Dub Pistols qui n’ont pas une sale réputation sur scène animeront le reste de la soirée.

VITALIC sera en concert au Bataclan le samedi 13 novembre et affiche complet depuis un petit moment déjà.

Si vous entendez parler d’une place dispo (un copain qui a pris sa place mais qui finalement ne peut pas s’y rendre par exemple)… faites moi signe !

I love record shopping. Vinyl shopping to be precise, flicking through the racks, scooting for tracks and picking out potential winners, sometimes losers too, but always giving me that feeling of contentment; new grooves will soon be cut by the needle. The familiar crackle and pop of the first play – warm sound. Yeah, it’s vinyl for me.

Don’t get me wrong – I can handle a download or three, CDJs are fun bits of kit and the things you can do with mp3s are nothing short of genius. But I just can’t resist the back breaking slog of trecking out with a big sack of records. Old fashioned? No matter – my habit continues to be supported…

… I also continue to support those legends of the music world, independent record shops. Havens of the DJ and mecca to the muso, our independents continue to push the boundaries that we need to be pushed. We look to our trusty record shop staff to point us to the latest releases, pick out top pops, and like librarians of the beat with a touch more attitude, use their infinite knowledge to deliver unto us, the holy grail of record shopping – the limited release floor filler, that hasn’t yet dropped into the public domain.

I recently paid a visit to Rounder Records in Brighton and caught up with the team. Far from being swamped under the strain of the downturn, Rounder seem to be digging in for the long run. All things considered it has already been a long run – head honcho Phil has owned the place for around ten years now, but the store was opened in 1966 – that’s 43 years of vinyl trading my friends – rock on!

The sister store to Sister Ray in Soho, Rounder is currently run by Johnny and Steve of Chaos Rocks fame along with a handful of very helpful and knowledgeable staff. It’s regularly rated one of the top independent stores in the country and has been monickered by some as the “Rough Trade of the South”. It’s employed some staff in the past who’ve gone on to do pretty big things, such as  Mike Panteli, Damian Harris of Midfield General fame and some geezer called Norman. It all adds to the musical heritage of the place. Johnny and all the former staff got together recently over a fair few drinks and put together their “Best Records of Our Lifetime” list, with a top album for each year since the store opened. “It’s on a knackered computer somewhere and we’re determined to get hold of it” says Johnny. Damn right – we’d love to publish it!

In the early days; 66 to 79, Rounder was mainly a rock music oriented store, but as dance music evolved so did the the choice of what to sell. Along with all the regulars, the genres that are currently keeping business tidy are Drum n Bass, Dubstep and Disco with a healthy dose of indie and rock. “Nothing’s off limits though” says Johnny, “We just try and filter out the pop tat and give people what they want. The top tens we do here aren’t a hard and fast science – we make them up from what we love and what’s flying off the shelves. There’s always something new coming through and it’s difficult to say exactly what it is that we like the most – we just love music”.

That’s the essence really. These guys live and breathe music in a way that makes me just a bit envious – I have to switch off the noise in order to hold down my day job. These chaps brush their teeth with grooves, eat funky lunch and sleep on pillows of dub.

In his spare time Johnny DJ’s at the Maxxi Soundsystem nights (returning in May 2010 people) and is one half of musical duo Videodrome, who provide the mix of M’s “Pop Musik” in theTop Ten coming up. Videodrome are also releasing a remix of Michael Morph on December 1st (Pure Mint records), available on iTunes and Beatport (promos are around now – get yourself down to Rounder) and their first EP is out next year on Chateaux Records.
