November 23, 2008. Shock. Disorientation. A robot. An actor following a script. Loss. Deep sadness. Tears. Guilt. Anger. Emptiness. Numb- ness. Longing. Tears. Deep sadness. One year has passed; or has it been a day? November 23, 2009.

Yesterday I was strolling alone through the French Quarter of New Orleans. “You know, James should be here with me. He’d get a kick out this place. Furthermore, he’d pick me up with a joke. We’d be twenty years younger again, trading secret humor and eliciting stares. I guess I’ll have to settle for a call to his cell. Oh, wait, I almost forgot. It’s opening weekend. He’s in his stand with Dad’s old .32 Winchester Special waiting for Old Goldie.”

I stopped at St. Louis and Royal, and listened to the guitarist across the street pick a mournful, yet enchanting melody. Once. Twice. Three times. I lost count of the number of times he played the tune. Tears. Emptiness. Deep sadness. I threw money into his bucket. “Thank you,” I said. He couldn’t have known how providence had brought us together. Yet, he looked up with a glimmer of recognition in his eyes and uttered with a smile, “God Bless You.”

God, will you please bless me, as the man desired?

BEST MASH-UP ALBUM I HAVE EVER HEARD!

For being someone that considered himself a moderate Coldplay and Jay-Z fan at best, this album caught me by surprise. Simply put, if you are a fan of either Coldplay or Jay-Z this album is a MUST HAVE. The album is officially given credit to Terry Urban and Mick Boogie (two of arguably the best producers of the last 5 years, produced with artists like Kid CuDi, 6th Sense, Wale . . . ) but almost every song is produced by someone else such as 9th Wonder (also worked with 6th Sense), 6th Sense himself, The Kickdrums, nVMe, The Amps, Cookin’ Soul, and many more. The songs do not sound like mash ups, but rather as if Jay-Z was in the studio rapping over Coldplay samples. The mash-ups actually are so legit, Jay-Z actually sponsored it and approved it and put it up on his website. I even urge you, if you do not care for either Jay-Z or Coldplay to get this album, it is an epic album that you must have on your ipod. Give it a chance and you may, and probably will be, surprised.

This is probably one of the few rap albums you can listen from intro to end and enjoy it all. Almost every song is good, and all different in their own way. I recommend songs like “Lost Part 2 [Remixed By Mick Boogie]“, “Cold Success [Prod. By 9th Wonder]“, “Life of Clocks [Prod. By Teryy Urban]“, “X-Y-Z (Prod. by Hasan Insane)”.

Overall: 9 / 10     A MUST HAVE ON YOUR IPOD!!!

I get so frustrated when my Facebook doesn’t work.  Why does facebook have such control over my life?!  (o;  It really doesn’t..sometimes I wish I didn’t even have the thing.  It causes a lot of ruckus in my life sometimes.  It is a hilarious thing.  Don’t ever change anybody’s status without them knowing though.  I almost lost a sister that way.  (o;

Today, I woke up at 10:30.  Uhmm…yes, I was quite lazy this morning.  I stayed up rather late last night though.  Project Runway Finale was on..and I was not going to miss that.  I was disappointed by who won, but I was quite inspired by Carol Hannah’s line.  It made me want to sew like crazy.  I will try to go to bed earlier tonight, because really, all this staying up late is killing me.  Sleep deprivation is like death I think…

Went with mamma to Costco this afternoon..we picked out a freezer, and I played a concert for the lovely customers.  They starred at me as I banged out coldplay’s Viva la Vida..and some original music scores I had written out for Bella’s broadway production.  I just love playing music for people.  I want to do it for the rest of my life.

Anyway, I haven’t written anything very spiritual in a while.  And it’s not because I’ve been having a hard time spiritually, but rather I’ve had a lot to think about lately.  God has been working in marvelous ways these past few weeks.  To see how He is working everything out is amazing.  I don’t have words to express the joy and faith He has been spreading throughout my heart.  Jesus has become such a beautiful friend to me.  A friend of mine called the other night, and we talked about how Jesus has changed each of us.  How He took our filthy selves, and made us new.  I started thinking about how God sees sin as sin..in His eyes, one is not greater than the other..we all need to be saved, and freed, and made new.  So, no matter what we have done in our past, Jesus is waiting to make us new.  He does not forgive one person more than another.  As I was thinking of this, I began to become excited and full of peace.  Jesus is forgiveness, no matter what we have done♥

I love Him for that.

I was  listening to Green Day’s most recent album today – 21^st Century Breakdown, a pretty good piece of work, to be honest – when I noticed something very odd about two of the song titles.

As those of you who have heard the CD know, there is a song called Viva la Gloria! A few tracks later, there is another song, Viva la Gloria? Naturally, I thought this was clever, but I couldn’t help but feel that it was strangely familiar in some way.  And then, a second later, it clicked.

See the connection?

Most of us are familiar with Coldplay’s most recent album, Viva la Vida.  “Okay,” you might say, “Viva la anything is a pretty common phrase…so what?”  But wait… there’s more.  The album has two songs on it – one called Lost! and a second called…you guessed it…Lost?

Whoa.

And if that’s not enough evidence for you, take a closer look at Viva la Vida.  It has a sort of military theme going on, represented by the battle scene on the cover art, the lyrics of many of the songs, and even the band’s outfits – military-style jackets, of course.

Yes, I want one too, but unfortunately they're custom-made.

I thought that was the end of that – I mean, Green Day’s punk-rock members wouldn’t be caught dead in such a get-up, would they?  Or at least, that’s what I assumed.  Until I saw the Rolling Stones cover that changed it all.

A mere twist of fate? I think not, Billie Joe Armstrong!

I’m not suggesting that Green Day is ripping off Coldplay by any means – I’m just drawing attention to these interesting similarities.  Coincidence?  Or paranoia on my part?  You decide!

Some people have asked why I love Coldplay so much, why I’m so completely obsessed with their music.  And I’m not going to deny it – my entire 25 Most Played on my iPod is made up of their songs, and the background on both my computer and said iPod is graced with their picture.  I suppose that this would be a good time to mention that I am not obsessed with them because of their looks; they are certainly quite handsome, but I admire them immensely not because of their appearance but because of the beautiful melodies that they are capable of creating.

Okay, maybe a LITTLE bit because of their appearance.

Since I listen to music constantly, I particularly enjoy when it suits my mood.  If I’m feeling down, I like a slow, sad song that allows me to reflect and wallow for a bit.  When I’m happy and optimistic, I prefer an upbeat melody that rushes through my veins like adrenaline.  Or sometimes I’m feeling angry, like a strange pressure is building up inside with no means of escape, and I seek out an explosive, powerful song that beats inside me like a second heart, displacing all that unnecessary stress.  Usually, I’m capable of finding all sorts of different songs on my iPod that suit my feelings, thanks to the wide variety of music it holds.

The interesting thing about Coldplay, however, is that their songs cover such a vast breadth of emotion, ranging from the most somber laments to bright, rollicking melodies that make you feel as if you’re light enough to defy gravity.  No matter what emotion I am feeling, I assure you that I can find a Coldplay song to match – and, on the other hand, I have become so in tune with their music that just listening to it can put me in a particular mood.  Amsterdam and Warning Sign, for instance, leave me feeling introspective and quiet, whereas the incredible, soaring melody of Speed of Sound rushes through me with an intensity that leaves me stunned.  And of course, there are those general feel-good songs that leave you feeling so optimistic and carefree that you feel as if you could burst with happiness.  Listen to Strawberry Swing, let its beat flow within you as you’re walking, and tell me you don’t feel that rush of pleasure.  I dare you.

Another thing I love about this band is that they will always continue to surprise me.  For instance, they are well-known for their sweet, catchy love songs with lines that will stick with you for ages.  “I came here with a load, and it’s been so much lighter since I’ve met you,” Chris Martin sings in Green Eyes, “and honey, you should know I could never go on without you.”  However, I recently listened to a song of theirs from the Viva la Vida album, and I was quite astonished and pleased by the deviation from their typical views of romance.  Yes is unique in several ways, the most immediately obvious one being the manner in which it is sung.  The band uses different instruments to give this darker song a subtle Arabic feel, in a way, and Chris abandons his usual falsetto for a deeper, growing voice that sends shivers up my spine every time I hear it.  The differences don’t stop there, however – even the lyrics themselves show that this is no cute love song, obviously dedicated to a wife or loved one.  Listen to the second stanza – if you’re a Coldplay fan who’s used to songs such as Yellow, Green Eyes, Fix You, and the like, then you’ll immediately get what I’m talking about.  “We were dying of frustration, saying, ‘Lord, lead us not into temptation,’ but it’s not easy when she turns you on…sin stay gone.”  This is the first time I’ve heard them touch upon forbidden love and passion (I mean, the message is quite clear – “God only knows she won’t let me rest, and I’m just so tired of this loneliness.”), and I couldn’t be happier with this variation in style.  I’ve read reviews that refer to this song as “incredibly sexy,” and though all Coldplay songs are spiritually appealing, I couldn’t agree more with this one in particular.

That whole sense of spirituality is one last important aspect of their music that makes it so alluring.  Their music is more than words, than feelings in poetic form – it is a mantra, something to live by.  It’s been described as a religious experience, and one can feel that power while listening to the songs.  “I don’t want to battle from beginning to end, I don’t want to cycle or recycle revenge – I don’t want to follow Death and all of his friends,” goes the intense chorus to the song of the same name.  All you have to do is absorb their lyrics – once you hear them and sing along, I assure you you’ll take them to heart.

Coldplay is my favorite band at this moment in time, and if you’re not a fan, I encourage you to give their music a try.  And for all of you out there saying, “Ugh, Viva la Vida is so overplayed, I can’t stand them” – remember, that is only one song from one album.  Most of their most outstanding songs are those that are played the least frequently, so keep that in mind.  Listen to their incredible first album, Parachutes, or perhaps try one of my favorites, the softer and more introspective A Rush of Blood to the Head.  And don’t be afraid to listen to Viva la Vida just because one song on the album is a bit overdone.  I assure you, you’re missing out on so much if you judge the entire CD by that one track.  Give it a listen, and you might find that you actually like their work.

Besides, as Chris Martin said, “If you never try, then you’ll never know!”

Volvemos con nuevas ideas que esperemos os gusten. ¿Qué está pasando con aquellos grupos de los que hace días, incluso meses que no sabemos nada? Acabaron sus giras y promociones, pero… ¿en qué andan ahora? ¿Dónde se han metido?

Y esa es precisamente la pregunta que nos planteamos hoy acerca de la banda que nos ocupa: Coldplay. Lo cierto es que su web es una de las más activas e interesantes del panorama. Tras su última etapa con la gira de promoción de su “Viva la Vida“, que reemprenderán en el mes de febrero con un recorrido por Suramérica, no cesa su actividad.

En este descanso, han puesto en marcha la iniciativa “The Exhibition Room“, una galería de arte digital creada por fans, en la que éstos presentan sus trabajos gráficos. Esta galería virtual abrió sus puertas el pasado 5 de noviembre, y es posible visitarla haciendo un simple click aquí. Es curiosa la sensación que produce rememorar temas como Strawberry Swing mientras uno pasea por las pinturas, animaciones, creaciones en vídeo. Un entretenimiento más que interesante hasta la llegada de su nuevo material.

Coldplay llega a México en su gira Viva la Vida, en donde estará promocionando su nuevo material del mismo nombre, que viene a dar una visión más madura del grupo, pero sin comprometer la visión que los ha hecho tan populares entre sus seguidores.

Ear Worms (from the German phrase Ohrwurm) are those songs that weasel their way into your head like uninvited guests and then proceed to stink up the inside of your cranium by playing themselves there over. And over. And over. And over. They’re those songs that just get stuck in your head, and no amount of screaming, pounding, protesting, and banging your head into your desk will get them out. Someone infected with an Ear Worm may find themselves prone to bursting out into the song in inappropriate places, tugging at their ears in fury, and can end up distracted in the middle of conversation (or other important activities) by the continuous snatches of song wavering between their ears. And it’s only a matter of time before, like Darryl Revok, they drill a hole in their forehead to let the voices out.

Thank you TV Tropes for giving a name to this phenomenon. Millions of us suffer from Ear Worm infection; in our cars, our offices, on the internet and in our iPods. Most are vapid pop songs churned out from the bowels of Hollywood & Vine (or the equivalent London address). Of course, each ear worm is distinct to each sufferer, like a virus that mutates to fit your brain chemistry. Some become classics in spite (or because) they inspire you to bob your head, raise your hand or scream (screw?) like you don’t care…or some such.

Some of my reasons bouts with ear worm include the following symptoms:

Questioning whether I am human or am a dancer? I don’t know, I really, really don’t know….

Miss the time when I ruled the world, although I can’t remember when that was. A past life perhaps?

Wonder why the lovers are losing or why my love is spiraling down and out of control. Seems a tad unfair to me.

Or why am I waiting here? Or for.  I hate waiting.

I know the world is stage, but is it a sickly sweet yet bitterly ironic show for everybody else amusement, who don’t realize that they are also part of said show?

Or course kissing a girl is a fun to do, and more so when its your girlfriend kissing another girl! Bet you like that! Then she dumps you for that special somebody that is hot, sexy and female (and not you). Bummer dude!

And the latest ear worm. It involves fireflies, that much I know. Plus a cool retro tune and toys. Maybe you can figure out the lyrics?

Inizia domani 1 novembre la quinta edizione della rassegna LEZIONI DI ROCK, incontri di approfondimento a cura di Gino Castaldo e Ernesto Assante, critici musicali, giornalisti, ma soprattutto due grandi appassionati di musica, quella buona  e vera, che sanno riconoscere e trasmettere raccontandone, come si farebbe a un amico, tutti i dettagli spesso inediti della storia e di cio’ che ha fatto nascere o spesso finire una determinata situazione musicale. Che si parli di un artista, di un disco o di una band in generale, Lezioni di Rock è sempre l’occasione per imparare qualcosa in più grazie ai racconti dei due esperti, che ne sanno una più del devil, supportati da ottimo materiale video, foto e audio a rendere ogni incontro più completo.

Anche io mi sento allieva di Gino ed Ernesto e grazie a queste lezioni di rock, che frequento con certosina assiduità, ho fatto crescere il mio bagaglio di conoscenze musicali. Non vi lasciate  ingannare dal titolo della rassegna, perchè se il rock è l’ingrediente fondamentale degli incontri domenicali, non macheranno il jazz, il pop, RnB e tutto cio’ che può essere considerato la grande Musica degli ultimi cento anni.

I did my first stand-up comedy ten-minute set ever at Paradox Comedy’s “Motel Hell” Halloween show yesterday (October 29) evening at Art 6 in midtown Richmond, VA, following in the illustrious footsteps of RVA comedians such as Jared Cullum, Ray Bullock, Blake Midgette, Jeff Curran and Melanie Rasnic. I guess we’ll know we’re making progress when some of us start showing up in Wikipedia and Zemanta starts suggesting links when I use these names. If I left anyone out of Paradox’s stand-up roster, I apologize profusely. (Not that anyone cares.)

People responded well and got props from some members of the audience afterwards. Thanks for Jesse Wiley and Thomas George for affording me the opportunity. Thanks to Jesse for being the friendly face in the front row. (Actually, there is a Thomas George in Wikipedia but he’s a politician in Australia.) I did a couple of jokes about Artie Lange again but that may be too infra dig for RVA. I wonder if people in Richmond know who he has. Of course, Howard Stern had a run in Richmond syndicated to a local radio station but I suspect that was way before Artie’s time. Lange really looks like hell in the above photo — he makes John Belushi look like a health nut. Mandie Hillary hadn’t heard of balloon boy so my joke went over her head. She must be one of the few people on the planet who hasn’t heard of him by now, and that might be a good thing.

Paradox Comedy didn’t have comedy club lighting so I could see people in the audience a lot better than usual, not to mention good lighting for videotaping moi. I’m now four videos of my sets behind. Procrastination more than anything else. I did a couple of interviews with Jesse and Thomas after the show, audio and video.

I have been uploading videos I shot of the previous “Motel Hell” to a new YouTube channel I started at www.youtube.com/LaughHut. I’m going to use Laugh Hut as a place for videos of non-me comedy. I’ve been trying to separate out videos by channels to avoid confusion: one channel for interviews (SmokinHotComedy), one channel for my stand-up (ChrisMartinComedian) and one for general stuff (Mediastupor). I’ve been trying to upload more stuff by setting up the YouTube multi-loader to upload stuff while I’m sleeping. That’s generally good for two or three videos a night based on the fact that it takes roughly an hour per 100 megabytes with my low-end DSL connection.

Unfortunately, I exited the show only to find that the lock on my bike had malfunctioned so that I had to catch a ride from one of the crew, which screwed up my plans to swing by Kroger and also mail my latest Netflix movie.

I managed to blow past 200 followers on Twitter but the numbers are dropping back as I don’t follow people back who are into MLM or who appear to have randomly followed me based on no particular mutual interest (an Indian art advisor, The Elbow Friend, a gadget that you attach to your chair (may have been looking for the other Chris Martin since they posted a “Viva la Vida” YouTube video,  a NYC art dealer, etc. in hopes that I will follow them back. This makes about as much sense as making friends with people you randomly call from the phone book but whatever floats their boat. I make it clear on my Twitter page that I’m all about the comedy so there’s no false advertising on my part. They too shall pass.

În ultima vreme industria muzicală a devenit prea comercială şi zgomotoasă pentru gusturile unui bătrân ca mine, dar cine ştie, poate că am eu standarde prea înalte sau pur şi simplu nu mă pot adapta cu noile concepte muzicale care sunt “la modă”. Nu mă plâng prea tare pentru că, din fericire, mai există şi excepţii de la rigorile impuse de obilitatea numită “modă”:

Am păstrat ce am considerat eu mai frumos şi mai bun pentru la urmă … ca un desert :
