Christope, le Beau Bizarre, performed last Monday, December 14 at the Ancienne Belgique in Brussels.

I arrived late to the concert under the false impression that there would be a support act, but Christophe didn’t want to make it linger and chose his lastest album Aimer ce que nous sommes as prelude to the older and better known part of his répertoire. The absence of a support band was already an indication of the conciseness of a concert which, although in no way rushed or hasty, had its two encores performed without the artist leaving the stage.

I entered the concert hall 10 minutes before the break, with Christophe performing Tonight Tonight from his new album, a French variété rarity in a record marked rather by sound and sensations than by tune or melody. I am therefore unable to judge the first part of the concert. In principle it must be hard to transfer an album like Aimer… into a live performance on stage. Christophe famously works almost exclusively by night on the computer, trying to capture the sounds of the night as he feels them through the big windows of his Parisian apartment looking onto the city streets. The kaleidoscopic picture of the record sleeve announces the essence of the record, a huge collage of steamy and nighty sounds and sensations. A devoted follower of cinema, most notably of David Lynch’s films, Christoph’s only exploration of film territory goes back to the soundtrack of Georges Lautner’s 1967 La Route de Salina. The influence of the cinematographic language, however, has never been so blatantly present in Christoph’s work than on this album. From the introductory words, whispered by Isabelle Adjani, to the final credits of collaborations, spoken by Daniel Filipacchi, this could be the soundtrack of a film by his admired David Lynch.

During the break I was thrilled to spot among the crowd, obligingly observing the very local jeton-bière ceremony, Belgian electro pop diva Els Pynoo from Vive la Fête. I approached her (see picture) to congratulate her on the fantastic concert her band had given in the same hall some weeks before, in which dozens of followers literally flooded the stage in the climatic finale of the performance.

After this celebrity moment we went back to the hall for the second part of the concert, in which Christoph proved his ability to revisit his old classics with a new sound. Surrounded by a band of excellent musicians, with the piano man a standout, and by his juke box, Chritophe delighted the crowd with a nostalgic lineup including my personal favorite Les Marionettes, the beautiful Les Mots Bleus and the unavoidable Aline, the song he will always be identified with.

Het zingt met diepe grauwe stem, kan rappen als een geboren Jamaicaan en het smaakt naar bier? Stellah Sue. Soms is het reggae, dan weer volle soul en af en toe zelfs grimmige blues en je kan het eten met balletjes? Selah Suep. Het werd ooit ontdekt door Milow, speelde in zijn voorprogramma maar ook in dat van Jamie Lidell en Novastar en het ruikt niet zo fris? Smellah Sue.

Marie Daulne van Zap Mama noemt het “een authentieke, pure ster aan het firmament” en het springt wel eens van een gebouw? Selah Suecide. Af en toe brengt het een cover van Erykah Badu en Amy Winehouse maar het heeft ook een groeiend repertoire aan eigen pareltjes en het staat soms in de wei te grazen? Bellah Sue.

Ooit wees het een gigantisch platencontract af om de zelfstandigheid te bewaren, sinds kort staat het ingetekend op hetzelfde label als Justice, Manu Chao en Moby en het is te vinden in een Chinees restaurant? Selah Suehtzure saus. Het is nog maar twintig jaar oud en staat helemaal alleen, maar zelfverzekerd met slechts een akoestische gitaar in de hand op het podium en het is behoorlijk vet? Het wordt wel eens de revelatie van het jaar genoemd en het bevecht kleine monsters terwijl het paddenstoelen eet? Selah Suepermariobros. Het is een niet te missen act en het zal je gegarandeerd meesleuren in een muzikaal wereldje waar smart, soul en gedrevenheid elkaar ontmoeten? Selah Sue.

Los belgas Vive la Fête regresan con su nuevo album Disque d’Or, pero están empezando a darme un poco de pereza, parece como si no quisieran confirmar lo que prometieron con discos redondos como Nuit Blanche o casi redondos como Grand Prix. Si su Jour de Chance ya me resultó algo falto de inspiración, este Disque D’Or no mejora mucho el asunto, se pierde en melodías algo insulsas y ritmos no demasiado inspirados. Falta fuelle. A pesar de todo, su directo sigue siendo maravilloso y el single no está mal del todo, especialmente su título: L’amour physique.

O Vive la Fête está, em termos de atenção midiática, no mesmo nível que as bandas regionais brasileiras. Grande parte do axé nunca saiu da Bahia nem nunca precisou, grande parte do sertanejo não deixou o interior de São Paulo pela mesma razão. Nesses lugares, eles seguem ignorados pelos críticos e dotados de público cativo, satisfeitos. Trazendo a comparação de volta à escala global: o VLF não sai da Europa por nada na vida (com exceção das insistentes visitas ao Brasil – sim!), está feliz em pertencer à cena electro daquelas bandas, não fazendo música para revolucionar o mundo, mas sim, para agitar shows lotados nos lounges mais chiques do mundo e para servir de trilha sonora para desfiles da haute couture.

Até à crítica sucumbiu, no entanto, ao poder do Nuit Blanche, terceiro disco da banda. Depois de várias menções em revistas importantes, eles seguiram em frente com Grand Prix, mas, nesse ponto, eles já eram atacados pelas mesmas revistas que os laureavam. Quando eles lançaram Jour de Chance, dois anos depois, nem menções mais eles tinham. Curiosamente, Grand Prix e Jour de Chance são álbuns bem melhores que o Nuit Blanche, representando o mais perto que o VLF chegou de fazer discos inteiramente coesos (o Grand Prix, inclusive, foi o que fez a banda estourar no Brasil).

Disque d’Or deve soar “disk dor” na cabeça de muita gente (e se você não gosta de electro, realmente vai soar) e, como todo santo lançamento do VLF, não representa mudança alguma no som da banda. Eu pessoalmente não gosto de bandas que se prendem num tipo de som a carreira toda, mas quando os discos são bem construídos, por que não? Não é o caso desse aqui. Até fãs de longa data terão dificuldade com algumas faixas aqui (arrisco-me até a prever a mais odiada pela maioria deles: “Baiser Canon”, que poderia se chamar “a pior maneira de incorporar instrumentos de sopro a uma música eletrônica”).

Outras devem agrada-los, mas ofendem qualquer um com um bom ouvido pra música, como a péssima “Everybody Hates Me”. Não, apesar do título, a música nada tem de Smiths, Cure ou mesmo emocore: consiste na repetição da medíocre linha “Everybody hates me ’cause I’m rock’n'roll, let’s get high tonight”. Pra piorar, é o tecladista Danny Mommens e não a sexy vocalista Els Pynoo quem canta isso, e ele realmente não sabe cantar. Ademais, “Elle N’Écoute Pas” consegue ranquear entre as piores faixas de encerramento do grupo, o que é dizer alguma coisa.

Os poucos momentos bons são contáveis nos dedos: “Petit Colibri”, faixa de abertura que inicia com um discurso nervoso de Pynoo, melhor inovação do disco todo; “Amour Physique”, primeiro single, linda canção com teclados emocionantes; “Courtois”, a única faixa midtempo acertada; e a dobradinha “Ce Que Tu Penses de Moi” e “Elsangel”, as mais roqueiras do álbum De resto, Disque d’Or é uma porção de faixas sem destaque algum, que passam despercebidas pela maioria dos ouvintes, o que é ainda mais triste se lembrarmos que o Vive la Fête tinha acertado tão bem a fórmula nos dois últimos discos. Se eles ligam pra isso? Claro que não. Eles devem estar ocupados demais balançando os esqueletos de jovens ambivalentes em algum clube em Bruxelas… Tudo bem, nós também não ligamos.

Noir Désir – Vive la Fête

Logo dun amplo período de descanso (só que refire a este blogue) por fin volvemos actualizar, e facémolo para dar conta dunha das citas habituais no verán musical galego, o festival Cultura Quente de Caldas de Reis, que se celebrará na súa habitual carballeira os días 10 e 11 de xullo.

O cartaz deste ano sufriu a significativa baixa de última hora dos New York Dolls, pero aínda así ofrece unha programación compacta e variada.

Nel atopamos propostas tan variadas como a dúo belga Vive La Fête (que foran tamén baixa de ultimísima hora na pasada edición), o rock dunha das bandas míticas dos noventa como Lagartija Nick, o post-punk dos británicos The Wedding Present, o surf instrumental de Los Coronas ou a mestura de pop e hip-hop dos barceloneses Facto Delafé y Las Flores Azules.

Como sempre a entrada é de balde e haberá zona de acampada.

Essa que agora passa pela voz da berrante e encantadora Els Pynoo. Que bom que o Vive La Fête conseguiu um cover sem destruir a criação.

Nenhuma época do ano seria mais oportuna para falar do novo álbum do Vive la Fête, Disque D’or, do que essa semana. Primeiro porque ele foi lançado por esses dias; segundo porque nada melhor que esse clima fashionista no qual estamos para comentar sobre Els e Danny, que receberam elogios rasgados do mundo da moda (Karl Lagerfeld que o diga).

Então… Pra quem ainda não baixou o álbum e só conhece a Everybody Hates Me e/ou não vai poder ir ao SPFW que esta edição ganha uma temática francesa, segue a dica de duas músicas que me chamaram muuuita atenção – mais ainda que a Everybody Hates Me.

This was supposed to become a merry blog about a great festival with a great line up… However, after what happened in the end, I don’t feel like writing about it anymore. This is (in my own words) what Nu.nl wrote about it:

The festival, which annually celebrates freedom, was prematurely terminated after the police fired several warning shots. Reason: a mass brawl.

Tuesday evening 2 groups of young people started fights regularly with each other over and over again. A bottle was thrown and somebody got stabbed with the remains of it. The police then opened the emergency exits, so visitors could easily leave the festival site. That did not work when the crowd turned against the police officers. Warning shots were fired and the event got canceled around 22:30 hours. The lights were turned on and the music was stopped. The party was originally scheduled until  23.00 hours. In the hustle and bustle the victim of the stabbing disappeared.
