Yesterday Kenneth Green, Chairman of luxury fragrance and skincare distributor Kenneth Green Associates was welcomed into the Fragrance Foundation’s elite Circle of Champions. Truly passionate about fragrance, he is only the third UK recipient to receive this prestigious industry award (the other two being Sir Paul Smith and grande dame of British fashion Vivienne Westwood) and a more deserved recipient I can’t think of. Here he shares his insight  into the current state of the male fragrance industry and what reveals what makes a genius juice….

GG: What does it mean to you to be honoured by The Fragrance Foundation in this way?
KG: It makes me very proud for our company’s achievements over the past 20 years.

GG: So what’s your favourite male fragrance of all time?
KG: Definitely L’Eau d’Issey Pour Homme.  It’s clean, fresh and discreet and is housed in a beautiful, yet simple, classic package.  Designed by Mr Miyake who is a very involved icon – not just a name on a pack.

GG: Best male fragrance bottle of all time?
KG: Jean-Paul Gaultier Le Male.

GG: Why do you think fragrances like Le Male and L’eau d’Issey Pour Homme are still so popular, years after their launch?
KG: Great package and design, both of which were the process of creativity of the designer whose name is on the box.  They’re both fragrances that are original and that can be used time and time again.

GG: So what qualities make a male fragrance a ‘classic’?
KG: Quality. Creativity. Originality

GG: I’m terrible at hiding my feelings when I smell a new fragrance I don’t like. Are you honest  when you’re in a similar situation?
KG: Yes – if not it would cost of lot of time in wasted professional effort.  Taking a fragrance to market that does not work is criminal, not to mention a waste of  “my money”!

GG: What has been the most exciting new men’s launch of 2009?
KG:
 Paul Smith Man, created by our own British designer with much personal care and attention to detail.  Paul even took the advertising creative photos himself.

GG: As a male grooming writer I must say I have been very disappointed by the lack of inventiveness of the industry in the last few years. Nobody seems to be taking chances any more and it’s hard to see any of the new launches becoming classics. What are your views on this?
KG: There is a degree of banal and fast and dirty launches that do not portray quality or longevity, together with “copy cat” fragrances – i.e. ones that just follow the last successful smell instead of being creative.
We do see creativity and quality, though, coming from Classic brands, Terre d’Hermes for example.  Van Cleef & Arpels – Collection Extraordinaire, A-Scent by Issey Miyake, Paul Smith Man, Serge Lutens, Annick Goutal.  All have heritage and love and care in creation, together with quality in the package, bottle and juice.

GG: The last year or so has been a tough one in terms of the economy. How has the recession affected the male side of the fragrance industry?
KG: The Fragrance Industry has done well in recession and grown again.  It is not in decline.  The feel-good factor of a £400 new overcoat or a £5,000 wristwatch might not be appealing but a £40 bottle of your favourite pleasure is a wonderful and affordable “quick-fix”!

British Vogue’s December’s issue brought on a strong sense of nostalgia for me. A specific article, The Secret History of London Fashion Week, chronicled LFW from the `80s to present. After reading the piece, an abundance of emotions got my creative juices flowing, and a whirlwind of images fled through my mind. Truth be told, I had not really known LFW until recently but I remember the iridescence that fashion had as a whole. In the article, a series of designers, supermodels and buyers went into detail about the many tribulations the show endured over the years. But the focal points – Lynne Franks, a major PR Director and Stevie Smith – the mastermind behind collection Body Map, were the most inspiring. It was they who- with the exception of Vivienne Westwood and her line – were trailblazers for what London fashion was to become.

“Our LFW debut was called Cat in the Hat Takes a Tumble With the Rumblefish,” mused Smith. “We created a way of dressing using jerseys and sweatshirts that wasn’t just for skinny people, we had old, young, fat and thin on the catwalk. Even my mum.” His vision was beyond making pretty clothes and being conventional. Body Map was a breakaway from the norm other Fashion Designers were concurring with at the time. Even Franks’s concept was avant-garde “I persuaded one my clients to sponsor a tent [in Olympia] and up it went. The lawn collapsed after a few seasons and we had to move, but this marked the start of a new mood in fashion – it was fun and funky and young.”

Though it’s not quite as prestigious as fashion week in Milan or Paris, London Fashion Week is still the best place to showcase collections of both old and young. Matter of fact, London is ahead of all fashion corners for cultivating fashion design.  But the `80s and early `90s were a pivotal moment in fashion, as most designers of today who are creatively schizophrenic draw inspiration from fashion of that time. And not just from London, during the `80s fashion on a global scale became so baroque that the concept of colours and shapes held no barriers. The more abstract your dressing, the better. This was a philosophy that resonated with the fashion elite, rock stars and the hip-hop scene.

Body Map is a proven testament of playing with design concepts waywardly, and boldly. There’s fierce determination to make a statement in the collections. A great prime example of this is this piece worn by Uma Thurman:

As we move into modern times, Body Map’s concept was applied rather unconsciously by Toronto-based fashion designer Blaine Degannes of Rain Anthology:

Considering Dagannes had no background in fashion, I reckon his fashion history was extremely limited. Maybe if he did more research, it would have been easier for him to connect the dots. A reviewer of Toronto Fashion Week (where Dagannes debuted) stated his line Caribbean influenced, I’m not sure if that’s a bad thing, but it’s good when a fashion designer is influenced (much like Stevie Smith) but their upbringings. Degannes has the right idea, just not at the right level.

I do feel sorry for the pioneers who scavenge for talent now, the problem with a lot of fashion designers (much like aspiring fashion journalists) is that they’re too consumed with being something they’re not. They’re either overly processed and pretentious or stiff and dull. But all isn’t lost.

Russian designer Alexander Terexov takes the same concept and adds a resort feel to his Spring/Summer 2010 collection.

It’s safer, and glossier. But it doesn’t stand out. It’s a collection constructed for fashion-conscious pretty girls who like pretty things.

However, my when eyes trail to UK-based Ziad Ghanem’s spring/summer 2010 collection and it gives me hope. Not just because I like punk, but because his collection is a sign of the times. With the state of the economy, we’re looking for inspiration and he gives us that by taking the Body Map concept and revitalizing it:

Very British, very fun. That’s the word! Fashion was supposed to be fun. It’s okay if historic elements are prevalent. But while art and fashion are merged together, you’re supposed to enjoy wearing the garments.

Another favorite of mine is Berlin-fashion line C.Neeon who know how to the colour and print concept seamlessly.

Bare in mind they’ve been around for a long time, but the vision was there from the beginning, that’s why they’ve come this far.

Admittedly, I have a lifetime of fashion purgatory ahead. Before allowing my inner fashion feline to emerge, I held on to what I thought I knew: Balenciaga, Yves Saint Laurent and Balmain. I liked what I thought I liked, and that was what I knew, but thanks to discovering Body Map, the eccentric world of British fashion has given me a new outlook. Not just for what to wear, but for my fashion life in general.

I think it’s good that shes doing it with a designer rather than on her own, because when musicians try it it often turns out bad…Yes i’m talking about you Victoria Beckham!

On second thought Lindsay was working with a designer as well and that was still a disaster!

Melissa Shoes is no stranger in working with famous designers. Recently, Melissa Shoes previewed  an exquisite pair of pin-heel  sandals designed by Jean-Paul Gaultier which personally I find, average and normal.

Then came Vivienne Westwood collabo with Melissa Shoes – LOVE IT. Leave it to Westwood to make the most cutest and fashionable – candy-colored, bow-topped, and made of recycled plastic, to boot! This is way better than the JPG’s normal-looking strappy pin-heels as it’s not easy looking for rain boots that are this charming.  They look so delicious and priced at about 84€ a pair. Now everyone can look pretty in the rainy days to come. Check it out -

Carrie Underwood in Theia – I really love this look. Sometimes I get tired of the whole Grecian look,  but then again I love the one-shouldered dress. AND THOSE SHOES! – 4.5

Alicia Keys in Giorgio Armani – The dress is fantastic. And the shoes are okay. The jewelry is a bit much and the hair can go… This look had potential to be a 5, but because of everything else I’m just going to give it a 3.

Leona Lewis in Vivienne Westwood – 2 Vivienne Westwood is great, sure. I’d love to see Leona try some other designers now too. NO to those boots.

Shakira in Versace. 5! I really love this dress. I don’t really like the shoes… but my love for the dress overrules. Shakira looks really great in this dress. It was perfect for her.

Demi Lovato in Jenny Packham – 3.5. I like that Demi went very natural for this look everything from her shoes, to her dress color, to her makeup. It washes her out a little bit, but it’s nice to see her clean up and not look so out there. The dress is okay. The neckline is too much for me.

Selena Gomez in Talbot Runhof. 4. This is a very age-appropriate dress for her. She looks cute!

Kelly Clarkson. 1.5. oh noooo Kelly this dress is so unflattering and is a bejeweled disaster ahh

Kristen Bell in Christian Cota – 4. She looks great! You don’t see a dress like that everyday. Kristen made a midriff showing dress classy instead of trashy.
