December, with the light in the Northern hemisphere at its lowest, for me always has been a time for retreat and introspection:  On december 16th – at the birth of the new moon  – I felt like retreating into a cave.

This year -more than previous years – the dark weeks are a time of inner transformation.  In my real human life however, I spend two days writing Christmas-cards, I visited relatives and worked long hours on websites which needed finishing, sometimes chatting and tweeting in between, some walking in the snow and taking pictures.

Full moon this year 2009 will be on new years eve: an awakening call.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

There is still a lot of snow on the ground from yesterday’s winter storm so I decided to not waste this precious opportunity and take advantage of it . I decided to take Vixen (Carol) and Snowflake (Winter Purezza) back outside for more pictures, and I also decided to grab Joyette (Requiemart Custom) and Emma (Hello Kitty) outside for photos.

Enough talk unto the photos- Snowflake sneaking up on Vixen..

For those wondering about the snowman he is actually cookie jar I received as a gift for Christmas a few years back, while I didn’t really need anymore cookie jars (I have four others) this seemed like a good opportunity to actually get some use out of him.

My Winter Purezza, Snowflake is actually my favorite of the seasonal Purezzas. I am somewhat shocked at myself that I never brought her outside before this to play in the snow. She was actually one of the last two pullips I needed to complete my collection and I bought her along with my Vivien, Marilyn from Bobagirl, one of my quasi-pullip idols (she had previously collected all of the pullips) when she decided to downsize her collection.

I know Snowflake is kind of an odd name for her but at the time it seemed to be the only name to really suit her.

I bought my Carol- Vixen a while ago but never really took many pictures of her. Carol is so overlooked in the pullip world, I am not sure if it is because she always seems to look a bit melancholy or if it is because her stock is downright bizarre. The bright side of there not being a whole lot of Carol love is that I got Vixen here, with full stock for a steal.

If my Jouet was home I would have taken her out for photos unfortunately she is still at Requiemart’s house while she is finishing up Joel (Jouet Taeyang), since I couldn’t photograph Jouet herself I decided to photograph the next best thing Joyette (Custom Jouet Pullip).

She really looks like an ice princess all dressed in white.. She is wearing a rather odd mix of Vivien’s (coat) , Jouet’s (bear hood), Clarity’s (top), Ala’s (boots), Raphia’s (socks + skirt) stock pieces.

The final member of the pullip snow day league was my newest arrival Emma (Hello Kitty). Although a bit under-dressed for the weather (in blythe Friendly Freckles’ stock) she had great gusto when it came time to play in the snow.

I loved how the snow looked in her mohair wig, it just had this almost magical quality to it.

The Story: Dr. Light, Vixen, and Gypsy battle the Black Lantern versions of the former Dr. Light, Vibe, and Steel.

What’s Good: Mark Bagley continues to satisfy me with his output on Justice League.  All told, his characters have a cartoony, accessible, Saturday morning feel that’s very comfortable with the series, and unlike last month, there aren’t any botched facial expressions.

I also did rather enjoy Vibe and Steel’s continual calling out of Vixen and Gypsy, essentially calling them underpowered C-listers that no one cares about.  It only hurts, because, well, it’s kind of true.  It’s also in many ways an apt criticism of the JLA comic and a great segue into next month’s major roster shuffle.

What’s Not-so-Good: This may very well be the most offensive single comic I’ve read all year.

Having a group of three monstrous males terrorize and spend most of an issue overpowering three women is a naturally problematic scenario.  Indeed, when Gypsy spends most of the issue literally cowering and tearing up before a hulking, muscle-bound male character, that scenario becomes all the more glaring.

But, apparently, that sort of sexist terrorization and exploitation is exactly what Robinson is after.  The battle between Kimiyo and the former Dr. Light, which takes the most number of pages this month, is atrocious and grossly offensive.  Apparently, Dr. Light is a very unique Black Lantern.  You see, he doesn’t seem to actually want Kimiyo’s heart (and never once mention sit).  No, he just wants to rape her.  While he never mentions ripping hearts, he does mention his desire to rip her clothes off.  The fight is just one big rape fantasy.  Light continually uses rapist lingo, talking about Kimiyo’s own desire to be violated.  There’s even a VERY creepy page where he lecherously advances on an unconscious Kimiyo.

Oh, and to make it even better, Kimiyo has “degrading clothing” syndrome, as her outfit slowly burns away all issue until she’s completely nude by issue’s end.  Great.

Unfortunately, Robinson can’t stop at rape fantasies.  He also brings outright racism into the picture.  Dr. Light assails Kimiyo’s Japanese heritage, continually referring to her as a good “Geisha,” before making sweeping, hateful generalizations about the Japanese people that includes calling them all “drones.”

So we’ve got rape and racism in a JLA issue.  What the hell was Robinson thinking?  More aptly, how could any editor sign off on this?  It’s shameful, tasteless, inappropriate, unnecessary, and disgusting.

Meanwhile, Vibe is a painful, inconsistent read.  At times, he’s a standard bad guy, and at others, he’s a cringe-inducing, out-dated, cheesy, ethnic caricature that just isn’t funny.

The pacing of the issue also has severe problems.  The transitions are not only poor, they’re also non-existent.  We flow from scene to scene, and fight to fight, with neither links nor segues.  More or less every transition is jarring and sudden.  We’re just tossed around for 22 pages.

Even both good qualities about the comic have their downsides.  While the art is enjoyable, Bagley’s backgrounds are bland and often flat-out non-existent.  Most of the time it’s just flares of light or inky darkness, with very little else.

Meanwhile, the characters’ being C-listers unfortunately brings attention to the inherent flaws of the Blackest Night formula, that being that it really is a “formula.”  Old characters show up as a “surprise,” say a bunch of nasty things, detect emotions, then try to rip out hearts.  The fact that these are relatively minor heroes means that Robinson doesn’t really have the strong character histories needed to mask how derivative it all is.

Conclusion: Utterly appalling.  Don’t even give this a chance.

We haven’t had any much snow this season, before today the most we had was about 3-4 inches of snow. We finally had some serious snow, it started snowing last night and snowed through into the morning leaving an impressive 14 inches of snow behind. Being from New England and all, I am kind of used to having lots of snow during the winter I much prefer the snow to just the blistering cold we have had the last few days. It’s finally starting to look like Christmas is going to be here soon.. I attended a Christmas party last week and they had a raffle, all of the stuff was Christmas themed and there wasn’t particularly anything I wanted then I spotted a basket that had a sleigh in it that would surely fit pullip. I put all my raffle tickets in the box for the gift basket with the sleigh just to lose, fortunately the person who won the basket came with me and they only wanted the other stuff in the basket so they surrendered the sleigh to me mwahahaha….. I have been waiting for it to snow ever since.

The sleigh is just about the perfect size for two pullips, next year by the time Christmas rolls around I am hoping to assemble a small army of mini-pullip Rudolphs to pull the sleigh. I chose my Carol- Vixen and my Winter Purezza- Snowflake as my two sleigh-riders as they seemed the most suited to the occasion.

I usually don’t get into the habit of making New Year’s Resolutions because I claim that I am too young to do such things. However, I thought of a new idea, instead of coming up with new things that I want to/should do over the new year of 2010, I will instead tell you what I plan to NOT do over this year. I find it better that if I can acknowledge the things that I sure as hell am not gonna do, then I will feel more accomplished when I do do the things that I wanted to do. It’s more interesting this way.

1. Be nicer. I am already pretty damn nice to people, so if I go on being any nicer I may seriously become a doormat. No thank you.

2. Skydiving. I really cannot tell you what would be MORE terrifying than free-falling from an airplane that is thousands of meters in the air and not knowing if my parachute will inflate correctly. I took physics. I know what free-falling without a working parachute can do to a person. Again, no thank you.

3. Travel to another country Not because I’m apathetic or pompous. It’s because I lack the time and the money to allow me to take such an adventure and I forsee 2010 as being the same way. However, as soon as these two elements are in abundance (moreso the latter than the former), Au revoir les Etats Unis, et bonjour la France!

4. Go to a spa That is like the utmost anti-girly thing to say. That and I don’t like diamonds. The thing is, I can’t stand massages. They tickle me more than they relax me. And yes, I know that there are a lot of other things a spa can offer other than a personal massage (however, if my masseuse is a hot guy with a chiseled body, then I may think twice…), but none of those things are remotely interesting for me.

5. Get a mani and/or pedi I bite my fingernails and toenails. ‘Nuf said. (I’m kidding about one of those!)

6. Diet Yeah. I said it. God knows I’ll try to but won’t really commit to it, because I lack the will power. I’m definitely not fat/chubby, some may even use the word ’skinny’ when describing me. I just want to tone up a bit and eat healthier. As a college student I tend to get into these bad habits regarding eating and I want to change some of those. That is something that I WILL do. Maybe eat the rainbow everyday? There’s a start!

7. Spend more than I can afford This seems simple and it should make it onto everyone’s New Year’s Resolution list, but I am so frugal that I am pretty sure this will not happen to me. I am probably one of the cheapest people you’ll find. Huzzah!

8. Get a car *Sigh* this is something that I really wish wasn’t on the list, but I’m afraid that I won’t be getting a car anytime soon. I still do not have a license (at age 20) and thus am pretty certain that there will be no car in my future. There’s no way that this is going to change.*sigh x2*

9. Attend a live taping of the Oprah show I swear her system of getting tickets is rigged. I’ve tried and my mother has tried and the fact that I’m putting this on here means it has yet to work. I’ll keep trying but I am pretty damn sure it’s not gonna work. I think it would be cool to sit in on a taping of the Oprah show and possibly get something? Maybe?

10. Appear on a game show My all-time dream would be to appear on the game show Deal or No Deal. That show takes no talent at all except for a single guess, which is PERFECT for me. It’s free money and I could always make use out of it should I win some. But seeing as how getting onto a game show is next to impossible, I’ve resigned myself to actually working for a living. Darn.

So. There you have it. The 10 things I WILL NOT do during the year 2010. I’m sure there’s so much more, but I’ll truncate it to just 10.

Why did Kimiyo just call Doctor Light Curry at the end of this comic like he was Aquaman? That is some bad editing and the kind’ve sloppy editing and mix ups that have plagued this title since it began. Not really forgivable. All-in-all this was a rather forgettable issue where neither of the creators showed how good they could be.

I have to say that this was an intense issue of Justice League where the heroes are emotionally and physically taken to their breaking points by the Black Lanterns. It dealt with race and rape. And it was very uncomfortable to read and almost mean-spirited in the way that Robinson’s Cry for Justice has been. I can’t say that I object to the subject matter but just in the way it was handled, I really felt like Kimiyo Hoshi was being raped in this issue as I was reading this. If not physically, at least on an emotional level and why the hell did Bagley have to draw her running around naked? That was unnecessary and disturbing. I don’t mind the subject matter but I felt like the entire story had no light – it was completely cruel.

This week is a breakthrough of sorts, for me. I had a conversation that finally eased some guilt and created closure from my last relationship. I felt free when I woke up on Saturday, and it was a great feeling.

I finished my last semester of undergrad with good grades. I was social three nights in a row (and it wasn’t even painful). I also, and I know this will sound unbelievable, but I plucked my own eyebrows. for the first time. Yeah, yeah, you can snicker.

But do you want to know why I plucked those eyebrows? Because on Friday, I have to be a family-friendly-version of a vixen. for the office Christmas party. The idea is to play with the idea of the reindeer names. Dasher, for example, is a little boy dressed in the Incredibles uniform who runs into the room. Antlers and a jingle-bell necklace are a required part of the costume.

The purple boa is for my costume only, if you can picture that.

The problem is that I am a shy, cute girl. In other words, vixen I am not. I am Iris from The Holiday, but I am not yet to the point where I am “knockout” at the end of the movie (or to the point where I have an adorable Jack Black asking me out on a date).

Except, Kate Winslet is always gorgeous. But you get the point.

When I think of a woman that is sexy, seductive, basically the epitome of vixen, well, I think of the six women in the picture up there. Gorgeous hair, lovely figure, clear face, and perfect makeup. Definitely not me. I don’t even wear makeup most of the time and I have a lot of work ahead of me to make that lovely figure happen.

But, today I made a decision. I am going to wear my pretty red dress (empire waist does wonders to create a great shape) and maybe learn to walk in heels. I’ll do my hair (straight or curly, who knows?) and get up early enough to put on some makeup. Maybe I can fool myself into thinking that I am like one of those women who gets called beautiful for a few hours.

Either way, I am going to walk with a spring in my step and remember that, like Iris, it is time to get some gumption.

One of the things about being the father of an adult daughter, is the constant parade of her friends. My daughter is beautiful to me in the true father-daughter sense, with no funny business. I may write stories about that kinda stuff, but I would never in a million years engage in that behavior. I know incest intrigues me, but not like that. Have you heard about the new lovebugs coming to join our rescue this weekend?

Sweet Mardi Gras has been in rescue for several weeks, but is finally journeying to Richmond for foster care!

Seriously, how could anyone not fall in love with a sweet face like this?

Mardi is less than a year old and is most likely an Australian Shepherd/Labrador Retriever mix. He’s up to date on vaccines, neutered, crate trained & 90% housebroken. My mom has been fostering him for the past week and says he is just a real delight. He gets along brilliantly with all of her dogs (all 6 of them), has no food/toy aggression issues, is interested in the cats but only as friends, and would do very well in a family.

Our other new additions include this tiny little litter of what appear to be Catahoula Puppies … we’ll see once they get here! Their names are Comet (m), Cupid (m), Donner (m) & Blitzen (f). They are approximately 5 weeks old so we are going to work very hard to keep these little darlings healthy and happy & with full bellies on their transport so that we can spoil them senseless once they arrived in Virginia!

And last, but certainly not least, we have Mr. Vixen. A hilarious name for a cute and quirky little dude. Vixen looks to be a ‘houla mix and the shelter has him listed at 10-12 weeks. I’d wager that Santa’s little elf is probably a little closer to 6-7. Either that or he’s a chihuahua mix – regardless, we’ll take him! ;)

Foster Homes Needed - We are currently at our foster-pup maximum and will not be able to take any more dogs into rescue until the pups we currently have are adopter OR until we have more foster homes. That being said, if you’ve ever considered fostering …. now’s the time! Even if you can only foster a dog or puppy temporarily through the holidays, until Christmas, or until the kids go back to school – that’s okay – we still need you! Fostering is a great way to “get a puppy fix”, find out if a dog is right for you, or see how your other pets react to having a new dog in the home. I have set myself a challenge for this week…. To look good on a very tight budget; everything from freebies to cheapies (75L$ or less).

It has been over a year since I first rezzed into SL, so this week-long series will be both fun and challenging.

Hi there!

I know that I am late with this post but I have very tired lately, and wanted to really relax over the weekend. One thing I did do was take the photos for this blog.

Another weekend, so another Double Dose, and this time, I have 2  further outfits made up from the box of goodies given to me by Soma Mayo.

I was in the mood for denim, and so created this look. The jacket with shirt was a group gift from Soma. I really like nicely gradient shaded textures, and the length of the jacket is just right.  The jeans are fabulous, great shading with the seams darker while the rest is faded and worn…. just like a pair I used to own in RL .  Good work, Soma!!!!! Love your jeans

The neckerchief I got from my friend Evie’s store for 60L$!!!!! She has some nice tanktops and other stuff available at her store and also on Xstreet SL.

In contrast to the denim, I tried to create a sexy club outfit. Hope you like it.

It is not very often that I  wear a tattoo, but I chose one that I have had in my inventory for some time, from Inks & Kinks. I love roses, not becasue of the scent that some have, but the many shapes and colours you can get.
