This was my first tournament at the Duelling Grounds so I didn’t really know what to expect. It was listed as a 350 SR4 but when I went there we ended up doing casterkill all day. Makes sense since its pretty tough for most factions to hold multiple sections or points with 2-3 jacks a piece! Anyway without any more delay, here is how the day went!

Game 1

First game was against a Haley list, I think the opponents name was Brian. He was a new player having only been in the game 3 or 4 months I believe, but we both knew Haley was going to be tough to get through. Anyways here’s his list…

Haley loves her arcnode, Centurion is a rock star, and the Ironclad fills out the points nicely. With TB up he easily has a longer threat range than I do. Arcane Shield is a solid spell on the Ironclad or Lancer bumping their armour up to 21, but it is especially nasty on the Cent bumping its armour up to 24…ouch. Haley has some offensive spells she can annoy me with before she gets her jacks into melee as well.

Against this list I chose the Saeryn list. Hopefully I can run to engage his stuff with my feat up so I can still get the first strike on him.  My Angels should be able to take down a heavy a turn, so even if his other heavy can get a turn of beatdown on one of my Angels, he shouldn’t be able to take it out since one will be covered by Respawn and the other will be ASed (gotta love Mirror Magic). My Shredder will play bodyguard for Saeryn, always making sure she gets her regular dose of Tenacity and get in the way of anything that tries to charge her.

He gets first turn, sets all his stuff up in a line and marches up and puts AS on the Ironclad and runs the Lancer a bit farther than everyone else. I would have thought AS would be better on the Cent but either way his heavies have tough armour.

My first turn I pretty much did the same thing. I moved my stuff up with the Angel with Respawn a bit further ahead of the pack. The board is pretty much clear up the middle so this was going to be an interesting battle. No forests in sight and there’s a patch of rough terrain to my right but it would take too much effort to move the battle over there.

His second turn he continued the advance, checking his control area with nothing inside to cast TB to affect. Haley hides behind a wall of two heavies, the lancer is slightly ahead of the pack, looking ready to arc some spells.

My second turn I advance with Saeryn and pop the feat, catching everyone and then cast tenacity on herself and use mirror magic to copy AS for an Angel. Both angels runs, one engages the Centurion on the left while the other engages both the Ironclad and Lancer on the right. Shredder also runs to engage the Lancer, making it tough for it to get to Saeryn for arcing. Saeryn sits on 1 fury but Haley will have a tough time getting the arcnode or a clear shot.

His third turn is spent pretty much doing nothing. He moves Haley around the melee engagement to get closer to Saeryn, tries a shot but misses because he forgot to TB before shooting. Still learning the game but he won’t make that mistake anymore. All the jacks just stand in place, ready for my first strike.

On my third turn the Angel engaging the Cent takes a thrust and hits, boost damage and does some significant damage. Buy attack, hits, and then boost damage again. The shield is gone at this point so it should be easier to take down. The other Angel disengages the Lancer but moves to engage both the Ironclad and Cent. Thrust on the Cent, boost damage, and with that the spear and movement are gone. I bought an attack on the Ironclad but it missed. Shredder goes rabid and takes an attack on the lancer but doesn’t do much. Saeryn casts tenacity on herself and then moves left, inching towards the down Cent, trying to create as much distance from her and Haley as possible.

He needed to do some big damage on this fourth turn if he wanted to make a comeback. Haley gives 2 focus to the Ironclad, upkeeps AS and saves 4 for TB. She goes first, casts TB then takes a shot at Saeryn. She needs a 9 to hit and misses. He then pops his feat and takes another shot. She hits this time but only does 5 damage, I transfer it to the Angel that is not engaged with the Ironclad. I have no more fury but I should be ok since he has no more ranged threats or melee threats in range of Saeryn. The Ironclad beats on the Angel, taking out its spirit but everything else is still doing ok. The Lancer finished off the body but can’t manage to kill it to get rid of Respawn.

My fourth turn I upkeep both AS and Respawn. Saeryn moves closer to the Cent and then heals the Angel 2 and casts tenacity on herself. Both angels are fully functional and dismantle the Ironclad while the one with AS engages the Lancer since the other one got out of its way. Shredder continues to nip away at the Lancer, making its presence known.

Fifth turn of his, he gives 3 focus to Lancer and keeps 4 for Haley. Haley advances closer again to Saeryn and pops another shot at her, another 4 damage transferred to the Angel with AS. Lancer tries to get past the ASed Angel’s ARM but doesn’t hurt it enough to disable anything.

This turn saw both the Angels taking down the Lancer and the Shredder running to try to get closer to Haley but coming short. Saeryn can’t move out of Haley’s charge range so she moves closer to the Angels. If Haley wants to Charge Saeryn she is gonna be within range of the Angels next turn. She casts tenacity on herself and camps 4 fury.

Haley casts TB and charges into melee with Saeryn! Saeryn now has defense 14 so Haley needs 8s to hit. He boosts to hit the first one and connects, so I transfer to the ASed Angel. Two focus left so he buys 2 attacks, hits with one which gets transferred to the same Angel, taking out its mind. My turn…

Saeryn doesn’t upkeep anything and started with a Breathstealer on Haley, lowering he defense by 2. She then starts to attack Haley in combat, double boosting all melee attacks for a grand total of 6 damage. Both Angels fly in with boosted thrusts for the win.

What a slow game! Every time I face Haley it is always such a gruelling battle. Being able to get first strike was key I think, if I had not taken that Centurion down I was in big trouble. With a possible critical sustained attack my Angels would have fallen quite easily. Haley did all of the damage on Saeryn herself but with the transfer mechanic but she couldn’t produce enough damage to get it done all by herself.

Game 2

The second game was against a Trollbloods player, Ian was his name I believe. I didn’t know anything about his play experience but by the way he knew his stuff, I was sure he wasn’t a new player at all. Here is what he brought to the table…

Good old Troll beats list. The Impaler is such a solid Troll warbeast and the others are pretty beaty. I have always been scared of that crit slam and especially since a young Troll player by the name of Connor at the LGS crit slammed my Revenger into a Wrack. So he boosts the damage for 4 dice, taking out the shield and then some. Then the wrack explodes on the poor Revenger taking it from fully healthy to disabled… ouch!

Anyways I decided to take the Saeryn list. Basic plan is try to get the first strike on his beasts. Even with the Axer’s animus he can at best match my threat range with the Impaler. If he plays it cautious I can do shenanigans by overloading his beasts with fury or force him to cut himself for fury. With a mainly melee based force the feat will once again provide me a turn without any retaliation. The only thing I am really worried about is the Earthborn and Borka.

I get first turn so I deploy in a line and run my stuff up, Angels ahead with the Respawned one slightly further up, Shredder no running too far and Saeryn following with Tenacity on herself.

He moves up with Borka casting Moshpit, the Axer in front of Borka, Earthborn to my left and the Impaler to my right.

My second turn I moved both Angelii  ahead, the one on the right taking a shot at the Impaler doing minimum damage and the one with Respawn staring down the Earthborn. Shredder moves up and puts tenacity on the Angel that’s closer to the Impaler and Saeryn moves up and puts tenacity on the Shredder and herself.

His second turn he goes for the crit slam…hits but no crit! Does some solid damage but the Angel is still fully functional. The Earthborn moves up beside a patch of rough terrain to get +2 inches of movement next turn, probably thinking he is safe because my Angel is on the other side of that rough patch. Borka and Axer move up the middle a bit more.

My third turn is where the action really ramps up. The Impaler is charged by an Angel with the initial attack, boost to hit, no problem. After another attack with boosted damage the Impaler goes down, Borka reaves the fury. The Angel killed a model so it uses it`s Ravenous movement to shuffle to the left and closer to the Earthborn. Saeryn then moves up and feats to catch the whole army. She also casts a boosted Equilibrium on the Angel taking off its 4 fury and filling up his Axer. He’s now looking at 7 fury on the board so he has to take at least one threshold check next turn. She camps 2 fury just in case Borka tries to bomb her. The Shredder looks sideways and casts tenacity on Saeryn. The other Angel then charges into the Earthborn with a boosted attack, hitting and doing some solid damage. It then buys another attack and boosts the damage. The Angel is bumped back due to Moshpit but doesn`t take a freestrike due to the feat.

He takes all the fury off the Earthborn and one off the Axer, unfortunately it passes it`s check so nothing fun happening this turn. The Axer backs off to screen Borka and the Earthborn looks at the Angel wondering why it isn`t allowed to hit it.

Fourth turn sees both the Angels thrusting into the Earthborn, taking it out. The second one that gets the kill has Respawn on it so it uses the Ravenous move to try to block the charge lane to the other Angel. Shredder provides Tenacity to Saeryn while they both advance. Saeryn heals the damaged Angel a bit but still camps 2 fury just in case Borka has something up his sleeve.

He decides to drop Moshpit since he realized Wings will negate it`s effects. The Axer and Borka charge into the Angel killing it, but it respawns outside of their melee range. Borka only has 2 fury to transfer with so he’s in big trouble.

The fifth turn saw the first Angel taking the Axer down to low health while the other one takes down Borka. He transfers the first hit but there’s is too much spill over damage and the second attack finished the job. Angels FTW again.

I haven`t played my Legion in a while but DANG, these Angels rip apart beasts and jacks with way too much ease. Saeryn`s feat makes them even worse! If he had gotten that crit slam off it would have delayed me a turn but the duel Angels are just too efficient in this format, it’s scary.

Game 3

Third game was against Khador and a player named Charles. We had been chatting a bit earlier about random PP tidbits and now it was time to throwdown. He was running Vlad and it was a very scary force indeed. Here is his list…

Beast kills things dead, Destroyer softens them up on approach while being no slouch in melee and everyone knows Blood of Kings Vlad very well! Vlads feat doubles the speed of all his jacks so this was going to be a very tough game for me. Not only was his stuff faster on approach, they could hit pretty freakin hard too! Signs and Portents only adds to the pain I was going to endure during this match…

I chose the Saeryn list once again. Not exactly sure on the battle plan, I just wanted to bait his models out with my Respawn Angel and hopefully bring Beast down before he could do too much damage to my forces.

He got first turn so he ran Beast on my left, ran the Destroyer on my right and Vlad up the middle with BoK up.

My first turn I put Respawn on one of the Angels and moved Saeryn up with Tenacity. Everything else ran up the board, with the Respawned Angel going up a bit further than the other two beasts.

His turn he gives two focus to the Destroyer puts up Signs and Portents. Beast runs and the Destroyer connects with an Angel, dealing some big damage. Good second turn for him!

My second turn I moved everything up again and hit the Destroyer with a Breathstealer. I wish I could have gotten Beast as well but he was half an inch short…really makes me want a Seraph right now! Saeryn heals the Angel up a bit and the Shredder puts Tenacity on her and stands in front of her blocking any charge lane. I was trying to bait Beast in but just ended up taking some potshots at the Destroyer, dealing minimum damage.

He starts his third turn with a bang! Vlad gives 3 focus to Beast and casts Sign and Portents! He pops his feat so now Beast can charge 11 inches with reach for a 13 inch threat range! He could have put boundless charge on it for even more threat but this was all he needed to get to the Angel without Respawn unfortunately. He charged it then bought 3 more attacks with the axe to take it out of the game, my first casualty of the day! The destroyer then clipped Saeryn with a bombard but not enough to force me to transfer it.

With one Angel down my chances were looking bad. Saeryn moved up and feated and then put Breathstealer on the Destroyer again. The lone Angel approached Beast and gave him a good thrust, dealing lots of damage and then buying another attack, boosting damage for some more decent damage. The Shredder takes on the Destroyer to prevent any movement towards my Angel, dealing a little damage surprisingly.

His next turn Vlad put up BoK and moved towards the fight, feeling confident that one Angel is down. The destroyer is given 2 focus and takes a freestrike to take another shot at Saeryn, this time hitting and dealing some good damage. I can`t afford to transfer it so I will have to deal with it. Beast stands there ready to take more damage from the Angel.

With my fourth turn I move Saeryn to Breathstealer the Destroyer again and put Respawn on the Angelius while healing the Angel a bit. The Angel takes out Beast while the Shredder continues to annoy the Destroyer.

His turn, Vlad slaughters the Angel, so it respawns in front of him just out of melee, just to be annoying. The Destroyer is given focus and destroys the Shredder with ease. It’s just Saeryn and her Angel now.

My turn I used Respawn on the Angel and saved the rest of the fury. I can`t afford to cut myself with the low amount of health I had. The Angel takes out the Destroyer and uses Ravenous to get in Vlads way. Vlad has one wreck marker on each side and the Angel in the middle so he has to go through the Angel to get to Saeryn.

Vlad use BoK and slaughters the Angel, it respawns behind him to get a backstrike for next turn, if there is one.  Now Charles goes for a gambit, he casts Razor Wind at Saeryn, needing a 9 to hit…just barely does it with a boost. Last focus he uses to boost damage and he needs an 8 to kill…he rolls 12! Just enough so even if I transfer I am done!

Wow Beast, Signs and Portents and a BoK Vlad are tough to beat at this point level. I think I had the right army for the job; he just positioned his pieces better. When I went for the double Breathstealer I misjudged distance by a tiny bit, and I think that was where I lost the positioning game against him. That really was a great game, really close down to the end!

Game 4

Last game of the day was against another Troll army, very similar to the one I faced earlier on. I was playing against one of the local PGers James Tubbs. Heres his list…

Exact same list as before except with a Mauler instead of the Earthborn. Since I had no chance at first place anymore I went with the Rhyas list. Still a solid list and dangit I wanna play my 12 Shredders in the tournament! Basic game plan is to create too many small threats so Rhyas can find a hole to the enemy warlock and decapitate him! If she can`t finish the job, the hop scotching Shredders should.

He got first turn so he put up Moshpit and advanced his Trolls up, Impaler on the right, Axer on the left and the Mauler was playing bodyguard.

Shredders move up, 5 of them use rabid to go through some rough terrain Rhyas advances and puts Tenacity on herself and 4 other Shredders.

His next turn the Axer moves up behind some rough terrain to head into some of the Shredders while the Impaler uses Farstrike and hits one of the Shredders but no crit. It does some decent damage taking out one aspect from the Shredder. Borka moves up while the Mauler moves up as well.

My second turn I healed some Shredders up and cast Tenacity on Rhyas and moved her up some more. The Shredders advanced in two zigzagged ranks to setup for the feat next turn.

The next turn Borka uses the Axer animus on the Axer and it charges into two Shredders, taking one of them out and dealing good damage to the other. The Impaler moves up and gets the crit slam on one Shredder, slamming it into another one. Borka moves up and bombs a Shredder, bouncing it into one behind it tagging a bunch in the blast. Only the one directly hit takes big damage. The Mauler moves up right beside Borka, which is perfect for my turn…

Rhyas goes first and pops her feat and charges Borka. He forgot that she had acrobatics but he camped a good amount of fury. Rhyas slices and dices and manages to kill off the Axer with transfers before using her last attack on the Pyg, killing it and going invisible. Now it’s Shredder time! Shredder 1 comes up with rabid and nibbles for a damage roll of 10+3D6 on Borka, hits him twice then uses the last attack to hit the Mauler and teleport to the other side of it. Moshpit pushes the Shredder back and it takes a freestrike from the Mauler killing it, Rhyas then reaves the fury. Shredder 2 comes up with rabid and nibbles for 11+3D6, teleports to other side of Mauler but no freestrike is elected this time. Shredder 3 comes up with rabid and nibbles for 12+3D6 etc etc etc… Shredder number 7 comes up to with rabid and nibbles for 16+3D6 finishes the job.

By the end of it Borka was out of fury and only had the Mauler with a little health left. Those Shredders can get nasty really fast if you can get enough into B2B with someone. This really gets brutal with the teleporting that Rhyas grants. Good game and those Shredders really pulled the heavy lifting in that match. I didn’t really get to use the popcorn tactic but the hopscotch is just as deadly if not more IMO.

Summary

The power of duel Angels really took it to the house this tourney. Saeryn’s feat did exactly what it was supposed to do and the Shredder was just a bonus. I was surprised at how effective the teleporting Shredders were and I am now happy to have finally run a Rhyas popcorn list before MKII and the possible changes to it.

That Khador list really was tough as nails, with Vlad making everything a threat under Signs and Portents and making his jacks just brutally fast. All in all I was happy with my performance, no huge tactical mistakes and I ended up getting second due to Strength of Schedule and VPs so I got my first Privateer coin which is cool, met some new gamers at a different store which is even cooler. They are pretty good guys there and I wouldn’t mind coming back for another tournament, it’s just too far away to go there on a regular basis unfortunately. Next tournament is Hammercon and my Menites are at it again! Tourney planning and battle reports to come soon…

Philadelphia, PA: 12/14/2009 - A year from now, upon the conclusion of another heartbreaking campaign, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim of Orange County, California baseball fans may well look back on this day and ask whether or not their season was lost today, some four months before opening day.

A little over two months ago the Angels were facing the Yankees for the right to represent the American League in what many Americans refer to as the World Series (though only North American teams are eligible to contend).  Today, two of the pillars of the team have departed with another, almost certain not to return.  The team’s lineup was menaced by the physical decline of it’s former star, Vladimir Guerrero, was then virtually crippled when the dynamic Chone Figgins left to sign with the division rival, Seattle Mariners two weeks ago.  Guerrero’s next stop is unknown, but so is his successor in the meat of the Angels’ batting order.

But today, perhaps the biggest blows of all fell upon the Angel’s once-vaunted pitching staff. After having lost star closer, Francisco (K-Rod) Rodriguez in the 2008-2009 offseason to free agency, reports today seem to have confirmed that the starting rotation’s resident ace, John Lackey has been snatched up by the Boston Red Sox, a perennial post-season foe.  The Red Sox, for their part, will add Lackey to a veritable stable of aces which also includes Jon Lester and, former World Series (there it is again) Most Valuable Player, Josh Beckett.

This presumably left the Angels high in the market to acquire Toronto’s Roy Halladay – the only other comparable arm on the market to that of Lackey – a dream which lasted all of fifteen minutes when the Philadelphia Phillies announced that they had a deal in principle which would allow them to acquire the former AL Cy Young Winner.  To completely twist the knife into the hearts of Los Angeles/Anaheim area baseball fans and seemingly indict the Angels’ management team as grossly incompetent and overpaid losers, the Philadelphia Phillies were only able to complete the Halladay trade by involving the aforementioned Seattle Mariners and shipping their own staff ace and former AL Cy Young Award Winner, Cliff Lee, to Seattle.

One senior Los Angeles of Anaheim club official said on condition of anonymity: “I mean, that’s it, we are like, totally – totally – screwed.  I mean, I thought (team ownder Arte) Moreno had a plan for the money we’d be saving off of Figgins, K-Rod, and Vlad, but it’s turns out, uh, that, uh, he didn’t.  So we’re pretty much shit out of luck.”  Concluded said team official, “I mean, I’m already making plans for the proverbial ‘next year’ if you smell what I am cooking.”

A report from Red Sox HQ indicated that while the team had expressed an interest in acquiring Halladay by trade that once they caught wind of a possible three-way Phillies-Mariners-Blue Jays transaction, it was simply too “badass of a move to screw over the Angels by signing Lackey” before “the [Angels] knew what had hit them.”  According to a team trainer who examined Lackey, “basically it was like eff-you for knocking us out of the playoffs in three straight.  [Red Sox GM] Theo [Epstein] from what I can tell, actually got a call last night from the Seattle front office saying they had spoken to the Phillies and they were all laughing like, ‘yo that would be MAAD funny, dog, I hate LAAofA, those poseurs’ and ‘totally dude’ and then every one seemed to be ready to hunker down and get the deals done.”

Brad Pitt has teamed up with the Summit Entertainment, the production company behind the Twilight Saga, to produce a different vampire flick.

The new project focuses on the granddaddy of all vampires … Dracula.  Entitled “Vlad”, the film (from a script by Charles Hunnam) will focus on Dracula as a young man.  Music video director Anthony Mandler is currently in negotiations to helm the project.

Gratuitous: Ha-ha-ha! Look at Nic Cage! What a douchey sell-out. This guy has like three islands. It’s a picture from The Sorcerer’s Apprentice live action film, which looks pretty dumb.

BTW, his ex-girlfriend, the mother of his child, was kicked out of one of his 20-something houses because it’s being foreclosed on and now she’s suing him for it, saying the house had been promised to her. Nic says he’s already paid her over $3 mil in child support and “No good deed goes unpunished.” Well, next time wear a condom if you don’t like baby-momma-drama, buddy.

Next for Disney

I love Disney’s classic animated films, so I’m always interested in what’s next for them. (I don’t love stupid live-action remakes of classic Disney films that star Nic Cage, however.) Turns out it’s Rapunzel. Mandy Moore will be the voice of the title character. It sounds like the traditional plot will be used. It’s a musical (of course!) and will be shown in 3D. It’s slated to come out next fall. One more white princess to add to the bunch!

Inglourious Basterds comes out on DVD this week. I can’t wait to get it! It’s one of my favorite films of the year, along with Up! and Star Trek (already got both on BluRay). I also loved Where the Wild Things Are and Watchmen, for the record. (Though Watchmen came out last year, right?)

Brad Pitt is producing a film called Vlad with Summit Entertaiment (They did the Twilight films) about Dracula when he was still known as Vlad the Impaler. They want the film to be “a visually edgy and radical period movie”. Sounds pretty sick (in the good way).

I’m very sorry to say that Happy Feet 2 is in production, with Elijah Wood and Robin Williams signed on. Remember how I said Robin Williams should no longer be allowed to make movies? Well, it’s still true. Happy Feet was one of the most obnoxious films I’ve ever seen, and Robin Williams was big part of that. Oh, I can’t wait to soap-box all over this film when it’s time for it to be released.

Here’s the trailer for Sorcerer. It’ll be about as a good a film as Transformers or National Treasure, which isn’t good. But reviews are for later…

I am the one, not Vlad, who put two Russian Dwarf Hamster into mother’s bed when I am being mad at her many years ago.

Until she die, she believe was Vlad.

The production company founded by American actor Brad Pitt will produce, in collaboration with Summit Entertainment, the feature film “Vlad”, inspired by the legends surrounding Count Dracula.

This project film will benefit from a script by actor Charlie Hunnam, while directing the film will be Anthony Mandler, a popular music video director who has already worked with Rihanna and Eminem.

“Vlad” will present the story of young prince Dracula, anticipating the rise of future ruler Vlad the Impaler, the Wallachian monarch behind the myth of Dracula. Summit Entertainment hopes to make “a bold film about a radical period in history”.

Summit Entertainment wants even more vampire movies. The studio is developing a new “action-oriented” take on Dracula, currently in the form of a script written by actor Charlie Hunnam called Vlad. Brad Pitt is also producing the project with Dede Gardner through his Plan B Entertainment. They’ve also hired music video director and photographer Anthony Mandler to helm Vlad; this will be his feature directing debut. The story centers on Dracula as a young prince, when he was better known as Vlad the Impaler, the man behind the Dracula myth. Summit acquired this a while ago, but was developing it quietly until they found Mandler.

THR says that Mandler’s directing reel drew comparisons to Zack Snyder and his style on 300. He directed 10 of Rhianna’s videos as well as other videos for the Killers and Eminem. Warner Brothers had their eye on this project but Summit kept their hands on it. Here’s the best part: “Summit hopes to make a visually edgy and radical period movie that also will break a new talent.”

Summit is developing an action-oriented take on the most famous of the fanged: Dracula.

Summit picked up “Vlad” awhile ago, developing it quietly, but when execs saw Mandler’s reel, the project got a shot in the arm.

Mandler is a music-video director who has worked with Rhianna (helming 10 of her videos), the Killers and Eminem. Execs were wowed by the reel he prepared, which drew comparisons to Zack Snyder and his work on “300″; Summit tried to land the latter project before it ultimately was made at Warner Bros.

With “Vlad,” Summit hopes to make a visually edgy and radical period movie that also will break a new talent.

Top Cow Productions, Inc. announced today that the sixth issue of the second season of  Impaler will be cancelled with Impaler #5 and Impaler #6 combining into a single issue set for a release in early January.

International Horror Guild-nominated writer William Harms will be concluding the second season of *Impaler* in this action-packed showdown between the vampire hordes and Vlad, Victor, Wagner, and his soldiers in Washington, DC. Along the way, Victor must fight for his life and come to grips with his new destiny. As with the previous four issues, the over-sized finale issue will be painted by Matt Timson.

”Impaler has been incredibly well-received critically, with both William and
Matt pouring blood, sweat, and tears into each issue,” explained Top Cow
Publisher Filip Sablik, “When we looked at the end of this second arc, we
realized that it serviced the story better to combine these last two issues
into a single over-sized installment. While it will delay the release of
issue #5, the reading experience and the value for fans will be richer for
it.”

The six-part story line will be collected in a second trade in the spring of
2010, and the series will go on hiatus after Issue #5, which closes out the
story arc.

The new over-sized issue #5 will carry a cover price of $4.99, a full dollar
less than the combined cost of the previously solicited two single issues.

tempting the reader to come back for more…this is a great read,” says Ain’t

Conde Drácula

O mais famoso vampiro cinematográfico de todos os tempos foi inspirado no personagem central da obra de Bram Stoker. Vários atores ficaram famosos com este papel no cinema, como Maximiliam Schrek, no clássico do cinema mudo “Nosferatu, uma Sinfonia de Horror”, de 1922. Até hoje, muitas pessoas acreditam que Schrek era mesmo um vampiro na vida real! Bela Lugosi, ator de origem húngara, foi o primeiro a imprimir garbo e elegância ao vampiro, marcando para sempre a imagem do personagem. Depois de Lugosi, Christopher Lee representou Drácula em mais de uma dezena de produções, sempre com total aprovação do público. Mais recentemente, Gary Oldman também entrou para este rol sinistro com a brilhante atuação em ‘Drácula de Bram Stoker’, dirigido pelo consagrado Francis Ford Coppola.

Lestat de Lioncourt

“Eu quero interferir nas coisas, fazer as coisas acontecerem!”. Este é o lema do vampiro mais famoso da literatura depois de Drácula: o sedutor Lestat de Lioncourt, narrador de quatro livros das “Crônicas Vampirescas” de Anne Rice. Nos cinemas, o personagem foi imortalizado por Tom Cruise em “Entrevista com o Vampiro”, de 1994. Lestat foi mordido ainda adolescente por Magnus, um vampiro de 300 anos, que se autodestruiu logo depois. Com isso, os poderes seculares da criatura passaram para o rapaz, e também toda sua fortuna. Apaixonado pelo jovem Louis, ele resolveu vampirizá-lo, assim como a menina Claudia. Entretanto, Lestat foi traído pelos pupilos e quase foi destruído. Séculos depois, resolveu contar a um jornalista toda a sua história, para transformá-la num livro. Nos dias de hoje, o egocêntrico Lestat decidiu se tornar uma estrela do Rock, na história que também foi levada às telas do cinema com o título de “A Rainha dos Condenados”.

Louis

Louis du Pontlac é descrito por Anne Rice, sua criadora, como um vampiro bastante suave, de cabelos negros e face inexpressiva, exceto pelos brilhantes olhos verdes… No cinema, o super galã Brad Pitt deu vida ao narrador da “Entrevista com o Vampiro”, que foi vampirizado por Lestat (Tom Cruise) aos 25 anos, depois de uma tragédia. A família de Louis prosperava com as plantações de algodão em Nova Orleans, até que seu adorado irmão mais novo veio a falecer. Louis ficou doente e se tornou uma vítima fácil para o apaixonado Lestat. Ao contrário deste, o jovem Pontlac é um vampiro contemplativo, um intelectual desesperançado em busca de respostas para sua condição maldita. Justamente por isso, o experiente Armand (Antonio Banderas), ao conhecê-lo, afirmou que Louis era o Vampiro mais fraco que ainda caminhava sobre a face da Terra…

Vlad

Em julho de 1991, o público brasileiro conheceu o terrível Conde Vladimir Polanski, um Vampiro que marcou época na televisão brasileira. Interpretado por Ney Latorraca, Vlad era o maior dos vilões da novela “Vamp”, escrita por Antônio Calmon e dirigida por Jorge Fernando, um dos maiores sucessos entre os jovens brasileiros. Na história, a cantora de rock Natasha (vivida por Cláudia Ohana) vende sua alma ao terrível Vampiro para conquistar um lugar no estrelato. Arrependida, a Vampira procura abrigo na cidade de Armação dos Anjos, onde acaba sendo perseguida pelo cruel Vlad. A atuação de Latorraca garantiu ao sarcástico Vladimir Polanski um lugar de destaque no rol dos vilões mais carismáticos da teledramaturgia brasileira, imortalizando bordões como o infantilizado “Gotooooso!”, que Vlad exclamava todas as vezes em que sugava um pescoço.

Natasha

Natasha foi a primeira vampira da dramaturgia brasileira, e deixou muitos marmanjos de queixo caído. A personagem foi interpretada pela bela Cláudia Ohana na novela Vamp, de 1991. Ela vendeu sua alma ao terrível Conde Vladimir Polanski para alcançar o sucesso como cantora de rock. No entanto, não era uma criatura do Mal: ao contrário, logo se arrependeu do pacto com Vlad e pôs-se a fugir dele, escondendo-se na cidade de Armação dos Anjos. Lá, ela reencontrou seu amor de vidas passadas, o capitão Jonas, personagem de Reginaldo Farias. Enciumado e receoso de que esse amor medieval pudesse voltar à tona, o Conde Vladimir passou a perseguir Natasha e a família do capitão, causando trapalhadas que renderam boas risadas ao público.

Angel

Este é o Vampiro mais adorado pelas adolescentes de todo o planeta… Protagonista de um seriado de TV americano, Angel é um Vampiro sedutor que usa todo o seu charme e inteligência para ajudar os oprimidos e tirar da consciência o peso de séculos praticando o Mal… Interpretado pelo galã David Boreanaz, o herói fez sua estréia em outra série televisiva, “Buffy, a Caça-Vampiros”. Depois de ser vencido pela protagonista, o Vampiro irlandês Angelus resolveu assumir o lado do Bem e a paixão pela mocinha, interpretada por Sarah Michelle Gellar. O grande sucesso do personagem lhe garantiu uma série própria, iniciada em 1999, que mostra a trajetória do Vampiro justiceiro após deixar a amada e a pequena cidade de Sunnydale para iniciar uma carreira de investigador particular em Los Angeles… Assim como Blade, Angel se tornou uma dor de cabeça ambulante para seus irmãos de sangue, e um verdadeiro colírio para as fãs mais animadas!

Jerry Dandridge

Apesar de serem monstros da escuridão, os Vampiros quase sempre foram representados no cinema como galanteadores incorrigíveis, homens elegantes que não perdem a chance de seduzir uma bela mocinha, para só depois revelar a horrível face do mal… E Jerry Dandridge, o vilão de “A Hora do Espanto”, um blockbuster de 1985, vestiu com perfeição este estereótipo marcante dos sanguessugas. Vestido sempre de modo impecável, perfumado e polido, a máscara de Jerry (interpretado por Chris Sarandon) só não foi capaz de enganar o jovem Charley, que desconfiou desde sempre da boa educação de seu novo vizinho… Com seu estilo doce e sexy, Jerry Dandrige conseguiu vampirizar a namorada do jovem, Amy, e seu melhor amigo, Ed, além de arrancar muitos suspiros da maior parte do público feminino, especialmente quando assobiava romanticamente o clássico “Strangers in the night” (tudo a ver, não é mesmo?), de Sinatra.

David

“Dormir o dia inteiro. Zoar a noite toda. Nunca crescer. Nunca morrer. É divertido ser um vampiro!”. Foi com este lema que o sensual vampiro David conquistou diversos seguidores no filme Garotos Perdidos (Lost Boys, 1987), clássico dos anos 80 estrelado por Kiefer Sutherland. As estripulias bizarras de David e sua turma vampiresca escandalizaram uma pequena cidade da Califórnia. Como em um ritual, suas vítimas precisavam beber vinho de sangue e comer vermes. Foi o caso de Emerson (Jason Patrick), que por amor a Star (Jami Gertz), aceitou o rito de passagem e se tornou um ser das trevas, passando a integrar a primeira gangue de sanguessugas bad boys do cinema!

Bento Carneiro

“Minha vingança será maligna!” – Quem já ouviu esta frase pode até não se lembrar da origem, mas os fãs de Chico Anysio jamais vão esquecer de Bento Carneiro, o Vampiro Brasileiro, o único ser das trevas que morava “aquém do além adonde que veve os mortos”… O personagem, um vampiro atrapalhado, simplório e desprestigiado, foi criado pelo humorista na década de 80 e logo se tornou um dos maiores sucessos de seu “Chico Anysio Show”. Sempre ao lado de seu fiel escudeiro, Calunga, Bento Carneiro fez do mito do Vampiro um veículo perfeito para brincar e ridicularizar, sempre com muito bom humor, as mazelas e contradições da sociedade brasileira.

Os Monstros

Na década de 60, a CBS americana produziu um seriado para a TV que marcou toda uma geração de telespectadores. A exemplo da família Addams, da rival ABC, realizada na mesma época, os Monstros faziam piada com os costumes exóticos de uma família sinistra… O pai, Herman (Fred Gwynne), era filho de um certo Dr. Frankestein. Vovô (Al Lewis), de apenas 370 anos, gastava a maior parte de seu tempo em loucas experiências de laboratório. Os filhos eram Eddie (Butch Patrick), verdadeiro monstrinho de pele verde, orelhas pontiagudas e caninos afiados, e Marilyn (Beverley Owen/Pat Priest), loira, esbelta, de olhos verdes, isto é, um verdadeiro horror para os padrões da família! A única vampira da história era a esposa de Herman, Lily Dracula, uma dona de casa sempre preocupada com a criação dos filhos… Cancelado nos EUA em 1966, o seriado foi exibido no Brasil ainda na década de 60, e reprisado em meados da década de 70, fazendo mais sucesso do que os Addams! As trapalhadas dos Monstros divertiam pessoas de todas as idades, principalmente quando Vovô resolvia dar uma voltinha com seu veículo: um caixão sobre rodas!

Varney

Sir Francis Varney era uma criatura literalmente repugnante. Criado pelo escritor inglês James Malcolm Rymer em 1847 (antes mesmo de Drácula!) no livro “Varney, o Vampiro ou o Banquete Sangrento”, a maior arma dessa criatura era a sua feiúra! Com sua face pálida e mórbidos olhos cor-de-lata, Varney hipnotizava suas vítimas apenas com o olhar… Com unhas e dentes pontiagudos, esse vampiro arranhava as vidraças das casas, fazendo o ruído de granizo. Por isso, também ficou conhecido como o “Vampiro das Tempestades”, agindo sempre em dias chuvosos ou com neve. Esse monstro pavoroso tinha preferência por jovens indefesas, que eram atacadas sem dó nem piedade. No entanto, Varney era um ser bastante temperamental, e se dava ao luxo de se sentir desgostoso com a imortalidade de vez em quando… Então, quando os raios da lua o acordavam e seu humor não estava dos melhores, o vampiro se escondia no Monte Vesúvio, onde nenhum feixe de luz poderia despertá-lo.

Blade

Além da Vampirella, outro herói dos quadrinhos também ficou famoso pelos seus poderes vampirescos. Ele se chama Blade e nasceu das idéias de Marv Wolfman, então roteirista da Marvel Comics. A grande diferença é que o herói negro não é bem um Vampiro de verdade, e sim uma mistura de ser humano com um Filho das Trevas… Como? A origem de Blade é espetacular: sua mãe foi atacada por um Vampiro quando ainda levava o filho no útero. Dessa forma, o bebê recebeu um pouco do sangue maldito, adquirindo alguns de seus poderes especiais. Como vingança, Blade se tornou um impiedoso caçador dos sanguessugas, e para isso utiliza as geringonças high-tech criadas por Whistler, também inventor do soro que Blade usa para poder caminhar à luz do dia sem virar pó. No cinema, o herói já mereceu dois filmes que estouraram nas bilheterias, ambos protagonizados pelo blockbuster Wesley Snipes.

O Vampiro do Brooklyn

Blade, o caçador de Vampiros vivido por Wesley Snipes, não é o único representante da galeria de sanguessugas afro-americanos… Em 1995, Eddie Murphy personificou no cinema o hilariante Maximillian, único sobrevivente de uma raça de Vampiros de uma ilha caribenha. Dirigido por Wes Craven, da série “Pânico”, “O Vampiro do Brooklyn” trouxe a verve cômica do eterno tira da pesada para o mundo dos Filhos da Noite. No filme, Eddie Murphy tem que encontrar a única mulher que pode salvar sua raça da extinção. Vivida por Angela Basset, Rita mora no Brooklyn e convive com estranhos pesadelos. Sem saber, a moça é filha de um Vampiro, e por isso carrega nas veias um destino sanguinolento. Mas uma série de contratempos acontecem (como sempre!) e Maximillian tem de mover mundos e fundos para conquistar Rita e garantir a preservação de sua espécie.

Blacula

Blacula é o personagem principal do filme de mesmo nome, dirigido por William Crain em 1972. Trata-se da versão afro-americana do maior vampiro de todos os tempos. A história começa com Manuwalde (William Marshall), um príncipe africano que é vampirizado pelo próprio Conde Drácula em 1780, e acaba trancafiado dentro de seu próprio caixão. Séculos depois, dois colecionadores de arte resolvem levar a tumba para Los Angeles, onde Blacula desperta sedento de sangue! O Vampiro conhece Tina, a reencarnação de sua falecida esposa Luva, e faz de tudo para conquistar o seu amor. Mas o caminho de Blacula está cheio de obstáculos: Gordon, o melhor amigo da moça, descobre a verdade sobre Manuwalde e inicia uma verdadeira caçada ao vampiro africano…

Zé Vampir

Quem é que nunca se divertiu com as histórias da Turma do Penadinho, escritas por Maurício de Souza? Pois essa galerinha de arrepiar não poderia deixar de ter o seu Vampiro. Ele se chama Zé Vampir e é cheio de classe… Ao contrário dos outros personagens do cemitério, como o Cranícola, Muminho, Lobisomen e a Dona Morte, que normalmente usam apenas trapos ou lençóis (afinal, são fantasmas!), o nosso menino Vampiro se inspirou nos elegantes sanguessugas do cinema para compor o seu visual: smoking, gravata borboleta e uma elegante capa! Como a maioria dos Vampiros, Zé Vampir também pode se transformar em um simpático morcego, coisa que faz sempre quando quer assustar alguém. Apesar disso, Zé Vampir é um Vampiro camarada, e nunca leva seu apetite por sangue às últimas consequências. Na verdade, o morceguinho sempre acaba preferindo alguma guloseima à base de morango ou groselha, bem vermelhinha…

Don Drácula

Protagonista de um desenho animado japonês, Don Drácula (Don Dorakyura) fez a festa de muitas crianças brasileiras durante a década de 80, quando foi exibido. Criado por Osamu Tezuka (considerado o “Deus do Mangá”) em 1979, o pano de fundo da história é a mudança de Drácula para o Japão, para fugir de seu arquiinimigo, o Dr. Rip Van Helsing… Muito desastrado, o Vampiro acaba se envolvendo em muitas confusões com sua filha, Sangria, e Igor, seu criado corcunda. Sem falar no morceguinho Yasu, que narra com muito bom humor alguns momentos da história. Além de Van Helsing, Don Drácula também se esforça para fugir dos “ataques” da apaixonada Blonda, uma gorducha cheia de sangue para dar! Um típico desenho japonês, que deixou saudades em muita gente.

Vampirella

Criada na década de 60 pelo célebre Forrest J. Ackerman (o escritor que utilizou pela primeira vez a expressão “Sci-Fi”), a curvilínea Vampirella povoa a imaginação dos marmanjos desde aquela época. Sempre vestida com um sensual maiô colante vermelho, que revela boa parte de sua invejável forma física, a Vampirella das histórias em quadrinhos já teve duas origens… Para Ackerman, a Vampira era uma alienígena de Drakulon, onde todos os habitantes são Vampiros que se alimentam do sangue que corre nos rios desse estranho planeta. Na década de 90, entretanto, Vampirella teve sua origem reescrita por Kevin Lau, e passou a ser a filha de Lilith, uma Vampira mitológica. Seja como for, Vampi (como é carinhosamente chamada pelos íntimos) continua combatendo o crime com seu peculiar estilo sexy-sangrento, e muita gente boa não ligaria nem um pouco em ser mordido pela simpática heroína…

Mirza

Criada em 1967 por Eugênio Colonnese, um dos mestres pioneiros da HQ nacional, Mirza é a personagem feminina mais conhecida do terror brasileiro. Inspirada na internacional Vampirella, a vampira brasileira povoou o imaginário de várias gerações de leitores, já que foi publicada em momentos distintos das décadas de 60, 70 e 80. O verdadeiro nome de Mirza era Mirela Zamanova, uma condessa exuberante que se tornou um ícone não só do terror como também do erotismo nos quadrinhos. Suas aventuras se davam nos ambientes glamurosos das passarelas da alta moda e nas festas da elite brasileira, já que Mirza ganhava a vida como modelo internacional, sempre vestida (ou despida, é claro!) em trajes provocantes e muito muito sensuais… Em seu reinado de terror, Mirza visitou as maiores cidades do mundo, procurando suas vítimas indiscriminadamente entre homens e mulheres, e deixando uma verdadeira legião de “órfãos”, candidatos eternos aos voluptuosos caninos da vampira.

Miriam Blaylock

A secular vampira Miriam Blaylock, interpretada por Catherine Deneuve em “Fome de viver” (The Hungers), ficou célebre na película de Tony Scott, um dos mais belos e chocantes filmes de 1983. Personagem do livro mais famoso de Whitley Strieber, Lady Miriam e seu vampiro-amante John (David Bowie) tinham uma vida sofisticada, eram apaixonados por música clássica e sobreviviam à base de sangue novo de homens e mulheres. Mas repentinamente John teve um estranho distúrbio celular e envelheceu em poucos segundos, forçando Miriam a procurar a doutora Sarah Roberts (Susan Sarandon), especialista em envelhecimento precoce. Foi a deixa para que a vampira seduzisse a médica ao som da ópera Lakmé, de Léo Delibes, em uma das cenas mais eróticas do filme. Sob o poder de Miriam, Sarah foi perdendo aos poucos sua identidade humana, mergulhando cada vez mais fundo na escuridão dos Filhos da Noite…

Carmilla

Personagem central de um conto publicado em 1872 pelo escritor irlandês Sheridan Le Fanu, Carmilla foi uma das primeiras criaturas da noite registradas na literatura mundial. De hábitos noturnos, cabelos e olhos castanho escuros, Carmilla logo chamou a atenção de Laura, uma jovem da nobreza austríaca com quem a Vampira manteve um relacionamento conturbado. Na história, narrada pela própria vítima, Carmilla acaba revelando ser a Condessa Karnstein, uma antepassada de Laura, falecida há mais de 150 anos! Linda, graciosa e de porte aristocrático, Carmilla influenciou toda uma geração de Vampiras fatais, e há quem diga, inclusive, que Bram Stoker teria se inspirado na obra de seu conterrâneo para criar o seu Drácula.

Philinnion

Philinnion é a personagem de um conto muito antigo atribuído ao historiador grego Phlegon de Trales, que teria vivido no primeiro ou segundo século da era cristã, e por isso pode ser considerada uma das primeiras vampiras da literatura. A história narra o drama de um jovem chamado Machates, que se apaixonou perdidamente por Philinnion, sem saber que ela já estava morta… Machates morava com os pais da moça, e recebia todas as noites a visita de sua noiva. Quando os pais de Philinnion viram a filha na cama com o hóspede, trataram de avisá-lo que aquilo era uma assombração! O jovem ficou arrasado, e Philinnion amaldiçoou seus pais por terem revelado seu pequeno segredo… Mais tarde, os habitantes da cidade perceberam que a tumba da jovem estava vazia e encontraram seu corpo em casa. O cadáver de Philinnion foi então queimado e oferecido ao Deus Hermes, para que sua alma fosse enviada ao mundo das trevas. A história de Philinnion era muito famosa na época do Império Romano, e serviu de inspiração para Goethe escrever seu famoso poema “Die Braut von Korinth”.

Lord Ruthven

Personagem principal do livro “The Vampyre”, publicado em 1819, o sedutor Lord Ruthven nasceu durante uma emocionante tempestade literária… Reza a lenda que, em 1816, o grande poeta romântico Lord Byron reuniu em Genebra alguns amigos, entre eles Mary Shelley, escritora, e John Polidori, médico. Byron propôs um desafio aos demais: uma competição de histórias de terror, que foi vencida pelo Frankenstein criado na ocasião por Shelley. Foi nesse jogo que Byron idealizou o enredo para “The Vampyre”, mas logo abandonou o projeto. Polidori, que também estava naquela noite, desenvolveu a idéia de Byron e ainda se inspirou na figura do amigo para dar vida a Ruthven, um elegante Vampiro inglês que transitava com desenvoltura nas festas mais chiques da nobreza européia, onde dava vazão a seus instintos bestiais entre um gole de champagne e uma mordida certeira no pescoço de alguma linda donzela… O evento azedou a amizade dos dois, mas deu ao mundo um dos personagens vampíricos mais marcantes da literatura mundial.

Conde Saint-German

O Conde Ragoczy Saint-German é a principal criação da escritora californiana Chelsea Quinn Yarbro, que conta com uma verdadeira legião de fãs vampirescos nos Estados Unidos. Azzo, o Cavaleiro

Encravado em algum lugar dos Cárpatos, na Romênia, está o assombrado castelo Klatka. Este é o lar de Azzo, o Cavaleiro Vampiro que protagoniza a obra “A Mysterious Stranger”, de autor desconhecido, publicada pela primeira vez em 1860. Azzo é um Vampiro centenário, com um profundo desprezo pela humanidade, e só tem interesse pelas coisas pitorescas, incomuns. Ante sua presença, mesmo os lobos mais selvagens se tornam dóceis e inofensivos. Com a eterna aparência de um homem de 40 anos, alto e magro, o Cavaleiro tem olhos cinzas amedrontadores, e usa bigode, barba e cabelos negros e curtos. Sempre vestido em sua armadura medieval, Azzo é rude, sarcástico e monossilábico com os visitantes, guardando toda a sua elegância e cultura secular para cortejar as jovens donzelas que acompanham os viajantes. O Vampiro de Sussex

Em 1924, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle publicou “The Sussex Vampire” (“O Vampiro de Sussex”), colocando Sherlock Holmes frente a frente com um ser das trevas. A história começa em uma manhã de novembro, com uma carta assustadora. Nela, um certo Robert Ferguson pede a ajuda de Holmes para resolver um espantoso caso de vampirismo! Atenție! Dacă nu vi se raspunde cu ”da?”, ”ce?„ sau o altă exclamație/un alt onomatopeu care să confirme atenția celeilalte persoane pula nu se pune, așa că aveți grijă!

Vlad is a name of a prince from the darkness (a vampire, maybe) which lived in the era of middle Century in Balkan Peninsula, the exact places was Transilvania in northern of Romania. The prince was famous of his brutality to his enemies and the society around on that time. The victims of War were not only killed in brutally ways but also valded and tied up in an iron topped on the ground from his mouth till his ass. Hi..hi.. a terrible situations on that times. His brutallities and tirans were end up after all the Balkans area were invaded and conquered by the Turks Empire, and he himself were sentenced to death by his murder-vlad-way.

TRANSYLVANIA, Land of Vampires: This province of Romania was famous trhough all over the world by his tourist theme of horror, Vampires. If you wanna feel another sensation of being a tourist, maybe destination of Transylvania are due to your wild experiences of being horror and horrible feeling. The vampire Legend which almost become a theme horror in world are well managed and well pakckaged by The authority to be an interesting attractions (or places) for tourisms. The castles, the prisons and the surroundings of where the Vampire used to live and make a life are merely visited by the tourisms.

Vampires are folkloric and mythological beings who subsist by feeding on the life essence (generally in the form of blood) of living creatures. In folkloric tales, vampires often visited loved ones and caused harm or deaths in the places they selected for their residence. In the past, vampires were described like dark figures walkers of the night. In actual times there is a totally different image due to novels and even movies. The mysterious beings are now, sometimes, the heroes of the stories.

The success of these books, films, video games and even TV shows, are making people forget how this legend started, how the vampires and their usually foes, the werewolves became part of the world culture.

Stories of the Vampire go back in the early history of civilization, back to ancient civilizations such as the Babylonians, the Aztecs and the Chinese.

Classic Rome also participated with some of their demy-gods.

Beautiful Night Killer

The modern legend of Vampires started in Romania around the early 16th century. Many people traveling through Eastern Europe reported sightings and encounters with Vampires. These stories spread rapidly throughout the entire old Europe. A continent already plagued with lots of superstitious believes at the time.
The legend of the vampire begun, but it was not until authors like Lord Byron and Goethe that the vampires became the romantic creatures we now know in modern times.

Porphyries, a genetic and incurable disease, share some of the traditional attributes of the Vampires: the need for constant blood transfusions (because lack of hematines); light sensitivity causing rashes and scarring of the skin (photo dermatitis) and problems with the nervous system and muscles (seizures, mental disturbances).

Being out in the sun can cause pain, sensations of heat, blistering, and skin redness and swelling. Blisters heal slowly, often with scarring or skin color changes. They may be disfiguring. Urine may turn red or brown after an attack.

Different cultures have different myths about the vampires. For instancing European beliefs the vampire is dead, twisted and decrepit zombie creature. In America is a different story, made up directly from Hollywood. The creature is sensual, sophisticated and desirable.

A little history:
When you think about vampires usually the first name that you think of is Dracula. Thanks to the famous novel by the same title, by Bram Stoker this image is in every men, women and child in western world mind.

Dracula was actually based on a true Romanian Prince named Vlad Tepes or Vlad the Impaler as people also know him.
He was seen as a hero by his contemporary countrymen. According to most legend he was considered a fair, but very cruel man. Most of the information we have about this prince is transmitted by verbal tradition from Romanians stories tellers, and also by Germans and Russians pamphlets. The first describe him as a national hero, the second as an evil man… Does that sound familiar to you?

The Most famous Vampire

Vlad was born in 1431 in Transylvania into a noble family. His father was called Dracul, meaning dragon or devil in Romanian because he belonged to the Order of the Dragon, which fought the Muslim Ottoman Empire. Dracula means son of Dracul in Romanian. The name Tepes is also report to mean “the impaler”

Vlad the Impaler

He was born as the son of the prince of Wallachia. He, as his father, spent most of his life fighting the Ottoman Empire preventing the invasion of his country.

The Turks later were afraid of Dracula because the severity of his acts. Vlad the III was known as the impaler because that is how he killed many of his opponents.

There is never any mention of Vlad the III being a Vampire, just a sadistic ruler. Vlad was a hero to his people, even though his methods of his punishment were so severe. But he helped defeat the Turks and kept them out of Romania for many years.

AND WAREWOLVES

Hypertrichosis is a rare disease often called Werewolf syndrome– excessive hair of the face and body, sparing the palms and soles – that occurs at birth, and is thought to be caused by rare genetic mutations involving two conditions, the first is a mutation on chromosome 22. The second hasn’t been identified yet.

The legend was born long time before these few cases of Hypertrichosis (about 30 in the whole world), were associated with the myth and legend of the werewolves.

The Werewolf

A werewolf in folklore and mythology is a person who shape shifts into a wolf, either purposely, or after being placed under a curse. In medieval times the some had the belief that the trigger was the exposure to the full moon, concept that later on was used by fiction writers as part of the process of the transformation.
Another common belief is that a werewolf can be killed by a silver bullet.

Many cultures in history have had legends around these creatures and Shape-shifters similar to werewolves are common in myths from all over the world, though in many cases there are several other animals involved, besides wolves.

In Greek mythology the story of Lycaon is one the earliest examples of a werewolf myth. According to one of the versions of this legend Lycaon was transformed into a wolf by eating human flesh and his victims will inherit a similar curse.

Many of the werewolves in European tradition were most innocent and God-fearing persons, who suffered through the witchcraft of others, or simply from an unhappy fate

A big number of werewolf short stories and novels published in the 20^th century and continues in today’s days with films were werewolves play a big role in stories, often times in fight for supremacy with vampires.

Films like a Werewolf of London in 1935 created the standard that the werewolf always kills what he loves most. But it was in 1941 when Lon Chaney Jr., on his legendary interpretation of a werewolf in The Wolf Man, set the image that everyone has about these creatures of the night.

Vampires and Werewolves are a source of fantasy and imagination and also of box offices records for those that dare to speak, write and film about these creatures.

Are they just a legend and a myth? Some believe in them, some are skeptical and others don’t know. I just wanted to wish you sweet dreams… and close the windows, just in case…

The rumors that have been floating around about the Angels trading for Curtis Granderson don’t make a whole lot of sense to me.  There have been talks that Granderson would be the leadoff hitter if the Angels fail to re-sign Figgins.  The trade would have to include Rivera who is probably the better hitter overall.  Granderson may hit for more power, but it comes at the expense of batting average and on-base percentage.

Tony Reagins denies Holliday report.

I’m glad to hear this.  In my opinion, Holliday is overrated.  Yes he’s a good hitter.  Yes he had a good year in 2009 after an abysmal start in Oakland.  But he should not command $100 million deal.  I’m sure Reagins and the Angels have Holliday in their sites to see what happens, but I don’t forsee them pursuing him.  The Angels have always had a crowded outfield, so signing another outfielder makes no sense.  The Angels would have to trade Rivera for some pitching help (assuming they re-sign Vlad) or move Rivera to DH.
