“Vladimir Bukovsky spent many years in Russian labour camps and psychiatric prisons for defending human rights. He came to Britain in 1976. He lectures and writes on the old Soviet system and the EU. Bukovsky was one of the first to expose the use of psychiatric imprisonment against political prisoners in the Soviet Union. He spent a total of twelve years in Soviet prisons, labor camps and in psikhushkas, forced-treatment psychiatric hospitals used by the government as special prisons.”

Noel Edmonds, who lives in the south of France but stays in the UK while recording his Channel 4 show, appears not to be paying his TV licence. OK, I accept that his domicile may be unclear. However, both London UKIP MEP, Gerard Batten and Russian dissident Vladimir Bukovsky then both enter the frame.

Bukovsky has not paid his fee since 2001, claiming the BBC has a pro-European bias. His group, Vladimir Bukovsky’s TV Licence Refuseniks, has 1,500 members.

Commenting on the Noel Edmonds story, Gerard Batten, who is involved in Mr Bukovsky’s campaign and who has withheld his licence fee since August, allegedly said: “If what Noel Edmonds says is true, it appears the BBC and the TVLA are trying to close down the debate.
‘This is backed up by Vladimir Bukovsky not being prosecuted. They wouldn’t want someone of his intellectual ability in the witness box. Neither would they want to be seen to be prosecuting a high-profile presenter like Noel Edmonds.’ “

Can someone please make sense of this?

Confusion aside, as far as I’m concerned, Gerard Batten is not paying his TV licence. End of story.

The European Parliament Elections are nearly upon us, and it’s time for those of us who are unfortunate enough to be part of the European beast to make up our minds as to which party we should vote for. Well I already know where my vote is going – UKIP. I never thought I’d see the day when my little cross would be best placed next to what is perceived by some (including, until recently, me) as a fringe party, but they’ve won me over.

I’ve seen them described as the ‘BNP in blazers’ but I fail to see any similarity with the racist British National Party. Could it be that the europhiles amongst us are so fearful of the UK Independence Party that they want to pigeon hole them with the BNP in the hope of deterring voters? I suspect the answer is a resounding yes. I also suspect that there are more than a few europhobes out there who are so determined to cling onto the apron strings of one of the main parties that they are likewise willing to brand UKIP as the ‘BNP in blazers’ even though they probably agree with UKIP’s policies.

There may well be a positive side to the EU, which I have always, despite my genetic euroscepticism, conceded could be beneficial to the UK. But the European state has grown too powerful and dictatorial. Aside from the ludicrous bureaucracy associated with it, the wastefulness, the political correctness, and the rest of the eurotrash nonsense, it’s signalled the end of free speech. That latter point being my main gripe.

Highly respected Soviet political dissident, Vladimir Bukovsky has long warned of the threat posed by the EU. He described the Union’s adherence to political correctness as the ‘intellectual gulag . . . the beginning of your loss of freedom.’ Having spent over a decade of his life in the actual forced labour camps of the USSR, he’s well placed to make such observations:

 Hugo Achá Melgar ha sido identificado como el  principal inversor de la célula terrorista desarticulada el pasado 16 de abril en Santa Cruz, (Bolivia) organización que, entre otros delitos, preparaba el magnicidio contra el presidente Evo Morales. Ha sido asesor y estuvo estrechamente vinculado al Comité Cívico de Santa Cruz. Melgar es esposo de la diputada de Unidad Nacional (UN), Roxana Gentile quien fué aspirante a Defensora del Pueblo por el MNR el 2003;  se ha dado a conocer por formular críticas al informe de la Unión de Naciones Suramericanas (UNASUR) sobre la masacre de El Porvenir y asumir la defensa de Leopoldo Fernández, autor de la tristemente célebre “Masacre de Pando“ calificándolo como “preso político”. Defendió a integrantes de la Unión Juvenil Cruceñista que golpearon a jefes policiales y elaboró un informe  que negaba la existencia de servidumbres de indígenas guaraníes. Se opuso a la aprobación de la ley Electoral Transitoria y es considerado un acérrimo opositor al Gobierno de Morales.

Pero lo interesante de este personaje es que es presidente de una organización denominada Humans Rights Foundations (HRF). Específicamente en Bolivia, estas son algunas de sus “luchas”:

•  Exposiciones y elaboración de documentos sobre “Violaciones a los Derechos Humanos en la ciudad de Sucre en noviembre de 2007”. En uno de sus informes de esta fundación se señala que “Con el pretexto de desarticular una presunta “red terrorista” el gobierno de Evo Morales ha desatado una intensa persecución contra los críticos y disidentes de su régimen”.
• “La caza de brujas también afecta a los defensores de los derechos humanos, como en el caso de la Dra. Centa Reck, integrante del directorio de Human Rights Foundation-Bolivia y directora del diario La Estrella del Oriente, a quien el gobierno acusa infundadamente de estar vinculada a esa supuesta red”, añade el documento de la HRF.
•  “El móvil real de la persecución parece ser la participación de la Dra. Reck en una investigación independiente sobre los hechos de violencia sucedidos en el departamento de Pando en septiembre del 2008, cuyos resultados preliminares contradicen seriamente la versión gubernamental”.
• Puntualiza que en el caso específico del prefecto de Pando, Sr. Leopoldo Fernández, Human Rights Foundation-Bolivia acompaña las acciones planteadas por su defensa ante la Corte Interamericana de Derechos Humanos y realizará un seguimiento detallado del proceso en ese organismo internacional.
• Demandan la inmediata liberación del comentarista Jorge Melgar Quete “El Macarena”, quien emitía insultos de grueso calibre contra los collas y el presidente Evo Morales y se lo procesa por instigar a la violencia y al terrorismo.
• Declaró a Amauris Samartino ”prisionero de conciencia” del gobierno boliviano. En noviembre del 2006 este filósofo  intentó agredir al vicepresidente García Linera junto a una horda de la fascista Unión Juvenil Cruceñista exigiendo la “independencia” de Santa Cruz,

Conocemos ampliamente la injerencia política en Venezuela. Desde articulistas, periodistas, humoristas, artistas, escritores, políticos, militares, exministros y otros sectores de la “sociedad civil” han sido “utilizados” (por no decir asalariados) por esta organización para atentar contra Chávez desde todas las formas posibles. Al respecto, investiguemos un poco más acerca de esta Fundación. En palabras de la abogado Eva Golinger: “Su directiva y staff lo dice todo:”

 Thor Halvorssen Mendoza: Hijo de Thor Halvorssen Hellum, el venezolano-noruego expresidente de la CANTV durante la administración de Carlos Andrés Pérez en los años setenta y perteneciente a una de las Familias más ricas de Venezuela (Mendoza). Ahora mismo, se dedica a producir “films” y documentales con el fin de desacreditar a figuras de la izquierda estadounidense como Michel Moore y a líderes políticos del partido Demócrata como la familia Clinton.  Luego, fue el zar anti-droga venezolano y se desempeñó como un agente de la DEA de EEUU y la CIA. De hecho, Halvorssen ha admitido publicamente que ha “trabajado” con la CIA, aunque niega de ser su “agente”. Lo que no entiende Halvorssen, es que un “agente” de la CIA es precisamente alguien que “trabaja” con la CIA. De hecho, Halvorssen trabajó con la CIA en El Salvador y Nicaragua durante la guerra sucia de los años ochenta y fue un cercano colaborador del líder de los Contra, Adolfo Calero. En el año 1993, Halvorssen fue arrestado y encarcelado por 74 días bajo una acusación de haber participado en un acto de terrorismo (una serie de ataques con bombas en Caracas para causar cambios en la bolsa y el ámbiente económico). Ha participado como comentarista de Fox News, incluyendo una vez junto al Reverendo Pat Robinson cuando declaró que era necesario asesinar al Presidente Chávez. Es Presidente del HRF.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                        Aleksander Boyd: Es Vicepresidente de la Human Rights Foundation. Un militante anti-chavista de origen venezolano radicado en Inglaterra. Mantiene una página web en donde despotrica cada día del Rrrrégimen venezolano. Fue invitado a participar como Observador Electoral en Bolivia. Este “promotor” de los Derechos Humanos en 2004 escribió un artículo en el cual dijo soñar con ser Genghis Khan y poder ordenar a sus hordas capturar a líderes chavistas y vertir plata liquida en sus ojos, decapitar a Lina Ron y a Diosdado Cabello en una plaza pública, torturar por el resto de su vida al entonces vicepresicente José Vicente Rangel y volar por los barrios de Caracas y lanzar los cuerpos sin vida de “esos criminales que han destruido mi país.” Boyd ha igualmente hecho llamados a utilizar la violencia para remover al Presidente Hugo Chávez y fue acusado por el ex-alcalde de Londres de ser un promotor del terrorismo.  Replicó, ofendido por la acusación y fué tildado de disociado..

Armando Valladares: Arrestado a finales de 1960 en La Habana, mientras situaba explosivos en lugares públicos por cuenta de la CIA. Secretario General de HRF y uno de los anti-castro cubanos más activos a nivel público en el mundo. Fue nombrado Embajador de los EEUU ante la Comisión de los Derechos Humanos de la ONU por el Presidente Ronald Reagan en donde ejecutó las políticas contra la isla caribeña y a favor de la agenda imperial. Conocido por utilizar una supuesta condición de inválido frente a la opinión pública, en favor  de lograr la simpatía internacional. Se presentaba a sí mismo como un inválido por la tortura del Régimen de Castro. Fue agente de la CIA e informate de la policia batistiana. Se dice de él que es escritor y autor de un libro  titulado irónicamente “Desde mi silla de ruedas”, fue escrito por su socio y cómplice, Carlos Alberto Montaner. Por su tiempo encarcelado en Cuba por ser agente de un cuerpo de inteligencia extranjero y enemigo, Washington lo ha colocado como un “disidente ejemplar” ante la comunidad internacional, aunque su real trabajo ha sido promover una campaña de desinformación contra Cuba para prolongar el bloqueo inhumano contra la isla. Otros miembros de HRF incluyen a Kenneth Anderson, antiguo abogado de las fundaciones de George Soros (¿será por eso que lo quieren difamar junto con Evo Morales y Juan Ramón Quintana, con quienes no tiene conexión ninguna?); Vladimir Bukovsky, un “disidente soviético”; Palden Gyatso, activista de Tibet (anti-Chino); Garry Kasparov, jugador de ajedrez y crítico abierto al ex Presidente Ruso Vladimir Putin y el gobierno ruso; Mart Laar, ex primer ministro de Estonia, activista anti-ruso y ganador del Premio Militon Friedman (igual que Yon Goicochea); Alvaro Vargas Llosa, periodista y escritor, antiguo miembro de la junta editorial del Miami Herlad y articulista del periódico conservador Wall Street Journal; Ramón José Velásquez, expresidente de Venezuela (1993-1994); el neoconservador James Q. Wilson; y Monica Fernández, abogada venezolana que autorizó la detención del Ministro Ramón Rodriguez Chacín por parte de los alcades opositores Leopoldo López y Henrique Capriles Radonski durante el golpe de estado contra el Presidente Chávez en abril 2002.

Totdat ik surfte en terecht kwam bij het “verdrag” dat het ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken op 18-10-2007 schijnt te hebben ondertekend.

Een combinatie van zo’n 800 man sterke politiemacht met militaire bevoegdheden ( te zijner tijd uitbreidbaar naar zo’n 2.300 man sterk ) die in een tijdspanne van 30 dagen volkomen paraat in een samenwerkingsverband tussen de landen Frankrijk, Italië, Portugal, Nederland en Spanje aan elkaar “uitgewisseld” kunnen worden.

Het hoofdkwartier schijnt in Vicence ( Italië ) te zitten.

Als reden om deze militaire politiemacht op te richten, werd gesteld:

“Tijdens recente internationale crisisbeheersings- en vredesoperaties is gebleken dat er in instabiele situaties, naast de noodzaak voor militaire vredeshandhavingseenheden, een bijzondere behoefte bestaat aan robuuste politie-eenheden die zelfstandig inzetbaar zijn. Tegen deze achtergond hebben de deelnemende landen, die allen beschikken over een dergelijk politiekorps met militaire status, besloten de EGF op te richten.”

Crisisbeheersing – Instabiele situaties – Zelfstandig inzetbaar – Een beetje ondoorzichtig allemaal!

Maar vooral erg achterbaks en gluiperig tot stand gekomen!

Europa lijkt hiermee weer een eind op weg een militaire macht ( lees fascistische staat ) te worden.

Gezien de onduidelijke taakomschrijving van dit machtsapparaat met termen als “crisisbeheersing”, en “instabiele situaties”, mijn vraag of het reëel is te veronderstellen dat deze in actie kan komen wanneer er sprake is van een bevolkingsopstand, of zou een massieve volksdemonstratie al genoeg zijn?

Is Moscow now forgiven for the invasion of Georgia and the annexation of its territory? For the aggression against Britain by assassinating a British citizen, Alexander Litvinenko, on British soil, in a nuclear terrorist attack? One has to hold the public in utter contempt to try and sell the same rubbish to the same generation three times. Even more so – to present it every time as something novel and unprecedented. Indeed, none of these people can explain how their ‘reset’ is any different from the appeasement of 1930s, the détente of 1970s, and the joint US-Russian ‘war on terror’ of the 2000s.

Unless this policy is abandoned soon enough, its future results are quite predictable. We remember how the appeasement led to a world war, the detente – to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, and the gaze into Putin’s eyes – to the attack on Britain and the invasion of Georgia. It is a pity noone has told this to the State Department (or whoever has re-invented it this time). In places like Moscow and Tehran, friendly gestures will be taken as an invitation to choose the next victim.

A few days ago, I met with a colleague and we took the train up to Cambridge, to visit Vladimir Bukovsky. One can read a great deal about the atrocities perpetrated in communist Russia, but nothing quite prepares one to an encounter with a real life hero that has defeated physical and psychological torture, incarceration, prosecution and years of harassment from, perhaps the world’s most effective repressive apparatus (KGB), armed with nothing more than strength of character and dignity. I wanted to pick his brain and try and get some answers, so after the initial formalities we moved to more meaningful conversation.

One of the first things I remember him saying was “it’s been 30 years since we defeated Ortega and he’s back in power. These guys are indestructible!” We were discussing, of course, Venezuela, Hugo Chavez and its petrodiplomacy. Naturally the topics of Ortega, Morales, Correa, FARC and other unsavory useful idiots popped early. Bukovsky has a keen interest in learning about the advance of socialism/communism anywhere around the world, so we explained to him that the postmodern dictator, embodied by Chavez, does not need to kill or disappear his opponents, as they did in Bukovsky’s time, for killing their political and public personae is a much more effective way of getting rid of foes. In this respect I picked up on a comment he had made about one of the methods used by the KGB: that of placing its enemies in INTERPOL’s wanted list in order to curtail their activities. For days I had been thinking about Venezuela’s novel approach of requesting INTERPOL to include student leader Nixon Moreno in its wanted list –genocide al-Bashir though gets invited to Caracas by Chavez. Mind you this was a first from Chavez’s regime, as far as I could tell, and it certainly seemed odd. Bukovsky said “the KGB have been doing this for about 15 years. So if you’re lucky enough to get out of the country, your international movements are heavily compromised for you could be arrested anywhere. Probably some Russians are sharing knowledge with Chavez…” In an ideal world, such request from undemocratic and authoritarian regimes should be ignored, especially taking into consideration that not only charges brought against political foes are complete fabrications but the principle of innocence until proved guilty in a court of law is completely trumped. As Bukovsky would explain, fabricating charges is something communist regimes excel at, and Chavez’s is not different. He asked about how many political prisoners were there in Venezuela: not a week after Chavez’s justice system just confirmed what we said, sentencing a group of innocent men to 30 years imprisonment on trumped charges that could never be demonstrated in court.

Walking around King’s College he explained how, after having spent about 12 years in different prisons and psychiatric wards in Russia, he, almost suddenly, found himself in King’s peaceful and perfectly mowed lawns in what was the beginning of his academic career. In later years, Bukovsky was invited back to Russia by Yeltsin’s government to put his expertise to the service of a Constitutional Court. He told me that, before accepting, he made one request: to be allowed access to classified documents of COMINTERN and other bodies of the Communist party. KGB archives were kept out of reach. Nonetheless he took a laptop and a hand-scanner straight from its inventor, which was a new technology at the time and profitting from the ignorance of Russian politburo apparatchiks, that didn’t really understand what was going on, managed to copy thousands of documents, which he used afterwards to write a book entitled Jugement a Moscou. But, as he would relay, the interesting part were not only his findings, but his inability to have the book published in English, owing to legal claims that those Westerners who appear in the documents would bring against him. He says that influential English and American politicians were merrily passing information to KGB and the Politburo and getting kickbacks in return. I asked whether he came across any notorious names in Latin America and Venezuela and he replied by saying that the communist influence, in the form of intelligence sharing, training, weapons provision, advice, etc. was old and widespread. Unfortunately I don’t read Russian, but it would surely be fascinating to go through the files to see what’s in them.

We shared a few thoughts about life in socialist Europe, Gramsci, and the victory of the Frankfurt School in imposing as norm in our societies its wretched invention: political correctness. We laughed at the naiveté of Western politicians, when it comes to dealing with thugs such as Putin, or Chavez, or Castro, or Mugabe, or Ahmadinejad. Traveling around Latin America, except for Cuba, one gets the impression that us Venezuelans are a few pages ahead in the postmodern dictatorship script. Meeting with Bukovsky however brings us back to an era that most thought ended in 1989: XX century communism. The tactics may be more refined but neo-communists and their ‘XXI century socialism’ are as effective at crushing the human spirit as their previous counterparts. Bukovsky lamented the fact that, after the Reagan administration, the US government stopped relying on information provided by sources like himself. He said that, for instance, there were many thousands of Russian and Iranian expats living in the USA, yet this huge pool of knowledge is not tapped into by the Department of State or the intelligence agencies, which leads to many blunders and foreign policy failures. In the meantime, words from fundamentalists elected to office, despite their ideological and religious predispostion against Western norms, principles and laws are taken at face value. That shortcoming, or lack of engagement with those in the know, is repeated in other countries. Bukovsky mentioned that for the USA to expect Russia to give a helping hand in nuclear dealings with Iran is beyond naive. Rather, it is stupid.

Curious about his courage and motivation to stand against oppression, Bukovsky gave me a remarkable answer, one that takes the issue to epistemological levels and, in a certain way, coincides with the motto of this blog: “when you’re not allowed to think for yourself, when you’re not allowed to have, and voice, an opinion, insofar as such opinion is contrary to the diktats of the ruling party, you lose the only thing that makes us human. You become like an object in a meaningless life, and such life is not worth living. So I decided to rebel against that system and I had no fear of dying, for living in such condition was akin to being dead.”

Unfortunately, this world of ours is lacking in towering figures, like this Marlon Brando of dignity. For Bukovsky, opposing communism, and its associated ideologies, is not a choice but a moral imperative that reasserts the human spirit.

President Reagan’s assistant secretary of defense, Richard Perle, said, “Jamie Glazov rolls over left-wing intellectual pretensions with a Mack truck that handles like a Porsche. He rounds them up – and when he’s finished, there’s nothing left.”

Although history allows no doubt Leftist beliefs have spawned mass carnage and misery, and the deaths of millions of people, until now it has been extremely difficult for rational people who value personal freedom to understand the motivation of those who live in comfort, yet embrace monstrous dictators, ideologies and policies that leave only death in their wake.

Rising to the call, Glazov uses the astonishing words of well-known Leftists to explain their love for and deification of totalitarian ideologies with clarity and candor.

“Any leftist who reads this, and has any honesty left in his mind, must recognize himself in this picture and, hopefully, be ashamed,” adds Vladimir Bukovsky, once a leading Soviet dissident and author of “Judgment in Moscow.”

Within hours of its release, “United in Hate” was No. 1 among books relating to communism on Amazon.com.

Glazov concludes: “This is where the Western Left and militant Islam (like the Western Left and Communism) intersect: human life must be sacrificed for the sake of the idea. Like Islamists, leftists have a Manichean vision that rigidly distinguishes good from evil. They see themselves as personifications of the former and their opponents as personifications of the latter, who must be slated for ruthless elimination.”

Sounds crazy, but how else can one explain the views of famed moviemaker Francis Ford Coppola, who said of one of the world’s most notorious dictators: “Fidel, I love you. We both have the same initials. We both have beards. We both have power and want to use it for good purposes.” Or Harry Belafonte, who said: “If you believe in freedom, if you believe in justice, if you believe in democracy, you have no choice but to support Fidel Castro.”

Last month Eva and I were at the home of friends in the town of Åkersberga, northeast of Stockholm City, for dinner and conversation. They recently had been to Berlin where they had married ten years ago. This led to a discussion of cities in Europe we each had visited.

Eva and I visited Budapest, Hungary in April, 2004. I told our friends of our soulful visit to the Millenáris Park Exhibition Hall, which was then housing a traveling exhibit of Samizdat printing equipment and paraphernalia, art and sculpture.

The Russian word Samizdat means “publishing by yourself”: “You write by yourself, edit by yourself, you censor by yourself, you distribute by yourself and you do time for it by yourself as well.” (Vladimir Bukovsky)

Everything the authorities in the Soviet dictatorships prohibited or that censorship did not permit found its ways into intellectual underground: out of posters and leaflets and typed or printed books, out of stamps and photographs and provocative works of arts there arose a cosmos apart, unique and colourful.

Samizdat existed in all countries of the Soviet sphere of power. It gained its widest circulation in the former USSR, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Hungary and the GDR. With its 400 exhibits, the Samizdat exhibition attempts to rescue this fascinating and colourful world from oblivion. [Source]

Upon leaving the exhibit to re-enter the lobby where the book and gift store is located, I noticed a large wall exhibit showing the chronologies of Samizdat in the five countries mentioned in the quoted passage, above: the former USSR, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Hungary and the German Democratic Repuiblic (East Germany). It was chilling and thrilling to see about the brave writers, artists and publishers who refused to be intimidated by the Soviet authorities, some of whom were not only jailed and sent to mental hospitals, but were even killed.

I rushed to the book store to ask for a copy of this chronology in English, but only Hungarian and Gernman was available. So I went back to the wall and took a dozen or so photographs of the entire display. later, at home, I transcribed the text into an Excel document, from which I have excerpted, below.
