Project Outline
“The result is an airy, glass-based structure that accommodates residents with both low and high dependencies, as well as staff areas, expansive courtyards, a therapy wing, ‘de-escalation’ space, and an outdoor sports court and perimeter walking track. The consultation process was documented as a model of care, and that has been described as both a therapeutic and recovery model of care,” describes PTW Architects’ Principal Director Diane Jones

Expanses of glass
Following the decision to embrace a lengthy, open-plan spine, connected to offshoot wings and courtyards (akin to spokes splaying from a wheel hub), PTW had freedom to use carefully selected building materials, most notably glass.

“Some of the guiding principles were space, choice and outlook. Each wing has windows looking onto a courtyard, then from each courtyard you can look out beyond to the west. From the Therapy Courtyard [to the north] you can look through to the west through the double-glazed corridor, which opens out to a deck and garden area,” said PTW Architect Richard Hudson. 

The extensive use of ‘openable’ windows for natural ventilation, in-floor heating and cooling, all incorporated into a building management system diminishes air conditioning loads. All external windows are double glazed using the Viridian VTough SuperGreen product, not only to save energy, but also to minimise unwanted road and surrounding noise.

The entry and reception areas which are low dependency areas and therapy zones feature 9mm VLam toughened glass, while high dependency, seclusion and admissions areas are equipped with a 13mm VLam toughened glass option. Viridian 14mm JailGuard (what’s now known as AssaultGuard Ultra 14) was used in external non-courtyard areas. 

The qualities of the design and its component materials, representative of clarity, openness and transparency, have been applied sensitively and strategically to the medical functions of the structure. The increasing density of Australian cities has fuelled demand for acoustic glazing products, and glazing has a dramatic effect on any building’s internal acoustics.

Historically, there has been a marked difference in attitudes toward acoustics in Europe and Australia. Europe is ahead of Australia in terms of acoustic requirements; their buildings have better sound insulation, while ours – being in a milder climate – are quite lightweight. Fortunately, Australia is rapidly catching up. Improved acoustic amenity is getting more attention, as more people become aware of the issues and demand better-quality glazing. Australian cities are still low-density by world standards, but this is quickly changing. As our cities become denser, councils want higher density around transport hubs – they are currently rezoning certain blocks for higher-density populations.

While increased density brings clear benefits, it also heightens the “neighbour problem”. Noise transference between neighbours is going to become more severe as density intensifies. When single houses are being replaced by high-density developments, neighbour noise suddenly becomes a very big issue – and potentially a major source of annoyance. Viridian’s ComfortHush provides a great start in improving the acoustic properties of Australian homes. ComfortHush is essentially two layers of glass sandwiching a unique 3-layer laminate – which provides additional internal dampening, and significantly boosts acoustic performance.

ComfortHush cuts out unwanted noise via the dampening properties of its special laminated interlayer. The acoustic energy gets transferred into heat when it comes into contact with the laminate with the interlayer essentially absorbing the energy. The majority of Australian’s homes use ordinary clear 4mm or thinner glass. It’s a particularly poor performer when it comes to both acoustics and energy efficiency. A contributing factor to the rise of noise pollution is the increase in high-to-medium-density housing. In many cases we’re leaving the traditional quarter-acre block in the suburbs and moving into apartments, town houses and converted warehouses in the central and inner city areas.  Simply put, Australians are now living and working physically closer to each other than ever before. And we are noisier now than we were a generation ago – with most homes now containing at least one television, a radio, a stereo system and a range of noisy household appliances.

Addressing a Noise Problem

Addressing the path the noise takes to enter your home should be addressed prior to building. It is about choosing the right sound barrier materials and installation techniques to cut off the path of the noise from entering through the exterior of your home through the walls, windows, floors, ceiling and roof of the home.

Ordinary glass provides a particularly easy path for noise transmission through the glass that can be addressed by choosing an acoustic performance glass that dampens noise – and it’s critical to ensure that all flanking paths in the exterior of the building have been sealed. Flanking will occur when the sound waves travel around an object, through crevices or cracks, much like water finding holes in a bucket. Whilst glass is impervious and so cannot be flanked, if poorly glazed or placed in a window that is not well sealed it will severely diminish its performance.  In general for windows, those that are susceptible to water penetration and air leakage are also susceptible to flanking.

Addressing a Noise Problem

There are three things that occur when sound encounters a window

1. The sound wave may be reflected away, causing little concern to those inside the building
2. The sound wave may be absorbed through dampening, dissipating as heat and will be of little concern at audible frequencies
3. What sound isn’t reflected or absorbed is transmitted through the window.

Transmission can occur through two main actions, ‘flanking’ or vibration. Flanking occurs where sound waves pass through gaps or cracks in the window. The other method of transmission is where sound waves travelling through the air cause the glass to vibrate. This allows sound to travel from the exterior of glass to the interior of the home. The rapid vibration typically won’t be seen, but may be felt if you place your hand on the glass.

How do you reduce noise through a window?

An acoustic window reduces sound which would otherwise be transmitted through an ordinary window. This relies on ensuring ComfortHush is used in combination with a window that is carefully selected and well sealed to reduce air leakage.

1. Reduce Vibration – ComfortHush includes a special 3-layer laminate that has been specifically engineered to reduce noise. Ordinary glass can vibrate at the same frequency as the noise source, helping the noise to penetrate beyond the window. A phenomenon known as the coincidence dip makes ordinary glass transparent to sound at certain frequencies. The construction of the ComfortHush increases its resistance to vibration in the critical frequency range where speech is understood and many unwanted environmental noises are noticed, helping to make ComfortHush a more effective dampener than ordinary glass.
2. Eliminate Air Leakage – cracks and crevices and even the most minute of gaps will greatly reduce the performance of windows by providing opportunities for flanking. Think of it like air escaping from a balloon, the smallest of holes will allow the air carrying noise to escape. Where air can travel around the window assembly there is opportunity for sound to travel to the interior of the home.

The method proposed in this paper is based on the combination of two things: first, the ability of the mind to memorize almost limitless amount of visual objects (once seen), and second, the strengthening effect of associating a phrase (a familiar little story) with the password which is about to form.

Goals to seek in VLAM

• transferrability of password. You could make your way through the world with that what is inside you, what you really know. Thus the password itself should not be prone to change. Of course it must be given a thought whether it is possible for the attacker to gain knowledge of those precise aspects that you are presenting in authenticating yourself.
• avoiding the upcoming attack techniques against passwords: timing attacks. These measure the time between your keypresses and thus gain a bit / some bits of information about the password. In VLAM, analogous attack might be possible by deep knowledge of the brain and how much time it takes to scan a matrix and find the picture, depending probably partially on where in the matrix the correct picture is and what are the characteristics of the false pictures (‘bright’, gaining the user’s attention, etc.)

Well, it was now time for me to set off toward the boulder, I walked over to the car picked up my binoculars, the shotgun and a few shells then turned back toward the gate and headed into the field. The farmer had also seen several other woodchucks to the left of the large boulder in another group of rocks.

I passed the gate and then headed down the ridge between some hay bales and then moved around the northern edge of the swamp separating the woods from the barns. This time I made sure there were no bulls around. Normally on very warm days the cattle crossed the creek and stayed along the wood line on the southern edge of the hay fields.

By the time I reached the swampy waters, the ground became very uneven and I had to be careful when placing my boots down not to twist an ankle. I slowed my pace right down and began still-hunting up the western ridge toward the large group of rocks on my right. My plan was to keep as low as I could so that the woodchuck would not see me coming up over the crest and this would lead me to the right hand side of the largest boulder.

I was able to make my way to the forest edge and tuck myself under the famous tall pine and kneel down behind some rocks. I now had two choices, take a twenty meter shot from under the tree at the woodchuck once it stuck its head out or attempt to close the gap for a closer shot and maybe even come in from behind.

I chose the second choice as it was the more challenging of the two, still-hunting and being able to sneak up on your game without it spotting you is quite rewarding indeed. So, I loaded my 870 with a single shell and stood up very slowly and starting stalking toward the boulder on leveled ground.

I waited for the woodchuck to come out and stop, he was about half way out of the den, he was not moving out any further. The woodchuck could sense that there was something around because when I was more than two hundred meters away, he had come right out and was sun bathing on the top of the large rock.

The forest edge was on my left and the grass around the woodchucks den was knee-high, I was being very careful to walk on the edge of my boots and slowly pushing down on the grass and looking to see if there were small branches that I could avoid. I slowed my breathing right down and I could feel the adrenaline rushing through my body.

I made it within six meters and the woodchuck finally spotted me and sunk back into his hole but he did not go very deep, because he started to thump and whistle and this went on for about ten minutes or so. Therefore I decided to take a closer look and came around the front of the den and see down into the hole.

He was down there alright because the thumping sound was very clear, and he was not going to come out until I was far enough away. So, I turned around and headed back to the large pine and planned on sitting and waiting it out. By the time I got back to the large pine and got down with a clear western view of the boulder the thumping and whistling had ceased but there were still some bugs hanging around the den entrance.

Sometimes what I like to do is find a large rock and sit on it, so that I am elevated off the ground this way I am sure not to cause any vibrations or sounds on the forest floor or ground thus alerting the woodchucks. I must have waited a good twenty minutes or so and I kept a watchful eye around me the whole time but mainly on the large boulder and the den entrance.

To my south there was a small slope leading to the swamp and between us there was another large group of rocks. I wanted to make sure the cattle were still on the southern fields across the creek, so that they would not come between me and the barns on my way back and this is when I noticed “tick bag”. He was standing right up on his two hind legs and was keeping watch on me. It was indeed tick bag lookin’ the shape of his head and the reflection of the sun on his fur made him look like a rock.

I immediately turned around took my 870 off safe and began my slow stalk down the small slope to that rock formation. Tick bag, did not move and then he skipped on his two hind legs and started to thump, let out another whistle and darted under the biggest rock which looked like a large vertical dagger just above this hole.

I came around its left and in behind the third and fourth rock which was part of this rock fortress. I managed to sneak up from behind just like the farmer had done in the past and was able to line up my bead sight with the nape of the woodchuck who was inching out to check if I was still to its north or my right. This hole was deep and in the vertical and I did not have another chance for a second shot, if I missed or just wounded the chuck, tick bag would disappear underground.

I was now crouched over in a perfect shooting position with the 870 sitting tightly in my shoulder; I slowly raised the barrel and squeezed the trigger. Vlam! The shot rang out and once the dust settled the woodchuck lay very still under the large dagger like rock.

I removed the woodchuck from the den then placed the rocks back into a safe position blocking the hole, so that the cattle could not come near it. I then layed the woodchuck on its back so that it was resting on a patch of fresh grass allowing me to inspect its size while using my hunting knife to raise it front legs. And noticed its chest was full of ticks and fleas. He was without a doubt a tick bag and he sure was lookin’ right at me. One thing I have learned while hunting woodchuck is that there will always be an escape or spy hole, and if they can -they will be watching you too, so do not just focus on the one den once you’ve spotted the woodchuck but constantly check all the nearby holes and sometimes look right into the woods near the forest floor if the den is close to its edge.

There is one thing that is clear -the’re are always eyes on you when you are hunting.

Canine Trail

The first hare lead that I decided to track on this particular day was without a doubt one of the toughest this winter. Even though it had been much warmer over the past couple of days and it had also rained, the most recent snow fall had left the nearby field and swamp with waist deep snow rendering my progress slow. There was a slight overcast in the sky and the temperature was three below zero. Once in a while as the clouds would clear the sun would break through and momentarily warm my face and hands.

I had no choice but to leave the car parked at the main entrance of the property and set off on foot in an easterly direction down a small slope onto the frozen swamp. The snow was just too high on the road. The swamp was located on the northern edge of the main country road and the trees nearby created a natural canopy of pine and cedar mixed in with straw sticking out of the snow and the area was littered with tracks.

Right away I noticed a trail that looked like it belonged to a mink or even a fisher. It had very distinct claw marks in the snow similar to that of raccoons. So I pressed on until I hit the western edge of the hay-field on the northern side, still following the lead. I took advantage of the change in vegetation to stop and catch my breath also to observe. On my left there was a large pine tree, surrounded by smaller bushes. I was looking left and right looking for any sign of snowshoe hare activity. This is when I spotted several more tracks and noticed some fur and then a blood trail.

The ravens above me were being very loud and kind of gliding just above me like turkey vultures. At the base of the tree there were carrion remains and a large skull. It was not a sight for the faint of heart as there was some muscle and fat tissue still attached and all its teeth were intact. A farmer had told me that the hide alone could weigh in at around one hundred pounds and that it would take several coyotes or wolves to drag that away but it was nowhere to be found. I had wanted to hunt hare in the morning and then try for rock dove after lunch, but after a sight like this and being in the bush alone my instinct was telling me that maybe I should move on.

There were canine tracks everywhere in various sizes and the tracks that I found were only a few hours old. I then decided to move north back to the eastern side of the quarry, where I had harvested my last hare and continue to search for more leads. As I left the swamp and the wood line near the road across the field to the south, I saw additional tracks and followed them some more and this is when I found large droppings as well as a well-traveled trail filled with paw marks. There was set in particular that was very large. There wasn’t just one canine with me in the woods like there was a few weeks ago, it was now more like two or three.

The paw tracks were almost too large to be that of a coyote, perhaps a timber wolf. So, I followed the trail some more because there were also fresh hare tracks nearby leading to the creek. When the forest cover got too thick and the snow was still knee-deep, especially with carrion around, I did not dare venture deeper into the darker part of the wilderness.
There were scattered pockets of evergreen, old wooden planks resting up against a barbed wired fence, offering plenty of cover. By this time I was now experiencing a strong feeling, that I was no longer alone and I also felt I was not necessarily a wanted presence.

I slowly turned toward the heavily travelled trail full of paw marks to the west and took several photos before heading back to the car for lunch. You know, a couple of days have passed since this feeling that came over me in the woods and yet while I am sitting on the bus going to work a part of me that is truly curious wanted to seek beyond the darkness in that evergreen.

By mid afternoon, I had made my way to the farm and met up with the farmer who was tending to his cattle and he had granted me the right to attempt to harvest some rock doves that were eating his grain. He had scattered some feed for his cows and then brought several buckets of water to the calves that were taking shelter in one of the smaller barns. He had mentioned to me that the rock doves were clearing out the grain on the ground and that it could start getting expensive. So, some assistance with this would be appreciated.
 
Even though rock doves are the same bird we see in the city, out in the country their behavior is quite different and this is to be expected. They see very well and if spooked they do not just fly a short distance away to safety then come back. Sometimes they will fly away over the forested ridge and not come back for several hours or not return at all.
 
For me there was a flock of five birds in my sights. One of the strangest occurrences that I had experienced was several weeks prior I set out to harvest the farm pigeons. I made the mistake of pointing to them and talked about my approach with another hunter out loud and the birds immediately flew away and did not return for two days according to the farmer.
 
This time it was going to be different, very different. I started by walking over to the car and continued to talk to the farmer and not pay attention to the birds at all. They were sitting on the trim of the barns roof. And a precision shot was out of the question. I had only packed my 870 with me and did not bring my .22.
 
Down on the southern ridge there were two older barns and the rock doves had made their nest inside. So, I slowly walked up to the gate at the cow enclosure and the opening to the southwestern field.
 
I stood there for a moment watching for rock dove activity. Sure enough within a few minutes a group of three flew in and landed nearby. I slowly moved back to car to get into a better shooting position but failed and spooked them and they took off circled in the air and descended to the second barn on the southern ridge.

It was very difficult to move about and align a shot. The birds were easily spooked and I could not shoot at the barn roof, I had to watch for the trucks, tractors and finally the cattle.
 
I slowly re-positioned myself and used an old tractor for cover and managed to get down the slope and enter the first abandoned barn from the northern side. There was a small window and a door on the southern edge and I had a clear shot on the pigeons, but there was one problem. I was carrying my 870 and I could shoot the roof.
 
With my .22, I could have taken a clear shot through an opening in the barn without exposing myself. This would have been a great shot under total concealment but this was not a possibility. I asked myself: What kind of approach could be used without scaring them? The only option was to jump shoot them, so I stood at the doorway and leaped outside, this seem to work since they hastily bounced into flight.
 
I took aim at the last one of the group and fired a shot, the bird swerved and dove and broke into an even faster flight and all three disappeared into the tree line to the east. It was a miss. Dang! I had to wait another forty minutes or so for them to come back, so I climbed the ridge and went back to the main gate.

Sure enough two rock doves flew in from the east heading west straight between the two smaller barns and over the gate and settled in the snow nearby. I quickly went down to my knees and crouched my way around the barn to the north and staying as low as I could I positioned myself in a kneeling position on the north-western side of the barn to my right.

The two birds were still feeding but never kept still, once the birds were not in the line of sight with the cattle, I rose my 870 and in one single motion, stood up and sent the rock doves into flight, Vlam! The shot rang out and I had harvested my first pigeon of the season.

Rock dove may not compare to big game trophies but it is most definitely an exhilarating hunt and great practice for the waterfowl season.

Technical Details
The Viridian Balustrade System consists of 10mm, 12mm or 15mm toughened glass that may also require laminating depending on the application. The glass is set upright in a groove in structural concrete or a steel channel. The glass panels are located on neoprene setting blocks and a special non-shrink grout is used. The grout is capped off with silicone. The channel must be designed to resist the twisting movements applied to the glass balustrade.

Important Considerations
Australian Standard AS1288 and New Zealand Standard NZS4223 with design loads from AS/NZS1170.1 must be complied with in the construction of a balustrade. If the balustrade is protecting a difference in level of more than one meter, a separate handrail capable of withstanding the design load independent of the glass must be used. The designer must determine that in the case of accidental or deliberate damage, any falling glass can cause no public danger. In these situations, the use of toughened laminated glass or fully framed laminated glass is recommended. It is also recommended that all toughened glass used in frameless or bolted structural balustrades be specified with Viridian heat soak treatment.

Features and Benefits

Safety – in vertical or sloped overhead applications, laminated glass can resist penetration from accidental impact. If the glass is broken, fragments adhere to the interlayer and are retained in place. VLam provides safety from contact with broken or falling glass, or bodily injury by falling through the glass. In certain applications, toughened laminated glass must be used, such as sloped overhead glass.

Security – standard laminated glass provides resistance to penetration from physical attack. By increasing the thickness of the interlayer and its strength, as well as using multiple glass interlayer constructions, products are offered for specialist security applications including bullet and bomb resistance. Noise Control – VLam provides good noise dampening over the same thickness of float glass. By incorporating VLam into an insulating glass unit (IGU), excellent noise attenuation can be achieved. UV Elimination – the PVB interlayer used in VLam eliminates 99 percent of ultraviolet radiation. When incorporated with solar control glass, fading can be reduced more than 8 times over normal glass.

Solar Control – VLam can be manufactured with toned solar control glass and interlayers providing glare and solar heat gain reductions. Further to this, VLam can be customised with virtually any Viridian solar control glass for the ideal balance between daylight solar control and thermal insulation.

Colour and Decoration – soft white and translucent white interlayers along with the Viridian DécorPattern glass options are available for privacy and light diffusion. Custom Laminating
The laminating process provides almost limitless options in glass configurations. Combinations of solar control glass, special interlayers, Low E and coated glass, as well as decorative glass provide tailored solutions. Toughened laminated glass is also available for large overhead spans and additional safety in balustrades and Viridian Structural Glazing Systems. Glass options for floors and very thick glass for aquariums are also available.

Die eerste is Boendoe (Vlam), wat haar blog gesluit het.  Dis niks lekker nie, en ek wens haar alle krag en sterkte toe met wat ook al die probleem is.  Hel, ek dink dis waar van ons almal: ons hou meer van haar as wat sy ooit kan weet.  Mag dinge gou weer regkom, en sy terug by ons wees.

Die ander is Mev Dalene Fordham wat so verniel is deur die Metropolisie.  Al het sy miskien ‘n oortreding begaan, is dit goor om te sien dat sy bloei – aan die hande van die polisie wat veronderstel is om ons beskermers te wees.  En te hoor dat hulle sommer skiet – net om iemand te stop wat miskien ‘n verkeersoortreding begaan het.  Ek verneem die polisie skiet gedurig onskuldige mense raak, en as hulle haar raakgeskiet  het – sy is nog steeds onskuldig.  Ons almal begaan maar soms ‘n verkeersoortreding.  Wat ‘n klomp fokken cowboys!

En allerlei slegte goed wat verder met haar gebeur het, langs die pad en by die polisiestasie.

Wel, hou jou kop omhoog mev Forham, jy is pragtig, en hulle is ‘n klomp narre.

Meet Leon. I suppose you noted the consternation of the jury not only when they saw a 64-year old doing an audition in what is basically a program targeted at youngsters, especially when they saw Leon end his audition with a split. The best of all this? Leon was actually entered into the competition by Milk (VLAM) as a part of the campaign they’re running to show that drinking milk on a daily basis will help you to stay fit and flexible.

Obviously nobody knew about Leon being part of an ad campaign until we (Duval Guillaume) revealed it after the show was aired on television. This was one of the first campaigns where I was part of the team that developed it so it was especially great for me to see the outcome of it.

Noordzee

Op de kalender zijn enkel de vissoorten vermeld die door onze vissers worden aangevoerd.  Natuurlijk is de viskalender maar een richtlijn, het beste aankoopmoment is ook afhankelijk van klimatologische omstandigheden en vangstbeperkingen.  Vraag dus best advies aan je visspecialist.

Deze bedenking is echter maar klein bier in vergelijking met een ander probleem. Voor veel soorten gaat het niet alleen om de periode, maar vooral ook over de manier en hoeveelheid waarop ze gevist worden. Ik geef even het voorbeeld van de schol.

Schol is best okee als hij door middel van zegenvisserij gevangen wordt, met een groot net waarmee de vissen als het ware uit de zee geschept worden. De netten hebben vrij grote mazen, waardoor er weinig kleine/jonge vissen mee naar boven komen. Het is echter niet zo okee als hij gevangen is met boomkor (netten die over de zeebodem slepen) of twinrig (de lichtere vorm van boomkor), waarbij er veel ‘bijvangst’ is, en de bodem beschadigd wordt. Het is al helemaal te mijden als hij gevangen is als bijvangst van tong in de boomkorvisserij met kleine mazen.

Maar als consument kan je daar bijster weinig rekening mee houden in de winkel omdat het niet op de verpakking aangegeven wordt. Ik hou mij dus voorlopig aan de lijst van de Vlam, en verdiep mij tegen volgende maand in visserijtechnieken en quota.

Fusion üstünde çalışırken Vlam'ın menü yapısı

Er wordt de laatste maanden nogal wat afgeklaagd over de stijgende voedselprijzen in de winkel. De meesten onder ons zullen dit zeker voelen in de portefeuille. Maar doet die hogere prijs ons ook minder eten?

In opdracht van VLAM en Vlaams minister-president Kris Peeters volgt onderzoeksbureau GfK de voedingsaankopen van 4.000 gezinnen op de voet. Wat blijkt: de Belgen kochten vorig jaar zelfs meer dan het jaar voordien. Zeker wat betreft dierlijke voeding. De prijzen voor dierlijke producten stegen met 1,7 procent, maar toch lag het aangekochte volume 4,2 procent hoger.

Op Foodlog.nl stelde Ailko Faber onlangs de vraag: “Want hoe beleven we het eten. Ik heb een tijdje met vischef Imko Binnerts mogen werken. Zijn slogan was “uit eten: wij doen het iedere dag en maken er een feestje van.”

Hoe ziet jouw feestje eruit? Wat eet je? Met wie, waar, wanneer? Waar koop je? Ben je bang voor wat het eetcafé je voorzet? Wie vertrouw je dan wel? Zit er een ritme en patroon in wat je eet – zoals zaterdag pizza-dag, zondag soepdag met brood – of juist niet?”

Hoe de gemiddelde Vlaming dit ziet, vind je vandaag in het Nieuwsblad. Wat ik er voor mezelf alvast uithaal: voor de Vlaming is “iedere dag vlaaidag”. Niet écht verrassend, want we zijn en blijven vooral een volk van snoepers. En klagers…

We wandelen langs brede banen en komen ineens aan de grens met Henegouwen. Ellezelles noemt het hier. En nu hebben we smalle paadjes. Brokkenpaden zodanig dat we onze voeten wel kunnen plaatsen en niet naar beneden glijden. Soms moet ik me eerder schrijlings schoorvoetend voortbewegen.  De wandelaars  dalen af, steken de weg over, en dan brengen de pijlen ons naar het Muziekbos.
