I just stumbled onto a post that was several months old:

End of road for nLite/vLite? Microsoft hires Dino Nuhagic

Update: That link is dead

Mirror: http://brokencontrollers.com/end-of-road-for-nlite-vlite-microsoft-hires-dino-nuhagic-t313944.php

If this is true, it would explain why the man has gone quiet and no new work has been done on vLite for quite some time.

For those that don’t know, nLite and vLite remove so-called “integrated” Windows components from the Windows XP and Windows Vista installers, respectively.

Logically, I could see why Microsoft would want to hire the man to get him to stop undermining their claims that this crap is a “non-removable component of Windows” rather than foistware pushed on the end user in order to illegally stifle the competition.

Earlier in vLite development, the Redmond bully forbade him from distributing the 44 kilobyte WIM image filter necessary to customize Windows ISO images, forcing the user to download a 1.1 GIGABYTE ISO image of the Windows Automated Installation Kit to get the offending driver.

With the EU after Microsoft for illegally bundling Idiot Exploiter and other software unrelated to an operating system, it can’t look good that there are utilities out there that can in fact surgically remove it.

Unfortunately with Windows 7 approaching, users could never have needed a utility to strip down Windows more, as the installer will copy all files for the Ultimate Edition to the users hard disk regardless of the version they bought, and will leave them there, functionless, until the user pays Microsoft more money to “activate” them.

Nobody can seem to get Nuhagic to comment on what in fact is going on, leading to more speculation, but I for one hope that Microsoft has not hired him to simply put him out of business like they did with SysInternals…

Windows Vista from Microsoft takes a lot of resources, we all know that. vLite provides you with an easy removal of the unwanted components in order to make Vista run faster and to your liking. This tool doesn’t use any kind of hacking, all files and registry entries are protected as they would be if you install the unedited version only with the changes you select. It configures the installation directly before the installation, meaning you’ll have to remake the ISO and reinstall it. This method is much cleaner, not to mention easier and more logical than doing it after installation on every reinstall.

vLite Main Features:
- hotfix, language pack and driver integration
- component removal
- unattended setup
- tweaks
- split/merge Vista installation CDs
- create ISO and burn bootable CD/DVD

Bien maintenant nous arrivons dans la dernières étapes, c’est a dire choisir les bon logiciel, je vais vous donner ce que moi j’utilise pour optimiser mon système ;

http://allplayer.forumshotel.org/download/file.php?mode=view&id=2&sid=e37c99f75e431bc318fbac2e059b8670

Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware : http://www.clubic.com/telecharger-fiche215092-malwarebytes-anti-malware.html

Spybot : http://www.clubic.com/telecharger-fiche10965-spybot-search-destroy.html

Super antispyware: http://www.clubic.com/telecharger-fiche67090-superantispyware-free-edition.html

After going through the obligatory Windows initialization process with my new Dell Mini 9, I proceed

After going through the obligatory Windows initialization process with my new Dell Mini 9, I proceeded to follow the plan that I outlined in a previous posting. After checking that the system had the A04 BIOS installed, I then used the application called CloneZilla to make a backup image of the virgin Windows XP installation on the disk. With this backup image, I can always reinstall the system files exactly to the original state of the Dell Mini.

I then inserted my USB Flash Drive (bootable) containing the Windows 7 Beta installation files and rebooted the Mini 9 (having the system boot up from a USB drive). After a few seconds, the Windows 7 installation procedure began to start. I followed the simple instructions, and away it went through the installation. When it finally got to the part where it was ready to reboot the system, I still had the USB drive connected to the Mini 9 and the system began the installation procedure again. To remedy this, I simply removed the USB drive and rebooted the system again. It then came up and continued with the final stages of the initialization process. What was a bit discerning, was the length of time Windows 7 took in the final stages of the initialization phase, as it gave no indication that it was doing anything (no hourglass or progress bar displayed). I remained patient, and after several minutes the system finished with the initialization and rebooted again.

Windows 7 then went through a setup process of checking the video performance, etc. which took several minutes before it came up with the main desktop screen. I then followed the suggestions on this web site to install Vista Drivers (for the Dell Mini 12) which are compatible with Windows 7. Finally, with a wireless Internet connection active I did a Windows Update which installed 4 updated drivers on my system.

I have to note, that I used vLite to create a custom Windows 7 installation, where I stripped out components, drivers, etc. that I was certain I wouldn’t need. By doing this, I was able to reduce the final OS installation size down to 5.5 GB of space.

After I got the Win7 OS installed and tweaked to my satisfaction, I began to install the handful of apps that I felt I needed on this machine. I installed everything on the main SSD drive, and the final amount of free space ended up being the following:

So, I’ll probably be in good shape space-wise if I install files on an SDHC card. So now the real evaluation begins…

In my last posting, I discussed how to create a custom Windows XP installation using the nLite produ

In my last posting, I discussed how to create a custom Windows XP installation using the nLite product. In a similar fashion, you can use a product called vLite to create a custom Vista and/or Windows 7 installation that is slimmed down in size. This link has an excellent step-by-step procedure outlined to do this specifically for the Dell Mini 9.

Now, I’ve read several postings on the MyDellMini forum where people have praised how quick Windows 7 (beta) runs on their Minis verses Windows XP and Vista, so I’m thinking of installing Windows 7 just for kicks. I downloaded the beta version ISO file from Microsoft when they first made it available (earlier this month), however, I decided to not install it since the beta version will expire in July 08 and I didn’t want to reinstall Vista or WinXP on one of my computers. But, my new Dell Mini (when it finally arrives) might be the perfect machine to test Windows 7.

So, I went ahead and tested vLite using the Windows 7 beta installation files, and the procedure is very similar to using nLite. I followed the directions from the site that I mentioned earlier, and was able to reduce the Windows 7 install file size from 2.5 GB to 1.5 GB for my custom installation. Now, the Windows 7 beta ISO file that I used was for the “Ultimate” version, so I probably could have stripped out more components to make it smaller (and I might do so later just for kicks).

Of course, before I install Windows 7 I’ll clone my existing WinXP system disk on the Dell Mini so I can re-image it later and be right back to WinXP if I don’t like Windows 7 or when the beta version expires.

So, I’m ready to install Windows 7 if and when my Dell Mini ever arrives from Dell…

Updated (29 Jan 08): As a test, I tried installing my vLite version of Windows 7 on a “Virtual PC” which I created using Microsoft Virtual PC. I just want to see if Win7 would install, and if any problems would appear because of the components that I removed using vLite. As it turned out, the installation went trouble-free, and I’ve got Win7 running in a virtual environment. The first thing Win7 did after the install was ask to install two updates from the Internet (Windows Defender Update and Win7 Client Update), which it did successfully. So the final installation took up 4.44 GB of disk space on the Virtual PC. Now, I followed the component removal suggestions from the link mentioned previously, so I might be able to reduce the installation size further if I’m willing to try removing more stuff. But for now, I can live with using up 4.44 GB of storage space if I use an SDHC card for my other applications and/or files.

A friend of mine just recently obtained his very first real computer. And by real computer I of cour

A friend of mine just recently obtained his very first real computer. And by real computer I of course mean one that is running Windows (Note: some linux computers are also real computers). Unfortunately, it is a sickly machine that suffers from a severe case of obesity, since it is running Vista. Sure, Vista is beautiful and has some neat little functions. But there is nothing of importance that Vista can do that XP can’t, and the amount of resources taken up just to run the stupid OS (Operating System) makes my spleen cry. Which is uncomfortable.

Rambling aside, I was asked to write something detailing all of the various things that should be done to a Windows machine, and that is what I am going to do. Bear in mind, however, that I am discussing what should be done with XP, since that is the OS with which I am familiar. I imagine most of this, especially the software, applies to Vista as well. For that which doesn’t apply, I imagine there are Vista versions. Hopefully. And, of course, see my Disclaimer before doing anything that I recommend. Or installing anything that I suggest. And cetera.

First things first:

Trimming the OS

The sad fact is that Windows makes huge, fat, drooling operating systems. They can’t help it. Windows comes with every kind of functionality that you could ever not need, so the first thing that I always do (after, of course, installing drivers) is to trim the gristle. There are a few ways to do this, and you should find an increase in performance and a decrease in boot time if you maximize use of these methods. Be careful, though, as these procedures can easily cripple your system of you disable the wrong thing.

nLite (or, more accurate, “gastric bypass”)

The best way to get a sleek Windows is to take the lard right out of the recipe. This can be done with the free application nLite, which allows you to make a customized Windows installation disk. This requires that you own a copy of Windows and the corresponding disk, and that you have a computer with which to create your new OS and burn it to disk. I won’t go into details in this post (see this lifehacker entry for a quick-and-dirty tutorial), but make sure that you look up each item before you prevent it from being put on your install disk, since nLite allows you to remove critical OS components. For example, the current XP installation that I am running on my Asus Eee PC is missing some networking thing which has disabled my ability to get onto Battle.net for playing Diablo (though it boots up in 17 seconds!). Don’t let this happen to you!

For Vista, there is a newer project called vLite that does the same thing. I don’t know much about it, so you’ll have to look into it if you are running that morbidly obese OS.

A few remaining points: If you are installing Windows freshly then you will have to also install drivers for all of your hardware. If you don’t have a disk, you can find all of the drivers on support websites from the manufacturers, though this can sometimes be difficult. So if you aren’t savvy with this stuff, either find someone who is or rely on the other measures listed below that are less dangerous and difficult.

Lastly, this process requires some understanding of disk images. Perhaps I’ll discuss that in another post, but if you aren’t familiar with making and mounting iso files, then you’ll want to brush up on that stuff before you start making your own Windows disk.

autoruns

I love this little app. It’s made by Microsoft, and so is quite legitimate. You can either download autoruns to your computer or run it off of the internet from its website.

This program lets you disable pretty much any process that XP will run (not sure about Vista). When you open the program up, you’ll notice a bunch of tabs at the top. The “Everything” tab shows you all of the things that you can disable (there are a lot). The easiest thing to do is to go to the “Logon” tab, which shows you all things that run once Windows logs you on:

As you can see, there is a list of applications with checkboxes. Turn off everything that you don’t need (which includes nearly all of it). Many applications will run little mini-apps every time you start your machine. These things will check for updates, monitor things on your computer, or otherwise suck up resources for no good reason. As you can see, the only things that I have left running are apps for my video card, sound, Launchy (to be discussed later), and Explorer. You need Explorer, since that is the interface that you ue to communicate with Windows. If you have a bit of savvy, go into the other tabs and disable everything else you know that you don’t need. Google things that you aren’t sure about.

ccleaner

Or, colloquially, “crap cleaner.” This software is great for getting rid of all of the temporary files and things that Windows holds onto. This keeps your hard drive clean more than anything else, and even has secure deletion to actually remove temp files, browser history, and the like. But, for the purposes of this post, it can also be used to disable applications from startup. This mostly includes non-OS apps, so it is not nearly as useful as autoruns in this regard, but it is certainly much easier to use. I would recommend disabling, but not deleting, the things that you don’t want running. That way you can always enable something again if you want to.

built-in uninstallation

Fortunately, XP comes with a way to get rid of some of its vestigial parts. Of course, when it says that it is uninstalling something this sometimes means that it is just getting rid of some evidence of that thing’s existence. But it actually doesn’t get rid of it. This is especially true of the browser idiot-child Internet Explorer (IE). You would be better off using Lynx.

Anyway, to start removing stuff go to Start -> Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs. This will bring you to a window that has a pane on the left with several options. Click on “Add/Remove Windows Components”. You’ll see this:

Get rid of Windows Messenger and anything else that you don’t use. Google it if you’re unsure.

End!

That about covers this part. Sorry for the lack of detail; I figure anyone looking into this has enough savvy to do the rest on his own, or at least is good at Googling stuff. My next post will move on to tweaking the user interface and, most important, software!

NOTA

O vLite requer o Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 instalado.

component removal

unattended setup

split/merge Vista installation CDs

create ISO and burn bootable CD/DVD

Windows Vista from Microsoft takes a lot of resources, we all know that. vLite provides you with an easy removal of the unwanted components in order to make Vista run faster and to your liking.

This tool doesn’t use any kind of hacking, all files and registry entries are protected as they would be if you install the unedited version only with the changes you select.

It configures the installation directly before the installation, meaning you’ll have to remake the ISO and reinstall it. This method is much cleaner, not to mention easier and more logical than doing it after installation on every reinstall.
