Finally the “real” bands are starting to appear for this year’s event

I tend to go on audio binges — songs, albums and / or artists. Sometimes they last for a day, other times — and possibly to the distress of those around me — I stay submerged for days, weeks or months. (Yes, months.) I recently went on one of these euphonic benders, emerging ever so briefly for a breath of fresh air, only to be sucked into a second. Personally, I revel in every moment of my obsessing, but I can see how it becomes unpalatable for others after awhile.

My first trip started with the entire VNV Nation catalog. They have seven studio albums, plus a disc of live material, so the breadth of material is on the wide side. But eventually I narrowed it down to a handful of songs — five, to be exact.

Put that in your iPod and shuffle it, I say. (For the record, there was actually a stray Wolfsheim track thrown in as well — “Künstliche Welten” for those of you who are actually reading.) I took mercy on the cats, though, and decided this morning that I should change my tune. I put a few things on — some Autechre, half of the Tear Garden’s catalog and maybe something else that I can’t even remember anymore because I’m In It again. I’m now going to curl up with my book (Idoru), my head full of sequence diagrams and my infinite loop of five songs, but I leave you with this:

I’ve wanted to go to Europe for a very long time. I find myself becoming extremely jealous when I hear other people’s tales of backpacking and European adventures. Oz and I often discuss going to Scotland so he can visit his home country — his mother’s maiden name is Dewar, as in Dewar’s scotch whiskey.

It was a strange morning, yet kind of normal for us. We listened to Darkwave, VNV Nation, and Johnny Vicious house mixes while I made breakfast. Then, Oz brought up Wave Gotik Treffen, the world’s largest festival for “dark culture,” which takes place in Leipzig, Germany every May 21-24.

Upon first glance, it looks like a Hot Topic festival.

But this is the real deal, folks.

At Wave Gotik Treffen, there are a variety of people. From Victorian Goths to gutter punks, to steampunks, there’s a little something for everyone. But it’s not just about the clothes and make-up, it’s about the music. WGT offers more than 150 bands and artists from various backgrounds  such as Gothic rock, EBM, Industrial, Noise, Darkwave, Neofolk, Neoclassical, Medieval Music, Experimental, Gothic metal, Deathrock and Punk.

Oz and I are both kind of scared of the festival, but we’re also very intrigued. I’d love to go experience something completely different like that, if only for the fact that I could blog about it after. Plus, Oz looks great in eyeliner.

From black metal to folk, from gothic to country, from classical to classics, from rock to hip-hop, I have found over time that there is simply too much wonderful music around to be exclusive to only one genre. Corny, serious, hardcore, or quirky, I enjoy it all. Allow me to share.

Bueno como ya vimos en el post anterior la literatura Steampunk es muy amplia, hoy lo que toca, son los grupos de musica Steampunk. Parece mentira, pero hay grupos que la musica que tocan la denominan de ese genero o los fans los engloban en ese genero.

Vamos a dar un pequeño repaso por algunos de los más (y menos) conocidos de estos grupos. Empecemos pues…

Abney Park

Este no es un grupo novel, sino todo lo contrario pues ya tienen unos cuantos discos a sus espaldas, se llaman Abney Park (echadle un ojo a lo currada que está la web) y que son el grupo Steampunk más famoso del mundo. Tienen un vestuario y estetica muy currada y las canciones estan bien.

Beat Circus

Aunque se les puede englobar en la corriente musical de Dark Cabaret, es una banda con ya unos cuantos años de antiguedad y que cuenta con muchos seguidores. Su musica es cuanto menos peculiar y es como poco bastante tetrica.

Dr. Steel

Su nombre completo es Phineas Waldolf Steel, y el es un musico americano residente en el sur de California, es bastante conocido en los ambientes goticos, Steampunk y Rivethead. Ademas de ser un cantante (ver mas adelante) tambien es un showman que hace sus gags. Para muestra un boton:

Dresden Dolls

Los Dresden Dolls son un duo musical americano llegados desde Boston (Massachusetts). El grupo fue formado en el 2000, y esta compuesto por Amanda Palmer (voz, piano, armonica y ukelele (si, leiste bien)) y Brian Viglione (bateria, percusion, guitarra, bajo y voz). Ellos se describen como “Brechtian punk cabaret”, Forman parte de la corriente Dark Cabaret, pero tiene reminicencias steampunk, y la web tiene algo que me da escalofrios…

Este frances esta en la palestra steampunk desde 1999, y lleva 4 discos a sus espaldas. Su musica es instrumental y alguna que me parece más dance que otra cosa, y tambien mucho trip hop. Este grupo a mi entender es steampunk mas que nada por las portadas de los discos…

The Muse

¿Que es que alguien no conoce este grupo?. Muse es una banda inglesa de rock alternativo, originaria de Teignmouth, Devon. Está compuesta por Matthew Bellamy (compositor, voz, guitarra, teclado y piano); Dominic Howard (batería y percusión). y Christopher Wolstenholme (bajo eléctrico, teclados y coros). Tras el lanzamiento de su cuarto álbum, Morgan Nicholls colabora con la banda durante los conciertos, haciéndose cargo de teclados, samples y de algunos coros.[1] Su música cuenta con influencia de compositores clásicos, especialmente, aquellos de la era romántica, tales como Sergéi Rajmáninov. La banda es famosa por sus enérgicas actuaciones en vivo y los excéntricos intereses del líder Bellamy en la conspiración global, vida extraterrestre, teología y el apocalipsis.

Ben Houge

Más que un musico como Bisbal Abney Park, Ben es el encargado de de poner sonidos en muchos de los juegos a los que estamos acostumbrados a viciar, de hecho trabaja en Ubilol Ubisoft. Desde luego a trabajado en juegos tan miticos como: Tom Clancy’s EndWar, Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30, la saga Half-Life, SWAT 3: Close Quarters Battle, King’s Quest: Mask of Eternity, entre otros. Y ya solo por trabajar para la mitica empresa de videojuegos Sierra (que el Diox de los jugones tenga en su gloria) ya se merece estar aqui. Toca generos tan dispares como Electro-Acoustica, Coral, Vocal, liturgica, orquestal, etc. Vamos un autentico crack, la pega que para trabajar en juegos tan chulos tiene una web digna del siglo XIX…

El se define como compositor/diseñador de sonido/performer/cuentacuentos/”curandero”. Criado en Nueva York, este artista crea una musica inquietante y curiosa.

Unextraordinary Gentlemen

Este trio crea una musica bizarra y muy barroca, mezclando instrumentos clasicos con cajas de ritmos y demas parafernalia futurista. La estetica es Steampunk abogan -habitualmente- por un punk-folk extraño con ciertas excepciones y a partir de ahí juegan mucho con el factor estético.

Vernian Process

El grupo fue creado en el 2003 y segun ellos mismos cuentan su inspiración es el escritor frances Jules Gabriel Verne (1828 – 1905). Ellos dicen que la estetica Steampunk es genial. Ya cuentan con 5 albums a sus espaldas y una cosa que no os debeis perder es el video que os adjunto…

Nine Inch Nails

Nine Inch Nails (abreviado NIN) es una banda estadounidense de rock industrial fundada en 1988 por Trent Reznor en Cleveland, Ohio, Estados Unidos. Como su principal productor, cantante, compositor e instrumentista, Reznor es el único miembro oficial de Nine Inch Nails y el único responsable de la dirección de la banda. La música de Nine Inch Nails abarca un gran número de géneros musicales, aunque mantiene un sonido característico utilizando instrumentos electrónicos y procesamiento en el estudio de grabación. Después de grabar cada nuevo álbum de estudio, Reznor forma una banda de músicos para las giras y conciertos. Esta banda suele ser cambiante y hace arreglos en las canciones para ajustarlas a las actuaciones en directo. En el escenario, NIN suele utilizar elementos visuales espectaculares para sus actuaciones, entre las que destaca el espectáculo lumínico. Los Videos como el que pongo aqui tienen claras reminiscencias al Steampunk.

Se llama realmente Aurelio Voltaire Hernández y nacio en el 1967, en Cuba es un famoso cantante de la escena gotica americana. Tiene canciones muy pegadizas y ademas de cantante tambien hace animacion, dibuja comic y es profesor en la escuela de artes visuales de Nueva York.

Tool es una banda estadounidense de metal progresivo surgida en 1990 en Los Ángeles, California. Ha vendido más de trece millones de discos en todo el mundo y ha ganado tres premios Grammy hasta la fecha; ha encabezado giras y prestigiosos festivales y ha producido exitosos álbumes que alcanzaron grandes niveles de ventas gracias a su estatus de culto en el mundo de la música. Nightwish

Nightwish es un grupo de metal sinfónico procedente de Finlandia, conocidos en todo el mundo por sus fuertes y melódicos riffs de guitarra, atmósferas de órgano y sintetizador, potente batería y claro sonido de bajo que hace un buen contraste con su apoyo filarmónico/orquestal. Nightwish es considerada una de las bandas más representativas de este género.

Su género musical es bastante discutido. Cabe señalar que son muy reconocidos por haber brindado una gran diversidad de cualidades de power metal llevándolo a un nivel muy potente, y a la vez combinando al género con metal sinfónico, algunos toques de folk y thrash metal siendo éstos los que ponen a debatir la etimología de su música.

Dead Can Dance

Dead Can Dance es un grupo musical procedente de Australia, compuesto por Lisa Gerrard y Brendan Perry. Dead Can Dance se formó en Melbourne en el año 1981 estableciéndose inicialmente en Australia. Al no tener grandes perspectivas de éxito en ese país se trasladaron a Londres donde tras un año firmaron para el legendario sello de rock alternativo 4AD, convirtiéndose en una de sus bandas más importantes. Continuaron trabajando juntos hasta adentrados los ‘90, cuando comenzaron a trabajar por separado. Lisa Gerrard retornó a Australia, mientras Brendan Perry se fue a Irlanda, lugar en que compró una vieja iglesia, Quivy Church, en la cual vive y trabaja.

Regina Spektor

La artista nació el 18 de febrero de 1980 en Moscú en el seno de una familia judía. Su padre, Ilya Spektor, fotógrafo, fue también violinista aficionado, mientras su madre es profesora de música, y enseñó en un colegio de música en Rusia, y actualmente lo hace en una escuela pública básica en Mount Vernon, localidad ubicada en la misma ciudad en la que ellos residen.

La familia abandonó Rusia en 1989, durante la Perestroika, cuando a los ciudadanos rusos se les permitió emigrar del país. En su páis natal, Spektor tocaba el piano desde que tenía seis años, y escuchaba bandas de rock, como The Beatles y Queen. Cuentan que de pequeña Regina soñaba con ser concertista clásica de piano y que los primeros años de su nueva vida en Norteamérica, habiendo tenido que dejar su instrumento en su lejano país de nacimiento, los pasaba la niña practicando escalas en cualquier superficie plana, ya fuera el tablero de una mesa o el alféizar de una ventana. Sus videos son como goticos, pero molan las cancioncillas…

Evanescence

Evanescence es una banda estadounidense de metal gótico fundada en Little Rock, Arkansas en 1998 por la vocalista Amy Lee y el guitarrista Ben Moody.

Después de grabar dos EP independientes, Evanescence EP, Sound Asleep, y Origin en el año 2000 con ayuda de la discográfica Bigwig Enterprises, la banda lanzó su primer álbum de estudio, Fallen, con la discográfica Wind-up Records en el año 2003. Fallen vendió más de 15 millones de copias alrededor del mundo y la banda ganó dos premios Grammy. Un año más tarde, la banda lanzó su primer DVD en vivo, Anywhere but Home, el cual vendió más de 1 millón de copias alrededor del mundo. En el 2006, la banda lanzó su segundo álbum de estudio, The Open Door que hasta la fecha ha vendido más de 5 millones de copias en todo el mundo. Y si amiguitos y amiguitas a pesar de que son un grupo conocido y famoso no me direis que tiene un aire Steampunk…

Portishead

Portishead es el nombre de un grupo musical británico, de tendencia trip hop, formado en Bristol en 1991.Su segundo álbum Portishead, salió a la venta en 1997 e incluyó el sencillo “All Mine”. Además, grabaron un concierto con acompañamiento de orquesta en Roseland, Nueva York, donde fueron interpretadas sus canciones más famosas. Éste, salió a la venta en 1998 con un DVD del concierto. En 1999 colaboraron con Tom Jones en una canción de su álbum Reload. Y no me direis que el video es Steampunk si hasta sale un tio con una camara de carrete, tecnologia obsoleta xD.

VNV Nation

VNV Nation es una agrupación de música electrónica originaria de Londres, ahora establecida en Hamburgo, que combina elementos de Electronic Body Music (EBM), Música Industrial y Synthpop, para formar lo que ellos llaman Futurepop. Los miembros son Ronan Harris y Mark Jackson. VNV Nation es la abreviación de Victory Not Vengeance (literalmente, Victoria No Venganza), un lema que hace alusión a la idea de que uno debe buscar el triunfo y no refugiarse en los lamentos. Temática que es tratada a lo largo de la discografía del grupo y que caracteriza su sonido.

Bien esta cantante solista es ideal para todos aquellos que quedaron enbelezados con la voz de Liv Kristine (exs theatre of tragedy y actual Leaves Eyes). Viene en esa apuesta lo de esta blonda cantante!. Se puede decir que esta englobada dentro del Gothic Rock.

The Clockwork Quartet

The Clockwork Quartet es una banda de musica que mezcla elementos de, musica experimental,folk y neo-victoriana. Es una de las bandas que traigo que más me gustan. Claramente te los puedes imaginar tocando en un mundo Steampunk, y encima su musica no suena nada mal. Su musica esta caracterizada por los “sonidos steampunk”, esto es maquinas de escribir, relojes, etc, ademas actuan caracterizados…

Oingo Boingo

Este grupo tiene videos con claras reminiscencias a este estilo, y como nota curiosa “Danny” Elfman (antiguo lider del grupo), es conocido principalmente por escribir música para las películas de Tim Burton, con quien debutó en 1985 como compositor de bandas sonoras con su película La gran aventura de Pee-Wee y con quien mantiene una extensa colaboración hasta el día de hoy o crear el famoso tema de la serie televisiva Los Simpson que, entre muchos otros trabajos, le han otorgado un gran prestigio a lo largo su ecléctica carrera musical.

Switchblade Symphony

Switchblade Symphony es un grupo estadounidense (san Francisco) formado en 1989, compuesto por Susan Wallace y Tina Root. El nombre de este grupo se debe a que es un grupo que mezcla muchos géneros, entre ellos; Gothic Rock, música orquestrada, Trip-Hop y Synthpop, creando un Darkwave bastante especial.

Este grupo es la leyenda noventera del Darkwave, creando el look de muñeca de trapo gótica (No confundir con las Gothic Lolitas, ellas emulan a muñecas de porcelana, no de trapo), al parecer inventaron o al menos popularizaron los Dread Falls (Muy utilizados por los Cybers), claro que ellas lo usaban para obtener el look de pelo de lana.

Vermillion Lies

Aunque son un grupo de cabaret, Vermillion Lies es justamente uno de estos grupos conceptuales. Cuentan la historia de dos hermanas que se separan; en el 2004, después de años incomunicadas se reencuentran y al no tener nada más puro que decirse, se comunican por medio de música, la intercambian y mezclan, al darse cuenta que la batahola es lo bastante agradable, se fusionan en una misma sustancia y Vermillion Lies cobra vida: una arpía únicamente separada por el día de nacimiento.

Deadly Nightshade Botanical Society

The Deadly Nightshade Botanical Society son Erica Roberts, Robert Hazelton, Robert Gardunia y Anastasia Oleinikov. La banda empezo a tocar en Agosto del 2007. El primer disco que sacaron fue, Clockwork Dreams.

Bueno creo que ya estan los grupos que yo personalmente diria que son o tienen algun toque steampunk, aunque hay que aclarar queno existe ninguna banda Steampunk perse, son diferentes evoluciones del Pop y el Heavy Metal y en algun caso Folk, con una gran dosis de pura estética nada mas; para escuchar música Steampunk habria que realizar un pequeño viaje en el tiempo y remontarse al siglo XIX.

Nachdem ich heute nur einmal mein kuscheliges Heim verlassen habe um mich zum Arzt zu schleppen ( der mich übrigens wegen Überfüllung wieder vor die Tür gesetzt hat –> wenns nicht besser ist, soll ich morgen wieder kommen), hatte ich genügend Zeit mich zu rehabilitieren. Hals hat fast wieder den normalen Umfang erreicht und auch der Tempoverbrauch ist im Gegensatz zu heute morgen stark reduziert. Viel trinken, Sinupret und heiße Zitrone helfen also doch!

Ergo: morgen wieder arbeiten!!

Nachdem ich dann heute morgen so gefrustet war, kam heute mein neues Packet für das 7. Studienvierteljahr. Allerdings mit Geo statt Physik.  :(

Schade, denn ich hatte mich auf Physik gefreut und nun heißt es weiter warten und hoffen, dass es nicht mehr all zu lange dauert. Schließlich muss ich die Hefte ja von Anfang an noch mal bearbeiten.

Heute habe ich mich dann mit “Fleißarbeiten” beschäftigt. D.h: Vokabeln ( Lat 1-3) abschreiben und üben, üben, üben.

Phase 6 ist schon ein super Programm und wesentlich zuverlässiger als  diverse andere Programme aus dem Internet…

Und hier habe ich noch ein Link mit Musik, die mich in den letzten Tagen morgens immer wunderbar in Motivationsstimmung gebracht hat:

Yesterday night I went to the VNV Nation concert at the Capitol in Hannover. As special guests Rotersand and Frozen Plasma were expected. The Capitol is an old cinema which has been converted into a place for live concerts and  parties. There is still a balcony, which can be used as well and the floor is made from wood, which is very comfortable for your feet. I really like the flair of the location.

Because the A37 it closed completely from the cross A37/A2 my navigational system and I got into some heavy dispute about which route to take, so I ended up driving around the city of Hannover for close to 45 minutes. It took me quite some time to figure out how to stop the fucking little piece of annoying hardware from trying to get me back on the closed road. (They seem to be renovating a bridge…) So I missed the first act of the evening and arrived when Rotersand were already half through their set list. Still they were really nice, the atmosphere was great – it was a great party and I even knew some songs! Their show was full of energy and the had a DJ on stage so most songs came with a new sound for me.

Next were VNV Nation. What could you say? Maybe just use Ronan’s own words: “Das ist einfach wunderbar!” After the first song the crowd was cheering for some minutes and you could see that the musicians on stage were taken by surprise completely. From the first few chords to the last unanswered calls for an enchore (unfortunately everybody wants to call it a day at some point) the concert was one great party. People were dancing and singing along during the songs and frenetically cheered for the band on stage and singing a melody line from the song “Perpetual”  (du-du-duu-dudududu) -  so when they ended their concert with this song the crowd was going crazy.

Seeing the expression on the musicians faces and the sparkling in their eyes during the show, I am quite sure, they enjoyed it as much as the audience.

A little annoying was one person, who seemed to take a video of the whole concert, which in turn made Ronan quite angry. Twice he demanded that guy to stop – maybe he did, maybe he didn’t – I don’t know. The guy was on the balcony.

After the concert, I went to the aftershow party at Dark Star club. The party was really nice. And the DJ was really good. He played EBM – electronic sounds whatever stuff and had a really nice playlist. The club itself is rather strange – I don’t know if I like it, yet. On the one hand it is decorated like a spaceship, with alien figures and metal and mirrors and the like and on the other hand it just looks like a plain entrance hall of a former business building which has been converted into a dance club. Strange combination and a very small club, too.

After the concert I noticed that there was not one single piece of Frozen Plasma merchandise but Solar Fake instead… Please don’t tell me I missed Solar Fake. Please.

I would really very much like to know how Ronan and the whole band would describe the Hannover show from their point of view. Really. VERY VERY MUCH. *curious* ^_^

Und wieder habe ich tolle neue Musik für mich entdeckt. Diesmal von Thorsten empfohlen, gleich süchtig geworden und schwupps – hier stell ich es rein:

Ich gebe zu – der heutigen Stimmung tut das Lied nicht soooo gut – bzw. eigentlich verstärkt es die Stimmung generell – egal ob die gut, verliebt, traurig oder neutral ist.

Und hier hab ich noch einen Track den ich auf der von mir dann gleich gekauften CD entdeckt habe und der mich an meine wilden Partyzeiten erinnert und extrem gut im Auto auf der Autobahn kommt

Und hier noch einer der für schöne elektronische Musik steht – den VNV Nation wohl macht. Ich bin kein Kenner dieser Gruppe – aber die CD “Judgement” ist echt toll – könnten ein paar mehr Titel drauf sein

Stereoklang has put together a page dedicated to synthpop nostalgica. The page will be filled over time with things like; what synthesizers did Kraftwerk use in this or this video/gig etc.

In the mean time check out some of the uploaded synthpop wallpapers that has been gathered around the web and if you have any of those orginal artists you would like to submit we are more than welcome to upload them as well, e.g. YMO, Logic System, Yazoo, Welle:Erdball, JM Jarre etc

Granted it will only have been roughly two years since the release of An End Has A Start, it made me smile to no end to discover the new brand new offering by, in my opinion, one of the more criminally underrated of the new new wave bands.  Birmingham’s Editors are set to release their brand new record entitled In This Light and On This Evening on the 13th of October via Kitchenware in the UK. The first single off the record is sure to become a live favourite and is already becoming one of my favourite songs from the band and it’s called Papllion.

It takes the ever-evolving dark post-punk sound the band has been honing since their 2005 debut The Back Room and applies a more raw and futuristic sheen through the increased use of synthesizers. This should not really come as a surprise as singer Tom Smith stated in interviews that the band in writing their new songs had become very influenced in making a record that evoked the sound of the Blade Runner soundtrack. Listening to Papillon for the first time, I must admit Blade Runner wasn’t the first time that came to my mind. I had almost done a double take upon hearing the lead synths and thought of the band VNV Nation and their anthemic industrial pop.  Needless to say, this did not detract from my going goo-goo over this track.

Who says post-punk is dead?

VNV Nation חוזרים השנה עם אלבום חדש “Of Faith Power And Glory” והם עדיין בועטים, מחדשים וממצים את כל מה שאני מחפש בז’אנר הזה.

האלבום נפתח עם Pro Victoria האינסטרומנטלי, קטע אפי , משהו שהייתי שומע בסרט סטייל שר הטבעות, הקטע נבנה לאט לאט עם אווירה של טקס שבטי ומתחזק עם סינטים.

Sentinel – אחד הפיבוריטים עלי, קטע חזק, הימנוני ואופייני להרכב (מזכיר את הצלילים של האלבום הקודם).

Tomorrow Never Comes – פעם ראשונה ששמעתי את הקטע, ההתחלה שלו נשמעה לי כמו עוד להקת אינדי שמשתמשת באלקטרוניקה, מפתיע קצת אך מתגלה לנו שיר סינתפופי, קטצ’י ונותן בראש.

The Great Divide – בלדת רוק (יותר סינט’רוק) קיצבית, אפילו קצת מרגשת, סאונד קצת שונה ממה שרגילים לקבל מ-VNV.

Ghost – קטע קצת שקט, לא הולך ממש לאינשהו, חביב לא יותר מזה.

Art of Conflict – קטע נויזי, חזק, EBM במיטבו.

Defiant – כמו The Great Divide מאוד רוקי רק שהוא הרבה יותר שמח ומקפיץ.

Verum Aeternus – אייטיז פופ עם השפעות רוקיסטיות ואווירה שמיימית.

From My Hands – בלדה נוגעת מבוססת פסנתר עם מילים טובות שמקלפת את הקליפה האלקטרונית של VNV ומשאירה אותם חשופים.

Where There is Light – שיר קיצבי ושמח שמציג עתיד בהיר יותר, סגירה טובה לאלבום.

I have a very definite opinion about music. Mainly, that it should make you feel something, anything. This is clearly an opinion shared by the members of VNV Nation; the duo being the Irish born Ronan Harris and Mark Jackson of Great Britian. Together they’ve become the most popular creators of a music genre called “futurepop”. For them, it’s not about the money, the fame, or even the art of creating the music itself; it’s about how that art can make people feel and that’s exactly why they’ve been so successful. It also doesn’t hurt that they make music almost certain to get you moving; losing yourself you feel inspired by the hope that Ronan’s voice and lyrics bring.

Excitement for the show officially hit me when I finally found myself in front of the Nokia Theatre in good ol’ Times Sq. I had seen VNV for the first time almost 2 years ago and that experience had left me hungry for more. The venue was filled with Goths of all shapes, sizes, ethnicities and attire interacting as if they were among family, because that’s just how this band brings people together. We were all eager for the main act but, alas, it was time for what I call the “fluffers” aka the opening acts. First up was Ayria, a Canadian band consisting of Jennifer Parkin (vocals), Mike Wimer (live electric drums), and Jeff M. (live keyboard). They were okay but I felt they could’ve been better. A couple of their songs did manage to get the crowd going though it seemed the rest of their songs were somewhat formulaic in their industrial sound.

Next was War Tapes. Ahh, War Tapes with their slightly 80s rock sound that induces thoughts of driving with the top down, Wayfarers on. Their sound is smooth and I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed what they brought to the stage, especially as it was in preparation for the sort of show the headliner puts on. They’re an LA based band with Neil Popkin on vox and rhythm guitar, Matt Bennett on lead guitar, William Mohler on drums, and Becca Popkin (Neil’s sister) bringing up the rear as bassist. These guys were energetic i.e. all over the place and the crowd loved it. Neil definitely has the front man thing down pat and I was impressed by their overall ease on stage. I’m actually looking forward to seeing around for a long time, curious as to how they’ll grow. Be sure to check out “Always Falling” and “Dreaming of You”.

Anticipation was incredibly high by the time VNV took the stage. Naturally, they had to make a big production of their entrance, inciting us all into a frenzy. This despite the fact that going to a VNV show is more like partying with a few hundred of your closest friends, band members included. This is the North American leg of the “Faith, Power, and Glory” tour and this band isn’t one to entitle an album as such unless they plan to deliver those very things.

They opened with the new track, “Pro Victoria”, and that was the official beginning of a 2 hr. set that Ronan, himself, proclaimed to be the longest on this tour so far. It should be made clear that a VNV show is NOT one for spectators. In fact, it’s strictly verboten. Ronan and Mark will point to a whole section of attendees and demand that they dance/sing because, as they say, “this is YOUR show” which only serves to make each and every fan’s experience different yet unforgettable. Thankfully, the amazing beats of this EBM (electro-body music) make this sort of playful scolding rare.

Performed were the classics from their 10 yr. back-catalog such as “Further”, “Farthest Star”, and “Dark Angel” as well as the necessary few from the new album (“Sentinel” and “In Defiance”). Being as loved a city as we are, Ronan also decided to grace us with a song that had never been performed live but happened to be inspired by our very own Manhattan. The song was “Still Waters” and, even though he joked about being nervous and needing the lyrics in front of him, they still pulled it off with pinache. Certain songs like “Solitary” drove the crowd wild since they hadn’t been done in concert in 5 yrs! As for encores? Well, never let it be said that VNV Nation lets their fans down! Out came Joe Letz of Combichrist to join in on drums for several of these encores including the song “Nemesis”, a guaranteed crowd pleaser. And it was no surprise when the show was stopped mid-way through so that Ronan and Mark could autograph a loyal fan’s vinyl record; in typically humorous VNV style, it was signed with, “Sorry about last night, it’s never happened before”.

A memory made

When it comes down to it, VNV Nation is a band that’s all about love. Love for the music, love for the fans, and love for the interaction between the artists and said fans. I have no doubt that, if all these things were unavailable, they wouldn’t bother doing what they do. So there’s a huge amount of gratitude us fans have for these individuals. After all, we brought the FAITH, through it had POWER, and together…created GLORY.
