A recent Corporate Lunchbox snap poll highlighted growing interest in the Auckland burger scene. While this isn’t the traditional realm of a corporate food blog, the data suggests many white-collar lunch enthusiasts find solace in hamburgers.

It comes as no surprise to this lunch blogger. The current economic conditions continue to drive budget cuts across the board, and shrinking lunch budgets have forced many office workers to look for more cost-effective options.

With this in mind, The Corporate Lunchbox recently visited Wendy’s Old Fashioned Hamburgers to review its lunchtime offering.

Upon arriving at Wendy’s (Dominion Road store) TCL’s review team noted the strategically positioned line labyrinth allowing optimal visibility of the menu while waiting to be served.

Wendy’s had cleverly combined two of my favourite things – hamburgers and the New Zealand Warriors rugby league team - so I ordered the Vodafone Warriors Burger combo.

Service was a bit slow and lifeless, though I’m sure results will vary from store to store.

I was a presented with a pack a Vodafone Warriors trading cards upon receiving the Vodafone Warriors burger, small fries and a small drink (must have been close to 1 litre) - a nice touch.

We’d been told the burger was designed by the Warriors nutritionists and were expecting a king hit of carbs and protein etc. Instead we found the Warriors Burger resembled a plus-sized bacon cheeseburger with avocado and ranch dressing. Luckily, I’m a fan of the bacon cheeseburger so I happily chowed down, enjoying the deliciously fresh salad ingredients synonymous with Wendy’s and the decent sized beef patty.

If you like Wendy’s and consider yourself a Warriors fan, this burger is for you. If neither appeal, you should probably give this one a miss.

The restaurant was surprisingly quiet considering the time we were there, quiet enough that you could potentially hold a lunch meeting. But at risk of sounding elitist, I’d recommend against Wendy’s as a lunch meeting venue.

All in all, it was a positive corporate lunch experience. Wendy’s delivers great value for money, delicious burgers and drinks that are larger than the name suggests.

Overall rating: 5.5/10
