So the article your Television is Ringing discusses how companies are moving more towards convergenc

So the article your Television is Ringing discusses how companies are moving more towards convergence in order to reduce costs by pooling their resources under one brand or name. We have all played the game of Monopoly before (and if you haven’t you should definitely give it a try- but basically you try to acquire as many properties so that you can eventually charge more when other players land on them. The players have no choice later but to pay you the higher price regardless of what the services cost previously.

Do Customers really want Convergonolopy?

What is interesting though when these companies are combining their services to make bundled plans is that they assume that customers want all these services: land line, cable TV, cell phone, and internet. For me though, with the added internet capabilities of watching content online, and being able to call people via skype, I am moving away as a consumer from landlines and cable TV. These bundle deals are just a dying attempt by landline companies to retain their customers who move to mobile cell phones. The future is internet and cell phones – or just cell phones if Wifi is everywhere. The only way I would buy a bundle deal is if it was the equivalent to what I would spend on my cell phone and internet.

Who will Succeed?

The companies which are hesitant to cushion the fall of the landline and cable companies by joining forces are the ones that will survive. The article mentioned specifically that Vodaphone was hesitant if not resistant to the joining of forces. Internet providers and cell phone provides will sell the new innovations that people can’t wait to have, not just the old technologies that are sold to them in a bundle.

I am not arguing that convergence should never happen. I have enjoyed bundled plans in the past. But for the future – the companies that will be more successful are the ones that stand apart and introduce new innovations, and not cling onto the past. The companies that retain control of pricing for their customers and enable highest choice of products while still keeping the price levels down. Basically, good companies will not only converge but will also diverge to maintain their autonomy and individuality in their brand in order to do things different for the customers sake – not just their own.

Inevitability

The game of “convergonopoly” can be brutal for the consumers. Even though right now they claim that their prices are cheaper by getting a bundle. Consumers soon will not need the “extra” services they offer. Vodaphone knows this…hopefully others will observe this inevitablity as well.

Questions:

1) What companies do you think are most successful at converging? There are obvious gains but what do companies lose when they converge?

2) What companies other than Vodaphone would you assume would be more autonomous (perhaps divergent) paths in the future? Why?

A few time a year I travel to London, England for business. Each time I have just paid the daily in

A few time a year I travel to London, England for business. Each time I have just paid the daily internet usage fee at the hotel (usually Le Meridien at Piccadilly Circus) but the costs have gone up recently. At 20 GBP per day my one week visit was going to cost me 140 GBP so I decided there had to be a better way.

I went over to carphone warehouse and checked out all their internet stick options. While they all seemed like good and less expensive options there was a huge factor that led me to pick the Vodaphone internet stick. THEY’RE ACCOUNTS NEVER EXPIRE! All the others there would not only have their pay-as-you-go data expire over time but the account itself would expire after as much as 90 days of inactivity.

So for 34.99 GBP I got a Vodaphone stick pre-loaded with 1Gb of data. Vodaphone is the most expensive of the bunch at 15 GBP per 1Gb but since I wont have to re-activate my account and the unused data will always be available on a return trip I figure the extra cost is worth it.

As I had been advised the speeds were not lightning fast. It would be no good for watching youtube videos or uploading and downloading large files but for my day to day emails and source code editing it was perfect. It also worked everywhere, in my hotel room, in coffee shops, and even in the Heathrow express on my way back to the airport.

At the end of my week I had still not completely used up my complimentary 1Gb of data and I am happy to know it will be there waiting for me when I return to the UK next.

For my next cost saving trick I would like to find out if I can activate this same stick to work in other countries by purchasing a Vodaphone account in Switzerland, and India. The connection software makes it look like this is, or will one day, be possible. If anyone has experience with this please let me know in the comments.

La canción por cierto está producida por Rodney Jerkins, responsable de iconos del calibre de If you had my love, It’s not right but it’s ok, Say my name y Holler.

When we first saw Vodaphone’s ringtone commercial where 1000 cell phones perform a section of the William Tell overture, we just assumed it was some slick video editing, not to be taken seriously. Apparently, we were wrong. They actually did this. They actually sent text messages to all the phones in correct timing to play the music. In the video after the break, you can see some details on how they pulled it off. They had to perform this during non peak usage hours to ensure that all their texts went through. We think this project is pretty impressive. Actually, we still don’t know how they pulled it off, we can’t seem to predict how long a text message will take to reach its destination with any kind of reproducible accuracy.

Hold on to your jail-broken iPhones…or don’t. RIM, the company that introduced crackber- er I mean Blackberry to the world is about to drop another bomb on the smartphone scene.

The new Blackberry Storm 2 9550 (don’t get confused with the 9520 for Vodaphone…) has been a highly anticipated phone even just after the 1st gen Storm came out. Because the Blackberry phones have always had physical keyboards and none of them were touch up until the Storm was released, it was expected that there would be some issues with the new technology. For most people, the phone was a lag bucket (yes I said lag bucket.) Now there have been a couple of firmware updates that have been said to make the Storm bearable until it’s upgrade time for the Storm 2. With the addition of WiFi to the Storm 2, I would imagine there are going to be more people paying the full price to get the new phone.

Most of the annoying issues that consumers were not enjoying about there phone were, but not limited to the SurePress technology for the touch screen (where you touch the screen to select and then push down on the screen to activate something), lack of WiFi, battery life, and just all around prettiness. Even the battery life has improved greatly, 5+ hours of talk time and 10+ days of standby. I could certainly deal with that.

The Storm is currently still running on the 4.7 software for Blackberry but once the Storm 2 comes out, 5.0 should be out and accordingly, when this is applied to the Storm it should fix most problems with software issues on the phone. Just long enough to wait for upgrade time I suppose…

Will this new venture for Blackberry be the iPhone killer? Will the masses stampede all Verizon stores, waiting for days in line just to get there hands on a new crackberry? Most likely not, I still stand by the fact that if iPhone moves to Verizon, I will have one. I am pretty sure that there are many other people out there that have the same sentiments as myself. Until then, I am still oogling the new Blackberry Storm 2.
