Sure enough I immediately updated all apps without considering the possibility of losing some important files I had stored. Well it happened as whilst updating my voicerecorder app, I lost important recordings as a result. iTunes seemed to get stuck whilst updating and was confused whether the installation was ‘over the air’ or through iTunes sync. All other updates worked and updated themselves (apart from 2 apps which still showed up as needing to be updated when in fact I had already done so – a common problem apparently).

I read that other users have come across this problem. For instance, whilst updating the addictive ENIGMO game, many users lost their saved game after updating.

I consulted the developer of voicerecorder who hadn’t yet come across this issue with his App and unfortunately was not in a position to help as iTunes is the cause of this. iTunes deleted the whole App and reinstalled it without backing up old files.

I hope that iTunes include a Back up feature of such files. It is frustrating that itunes does not have a saved files feature .doc, .ppt, .pdf etc inwhich a user is able to have a stored location which s/he can refer to when needed.

Well I look forward to the new release of Voice Recorder Version 2.0 out soon which will have the ftp feature which allows file transfering to Mac/PC.

If anyone else has encountered such Update issues, let us know.

With wiretapping in the news these days, a banally useful tip on tech gear that every aesthete, reporter, sleuth, paranoic, or alimony seeking spouse should know about. Mark Frauenfelder of BoingBoing reports: A friend of mine, a journalist, recently emailed to tell me he likes the Olympus WS-110 digital voice recorder I recently recommended. He said:

I just wanted to thank you for guiding me to try the Olympus WS-110 digital voice recorder for interviews, using ffmpegx to convert the audio to MP3, and then Listen&Type to transcribe. I’ve been using all three for a couple of weeks now, and have been very happy with the results. The recorder in particular has been great: tiny in size, it holds more hours of audio than I could ever need, and has been able to clearly record both sides of an interview.

Being able to store interviews on my computer as MP3 files is also a great benefit.

A few days ago, I bought a very useful accessory for the WS-110: The Olympus TP-7 Telephone Recording Device. You simply stick it in your ear, and make the phone call. It does a great job of recording both ends of a conversation. It will work with any recorder, not just the WS-110. It also comes with various jack adaptors. Olympus TP-7 Telephone Recording Device.
