This is Part two of the discussion begun in the article below about Climate Scientists, SAC and the

This is Part two of the discussion begun in the article below about Climate Scientists, SAC and the MVO. We welcome a frank discussion on the topic of Scientists not sharing data and their failure to communicate their methods and the formulas used to reach various conclusions.

To review: the previous discussion came about because of the illegal hacking of the University of East Anglia’s computers. This University is also associated with the MVO (Montserrat Volcano Observatory, on Montserrat a Caribbean, West Indies island, which is also a dependent Territory of the UK.) The SAC is the Scientific Advisory Committee (on the Volcano) to the Governments — both of the Colony and the Governor who is the representative of the Queen of England in the Colony.

A bit more background to the parallels to what is being called “ClimateGate” and the 2007 SAC modeling fiasco from the previous article. At no time were the SAC email hacked, nor were documents stolen from a University — this is one place where there is no parallel. This writer and those responding to the article were reacting to some modeling software used by SAC in 2007 to “predict” an event. Absolutely no technical data or formulas was shared with the citizens of Montserrat to support their prediction. (Voodoo — shamans say it so it must be true.)

This modeling software can be thought of as a computer game — there are different outcomes depending on the choices of the players. In this case the players were SAC members and they apparently only presented ONE end game in cartoon form. No other models were released — and it is unknown how much “tweaking” had to take place to end up with the RED showing a large area hit by a LATERAL blast from the volcano. And the scientist wonder why a whole lot of people are questioning any scientific findings. The behavior of the SAC and MVO isn’t unique or limited to Montserrat — in fact it seems to be found in many branches of Science.

So when ClimateGate hit the news many of us who lived through the 07 SAC-MVO modeling Voodoo fiasco responded — where have we heard this story before. FUNNY that we know the University of East Anglia — because this is where a lot of the staff of the MVO comes from. There is a culture of scientific aloofness and arrogance — and it showed up in the hacked email and documents.

Another parallel we is with the withholding of data can be found in the SAC’s periodic reports which assigns probability numbers to events which in their opinion might happen. NEVER have they revealed the formulas they use to come up with these probability guesses. It is doubtful that these SAC reports would pass any sort of peer reviews from neutral referees. Until the data used for these predictions is released these predictive reports about the . . . Climate of the Volcano . . . are no more than Voodoo by the Volcano Shamans.

What we saw in Montserrat in the Winter of 07 was that “Scientific” modeling or computer games gone rouge can be used as a tool to intimidate a population. That model was based on several false and misleading assumptions (theories) relating to a mythical lateral blast. Mythical because at the time the volcano was releaving pressure. There was no pressure cooker effect with the weakest point being a lateral release. The SAC and MVO (under the OLD management) refused to listen to any alternative and faced with a Governor who had NO scientific training and the rest of the officials unwilling to trust their own common sense — they got to play voodoo shamans.

SO — now the University of East Anglia is in the news and NOW the world is wondering where these scientists got their computer modeling software. There are valid questions and neutral third party software engineers are looking at the software used for CLIMATE modeling. At this point the discussion gets very geeky — which is why the data and software must be examined. Sometimes scientists are just too close to their research — they may not be able to see or consider other options and other variables.

Video and link with details of the Climate modeling software:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/programmes/newsnight/8395514.stm

One of the “automatically generated” related topics in fact explains Climate modeling forecasts. What is also interesting are the comments following the article. At this point we are hearing from individuals who are going to disbelieve anything that any scientist says or writes. Some people want to believe that humans have had zero impact on the climate and the environment. Common sense and close observation of the world around us shows us that humans do have an impact on the environment. The computer models used to predict what the earths future climate needs to be reviewed carefully. We are all being asked to believe scientists unquestioningly. Our response is — but first show us the data and let other scientists from other disciplines review the data, software and formulas used to reach conclusions about the climate of the future. Everyone who reviews the data must first reveal their personal biases and where their funding comes from.

Technical Geek-speak on Climate modeling can be found here.

Here’s an insightful comment from James Bain posted on 5 Dec 09.

These concerns are not new. Before Wolfe Kreps left the island, he and I had pointed out in the Montserrat Reporter essentially the same issues concerning transparency and validity of data and method.

The fundamental problem here is that, despite protestations from the MVO community, we are not talking about “pure science” for the purpose of generally expanding our knowledge and undertanding of the nature of volcanoes, but rather the very pragmantic issue of predicting a potential catastrophe. The MVO has been placed in the unfortunate position of attempting to be a fortune teller, and they are understandably not very good at it.

Let’s face it, whoever is on watch if a catastrophic event happens would likely have their career ruined if they hadn’t “warned” us. There is no way they cannot be biased, and perhaps rightfully so. What is discouraging from my point of view is that SAC fails to acknowledge these limitations and provide a transparency to the process such that there can be a legitimate frank discussion of what we do indeed know and what we don’t in order to make decisions concerning the welfare of the island.

Even more unfortunate is the fact that the past political leadership of the island, including the governors, have been more than willing to manipulate the role of the MVO, using it as a shield to hide behind when decisions need to be made. How many times have we heard “we must do this or that because the scientists say we have to”? The best that the scientists can do is make very crude predictions about the probabilities of certain events occurring. The decision about what to do with that data is a political one. I have some confidence that the new local administration seems much less likely to behave in this irresponsible manner; whether the Governor becomes so enlightened remains to be seen.

As a physician, I often have to make complex decisions, sometimes of great gravity, based on incomplete data. I have found that it to be extremely useful to be very careful to honestly distinguish in my own mind, and in the mind of the patient and family, what we know for sure, what we think we know, what we believe and what we actually don’t know. A similar clarity of thought and process from the scientific and political community involved in evaluating the volcano on Montserrat and its potential actions would be a vast improvement.

This is a small write-up about December 21st, 2012 compiled by me after going through numerous websites. You have probably heard about the famous Mayan Long Calendar that is set to end its final baktun (cycle) on December 21st, 2012. This end has caused many to sit up and take notice because they are uncertain of what it signifies. The Mayan calendar 2012 deadline is one that has gripped the imagination of everyone from researchers of the Mayan culture. There are a plethora of clues, but putting the pieces together is something that can be quite difficult. This is another reason why there has been so much speculation about the event that will take place on that day. One theory that has been put forth is that this date signifies a rare alignment of the Milky Way galaxy that only occurs once every twenty five thousand years. Some researchers believe that this rare alignment is something that could cause a shift of the magnetic poles.

Based on the calendars of the great Mesoamerican civilizations, known as being the most precise on Earth, we are only 3 years away from the end of the world 2012. These great astrologists, the Mayans, have discovered 3 thousand years ago, that the Earth’s Axe oscillates and changes its position every 26 thousand years and as a result the positions of the neighboring stars change all the time. Even as we speak, we are approaching the end of this big cycle, which in the eyes of the Mayan civilization coincides with the end of the world predicted for December 2012.

Solar Flairs Peak

In general, solar storms have been entering the earth with lots of radiation energy, thereby knocking the power grids as well as destroying satellites. This particular activity is predicted to get even worse and this problem will reach its top on December 21 2012.

Volcano Catastrophe

Volcanic eruptions are predicted to be the major natural disaster that will end the life on Earth. The Yellowstone volcano is said to have an erupting pattern for every 650,000 years. The pressure under this volcano is building continuously. Many geologists foresee that this volcano is ready for a massive bang in the 2012 end of the world.

Scientist’s Calculations

According to the calculations made by expert scientists, it is anticipated that the Earth will face major destruction in 2012 end of the world. To make the matter even worse, their predictions tells that all human beings will die very shortly with 99% certainty.

An even weirder thing is that in the magnetic field of the Earth have been reported holes similar to ozone holes. It seems that the magnetic poles will soon reverse and this will affect our planet’s capacity to defend against heavy objects that will attack us in the future. The planetary alignment could lead to a huge solar storm.

Also scientists think that the solar system has just entered in an interstellar node with a very powerful energy and electromagnetic activity. The entire solar system is reacting, trying to adapt to the new situation.

They also say that the climax will be in 2012 end of the world!

If the collision will be violent, the electromagnetic activity will unleash a huge quantity of energy in our direction. Comets and asteroids could suffer oscillations in their orbits and the risk of collisions will increase.

What will really happen? Is the “end of the world 2012″ Is the prophecy really true? We don’t know for sure because the facts are a little ambiguous, we’ll just have to wait and see.

With a slight twist today, it’s today’s news instead of tomorrow, because there’s a few things I wanted to make sure to log…

First, in Somalia a suicide bombing killed 19 including three government ministers. The attack came during a graduation celebration for graduating Benadir University students who are hoping to be the next generation of doctors, much needed in the war torn country.

Troubling and confusing news of more unrest from Guinea via BBC News and Al Jazeera. Military leader Capt Moussa Dadis Camara, who’s been in power for a year since a successful coup, is said to be “doing well” and “out of danger” after being fired on and wounded by his own troops. The incident comes amidst calls by Human Rights Watch for Camara to release activist Mouctar Diallo.

Also, social media means connecting to anyone, anywhere – and sometimes, not in the way you expected. The Wall Street Journal describes how Iran is experimenting with new ways of using Facebook in Iranian Crackdown Goes Global. They say you never know who’s reading what you put online…

Finally, this New Zealand Herald article, Vanuatu: Lava’s in the air reminded me of this October post, also featuring Vanuatu. John McCrystal introduces us to Yasur, the volcanic “lighthouse of the Mediterranean,” on a daylong excursion

thank you to Jonathan Caras for the wonderful blog post and the great pictures, and thank you to Sarah for being so pretty.

Anna Ticho House

by Jonathan Caras

Since the birth of our daughter 10 months ago, my wife and I have made the extra effort to find time to spend a night out on the town whenever possible. The partially lit corner of a cute restaurant is about the best choice to get away from the heck-tick run around of our day to day lives.

My wife and I have always been fans of the Ticho House. We have recommended this restaurant to friends on a number of occasions, frequenting the restaurant with our friends and relatives for lunch or dinner. Since the last time we visited this restaurant, the Ticho House upped it Kosher status from Rabbinute (regular) to Mehadrin (vente). This was very exciting for us because we as a family also started eating only at Mehadrin Restaurants.

When we arrived at the restaurant, with no reservation, we were surprised how packed the place was for a Monday night. A waiter promptly sat us at a table for two and left us to rummage through the menu.

I am a sucker for fettuccine Alfredo, it gets me every time. I cant remember the last time I went to an Italian restaurant and didn’t order the dish. Sure enough after looking the menu up and down we decided to order two appetizers and a plate of Fettuccine Alfredo.

The appetizers came lightning fast, the first being a dish of wild mushrooms. If you are a mushroom fan this dish alone is worth visiting the Ticho house. Lightly sautéed wild mushrooms come seated on a giant crunchy fried dome shaped object, not unlike the potato chip “Munchos.” The mushrooms amazingly all had their own unique flavor while at the same time blending excellently in with the sauce. The dome shaped object was fun to break apart and use to scoop up the last remaining mushrooms on the dish.

The second appetizer did not measure up as well against the amazing quality of the mushroom dish. We ordered a plate of stuffed artichokes, a dish I can remember my mother making in my home growing up. It may have been a case of unrealistic expectations but the hearts tasted dry and the stuffing lacked any kick that would make me say “wow, you have to try this!” We both agreed the dish needed some kind of sauce and a little pick me up in the presentation department. I cant say I didn’t enjoy the dish, but by the time I had salted it enough to taste some real flavor, I was in fact simply tasting salt.

The service at this point continued to surprise us. Despite how crowded the restaurant was, our waitress (can we still call them that, or is there some new PC term I don’t know about?) stopped by our table to check in on us just about every time she passed by the table.

At this point my heart broke. The pasta was brought out and a simple glance told us they had skimped out on the cheese. The noodles were cooked to perfection, but that was about all there was in the bowl. I felt like I had been served fettuccine noodles in warm milk. The most disappointing part of the story is that i am no stranger to the Ticho house’s Alfredo dishes. In the past it had always been creamy with that extra sauce left over for the much enjoyed bread dipping. We finished our meal talking nostalgically about how this pasta dish used to be served at this respectable establishment.

We still had some room left to fill after the disappointing pasta, so we asked for the desert menu. Glancing around the restaurant we spotted a few cakes and other deserts that looked to die for. My wife was in the mood for chocolate on chocolate so we ordered a volcano, and a decaf mocha-chino. This is a dish just about every restaurant has on its menu, and rightly so. Its hard to mess up chocolate cake with a hot chocolate sauce within, and the Ticho house did an excellent job. Desert was served quickly and hot, and there was no shortage of whipped cream on the coffee.

All in all it was a mixed experience at the Ticho House. We are defiantly looking forward to visiting again but next time we may end up sticking with the fish dish.

the Anna Ticho house is a museum located in one of the first houses in Jerusalem built outside the old city at the end of the nineteenth century. The museum portrays life in Jerusalem in the beginning of the 20th Century. The Ticho house is located in the center of town where the famous artist living and worked. To learn more about this beautiful and charming restaurant / museum visit

It’s been a pretty glum week weather wise here… quite rainy, but can’t complain as it is still 20 degrees C give or take. My rainy day treat on Monday was a visit to Auckland Museum. I’ve been wanting to go there for a while afterI read that they had loads of insects and stuff there. True enough, bugs galore, living and dead! And I got to see a new island formed, in the volcano simulation room – where you could look out of your sea view window and see an eruption in the sea and then be buried in a cloud of ash (pyroclastic flow no less).

Monday night was off to bouncing on big trampolines with Katie – quite exciting and a wee bit scary. I think it is another one of those things, like abseiling, that I will definitely have to try again. Although I wasn’t somersaulting by the end of it, I did pick up a few good moves. Monday night was super warm and 100% humidity though, and it was flippin hard work!

So on Tuesday I’m travelling back through the city and thought what-the-hey let’s check out that volcano close up! So booked myself on a hop-on hop-off harbour cruise and away I went to Rangitoto Island, probably the most photographed bit of Auckland after the Sky Tower. Sadly the trip to the summit was fully booked, but when I got off the boat most people headed one way so I decided to take the other path. It was fantastic there. I can see why people live in and around volcanoes… just a great if weird atmosphere, loads of unusual plants, lots of lovely lava formations… mmmm nice. There are quite a few abandoned holiday homes on the island – very eery. Got lava dust in my shoes! Sadly the rain set in. The plan was to hop back on the boat and hop off at the next island – Motuihe Island – and spend a couple of hours lounging on the beach and paddling at the water’s edge. But the rain made this a very wet option. Irritatingly though, back in Mount Eden it was glorious sunshine! Perfect setting for strawberries and pink wine… I can assure you it was lurrvelly!

Rainy again today… still it didn’t dissuade me from taking a ride on my bike, which has the tyre pumped up at last. Worked on my masters degree for a few hours this morning… West Nile Virus… how exciting (not). And the rain has not let up, so full moon fire dancing and drumming on the reserve round the corner was off – I was really really looking forward to that too! Oh well, maybe they have a rain day…?

Visa, where for art though visa?

Wherever you stand in Bali in the morning, you can spot the magnificent 3154m high Gunung Agung volcano. It is not only a volcano that last erupted in 1963 it is also a holy place where all spirit of Balinese Ancestors dwell. This mountain is also of great significance in the Indus religion. I have been watching this mountain for the last 5 weeks, waiting for a perfect day and some people who would attempt the climb without guide with me. I finally find 2 Yoga friends, Steven and Rebecca that are willing to wake up at 04:30. We drive at the foot of the mountain (1500m) and from there start the 1600m climb. It is a 4km, 40% straight-shot without switchbacks. The first part, up to 1800m is very lush. The second part until 2400m is mostly pine trees and other conifers. The last part reminded me strongly of Lanzarote: a bare, black, rocky landscape. The last meters are a bit more difficult but the reward at the top is great. A beautiful large crater of ochre and reddish rocks. At the bottom a few pools with muddy water. It is 10:30. We are at the top with a great feeling of satisfaction. The air is fresh & crisp. A welcome change from the constant high humidity back down in Ubud .

The climb was in many ways rewarding. Yes there was this beautiful crater, but it was also a fantastic day to spend with friends, talking about nothing and everything. Last but not least a great fitness training to strengthen my knee and although going down was taxing for the knees, it felt good to know that it can hold again this type of effort. Another 3 weeks and I will be able to start running again!!!

I look every morning at Gunung Agung from our veranda in Ubud. It is not an objective anymore, it has become part of my world, a kind of acquaintance. I am quite sure everyone feels this way with mountains. Once you have been on top of it you look at it differently, knowing the price and the reward.

(The Gunung Agung Pic is not my own)

These things take forever to type out, so heres the beginning for now: Introduction: Holy friggin’ c

These things take forever to type out, so heres the beginning for now:

Introduction:

Holy friggin’ crap! It’s Whoopi time again bitches and we’re going to whoop it up! (Pun completely intended) If I were to compare my mystical journey to the Louis and Clark expedition again I’d say we’re about to enter Sioux territory. Yes, unfamiliar territory, but the unknown must be discovered, and I must continue! My Sacagawea Indian Native American Tonto lady, also known as Netflix, is pregnant…pregnant with Whoopi movies for me to deliver commentary to you! (This pun is also very much intended) Today’s viewing is “Eddie.” I have no idea what this movie is, but the poster shows Whoopi with basketball, which, as you know, Whoopi and basketball go together like vinegar and baking soda. This means this movie is going to EXPLODE with excitement like a volcano at a 5th grade science fair! (Pun 3, completely on a roll, don’t stop me now) Now, let the summary from Netflix with thrown in commentary commence!

Eddie, Whoopi Goldberg, channels her late husband’s passion for basketball by coaching inner-city kids (is there such a thing as an outer-city kid?) and cheering the New York Knicks, who are plagued by a losing streak (Doesn’t sound too fictional).

Yeah, That's Dennis Rodman

In a quirky twist (A TWIST!? I thought M. Night Shyamalan was legally the only one allowed touse twists!), Eddie becomes the Knicks’ new coach and promptly whips them into shape (Literally with a whip, until Moses was all like “Let my people go!”) Guest appearances by few National Basketball Association (That’s what NBA stands for apparently) players, including Dennis Rodman (No need to insert a stupid joke after that), John Salley, Malik Sealy and Spud Webb, make this sports comedy a slam-dunk. (Seems Netflix beat me at my pun game, touché Netflix, touché)

Prediction:
Well obviously Whoopi’s husband dies. Then she starts coaching basketball for under privileged kids, aka poor kids. Her husband is going to visit her in spirit, most likely give her tips, and the occasional high five. Then what happens? The kids turn into basketball geniuses, because they all learn to work as a team, plus when they’re going in for a basket they all form what they call the “Flying V,” which is kind of like a formation birds make when they fly south for the winter, only much sportier. Then Whoopi is going to completely ditch the poor kids saying, “I’m going pro bitches!” Then she’s going to coach the New York Knicks, and they’re going to win the Super Bowl. Yeah, that’s right, basketball players winning the Super Bowl, put that in your VCR and play it! Ok, I was trying to come up with something like, “Put that in your pipe and smoke it,” but really didn’t pull it off too well. This prediction is retarded. OK, so it’s going to be a mix of the Mighty Ducks, and Angels In The Outfield, except with poor kids and Dennis Rodman.

Where: Taco Bell What: A Cheesy Gordita using a Blackjack or Volcano hard tortilla shell with Blackj

Where: Taco Bell
What: A Cheesy Gordita using a Blackjack or Volcano hard tortilla shell with Blackjack sauce, nacho sauce & Lava sauce
Cost: $1.90
Success: No

Here at Eating the Road we’ve got a new feature called Will They Build It? We will attempt to have the workers at various fast food establishments build whatever concoctions we can come up with in our sick twisted minds (we’re also open to any suggestions readers might have). There are not any steadfast rules but it must be “off the menu”, price is not a consideration (we know in some cases they may be extremely ridiculous) and going into the restaurant we must have the item in mind and not try to tweak it at the counter. We really want to see if they can and will make strange item requests.

The first foray was to Taco Bell for the Nacho Cheesy Blackjack Volcano Gordita Crunch. The new Cheesy Gordita Crunch is a hard taco layered with melted cheese and a soft Gordita. It is a very reasonable $.89 but it needs a little boast. In step the Blackjack and Volcano tacos. The Volcano taco is your standard taco but with a red shell and Lava sauce. The Blackjack taco is a standard taco with a black shell and Blackjack sauce (which apparently is just Baja sauce but I’ve also been told it’s a Pepperjack sauce depending on which Taco Bell you’re at).

I placed my order and the cashier stared blankly at me for a second and paused. She put up her index finger, told me to “Wait a sec,” walked back to her co-worker and said, I’m not joking, “We’ve got a creator here.” They talked it over a bit and figured they would try their best.

Unfortunately they no longer had either of the red or black taco shells. What the end product came out as was a Gordita tortilla, melted cheddar, a regular hard taco shell, beef, lettuce, tomatoes, cheddar cheese, pepperjack cheese, Lava Sauce, nacho cheese and Baja sauce.

It was quite close but not what we had in mind. We have failed in our first attempt at Will They Build It? Pricewise it was extremely cheap considering. She only charged me for one addition and it rang in at under $2 for quite a hefty item. With a little Fire sauce as well it actually wasn’t too bad, although I bet it clocks in at around 600 calories.

Hey Penguins!

I was on Club Penguin continuing my journey of Card-Jitsu Fire and Guess What!

The Secret Hideout and Dojo Courtyard decorations are gone!

Check it out!

I noticed that the Secret Hideout is back to its construction button, not with NEW GAME on it.

Also…

Odd… I hope Club Penguin fixes this soon…

Mount Edgecumbe is a dormant volcano near Sitka, Alaska, which was the subject of an April Fool’s Day hoax.

The volcano hasn’t erupted in almost 4,000 years, but in 1974 prankster Porky Bickar flew hundreds of tires into the crater and lit them on fire, tricking locals into thinking that the volcano was active again.

The Museum of Hoaxes reports:

Six years later when Mount St. Helens erupted a Sitka resident wrote to Bickar to tell him, “This time you’ve gone too far!”
