Tripp Lite SU6000RT3UHV Smart Online Rack/Tower PureSine High Voltage Uninterruptible Power Supply (6000VA, 200-240V Hardwired, 6U) Overview

Tripp Lite Smart Online SU6000RT3UHV on-line, double conversion UPS protects server, networking or telecommunications equipment from blackouts, voltage fluctuations and surges in a compact tower/rackmount housing. In rack configuration, power module and battery pack occupy only 3 rack spaces each (6U total). Upright tower placement of entire system supported with included tower stands. Large capacity 6000VA/4200 watt power module converts raw input AC to DC, and then back to perfect sine wave AC output within 2% of user-selectable 200/208/220/230/240V AC output voltages. Frequency regulation locks output power to 50/60Hz (+/-0.2 Hz), removing harmonic distortion, fast electrical impulses and other hard-to-solve power problems not addressed by other UPS types. Perfectly regulated, continuous sine wave output with zero transfer time offers guaranteed compatibility with all equipment types. Hardwire input and output connections support a variety of permanent or PDU style power connections. Battery support can be extended through the addition of external battery packs. Includes slot for internal SNMP/web card, plus DB9 enhanced serial monitoring port for unattended shutdown, remote control and monitoring of UPS system and power data.

I was very, very disappointed with Dot Rottens latest release “R.I.P Young Dot”. After h

I was very, very disappointed with Dot Rottens latest release “R.I.P Young Dot”. After his first mixtape, and his excellent work on the O.G’s mixtape “O.G season” this was a terrible let down. Although i never really rated Dot as one of the top mc’s (he’s at times been a bit to monotonous for my taste) i did rate him as one of the top producers. “R.I.P Young Dot” was the sound of Dot totally loosing it. No it wasn’t one of the worst grime mixtapes made, far from, but it was a frustrating and boring failure. And after that most of what i heard from Dot, on various youtube vids, was him continuing the very odd theme he started on with “I’m a leader”, some sort of melancholy autotune gone berserk.

For these reasons i didn’t have too high expectations on the release of S.O.O.N. I was really just hoping Dot wouldn’t have gone further down a strange route of undistinguished run-of-the-mill tracks with some autotune singing in the chorus. Fortunately it seems Dot has gotten his head if not completely at least partly back in the game. It’s obvious already on the first track “Mr baker/Crazy Comments” (after having to listen to a rather annoying attempt at humor from “Mr baker”) that Dot has highly improved his mc skills, both lyrically and flow wise. Here he comes like a grime Eminem, high pitched, fast spitting, fast rhyming, wisecracking. But als0 in more conventional grime mode he’s flow is vastly improved and convey far more emotion than on earlier works, even without crying out in a burst of auto-tune.

But most importantly Dot seem to have recovered his skills as a producer. At times this mixtape burns with creative skill, on more melancholy tracks like “The days”, “Best of me” and “No one knows”, ferocious tracks like “Show me respect” and “Talking the hardest” or simply, in grime terms, refreshingly original tracks like “Two step non step”, and “I’m not stopping”. At best Dot has a imaginative gifted touch, a innovative and unique style so desperately needed in todays grime.

Some thing are not as good. While in general being ok, moody tracks “I’m a professional” and “The days” makes me cringe, or occasionally makes me giggle to myself when Dot goes in hard with the autotune singing. It really does sound ridiculous. On “Best of me” i totally loose it, it’s just too fucking weird. Also the guest are not up to the quality of the members of O’G’s he used to spar with, but are mostly pretty colorless. Only exceptions are Ice Kid, who has two great chilling verses and Voltage, who does well on his own on great bonustrack “No one knows”.

However, this is not a album, but apparently the mixtape before next mixtape, or the album, that will or will not arrive any day now, which may explain a few odd choices. First of all, 22 tracks is too many. 22 tracks is proof you don’t have proper quality control. Theres no reason to have that many tracks. I’d say 15 tracks maximum, give the others away on compilations or as free downloads or whatever. Also most of the tracks not produced by Dot feels out of place and hurt the consistency of the mixtape, none of the Faith SFX tracks are particularly good, Terror Danjahs “Ride for me” is a quite boring commercial lovesong, only “Theres more to life” over Dizzee Rascals “Brand new Day” really feel at place. There are also some tracks i don’t see any point at all having on here. Brutal’s “Cheating” is hideous, so is “Sex time” with Griminal and Brutal. Please someone explain to me why i would want to hear about other men fucking.

With half the number of tunes i might have considered this a grime classic. It contains at least six or seven tracks i will hold as among the best of 2009. This is the sound of a artist, a artist who’s found his way home, still perhaps on shaky legs, but with perhaps more promise than anyone i can see in the scene at the moment. I just keep my fingers crossed and hope that he will stay clear of the autotune and the dreadful lovesongs.

I had no expectations when i downloaded this, literally no expectations. Voltage has never impressed

I had no expectations when i downloaded this, literally no expectations. Voltage has never impressed me very much, Maxstas quite new, and Nutcase i have never heard anything of. Having no expectations is usually a good thing i have noticed before, this is true in this case as well, as this was a quite welcome discovery. I am actually quite surprised by the levels shown. All three of them flow good, confident, and the different styles play well of each other. Most importantly there is never anything that really annoys me, theres nothing that is really awfully bad. It is all well done, well crafted, far more professional than i had expected. This may not seem like a very positive critique, but in the world of free grime mixtapes it certainly is.

Some tracks are, for my taste, a bit to commercial in tone. Some are not quite grimey enough for my taste. And some tracks do not concern subjects that really interest me, some talk about girls and, some talk about earning money. Some tracks just go by without any real substance to make me notice them. Still there are more than enough good tracks to make me quite happy. “Stars in the scene allstar” featuring Realist and Scruface by Rude Kid is a great track, once again Rude Kid shows what levels he can reach when he wants to. The same is true about the other possetrack “Make your way through the exit” featuring Krept and Konan, produced by Dreama. Voltage does well on his solo, on tracks by Maniac and Skepta, Maxsta on his own on a track by Flava D, though i’m not that fond of the chorus.

There is talent here. I wouldn’t go so far as to call it certified, i would say that the three of them are at a crossroads where thay have the possibilty to go on and make great grime. Or go the other path and make bait hiphop and swag swagger music. But they have certainly proved there is promise.

To many visions, to many illusions, to many opinions, to many confusions brought by my own idealism founded trough mechanism or dualism. To many voices of choices invading my mind of emotion in this blistering storm of synapsonical devotions. To many hopes crumbling down in rustling noises. To many measures turning into high voltage pressure. Growing like hungry herds of swirling words making my head spin around, 400 miles a hour. Devour my thoughts of childhood innocence. To many questions is the essence of the mind blowing violence. To many guidance, to many transience which defines my actions. And all these words make it worse of course. To many ideas, to many wishes, to many bridges to cross. I nearly feel lost and then it’s happening. My mind is pitching, twitching…twitches……twitch….switch to total meltdown…………………………

Well, my head is clear now. That’s the positive thing about having a total meltdown.

Late this summer, the International Tactical Rifleman’s Championship (ITRC) was held in Gillette, Wyoming at the Surefire Training Facility run by Dave Lauck. Team Hornady shooters Bennie Cooley and Michael Voigt captured their sixth ITRC win, besting 27 other teams, including Special Forces, law enforcement, and military personnel.

The match is a grueling three-day event held for teams of two marksmen. The event challenges each two-man team with multiple scenarios involving pistol targets to 50 yards, carbine targets to 500 yards, and precision rifle targets to 1,000 yards. One partner ranges and calls shots while the other shoots, with roles interchanged during the stages. Typically, the long-range rifle targets are at “unknown” distances, requiring ranging skills and excellent communication between spotter and shooter.

This year, the long-range field courses involved pistol, carbine, and rifle targets. First one or both team members engaged pistol targets out to 50 yards. Then, one shooter engaged the medium range (0-500 yards) carbine targets. Next his partner shot bolt-action rifle at targets from 0-1000 yards. In addition to the long-range stages, this year’s IRTC included a shorter-range (Gully) pistol + rifle event, a “Scramble” event for carbines with targets out to 550 yards, a timed Team vs. Team event, plus a 500-yard ‘Egg Shoot’ for bolt rifle.

Zak Smith of Thunder Beast Arms, who has competed at the ITRC, explains: “The D&L Sports Int’l Tactical Rifleman Championships (ITRC) is a 3-Gun match unlike conventional 3-Gun matches. The ITRC has field courses from 1 to 2.5 miles long which must be finished in times from 45 minutes to two hours by teams of two: a bolt rifle shooter, and a carbine shooter”.

All ITRC courses of fire demand movement from the team across varied rugged terrain and even obstacle courses. ITRC matches typically offer “shoot while moving” stages, which can include shooting from a raft on a lake, shooting from a helicopter in flight, or shooting from the back of a moving Humvee. Overall, the ITRC is a very challenging event that places exceptional demands on both equipment and shooter skills. Below is an ITRC highlight video showing event stages.

So I’m in a production meeting, something outside of uni. I’m brought in as a DoP, and for small-scale filming using RMIT gear, I do like to think that I know what I’m talking about most of the time. But every so often, I get a shock, a wake up call, a feeling that I’m out of my depth. And that’s good, because it generally spurs me on to further educate myself for next time. In this particular production meeting, I discovered that I’m not an amazing electrician. Hardly a surprise. But I’m used to indoor, daytime shoots where you’re setting up redheads and dedos.. the occasional kino. But that’s it. You don’t need to worry much about electrical circuit capacities when your largest light consumes just 800W. Now.. this particular production meeting involved something quite different. We were talking about lighting a large exterior scene at night. There’s nothing much for the light to reflect off, no white walls or low ceilings.. just the open Craigieburn sky. Hence a set of redhead’s not really going to cut it. We need to flood a scene.. we need 2ks. The blondie, effectively a giant redhead, has no lens to control the light. It’s a PAR lamp.. I’m reasonably sure that PAR stands for “parabolic aluminised reflector” (referring to the curved, metal, shiny surface behind the tungsten filament). While I’m sure a blondie’s got enough light output for our purpose, I think a 2k fresnel may be the better option. Being able to focus the light, from flood to spot, would be a great advantage since we may need to run the light a considerable distance away, and focus light across to the other side of the yard. Great. Still no problems.. a 2k requires 2000watts which is achievable on a household circuit. But.. will just one 2k be enough? This yard is big, and there are long, continuous shots involving large portions of the space at once. Here’s where it gets complicated. How do I know the electrical circuitry of this particular house in craigieburn? How many circuits do we have to work with, and which powerpoints draw from which circuits?

Alright. So according to RMIT Media, we’ve got 2400W to work with per circuit. 2400 watts divided by 240 volts equals 10 amps.. which means that RMIT assumes we’re working with 10-amp circuits. Or.. that our powerboards will cut out at 2400W, regardless of the household circuit. It’s probably a safety-conscious assumption to make, in any case. According to “Producing Videos — A Complete Guide” (a massive tome by Martha Mollison purchased from RMIT bookshop), normal household circuits have a 15 or 16amp capacity. 15 amps x 240 volts = 3600 watts to work with. hmm. This means that if you turned off everything else running on that circuit, you could run a 2k and 1k fresnel on the same circuit simultaneously (though probably on different power boards, since most seem to cut out at 2400W). Ok.. that’s an interesting idea. But still I do not know how to find the number of household circuits to work with.) Again, according to Mollison’s monstrous book, to do this you head out to the power box and switch off the mains power. Then you’ve got to systematically switch on one circuit at a time, and test which power points are connected to each (and label them ‘A’ and ‘B’ or whatever). hmm. sounds like an extremely irritating process.

Further into this meeting, Jasper (the director) tells me that we probably don’t have access to 3-phase power. Shit.. 3-phase.. that sounds familiar and I’m sure I’ve read about it but any relevant knowledge eludes me, I look clueless. I don’t know my electrics. I’ve seen a 3-phase socket before, something like

that.
But yes, the reference to 3-phase threw me a bit. So for next time, 3-phase power is used to send an electrical current over a long distance. The power lines running down your street are going to be 3-phase. It’s inevitably AC (alternating current), because the fluctuating voltage is essential to sending power over distance. You’ve basically got 3 separate AC currents in the one cable, each functioning as a wave, going down below zero, coming up above zero. The three waves are out of sync.. staggered by 1/3 and 2/3 of a wave, respectively, which means that at all times, the total sum of the three waves is zero. The phases cancel each other out, neutralise each other, and this allows more efficient transmission of current at high voltages.
Since a house is going to be powered by single phase current, I’m guessing that 3-phase current allows you to draw more power, bypassing the 10, 15 or 16amp limit on household circuits. Not sure how easy it is to access 3-phase, perhaps that’s a way of powering a 4k without resorting to getting a generator. Not really sure. It doesn’t sound like something you want to mess with. But at least I have a vague idea, for now.

**edit:
I can’t stand blog-mistakes, so I have to correct my former self. I’ve been talking to Chris, a Gaffer working on this ABC comedy series, and apparently, 3-phase does not allow for electric current to travel long distances.. for that, you need “power lock”.. whatever that is. The fact is, whether it’s 3-phase or single phase, your voltage drops 6V for every 100m of cable. Pretty sure I’ve remembered that right. But yea. That means that if you’re drawing power from a noisy generator and need it to be a long distance away, your power drops and your lights may become slightly warmer in colour. (if they’re tungsten, at least).

Also, I should be going for the blondie for this Cragieburn shoot, as it’s a PAR lamp. PARs generally throw out about 3 times the light of a fresnel of the same wattage.. damn. So to match the output of a blondie, you’d need about a 6k fresnel.. that’s massive.

Enough for now.

Cissoid Unveils Vesuvio Buck Converters

Cissoid has launched its Vesuvio technology, which implements buck (step-down) DC-DC converters operating with high efficiency from -55C to +225C. Based on Cissoid’s two-chip set Magma-Hyperion and power transistors, the Vesuvio technology includes a reference design and a demonstration board. Vesuvio can step input voltages from 6V to 30V down to an output voltage adjustable from 1.2V up to 90 per cent of the input.

Vesuvio buck converters demonstrate efficiencies in excess of 90 per cent above 200C. When configured as synchronous DC-DC converter, it operates in continuous current mode (CCM) at a constant frequency, making ripple filtering easier for demanding sensor applications. Vesuvio technology uses the soft-start capability of Magma PWM controller to enable a smooth start-up.

The input voltage feed forward compensation makes it very robust to input voltage transient variations and provides a DC line regulation better than +/-1.5mV/V. The demonstration board is adjusted to a 5V output and is able to deliver up to 10W at 225C. The board is rated to 175C but can be tested higher for short periods of time. It is ideally shaped for test purposes with thermo-streamers.

Besides this example, Vesuvio technology can be used to build DC-DC buck converters with output voltages up to 27V delivering up to 50W. The reference design and its bill of material can be mapped onto high-temperature substrates and assembled in high reliability modules. Vesuvio technology is available for licensing and includes the reference design and its schematic, a demonstration board, data sheet and application note, as well as the bill of material.
